Board's announcement of its selection of Dr. Goodman as PresidentElect of the College.

The new era in the history of Logan College had its formal beginning with Dr. Goodman's inauguration on the evening of February 6.

The investiture took place at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton, with the Chairperson of the Logan Board of Trustees, Dr. Ronald Harris, officiating. The event was attended by many Logan faculty members and administrators, the Logan Board of Trustees and Alumni Association Board of Directors, and prominent representatives of chiropractic state and national associations and of the profession's educational and licensing sectors.

Dr. Goodman's wife, Linda Goodman, and their sons, Jason and Christopher, were present, as was Dr. Goodman's mother, Mrs. Judith Goodman of Peoria, Ill.

The invocation was delivered by Dr. Edward Glover, who recently completed nine years on the Logan Board of Trustees (the maximum allowable consecutive years). Dr. Glover is now serving on the Board's Advisory Council. A resi dent of Peoria, Ill., Dr. Goodman's home town, Dr. Glover provided advice which was instrumental in Dr. Goodman's decision to attend Logan.

Dr. Harris offered special recognition to the inaugural pl anning committee, chaired by Dr. Virginia Brown of the Board of Trustees.

Three other Board members - Dr. Howard Chapel, Dr. E.L. Strotheide, and Mr. Robert Stearley and Executive Secretary Rose Jordan served on the committee with Dr. Brown.

vered the keynote address. Dr. Ramsey has had a long and distinguished career as an educational administrator, and he outlined many of the roles and qualities of leadership which are essential to effectiveness as a college president.

Following his installation as President by Dr. Harris, Dr. Goodman addressed those present, focusing on the challenges facing the chiropractic profession as health care in the U.S. undergoes change (see text of his address on pages 5 and 6).

Brief presentations welcoming Dr. Goodman were made by the chiropractic college delegates in attendance ; Dr. Robyn Wilkerson , President of the Logan College Faculty Council; Dr. Anthony Bilott, President of the Logan College Alumni Association; Missouri State Senator Thomas McCarthy, and Dr. Brad Rasch, a Logan alumnus, and his wife, Jan Rasch .

Senator McCarthy, who also is a member of the Logan Board of Trustees, presented a resolution from the Missouri State Senate, recognizing Dr. Goodman on the occasion of his inauguration. Dr. and Mrs. Rasch presented a certif-

icate signed by Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice, proclaiming February 6 as Logan College of Chiropractic Day in Mississippi. Mrs. Rasch was the campaign director and now serves as Director of Constituent Services for Governor Fordice.

Dr. Bilott offered his personal

recollections of Dr. Goodman's supportiveness as a faculty member, and presented the Alumni Association's inaugural gift: pape rweights commemorating the in ve stit u re , provided for Dr. Good man and each of the guests.

Musical performances we re provided by violinist Paul Ettlinge r, a Trimester 2 student at Logan, and the choir of Grace Chapel Lutheran Church of Bellefontaine Neighbors, a St. Louis suburb.

After the inauguration, Dr. Goodman commented : "We wou ld li ke to extend special than ks to the Alumni Association fo r providing the commemorative pape rweights for all who attended tonight's ceremony. We will enjoy these attractive mementos for many years to come." Dr. Goodma n al so announced plans to host a reception on ¡campus, to afford Loga n students and faculty members an o ppo rt unity to visit with him infor mall y. The reception was held o n Sunday, February 14.

Presidential Inaugural Address

by George A. Goodman, D.C., F.l.C.C.

Ladies and gentlemen, members of the Logan College family, guests, fellow professionals, and friends : It is with a great deal of honor and deep appreciation that I accept the charge and responsibilities given to me by the Board of Trustees of Logan College of Chiropractic. Rest assured that I will devote my entire energy, will, experience, talents, and efforts - to the fullest extent of my abilities - to provide leadership and direction as the President of Logan College.

The extent to which any of us within the chiropractic profession will be able to provide the leadership and guidance necessary for the continued and future success of this profession will be substantially influenced within the ensuing years and even months.

The nation is facing a health care crisis both in terms of uniform availability of care and in terms of health care financing. This health care crisis has been addressed by various means by the various health professions and will definitely be a priority of the Clinton administration and the new Congress. Like-

wise, the state legislatures will have to face certain long-term policy making decisions within this same time frame.

No other health care profession parallels chiropractic in its unique position in the health care delivery and reimbursement systems. The challenges we encountered in the past, along with the distance from which we have been kept from many aspects of the mainstream health care delivery system, have combined to create a strong chiropractic profession which has been quite successful in remaining an independent branch of the healing arts.

The current health care crisis has provided chiropractic with an interesting situation. We do and will share a common goal with the other healing arts to provide a health care delivery and finance system which is mutually equitable among the patient, payor and the doctor.

At the same time, we probably will find ourselves at odds with individuals representing other branches of the healing arts and their political supporters opposing our inclusion in the new health care delivery and finance system. The question on most D.C.s' minds should be: to what extent will chiropractic services be included or excluded in any new comprehensive government reforms pertaining to the health care system?

It is interesting to realize that, while we have generally not been included in such programs as HMOs and PPOs, we have also been immune to managed health care, which has been a part of daily professional life for the medical profession. So another question arises, regarding the chiropractic profession's willingness to accept the controls inherent within managed health care. Our independence and individualism served us well in the past, enabling us to survive many challenges to our very existence.

However, some aspects of this independence and individualism may not serve us well, if we are to survive in the new system which will certainly begin implementation in the near future .

Therefore, we must look at our profession - from the individual practitioner, to the chiropractic colleges, to the national associations, to our regulatory boards and examine the degree to which we will be able to adapt for inclusion in these comprehensive changes. Adaptation and revisi on are ongoing processes in any educational arena.

What will be the role of the chiropractic educationa l system in preparing the profession for a referred health care delivery system?

•

Please do not misunderstand my assessment of the need for reform in our health care delivery system.

Currently, we have a nation in which millions of Americans do not qualify for any health benefits. We have a system which is not equitable in the delivery of basic human needs, including health care services. Clearly, it is the consensus of conventional wisdom among government and health care leaders that health care reform is long past due. (continued on page 6)

PAGE6 (continued from page 5) We must examine our educational process and quality, our standards of practice, our professional integrity and ethics, the support and stability of our colleges, and our professional maturity. It is the combination of these and other factors which will contribute to the realization of success or disappointment for doctors of chiropractic and their patients.

The financial support of alumni and friends of chiropractic colleges has always been an important part of the fiscal stability of the colleges.

The fact still remains that chiropractic colleges are tuition driven, since they lack the publicly funded status that many other health professions enjoy. But without question the primary support that can be provided by anybody, especially chiropractic college alumni , is the referral of men and women to the chiropractic colleges to become students, and eventually D.C.s.

The Mercy Conference provided a successful beginning to address consistent yet adaptable standards of practice. I pledge Logan's commitment in continuing to develop standards of practice reflective of our profession while ensuring the continuation of progress in contemporary practice.

Professional maturity can refer to many parameters. We hear of the need for more research in our profession . Frankly, it has been difficult, yet will be absolutely necessary, for chiropractic colleges to find the resources, both financial and professional, to provide viable quality programs <>n a substantial scale. We must develop research programs which combine the uniqueness of our profession with essential areas of interest in society.

Examples of these programs may include work-injury prevention, sports injury treatment, and other such areas of interest. Joint ventures with colleges and universities can extend our resources for research.

What will be the role of the chiropractic educational system in preparing the profession for a referred health care delivery system? I truly believe that it is the responsibility of chiropractic col-

THE TOWER/WINTER 1993 leges and chiropractic education to face the challenge of leadership, and to provide guidance for the profession .

We must provide training and orientation to existing doctors of chiropractic to help in the transition to a managed health care delivery.

It would be a mistake to think that managed health care simply refers to the financial aspects of practice.

â&#x20AC;˘ We must now

truly, more than ever before, consolidate and coordinate our efforts to insure that we have equitable inclusion in the reformed health care delivery system.

â&#x20AC;˘ Other health care providers have had to face the reality that managed health care affects the way in which the individual practitioner can actually provide care to patients. My commitment to you is that Logan College will always maintain the unique character and services of chiropractic in meeting our challenges. We are talking about adaptation - not absorption .

I will summarize by saying that we must remain vigilant of the forces outside of our profession which would try to exclude us and the powers within our profession which would try to control us. But, as a profession, we must also possess the foresight, maturity, and realization that we will have to adapt to a new system of health care delivery. We must now truly, more than ever before, consolidate and coordinate

our efforts to insure that we have equitable inclusion in the reformed health care delivery system. Much public and political work is ahead of us - each and every on e of us.

Logan College has been a leader within our profession . The inn ovative techniques of Dr. Hugh B. Logan are unprecede nted. The college has always provided a quality and contemporary doctoral degree program. Our post graduate offerings have enabled practitioners to remain current on advancements within the chiropractic profession .

An essential cornerstone for chiropractic education has been the capability of Logan Colleg e to demonstrate innovatio n, imagination, and implementatio n of improved educational oppo rtunities.

Logan can be prou d of its past and will be proud of its fut ure. We are a dynamic college in a dynamic profession, in a dynamic society. We will take a leadership role in answering the needs of this necessary profession and of our society.

Logan College is a co mm unity, a family composed of ma ny facets and individuals. But, it is the amalgamation of these com po ne nts that drives our common purpose and mission - that of sustaini ng chiropractic principles and practice. The administration, faculty, staff, and students have many qualities and skills to offer our college . As President, I see my role as a coworker possessing, or learning, or utilizing these collective talents for the betterment of the profession, the college, and each individual.

I will conclude by thanking my fellow educators, my fellow practitioners, my friends, and the love and support of my family for the responsibilities and blessings which I have received and am about to undertake. I happen to be one of the fallible humans who does not have all of the answers.

Therefore, I will require the advice and support of all of you in the discharge of my duties as President of Logan College. I thank you all for being here and for your show of support, and I promise I will do everything within my capabilities to represent this fine institution and profession .

Retirement Festivities Honor Dr. Hagen Three events .held in recent months marked the December 31 retirement of former Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen .

The North Carolina Chiropractic Association honored Dr. Hagen with a reception held Nov. 13 during the Association 's meeting in Pinehurst, N.C. Members of the Association also raised $2,100 to fund a scholarship honoring Dr. Hagen, to be awarded to one or more North Carolina students attending Logan.

Dr. Faye Eagles '53 of Rocky Mount, N.C. is coordinating the scholarship program. Dr. Eagles will lead a committee of doctors from North Carolina in setting up guidelines for the scholarship. She hopes to accomplish this task and announce the details of the scholarship program this spring.

A short program and luncheon on December 15 in the College gymnasium provided an opportunity for Logan faculty and staff members to honor Dr. Hagen and visit with her as her retirement date approached.

On Saturday, January 16, the Logan Board of Trustees hosted a retirement banquet for Dr. Hagen at the Sheraton Plaza in West St. Louis

among the guests. The co uple resides in Herkimer, N.Y. Karen Bromley of New Yo rk City, one of Dr. Hagen's two dau ghters, also attended and spoke to those present: " My sister and brothers and I have appreciated our mother's dedication to chiropractic - chiropractic always has been a wonderful service to us," she said. Describing Dr. Hagen 's strong commitment to her family, Bromley concluded: " We just wanted you all to know how special she is."

Dr. Gretchen Schreffler, a member of the Logan Board of Trustees, also spoke, describing Dr. Hagen 's distinguished career and their 50year friendship, which in recent years has become very close. "She has been my real friend," said Dr. Schreffler.

Dr. Schreffler shared her memories of Dr. Hagen as a student who spent long hours working in the College's printing department, and concluded with an overview of the major accomplishments of Dr. Hagen's presidency, and a toast: "Bea, we honor you for the three H's : (continued on page 8)

Other speakers at the banquet included Dr. Edward Glover of the Board of Trustees, who delivered the invocation; Dr. Ronald Harris, Chairperson of the Logan Board of Trustees; Logan President Dr. George Goodman; Dr. Anthony Bilott, President of the Logan Alumni Association; and Randy Troutman, Trimester 7, Vice President of the Logan Student Doctors Council.

Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, Director of Admissions and President of the Logan Faculty Council, "roasted" Dr. Hagen. Dr. Wilkerson gave a humorous account of Dr. Hagen's enjoyment of Logan's frequent receptions, luncheons, and other on-campus events, describing her as a "party animal."

Robert Stearley of the Board of Trustees presented three gifts to Dr. Hagen: a Steuben crystal sculpture, titled "Star Stream"; a rhinestonestudded pendant necklace, and a book of letters to Dr. Hagen, written

by the banquet attendees and other friends. Rose Jordan, Dr. Hagen's long-time secretary, presented a silver candelabra, holding lit candles, on behalf of Delaine Hayes, D.C. '86. A close friend of Dr. Hagen's, Dr. Hayes lives in Waupaca, Wis. and was unable to attend the banquet.

Dr. Hagen spoke following the gift presentations, saying, "So many people have contributed to the growth of Logan College, and I appreciate each and every one of you."

Dr. Hagen concluded: "I have suffered through several physical situations, and it has always been chiropractic that brought me through in good health. I hope you all will continue to ensure that Logan College graduates are the most confident and competent chiropractors - who know that the adjustment affects health. Yes, I am devoted to chiropractic, and I appreciate everything it's done for me, for my family, and for all of the patients who've received our care."

Logan Student Meets President Clinton

Sandra Bon, a Trimester 7 student at Logan College, met President Bill Clinton during his February 18 visit to St. Louis to promote his economic plan. President Clinton spoke at St. Louis Union Station. As an employee of a store at Union Station, Bon received a front-row ticket to the President's program.

She presented him with a Logan College sweatshirt, and made a brief statement regarding the need for chiropractic's inclusion in health care reform plans, and the importance of freedom of choice in health care for the public.

Bon said that after her brief contact with the President, one of his aids told her, "Don't be surprised if you see a picture of him in the newspaper, wearing your college sweatshirt while jogging!"

CCE Names Dr. Hagen President Emeritus In a resolution enacted on January 23, 1993, the Council on Chiropractic Education named Dr. Hagen President Emeritus of the CCE. She served as President of the Council from 1986-1988.

The resolution, written by the CCE Board of Directors, cited Dr. Hagen's outstanding record of administrative accomplishments as Council President. The resolution noted that she " . . . moved the organization to new and significant heights in such areas as revisions to the CCE Standards for Chiropractic Institutions, establishment of standards for paraprofession al programs, and . . . Dr. Hagen has dedicated over 50 years to both chiropractic and chiropractic education/accreditation and . . . other facets of chiropractic too n umerous to list at this time."

The CCE is recognized as an educational accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Ed ucation .

The Council has existed since 1971, and Dr. Hagen was the first woman to serve as its President.

Work-Out Center Planned Dr. Ralph Filson, Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science, is coordinating efforts to develop a work-out facility for students on the Logan campus. The work-out room is to be located in the lower level of the Science, Research, and Ergonomics Center. Dr. Filson is seeking financial contributions to the Work-Out Center as well as equipment donations. Olympicstyle weightlifting equipment is desired.

William Kessler, D.C. '54, of Auburn, Ill. Dr. Kessler was selected as the 1992 International Chiropractor of the Year by the Sacro Occipital Research Society International (SORSI). Dr. Kessler serves as Vice President of the SOT Division of SORSI. He has taught Sacro Occipital Technique as a visitor at several chiropractic colleges.

Kenneth J. Laux, D.C. '63, who has been named a Fellow of the American College of Chiropractors. Dr. Laux practices in Oceanside, N.Y. A Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists, Dr. Laux served for many years on the New York State Chiropractic Association Legislative Committee. Gov. Engler, a Democrat, is the successor of Republican Governor James Blanchard, who initially appointed Dr. Gregg to the position.

It is unusual for a governor to reappoint an individual who served under a predecessor of another party.

Dr. Gregg practices in Garden City, Mich., and serves as Chief of Chiropractic Services at New Center Hospital in Detroit.

James Lehman, D.C. '72, of Albuquerque, N.M., who has been named a Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists.

Dr. Lehman is a member of the Board of Directors of the Logan Alumni Association .

G. Michael Whitehead, D.C. '79, Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Diagnosis at

Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Kansas City, Mo. In 1992, Dr. Whitehead was named a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology, and also received the Foot Levelers Teaching Excellence Award at Cleveland's Homecoming.

He had received the award the previous year as well. Dr. Whitehead maintains an x-ray consultation service in Lee's Summit, Mo., and he is an active author - his articles have appeared in suc h publications as Roentgen Briefs and the ACA Journal of Chiropractic.

Mark A. Kellough, D.C. '79, of Lincoln, Neb., who was appointed

by Gov. Ben Nelson to the Nebraska State Board of Health . The 15member Board is made up of licensed health care providers and two lay members, and serves in an advisory capacity to the Di rector of the State Department of Health. Mary Anderson, D.C. '82, who was the subject of a feature story in the December '92 issue of the California Chiropractic Association journal. In the article, Dr. Anderson

discusses her experiences with a program for fourth-year medical students of the University of California-San Diego Medical School. In 1989 and 1990, Dr. Anderson hosted 31 medical students. Each student spent at least one day in her office in Soquel, Calif., observing procedures and learning about chiropractic care, as part of a family medicine clerkship. The chiropractic observation component of the clerkship was arranged by Ellen Beck, M.D., a faculty member of the Medical School.

Donald Wegener, D.C. '82, who has been named a Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. Dr. Wegener practices in Powell, Tenn.

Peter Viteritti, D.C. '83, of Northboro, Mass., who was the 1992 "Sports Chiropractor of the Year" of the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness. Chuck Vallee, D.C., and Lisa Sipp Vallee, D.C., both 1991 graduates, on their marriage to each other on Sept. 12, 1992. The Ors. Vallee are practicing in Utica, N.Y. Tracy Howard, D.C. '92, of Lonoke, Ark., and her husband, David, on the birth of a daughter, Kayla Danielle, on Oct. 8, 1992.

Farewells ••• On November 11, 1992, J. Kenneth McMahon, D.C. '40, died after a long bout with cancer. Dr. McMahon practiced in St. Louis for 24 years, and is remembered for his personal devotion to the Logan community. He and his wife, Annalee, traveled with members of the Logan College basketball team, which competed during the 1970's.

The McMahons kept in touch with some of the basketball players.

In recent years, health problems prevented Mrs. McMahon from attending Logan functions, but Dr. McMahon continued to be a regular at College events. He also

assisted Dr. Vi Nickson in her work in the Logan Archives.

A memorial fund has been established in Dr. McMahon's name by the Missouri State Chirop ractors Association. All contributions to the fund are designated for the MSCA building fund. Memorial con t ributions may be sent to: MSCA, 220 E. Dunklin, Jefferson City, Mo. 65101 .

Also, we offer our condolences to the family members and friends of the following doctors: Bartlett Simms, D.C., a 1939 graduate of Missouri Chiropractic College. Dr. Simms passed away on August 27, 1992. He had practiced in St. Louis for 50 years and retired in 1989.

Walter W. Breithaupt, D.C., of Kansas City, Mo., a 1941 Logan graduate. Dr. Breithaupt died August 11, 1992.

Geneice Edwards, D.C. '41, (Missouri), who passed away Sept. 24, 1992. Dr. Edwards practiced in North St. Louis County and had retired in 1986.

John Edstrom, D.C. '50, of St. Louis. Dr. Edstrom passed away Dec. 9. He was the father of Gregory Edstrom, D.C. '73, and the father-inlaw of Lee Shaffer, D.C. '75.

Paul Reesor, D.C. '52, of St. Charles, Mo., who passed away in mid-December.

Raymond Filson, D.C. '53, (Missouri), who died on Oct. 25, 1992.

Dr. Filson practiced in St. Louis from 1953-1973, and in Warrenton and Wright City, Mo. from 1973-1989, and he was the father of Ralph Filson, D.C. '69.

Dr. Ralph Filson is Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science at Logan College, Treasurer and a past President of the Logan Alumni Association, and Vice President of the ACA Council on Technic. The Filson family has asked that any contributions in memory of Dr. Raymond take the form of donations to the Logan College Student Workout Center (see article on page 8).

Logan Employee Becomes Alumni Director The Logan Alumni Association named Ivy Hill as its new Director on February 6. Hill succeeds Sharon Kehrer, now Director of Administrative Affairs at Logan College. (See article on page 21).

A Logan employee for the past two years, Hill joined the College staff as Secretary to Student Health Services. In February 1992, she was promoted to Secretary/ Assistant in the Personnel/Security Department.

She previously held secretarial positions at St. Anthony's Medical Center in South St. Louis County and at the Moneta Group, Inc., an insurance brokerage located in Clayton, Mo. Hill is a part-time student at St. Louis Community College at Meramec, and she plans to transfer to a four-year degree program in business management.

Commenting on the appointment, Dr. Anthony Bilott, President of the Logan Alumni Association, said: "We are pleased to announce the selection of Ivy Hill as our new Director, and we look forward to working with her."

Doyle Family Recognized at Graduation The family of Dr. Bill Doyle '64 of Jacksonville, Ill., was recognized during the December 19, 1992 commencement, when his youngest son, Dr. Edwin S. Doyle, received the Doctor of Chiropractic degree.

Three of the other four Doyle children are chiropractors who graduated from Logan.

Dr. Bill Doyle, his other two sons, and his daughter Dr. Dennis Doyle '80 of Jacksonville, Dr. Kelly Doyle '83 of Fresno, Cal., and Dr. Anna Doyle '91 of Elmhurst, Ill. joined Dr. Edwin on the stage following his academic hooding.

nized the Doyle family members and thanked them for their dedication to Logan College.

In 1991, Dr. Bill Doyle initiated a scholarship fund at Logan in his family's name, intending to build a substantial enough account within a few years to support $500 scholarship awards to Logan students. At the time, Dr. Doyle noted: "I've encouraged my children to continue our family's commitment to helping the College as much as they can. My son, Dr. Kelly, and two of his classmates, Drs. Eric Tryggestad and Kevin Steen, contributed $10,000 each to help with renovation of the California Room ."

Dr. Deane C. Gulley o f Benton , Ill., who passed away abo ut a year ago, left a generous bequest to Logan College. The College adm inistration recently received a check fo r $20,000 from Dr. Gulley's estate as a year-end partial di stributio n .

Add itional funds from the estate are expected to be received later th is year.

The Foundation fo r Chiropractic Education and Research also is a beneficiary of Dr. Gulley's estate.

Dr. Gulley gradua ted fro m Missouri Chiropracti c College i n 1941 . He served in Wo rl d Wa r II as an x-ray techn icia n, and established his practice in Ben ton after the war, according to another Benton chirop racto r, Dr. Joe Zinzilieta .

Missouri Chiropracti c College merged with Logan College in 1964 and Missouri alumn i became part of the Logan family at that time. " We were unaware of Dr. Gulley's bequest prior to his death, and so, unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to thank him for his generosi ty," said Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman . " However, we deeply admire the comm itment to the future of chiropract ic that he demonstrated by providing bequests to Logan College and the FCER. "

Alumnus Helps Develop Natural Bodybuilding Competition The October 1992 issue of Natural Physique, a magazine for bodybuilders committed to drug-free training and competition, recognized Dr. George Chirkinian '78 of Richmond, Va. for his role in bringing about the first Pro Natural American Chiro Cup competition .

The article referred to the event, held June 20, 1992 in Spartanburg, S.C., as Dr. Chirkinian's " brainchild", while observing that the efforts of many chiropractors helped make the competition a reality.

The Chiro Cup was a qualifying event for the Pro Natural World Competition. Forty-three bodybuilders competed in the event, while Dr. Chirkinian and four other doctors made chiropractic care available.

Dr. Chirkinian ¡is President of the Southeastern Chiropractic Federation, one of the sponsors of the event. The ACA Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness also sponsored the Chiro Cup, as did

Dr. Chirkinian said the competition was the first professional contest to include chiropractic in its name. He added that chiropractic organizations have supported drugfree body-building competitions for several years, reflecting the profession's anti-steroid position.

Dr. Chirkinian said that while 50% of the revenue from sales of the tape will cover production costs, the remaining 50% will be used to fund the 1993 Pro Natural American Chiro Cu p. Health Centers Open New Facilities The Logan College Health Centers opened two new facilities on January 25, in the St. Louis suburbs of Webster Groves and St. Charles. The College also continues to provide outpatient care at the on-campus Montgomery Health Center and at the Logan College Community Health Center in South St. Louis.

The College closed its Dellwood Health Center in December.

Last year, the Logan administration retained QED Consulting Group, a St. Louis firm, to make a detailed management analysis of the Health Centers. The changes were planned in response to QED's recommendations.

Dr. Ronald Grant, Director of Clinical Services, said that the changes were implemented in order to ensure that Logan students continue to meet the clinical requirements necessary for graduation from the College.

The process of equipping the two new Health Centers began with the purchase of a new Bennett High Frequency x-ray generator, which has been installed in the St. Charles Center. The state-of-the-art machine, Bennett's Model 300SE, requires only 110 volts and thus can utilize ordinary electrical current.

The x-ray unit which was housed in the former Dellwood Center was moved to the Webster Groves Center.

Health Care Manufacturing donated a stationary drop table which is being used at the Webster Groves Center. Additionally, Williams Manufacturing has placed ten Zenith stationary tables at Logan on consignment. These tables have been installed in a classroom, replacing tables which have been moved to the two new Health Centers.

individuals.

Local newspapers in St. Charles and two nearby suburbs carried an article about the St. Charles Logan Health Center. Webster Groves-area newspapers also printed a preopening photograph of the Webster Center and announcements of its opening. The February issue of the Medical Business Journal of St. Louis also carried a lengthy article on the Health Center openings.

Several radio interviews with Logan representatives helped educate the public about chiropractic and bring attention to the two new Health Centers. Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman was interviewed live on January 25 on "The Morning Meeting", a popular talk show on CBS-owned KMOX, long the dominant radio station in St. Louis. Dr. Goodman and program hosts Charles Brennan and Kevin Horrigan discussed the relationship of chiropractic with other health professions, habits which lead to back problems, and problems resulting from the use of furniture not meeting ergonomic standards.

Dr. Grant was interviewed by talkshow hosts of stations KFXB-FM, WIL-FM, and KLOU-FM. Dr. Grant's lengthy interview on KLOU-FM, also with Charles Brennan, included in-depth discussion of the education of chiropractic physicians, requirements for admission to Logan, chiropractic sports injury care, acupuncture as a postdoctoral specialization pursued by some chiropractors, and the similarity of the diagnostic procedures and technologies utilized by Doctors of Chiropractic and allopathic physicians.

Health Center Faculty Reassignments and Appointments In conjunction with the openings of the two new Health Centers, Dr. Grant announced several faculty reassignments. Dr. Kelly Brinkman , previously a clinician at the oncampus Montgomery Health Center, is the Director of the new Health Center in St. Charles. Dr. William Hemmer, formerly the Director of Logan's Community Health Center in South St. Louis, is the Director of the new Health Center in Webster Groves. Dr. Scott Hainz, formerly a clinician at the Montgomery Health Center, has been appointed Director of the Community Health Center. Dr. John Kiernan, who was the Director of the Dellwood Health Center, is now a full-time clinician at Montgomery Health Center.

In addition, two other reassign ments of Health Center faculty members, which were implemented

early last fall, have enabled the College to initiate and expand programs benefitti ng Logan students.

Dr. Kathleen Naughton, formerly Assistant Director of Clinical Services, is now Assistant Director of Clinical Assessment and Clinical Education. Dr. Naughton ' s new duties include the development of the Logan College Clinical Assessment Center. At the Center, Logan interns videotape themselves as they practice hi story taking , regional exams, and adjustive procedures on fellow students. The Assessment Center provides a new teaching method for the Health Centers and new opportunities for interns to receive feedback on their skills.

Dr. Naughton also coordinates the preparation of Logan students for competency board examinations and administers the examinations.

Student Loan Rehabilitation Program Announced A new student loan rehabilitation program began recently. The program, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Education , resulted from a recent federal legislative re-authorization of the Higher Education Act. "The loan rehabilitation program is available to anyone who has defaulted on repayment of federal Stafford, Supplemental (SLS), or consolidated loans. The borrower must make 12 consecutive payments on the loan. After these payments are made, the loan will no longer be considered in default, and the borrower will continue to make payments on a regular schedule until the loan is fully repaid," said Logan Financial Aid Director Jean Short.

Only a small percentage of Logan graduates have had their chiropractic educational loans placed in

default. However, Short emphasized Logan 's commitment to reporting all available information, and assisting alumni in this area as much as possible. She said that borrowers should contact their own loan servicers for details on the loan rehabilitation program. " This program is the first to provide an opportunity to move a loan out of default status. In the past, once a loan was placed in default, the borrower could do nothing to change its status," said Short. "In some cases, people had simply moved and were not contacted by their loan servicers for three or four months, and by that time, their loans were placed in default. In other cases, people's circumstances have changed since their loans were declared in default, and now they will be able to rectify their loan situations."

These duties formerly were managed by Dr. Marianne Gen ge nbach , who left the College last su mmer and is now practicing in Flo rida. Dr. Gengenbach continues to serve on the College's postgraduate fac ulty.

Dr. Doris Bell, formerly Director of Student Health Services, is now devoting her time to a new position at the College, involving the coordination of Logan's expanding mu lticultural student services.

Dr. Bell's former responsibilities are held by Dr. Henry D. Ni colaides, Assistant Director of Clinical Services and Student Hea lth Se rvi ces.

Dr. Nicolaides joined the Health Center faculty last fall. He received his chiropractic degree fro m Texas Chiropractic College in 1985. He has a B.S. degree in Communications from Southern Illinois UniversityCarbondale.

Following his graduati on from TCC, Dr. Nicolaides practi ced in Pasadena, Tex. , where hi s alma mater is located, and jo ined the TCC faculty. He served as a cl inical instructor, and as Chief of Staff at the TCC Outpatient Clinic.

Governmental Leaders Visit College In recent months two political leaders visited the Logan campus.

Both visited Logan to gather information on chiropractic's role in health care and chiropractic education . In November, U.S. Rep. James Slattery of the Second Congressional District in Kansas was a visitor, accompanied by Steve Dickson, attorney for the Kansas Chiropractic Association. The Kansas representative serves on several congressional committees that will be involved in the writing of major health care legislation.

The Honorable Jay Nixon, newly inaugurated Attorney General for the State of Missouri, visited the Logan campus in December.

Logan Takes Top Honors at '92 Chiropractic Games About 400 students from seven chiropractic colleges visited the Logan campus October 8-10 for the first Chiropractic Games, a U.S./ Canadian multi-sport athletic competition. Organized competition was held in basketball, golf, soccer, softball, and volleyball, with each college able to enter up to two teams in each sport. The colleges were asked to enter coeducational teams in the volleyball and softball competitions, while all-male or allfemale teams could be entered in the other sports. Events were held on campus and at local athletic facilities.

In addition to Logan College, the following colleges entered teams in the Games: Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (Toronto, Canada); Parker College of Chiropractic (Dallas, Texas); Texas Chiropractic College (Pasadena, Tex.); Northwestern College of Chiropractic (Bloomington, Minn.); Life College (Marietta, Ga.); National College of Chiropractic (Lombard, Ill.) , and Palmer College of Chiropractic (Davenport, la.).

The overall trophy was won by Logan, in a close race w ith Palmer College. The two colleges had point totals of 34 and 30, respectively. The winning team in each sport earned ten points, with six to the secondplace team, and four to the third.

Teams from Palmer took first

place in three sports : volleyball , basketball, and golf. Logan won in soccer, and Parker College was the winner in softball. Logan increased its total points by taking second place in volleyball and third place in basketball and golf. Additionally, the two Logan softball teams finished second and third.

In addition to the competitive sports, various recreational sports were included in the weekend schedule, and Games attendees also enjoyed a dance and an awards ceremony.

The Games were coordinated by the Logan chapter of Delta Sigma Chi, national professional chiropractic fraternity. The Logan chapters of Student ACA and Chi Rho Sigma Fraternity coordinated the recreational events, while the Logan chapters of Pi Kappa Chi Fraternity and Omega Sigma Phi Sorority coordinated the dance and the awards ceremony.

Karm Virk and Dave Shapiro of Delta Sigma Chi, two of the organizers of the Games, were guests October 7 on radio station KASP an all-sports station which broadcast in St. Louis until recently. Virk and Shapiro discussed the Games, the chiropractic colleges attending, etc. with host Rick Wallace. Several of the St. Louis area Suburban journals also carried an article about the Chiropractic Games. The article

Students Attend WCCS Conference Six Logan students served as delegates to the 1992 World Congress of Chiropractic Students, held September 21-25 at New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Chiropractic students throughout the world automatically become members of wees upon enrolling at any chiropractic college. The '92 WCCS conference featured noted speakers Mark Goodin , the American Chiropractic Association ' s legislative strategist, and Dr. Maridel Gatterman, author of the textbook , Chiropractic Management of Spine Related Disorders.

December '92 graduate Dr. Charles Weiss was the Head Delegate from Logan. Sandra Bon was Vice Chairperson of the conference, and she will be Chairperson of this year's conference, to be held at Logan College, October 3-8.

New Members Elected to Board of Trustees The Logan Board of Trustees elected two new members at its February 6 meeting, held in St. Louis. The Board also re-elected four members who had completed their prior terms, and elected two individuals to the Advisory Council of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Weldon L. Odom of Riverdale, Ga. and Dr. Elizabeth A. Parrott of Mayfield, Ky. are the new Trustees.

Dr. Odom graduated from Logan College in 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1959, and established a chiropractic practice in Atlanta in 1959. Dr. Odom has held numerous leadership positions in the ACA, including President of the Association (1985-1987); Vice President of the Association ; President and Vice President of the ACA Council of Delegates; President of the ACA Council on Mental Health; President of the ACA Council of Diagnostic Imaging, and Chairman of the ACA Awards Committee.

Dr. Odom was named a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors in 1972. He served from 1978-1988 as an accreditation inspection team member of the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education, and he presently serves as a member of the Board of Examiners of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology. Dr. Odom also is a Past President of the Greenbriar Kiwanis Club and an ordained Deacon in the Baptist Church.

Dr. Parrott received the Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1980 from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Mo. She also has a B.A. in Health Care Administration from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas.

Dr. Parrott has practiced in Mayfield since graduating from Cleveland.

A Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors, Dr. Parrott has served as a delegate from Kentucky to the American Chiropractic Association, and has chaired the Industrial Relations and Student ACA committees of the Association.

She also is a Past President of the Council of Women Chiropractors of the ACA. Dr. Parrott has received two presidential distinguished service awards from the ACA (1983 and

1989).

Dr. Parrott holds a number of community leadership positions.

She is the President of the Mayfield/ Graves County United Way; Vice Chairman of the Mayfield/Graves County Child Advocacy Board; Legislative Chairman of the Child Victim's Trust Fund of the Attorney General of Kentucky, and a member of the Board of Directors of Cumberland Federal Savings Bank.

Re-elected to three-year terms as a Board member and as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees was Dr. Ronald L. Harris of Ocala, Fla. Dr. Robert Matrisciano of S. Ozone Park, N.Y. was re-elected to a threeyear term as a member of the Board.

Dr. Howard Chapel of Chesterfield was re-elected Faculty Representative to the Board, and Dr. Larry Steele of Bloomington, Ind. was reelected as Alumni Representative to the Board both for two-year terms.

Dr. Edward Glover of Peoria, Ill., who had served on the Board for nine years, the maximum number of consecutive years allowed, was elected to the Advisory Council of the Board.

Dr. Arthur L. McAuliffe of Columbia, Ill. also was elected to the Advisory Council of the Board of Trustees. Dr. McAuliffe graduated Cum Laude from Missouri Chiropractic College in 1953, and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1953-1955. He is a past member of the President's Cabinet International of National College of Chiropractic, and a Past President of the St. Clair County (Ill .) Chiropractic Association.

Dr. McAuliffe has completed extensive postgraduate study in roentgenology at Logan College. He obtained Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic

Orthopedists after completing postgraduate course work in orthopedics at National College. Dr. McAuliffe has served as a Board member of the Monroe County American Red Cross and of the Columbia Gymnastic Association, and as a nominating committee member of the Missouri Athletic Club.

Last fall, Dr. John Danchik of Belmont, Mass. resigned from the Board of Trustees. Dr. Danchik said that while he had enjoyed his service on the Board, he missed postgraduate teaching in sports injury care , his specialty. He resigned from the Board in order to re-join the Logan Postgraduate Department as an instructor. Bylaws of the Board of Trustees prohibit any individual from serving on the Board and as a Logan Postgraduate Department instructor simultaneously.

Board of Trustees Actions, February 6 During the Feb. 6 meeting of the Board of Trustees, the College finances and financial policies were reviewed . In addition, the Board: • Approved a 6% tuition increase, effective September 1993 • Commissioned a study, to be conducted by the Logan administration, on promotion of the Logan Ergonomics Center •Voted to support feasibility studies for a postdoctoral school of acupuncture on the Logan campus, and for an independent Bachelor of Science degree program. (The College's current B.S. in Human Biology degree is available only to Logan students enrolled in the Doctor of Chiropractic degree program, who have completed specific academic requirements prior to enrolling at Logan.)

• Approved the recently revised Logan College Faculty Handbook • Named the officers of the College as a corporate entity: President - Dr. George A. Goodman; Vice President - Dr. William Ramsey; Treasurer - Gary Gross; Secretary - Sharon Kehrer.

The next Board meeting will be on June 16 in St. Louis.

Kehrer, Gross Named Directors of Administrative, Business Affairs

Sharon Kehrer, formerly Executive Director of the Logan Alumni Association, has been appointed Director of Administrative Affairs for the College. She is supervising staff personnel, placement, computer operations, general support services, and public relations, and serving as a liaison with Logan alumni and the College Development Office.

Kehrer joined the Logan staff in 1973 and became Executive Director of the Alumni Association in 1981.

She received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Columbia College in Columbia, Mo., and will soon complete requirements for a Master of Business Administration degree from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo. Some of the administrative functions now overseen by Kehrer previously were supervised by Gary Gross, who joined the College as Director of Administrative Affairs in 1988. Gross, whose position also entailed financial management duties, has been appointed to the new position of Director of Business Affairs.

In announcing the two new

appointments, Logan President Dr. George Goodman said th at t he new arrangement of duties w ill allow Gross to devote all of his ti me to the College's financial matters, helping to ensure the long-term fi nancial stability of the College. Gross is managing the College budget, financial planning and forecasting, and the reporting of financial information to the College administration and to the financial committee of the Board of Trustees. He also is supervising the College accounting system, payroll, internal and external audits, accounts payable, insurance, and short-term investing.

He also serves as Head Coach of the Logan Hockey Club.

Gross has a bachelor's degree in commerce from St. Louis University and a master's degree from Webster University in Webster Groves, Mo. He previously taught business courses in the St. Louis Public Schools and served as an internal auditor, computer audit specialist, and assistant comptroller for General Bancshares, County National Bank, and Landmark Bancshares.

Logan Represented at Career Conference for Young Women Kathleen Naughton , D.C., Assistant Directo r of Clinical Assessment a,nd CWnical Education , and Ruth Birch , Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Basic Science, served as pand ists at the 1993 Expanding Your Horizons in Mathematics and Science Conference, held March 9 at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. The conference was sponsored by the Math/ Science Network of Greater St. Louis, a group of St. Louis-area women . The Math / Science Network promotes the participation of women in mathemat ics, science, and non-traditional occupations.

The Expanding Your Horizons conference was attended by nearly 1,300 female }unior high and high school students, representing more than 50 high schools in Eastern Missouri and Illinois. About 140 professional women who apply knowledge of science and/ or mathematics in their work served as panelists during the conference. They discussed their professions, their educational backgrounds, and their career experiences. Each panelist spoke during three panel sessions, with about 20 students in attendance at each.

Logan College and St. Louis Airport Marriott Hotel Speakers: Frederick R. Carrick, D.C., of St. Cloud, Fla., is a graduate of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. He has Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Academy of Neurology and with the American College of Chiropractic Neurology. He was the American College of Chiropractic Neurology "Chiropractor of the Year" for 1988.

Dr. Carrick is Director of Neurology for the Epsom Foundation, which has offices in Orlando, Fla ., East Islip, N.Y., and Epsom, N.H. He also is the primary neurology instructor of the Logan Postgraduate Department. He has published articles in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, and has lectured extensively throughout the U.S.

Robert Hacker, D.C, is a 1978 Logan graduate who has Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Board of Radio Io g y. He is President of Radiographic Consultation Services of Knoxville, Tenn. Dr. Hacker received a bachelor's degree from the City University of New York at Queens College, and completed

a radiologic residency at National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill. Since 1981, Dr. Hacker has served as Chairman of the Council on Radiology of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association. In 1988, he served as Secretary of the Radiologic Health Section of the American Public Health Association. In 1992, he was elected Vice President of the ACA Council on Diagnostic Imaging.

Dr. Hacker has authored numerous articles which have appeared in such publications as Roentgen Briefs and the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. He is the Managing Editor of Topics in Diagnostic Radiology and Advanced Imaging.

William D. Esteb is a marketing communications specialist who has worked in radio, television, and advertising. A chiropractic patient and advocate, Esteb has written and produced patient education videos. He wrote the scripts for the Renaissance International patient education videos starring Peter Graves, Russell Erhardt, D.C., Jane Kennedy, and others. He is the author of What Every Chiropractic Assistant Should Know and A Patient's Point of View. The latter book explores the doctor/chiropractic patient relationship .

As consultant for chiropractic marketing and office management, Esteb has developed seminars for chiropractors, emphasizing patient-centered proce-

dures and patient education as the ke ys to success in practice.

Craig Scarpelli, D.C., is a 1990 Logan graduate who practices in Newton, Penn. He serves as Vice President of the Bucks County Chiropractic Society and is active in youth soccer coaching.

Dr. Scarpelli is a former professional soccer goalkeeper.

His soccer career in _ the early 1980's included stints with the St. Louis Steamers, the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, and the Minnesota Strikers. He also has worked as a muscle testing technician. Dr. Scarpelli received a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology degree from Logan College, and was certified in acupuncture through the Logan Postgraduate Department.

Russell A. Leonard is Executive Director of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association. He is the chiropractic profession's liaison to the Workers Compensation Advisory Committee for the State of Wisconsin, which has successfully promoted the passage of workers' compensation laws that are fair to chiropractic.

Leonard also helped develop and worked for the passage of statutes

THE TOWER/WINTER 1993 protecting the rights of Wisconsin chiropractic patients under managed health care programs . He has researched and taught a series of educational programs emphasizing business skills for chiropractors.

Leonard received a bachelors degree, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has a Master of Business Administration degree from Marquette University. He has worked extensively in corporate management and financial administration in the houseware retailing, food service equipment, management services, and data processing industries.

Daniel J. Murphy, D.C., practices in Pleasanton, Cal. A Fellow of the American Board of Or¡ thopedists, he has managed and treated approximately 3,500 spinal trauma cases.

Dr. Murphy is a 1987 graduate, Magna Cum Laude, of Western States Chiropractic College, and he serves on the faculty of Life Chiropractic College-West. He has extensive experience as a postgraduate instructor in the areas of spinal trauma and athletic injuries. He holds postgraduate faculty appointments at five chiropractic colleges, including Logan College. He was the International Chiropractors Association " Postgraduate Instructor of the Year" for 1987 and 1991. Dr. Murphy has spoken at numerous state chiropractic conventions and at conventions of the ICA and the American Chiropractic Association. He was a speaker at Logan's 1992 Homecoming.

David Seaman, D.C, is a New York Chiropractic College graduate (1986).

He completed postdoctoral course work in neurology through the Logan Postgraduate Department, in which he now holds a faculty appointment. Dr. Seaman holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Neurologists and with the American College of Chiropractic Neurology.

Dr. Seaman received a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey and a Master of Science

PAGE 31 in Nutrition degree from the University of Bridgeport. He was certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association . In 1992, he became Director of the Council on Nutrition of the American Chiropractic Association.

Robert P. Sherman, Esq. is an attorney who served as Executive Director of the Ohio State Chiropractic Association from 1984-1990. He is the co-author of Risk Management in Chir op r act i c : Developing Malpractice Prevention Strategies.

Sherman serves as General Counsel to the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, which commissioned the 1991 Mercy Conference on practice guidelines. He co-authored the book Chiropractic Forms and Sample Letters, which offers forms and letters for doctors which are consistent with the recommendations of the Mercy Conference.

A 1976 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Law, Sherman previously was Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio, representing state agencies, including the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

He serves on the Logan Postgraduate Department faculty, and he holds a postgraduate faculty appointment at National College of Chiropractic. He writes and edits the Chiropractic Legal Update, a national bi-monthly newsletter.

Greg Stanley, a 1992 Logan Homecoming speaker, is returning to lecture this year. He is President of Whitehall Management Services, Inc., of Phoenix, Ariz. The company has more than a decade of experience in presenting investment and practice develop- , ment seminars throughout the U.S. More than 15,000 doctors have attended Whitehall seminars.

Stanley graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He has written numerous articles on personal and business finance and developed educational videos on these topics as well.

Terry R. Yochum, D.C., is one of the chiropractic profession ' s most renowned radiologists.

Dr . Yochum holds Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology, and he is a Past President of the Board . He is Director of the Rocky Mountain Chiropractic Radiological Center in Denver, Colo. He serves as Adjunct Professor of Radiology at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and as Clinical Instructor in Skeletal Radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine . The radiology residents at the medical school named Dr. Yochum "Teacher of the Yea r" for 1991.

A Cum Laude graduate o f National College of Chiropractic (1972) , Dr. Yochum was Chairperson of t he Logan Radiology Department from 1976-1978.

He later developed the Radiology Department of the Phillip Institute of Technology School of Chiropractic in Australia.

Dr. Yochum's publications in clude the comprehensive textbook, Esse ntials of Skeletal Radiology, whi ch h e coauthored . He has given seve ral hundred lectures on radiologic topics in t he U.S. and abroad .

Gordon A. Ireland, Pharm.D., is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Science at Logan College, and an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

He also provides consultation and training services in clinical pharmacy for St. Louis-area hospitals.

Dr. Ireland received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of Maryland-Baltimore School of Pharmacy. He received the Pharm.D. degree from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. He studied for one year at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Ireland previously taught at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. He has published numerous articles in pharmaceutical and clinical chemistry journals, and edited the Handbook of Pharmacokinetic Data of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.

After careful study of the overall operations of our Alumni Office and reviewing the many programs offered to our members, the Budget and Finance Committee recommended to the Board of Directors at the February 6, 1993 board meeting that we increase our annual membership dues.

The Budget and Finance Committee demonstrated the increase in cost o( goods and services over the years since our last dues increase in 1985. The committee recommended that dues be increased from $100 to $150 annually.

Your board of directors unanimously voted in favor of presenting this proposed increase to the membership during the general business meeting on Friday, June 18, at the St. Louis Marriott Airport Hotel. We look forward to seeing you there.

Dr. Allen Parry

Allen Parry, D.C., Director of Postdoctoral and Related Professional Education, has been promoted to Dean of Postdoctoral and Related Professional Education.

Dr. Parry previously practiced in Dearborn, Mich., after graduating from Logan in 1973. In 1984, he became a full-time faculty member at Logan. In addition to supervising Logan's postdoctoral programs, Dr. Parry teaches Cox Technique in the Chiropractic Science Division. He serves as faculty adviser to the Logan Student ACA, and he will be the College's representative on the national committee for chiropractic's 100th anniversary.

Kettner, D.C., DACBR as a Fellow of the College. Dr. Kettner is Associate Professor of Clinical Science at Logan College and Chairperson of the Radiology Department. A 1980 Logan graduate, Dr. Kettner's numerous publications include analytical articles, case studies, and case management guides, which have been published in such journals as D. C. Tracts, Applied Diagnostic Imaging, ACA Journal of Chiropractic, Chiropractic Sports Medicine, and the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

Dr. Kettner is chairperson of the Missouri State Chiropractors Association Practice Guidelines Committee and is a member of the MSCA Hospital Relations Committee.

Dr. Kettner was elected President of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology in 1991, and was re-elected President during the 1992 ACCR symposium in Dallas.

During the 1992 ACCR symposium, Inger Roug, D.C., Resident in Radiology at Logan, gave a case presentation demonstrating the value of skeletal scintigraphy in diagnosing neuromusculoskeletal problems.

D. Robert Kuhn, D.C., Instructor of Chiropractic and Clinical Science, and Michael Barry, D.C., Resident in Radiology, have been named Diplomates of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology. The two faculty members completed postgraduate study, needed to qualify for Diplomate status, in the Logan College Department of Radiology.

Gary E. Sanders, Ph.D., and Deborah A. Lawson, D.C., co-authored an article which was published in the July/ August issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Dr. Sanders is Director

of Research and Dr. Lawson is a Research Associate and also is

studying for a Ph.D. degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Their article is titled "Stability of Paraspinal Tissue Compliance in Normal Subjects", and reports on studies performed to evaluate the stability of paraspinal tissue compliance measurements. Tissue comp Ii an ce is a measure of the consistency or firmness of soft tissue and is determined by a hand-held tissue compliance meter. The findings tend to support the utility of tissue compliance as a .possible tool for the evaluation of paraspinal soft tissue.

Jerry Carpenter, D.C., Instructor of Chiropractic Science, received the Eagle Award from Activator Methods, Inc. The award was presented to Dr. Carpenter by Dr. Arlan Fuhr, President of Activator Methods, at the 1992 Activato r Methods Instructors Se m i n ar in Phoenix. The Eagle Award is given for outstanding achieveme nts and service. Dr. Carpenter has taught Activator Methods at Logan for eight years.

Joseph Unger, D.C., Instructor of Chiropractic Science, was elected to his fifth term as Chairman of the Board of the Sacro Occipital Research Society International, Inc. Dr. Unger was re-elected Chairman during SORSl's 1992 annual conference in Omaha.

Dr. Unger also taught advanced Sacro Occipital Technique in Japan at the annual conference of the Pacific Asian Association of Chiropractic in November. He returned to Japan to teach two seminars on neurophysiology and chiropractic in relation to visceral dysfunction, and cranial manipulation - in March. He also assisted in organizing chiropractic research efforts by the doctors in Japan, and he plans to return to Japan in July to teach a seminar on advanced cranial manipulation.
