MOORE SQUARE SPORTS HALL

'POINT OF CONTACT' PAVILION

In downtown Raleigh, a park renovation of Moore Square was completed in the summer of 2019. Adjacent to the park’s southeastern corner, a vacant lot exists. In order to continue to bring activity and liveliness to the immediate area, a new indoor soccer facility will operate.

Point of Contact is a conceptual pavilion designed to reside temporarily in Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, NC. The pavilion’s purpose is two part: to capture the technical wonder of a Raleigh artist’s experimentation with ambisonic sound and to create an architecturally interesting space that challenges ideas of inside and outside and individual part to the whole.

William B. Umstead State Park is a short 15 minute drive northwest of downtown Raleigh. The park access right off of I-40 is the location of this project, a nature hotel. Several chain hotels populate the area because of its proximity to the Raleigh Durham Airport. This hotel seeks to break from the norm by utilizing natural elements to make a user’s stay memorable and meditative.

For Point of Contact, a metal clip and fastener system has been developed to simultaneously hold the shape of each individual joining of surface material and provide the bridge connection to the next unit.

The hotel works to preserve and enhance the essence of the park through specific programmatic decisions and through an adjoined boutique spa.

Raleigh has plans for a professional soccer stadium and North Carolina has the largest youth soccer association in the country. Not only would this facility strengthen the viability of Moore Square as an important public space, the game of soccer is hyper inclusive.

CENTER FOR MATERIAL SCIENCES

A highly technical Center for Applied Material Sciences will play a critical role in supporting Duke University’s emphasis on interdisciplinary research and development. It will feature a dedicated maker space, to test material applications, graduate research labs and multiple flexible collaboration spaces. The site for the project, located at the end of Science Drive between The University Physics Department, The Pratt School of Engineering, and the Levine Science Research Center, has the potential to house a critical cell for the campus.

MOORE SQUARE SPORTS HALL In downtown Raleigh, a park renovation of Moore Square was completed in the summer of 2019. What was once a dilapidated and relatively unused public space in the middle of the city is now a vibrant and particularly active space. On weekends, numerous Raleigh organizations hold events and festivals on the park’s grounds. Yoga and CrossFit groups gather on the newly manicured green space in the square’s center to relax and improve fitness. Adjacent to the park’s southeastern corner, a vacant lot exists. In order to continue to bring activity and liveliness to the immediate area, the following project presents an indoor soccer facility that responds to the site’s urban conditions. Soccer isn’t new to the Triangle area. Some master plans of a portion of the downtown area feature a soccer stadium and North Carolina has the largest youth soccer association in the country. Not only would this facility strengthen the viability of Moore Square as an important public space, the game of soccer is hyper inclusive. No matter your age, race, gender, or financial situation, all that is required is the desire to have fun.

'POINT OF CONTACT' PAVILION Point of Contact is a conceptual pavilion designed to reside temporarily in Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, NC. By utilizing a module-based approach in the construction of the pavilion, the pieces could be reassembled rather quickly elsewhere after its indefinite stay in the park. The pavilion’s purpose is two part: to capture the technical wonder of a Raleigh artist’s experimentation with ambisonic sound and to create an architecturally interesting space that challenges ideas of inside and outside and individual part to the whole. The fullscale physical mock-up, presented here, shows the construction technique and a portion of the subtracted volume from the pavilion’s interior. For Point of Contact, a metal clip and fastener system has been developed to simultaneously hold the shape of each individual joining of surface material and provide the bridge connection to the next box. By using Rhino as a design tool, the team was able to iterate on a number of different overall pavilion forms. Section perspective drawings and series of conceptual renders help to tell the story of the team’s most developed form.

STEREO

AMBISONIC

Ambisonic sound differs greatly from stereo sound. The diagram above demonstrates the ability of ambisonic sound to completely surround a specified, central location for an enhanced listening experience. By combining the principles of this ambisonic sound diagram with the need for an interesting architectural pavilion, ‘Point of Contact’ was conceived. The interior space of the assembled pavilion is mostly spherical, allowing for the installation of programmed speakers that work to provide a listener with an ambisonic sound experience. There is an entry and exit on opposite sides of the pavilion. The walls of these more transparent faces push into the overall form so that the entries and exits are both expressed and covered for the user.

UMSTEAD PARK NATURE HOTEL William B. Umstead State Park is a short 15 minute drive northwest of downtown Raleigh. Roughly 8.7 miles of preserved forests and water features are available as a natural getaway for residents or visitors to the Triangle. The park access right off of I-40 is the location of this project, a nature hotel. Several chain hotels populate the area because of its proximity to the Raleigh Durham Airport. This hotel seeks to break from the norm by utilizing natural elements to make a user’s stay memorable and meditative. The project is directly adjacent to the existing parking lot at the access. The hotel works to preserve and enhance the essence of the park through specific programmatic decisions and through an adjoined boutique spa. The hotel’s form is lifted above the park grounds and provides spectacular views of the area to the north. The sunken spa spaces to the south provide a relaxing experience to someone wanting a serene getaway. The lobby and cafe hover at tree canopy level, keeping visitors ever close to the natural wonder of Umstead State Park.

CENTER FOR APPLIED MATERIAL SCIENCES A dedicated and highly technical Center for Applied Material Sciences will play a critical role in supporting Duke University’s emphasis on interdisciplinary research and development. The site for the project, located at the end of Science Drive between The University Physics Department, The Pratt School of Engineering, and the Levine Science Research Center (the largest single-site interdisciplinary research facility in the U.S.), has the potential to house a critical cell for the campus. It is also in close proximity to the historic Duke Chapel. A private stair ascending to the uppermost level of the building glimpses the spire. The project strikes a balance between modern building tectonics, featuring a mounted ceramic-tube screen that shades the most sunlit facades of the building, and a hypersensitive sight condition, an important pedestrian path that simultaneously improves overall campus circulation and creates a place of gathering or presentation. A successful project on this site would not only be appropriate, it would be a physical catalyst for innovation and inspiration.

" Say, for example, the material Kevlar is developed in the lab setting. The CAMS Application Lab at the basement level would be a place where students or externally-funded entities could go to sew a bulletproof vest or boat sail, two common applications of the material. The prototype product could then be tested and analyzed for its material properties and effectiveness. Graduate research and lectures related to material studies would take place on the top floor of the building. A shared, 20'
