Boehm was born in Chowchilla but was raised in Brazil when his parents were called to be missionaries. They helped build a Seventh-day Adventist University in Sao Paulo, which he attended before coming back to California to attend Pacific Union College (PUC). He graduated in 1948 and married Howardine. He returned to the missionary field on the Amazon River returning to the United States in 1952. He then returned to PUC to become a teacher, according to the Redlands Daily Facts.

It also states that Boehm had taught at the Calexico Mission School for 10 years before he was given a teaching position as a Spanish teacher at LLA in 1963. While working at LLA he worked with seven principals and

saw his two daughter, Harlene (‘70) and Haidee (‘72), graduate from the school.

Two of his five grandchildren also graduated from LLA, Melissa (‘92) and Vanessa (‘94). He also had the privilege of getting to know his first great grandchild, Tiernin, who whose first birthday is in June. Boehm taught history, government, and Spanish. He sponsored the Student Association, the National Honors Society, the Mirror, and Reflections (the alumni magazine).

Boehm’s served at LLA until his retirement in 1988 but continued to keep regular part-time hours on the LLA campus until June 2004. With his additional services and his years at LLA, Boehm has served the Seventh-day Adventist institutions for 58 years.

In the school year of 2000-2001 LLA Home & School established the Harley Boehm Award in recognition for students who embody the Expected School-wide Learning results: Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical and Social Growth.

During the school year of 2003-2004 Boehm was given emeritus status at LLA, which meant that he was an honorary faculty member even though he had retired.

Boehm’s family has established an LLA scholarship to honor his name.

cool March day as the Roadrunners take the field. It sounds like the perfect setting for a baseball game except one thing is missing—the fans.

As the game gets closer to starting, the bleachers start filling slowly, except not with fans from Loma Linda Academy (LLA), but with supporters cheering for the opposing team.

Baseball may not be considered the most entertaining sport by some, but this trend of “empty bleacher syndrome” does not end with baseball.

According to Gary Eggers, who is the athletic director at LLA, baseball and

Cameron Buckley (10) feels that basketball is also under the influence of the syndrome. Buckley jokes that the reason is because “they [LLA students] don’t respect the beautiful art of basketball.”

It is not that students do not “respect the art,” it is that they are uninformed argues Elson Lucrida (11). “Nobody says when the games are.”

Some people may feel that fans are not that important to the final outcome of a game, but Justin Powell (10) of the soccer team feels differently. He says

Students at LLA do not appear to have any time, or interest, to come out and support the teams. Mark Bradford, coach of the boys’ Varsity Basketball team, says “there’s a general lack of school spirit.”

Though it may be more of a time issue than a spirit issue. Students have so many things to do; going to sporting events is sometimes the last thing on their mind. Zack Jaggers (12) commented that “I’m too busy. I have so many extra curricular things that I’m doing.”

There may be a lack of school spirit at some of the games, but not when

Michaelson, who has been known to paint his face and his chest in the school colors, is definitely not the ordinary fan.

When asked about the colorful display Michaelson stated “It shows a form of spiritual support.”

The cool March day comes to an end as the sun sinks behind the hills. The last of the players are heading towards the parking lot and the Roadrunner’s bleachers stand as tall and alone after the game as they did during the game.

Chronic Tardiness

E

veryday, after the first bell has rung, students come to class late. This does not just happen with the first period. It happens for every class period throughout the day. Many students have detentions piling up due to their incisive tardiness.

Many popular reasons people are late is because: traffic, short time between classes, and locker trouble.

With the help of a survey of the student body at Loma Linda Academy (LLA), these questions have been answered.

In the survey given to all LLA students, over half of the students responded that they are late to class often. For many people, these attendance problems start before they are even at school. Some people cannot wake up on time like Stephanie Lao (10).

Others cannot get ready on time, like Jordan Oxley (12), who likes taking “30 minute showers.”

Also, a lot of people count on others to get them to school on time like Jessica Tangunan (12), who is often late to school in the morning because of her ride.

Even when people get out of the house on time, they are not guaranteed to get to school on time.

Many people get caught in the traffic around school, which can be bad in the mornings.

One of the people who gets caught up in traffic is Steve Brooks (12), who is hit by traffic all the way from Reche Canyon.

Other students are at school when the bell rings and are still late to class.

he health of the typical American is declining. A study conducted by the Atlanta Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that, “In 1993, 12 states had obesity prevalence rates between 15 and 19 percent, and no other states had rates at or above 20 percent. By 2003, 15 states had obesity prevalence rates between 15 percent and 19 percent, 31 states had rates between 20 percent and 24 percent, and four states had rates at or above 25 percent.” There are many factors that contribute to a healthy lifestyle or the lack thereof.

A recent survey conducted, by the Mirror staff, of 63 randomly selected students of Loma Linda Academy (LLA) high school concluded that the average student participates in the recommended amount of physical activity 3.66 times per week. Marginally less than the recommended amount of five times per week.

Students get some physical exercise from their physical education requirements. According to Patty Day, LLA high

school Registrar, LLA requires two semesters of physical education classes for freshman students, two physical education credits for sophomore students, and one physical education credit for juniors and seniors. For grades ten, eleven, and twelve physical education credits can be met through a semester class of physical education or a varsity sport. Above and beyond the requirements additional physical education classes are offered for any student that wished to add them to their schedule.

According to a National Health Interview Survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics from 19992001, “at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the

week is the recommended minimum.

However, nearly 23 percent of children and nearly 40 percent of adults get no free-time physical activity at all.

Moderate activity is defined as activities such as walking or bicycling for at least 30 minutes on 5 or more days per week.”

The student survey also conveyed that the average LLA high school student gets 7.29 hours of sleep on any given night during the week, significantly less than the 8.5 - 9.5 hours of sleep per night recommended by the National Sleep Foundation.

According to the statistical source book A Nation at Risk, “Children and

History Club

taken from distingushedspeakers.com oma Linda Academy (LLA) Political Science and History Club now offers a unique opportunity to broaden LLA student’s knowledge of history by being a member of the club. It is open to any student who would like to be involved in the activities offered by the club, with the exception of the lecture series which is considered a senior privilege.

The history club is run by copresidents Jenny Tracey (12) and Laura Brauer (12). Tracey and Brauer were chosen by Steve Laing, LLA’s history and government teacher, as presidents because they wanted to start a club on campus involving political science and history. After discussing the idea with Laing it was decided that he would become the sponsor for the club. Currently, there are around 60

people who are involved with the different activities of the club, but anyone is welcome to be a part of the different events the club has planned.

Every month a group of seniors have been given a chance to attend a monthly lecture called the Distinguished Speaker Series of Southern California which has a free ticket program for high school students.

This is the tenth season in which many worldrenowned individuals such as Nobel-Peace and Pulitzer-Prize winners and world leaders speak for this event. A few of the more well-known names include: Colin Powell, former Secretary of State; Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of the Soviet Union from 1985-1991; Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent; Tom Wolfe, national best selling author.

Wedgewood: The Trio When the “pitter patter” of raindrops streaks across the windows, a reader often chooses a steaming cup of chocolate and an entertaining book to curl up and read. Yet many student readers at Loma Linda Academy (LLA) probably do not realize that some of the authors

they could choose are related to their fellow students. These authors are cousins, aunts, uncles, and parents of current LLA students.

Through a simple survey sent out to LLA students, a plentiful amount [of students] shared the hidden talents their

relatives had contributed to the publishing world. Exciting autobiographies to touching religious experiences—the genres vary dramatically.

Christina Jobe’s (11) 2nd cousin, Casey Kuhlman co-wrote a true, heartracing autobiography titled Shooter.

This first-hand view of combat written

by Jack Coughlin and Kuhlman starts as 19-year-old Coughlin works his way into becoming one of the Marine Corps top snipers and performs courageously on the battlefield. Coughlin collaborated with retired Captain Kuhlman in co-writing this autobiography. Kuhlman wanted to “tell [his] story from the lowly end… from those of us who were on the ground.”

In an interview with Bill Thompson from EyeonBooks, Kuhlman spoke about the emotional aspect of being out in the battlefield and the difficulty the process of healing [from the emotional stress of having to shoot enemy personnel] could be. “When we compared notes [on the book], we talked about how lethargic it was, but bringing it [their experiences] out in the open allowed us to heal together [Coughlin and Kuhlman].”

MOCK TRIALS The annual government-class mock trials, which are trials where students get to practice the legal system first hand, are progressing towards the final verdict. Students are uncharacteristically out of uniform dressed in “professional attire.” The next issue of the Mirror will present the verdict and details of mock trials.

FILM FESTIVAL Any student currently enrolled at Loma Linda Academy is eligible to submit a film for the LLA Film Festival in the following categories: documentary, narrative/film trailer, or experimental. All entries must be submitted on a unauthored DVD and are due May 25, 2006 by 5:00pm. The LLA Film Festival will be held the last week of school in the Franz Hall Chapel. Along with dealing with teenagers comes the nicknames, which consists of: Binks, the Binkenator, the potted plant, Phil! (Class of ‘04), and more.

For years, Binkley has been telling the band that he would retire at the end of 2006.

Now the time has come, and the band has come to realize that a new teacher will have a lot of responsibility on “Mr. Binkley is my life. The band has also been known to do funny things. One example was when the band played a completely different song than Binkley was expecting. They then stopped, and had one band member come out of his seat to give Binkley a gift for working so hard to keep symphonic band a successful band.

oma Linda Academy (LLA) has been blessed for the last 30 years with a gentleman named Phillip Binkley. Many students, staff members, and LLA alumni have most likely encountered Binkley from either participating in band, going to their concerts, or having a sibling in band.

The LLA symphonic band has not always been a hard working group.

“When I arrived in 1976, the band program had languished. There was

no continuity in the program, and there were only nine students signed up for band at the time,” explained Binkley. “I took a look at the band and said to myself ‘O.K. roll up your sleeves

and let’s go.’”

Ever since that time, Binkley has sharpened the band to be where they are now. They have gone on a tour every year including six international tours to 16 different countries including England, France, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.

This summer the band will go to Germany, Austria, and other european countries.

errick Jed Lamberte (12) returned to school several weeks ago after a long, painful fight with leukemia and pancreatitis. His return had been anticipated for almost a year beforehand when the attack on his life had first begun.

Lamberte (12) entered the Kaiser Fontana hospital March 28, 2005. He went to have a checkup at the hospital and was immediately admitted after finding that he had acquired a case of leukemia.

He recalls being both “surprised and shocked.” “I never thought it would happen to me,” he said, surprise still showing on his face. He felt angry and sad because of all the school he would be missing and the friends he would soon miss. Fortunately he received a lot of support throughout the entire

ordeal. His friends visited him many times over the course of his painful experience. After Lamberte (12) was admitted to Kaiser Fontana in late March, he remained under the staff’s careful supervision until April 11, 2005. He then went home where he stayed during the time he received chemotherapy treatments at the hospital.

Ignorance about this very serious ailment is easily pushed away by his description of the chemotherapy: “It hurt, it felt like I was burning inside.”

Even though he would later find out it was only temporary, he remembers how nice it felt to be in his own home.

His simple yet effective comment: “I was very happy to be home.”

It turned out that while receiving the chemotherapy, Lamberte (12) had developed a case of pancreatitis; which
