Visions for the Textile Industry

ISPO is your gateway for future trends. In cooperation with trend expert Louisa Smith ISPO has studied various global trends with influence on the textile industry and its products. In combination with the defined trend colors and five more detailed textile trends, these megatrends provide a good vision where the future of textiles will take us.

ISPO is very pleased to have the opportunity to share these visions for Fall/Winter 2027/28 with the textile industry and to use these trends as a basic guideline for ISPO Textrends Award Winter 2026.

The megatrends show visions that are not specific to one particular area, but will influence the entire textile chain right down to the consumer. The color cards and the textile trends result from a range of influences, from consumer behavior to the global economy. Film, music, social media, art and many other activities are reflected in these trends.

They form a basic guideline how new developments and innovations of ingredient products will be shown, presented and highlighted at ISPO Textrends Award Winter 2026.

Vision for Fall/Winter 2027/28

Embracing challenging times creates interesting energy and eclectic developments; it's time to take the plunge and release our potential

Globalization has taken on a somewhat chaotic ride as margins remain tight, and brands fight for space. One advantage the sports and outdoor sector has compared to other textile sectors is that we offer more in terms of performance, functionality, and sustainable developments.

This is not the time to halt these efforts. Instead, we must embrace these challenges, pull back, and wait patiently until we can release and experience that exhilarating hit. The same applies to consumers.

We provide sports and outdoor apparel and gear that protect and empower them in achieving their goals, moving, enjoying the outdoors, and traveling. Our consumer base is exciting, as we know our developments help them reach their objectives daily. That said, there needs to be a shift in the market throughout the supply chain. Brands must take responsibility for investing in the significant advancements available, focusing less on price and more on performance.

Consumers also need to acknowledge this in the retail price. We are not fast fashion; we are essential textiles and trims that deliver in many ways. As leaders in sustainability, we must continually invest in research and development and scale up lab-based innovations to a commercial level to avoid stagnation.

Let’s be clear: we excel at what we do, delivering the best options for the sports and outdoor sector. Now is not the time to stop. Let’s continue to lead by example, maintain our strong voice in the right direction, and engage consumers to understand the value of the products they are purchasing.

Rebooting the supply chain from fiber to consumer is no easy task, but it is achievable and necessary for the ongoing changes across the global industry. So, let’s release the recoil on the pinball machine and see where Fall/Winter 2027/28 lands. These are challenging yet exciting times—it’s time to play some mean pinball!

Mega Trend 1 Bipartite

A dualistic approach is evident in digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI), and intelligent augmentation. There is no escaping the rapid technological advancements in today’s world; they are here to stay. However, we must embrace these developments on our terms, and harness the potential they can deliver, especially in responsible manufacturing and design.

With AI expected to take over a significant portion of the workforce in the next ten years, it is crucial that we maintain control and guide its evolution to ensure it benefits us rather than hinders our progress. Renewable energy continues to grow alongside fossil fuel options, with more factories and countries increasing their renewable energy output.

Human-to-human (H2H) interaction remains essential for creativity and for understanding the advantages of the latest innovations in the textile industry. We possess a unique ability that AI has yet to replicate: the ability to touch and feel. This includes the physical sensations and the exhilarating emotions we experience when achieving our goals in sports and outdoor activities.

The discussion surrounding BIPARTITE also addresses the competition between synthetic and natural ingredients, with each often criticizing the other as the superior choice. We should move beyond this conflict; both synthetic materials—from virgin sources to newly developed bio-based qualities—and natural ingredients each have their place in the industry. Innovative new natural-based auxiliaries in the finishing process further enhance this balance.

Mega Trend 2 Vocal

Shout it, stream it, digitalize it—VOCAL is about keeping the information highway loud and clear. Clarity is crucial as we navigate extensive legalization and the challenge of managing growing digital data, enhancing the true transparency of products, not just from source but at the end of life.  Communicating the benefits of education, responsible lifestyles, and responsible design is vital. Business is increasingly becoming a data-driven, multi-layered maze; we need to keep it simple to achieve the best results. Staying updated is essential, especially with the EU Ecodesign directive coming into effect, which offers sourcing, recycling, and end-of-life consideration throughout the entire supply chain.

If you are not already demonstrating your commitment to these principles, your business may face serious challenges. Simplifying communication with consumers is key. They generally trust their brands and believe they are doing the right thing, but it’s essential to keep them satisfied and avoid overwhelming them with information. Repair and take-back initiatives must expand, offering easy options for consumer engagement.

Eyes on Generation Alpha, the generation to succeed GenZ, and the first generation to grow up entirely in the 21st Century. Digital natives and technologically savvy, Gen Alpha must understand the benefits of sustainability and responsible consumerism and how to implement them. With home economics excluded from today’s school curriculum, how are a generation expected to repair when they have very little dexterity and no knowledge to do so in a heightened throwaway society, where a screen is always in their hand?

Straightforward guidance on caring for and repairing clothing can encourage better buying habits, promoting less frequent and more responsible purchases while also considering end-of-life disposal. Plus, delivering the ingredients that create outdoors and sports apparel that will perform and leave minimum environmental impact.

Mega Trend 3 Mobilize

Health is paramount; it cannot be bought and is priceless, encompassing both mental and physical well-being. In today's screen-locked society, where activity levels are at their lowest recorded rates, taking action is essential. ISPO is partnering with the WFSGI to highlight the untapped market of 1.8 billion people worldwide who are physically inactive, aiming to motivate and mobilize this group. This staggering statistic points to a looming pandemic of obesity and poor health.

"The greatest wealth is health," said the ancient Roman poet Virgil, and his words still resonate powerfully over 2,000 years later. Brands are working to address the barriers to movement, with body confidence being a crucial issue, particularly for women. We need to create safe spaces where women can exercise comfortably, whether participating in virtual classes from home or joining running groups.

Engaging with consumers is vital. Inclusivity presents excellent growth opportunities, evident in the rise of meetup communities, running clubs, networking groups, and various outdoor activities that promote movement and socialization—elements we increasingly lack in a digitalized world. We must empower inactive individuals to become active through great products and a better understanding of the benefits involved. It’s time to dismantle these digital barriers and reconnect as a community.

Participating in sports and outdoor activities not only enhances physical fitness but also contributes to mental well-being. The fresh air, change of scenery, and physical exertion are all crucial for fostering a healthier mind. Ironically, while digital devices connect us to real-life events, they highlight the necessity of balancing both dimensions—once again, achieving equilibrium is the ultimate goal.

Colors Fall/Winter 2027/28

COLOR COLLAB

This season's color palettes are inspired by the ups and downs we have been experiencing, which seem to come at us more quickly than usual as the industry navigates a challenging landscape. The past few years have been difficult, and these challenges show no signs of slowing down, but we are well-prepared to face them head-on.

In response, our approach to color reflects how we cope with these highs and lows. New tones and nuances are designed to energize, enlighten, or calm us. Whether we choose to respond by taking action, fighting back, or staying still, there is never a dull moment.

At ISPO Textrends, we present our color directions influenced by global moods. Our goal is not to dictate a single color or criticize brands that make different choices. Instead, we aim to share and collaborate on a broader scale. That’s why we introduce a CORE palette featuring four satellite colors, allowing for a dynamic interplay.

Core

The focus for Fall/Winter 27/28 is on working the core, drawing inspiration from an innovative industrial approach. The collection features classic black and steel gray hues, enhanced with a fresh take on primary colors. Highlights of copper orange and grass green complement a staple palette of blue tones. There is a stoic message coming through from here. Gives us what you have got, let’s bring it on!

Charged

Let's bring on the chutzpah and get energized with some humor! Every day is a celebration, so let’s stay positive and fully charged. The tones we’re discussing can vary from soothing to vibrant, depending on the substrate or application. They range from matte to glossy surfaces, including foil prints, membrane coatings, and tri-lobal yarns with different levels of reflectivity.

Peripheral

This season introduces a new perspective through a divergent approach. A bright luminosity combines with sharper tones from the CORE palette, creating an intense and inclusive aesthetic when paired with black and white. Additionally, a natural look can be achieved by applying bio-dyes to both synthetic and natural fibers.

Prized

Resolute's message for the season is "Still Standing," with rich tones and a new level of density that create a grounded atmosphere. Shades of blue complement updated versions of khaki, olive, and stone, reimagining them for outdoor use while ensuring durability and longevity in timeless products. Smooth, compact substrates effectively absorb the intensity and depth of these colors.

Resolute

As gaming continues to grow and e-sports emerge as a popular spectator sports, we draw inspiration from the pioneering gamers of the past who energized this sector. This retro influence brings a sense of strength and tenacity, highlighted by primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, which receive a grunge makeover.

Textile Trend 1 Technocratic

The Mood Traditional processes, improved—that best describes Technocratic methods as we strive to enhance our industry’s performance. Today, sustainable solutions must align with the performance standards we aim to achieve. How can we surpass our past efforts? How can we minimize our environmental impact, meet new consumer performance goals, and still remain profitable?

Our approach to progress involves a combination of natural intelligence and artificial intelligence, often referred to as biohacking. Transparency in terms of dates, orders, and accreditations is essential for confirming honest transactions in safe working environments with fair pay.

As we develop these solutions, corporate social responsibility must be a priority; it is vital that the entire supply chain benefits from this innovative thinking. What can we expect moving forward? First, a cleaner and more efficient supply chain that is fully trackable and traceable—from the ingredients used throughout the process to the consumer's role in disposing of or returning products to a circular economy. Green chemistry will take center stage, promoting cleaner methods at a new level.

The use of bio-based ingredients in synthetics continues to grow, collaborating with conventional materials to create the best of both worlds. Additionally, advancements in lightweight materials are making outer layers more technically sophisticated while feeling almost weightless. This trend embraces the future of the sports and outdoors sector by merging the performance qualities of the past with cutting-edge technology.

Textile Trend 2 Correlation

The Mood Insulation, whether derived from down or synthetic materials, along with thermal regulation, are crucial for winter performance. Innovations in this area are not limited to advancements in down and insulation; they are also expanding into yarn engineering. The base and second layers of clothing are evolving to enhance warming capabilities. While down continues to be a strong contender for insulation, it is essential that it is traceable to ensure animal welfare.

Additionally, the biodegradability and compostability of down should be recognized as advantages of this traditional insulation material. Recent developments include hybrid blends, waterproof blends, recycled down, and antibacterial down. Some hybrid blends combine synthetic insulation or alternative natural materials with a solid cellulosic structure.

Wool also plays a vital role in this trend. As the original performance fiber used in sportswear, it is being innovated across base, second, and outer layers in both knitted and woven formats. Both conventional and merino wool are essential for thermal regulation, and innovative spinning techniques are enhancing their functionality. The interaction between the body and the corresponding layer is critical for warmth, and in today's ever-changing climate, this interaction adapts to varying temperatures.

Textile Trend 3

Prescriptive

The Mood It’s time to prioritize well-being for the industry, consumers, and Mother Earth. We are embracing a combination of well-being and anti-toxicity in the textiles industry, as consumers seek healthier lifestyles in a better environment. This approach benefits everyone!

We started by addressing the challenges posed by persistent chemicals, specifically PFCs and PFAS, which present health risks and environmental hazards. While these substances were once important for enhancing performance and providing protection, we are now witnessing a transformative shift toward cleaner, safer alternatives. These alternatives use bio-based materials and employ clean, green chemistry, featuring innovative finishes and additives that neutralize the harmful ingredients of the past.

Next-generation performance ingredients are inspired by nature, providing renewable substances that enhance functionality while protecting our environment. This commitment goes beyond simply improving chemical processes in dyeing, fixing, and finishing; it embraces a holistic approach to well-being, where consumers directly benefit from their apparel and gear.

Textile Trend 4 Constant

The Mood Regarding outdoor textiles and trim, our innovation and engineering are unmatched. We produce solid materials that are designed to protect, perform, and, most importantly, last. As the circular economy becomes an essential part of our industry, we must explore ways to maintain this high level of innovation while continually striving for circularity in developing the next generation of feedstock.

Mono fabrics lead the market, primarily through innovative engineered stretch. Responsible design is also crucial; we must consider how to create a product that is 100 percent circular, especially when accounting for the trims and accessories necessary for high-level winter performance. Stripping and sorting a garment is no easy task, and responsible design must be a priority as we work to reduce waste and opt for more sustainable choices throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Recycled materials continue to play a significant role here, from recycled membranes to recycled yarns, both natural and synthetic. However, advancements in textile-to-textile yarn development will generate new interest among industry professionals and consumers alike, creating compelling narratives at retail that resonate with shoppers, much like the awareness built around recycled plastic bottles.

The durability and performance required in our industry must be met through responsible practices. To achieve true circularity, more research and development are necessary to ensure transparency regarding the origin of textile-to-textile (T2T) feedstock. Be warned, there will be no greenwashing here!!.

Textile Trend 5 Modular

The Mood

This trend embraces the changes in manufacturing both materials and apparel and soft equipment as we look to modular designs that mold and move with the wearer. A reduction of traditional seams and finishing is key for a smooth, locked in dry function through innovative tape seaming and clean cut fabrics that does’t require a finish. Welded fabrics, are soft, enhancing the performance of the wearer, as they are also packed full of innovative ingredients to achieve that end goal.

3D Digital printing extends from trims and accessories, to shoe soles and protective trims - including helmets and elbow, shin and knee pads. The traditional molded technology continues but incorporates clean foam ingredients. Flat knitting for uppers in the footwear field corresponds with the seamless and lightweight forms of the sole.

For apparel engineered zones in warp knits deliver specific compression or performance with ing a garment eliminating the need for seaming different fabrics. This is a particularly interesting area for sports bras too - highly engineered with futuristic comfort.

As for digitalization and the connection of performance to apps, wearable technology applied to the clothes is key, from printed sensors that can’t even feel to app-controlled heated apparel. This trend is technically advanced, but appears minimally sophisticated in design. It combines the coexistence of AI and human design.
