Trustees Elect New Chairperson The Logan College Board of Trustees elected Dr. Ronald Harris of Ocala, Fla. as Chairperson during the Board's meeting on February 910. Dr. Harris succeeds Dr. Gordon Toftness, who retired as Chairperson after serving since 1980.

Dr. Harris, a native of Granite City, Ill., graduated from Logan in 1966, and practices in Ocala. ¡He served two terms as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Chiropractic Association and was Executive Vice President of the ACA from 1987-1989. He also served as Chairman of the Florida Bdard of Examiners. Dr. Harris was a member of the Logan Board of Trustees in 1978-1979 and 1986, before beginning his present term on the Board in 1990.

Dr. Harris is a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors, and is a past president of the Florida Chiropractic Association and the Dade County Chiropractic Society in Florida.

Dr. Gerald Kari of Forest Lake, Minn. was elected Vice Chairperson of the Board. Dr. Kari, a 1963 Logan graduate, heads the Kari Family Clinic of Chiropractic, the largest chiropractic facility in Minnesota.

He is a past president of the Minnesota Chiropractic Association, and was its Chiropractor of the Year in 1973. Dr. Kari previously served as President of Logan's National Alumni Board, and has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1989.

The Board also inducted three new members: Dr. John Danchik, Dr. Arden Fenander, and Mr. Stewart Smith. All had served on the Advisory Council of the Board of Trustees since 1990.

Dr. Danchik, a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, graduated from Logan in 1977 and practices in Belmont, Mass. A nationally recognized expert on sports injuries, he served as President of the ACA Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, and as co-chair of the Chiropractic Physician Selection Committee for the U.S. Olympic Committee. Dr. Danchik served on the faculty of the Logan Postgraduate Division until shortly before his election to the Board.

Dr. Fenander, a 1959 Logan graduate, is a past president of the Logan College Alumni Association and was the alumni representative to the Board of Trustees during 1979-1980.

He has served as president and vicepresident of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association. He is vicepresident of the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research, and practices in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. Mr. Smith, a retired corporate executive and attorney, was employed by Union Electric Company in St. Louis. He served the company in several capacities, including general counsel, executive vice president, and vice chairman. Mr. Smith received his A.B. and his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He is the father of Dr. Stewart W. Smith Ill, a 1982 Logan graduate.

All Board members, except for the Alumni Representative and the Faculty Representative, serve threeyear terms, with the maximum length of service on the Board being nine years. Re-elected for threeyear terms were Virginia Brown, Ph.D., Peter Fediay, D.C., and E. L. Strotheide, D.C. The Alumni and the Faculty Representative to the Board serve for one year, and they must be reelected. The Board re-elected Dr. Larry Steele for a one-year term as Alumni Representative to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Steele, a 1964 graduate who practices in Bloomington, Ind., was president of the Logan College Alumni Association during 1986-1987. Dr. Steele is the Logan Alumnus of the Year for 1990.

Dr. George Parker has retired as Facultx Representative to the Board.

Faculty Council President, Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, reports that Dr. Parker's replacement will be announced later this year.

Faculty Honored at Awards Banquet The College's annual Faculty Awards Banquet, sponsored by the Board of Trustees, was held on Saturday evening, February 9, at the Stouffer's Concourse Hotel in North St. Louis County.

In advance of the banquet, the faculty selected, by a balloting process, three individuals who received awards for outstanding service.

The "Teaching Excellence Award", received by Dr. Bert Hanicke, Professor of Chiropractic Science, recognizes extraordinary ability to teach, good rapport with students, and effort in the area of professional development as a teacher.

The "Institutional or Professional Advancement Award", honoring achievement in the areas of research, community work, publication, professional presentations, etc., was received by Dr. Michael Taylor, Health Center Instructor.

The "Educational Services Award", received by Robert Snyders, Assistant Professor and Public Services/Reference Librarian, recognizes successful work with students in areas such as advising, academic/

Dr. Hagen Honored on 10th Anniversary of her Inauguration Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen was honored at a surprise reception held on February 8 at the College. Ten years ago on February 7, she was inaugurated as the fifth president of the College, and has since received national recognition for her leadership in chiropractic education. ¡ The reception was attended by Logan faculty, staff, and students.

Dr. Gordon Toftness, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Dr. George Goodman, Vice President of Chiropractic Affairs; and Dr. William Ramsey, Vice President of Academic Affairs offered comments on Dr. Hagen's tenure as President thus far.

They emphasized such developments as the funding and construction of the Science, Research, and Ergonomics Building, and the Col-

lege's accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. Hagen received a bouquet of red roses from Dr. Toftness, and a large crystal bowl from the College faculty, staff and students. She thanked those present for her gifts, and commented, "This was really a surprise, and I am very grateful. The last ten years have been a very interesting challenge, and, other than my family, Logan has been the top priority in my life.

"However, we could never have come as far as we have without the commitment of everyone the faculty, the Board of Trustees, our support staff, and our students, who must always receive the excellent education they deserve."

Doyle Scholarship Fund Instituted

Dr. Doyle presents a check for the Doyle Scholarship Fund to Dr. Hagen.

Dr. William Doyle '64 has begun a fund intended for future scholarship awards in his family's name. It is hoped that within a few years, initial awards can be made. "We'd like to begin by awarding $500 once a year, and eventually, award $500 every trimester,'' explains Dr. Doyle. "It will take a few years for the account to generate enough income that we can do this, but you have to start somewhere. In the meantime, it may be possible that we can use the fund to provide short-term loans for students with serious emergencies.

"I feel it is very important to help students finance their education, because I don't want to see chiropractic education become an option only for the wealthy.

"I also am committed to helping the College - all my kids heard while they were growing

up was 'Logan'! My daughter, Marie Elward, who recently graduated from law school, even named her baby girl Logan!"

(The baby was born December 5, 1989.)

Four of Dr. Doyle's children have followed him to the College: Drs. Dennis ('80) and Kelly ('83) Doyle, and students Anna (Trimester 10) and Edwin (Trimester 5) Doyle.

Dr. Doyle continues: "I've encouraged my children to continue our family's commitment to helping the College as much as they can. My son, Dr. Kelly, and two of his classmates, Drs. Eric Tryggestad and Kevin Steen, contributed $10,000 each to help with renovation of the California Room."

Criteria for the Doyle Scholarship will not be established until the fund is ready to begin offering awards.

Dennis Rodden, D.C. '80, who gave a seminar on SOAP notes and other aspects of record-keeping for the Missouri Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Dr. Rodden is a nationally known speaker, has published numerous articles and tapes, and has worked with the Missouri Board of Chiropractic Examiners on many occasions as an examiner, researcher, and lecturer.

Sharon Fitelson, D.C. '80, who has achieved Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. Dr. Fitelson practices in Richmond Heights, a suburb of St. Louis, and recently was awarded the key to the city of Richmond Heights at a party celebrating the tenth anniversary of her practice.

Edward Waldo, D.C. '81, who also achieved Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. Additionally, Dr. Waldo has been selected to participate in a new patient treatment program at Doctors Hospital in Massillon, Oh. Doctors Hospital is associated with Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The hospital began allowing D.C.'s to treat patients three years ago. It was the first hospital in Ohio to implement such a program, and one of the first in the nation. Dr. Waldo practices in North Canton, Oh. Steve Mangas, D.C. '85, and his wife, Janet Hommel-Mangas, on the birth of their daughter, Alexandria Hommel, on December 27, 1990.

Ronald Pierce, D.C. '86, and his wife, lina, on the ·birth of their daughter, Loren, on November 16, 1990. Dr. Pierce recently introduced a network of 19 clinics, called America's Chiropractic Choice, in Phoenix, Az.

Condolences to •.• The family of Alvin Lukowitz, D.C. '52, who passed away on January 5, 1991. pr. Lukowitz practiced in South St. Louis until shortly before his death. He was the stepfather of Dr. Joseph Unger, Instructor of Chiropractic Science.

Chi Rho Sigma Scholarship Commemorates Dr. Art Nickson The Logan College Beta Chapter of Chi Rho Sigma, chiropractic service fraternity, has instituted a scholarship in memory of Dr. Art Nickson.

The Dr. Arthur Logan Nickson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students who have shown outstanding effort in promoting chiropractic within the community, while observing high standards of integrity, thus contributing to the preservation of the profession.

The executive board and members of Chi Rho Sigma decided to initiate the scholarship soon after the death of Dr. Nickson in June, 1989. Student Jeri Epstein, Chi Rho Sigma Scholarship Committee Chairman, explains: "Those of us who knew Dr. Art from our first day at Logan always found him to be willing to support and promote his profession. He was a source of great inspiration to us, as he was to many members of the Logan community and others in the chiropractic profession. We want very much to honor and perpetuate the memory of Dr. Art." Dr. Nickson entered Logan College as a member of the first class in 1935. His wife, Dr. Vi. Peiffer Nickson, joined him as a student.

Following his graduation from Logan, Dr. Art became the College's first registrar, and taught the freshman philosophy course. The Nicksons also established a practice in Webster Groves, a suburb of St. Louis.

Dr. Art also became one of the founders of the Association for the History of Chiropractic, and served as a board member and director of the organization.

Following his retirement in 1977, Dr. Art developed and presided over the Logan Archives. Dr. Vi Nickson, who continues her husband's work with the Archives, believes it is the most comprehensive collection of its kind within the chiropractic profession.

Chi Rho Sigma requires that recipients of its scholarship reflect

In keeping with this standard, an applicant for the scholarship must have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A., and must have made significant efforts to promote chiropractic to members of the general public. Each applicant must submit an essay providing the details of his or her efforts to broaden public awareness of chiropractic.

The recipient of the award is chosen by a panel of Chi Rho Sigma members, College alumni, and faculty members.

Chi Rho Sigma presented the first $500 award from the scholarship fund to Dr. Robert Einertson (then Trimester 9) during the 1990 Homecoming banquet. Epstein reports that the fraternity hopes to award at least one $500 scholarship annually.

"Eventually, we'd like to be able to offer more than one per year," she says.

Chi Rho Sigma invites Logan alumni, faculty, students, and friends to contribute to the scholarship fund. "We would very much appreciate donations of any amount, and we hope some people will contribute annually," says

Epstein.

Dr. Ramsey Honored in Ohio Dr. William Ramsey, Vice President for Academic Affairs, was honored during a two-day symposium held in October at Owens Technical College, in Toledo, Ohio.

Dr. Ramsey played a major role in initiating the two-year technical college concept, which paved the way for the Ohio system of technical colleges, and influenced the establishment of technical colleges in other states.

Claude Pierre-Jerome, M.D., Radiologist and Chiropractic Student Dr. Claude Pierre-Jerome, who has joined the faculty as an instructor of clinical science, also is completing his work toward the Doctor of Chiropractic degree, as reported in the last issue of the Tower. A native of Haiti, Dr. PierreJerome graduated from the Valencia Medical School in Spain. He began his studies at Logan in 1986, and took a leave of absence in 1987 to pursue research and a radiologic residency at Brussels University Hospital in Belgium. Recently, he shared some thoughts about his own career and the chiropractic profession.

Tower: Dr. Pierre-Jerome, how did you become interested in chiropractid Dr. P.-J.: When I was practicing as a radiologist in Switzerland, a friend, who also was a medical doctor, began studying chiropractic. As a radiologist, I found the idea of a neuromusculoskeletal approach to health care very interesting, and began observing the work of chiropractors. I saw that chiropractic is a superior way to deal with neuromusculoskeletal problems.

T.: How do you think Europeans tend to view the chiropractic profession?

Dr. P.-J.: I feel that in Europe, the public, as well as the medical profession, accept new concepts a little more easily than do Americans.

Natural approaches to health care are viewed positively there, and chiropractic is especially wellaccepted by the medical profession in Switzerland. The similarity between the professions - the diagnostic process -is emphasized more than the difference - natural versus chemical treatment. However, I think that acceptance 6f chiropractic is going in a positive direction in America, and the profession has a very good future here.

T.: How do you think health care will be affected by the new technologies in radiology?

Dr. P.-J.: Radiologists have a particular advantage in being in contact with the medical, osteopathic, and chiropractic professions, and all will

benefit from new technologies such as ultrasound scanning.

I also feel very strongly about the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. MRI will greatly benefit chiropractic diagnosis. It is especially effective for diagnosing disc problems and disorders of other joints, and in detecting the pathological features of cumulative trauma and other disorders, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

MRl's benefit both the patient and the doctor. They do not use radiation, and the time required for examination is relatively short. The doctor obtains much better resolution of images, which helps in analyzing bone lesions, and lesions of soft tissue.

MRl's also are very helpful in caring for athletes. I recently coauthored a book on this subject, MRI for Sports Injuries. It focuses on the diagnosis of injuries to the wrist, shoulder, elbow, and hip.

T. Have you had much opportunity to work with or observe the radiology department at Logan?

Dr. P-J.: Yes, I have consulted in the diagnostic review of X-rays for some Health Center cases. And I have especially enjoyed the colleagueship of Dr. Norman Kettner, who is Head of Radiology. He has given me a great deal of encouragement as I

have pursued my chiropractic degree.

T.: What are your plans after you complete your D.C. degree?

Dr. P.-J.: I want to continue teaching, and pursue research. I enjoy teaching physical diagnosis, and helping students to understand the problem-solving process of putting together a variety of information, which is needed for correct diagnosis. If you learn to enjoy the diagnostic process and work on it, it becomes simpler.

Dr. Taylor Appointed to Editorial Board Dr. Michael Taylor, Health Center Instructor, recently joined the editorial board of D. C. Tracts, as an expert analyst for the internal diagnosis section. He also has served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Chiropractic Medicine since 1989. Dr. Taylor is a

College Represented at Chiropractic College Development Conference Sharon Kehrer, Executive Alumni Director, represented the College at the Chiropractic Colleges' Development, Public Relations and Alumni Conference, hosted by New York College of Chiropractic and held in Westbury, N.Y., in November.

The conference provided participants the opportunity to learn abou.t and discuss techniques presented by speakers with expertise in fundraisi ng, marketing, and Sharon Kehrer, Executive Alumni Director, (front row, 3rd from left) with other public relations.

Dr. Grant Serves as Instructor for A CA Orient Study Tour Dr. Ronald Grant, Clinical Director, served for the second time as instructor for an international study tour of the Orient, sponsored by the American Chiropractic Association.

Dr. Grant was among 20 ACA members who participated in the 15-day tour, held in October.

Dr. Grant comments: "It was very interesting for participants in the tour to see that chiropractic care in the Orient is, in many ways, where we were in this country twenty-five years ago. The public and members of other health disciplines are very receptive to chiropractic care, since natural, holistic approaches to health have been traditional in the Orient.

"However, some of the governments resist the chiropractors' efforts to obtain licensure for their profession, and in China, chiropractors can be arrested for 'practicing medicine without a license,' as often happened in this country. And, without licensure, there are many people with little or no training practicing chiropractic throughout

the Orient. It is a real challenge for the D.C.'s to try to stop untrained people from practicing, and develop the political skills and contacts necessary to obtain licensure. It is also difficult for them to find time for political work, because their practices are so busy."

The tour included visits to Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, Pattaya, and Hong Kong, with scheduled meetings with chiropractors in each country, and with members of the Traditional Chinese School of Medicine. Seminars scheduled into the tour covered traditional Oriental methods of pain control, including acupuncture.

Research and Publications Update Dr. Gary Sanders, Director of Research, and Dr. Donna Mannello visited Palmer West College in Sunnyvale, Cal. on January 10-12 to attend the the quarterly meeting of the Consortium for Chiropractic Research.

Dr. Sanders, and Drs. Brian Snyder and Elmer Hawkinson gave presentations at the annual meeting of the

Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research (FACR), held in Phoenix, February 15-17. Dr. Sanders discussed "Research Objectives for the 1990's." Dr. Snyder spoke on "The Pain Study Update" and Dr. Hawkinson discussed "The Preliminary Results of the FACR Multi-Center Study."

Drs. Hawkinson and Snyder also participated in workshops discussing various aspects of the Toftness system of chiropractic adjusting.

The Winter issue of Logan Speaks, which focused on research, listed many recent general and research publications of members of the Logan faculty. Logan Ice Hockey Club Playing Chiropractic College and Undergraduate University Teams The Logan Hockey Club has begun what promises to be an exciting season of play, its first in intercollegiate competition. Scott Bakunas, Trimester 8, who serves as president of the club, reports that the club recently returned from a round-robin tournament with Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Although the club lost- its games against CMCC, its members enjoyed a 3-2 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis after they returned.

As we were going to press, the club was finalizing its schedule.

Members expected to play teams from Washington University and the University of Missouri-Columbia.

The club also was hoping to participate in the Chiro Cup Hockey Tournament, to be hosted by Northwestern Chiropractic College, in early March.

Club members have raised their own funds to meet the expenses of intercollegiate play. Bakunas commented: "This started out as just a fun activity, but as we played more, we became serious about competing against other teams." He also

Health Center Hosts Chiropractic Awareness Day

Saturday, November 17, was "Chiropractic Awareness Day" at the campus Health Center. Center

patients were invited to bring friends interested in chiropractic care, who were given the opportu-

nity to learn about chiropractic, and about the Center's services and facilities .. More than 150 visitors attended the event.

Each guest was given a complete physical examination, X-rays, if needed, physical therapy, if needed, and chiropractic care. There was no charge for the services provided, but each visitor was asked to bring two non-perishable food items. The Center received 461 pounds of food, which was donated to the Salvation Army.

Interns of Trimesters 8, 9, and 10 provided the examinations and chiropractic care. Dr. Kathleen Naughton, Assistant Director of Clinical Services, coordinated the event,.and commented, "We were very happy to have a large turn-out, and we hope to have similar programs at the satellite Health Centers in the future."

Recently Published Books Include Chapters by Drs. Venditti and Johnson Dr. Patrick Venditti, Director of the Logan Ergonomics Center, recently contributed a chapter to an interdisciplinary book on low back pain. Published by Williams and Wilkins, and titled Conservative Care of Low Back Pain, the book was edited by Arthur H. White, M.D. and Robert Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., D.C. Dr. Venditti's chapter is entitled, "Functional and Work Capacity Evaluation". Thirty-nine other authors from various health and scientific disciplines contributed to the book, which will be available soon. Contact the Logan Bookstore for more information.

Dr. Gary Johnson, Educational Coordinator, contributed a chapter to a textbook, edited by R.C. Schafer, D.C., F.l.C.C. The book, Basic Principles of Chiropractic - the Neuroscience Foundation of Clinical Practice, was published

"Colleagues of the College" Program Inaugurated The College has introduced a new program to involve Logan alumni and other practicing chiropractors in active student recruiting, and to publicly recognize them for their efforts.

The program, titled "Colleagues of the College" was developed by the Office of Admissions. Its primary purpose is to encourage doctors to aid Logan in student recruitment, by seeking and interviewing prospective students for the College.

Alumni and other doctors participating in the program also will be asked to display some of the College's attractive printed materials in their waiting rooms, where they can be perused by patients. Additionally, each doctor will be supplied with printed information about careers in chiropractic.

Doctors recommending prospective students to the Office of Admissions will be honored as "Colleagues of the College."

Logan students, non-chiropractic health professionals, and friends of the College who refer prospective students also will be-

come Colleagues. Each Colleague will receive a handsome certificate suitable for framing. Special commemorative awards will be presented to alumni who have achieved higher numbers of prospective student referrals.

"Colleagues of the College" also will be recognized in the Tower.

Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, Di rector of Admissions, comments, "This new program should greatly increase alumni participation in our recruitment efforts. We have long felt the successful chiropractors who know what an excellent education they received at Logan, are the best representatives in working with prospective students. They are great salesmen and saleswomen for the College."

Dr. Lee Shaffer, Recruitment Coordinator, who is implementing the Colleagues program, adds: "We've already had calls from alumni who have heard about the program, and they seemed to be really enthusiastic about it. We expect that many people will participate."

Student Doctors Council Officers Elected "SOC Awards Day" was held on November 30 during an all-school assembly. The Student Doctors Council elected new officers (to serve for two trimesters), and also presented service awards to students, faculty members, and staff.

The new SOC officers are: President - Steve Sweat, Trimester 9; Vice president - Lynn Borst, Trimester 8; and Treasurer Kraig Phares, Trimester 8. Diana Tucker, Trimester 7, is the Upper Tris' Professional Committee representative and Lonnie Crafton, Trimester 6, is the representative for the. Lower Tris. · The SOC President's Award was presented by outgoing president Chuck Plante to Jeri Epstein, Trimester 7. The award recognizes an SOC member who has provided unusual service to the SOC. Epstein was cited for her service as the Lower Tris Professional Committee Representative, and for her work in support of the College's self-study program and a student survey. She also was among four students who represented Logan at the World Congress of Chiropractic Students, held in England in September 1990.

The SOC Distributors' Day Committee, led by students Lynn Borst and Richard Gehrs, coordinated the event. Since each distributor paid a fee to exhibit, the SDC earned approximately $3,000 after expenses were paid. According to Gehrs, "The vendors were delighted with the turnout of students as well as local doctors, and the students and doctors felt good about the opportunity to visit with many vendors in a short amount of time."

chase of a new 25-inch television set for the student lounge. Lynn Borst, Trimester 8, presently serving as vice-president of the SDC, coordinated the purchase of the television during the Fall trimester, when she served as SDC Student Services Chairman. She reports that the television has joined other items placed in the student lounge for entertainment, including a pool table and a pinball machine. Borst adds that future plans call for a VCR to be added to the lounge equipment, so that students will be able to view adjustive and seminar tapes.

The Research Division recently

acquired a Tissue Compliance Meter, which objectively and quantitatively measures the consistency of soft tissue. The instrument is proving useful for various types of research, including the evaluation of the effects of chiropractic adjustive techniques on soft tissue consistency. Initial studies conducted by the Research Division, utilizing the Tissue Compliance Meter, were described in the Winter issue of Logan Speaks.

A new 15' X 20' movie screen has been installed in the gymnasium, as a result of a donation by the Logan Alumni STAR Program. It has replaced an old, manually operated, 10' X 10' screen.

Bill Weidler, Media Production Coordinator, comments, "The new screen will not only provide greater visibility to everyone at assemblies, but because of its extra width, it will provide the capability of dual slide projection for comparison of X-ray slides.

"We appreciate the Alumni STAR donors' ,generosity in providing the screen. Also, the Maintenance staff deserves recognition for their hard work with the difficult installation of the screen."

The Student Doctors Council recently financed the purchase of four new Zenith computers, and software for word processing, graphics, and spreadsheets. The computers are being used by students in Trimesters 1 through 7 (the upper Tris have three computers reserved for their use).

The four Zenith computers are connected to the same near-letterquality printer. Trimester 10 student Richard Gehrs, who serves as Computer Chairman of the SDC, coordinated the purchase of the computers.

The work was part of the College's ongoing program of classroom renovations. liered seating was constructed to provide unobstructed viewing for all students in Room G-107, on the lower level of the Montgomery Health Center. The 109 chairs in the

room are totally adjustable and compliant with ergonomic standards.

Similar chairs and new tables were installed in the two smaller rooms, 132 and 142-C, in the main building.

The new chairs will continue to be used after these two rooms are converted to tiered seating, in the future.

Harbor Light Patients Enjoyed a Warmer Christmas, Thanks to the Health Center Dr. Kathleen Naughton and Health Center secretary Elaine Kumm led a fund-raising drive, which generated $1,368 to buy 80 Christmas gifts for Harbor Light Clinic patients and residents of the Salvation Army Detoxification Unit.

On December 14, patients at Montgomery Clinic, Community Health Center, and Dellwood Clinic received free adjustments, and were asked to make donations for the fund-raiser. The ATT Paradyne Company of St. Louis also made a contribution. , Sixth grade students at ¡the Holman Middle School in St. Louis County raised more than $280 through bake sales and a toy auction, and wrapped the gift boxes. (The entire Holman student body also had the opportunity to learn about Harbor Light, during a slide-show presentation given by Doug Stirrat, Director of Institutional Development, at a school assembly.)

Each gift box contained a flannel shirt, a T-shirt, a hat, a pair of gloves, and two pairs of socks. Some of the gifts were taken to Harbor Light prior to Christmas for distribution to Clinic patients during treatments.

Most of the gifts were distributed on Christmas Day, to residents of the Salvation Army Detoxification Unit.

Logan Student Serving in Saudi Arabia One Logan student was called up to serve with Operation Desert Shield. Jim Laux reported to his marine reserve unit in early December, as he was about to complete his sixth trimester of study.

He left for Saudi Arabia soon after Christmas.

Laux is the son of Dr. Kenneth James Laux, Sr. '63, of Oceanside, N.Y., and the brother of students Fran (Trimester 7) and Ben (Trimester 1) Laux.

As we were going to press, there was a possibility of two other students being called to serve in Saudi Arabia.

The Trimester 4 class and the Health Center staff organized a Christmas drive for U.S. servicemen and women in Saudi Arabia. A variety of gifts, suggested by the Red Cross, were collected and sent in time for Christmas. They were accompanied by a giant Christmas card, signed by many Logan students, faculty, and staff members.

The residents also watched a videotape of the sixth-graders, in which one boy read a poem he wrote for the residents, and other students were shown wrapping the gifts.

College Saving on Fuel Costs Logan recently converted from oil to gas as the main fuel source for the buildings on campus. The conversion process involved removal of the old oil burners and their replacement by gas burners.

"The conversion to gas will result in considerable financial savings," noted Robert Brueggemann, Plant Superintendent. "We now have cleaner, more reliable heating that also is less labor-intensive."

The Science, Research, and Ergonomics Building, completed in 1988, was constructed to use gas as its fuel source. A gas main which was brought to the campus for that building was extended to serve the other buildings on campus.

New Directors Appointed at Dellwood and Community Health Centers Dr. Ron Grant, Clinical Director, recently announced the appointment of new directors at the Dellwood and Community Satellite Health Centers. They are Dr. John Kiernan '88 (Dellwood) and Dr. Bill Hemmer '88 (Community). The Health Center directors supervise student interns in the areas of diagnosis, development of treatment plans, case review, and patient education.

Prior to attending Logan, Dr. Kiernan completed an associate degree program in applied science and medical technology at Schollcraft College in Lavonia, Mich. He worked as a paramedic and medical technologist prior to attending Logan. Dr. Kiernan previously taught the College's laboratory technique course, and practices with Bell Chiropractic, located in North St. Louis County (he is a partner in this practice).

New Alcohol and Drug Policy Established to Conform with New Federal Requirements Dr. Donald Christy, Dean of Admissions and St.udent Services, reports that as of September, 1990, an official institutional policy regarding drugs and alcohol was in place. The College was required by recently updated federal laws to write and implement a comprehensive policy in this area.

The College will not intrude on the private lives of students, but is required to ensure that drug and alcohol problems do not interfere with the physical or mental functioning of students.

The newly stated policy allows moderate use of beer and wine at special, supervised, sanctioned College events. Otherwise, no alcoholic beverages may be manufactured, consumed, sold, or dispensed, and under no circumstances may illegal drugs be manufactured, sold, dispensed, or used on College property.

The College also must have established guidelines for assisting students or employees with chemical dependency problems. The policy states that chemical dependency is to be viewed as any other treatable illness, and that anyone with this problem will undergo an assessment by the Counseling Services Department. The Department is staffed by licensed mental health professionals, and offers services to students free of charge. Individuals with chemical dependency problems can be referred to outside programs for counseling.

The complete institutional policy on drugs and alcohol is included in Section 3 of the Student Handbook.

Students Instrumental in Success of Alumni Phonathon More than 50 student volunteers participated in a recent, highly successful fundraising phonathon.

The students worked approximately four hours each night, telephoning alumni to request annual gift donations.

Doug Stirrat, Director of Institutional Development, reports that

alumni pledged contributions totaling more than $90,000. More than $51,000 already has been received.

The monies will be used for renovation of classrooms, College debt retirement, and other institutional needs.

Ergonomics Center Update Dr. Patrick Venditti, Director of the Logan Ergonomics Center, reports that the Center has entered into a contract with Lever Brothers, a division of Unilever, which has asked the Center to perform an ergonomic/biomechanical analysis at its powdered soap plant in South St. Louis. The company's management is concerned about the number of upper extremity injuries experienced by its workers. Following the initial study, ergonomic analyses may be performed throughout the rest of the company.

The next Ergonomics Worksite Analysis Workshop will be held March 14-16, 1991. The three-day workshop is the only one of its kind in the United States. The course involves travel to two St. Louis factories, where the participants

PAGE 23 have the opportunity to videotape and study various work stations.

Since 1987, more than 200 doctors, safety professionals, and governmental personnel have attended the workshop. Dr. Venditti reports that in October, 1990, the workshop was attended by the entire Division of Labor Standards of the Missouri Department of Labor.

College Honored

by Health Care for the Homeless Coalition The College has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Health Care for the Homeless Coalition of Greater St. Louis. The award, presented at a luncheon at Alexian Brothers Hospital on January 23,

recognized the outreach work of the College through its satellite health clinic at the Salvation Army's Harbor Light Center. The College also has provided health care to the homeless through other centers for indigent persons. The award was accepted by Dr. Ron Grant, Clinical Director, who has been named a member of the Coalition's executive board.

Additionally, the Coalition has awarded the College a grant of $4,000 to help pay for an X-ray unit at the Harbor Light Center, and the Coalition funds the X-ray film used there.

Dr. Grant comments, "There were a number of people from hospitals and agencies at the luncheon at Alexian Brothers who seemed intrigued by our work with the homeless. The award we received provided wonderful exposure within the non-chiropractic health community."

The 1991 Homecoming and Alumni Reunion, sponsored by the Logan Alumni Association, is scheduled for June 13-15, at the St. Louis Marriott Airport Hotel, and on the Logan campus.

Several outstand:ng educational programs are planned. The individuals who will be lecturing are:

William N. Coggins D.C., F.l.C.C., third Logan College President (19611979) has a long and distinguished record of educational and professional leadership. A 1940 Logan graduate, Dr. Coggins studied Basic Technique under Dr. H.B. Logan, and taught at the College prior to and during his term as President. He is the author of Basic Technique - A System of Body Mechanics.

Prior to attending Logan, Dr. Coggins graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, and later received a Bachelor of Science degree from Shurtleff College in Alton, Ill.

Robert S. Francis, D.C. is Dean of the Clinical Sciences Division and Director of Professional and Legislative Relations at Texas Chiropractic College.

He also teaches courses within his division and directs hospital rotations for chiropractic interns at three hospitals in the Houston, Tex. area.

Prior to attending Texas Chiropractic College, from which he graduated in 1986, Dr. Francis served as Research Director for the Senate Committee on Human Resources.

Dr. Francis' other educational credentials include a bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University, a master's degree from the University of Missouri, and Advanced Clinical Sciences Certification from the Southeast Back Institute.

Dr. Francis has received several recognition and service awards from the Texas Chiropractic Association, including Doctor of the Year, District 11, 1990.

In addition to numerous journal articles, Dr. Leach's publications include a book, The Chiropractic Theories - A Synopsis of Scientific Research.

Dr. Leach graduated from Life Chiropractic College in 1978. He has chaired the Research and the Continuing Education committees of the Mississippi Associated Chiropractors. He received the Association's Research Award in 1986.

Terry Yochum, D.C., D.A.C.B.R., is Director of the Rocky Mountain Chiropractic Radiological Center in Denver, Col. He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Radiology for Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and recently was appointed Clinical Instructor in Skeletal Radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Dr. Yochum previously was a faculty member at Logan, and at National College of Chiropractic.

He also served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of

Radiology at the Phillip Institute of Technology - School of Chiropractic in Melbourne, Australia, and played a major role in the establishment of the Center for Excellence in Radiology at the Phillip Institute.

Dr. Yochum's publications include the comprehensive textbook, Essentials of Skeletal Radiology, which he coauthored. He has written more than 60 professional papers and case studies, and was co-initiator of the "Radiology Corner" of the ACA Journal. He presently serves on the editorial review board of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT).

Dr. Yochum graduated CJm Laude from National College of Chiropractic in 1972. He is Past President of the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology.

Beatrice B. Hagen, D.C., F.l.C.C., President of Logan College since 1980, (inaugurated February 1981) has made many outstanding contributions as a leader within the chiropractic profession.

A 1940 Logan graduate, Dr. Hagen was a member of the Logan faculty during the '40's.

She later practiced in Valley Stream, N.Y. and in Frankfort, N.Y., and held numerous offices within the New York State Chiropractic Association.

Dr. Hagen _was elected to serve on the Logan College Board of Trustees in 1972, and became Chairman of the Board in 1977.

Since becoming President of Logan in 1980, she has served on several committees of the Council on Chiropractic Education, and was the first woman to serve as President of the Council (1986 to 1988).

Among the many honors Dr. Hagen has received for her contributions to the chiropractic profession are the "Chiropractor of the Year" awards of the

American Chiropractic Association (1982) and The American Chiropractor journal (1987).

Richard A. McMichael, D.C., a Logan graduate (1972), has become a leader in the area of documentation for insurance claims review.

Dr.' McMichael co-authored the Ohio State Chiropractic Association's Chiropractic Manual for Insurance Claims Personnel, which has been adopted as the standard of chiropractic practice by chiropractic associations in ten states.

Dr. McMichael, who practices in Canton, Ohio, has taught courses on chiropractic insurance claims throughout the United States. He also has been a leader in efforts to enable chiropractors in Ohio to obtain hospital privileges, and was one of the first six D.C.'s in the state to be granted such privileges.

Dr. McMichael was President of the Ohio State Chiropractic Association from 1987 to 1989, and has held several other offices within the Association. He has been a facilitator of association planning conferences in numerous states, and was a five-time delegate to the ACA/ICA Legislative Conference. In 1986, he received the President's Award of the Ohio State Chiropractic Association.

Dr. McMichael serves on the faculty of the Logan Postgraduate Division.

Larry J. Steele, D.C., a 1964 Logan graduate, has served as Alumni Representative to the Logan College Board of Trustees since 1989, and previously was President of the Logan College Alumni Association (1986-1987). He is the 1990

Logan College Alumnus of the Year.

A member of the Basic Technique Task Force of the Logan Board of Trustees, Dr. Steele joined Dr. Beatrice Hagen, Logan President, in teaching a six-day seminar on Basic Technique in Mexico during the spring and summer of 1990. This course was offered through the Logan Postgraduate Division.

Dr. Steele practices in Bloomington, Ind., and has been active within the Indiana State Chiropractic Association, for which he served as a district president in 1967. Dr. Steele also has shown a strong commitment to community service. His extensive work with the Boy Scouts earned him the National Boy Scout Council's Award for Outstanding Service to Youth.

Neill F. Piland, Dr.P.H. (Doctor of Public Health) has 20 years of experience in health services research, teaching, planning, evaluation, and program administration. He has directed projects in the areas of health care financing, economics, long-term care, mental health care delivery systems, drug use, rural health services delivery, health promotion, and smoking cessation.

Dr. Piland received his B.A., M.P.H., and Dr.P.H. from the University of California/Los Angeles. He also received a master's degree in economics from the University of California/Davis. He recently became the Director of the Center for Health and Population Research, Lovelace Medical Foundation, in Albuquerque, N.M. He previously directed the Foundation's Health Services Research and Education Division.

Dr. Piland also is an Assistant Professor. in the Department of Family, Community and Emergency Medicine of the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.

Dr. Versendaal To Offer Seminar Dick A. Versendaal, D.C. has spent 25 years analyzing chiropractic technique procedures. He has compiled information resulting from his studies in a comprehensive manual of chiropractic diagnosis and treatment, which is titled: Contact Reflex Analysis and Applied Trophology.

The manual emphasizes the monitoring of body reflexes and the muscular system, in order to evaluate the function of the b-ody's systems.

Dr. Versendaal has lectured to chiropractic and dental groups throughout the U.S. He is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. ' Dr. Versendaal's seminar, while not part of Logan's Homecoming, is available at no charge to those attending Homecoming.
