“ without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible.” – F R A N K Z A P PA
THE H IS TO RY The Logan Inn, circa 1722, is the oldest building in New Hope. Originally known as The Ferry Tavern, it was built by New Hope founder, John Wells, for whom the town was originally named Wells Ferry. In 1722, Wells was formally licensed to erect and keep a ferry by act of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania, and further licensed to keep a tavern in 1727, at which point it was also established as an inn and is the oldest continuously run inn in Bucks County (and one of the five oldest in the United States!) Today, it remains New Hope’s only in-town hostelry listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The result was the Ferry Tavern, which today is the Logan Inn. The name Logan came to the Inn about 100 years after it was first licensed and after the ferry had ceased operation. It’s been said, on February 22,1828, as part of a celebration, (probably of Washington’s birthday), the Ferry Tavern was renamed the Logan Inn and a metal cut-out of an Indian was installed towering above the roof of the Inn. Many believe that the Indian represented the legend of a former Lenni-Lenape chief, noted for his kindness and hospitality with the white settlers, who developed a close friendship with James Logan, secretary to William Penn, and as a sign of admiration took Logan’s name. Admired for its aesthetic design and sought after by collectors, the Indian stands as a guardian of the town. During a renovation in 1987, this historic landmark was brought back to its original colonial charm. Stepping into the Tavern, located in the oldest part of the building, was like stepping back in time. The antique woodwork, the colonial fireplace, and warm, friendly atmosphere are as inviting today as they were more than 260 years ago. The murals in the bar, uncovered during renovations and painstakingly restored by local artist Illia Barger, are an indication of the great care taken to preserve the history of this fine inn.
The inn again changed ownership in October of 2000, and underwent a renovation that elegantly blended the inn’s colonial charm with modern-day luxuries. During this excavation, the famous wedding-day portrait of the Lutz’s was restored, two cisterns were discovered, and the ‘Original Icehouse of New Hope’ evolved. When the cisterns were found during the renovation, the new owners adamantly insisted on their preservation and integration in the new design. These cisterns originally collected rainwater for the town. One may now be seen by new generations for years to come. Another historic preservation is that of the icehouse located at the rear of the inn. This charming stone house was used to store blocks of ice which the townspeople would purchase as they needed. The icehouse will remain preserved and will always be a very special part of the inn and town. Frank and Jeanne Cretella of Landmark Hospitality have spent summers staying in New Hope with their family and had always dreamed of owning property as special as this. In 2015, their dream came true as they purchased this beautiful, historic site in order to make it a premiere destination for locals and out-of-town guests alike. Frank & Jeanne hope you enjoy your stay as much as they did!

Henry Mercer personally designed plans for a museum to house his collection, six stories tall and cast of poured-in-place concrete. Mercer’s museum was completed in 1916, in addition to tools, it displays furnishings of early America, carriages, stove plates, a gallows, antique fire engines, a whaleboat, and the Lenape Stone. The Spruance Library, which houses the Bucks County Historical Society’s archive of historical research materials, is located on its third floor.
FO NTH ILL CA ST L E
doylestown East Court St & Route 313 | Doylestown, PA www.mercermuseum.org/visit/fonthill-castle
Built between 1908-1912, Fonthill was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930. Archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramist, scholar and antiquarian, Mercer built Fonthill both as his home and as a showplace for his collection of tiles and prints. The first of three Mercer buildings in Doylestown, Fonthill served as a showplace for Mercer’s famed Moravian tiles that were produced during the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Designed by Mercer, the building is an eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles, and is significant as an early example of poured reinforced concrete. It became an official Museum in 1976 and is a designated National Historic Landmark.

NATU R E ’S G YM Get Yourself to the towpath! Exit the Logan Inn and head toward the back of the parking lot. There is a path that runs along the canal. Simple! Now you just have to figure out whether you want to travel North or South!
N OR TH TO S TO C K T O N, NJ It is 3.5 miles to Bridge Street - the one near Centrebridge Inn (NOTE BRIDGE STREET TO LAMBERTVILLE) You can cross this bridge over the Delaware and go to Stockton, NJ! Just keep in mind it’s another 3.5 miles back to Logan Inn, so if you’re feeling peckish, bring along some trail mix and water. Unless of course you feel like grabbing some grub in town (Stockton Inn or Via Ponte Ristorante Siciliano). If you feel like continuing this path north on the PA side, just another half mile up and you will pass Hendrick Island (It used to be part of the mainland, but Mother Nature wanted to be special and carve it out via erosion; love that woman!) But we don’t advise against crossing water to get to it.
SO U TH TO WASH I NGT O N C RO S S I N G If you are one of the few brave and bold, you can travel 5 miles South and reach Washington Crossing, PA! (OR you can drive there and explore the 400 acre park! See “Wanderlust” section for address & details).
