Logan Alumni Help Provide Chiropractic Care to Romanian Children Children in Romanian orphanages, featured in the heartbreaking television network news segments two years ago, continue to suffer from many problems related to physical and emotional neglect.

When the International Chiropractors Association announced plans last year to open a clinic serving a Romanian orphanage, Dr. Lydia Kinkead, then a Logan student, was eager to join the ICA's preceptorship program at the clinic.

Voda, Romania, where the clinic is located. Her fiance, December '92 graduate Dr. Charles Weiss, joined her in Romania during the Fall '93 trimester. Dr. Weiss held administrative and instructional responsibilities in the clinic, and also helped provide care for the children .

Dr . Kinkead graduated from Logan in December, and Drs. Kinkead and Weiss were asked by the ICA to return to Romania, as the directors of the ICA's International Service Corps, which administers the clinic. Before leaving for Romania, Drs. Kinkead and Weiss visited Florida, Georgia, and the Logan campus to discuss their experiences, and met with leaders of the ICA in Washington , D.C. Prior to returning to Romania, Drs. Kinkead and Weiss, who had been leaders of the Logan chapter of Student ICA while studying at Logan, also were named to the executive board of the ICA Council on Fitness and Sports Health Science.

Before leaving for Romania at the end of January, Drs. Kinkead and Weiss discussed their experiences with us.

Q. What kinds of physical problems do the patients in the orphanage clinic have?

Dr. Kinkead: We saw many conditions - from congenital syphilis to severe bone deformities, nutritional deprivation, and rickets.

About 50% of the children have autistic characteristics and physical problems resulting from institutionalization.

Many of the children were tied with their feet in the air at very young ages, while their bones were still soft, so that they were in position for easy changing of their diapers, or "nappies" as their caretakers call them.

freedom to move, this eliminated the need for supervision. In some cases, their joints twisted - man y of the children's patellas (kneecaps) have rotated to the backs of the ir legs. In other cases, it appears t hat bones have fused whe re joi nts should exist, although we won't be certain of that until an x-ray machine, to be delivered this month, arrives.

Diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis probably are present, because many of the children are ill for months at a time. However, diagnostic equipment and supplies are extremely limited. The Romanian government tests children for AIDS, and we were told tests showed no incidence of AIDS among the children in the ICA clinic. However, the region where Negru Voda is located has the highest incidence of AIDS in Eastern Europe, so of course we didn't have much confidence in the test results we were given.

Q. What are the clinical duties of the chiropractic interns working in the ICA clinic, and how is clinical supervision provided?

Dr. Weiss: Interns come to the clinic on rotations of at least six weeks, with clinical supervision (continued on page 4)

PAGE4 provided by DCs sent on 10-day rotations by the ICA. Romanian medical doctors also work closely with everyone in the clinic.

The chiropractic interns and clinicians perform thorough physical examinations, and provide spinal and extremity adjustments to the children whose bones and joints are determined to be relatively healthy.

In many cases, joint mobility, walking ability, etc. have improved greatly.

For example, a girl named Felicia, who has a left hemiparesis resulting from congenital syphilis, showed great improve ment in walking ability after being adjusted. However, until the x-ray unit arrives, we won't be able to determine the types of chiropractic adjustments appropriate for many of the children with bone deformities.

Dr. Kinkead: In some cases, the children with bone deformities do receive orthopedic surgery. However, post-surgical care is almost non-existent. I examined a boy who had a fresh, draining surgical wound on his leg, to which no bandaging had been applied. We help with these problems by sterilizing and bandaging wounds.

Q. How did the Romanian physicians respond to chiropractic?

Dr. Weiss: Romanian medical doctors prefer to utilize medication and surgery only when necessary, utilizing non-invasive forms of health care, such as physical therapy and rehabilitation, whenever possible. Chiropractic was completely new to them, but due to our similar philosophies, we found that many of them were intrigued by chiropractic.

We spent a week at the Municipal Hospital, on a rotation. We were asked to re vie w chronic cases, in whi ch patients had not responded to an y kind of care, to se e if we could help them.

Q. How did the children in the orphanage clinic respond to you?

Dr. Weiss: Most of the children

are very loving and crave attention in any form . Their need can be overwhelming at times - you walk down the hallway, and 30 kids all want you to pay attention to them.

It's hard to say no, but we have to do that in order to get physical exams and other work completed each day. However, we do set aside time every day to play and interact with the children.

Some of the children there have experienced sexual abuse, and will not easily tolerate any examination procedures. It can take a week to com plete a physical exam, because you ca n only do what they'll let you do on any given day.

Dr. Kinkead: It's so rewarding when the kids respond to us , though, because they've had so little outside stimulation. Many of them are in the habit of sitting and looking at their hands for hours at a time, or sitting immobile in a hallway for hours, because they've never had anything else to do.

Q. Is anything being done to improve the children's situation, apart from the care the ICA is providing?

Dr. Kinkead: International volun teers are now attempting to teach safe, healthy child-care practices to the "infirmieres" who care for the children. The volunteers find it difficult to bring about changes,

though. The children still are bathed only once or twice a week, and the infirmieres often must be persuaded to brush the children's teeth .

The Romanian medical doctors helped us communicate with the children in the clinic, but we also had to use hand-signs and other non-verbal communicatio n . The children, even those in thei r teens, often know very few words of th eir own language. Many may have normal intelligence, but they are almost entirely lacking in communication experience. The international volunteers have now established classes, in which the children are taught basic vocabulary words, shapes, and colors. Amazing as it would sound to most Americans, some of the students in these classes may be as old as 16.

The Romanian society traditionally viewed these children as " nonprodu ctive", and therefore not worthy of concern - that's why people don 't really want to take care of them. As a nation, Romanians are embarrassed by the situation, but they also want to move on, without really dealing with it.

There still is a lot of inte rnational interest in adopting Romani an children. Many people have asked us about it, and we hope to adopt two of the girls from the orphanage ourselves.

PAGES and fruits, are hard to find. In our apartment, running water was available only two to four hours a day, and there was no hot water at all in the village.

Dr. Weiss: Shopping is a very different experience there, too.

Stores sell whatever they happen to have. One store might have orange juice, space heaters, and shoes, while the next store would have other unrelated items.

Dr. Kinkead: It was a wonderful experience to be in Romania to work with the children at the clinic.

I've never had so little, yet felt so rich.

Q. What was it like to live in Romania?

Dr. Kinkead: Th e Rom anians' perceptions of Americans are very interesting, in that they're based largely on the television program, "Dallas". One result of this perception was that the Romanians tried to serve us alcoholic drinks at every meal, certain that this w as customary in the U.S. And of course, many things that we take for granted, like vegetables

SDC Donates Workout Equipment Th e Logan Student Doctors Council has donated $3,500 to the College, to cover the cost of new equipment for the College's Workout Center. As the Summer 1993 issue of the Tower reported , the Workout Center opened with a vari ety of fr ee -we ight t rain ing equipment, a Universal Aerobicycle, and a weight training mach ine. The Center is located on the low er level of the Science, Rese arch, and Ergono mics Center.

The SDC's gift made possible the purchase of a Bodyguard stairclimbing machine, a row ing machine, a Roman chair, and a ch in-up bar.

The Workout Center has been well-received by Logan students and employees. Everyone working out signs in when entering the Center, and the January register showed a total of 460 workouts.

Board of Trustees Approves Tuition Increase Th e Logan Board of Trustees met in West St. Louis County on February 5. During the Board meeting, the Trustees approved a 2% tuition increase effective September, 1994.

During the meeting, th e Board elected a member of its Advisory Counci l, Edward Glover, D.C., t o a three-year term on t he Board of Trustees. Dr. Glover, a 1953 Logan graduate from Peoria, Ill., previo usly served o n the Board of Trust ees for nine years, the maximum number of consecutive years allowed. He complet ed his last term on th e Board in 1993, and aft e r o n e year, w as eligible to serve again. As a m ember

of the Board's Advisory Council during 1993, Dr. Glover worked with the Board of Trustees, but did not have votin g privileges.

Successful Challenge Campaign Augments Logan Endowment by More Than $200,000 Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman and Director of Institutional Advancement Donald Mclain announced that a total of $127,337 had been raised by the deadline of a fund-raising challenge which the College received last fall. William M. Harris, D.C., President of the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education, offered Logan a $75,000 grant from his Alpharetta, Ga. based foundation, contingent upon the College's success in raising at least that amount by December 15. As Dr. Harris stipulated in the challenge, the money raised by Logan College, and the $75,000 awarded by the FACE have been added to the College endowment.

Dr. Harris will be the speaker at the 1994 Logan Homecoming banquet on Saturday, June 18.

by Paul Cornelius, D.C. Like many Logan alumni, Dr. Cornelius feels a very personal commitment to his alma mater - such a strong commitment, that he contributed $11,000 to help the College meet its fundDr. Cornelius raising challenge.

Dr. Cornelius, a native of Iowa, settled in the St. Louis area with his late wife, Marie, after he graduated from Logan in 1940. He enrolled at Logan because only chiropractic care had he lped his brother, who had been struck by a car. Unfortunate ly, before Dr. Cornelius completed his e ducation at Logan, his brothe r passed away. Dr. Cornelius recalls with fondness the concern and sympathy shown by ¡ the College's founder, Dr. H.B. Logan, when he learned of the brother's impending death.

Dr. Cornelius also respected Dr. Logan's insistence upon a high-quality, four-year education for his students, a nd he feels strongly about the Logan system of body mechanics and full-spine mechanical evaluation. "The Logan system was one of the greatest advances in chiropractic up to that point," says Dr. Cornelius. " And today, Logan continues to make excellent progress. The College has always made good use of its finan cial resources, a nd I feel that it is ve ry worthy of my support."

PAGES (continued from page 7) The articles describe a therapeutic full-body vest that the brothers designed for the boy to use at home, after Medicaid cutbacks reduced his weekly sessions with a physical therapist to two per month.

The vest provides light resistance when he moves his arms and legs, to help develop his muscles.

Describing the vest, Dr. Russell told the Register and Bee, "It's a very simple design (that) we can improve later. If he gets stronger, maybe this can help others." The article also noted that the Ors. Edgar do not charge the boy's mother for his visits to their office.

John Andrew Colyer, D.C., a December '93 graduate. Prior to graduating from Logan, Dr. Colyer received an Outstanding Service Award presented by the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company, in conjunction with the American Chiropractic Association.

Dr. Colyer was President of the Logan chapter of Student ACA for 1992-93. The award recognized his leadership and dedication to SACA.

Ann Berlin Keffer, D.C. '58 of Kinston, N.C., and her sister and brother in-law, Phaedra Keffer Pollock D.C. '60, and Ronald J. Pollock, D.C. '62, of Cinnaminson, N.J. William Anderson Keffer, D.C., father of Ors. Ann and Phaedra, passed away on December 30. Dr. Keffer graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1928, and studied at Logan as a postgraduate student in 1947. He practiced chiropractic in Kinston for 62 years.

Dr. Keffer served as President of the North Carolina Chiropractic Association, edited the North Carolina Chiropractic Journal, and served on the North Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He was active in legislative relations for the NCCA and served on the Board of

Trustees of Kafer Memorial Hospital in New Bern, N.C. In 1990, Dr. Keffer was named to the North Carolina Chiropractic Honor Ro ll .

Update In our last issue, we repo rted th e passing of Vivian Santiago, D.C. '47, in an automobile accident. We late r learned that Dr. Vivian's hu sband, Joseph Santiago, D.C. '40, died in November, as a result of inju ries incurred in the same accident. Th e couple resided in Colonia, N.J. , a nd had recently retired from pract ice .

A retired Lance Corporal of the U.S. Marines, Dr. Kelley received a 21gun salute at his funeral, an honor reserved for Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. Dr. Kelley practiced in House Springs, Mo., moving to Hawaii after retiring.

Logan Radiology Department Chairperson Dr. Norman Kettner announced recently that his department received a computerized thermography system . The equipment was donated to the Radiology Department by a group of midwestern physicians. Dr. Scott Becker '78 of Decatur, Ill. coordinated the donation on behalf of the group.

Dr. Kettner said the computerized thermographic unit is the College's first such equipment.

The computerized thermographic system produces images that display

important clinical findings, such as trigger points, nerve irritation, changes in vascular flow, and other causes of inflammation. Thermography is a measurement of the variations in infrared radiation emitted by the body. The computer generated images display these variations, assisting the doctor in forming a diagnosis.

Dr. Kettner said the computerized electronic thermographic system will be used for clinical instruction, research, and clinical applications in the Logan Health Centers.

Servic.e , Communication Help Make Dr. Barbara Beuckman a Success

Dr. Beuckman

The first thing one sees upon entering Dr. Barbara Beuckman's tastefully decorated office is an ornate, antique grandfather clock.

When Dr. Beuckman remodeled her office several years ago, she received the clock as a gift from a woman who had been one of her first patients. The lovely gift reflects the stability and caring atmosphere of Dr . Beuckman ' s 14-year-old practice.

Dr. Beuckman practices in a freestanding building on West Main Street, in Belleville, Ill., a southwestern Illinois city of 40,000 people. A 1980 Logan graduate, Dr. Beuckman previously received a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, where she studied philosophy and sociology.

After graduating from SIU, Dr. Beuckman began a career as a social worker with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

When she was stricken with an organic disorder for which surgery was recommended, a friend sug-

gested that she try chiropractic before scheduling surgery.

"My friend's suggestion made no sense to me," says Dr. Beuckman. "I didn't know anything about chiropractic. I was very fearful of having the surgery, though. I knew it would be painful and would involve a long recovery period."

Dr. Beuckman went to see Dr. William Dawson of Alton, Ill. "Dr. Dawson told me there probably was a causal relationship between my symptoms and a spinal problem," she says. "He said that he would treat me for a month, and that if there were no signs of improvement, I would need to pursue the surgical option. When I looked at my x-ray, what he told me made sense. I had quite a curvature."

After less than two weeks of treatment, Dr. Beuckman's symptoms had disappeared, and she never had to undergo surgery. "I was generally unwell at that time I thought because of the stress of my job, which involved child abuse investigations," she says. "However, my health improved in many respects after I began receiving chiropractic care."

Dr. Beuckman was so impressed with her results that she began taking science pre-requisite courses in the evenings, and enrolled at Logan in 1976.

While studying at Logan, Dr. Beuckman was inspired by several faculty members, especially Dr. Bert Hanicke of Logan's Chiropractic Science Division. "Dr. Hanicke believes that service is the key to successful practice," says Dr. Beuckman. "If you take care of your patients, the financial part of the practice will take care of itself. I

joined Dr. Hanicke's practice for a year after I graduated from Logan .

He and Dr. Katharine Conable (Dr. Hanicke's wife and practice partner) were wonderful role models."

Dr. Beuckman also was influenced

by Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman, then a Logan faculty member, and Dr. Ralph Filson, also of Logan's Chiropractic Science Division. "Dr . Goodma n is an excellent adjustor, and he has a very strong chiropractic philosophy," she says. "I've always been attracted to mentors with strong philosophies.

Dr. Filson also is very serviceoriented, and a great adj ustor. He helped me a great deal my fir st year in practice on my own, as did Dr. lim Hackney ('73) of O'Fallon ."

Dr. Beuckman has built a t hriving practice, based on strong relation ships with patients and other health professionals. Dr . Beuckman is active in numerous community groups, and is the first and only chiropractic physician to serve on the St. Clair County Board of Health .

"Chiropractic has been very wellaccepted in the Belleville area, due to the efforts of some of the early pioneers of the profession," says Dr. Beuckman. "People in the area often look at chiropractic as one of the first avenues of care, or at least not only as a last resort. I am able to maintain good professional relationships with medical doctors, making for comfort in referring patients back and forth.

"Often, people will consult with me on problems that I think they know are not within the scope of chiropractic. However, they want advice on where to go to address their situations. I think many of (continued on page 10)

these people come to me because of the relationships I've built with their relatives or friends.

"My practice is based on preventive care. I definitely have a wellness practice, and many patients who want maintenance care . I only accept patients who are willing to be actively involved in the health care process. I view myself as an agent in helping them to maintain their health."

Dr. Beuckman credits the four women who work in her office with keeping her practice running smoothly. The office includes a large reception area, two treatment rooms, a consultation office, an xray room , and a separate suite that can be used for treatment by a second doctor.

Dr. Beuckman practiced with Dr. Larry Vick '77 for seven years, until he began practicing with his son last year. Dr. Bueckman says, "I ' m looking for an associate practitioner, although Dr. Vick was an excellent business companion, and it will be difficult to replace him. He is a good friend, and my personal doctor."

Of her practice, Dr. Beuckman says, "We are set up for efficiency, and we try to work with efficiency as our goal. However, I've never adopted the ' practice management' approach . I do my work, and my staff members are great about solving operational and other problems. I' m fortunate to have a very stable staff situation. We have regular staff meetings, and everyone 's input is instrumental. My staff always gives a little extra - to the practice, to me, and to the patients. " Dr. Beuckman feels that factors such as diagnostic ability and technical skill alone are not enough to build a successful practice. " I think it's very important that I set aside time to address whatever my patients need to discuss," she says.

"Communication is the bottom line."

Logan Students, Faculty Members Help Developmentally Disabled Adults The Rainbow Activity Center for mentally handicapped and developmentally disabled adults in Union , Mo. is now welcoming Logan Health Center interns each week, as part of a new rehabilitative therapy program provided by the College.

The Rainbow Center serves clients whose conditions range from mild physical disability to Cerebral Palsy and Downs Syndrome. Most have some degree of neurological impairment and/ or muscular atrophy, which affects their physical abilities.

One client may walk with a slight limp and have deficient eye-hand coordination, while another may have motor skills as limited as a baby's. Some of the clients are

withdrawn and passive, wh ile others, despite limited speaking capabilities, are very outgoing. " Our clients have a va riety o f conditions - some genetic, others caused by accidents or diseases," says Rainbow Center directo r Joyce Buckner, who has worked at the center for six of its 10 years. The 23 Rainbow clients work with staff members of the Center, learning new skills and behaviors, with the goal of increasing individua l selfsufficiency.

Providing physical support and frequent encouragement, three interns work with one client, moving her left hand and right leg forward simultaneously, as if she were walking. Other interns help a young man perform eye-hand coordination exercises, while another client, with the gentle assistance of an intern, slowly rotates his head from side to side.

Specialized rehabilitative therapy helps the most physically disabled Rainbow clients learn basic movement patterns that most of us take for granted, Buckner explains. Eventually, therapy may enable some of the clients to stand without assistance, walk, or feed themselves.

However, they will have to work for long periods of time, establishing nervous system response patterns needed to complete movements or maintain upright posture.

In less severe cases, therapy helps clients overcome minor physical problems. They may learn to control

PAGE 11 involuntary jerking movements, drink without frequent spills, etc.

Until early last summer, a physical therapist visited the Rainbow Center each week to provide rehabilitative therapy. When the therapist left the area, Buckner requested permission from the Center Board of Directors to arrange a rehabilitative therapy program with Logan College.

Buckner learned of the availability of Logan interns and faculty members to provide therapy from Dr. Elmer Hawkinson, Instructor of Chiropractic Science at Logan. Dr. Hawkinson's son, Billy, is a Rainbow client.

After testing the Rainbow clients and reviewing their medical files, Dr. Patrick Venditti, who formerly directed the Logan Ergonomics Center and continues to consult with the College, developed a treatment plan for each Rainbow client. Dr. Venditti used an assessment chart which rates the degree of neurological function necessary for numerous activities.

The Rainbow clients receive standard therapeutic procedures recommended for their individual physical

conditions, including passive ran ge of motion exercises, joint mobilization , neurological patterning te chniques, gait training, posture an d balance practice, movem ent th e rapy, and cross-crawl patte rns. " I have seen great im proveme nt in many of our clients since t he Logan interns began wo rking wit h them ," says Buckner. "Si nce th ree or more interns may work with e ach individual, each client accompl ishes more in therapy than was po ss ib le with one therapist."

The Logan interns have deve loped close, caring relat io nships with the Rainbow clients they are helping. Logan intern Tina Theriot, Trimester 9, says, "Working with th e Rainbow clients has bee n a n extremely rewarding e xpe ri ence, emotionally and educatio nally."

The January 26 issue of the Franklin County Tribune, a newspaper published in Union, ca rried a lengthy article which desc ribed Logan 's rehabilitative the rapy program at the Rainbow Ce nter, and the educational qualificati ons o f the Logan students and clin icians provid ing therapy.

Dr. Parry Chairs Missouri Chiropractic Health Reform Task Force As the debate on health care reform heats up again at the national level, Missourians are discussing a state health care program. And, as is true at the national level, coverage of chiropractic services under the anticipated state health program is uncertain. At publication, a proposal from the office of Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan was soon to be released.

Under the leadership of Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman, the College is working to increase state-wide coordination of health planning and initiatives to ensure chiropractic inclusion in state-administered health care. Dr. Goodman has assigned governmental affairs duties at Logan to Dr. Allen Parry, Dean of Postgraduate Education.

Dr. Parry chairs the Missouri Chiropractic Health Reform Task Force. The MCHRTF is a coalition representing Logan College and Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City; the Missouri Board of Chiropractic Examiners, the Missouri State Chiropractors Association, and representatives of the general public.

Dr. Parry said that if a Missouri health plan is implemented, Missouri will become one of several states serving as a testing ground for national health care reform. On Jan. 28, The Wall Street Journal reported that a new state health plan in Oregon was set to begin on Feb. 1, and Dr. Parry said that Florida also was considering a state health program.

Dr. Parry recently discussed the issues facing chiropractic physicians in Missouri as the health care reform process begins:

Q. What concerns of the chiropractic profession in Missouri are being addressed by the MCHRTB Dr. Parry: The MCHRTF has drafted a set of recommendations applying to any state health care program that is considered by legislators.

The recommendations stress the importance of ensuring the consumer's freedom to choose from licensed health care providers; prohibiting anti-competitive practices and discrimination; ensuring representation from all statelicensed health professions, including chiropractic, at all levels on state health care planning, monitoring, policy-making bodies; maintaining access to chiropractic physicians as primary care and "portal of entry" providers, and integration of chiropractic into community-based health education and screening programs.

Q. What actions are being taken to expand awareness of these issues among legislators?

Dr. Parry: I recently began traveling throughout Missouri, meeting with groups of DCs to discuss the recommendations of the MCHRTF, and providing written information

for the doctors' use. The doctors are encouraged to familiarize them selves thoroughly with the issues, and then to become active in conducting grass roots lob b ying efforts. They are asked to begin by visiting state senators and representatives in their districts to discuss our concerns.

Also, we ask the doctors to request their patients' permission to provide their names and addresses to the ACA patient data base. All of the name and addresses of chiropractic patients provided t h rou gh this effort will be available o n t he state level, to the state o rga n izations. In Missouri, the Misso u ri State Chiropractors Association will be able to utilize the data base.

We suggest that the doctors contact the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Rese arch, to obtain copies of the Manga report.

This report, of a study con d ucte d by the Ontario Ministry of Hea lth Care, documents overwhelming ev id ence favoring the use of chiropract ic care for the majority of cases of low back pain. The report recommends that DCs in Ontario function as the "gatekeepers" for evaluation of LBP. The report also recognizes that the effectiveness of chiropractic in treating some other conditions also is documented.

Q. What about the general public - how is the MCHRTF building public awareness of its concerns?

Dr. Parry: As chairperson of the MCHRTF, I have been interviewed on two radio shows in recent weeks, and I anticipate similar opportunities during the next few months.

Doctors throughout the state, who become involved in working with the MCHRTF, also will be encouraged to utilize such opportunities at the local level.

When I speak to members of the public, I emphasize the two consumer choices which might be lost under a state-administered health plan, unless specific language guar-

THE TOWER/WINTER 1994 anteeing their continuation is inserted in the proposal: the choice of utilizing qualified, state-licensed, but non-medical providers, and primary access to chiropractic physicians, without prior screening by other health professionals designated as gatekeepers.

If we provide information directly to the public, we can ensure that our positions are explained thoroughly and accurately. DCs can discuss the length and diagnostic comprehensiveness of our educational programs, and our licensure requirements, of which many people are unaware. Finally, we can discuss the relationship of our education to our role as primary health care providers.

Q. Is the MCHRTF providing additional information services to doctors who have not previously been active politically, or those who lack familiarity with the health reform process?

Dr. Parry: Absolutely. Anyone can call my office at Logan, at 314/2272100, with questions any time. We want to help everyone become involved .

I don't want to sound like an alarmist. It's important for everyone

PAGE 13 to realize that the health care reform process will be a long one, and our work toward inclusion will go on for a very long time. However, I think some things are worth fighting for.

It's time for DCs, at the state and national levels, to stand up and say, "We already serve as portal of entry providers, and we have educational qualifications to maintain and expand our primary health care provider role ."

The issue will heat up and cool down periodically, but we must apply a constant effort. Our dialogue with decision makers must be an ongoing process.

Q. What about DCs outside Missouri? How do you recommend that they become active in the health reform process at the national level?

Dr. Parry: Keeping abreast of the efforts being made by any national and state associations in which they hold membership is crucial, as is responding to all requests for help - from visiting legislators, to assisting with the initiation of the nation a I grass roots effort by chiropractic patients.

Allen Parry, D.C., Dean of Postgraduate Education, has been named a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors.

A 1973 graduate of Logan College, Dr. Parry practiced in Michigan until 1984, when he returned to Logan as a faculty member. During the past decade, he has led expansion of Logan's postgraduate course offerings. This expansion has enabled the College to become a postgraduate educational leader within the chiropractic profession, in areas such as sports injury care, chiropractic orthopedics and neurology, acupuncture, and specialized technique instruction.

Dr. Parry also has been active politically, and currently chairs the Missouri Chiropractic Health Reform Task Force (see article on page 12).

D. Robert Kuhn, D.C., DACBR, Assistant Professor of Clinical Science, has been named to the test rating committee of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Dr. Kuhn will participate in a review and possible revision of Part 11 of the national chiropractic board examinations.

In addition, Dr. Kuhn, who swam competitively in his youth, reentered competitive swimming last year. He is now ranked as the fastest breast-stroke swimmer in his age group in Missouri.

Todd Ryan, D.C., a December '93 Logan graduate, has been appointed a Resident in Radiology at the College. During the three-year residency program, Dr. Ryan will work under the supervision of faculty members of the Logan Radiology Department. Dr. Ryan's duties will include interpretation of x-rays, instruction of clinical interns and radiology classes, and attendance at local and national confer-

Logan College Represented at Local and National Events Logan representatives have traveled many miles in Missouri and other states during the winter months, exchanging information with numerous groups: political leaders, alumni, other doctors, and colleagues from other colleges.

Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman and other Logan representatives often meet with state and national political leaders, initiating serious policy discussions and attending social functions hosted by officials. On January 6, Dr. Goodman was among several hundred Missouri leaders who attended the annual Governor's Prayer Breakfast, held in the state capital, Jefferson City. The event was hosted by Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan .

Dr . Goodman and Donald Mclain, Director of Institutional

Advancement, traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception given by Congressman James M. Talent of Missouri's Second Congressional District, in which Logan is located. During the reception, Dr. Goodman and Mclain had an opportunity to briefly discuss health care reform with Rep. Talent and with U.S. Senator Kit Bond of Missouri. Mclain also represented Logan College at a luncheon given recently by Missouri State Rep. Gloria Weber, who represents a district in South St. Louis County.

Before and after the winter holidays, Logan representatives also attended several professional gatherings. In November, Dr. Goodman and Placement Services Director JoAnn Hewitt traveled to Columbus, Ohio for the convention of the

Ohio State Chiropractic Association.

During the convention, Dr. Goodman recognized Logan alumna Robin Hunter, D.C., for he r induction into the International College of Chiropractors (see "Alumni Notes," page 7, column 3) .

In December, Hewitt represented Logan at the winter convention of the Florida State Chiropractic Association in Fort Lauderdale.

In January, the 11th annual conference of the Development, Alumni, and Public Relations Consortium of Chiropractic Colleges was attended by Sharon Kehrer, Vice President of Adm inistrative Affairs, Ivy Hill, Alumn i Director, and Mclain . The confere nce was held at Western States Chirop ractic College in Portland, Ore.

Logan Featured in Magazine Article on Chiropractic A two-page article titled "The Growth of Chiropractic" appeared in the January 1994 issue of St. Louis Commerce magazine, the monthly publication of the St. Louis Regional Commerce & Growth Association.

Laura S. Barlow, editor of the magazine, visited the Logan campus prior to writing the article, and interviewed Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman.

In addition to describing the increasing use and acceptance of chiropractic throughout the world, the article discussed the strong increase in both inquiries and enrollment at Logan College. Also described was some of the work done at the Logan Ergonomics Center.

A color photo of Dr. Goodman with Sharon Kehrer, Vice President of Administrative Affairs, taken in the Ergonomics Center, was one of three photos illustrating the article.

Ors. David Hoffmann '85 and William Madosky '87 also were pictured and quoted extensively in the article. Both doctors practice in the St. Louis area.

Dr. John Kiernan, Logan Health Center Clinician, spoke to St. Louis-area middle school students recently, when they visited the Logan Ergonomics Center during a program held on the Logan campus by Pro-Sports Counseling. Pro-Sports Counseling, headed by former pro basketball player Art Williams, educates young people on the effects of drug abuse, and maintaining good health.

Christmas Gift Program Achieves Record Success Kathleen Naughton, D.C., C.C.S.P., Assistant Director of Cl inical Assessment and Clinical Education, led a record-breaking fundraising effort for Christmas gifts for St. Louis-area homeless people. The 1993 Christmas Gift for the Homeless Program raised $5,500. The money was used to purchase warm clothing for distribution in gift packages to about 300 homeless men and women.

The fund-raising goal for the '93 Christmas gift program was $5,000.

In each of the three pre vious years that Logan has sponsored the program under Dr. Naughton's leadership, the amount raised has averaged about $4,000.

Logan staff members and students helped Dr. Naughton distribute about 150 of the gifts on Christmas Day, at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, and at the United Methodist Ministry Shalom House, both in St. Louis.

for homeless veterans, sponsored by the St. Louis County Office of Veterans Affairs.

Dr. Naughton and John Eckhoff of the St. Louis County Office of Veterans Affairs discussed the Christmas Gift for the Homeless program during a morning news show on KTVl-TV, Channel 2, of St. Louis. Their interview aired on December 12. Joseph Kinsella, D.C., Director of the Logan Health Center at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, also discussed the Christmas gift program and Logan's health care services for the homeless during a radio interview. Dr. Kinsella's interview aired on sister stations KFNS-AM and KEZK-FM on December 18 and 19.

Several local newspapers also reported on Logan 's fund-raising activities for the Christmas gift program, which included a bake sale, a bench press contest, and the annual bowl-a-thon sponsored by the Logan chapter of Chi Rho Sigma, national professional chiropractic fraternity.

In addition, the Sports Cafe in northwest St. Louis County donated the proceeds of a fund-raising dinner at the restaurant to the Christmas gift program. The Sports Cafe dinner was arranged by Dr.

Allen Parry, Dean of Postgraduate Education, and his wife, Mitzi. M rs.

Parry is a co-owner of the Spo rts Cafe.

An article which appeared in several of the St. Louis Suburban Journals quoted Dr. Naughto n a nd Logan student Chris Stand ri ng , Trimester 7, who suggested the bench press contest as a fund-raiser for the Christmas gift program.

On December 26, an article in t he St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on the Christmas Gift program, quoting Dr. Naughton and Health Center secretary Elaine Kumm. Post Dispatch reporter Tom W heatley attended the presentation o f gifts at Harbor Light and the Shalom Hou se, and interviewed gift recipients.

The two-column article by Wheatley began, "The people at Logan College of Chiropractic are famed for knowing how to fix sore backs.

On Christmas morning, they di d a flipflop and went to work o n some aching hearts."

Notice to the Membership

The Logan Alumni Auxiliary requests your help in breaking the $10,000 barrier at this year's Silent Auction.

The auction will be held during the 50's Sock Hop on Friday, June 17th at the 1994 Logan Alumni Homecoming.

The Auxiliary needs donated items in all price ranges from all parts of the country. Officers suggest T-shirts, cookbooks, office equipment, books, jewelry, etc. If you prefer, send a $25 donation with your registration and the Auxiliary will obtain extra items. All proceeds will go to the Logan College Development and Scholarship Fund.

Please bring your item(s) to the Auxiliary Registration Booth on Thursday morning, June 16th or the Alumni Registration Desk on Friday morning, June 17th at the St. Louis Marriott Airport Hotel. Come and help make this year's auction a great success!

After careful study of the Logan College Alumni Association Bylaws, the Resolutions and Bylaws Committee recommended to the Board of Directors at the October 1, 1993 board meeting to add Section 12 to Article V of the Bylaws.

The proposed addition reads: "The committees of the Board shall conduct business in accordance with written committee guidelines. Said guidelines must be approved by the Board and followed with regard to deadlines, protocol, and procedures unless amended by the Board."

Your board of directors voted in favor of presenting this proposed addition to the membership during the general business meeting on Friday, June 17, 1994, at the St. Louis Marriott Airport Hotel.

Logan College and St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel Speakers: Scott Bautch, D.C., of Wausau, Wis., is a Certified Chiropractic Industrial Consultant. A Fellow of the American Back Society, he has Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Occupational Health. Dr. Bautch co-authored The Industrial Carpal Tunnel (a manual for physicians), and a book, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Practical Guide for Those Who Work with Their Hands.

Dr. Bautch has instructed adjustors of Wausau Insurance, in the area of workers' compensation. He serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Chiropractic Industrial Consultants, and is an instructor in the Logan Postgraduate Department. He graduated from Logan College in 1983.

Steven Conway, D.C., co-authored the Industrial Carpal Tunnel manual and Carpal Tunnel Syn- - - - - - - drome: A Practical Guide for Those Who Work with Their Hands, with Dr. Scott Bautch. Dr. Conway holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Occupa-

tional Health, and serves on the Logan Postgraduate Department faculty.

A 1983 Logan College graduate, Dr. Conway practices in Janesville, Wis. He is a Certified Chiropractic Industrial Consultant, and was selected as the 1992 Wisconsin Chiropractic Association "Chiropractor of the Year".

Gordon A. Ireland, Pharm.D., is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Science at Logan College, and an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

He provides consultation and training services in clinical pharmacy for St. Louis-area hospitals.

Dr. Ireland has published numerous articles in pharmaceutical and clinical chemistry journals, and edited the Handbook of Pharmacokinetic Data of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Ireland received the Pharm.D. degree from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, and studied for one year at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

John E. Danz, D.C., DACBR, is a St. Louis-based diagnostic imaging special ist, with a practice --~----. limited to radiologic consulting. His subspecialty is joint motion fluoroscopy. Dr. Danz is a 1971 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He holds memberships in the American Chiropractic College of Radiology, and the ACA Council on Diagnostic Imaging. He served on the Logan College faculty for a total of nine years between 1973 and 1984.

Donald Aspegren, D.C., of Lakewood, Colo., is a National College of Chiropractic graduate. In 1993, he was selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee to provide care to athletes at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Also in 1993, he became National Director of Education for the Wrangler SportsChiropractic program, which arranges chiropractic care for U.S. rodeo participants.

THE TOWER/WINTER 1994 Dr. Aspegren has published numerous sports-injury related articles in peerreviewed chiropractic journals. He recently taught postgraduate seminars sponsored by Logan and Northwestern colleges of chiropractic, to prepare doctors to join the Wrangler Sports Chiropractic program. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Chiropractic Sports Medicine, and on the expert panelists' board of D. C. Tracts.

Daniel J. Murphy, D.C., of Pleasanton , Cal. , has Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists, and is a Fellow of the American Board of Orthopedists. He has managed and treated more than 4,000 spinal trauma cases. Dr. Murphy graduated Magna Cum Laude from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Ore. He holds postgraduate instructional appointments at five chiropractic colleges, including Logan College, and is a faculty member of Life Chiropractic College-West.

Dr. Murphy was the International Chiropractors Association " Postgraduate Instructor of the Year" for 1987 and 1991 . He has spoken at national conventions of the ICA and the American Chiropractic Association .

Frederick R. Carrick, D.C., of St. Cloud, Fla. is the primary instructor of neurology for the Logan Postgraduate Department. He has published articles in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, and has lectured extensively throughout the U.S. Dr. Carrick is a graduate of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. He has Diplomate status in the American Chiropractic Academy of Neurology, and in the American College of Chiropractic Neurology. He was the ACCN "Chiropractor of the Year" for 1988.

Scott Banks, D.C., F.l.C.C., is the editor of Spinal Manipulation : A Review of Current Literature.

He has published articles in numerous peer reviewed journ a Is , and taught Logan Postgraduate Department seminars in areas such as chiropractic orthopedics, scoliosis, sports injuries, and nutrition .

A 1977 graduate of Logan College, Dr. Banks practices in Virginia Beach, Va . He served on the Boston Marathon teams of the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research for five consecutive years , and received the Ray Gordon Spirit of Running Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of running.

James J. Lehman, D.C., of Albuquerque, N.M ., is a Logan Postgraduate Department instructor of chiropractic orthopedics. Dr. Lehman holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists.

He became a provider for the Lovelace Health Plan , New Mexico's largest HMO, in 1985. Now practicing privately in Albuquerque, Dr. Lehman previously served as the Chairman of the Chiropractic Department of Lovelace, Inc., an integrated health care corporation owned by CIGNA. A 1972 Logan graduate, Dr. Lehman is the founder of The Lehman Company, a practice enhancement consulting firm.

He lectures throughout the U.S.

Donald D. Harrison, D.C., of Harvest, Ala. , is a graduate of Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Ore. He wrote three Pettibon technique textbooks, and is the author of two textbooks on Chiropractic Biophysics: Technique and Spinal Biomechanics.

Dr. Harrison developed the CBP technique.

Dr. Harrison has served on the

faculties of Life Chiropracti c College West and Palm e r Colleg e of Chiropra ctic-West, both in California .

He co-author ed articl es o n spin al biomechanics, now und er rev iew for publication in indexed medi ca l j ourna ls, and articles on x-ray analysi s re li ab ility.

Guy Riekeman, D.C., of Colorado Springs, Colo ., graduated in 1972 from Palmer College of Chiropractic, with academi c honors. A co-founder of Renaissance International (1977) , he co produced the Renaissance International films on chiropractic which featured Peter Graves, Russell Erhardt, D.C. , and other entertainers and doctors.

Donkin graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena, Tex. He is the author of the book, Sitting on the Job, and developed the " Sitting on the Job" action pack, a presentation program addressing the effects of stress, environmental conditions, and poor posture on the job.

Dr. Donkin also has published articles in chiropractic publications, including the ACA Journal of Chiropractic, and has authored articles on back pain for general publications, such as Vitality magazine. He has made numerous presentations before business organizations.
