One of my favorite questions I was introduced to when I started this major was, “What makes a space into a place?” Having never even heard of the field of Landscape Architecture, I was immediately fascinated by the ways it appeared all around me. I just had never noticed. I thought, how could I have never realized that all these spaces and places I’ve been were designed by another human? I began to make more mental notes of what sort of places I enjoyed the most, and soon enough I was seeing the world through the vibrant lens of Landscape Architecture.
I aim to achieve goals that are my own as well as my future clients. Designing takes a specific mindset, and I always try to put myself in multiple people’s shoes. What would the client think? The engineer for the site? Children? Adults and Elderly? Animals? Architects? It’s easy to go on and on. We design for many reasons, but I know that one of my biggest motivators is to design for the people. I want them to notice how beautiful a tree is. I want them to remember how peaceful they felt sitting on a bench by a water feature. I want them to retain the feeling that being in that space gave them, without even realizing it.
I think one of my favorite things about this profession is how diverse it is. There is truly a little bit of everything I’ve always been interested in - architecture, psychology, sociology, nature, engineering, and design. The creative freedom that comes with this practice is motivating and inspiring. The thought of people one day enjoying a place that you designed is a feeling that doesn’t get old. I dream of creating places and spaces where families make some of their greatest memories in their first home. Places a young person experiences when they move to a new city or town. Places that people can enjoy and relax in on vacation. Places that stay in one’s mind for a lifetime.

LEBER RESIDENCE

2024 | Georgia

PROCESS SKETCHING
Located in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta Georgia, the Leber Residence posed a variety of opportunities and challenges. The primary goal was to reconfigure the extensive driveway to create a manageable slope and functional grading across the property, adding a carriage house in the backyard, and redesigning the front entry sequence. The process began with solving the grading issues, resulting in a successful driveway plan with a 13% slope. Two retaining walls were also added to further support the grading and drainage through the site. When creating the entry walk, I used right angles to create transitions and different viewpoints leading up to the front door. The driveway also provided for a new parking turnaround area, as well as additional spaces for guests. For the backyard itself, I opted for a formal design approach, with the pool and formal lawn following the axis of the carriage house. I aimed for mostly symetrical planting around the lawn as well as behind the pool.

FRONT OF HOUSE PERSPECTIVE SKETCH
The newly designed Herschend Residence mixes timeless characteristics and modern luxuries. Beginning as an empty property, I was tasked with choosing the architecture of the home and designing the landscape around it. I opted for a spacious one story home that had plenty of windows for views of the new design. At nearly 3,000 square feet, the new cottage home presents a beautiful facade that has been enhanced by detailed landscaping as well as a walkway from the private motor court to the front door. A 40x60 lap style pool with a spa creates a formal axis that is intersected by lush allays of crape myrtles off both sides. Residents can host a dinner party on the elevated back patio, or during cooler months, a fire can be enjoyed off to the right and down the stairs of the patio. The garden on the left side of the patio provides lush views of hydrangeas, phlox, and boxwoods out the master bedroom window, with a birdbath adding the perfect aesthetic touch. Continuing through the backyard, there is ample lawn space for play or lounge, as well as a table and chairs under the four trident maples for anyone to enjoy a game of cards or a meal in a more secluded area.

PROPOSED GRADING
The design of the Curtis Road home provides for an a leisurely and aesthetic family experience. Neat green boxwoods line your entry as you drive up to the property and the house comes into view. Enjoy ample parking space and room for guests in the round about. Following the path into the backyard, an expansive patio provides plenty of room for socialization and relaxation, whether you read a book by the pool in a lounge chair, or grill out for the family. The large lawn area leaves plenty of room for play for the younger ones. Continue to the west of the property to observe the flower and vegetable garden that provides year round engagement and opportunity. The gazebo in the gardens adds an architectural element to the space as well as a place of reflection.

PIAZZA DEL PORTA COLONIA
Cortona, Italy | Summer 2023
Photoshop Digital Renderings
Located at the North side of the magical city of Cortona, Italy is the Piazza di Porta Colonia. While the newley designed space not only preserves existing parking and terrain for visitors and residents, it adds new artistic experiences for all who enter. The main reconfiguration of the space includes two new piazza spaces who’s goal is to incorporate local Cortonese art into a public area. In the main Piazza there are various glass display structures and three large boards for either art or informative postings and notices. A new water feature also adds a peaceful aesthetic to not only enjoy visually, but also functions as a seating area for those wishing to relax. In the second piazza, visitors may choose to sit and enjoy the view on one of the benches, which also displays different tyes of 2D art. They also may create works of their own on the ledge off the existing wall, where easels may be set up for personal use.
SITE ENTRANCE
The site’s beautiful views of the valley make for the perfect painting or setting for lunch from a local spot with friends. In additions to the artistic elements, a newly constructed office and studio space with public bathroooms is located on the West end of the site near the moped and bike racks. The Piazza brings a new meaning to public spaces by creating a way to celebrate and support local artists in the place they call home. The goal is to not only encourage users to seek out the artists within the town and learn more about their work, but to also spark their creativity and imagination before experiencing the city itself.
