Faculty Awards, Promotions Announced

Board of Trustees Chooses New Members The Logan College Board of Trustees met at the College on February 4 and elected five new members and reelected one member.

Elected to three-year terms on the Board were: Dr. Gerald W. Kari of Forest Lake, MN; Senator Thomas W. McCarthy of Chesterfield, MO; Dr. Gretchen N. Schreffler of Iowa City, IA' and Mr. Robert J. Stearley of Fr~ntenac, MO. Elected to one-year terms as Board members were: Dr. George H. Parker of St. Louis, faculty representative to the Board, who was re-elected; and Dr. Larry J. Steele of Bloomington, IN, representing the Logan College Alumni Association.

Dr. Gary Casper received the coveted "Faculty Member of the Year" Award.

The annual Faculty Awards Dinner, given by the College Board of Trustees to pay tribute to the College's loyal, hard-working faculty, too k place on February 4, at the Adam s Mark Hotel in downtown St. Louis.

The coveted award as "Faculty Member of the Year," which is voted upon by the entire faculty, went to Gary P. Casper, D.C., D.A.C.B.R., an instructor in the Chiropractic Science Division.

Dr. Casper was presented the award

by Dr. Gordon Toftness, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. A 1984 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, Dr. Casper joined Lo9an's faculty in 1985. He became a D1plomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Roentgenology in 1988.

In addition, Dr. Arthur L. Nickson was re-elected to a one-year term as a Logan Advisory Council member.

Dr. Kari, a 1963 graduate, served previous terms on the Board of Trustees in 1974-1975 and 1985-1987. Senator McCarthy, a member for the past year of Logan's Advisory Council, has been a member of the Missouri State Senate since 1982 after previously serving in the Missouri House of Representatives. He is a graduate of the Saint Louis University School of Law. Dr. Schreffler, a 1943 graduate, has practiced chiropractic in Iowa City since 1961. She previously served on the Board of Trustees from 1978-1987.

Mr. Stearley, who had served on Logan's Advisory Council for the P.ast year, has retired as Corporate Vic~ President of the Jefferson Smurfit Corporation in St. Louis. He spent over 30 years as an executive in the packaging industry. (continued on page 2)

Board of Trustees (continued from page 1) Dr. Steele, a 1964 graduate, specializes in Basic Technique full spine practice in Bloomington. A member of the Logan Advisory Council for the past year, he also has been a board member of the Logan Alumni Association and Immediate Past President.

Dr. Parker graduated in 1952 from Missouri Chiropractic College, which later merged with Logan. He completed a two-year postgraduate training program in radiology at Logan College and postgraduate program in orthopedics at National Chiropractic College. He has practiced chiropractic in the St. Louis area for more than 30 years, with an emphasis on orthopedics. Dr. Nickson was a member of Logan's first graduating class in 1939, along with his wife, Dr. Violet Nickson. He practiced chiropractic in Webster Groves, Mo. for 38 years until his retirement in 1978. He and Dr. Violet now serve as the College archivists and have been solely responsible for preserving our history.

Endowment Program Gaining Support In February, the Logan Board of Trustees and Alumni Board unanimously approved implementation of a life insurance endowment program to help insure the future solvency of our institution. Through this method, a donor may give the college a substantial gift, by making small regular payments, in a plan developed to allow the- giver to determine his/her own level of participation.

To endow is defined as to give money or property to provide an income for support. Endowment is defined as a bequest or gift today that will provide income at a future date. This type of program has been undertaken at Logan, as with most other colleges and universities, because it is difficult to project how the economy may be in the future. Life insurance is an extremely viable means by which most individuals protect those they care about after their own death.

Most of the major American colleges have attained their position of eminence because of the thoughtful planning of alumni members who gifted them with life insurance policies.

Sherry Traylor, a trimester 8 student, was named "Miss Metro St. Louis" last Fall, and will be competing in the "Miss Missouri" contest in June.

Sherry, who is 24 years old and 5'6" tall, grew up in Indiana, where she lived on a farm. A 1986 graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington,

Sherry holds a BA in Chemistry. At Indiana, she was the recipient of the Rice Scholarship, was a Resident Assistant, and participated in Red Carpet Tours, Usher Corps, and the Student Foundation. Sherry participated in a number of other pageants, and was the "Miss Indiana Swimsuit" finalist in the "Miss Indiana" 1987 competition. She continues to serve as a director for the "Miss Pike County" pageant in her home town.

Here at Logan, Sherry has been President of the Omega Sigma Phi sorority, and participated in several volunteer events. She served as the coordinator for the Comic Relief Telethon 11 for the homeless. When she was asked to share some of her thoughts about her life, she says, "I am a person who respects tradition and heritage." Although Sherry ap'!!!~~===:::::::~!J pears to be worldly and sophisticated, ~ she is a truly homey individual whose household is filled with antiques.

nounced the results of the Williams and Wilkin's Chiropractic Student Scholarship Awards. ¡ Two Logan students, William Roodman, a December 1988 graduate and Michael Taylor, a trimester 10 student, have been awarded First and Second Place respectively and will have their articles published in the June issue of Chiropractic Sports Medicine. Williams and Wilkins, publishers of Chiropractic Sports Medicine, sponsors this yearly nationwide competition to encourage chiropractic students to submit original, publishable manuscripts. Dr. Grant Appointed

by Hospital Dr. Ronald Grant, Director of Clinical Services, was recently appointed to the Special Health Division, Department of Chiropractic, at Normandy Osteopathic Medical Center in St. Louis County. The hospital operates two facilities in St. Louis. Dr. Grant is the first Logan faculty member to be appointed this position.

Harbor Light Center Opened The Salvation Army/Logan College Harbor Light Center is officially open, and is now treating patients every day during the week. Dr. Ron Grant, Director of Clinical Operations of the Health Centers, and Mr. Doug Stirrat, Director of Institutional Development, are pleased to announce the opening of this facility which became a labor of love for the pair.

Last fall, the College began working with the Health Care Coalition for the Homeless, and ultimately began working with the Salvation Army at a chemical detoxification and recovery center. Realizing that chiropractic was the first health profession to completely shun the use of chemicals and substances of any type, the Salvation Army anxiously undertook a working partnership with Logan. It was not long before they found an abandoned building ideally suited for a health center. After considering the idea at length, Grant and Stirrat took the idea to the college hierarchy who quickly approved pursuing the idea of a new health center adjacent to the Salvation Army Center.

There was much work to be done to the building, which was little more than a gutted dilapidated warehouse.

Stirrat called upon the services of the Logan student body, and with Andy Hosenfeld, a trimester 9 student, began the work. Patients and residents of the Salvation Army program got involved and plans were drawn up to renovate the building into a six treatment room clinic. Andy has a painting business, and volunteered his time to paint both the interior and exterior of the building. Deb Schaefer~ another trimester 9 student, lent her artistic talents and painted a 20' sign to hang over the building.

Every time they were called on, students showed up to give a few hours of their time. Many, many students volunteered hundreds of hours to complete the project.

The college allocated funds to purchase the paint, drywall, and other miscellaneous supplies, and the Alumni Association provided $2,500 toward completion of the project. A donation of bathroom fixtures from McCarthy Construction and concrete

from Weber Construction helped keep the costs in line. Mr. Ray Goldkamp, a local merchant, has agreed to supply an air conditioning system for the building. The Salvation Army continues to provide utilities., Phoenix Interiors completed the tile and flooring at a significantly reduced fee.

'Under the direction of Dr. Dan Daley, the center has a staff of 12 interns and currently has two shifts of 7 rotating interns, who are seeing 20-30 patients per day. They hope to have up to 60 patients per day by the end of summer. Positions on the staff are highly desired by the students who realize what a dynamic experience it will provide them.

Dr. Daley stated, "As an alumnus who has been involved with the other two satellite centers, I think this clinic provides our students with the greatest diversity of physical conditions musculoskeletal problems - degen-

erative diseases - real life tragic situations. These are people who have been neglected. They have abused their bodies, and they are suffering.

The College is to be commended for undertaking this kind of project."

Students remarked, "It's a great clinical experience because of the variety of cases they are seeing, and the unbelievable appreciation expressed by the underserved and underprivileged sector of our community. After all, that is who we are here for and it really is working."

The Harbor Light facility houses a detoxification center, a Veterans Residence, information service, and job program, and physically houses up to 300 persons per night. The Logan Center is serving all these people, but is also open to the local community, with no charges for services.

Logan Participation in Proceedings of The 1989 International Conference on Spinal Manipulation March 31-April 1, 1989 The International Conference on Spinal Manipulation sponsored the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) was conducted recently in Washington, D.C., and Logan College was well represented at the conference. Dr. Donna Mannello, a member of the Research and Teaching faculty presented a paper entitled Chiropractic Treatment of Hospitalized Patient With Acute Low Back Pain. This paper was co-authored

by the Director of Research, Gary Sanders, Ph.D. Patrick Maloney, Ph.D., presented a paper entitled Evaluating The Algometer as a Diagnostic Instrument

and was co-authored by Drs. Tepe, Buerger, Petermann, Picinich, and Robbins.

Dr. George Goodman was an observer at the proceedings and stated that the conference was an academic milestone in the development of chiropractic research and the papers presented were extremely intellectually stimulating.

Dr. John Gutweiler attended as Director of Student Research. He remarked on the great strides being made in the area•of student research.

Quality Review Services (QRS). The new company will be headquartered in Clintonville. This service has evolved since the legislative changes in patient care became effective in January, 1988. Patients in Wisconsin were given the right by law for their choice of health care. Special Thanks To Our Referring Doctors for 1988 A major strength of the chiropractic profession is the spirit of brotherhood, and the perpetuation of its growth and improvement, through referring highly qualified young people to our doors. Over the years the profession continues to become stronger because of this nurturing, and we are truly grateful to all of these individuals. Many of these people take time out of a very busy schedule to meet with prospective students seeking information and guidance in pursuing a career. These doctors participate in College and Career Fairs, maintain college catalogs in their offices, and personally call our Admissions Office to let us know of an interested student. International Conference of Clinical Directors Meeting - February 3-4, 1989

The Mentorship Program: Progress in Educational Excellence!

Dr. Grant, Director of Clinical Operations of the Health Centers for Logan, recently initiated the "mentorship program" for student interns.

The program is an excellent opportunity for aspiring interns to prepare for clinical diagnosis in private practice capacities. Interns are under the supervision of licensed chiropractors who manage and instruct the student intern. Each student is required to complete diagnostic evaluations, adjustments, adjunctive therapy, and concise reports in regard to the patient's well being. The program is a more personal approach for educational purposes and instrumental for progress in the field of chiropractic.

Dr. Grant states: "The mentorship program will greatly benefit the student intern and provide professional health care for the patient." The program has been implemented in the campus clinic as well as the various satellite clinics throughout the community."

Dr. Toftness Delivers!

Despite the inclement weather, Dr. Gordon Toftness, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Logan, visited our campus and presented various trimester classes with an inspiring and educational presentation of chiropractic philosophy. His deep roots in the philosophy of H.B. Logan was quite evident as he presented various case studies which dealt exclusively with Basic Technique as a treatment method. Dr. Toftness, a practicing chiropract~r for over 40 years and a graduate of Logan College, emphasized the return to Basic(s): "We, as fellow Logan graduates, must emphasize the philosophy of H.B. Logan in our practice and utilize it to the fullest extent. Moreover, this institution was built on the premise of H.B. Logan, and many students from other chiropractic colleges yearn for this knowledge."

Dr. Toftness emphasized body mechanics as an operational asset for any aspiring chiropractor. In conclusion, his visit proved to be a "basic" motivation for all students.

Dr. Hultine's Visit

Logan College was graced by the presence of an authentic alumnus of 1943, Dr. June Hultine of Wisconsin.

She is currently a member of the Alumni Board and organizes the before/after x-ray competition. She presented an array of before/after xrays to various trimester classes to stress the significant contributions of basic technique to the health of society. Dr. Hultine emphasized the importance of professional care in a personable atmosphere. Truly a member of the illustrious "dinosaur gang," she continues a very successful practice ~n Milwaukee. Currently, her daughter is completing her 8th trimester at Logan.

In Search of the Right Chiropractic College

by Major Gary Rovin My search for the right chiropractic college began in earnest in the spring of 1983. Having spent the previous twelve years as a U.S. Air Force officer and fighter pilot, I felt the time had arrived to explore career p¡aths beyond the wild, blue yonder. After a lengthy letter-writing campaign and examining numerous career possibilities, a reply from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) opened the door to opportunities in chiropractic and led me to begin the quest for the right chiropractic college.

Finding the chiropractic college which completely fulfills all of a prospective student's needs can be a most time consuming and perplexing process, largely because of a wide range of uncertainties inherent in entering uncharted territory. These cover the spectrum from macro issues (such as understanding the diversification of chiropractic philosophies, differences in academic focus, scope of curriculum, physical facilities, faculty and student composition), through intermediate concerns (such as location, cost, research opportunities, availability of part-time employment), all the way down to the most microscopic areas (including, but not limited to climate, recreation opportunities, population base, distance to home, etc.). However, before becoming overwhelmed with the nuts and bolts of the final selection process, it's worthwhil~ to first get a feel for the different chiropractic colleges that are available to you.

Most libraries have numerous guides to pre-professional and professional health care educational institutes, which list the various chiropractic colleges in the United States. My initial interest was a world-wide look at chiropractic colleges, so I corresponded directly with the ACA. These nice folks published a handy guide entitled, "The State of Chiropractic: 1983" (which is no doubt updated periodically) which include all chiropractic colleges in the world and their

mailing addresses. From the list, I requested catalogs and ~nformation from every accredited chiropractic college in the U.S., one in Canada and one. in Australia. I researched them all and began my search.

My first stop was college A, a college located in the suburbs of a large city.

Here we found a top-notch school. In the outstanding category were the campus, faculty, student body, and curriculum. Much attention had gone into developing a broad scope of academia, covering a wide range of sciences and hands-on skills. The outpatient clinic was smaller than other campuses, but appeared to run efficiently and provide the students with a varied patient population from the surrounding metropolitan area.

College A's major deficiency is that it is singularly the most expensive chiropractic college in the nation.

I now had a fairly good idea of what the ideal chiropractic college would be like. It would begin in a suburban setting, on a rolling hillside, with an overall air of tranquility and warmth.

The campus would be large enough to accommodate the existing student population, and have an abundance of classroom facilities, lecture halls, support facilities and public areas. The curriculum would reflect the broadest possible scope of chiropractic endeavor, would encompass a variety of

chiropractic specialities, and enjoy a nation-wide reputation for producing exceptional doctors of chiropractic.

Academic excellence would be casually obvious to visitors, to include a select faculty with top-notch credentials and experience, which complimented a goal-oriented and professionally comported student body.

Early student involvement in the clinical environment would be provided in a modern setting with stateof-the-art examination, adjusting and diagnostic facilities designed to accommodate a diverse and burgeoning patient population. Chiropractic research would be both a priority and a reality, as evidenced by an expansive research plant staffed by full-time researchers. Quality chiropractic training offered for a reasonable tuition, with adequate community facilities to support off-campus student services and activities. Overall, these seemed reasonable expectations, yet their realization had eluded us thus far. Most schools satisfied some of the criteria, but failed in one or more areas which we deemed essential to our educational objectives. That was the case until we got to St. Louis.

THE TOWER/SPRING 1989 tion of using a letter-designation to represent this college since it was the only chiropractic institute we encountered which exceeded all of our expectations, provided a number of innovations which were unique in American chiropractic education, and had absolutely none of the downside factors we encountered at other colleges. It was clear we had found the right chiropractic college from the moment we drove through the entrance. I could not imagine a more idyllic, picturesque setting in whichlo explore the health sciences and healing arts than the Logan campus.

Our introduction to students and faculty reflected real enthusiasm and unity of purpose. Throughout our tour, the interchange of idea's and knowledge was evident in the hallways, library, and even on the lawn under the belltower. I was further impressed by the cohesiveness displayed by all at Logan following the untimely death of one of the students due to a pulmonary embolism. This student had been a veteran, and the entire campus was adorned in miniature American flags as a commemorative to this individual. Here was a school with a heart and soul which extended beyond the classroom.

A remarkable feature of Logan is its magnificent new research center, which encompasses laboratories, cadaver and anatomy classes, along with the most expansive ergonomics research facility of any chiropractic college in the U.S. Logan is on the cutting edge of ergonomics technology and prospective chiropractic students with an inclination towards research could easily choose to attend Logan based solely upon Logan's progress in this area. On the practical side of chiropractic, Logan offers a broad clinical experience to its students through a network of outpatient clinics both on-campus and within the St. Louis area.

The on-campus facility was one of the largest, most up-to-date chiropractic clinics we had seen anywhere. From the range of techniques we observed, state-of-the-art adjusting and diagnostic equipment, and comments from students and patients alike provided unequivocal testimony to Logan's reputation for excellence in chiropractic care and training. Further exploration of the community around

Logan's campus revealed an outstanding environment for living, working and playing. St. Louis offers a tremendous variety of activities, and the overall modest cost-of-living here makes it an attractive value for budget I conscious students. Clearly, Logan was the chiropractic college of choice in America.

On balance, America has perhaps the most diverse cross-section of chiropractic colleges of any country in the world.' The good news is that with a bit of reflecting upon what things are important to you, its relatively easy to choose the right school, especially if you're armed with the knowledge which a campus visit provides. Your final decision is going to be an important one which will directly influence your future career as a professional chiropractor. Do your exploratory research first, then take time to visit if you can, validate your impressions and expectations, and decide, content in having made an informed choice based upon the facts.

Sue was photographed as she took part in a Careers Day program at St. Dominic High School in O'Fallon, Mo. She was shown as she discussed the Logan College catalogue with a student interested in a career in the health professions. The energetic Sue is a frequent visitor to high schools and colleges as she explains the benefits of a career in chiropractic and extolls the virtues of Logan College as a gateway to such a career.

Admissions Office: Thoughts from an incoming student ...

Admissions Office Active Dr. Robyn G. Wilkerson, Director of Admissions, and Carol Meyer, admissions advisor, traveled to Toronto, Canada, on March 9-11 for the annual meeting of admissions directors of chiropractic colleges. The meeting took place at the Toronto Prince Hotel. Plans were discussed for the joint sponsorship by the colleges of a breakfast meeting during the convention of the National Association of Advisors to the Health Professions in San Diego in June 1990.

Carol Meyer also represented Logan College from April 13-15 at a regional meeting of the NAAHP at the Bismarck Hotel in Chicago.

Dr. Wilkerson has announced that, beginning with candidates for admission 'to Logan College in September 1989, a personal interview will be required of each candidate. The interview can take place at Logan College or, if this is not feasible for ,the applicant, an interview with a Logan alumnus in the student's home

I am in the process of completing the admissions form and arranging for official transcripts to be forwarded. I anticipate submitting the completed application (for the class entering in September, 1991) in April of this year.

TV Newscast Features Work of Logan Students The 10 p.m. newscast of KSDK-TV, Channel 5, in St. Louis - the area's highest-rated television news program - recently carried a feature story on the many hours devoted by Logan College students in constructing a new chiropractic care center at the Salvation Army's Harbor Light facility.

The facility provides shelter for homeless men and women. Logan students, under the direction of Doug Stirrat, Director of Institutional Development, have spent many weekends, with the help of Salvation Army personnel, in doing virtually all the construction work on the fine new treatment center. Channel 5 reporter Jeff Fowler interviewed Stirrat and several of the Logan students for the TV feature.

Logan Faculty Papers at ICSM Three members of the Logan College faculty - Dr. Gary E. Sanders, Research Director; Dr. Donna M. Mannello, Instructor in Clinical Science and Research; and Dr. Patrick R. Maloney, Assistant Professor of Clinical Science Research - presented papers at the 1989 International Conference on Spinal Manipulation.

The Conference, sponsored by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education & Research, was held in Washington, D.C., on March 31-April 1.

During the same trip to Washington, Dr. Sanders attended a meeting of the steering committee of the Veterans Administration task force on chiropractic. The task force is conducting a nationwide study to measure the demand for and the cost and therapeutic benefits of chiropractic services provided under VA auspices. Dr. Sanders represents the Council on Chiropractic Education on the steering committee. He and the other chiropractic representatives - Dr. Alan Adams of Los Angeles Chiropracti~ College, the ACA representative; and Dr. Bernard Coyle of Palmer West College, the ICA representative - met with VA officials to discuss the progress of the major study.

Dr. Dennis P. Cronin, (01/78), was recently called upon to treat Andre Agazzi and Ivan Lend!, the No. 2 and No. 3 seeded men's tennis players in the world. During an exhibition match, Lend! was bothered by a recurring shoulder injury, Agazzi by a lower back problem. Not only did both compete, but both extolled the virtues of chiropractic as this was the first exposure for both players. Dr. Ramsey Meets With State Education Board Dr. William L. Ramsey, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Logan College, took part in a meeting of the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education, held at the University of Missouri-Columbia on April 1. The meeting discussed plans for future program approval and funding for institutions of higher education in Missouri. The Board has proposed that programs of both public and private institutions in the state be brought under its jurisdiction.

William R. Lilly Report Recently, Logan College of Chiropractic and the St. Louis Last Man's Club (a Special Forces Association), sponsored the William R. Lilly Sweetheart Memorial Dance. Alumni, faculty, students, and friends of Logan attended the successful event to benefit the Lilly Scholarship Fund and more importantly, to complete the construction of a Veteran's Memorial on the college campus.

Bill Lilly was a student at Logan who exemplified the sincere dedication and motivation to excel in chiropractic. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Mr. Lilly was instrumental in the reestablishment of the Logan Veteran's Association. Also, he was an active participant in various activities throughout Logan up until his sudden death.

Currently, plans for completion of the memorial are underway. Financial support to complete the memorial is greatly needed and appreciated. Dr. Venditti Continues Heavy Speaking Schedule Dr. Patrick P. Venditti, Director of the Logan College Ergonomics Center, continues to travel widely as a speaker much in demand by professional groups. Dr. Venditti recently spoke to the Work Capacities Network of Mercy Hospital in Chicago on "Ergonomics and Work Capacity Evaluations." He also has been invited to present a paper at a major annual scientific meeting, Challenge of the Lumbar Spine, to be held in November in San Francisco.

Logan Video Wins Award A Logan College student recruitment video tape recently won a "Merit Award" from District Six of the Council for the Advancement & Support of Education. CASE is an organization of development and public relations officials from hundreds of U.S. colleges and universities. A total of 533 entries was submitted by 79 institutions in the District Six competition. Logan's video tape, 11 minutes in length, was produced by Neff Productions of St. Lou is. It introduces prospective students to Logan College by focusing on the College's challenging curriculum, the professionalism of the Logan faculty and staff, and the beauty of the College's 103-acre campus.

Scoliosis Presentation At East Middle School In Alton, IL In an effort to promote the interest of chiropractic health care, Logan interns participated in a scoliosis presentation to seventh grade students of the East Middle School in Alton, Illinois. Jim Porter, a trimester five student, organized the event. The informative session consisted of a slide and overhead presentation as well as group discussions. The overall response by administrators and students was very enthusiastic!

Greek News Pl KAPPA CHI - The brothers of Pi Kappa Chi fraternity invite any and all students, teachers, and alumni members of the fraternity to visit their Hospitality Room at the Marriott during Homecoming. Michael Maggio, President, reports, "We are presently experiencing a period of new growth and development, and have several exciting projects planned for the coming year - to benefit both the community and the college: Our membership is up to 24 active members, we plan to increase that number by the end of the year." In addition, we are going to have an exchange trip with our brothers at Palmer College, which loolts like it will be a very entertaining experience."

OMEGA SIGMA PHI - This is the tenth anniversary of OSP, and the sisters are working on some really special plans for Homecoming. Unfortunately, records for the first few years are a little sketchy, and they are requesting help from alumnae. Specifically, they are interested in membership rosters, or whatever kind of records might be available in order to preserve this for posterity. Also, the sisters would like to have a special function for the founding members or whomever might be participating in their 10th Reunion, during Home-

Chi Rho Sigma The members of Chi Rho Sigma fraternity donated over $600 worth of x-ray models to the Radiology department from funds raised during Homecoming and other events. During the past year the members have been involved with many, many projects to help the college, the profession, and the community. As the largest Greek group, the Chi Rho Sigmas never fail to help out when called upon to do so. President, Dennis Hogan, trimester 9, and Vice President Trm Kosterman, are always on-campus doing "good things for mankind."

Among the activities in which they have been involved with monitoring the course and coordinating registration for the Health Run that was held on the campus early last year, worked on a variety of items for the Chesterfield Jamboree, including creating and finishing a "float," dressed up like "Mouseketeers," various Variety Club projects, assisted with monthly Chamber of Commerce socials, held a

"bake sale" during National Boards, offering breakfast and lunch for the weary students, co-sponsored a "Reggae Beach Party" - including a sandy beach, hot tubs, palm trees, and a live Reggae Band - aided with voter registration during civic elections, and generally became involved in virtually every volunteer project at the college and in the community. We appreciate and thank them for their efforts.

A Remarkable Contribution - California Style Dr. Kelly Doyle, Dr. Eric Tryggested, and Dr. Kevin Steen have graciously donated $30,000 to the classroom renovation program for the California Room! This impressive accomplishment was a challenge initiated by Dr. Doyle, whose two classmates enthusiastically joined him. Dr. Doyle felt that the contribution to Logan was a simple appreciation and respect for his alma mater: "In order for an institution to develop a cohesive network of alumni involvement, the alumni must create a solid foundation for support. This support is through financial gifts which benefit the aspiring chiropractic students." The gracious philanthropy is a remarkable accomplishment for these doctors. Dr. Doyle and his fellow peers reside in California, where they maintain successful private practices.

Abstracts regarding the Clinical Sciences and Basic Sciences (as related to practice) are invited for review. Submissions should be type written and no more than 250 words in length. Awards will be presented for the best paper from each of three categories: student, field practitioner, and college faculty. The International Chiropractic Academy on the Study of Back Pain formed in 1981 for the purpose of developing a clinically relevant research in the diagnosis and conservative management of spinal disorders and related disorders. The organization is directly affiliated with the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER). The academy presented its symposiums in conjunction with a chiropractic college having full accreditation with The Council on Chiropractic Education.
