Logan Board of Trustees Meets The Logan College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees met on Saturday, February 20, 1988 at the Sheraton WestPort Hotel.

FCE R Establishes "Researcher of the Year" Award The Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) recently announced its first annual Researcher of the Year award, which will be presented at the International Conference on Spinal Manipulation (ICSM), in Washington, DC, in early 1989.

Pete Bommarito, president of FCER, said, "the award is being established to acknowledge individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of chiropractic research and reflects FCER's commitment to the highest scientific standards of research."

FCER will finance the winner's attendance at the ICSM, at which the winner will receive an engraved plaque at a presentation ceremony held in his or her honor. In additon, FCER will make a $1,000 donation in the recipient's name to a charity or educational institution or scholarship fund designated by the winner.

Prior to each ICSM, Steve Wolk, Ph.D., FCER director of research, will compile a list of candidates who have already made significant contributions to the development of chiropractic research or who are currently prominent in the chiropractic ¡ research field. The FCER Research Committee will evaluate the candidates' credentials and make recommendations to FCER's Board of Trustees. The Board will select the winner at its mid-winter meeting.

Erratum The editor extends a sincere apology to Dr. Ronald Harris ('66) for the omission of his name in the last issue of the "Tower" in the article on Homecoming Awards, page 9. In 1986, Dr. Harris was the recipient of the "Heritage Award," the highest award given by the Alumni Association for outstanding service to the College and the profession. In the final publication, Dr. Harris' name was inadvertently deleted from the list of the honorees, and we are extremely sorry for the error.

In Memoriam The College was saddened to receive word that Dr. Donald Zisch (03/57) died unexpectedly of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 6, 1988. Dr. Zisch , of Denver, Colorado had been active in the profession and the Logan Alumni Association, where he served as Presi dent in 1976-1977. He will be greatly missed by all who benet1ted trom knowing him.

The 1988 Alumni-Student Golf Tournament, which Dr. Zisch had helped to sponsor, will be renamed in his honor and called the "Don E. Zisch, D.C., Memorial Golf Tournament."

Dr. Zisch is survived by his wife, Vesta, and sons Donald and Philip. The family has asked that memorials be made to the Logan College of Ch iropractic Research Fund. The family address is 7178 A Vine Circle East, Littleton, CO 80122. The College extends our most sincere condolences.

Omega Sigma Phi Donates Funds The members of Omega Sigma Phi Sorority recently held a raffle to raise funds for the Kentuckiana Chi ldren's Home in Kentucky. President of the sorority, Misty Paul, and treasurer, Jill Hughes, sent a check for $100 to Dr. Lorraine Golden, in support of her ongoing efforts and education of the handicapped at Kentuckiana.

FCER Compares Chiropractic, Medical and Osteopathic Treatment Costs in Worker's Compensation Cases The Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER), with the cooperation of the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security, Division of Worker's Compensation, recently completed a comprehensive analysis of Florida's workers' compensation claims for back-related in juries. The analysis compares the cost of treatment for patients of chiropractic, medical, and osteopathic doctors, and includes the costs of both hospital and non - hospital services for back-related injuries.

In a letter to FCER, Dr. Ronald L. Harris, Executive Vice President of the American Chiropractic Association, said, "I believe this study is by far the most comprehensive and scholarly report on worker's compensation back injuries ever produced by any chiropractic agency."

Steve Wolk, Ph .D., FCER director of research , said rigid guidelines were established for both the data that were requested from the state of Florida and the statistical analysis which followed. He noted that similar studies have been criticized because they relied on selective and questionable sampling procedures. " I' m confident that these findings are exceptionally unbiased and comprehensive and will endure the most careful scruriny," stated Dr. Wolk.

Data for this analysis were compiled from all cases reported to the state of Florida during its 1985-1986fiscal year.

The analysis covered the costs of all major diagnostic and treatment procedures and hospital services by type of physi cian. Analysis also compared surgical and non-surgical costs.

Highlights from the study's findings include : • Chiropractic patients had the lowest rate of incurring compensable injuries when compared to medical or osteopathic patients.

Of all patients with back-related injuries (N = 52,091 ), including those who may have required surgery, 33 .0% had compensable injuries. fiowever, the percentage of patients wffu incurred a compensable injury varied significantly by service provider: 36.1 % for medical doctors' patients; 26.2% for osteopaths' patients; and 20.5% for chiropractors' patients. These differences held as well for the patient groups when surgery was excluded .

• Of the patients who incurred compensable injuries, chiropractic patients were less likely to be hospitalized for treatment.

This finding held for claimant groups that did and did not include patients who underwent surgery. For both surgery and non-surgery groups, 23.2% of chiropractic patients with compensable injuries were hospitalized. For medical patients (groups including surgery)-57.7% were hospitalized , (nonsurgery)-56.0%; for osteopathic patients (groups including surgery)-49.3% were hospitalized, and (non-surgery)-48.9% were hospitalized.

• When the average number of services and average cost per service were compared, chiropractic care represented a relatively cost-effective approach to the management of work-related back injuries.

For the claimant group which included surgery patients, the following findings were noteworthy: (a) For nonhospital treatment, chiropractors received the highest average (mean) payment per patient ($486) compared to osteopaths ($155) and medical doctors ($343). However, chiropractors provided a much greater average number of services per patient (29) than osteopaths (8) or medical doctors (14).

Furthermore, the average paid per service was lowest for chiropractors ($16.31) compared to osteopaths ($18.40) or medical doctors ($23.87).

The average cost for hospitalized patients varied significantly by provider.

The average cost of hospital services for patients of medical doctors was $3,640; for patients of chiropractors-$1,503; and for osteopathic patients-$1 ,973.

The total cost of all treatment including hospital and nonhospital services was $52 million . Of this total , medical treatment accounted for 88.7% ($45 .5 million), or $1,100 per patient; chiropractic treatment accounted for 10.1% (5.2 million), or $558 per patient; and osteopathic treatment accounted for 1.1%($0.58 million) , or $411 per patient.

When surgery patients were excluded (1,695 required surgery), the comparative differences among the three doctor groups again held.

Health Professions Report Number of Solo Practitioners Increasing in Chiropractic The average chiropractor in 1986 was 37 years old, worked more than 50 hours a week and for himself, and had a gross income of over $132,000 a y~ar, according to a survey of chiropractor characteristics by the American Chiropractic Association.

The survey found that the med ian gross income for chiropractors was $132,250 in 1986- a 20% increase over 1984 figures. The median net income rose to $60,500 in 1986- a 19% hike over 1984. The survey also found that the average chiropractor is 37. 6 years old, graduated from a chiropractic co llege at 27.4 years of age, and 16% of all chiropractors are female, up from 8% and 3% in 1975.

Other survey findings: •Most chiropractors (52%) work in communities with 50,000 or more people.

•The typical chiropractor has an average work-week of 50.5 hours.

•89% of active chiropractors worked full-time in 1987- a 2% decline from 1986.

•The proportion of chiropractors in solo practice rose in 1987 to 70.2%, about a 2% jump over 1986.

•The average chiropractor's income comes from these sources: private insurance (48%) , cash from patients (32%) , ' workers' compensation (13%), Medicare (6%), and Medicaid (1 %). In 1972, 71% of a chiropractor's income came from cash from patients.

•9.7% of chiropractors in 1987 felt there were too few of them , down from 40% in 1975. 28% of chiropractors felt there was too many of them , up from 8% in 1975.

Dr. Thomas Gelardi and William Volk Address CCE Board of Directors at CCE Annual Meeting on January 30, 1988 Upon the invitation of the president, Dr. Beatrice Hagen, of the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), Dr. Thomas Gelardi, the president of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic and Dr. William Volk, the president of Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic made a presentation to the Board on Saturday afternoon, January 30, 1988. President Gelardi and President Volk described their approaches to chiropractic and to chiropractic education, and urged CCE to modify its Educational Standards in order to accommodate their views.

After their presentations, there was a question and answer session at which there was further exchange of views.

At the same meeting, the CCE Board of Directors passed a resolution which indicated: "That the new incoming president of the CCE appoint a task force to meet with Dr. Thomas A. Celardi and Dr. William Volk, or their designees, for the purpose of attempting to resolve the differences which have resulted in lack of participation by Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic and the Pennsylvania College of Straight Chiropractic in the CCE 's accreditation process. This task force is to be appointed by the president of the CCE as is appropriate to the circumstances.

In addition, the two college presidents or their designees were invited to attend the next council meeting which will be held in San Diego, California on January 22-29, 1989. They were also invited to attend the CCE panel and task force meetings which are held throughout that week.

The Commission on Accreditation The Commission chairman, Dr. Patrick H. Sullivan, Jr. , announced the following appointments to the CCE's Commission on Accreditation for three year terms : 1. Matthew Givrad, Ph.D., for a second term by the CCE chiropractic colleges as an institutional member.

2. Meredith Gonyea, Ph .~ ., by the CCE Board as a public mem & r to replace William Fuller, Ed.D. , who left in August, 1987.

3. John Hemauer, D.C., by the American Chiropractic Association, sponsoring national organization.

4. Valerio A. Pasqua, D.C., by the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards, sponsoring national q rgan-

ization.

The Commission adopted resolutions recognizing both Ors. James Walker and Franklin Schoenholtz upon the completion of their service with the Commission and the CCE for their contribution to quality chiropractic education and accreditation . During the annual meeting, the Commission heard progress reports from 18 chiropractic colleges and held a hearing on status for one institution.

Chairman Sullivan reported that Commission evaluation teams had visited three chiropractic colleges during the 1987 year, and that a team chairperson workshop was held in October, 1987, to introduce the team chairpersons to the revision in the evaluation of team visit procedure. Since a more comprehensive breadth of personnel on Commission teams now includes both chiropractors and non-chiropractors who participate in both the academic situation and the field experience, a revision of the procedures and format became necessary. The new format for teams requires the use of a: chairpersonadministrator; finance person ; practicing doctor of chiropractic ; basic science/research person; clinic science and research person from a chiropractic college; and a person in the clinical area with experience in clinic-managementpractice in postgraduates programs at the chiropractic college; the latter person is also involved in field practice . The revision to the procedure requires that (a) the body of each section of the team report should continue to have an introductory narrative, and (b) a review of the CCE Standards should be made on a criterion-by-criterion basis. Both the narrative section and the college strengths and concerns are tied to the specific CCE Standards criteria subsets.

Commission guests from sister Commissions on Accreditation holding reciprocal status with the CCE (USA) included : Dr. Maureen P. Henderson; Dr. William S. Baird; Dr. David I. West, all representing CCE (Canada) and Dr. Andries M. Kleynhans, representing the Australasian Council on Chiropractic Education.

In 1987 the Commission issued a document entitled Trustee Guidelines. The guidelines were developed by former Commissioner Dr. Franklin Schoenholtz as document which could be considered for use by chiropractic institu-

tions.

The Commission drafted an interpretation of the CCE policy on English and foreign languages. After due consideration and review of the statement, the draft interpretation was submitted to the member college presidents and admissions directors for discussio n and then added to the CCE agenda fo r consideration by the CCE Board of Directors.

In order to maintain its consistency in the development of status resolutio ns concerning chiropractic colleges as developed by Commission members, a model was developed to maintai n the quality of the resolutions .

The Commission received an analysis of a four-part validity and reli abil ity stud y of the CCE/COA purposes, standard s and the accreditation process . The Commission reviewed th e second part of the validity reliability project w hich dealt with the accreditation process . It was determined that the accreditation process and the components of accreditation review were worki ng we ll w ith recommendations to maintai n co ntinuity of the procedures now in process.

The current state of the appeal procedure as it relates to adverse Com mission decisions for chiropactic co lleges was considered . As a resul t, the Commission submitted a proposed revision to appeal process to the Cou nci l at the January, 1988 meeting. The Commission also submitted a revision to the CCE complaint procedures that can be brought against chiropractic co lleges.

The purpose of the revisions w as primarilyto expedite the process an d allow for swifter decisions regard ing the institutions.

The Commission also appointed a committee charged with the responsibili ty of developing a comprehensive annual institutional progress report format procedure. The data collection instrument's purpose would be: 1. To gather aggregate data about the chiropractic colleges in the United States, which could be used on a public basis. These data would also be collected for demographic and informational purposes for public consumption .

2. Provide an on-going analysis of the institutions by compiling these data, so that (a) the Commission could be apprised of the comparative data development of the institutions, and (b) the data would serve the needs of outcomes assessment.

Board Member Profile- S. G. Brinkley, D.C.

Dr. S. G. Brinkley is one of the most recent additions to the Logan College Board of Trustees. He graduated from Logan in 1968 with his B.S. and D.C. degrees. Continuing his post doctoral training, Dr. Brinkley became board certified in orthopedics in 1976. Since 1968 he has been a member of the Illinois Chiropractic Society, serving in numerous capacities including chairman of the legislative committee and chairman of the board of directors. Furthermore, Dr. Brinkley, a member of the ACA since 1968, has acted as the downstate Illinois delegate to the association since 1983. Rounding out his extensive list of credential_s, is the fact that Dr. Brinkley was appointed by successive Governors to two consecutive 4 year terms on the Illinois State Medical Disciplinary Board. He served as chairman of the disciplinary board from 1983 to 1984. A highlight in Dr. Brinkley's career came in 1976 when he was chosen as "Chiropractor of the Year" by the Illinois Chiropractic Society.

While maintaining a busy practice as well as an active professional and community involvement, Dr. Brinkley has been married to his wife Linda since 1960. They1have\three children. An interesting side note is that Dr. Brinkley has been associated in practice with his father-in-law, Dr. Blair Alden, for the past 10 years. Most of Dr. Brinkley's spare time over the past 20 years has been spent in activities relative to the profession in working with the Illinois Chiropractic Society and the American

Chiropractic Association. However, he mentions that he also has a love of auto racing . "I did do considerable racing when I was younger, but now confine my activities to that of a spectator and attend 2 or 3 races each year. I do have almost every issue of Road and Track and Motor Trend Magazine going back to 1950, so I guess one might say this is my only hobby."

Concerning his new appointment, Dr. Brinkley expresses the following : "Needless to say I consider it a great honor to be asked to sit on the Board of Trustees of Logan. I am extremely proud of the tremendous strides the college has made over the past 20 years and its continued striving to do better. I certainly urge all members of the alumni to visit the campus when they have the opportunity. The annual homecoming and class reunion this summer would be an excellent time."

The Tower recognizes and applauds Dr. Brinkley for his dedication to chiropractic, and wishes to express the pride which the Logan Community takes in having him on the Board.

Meet Your Alumni Board Dr. Eloise Heintzkill Dr. Eloise Heintzkill is a 1947 graduate of Logan. When her youngest brother at age 2V2 was given up to die with 48 hours, he was taken to a chiropractor and is alive and well today. Seeing the recovery of her brother began her interest in chiropractic.

When she went to Logan, she was planning on being a chiropractic assistant, but Dr. Gretchen Schreffler, currently a trustee of Logan College of Chiropractic, convinced her to finish the "Doctor's course," and this is what she did.

While at Logan , she met and married Dr. John Heintz kill who is past president of the Logan Alumni Association and a trustee on Logan's Board. Dr. Eloise and Dr. John have five children: Barbara married a dentist; Mark is a chiropractor; Jan married a chiropractor; John is studying electronics; and Paul is in a pre-chiropractic program.

Dr. Eloise has practiced for 26 years, 17 of those full time. She has been active in the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association and has been on committees and held offices including being president for the North East District. Over the years she has been involved in numerous church and civic activities. " Being on the board of directors of the Logan Alumni Association," commented Dr. Eloise, " is bringing many aspects of my life into better focus. I would like to see every student, every chiropractor and all their families, and Logan College experience the very best chiropractic has to offer in the triangle of life. -To see our alumni as the very foundation for the greatest health care available in America . -To hear the name of Logan College as the best in education, science, research, and professionalism.

Alumni News George W. Chirkinian, D.C., 9/78, has recently been elected President Elect of the Virginia Chiropractic Association.

In 1978, Dr. Chirkinian was awarded a Meritorious Service Award by the American Chiropracticl Association (ACA). He was also t'fie "Virginia Chiropractor of the Year" in 1986. Dr. Chirkinian is a registered lobbyist for the VCA. Susan Hirsch-Starr, D.C., 1/80, is pleased to announce the birth of her second daughter, Alexandra Rae Starr on January 24, 1988.

Dr. Ron Peak Dr. Ron Peak graduated from Logan in 1969 and taught for one year at Logan in the chemistry department.

He started his own practice in New Jersey in late 1970 and has been in fu II time practice ever since. He has supported Logan College as well as his state and national chiropractic organizations.

Dr. Peak and his wife, Pat, have been involved in many community projects.

They have a son, Brian. Along with his family, Dr. Peak is an avid bicyclist and is an active member in several local bicycling organizations.

Dr. Peak has a special interest in retaining and expanding the chiropractic philosophy taught in chiropractic colleges, especially Logan . "I believe," stated Dr. Peak, " that prospective chiropractors must study and learn the philosophy of chiropractic. They must learn 'why' to adjust as well as 'how' to adjust, and they will provide a tremendous service to others. "

Alumni Board Members Speak to Students On Friday February 19, 1988 several board members of the Logan Alumni Association were on campus to address Trimesters 2,3,4,5, and 6 students on chiropractic philosophy. The participating board members were: Ors. Anthony Bilott (9/81) of Pennsylvania, Allen Chamberlain (1 /69) ofTennessee, John Dudley (9/72) of North Carolina, June Hultine (9/43) of Wisconsin , Ronald Peak (1 /69) of New Jersey, George Richards (9/79) of Ohio, and Larry Steele (1 /64) of Indiana. The program was coordinated through the Chiropractic Science Division and the efforts of Drs . Ralph Filson, Chairman, and Ralph Barrale . Participating faculty members included Ors. Bob Diamond, Elmer Hawkinson, Delaine Hayes, and Mike Wittmer.

Congratulations are in order to Dr. Robin (04/86) and Dr. Jeffrey Hunter (08/85) of Ohio, on the birth of their child, Marshall Lee Hunter. Marshall was born March 24, 1988, and weighed in at an impressive 9 lbs. 5 oz. Both Mom and baby are doing fine. Dr. Robin plans to stay at home for awhile with the baby. Alumni Association Sponsors Student Programs The Alumni Association hosted the second Student Breakfast Bar on April 12, 1988, in the cafeteria during final exams.

Administration , faculty and staff at the College were invited to partici pate as well.The students were receptive to the idea as it provided an opportunity for a little relaxation during a very stressful time. The course load is very heavy and it makes the students aware of the support and good wishes from the fie ld .

Another area of support in progress is the selection and awarding of six $500 STAR scholarships. The STAR (Send To Alumni Regularly) program now has $34,500 in a scholarship fund in whi ch the interest is awarded each year at homecoming to deserving stu dents. Applications are available in the Fin ancial Aid Office on campus. Th e applicants are required to have a letter of reco mmendation from an Alumni Associatio n member. Selection will be completed by participating staff and faculty on campus and the awards will be made at the Homecoming Awards Ban quet on June 18, 1988 at the St. Louis Marriott Airpo rt Hotel.

Applications for the Logan Alu mni Clinician Award have been submitted to the Alumni Office and are being forwarded to the Committee for selection . The Alumni Clinician Award is a $1,000 cash award given at graduation to a deserving doctor for outstanding clinical and professional performance. The ninety-fifth commencement exercises will be held on April 16, 1988 at the Sheld o n Concert Hall located at 3648 Washington Avenue in St. Louis. The Alumni President, Dr. Ivar Sorenson, will make the presentation of the Logan Alumni Clinician Award.

Student Education Enhanced Through Teaching at Local Community College Mr. Guy Dauphin, Associate Professor of Basic Science, has been teaching Anatomy and Physiology at Meramec Community College, one of three area campuses of St. Louis Community College, for the past ten years. Over the years, Dauphin realized that his classes might be enhanced through the utilization of Logan students, and their expertise in the neuromusculoskeletal system .

Mr. Dauphin checked with the Meramec and Logan administrations and received permission to seek Logan student volunteers to serve as Teaching Assistants. Students who are typically in trimesters 8, 9, 10, and have excelled in a particular area, help in teaching the skeletal system using x-rays as teaching tools.

Each semester Dauphin chooses several students to assist him. The classes they are teaching are made up of students in the fields of nursing, pre-chiropractic, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, and dental hygiene. The classes are split into groups, and each student works with a different group. Current students serving as assistants are Tim Kosterman , Frederick Goodman, Lucy Rambacher, and Jerry Nastasia, Jr. Comments from the Logan students are that it is an excellent opportunity to interact with other people who are learning and going through a {iifficult educational process, and servy s to increase their personal knowledge.

Health Care Colloquium Held Entitled "An Interdisciplinary Conference on Current Health Care Issues," Logan College hosted a group of health care professionals who presented a series of topics rel ated to hea lth care issues of the 80' s. The program, held on Thursday, February 18, 1988, is the first in a series of presentation s which will be held . The objective is to provide a multi-disciplinary forum to discuss current health care issues. Participants in the forum included faculty from Logan College and St. Louis University.

The Colloquium was the result of the efforts of Monica Smith, D.C. , Gary Sanders, Ph.D. , and Larry Hutti , D.C. Dr. Smith is currently enrolled at St. Louis University, Center for Health Services Education and Research , in a Doctoral program in Health Services Research. She anticipates completing her Ph.D. in 1990, and then taking additional courses to obtain a Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree as well . Smith remarked that she felt a need for better communications between the chiropractic profession and other health services professionals. The program in which she is enrolled is under th e advisement of James Romeis, Ph .D. and is made up of professionals with widely diverse backgrounds and experience.

Beatrice Hagen, D.C. , F.l.C.C., President, welcomed the group and introduced Gary Sanders, Ph .D. , of the Logan faculty, who introduced the speakers. Following are the speakers and the topics they covered .

Gengenbach, both Logan College Faculty members, were named as the " on-call" Chiropractors fo r Michael Jackson's World Tour when it came to St. Louis, Missouri . "The local event coordinator called about six days in advance, and stated the Tour had requested two chiropractors to be on call for potential treatment of Michael and the members of his group, '. ' said Dr. Gengenbach. "They wanted someone well versed in the treatment of athletic and dance injuries, as well as som eone trained in deep muscle the rapy ." (Dr. Gengenbach is a Certified Chi ropractic Sports Physician and Dr. Sim pson is a candidate for certification in teach ing Nimmo technique.) " It's a real switch ," said Dr. Simpson, "when performers call ahead for potential ch iropractic care instead of just ambulances. It' s a good sign for the profession ."

Monica Smith, D.C., who is currently working on a Ph.D. at St. Louis University, was instrumental in organizing the first session . Other programs will be held in the near future, with other professionals covering various relevant topics.

Student Doctors Council Presents Annual SOC Awards Day Program Once each year the Student Doctors Council (SOC) at Logan College holds an awards ceremony to recognize individuals who excelled during the year.

Those recognized included fellow students, faculty, staff, and administration.

This year Ross Weinberg (Trimester 8) served admirably as emcee for the event, and provided lively banter throughout the ceremony.

A special highlight to this year's program was .a student talent show. It once again reminded us thatthere is a wide range of superior talent running rampant on the Logan campus, and the six acts provided lively entertainment during the presentation of awards.

The first award presented was for individuals who helped out with the SOC Monte Carlo Night which netted some $800. Terry Viviano was recognized for coo~dinating the event. Shirley Fisk, of Mantz Travel in Chesterfield, was given an award for their contribution of a mi.ni-vacation, which was the grand prize of the evening. "Luci lies," a local restaurant was recognized for their contribution of food and games. Finally, Dr. Allen Parry, Director of the Logan Postdoctoral Department, was acknowledged for his assistance as sponsor.

Next Bernie Sirois and Brian Robbins were awarded for their coordination of Field Day. Barb Yarrow, of the College Food Service Company, Service America, received an award for her outstanding efforts to improve the quality and variety of food in the cafeteria.

Nancy Youn g was honored for services to the Community Health Center, Steve W al ker for the Montgomery Center, and Jose Garcia for the Dellwood Center.

The most significant award s given are those honoring faculty, staff, and administrative personnel for their untiring efforts and service to our stud ent body.

All SOC members nominate and vote on these awards, which are given one time per year. The "Staff Person of the Year" award was presented to Mrs. Michelle Gelven of the Cafeteria. Dr. Donald Christy, Director of Admissions and Student Services, was once again named "Administrator of the Year," while another annual favorite, Dr. Norman Kettner, was named "Faculty Member of the Year."

The final award, the "SOC President's Award," for untiring service to the college, the students, the community, and profession was presented to Mrs. Sue Fredericks, Coordinator of Promotional Affairs.

Outgoing President, Don Metrejon , thanked the students and members of the SOC for all the help he had received during his tenure. The candidates for this year were announced by Ross Weinberg, followed by the announcement that Ezra Edgerton had been chosen the winner of the $100 Bookstore Certificate for his singing of a song he composed about the College.

95th Commencement Held The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, M issouri was the site for the 95th commencement for Logan College, where sixty doctors of chiropractic were welcomed into the profession. Family and friends gathered to observe, as the Nouvelle Quartet began the ceremony with the traditional 11 Pomp and Circumstance" by Elgar. One of the graduating doctor, Norman Gifford, led the 11 Pledge of Allegiance 11 while Robert Copp, a Logan student and brother of one of the graduates, sang the National Anthem. Paul Barger, another graduating student, gave the invocation.

Dr. Norman Kettner, Chairman of the Radiology Department, performed as master of ceremonies, and welcomed the graduates, guests, and speakers.

Following a moving address by the college President,¡ Dr. Beatrice Hagen, Dr. James M. Sigafoose, the keynote speaker, addressed the group.

After Dr. Sigafoose's thoughtful address, various honors and awards were presented. Immediately following the presentation of honors by Vice President of Chiropractic Affairs, Dr. George Goodman, and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. William Ramsey, Dr. Gordon Toftness, Chairman of the Logan Board of Trustees, joined President Hagen in the academic hooding of the graduates. President Hagen conferred the degree, Doctor of Chiropractic and Dr. Ivar Sorenson, Alumni President, led the group in the Chiropractic Oath.

A Benediction was given by Dr. Rex Lee Farrer, one of the graduates, followed by a Recessional. Everyone was invited to participate in a reception which followed the ceremony.

Dr. James Si~afoose Welcomes Graduates Into Chiropractic s Family at 95th Commencement Dr. James Sigafoose, a nationally recognized lecturer and graduate of National College of Chiropractic, opened his commencement address with the remark to the graduates that, "It is a tremendous thrill to be here to see this new group being born into the community of chiropractic. Doctors, we need you now more than ever. We need you to help in sharing our special knowledge and abilities with the world."

Dr. Sigafoose shared some of his personal experiences with the group, and highlighted the importance of understanding and compassion. He challenged the group to remember that they would have many opportunities to share people's pain, which gives them a

unique responsibility towa rd all of mankind. 11 Young doctors today, 11 said Sigafoose, 11 have boundless opportunities to become major influences on our nation's health care. This was not always the case. 11 11 We are all a _part of a family now," Sigafoosecontinued, 11the great familyof chiropractic. Give all you have to give, and you will get in direct proportion."

To close, Dr. James Sigafoose congratulated the graduates and thanked them for inviting him to share in this special occasion. Hagen Passes on the Torch to New Graduates to Carry Forward Logan's Traditions At each commencement, Dr. Beatrice Hagen, F.l.C.C., President, attempts to share some of her personal fee lings about chiropractic with the graduates and their guests, offering a uniquely personal touch to the ceremony. Hagen, who has been involved with Logan College since the earliest days, has given greatly of herself to the College and the profession. She is ever mindful that the future strength of any profession begins at the colleges and universi ~ es, and that any profession will be onl, as good as those new individuals who enter into it.

Dr. Hagen thanked the spouses, parents, children , and significant others for supporting their student- both financially and emotionally- throughout their entire educational program. However, she remarked , " They will need your support more now than ever. J he

rigorous academic pursuit is over-now they move on to the lessons of life.

Without your encouragement, they might not have made it to th is point, and without this same support, their new endeavors w ill be yet more of a chal lenge."

Today 's students have advanced facilities in which to learn the art, science, and philosophy of chiropractic, unlike those of the past. Yet, Dr. Hagen continued, "We must not dilute chiropractic with that which is not chiropractic."

Having attended the graduate's banquet, Dr. Hagen commented on the appropriateness o.f their theme-"The End Is The Beginning. " These words summarized her feelings, and she ended, "From the past, we pass along the torch to you to carry on our traditions, and to uphold our philosophy and beliefs."

Student Clinic Update In an effort to improve and build upon the foundation of the Student Health Center, certain changes in format have been instituted, as well as the addition of staff members. Dr. Doris Bell, Administrative Director of the Student Health Center, emphasizes that, "We are trying to make it a more one-on-one type of situation . With the addition of some of the newer faculty, this has been accomplished to some degree."

One of the " newer" faces encountered around the student clinic since September, 1987, is Dr. William Whittley, Director of Student Health Services. Dr. Whittley, who is from Australia, graduated from Logan College in 1973. He practiced in Illinois for eight years before completing a radiology residency at Los Angeles Chiropractic College.

Currently, Dr. Whittley has completed half of his DA1BCR (Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Roentgenology) and sat for the remainder of the Board in late March, 1988. Possessing such expertise, Dr. Whittley is a unique asset to the student clinic .

Dr. Whittleyviewsthestudentclinicasa potentially " pivotal" part of the student's career. He perceives one of the main objectives of the clinic to be getting " the student to the point of treating versus non specific adjusting. " The development of treatment protocols with specific strategies must accompany the emphasis on practicing technique. Certainly, as Dr. Bell notes, students do need to refine their fundamental skills in the core techniques.

Dr. Whittley suggests that students adopt a broad perspective of putting the variety of techniques under the umbrella of chiropractic, and not just focusing on one technique. Another idea which he would like to see implemented involves local field doctors volunteering a small amount of their time to the student clinic. Not only would they be contributing their experience, but they would learn about what is going on at the educational level. He notes, " Of course, this is not \ for everybody."

Two other faculty members integral to the Student Health Center include Dr. Margaret Duwe and Dr. Cindy Simpson, both Logan graduates, Class of August, 1985. In addition to their teaching

responsibilities, both faculty members are presently in private practice. Dr. Duwe' s specialty is in applied Kinesiology, and she is currently working toward a Diplomate status in this area.

Dr. Duwe holds a B.S. in education, and is quick to comment that she "enjoys teaching-especially chiropractic." Dr. Simpson, who has also pursued postdoctoral studies, is now awaiting a formal reply for her Nimmo Teaching Status certification.

Considering the wide variety of specialities represented by the full-time faculty, it is clear that the student clinic offers emerging chiropractors a wealth of experience. To add to this, there are part-time faculty members including Ors. Kitty Conway, Elmer Hawkinson , and Brian Snyder.

Afternoon conferences, involving all clinic directors are held with student interns. Clinic cases are discussed incorporating material on differential diagnosis, x-ray and chiropractic correlations, and case management. For exampie, one week the focus was on knee injuries. Here, in an open forum , clinic directors and students discussed differentials, x-ray findings , and biomechanical etiologies for a variety of case presentations. Another week, the group led by Dr. Whittley discussed x-ray films.

These conferences utilize an open discussion format, with an exchange of ideas and Comp Board preparation in mind.

Recently the Trimester S's have become part of the new program. Not only do they sit in on standard lectures and observe a certain number of adjustments, but they now receive the opportunity to practice actual adjusting under the direct supervision of clinic directors . These programs are also designed with the intention of helping students refine their palpation skills earlier in their Logan career.

Dr. Bell, recognizing the need for personalized instruction in the student clin ic, would like to see even more faculty members added in the future, in order to accommodate the Trimester 5, 6 and 7' s. She summarized, " Our primary goal is to give students the opportunity to practice those skills which they have obtained in the classroom .... "

Guest Lectures

Several hundred students attended a special guest lecture provided by the noted author and teacher, Dr. Terry Yochum . At the invitation of Dr. Norman Kettner, Dr. Yochum del ivered the topic " Skeletal Stress Manifestations in the Athlete." He emphasized fam iliarity with a wide variety of stresses incurred in the performance of various ath letic endeavors. Dr. Yochum presented the roentgen features of each injury sh owing how altered stress transmission and pathomechanics promote the generation of skeletal injury.

At the completion of his presentatio n, Dr . Yochum provided a histor ical perspective on the life and career of the eminent chiropractic educator, radiologist, and former President of National Col lege, Dr. Joseph Janse . Thi s interesting presentation provided a sense of chiropractic history to all those in attendance.

Homecoming Special Free, computerized literature searches will be available on Thursday, June 16 of Homecoming week. The "Most M ahvelous" Library at Logan College will be offering this service during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Alumni are encouraged to bring their subjecheq~ts in for a go on the computer. A variety of subject data bases are available, but in general, chiropractic is not included .

Faculty Member Feature: Dr. Gary Sanders

Preferring a low profile and ivy league style apparel , Gary Sanders, Ph.D., functions both as academician and as Assistant Director of Research at Logan College. In 1987, he was one of six researchers nationwide to be named "Chiropractic Scientific Researcher of the Year" by the International Chiropractor's Association (ICA) . Dr .

Sanders, a man of dry wit and relaxed manner, certainly offers much to Logan in the way of expertise.

Born in Mount Vernon, Illinois, Sanders attended Murray State University in Kentucky, where he graduated in 1977 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry. It was there that he met his wife, Janice. Sanders went on to work at St. Louis University in pathology, and was awarded his diploma in 1984. His Ph .D. work involved studying the immunology and pathogenosis of chronic viral liver disease, focusing on patients with Hepatitis Blinfections.

Dr. Sanders remembers always having an interest in science. In the summer of his sixteenth year, he started work as a lab technician at the local hospital in Mount Vernon. Downplaying his attraction to science, Sanders quipped , "when you worked in a hospital it was always air-conditioned and clean, and you didn't have to work very hard , and got to wear a white coat. People think it's real impressive when you work in a hospital for a lab, and they don't know that you wash test tubes."

By the time he was a senior in high school, Sanders was essentially working as a medical technologist. In college, he hadl a highly paid job working in the health center because of his clinical experience . His lab work also included three years at Barnes Hospital. It was while employed at Barnes that Sanders made his first contact with chiropractic.

His job entailed looking through a microscope six plus hours per day, and he devoloped headaches as a result. A colleague working there with Sanders happened to be a chiropractic student.

He offered to help, and after receiving adjustments, Sander's \ eadaches immediately went away.

Research first became a focus in Sanders life during his years at Murray State. He learned research methodology under the tutelage of Dr. Robert Daniels, who was a professor of Biology. In retrospect, Sanders now regards Daniels as his mentor. They studied the effects of pure

tetrahydrocannabniol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, on prokaryote and eukaryote DNA, RNA, protein, and lipid synthesis. Sanders recalls that the research was interesting and it was published, but the funny thing was that "three fourths of the science building thought I was a 'narc.' Each month the THC was received from the government, which nobody knew. I had to fill out the control inventory and send it to the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs reporting how much was used and how much was spilled. Each Friday, I would drop off the inventory and file the report, and all the people in the biology department would see ... " Dr. Sanders, who has fourteen publications to his credit, describes some of the work he did back in 1981 at St. Louis University. There, along with one of the clinical chemists, he developed a method to isolate and quantitate high density lipoproteins (H DLS) . It was used as the standard method for several years at SLU, in their cardiac unit.

After completing his Ph.D. program at SLU, Dr.Sanders did a two year postdoctoral fellowship with the Veterans Administration through the Department of Research. This, in turn , led to a research position at the Veterans Administration . In 1985, he became a Logan College faculty member. Asked why he pursued work at Logan, Dr.Sanders responded , "Better opportunity. And if you're into research, research is research . Where would you rather sell a refrigerator, in Alaska or in the desert? Chiropractic is sort of a desert for research . Like Mastercard, the possibilities are unlimited."

Initially Sanders, who was hired as an instructor in the Clinical Science Division, replaced a faculty member who left in the middle of a trimester. At that time, his teaching responsibilities included cardiology, gastrointestinal , urogenital, physiology lab, and endocrinology.

Since then, as was mentioned, he has been appointed Assistant Director of Research, and his load has been reduced to endocrinology and laboratory diagnosis II. The latter happens to be his favorite course to teach. As he noted , " It is what I teach the best, because it is what I know the most about."

Since January, 1988, Dr. Sanders has written two research grant proposals which have been submitted to the Foundation for Chiropractic Education

and Research (FCER) forfunding. One of the proposals centered around the effects of chiropractic manipu lation on patients with disc bulges sh own on MRI .

The other, co-developed with Dr. Bert Hanicke for Nutradyne, investigates the effect of glysine conjugated magnesium on blood pressure.

In addition, Dr. Sanders is currently involved in the process of applying for a National Institute of Health (NIH) research development grant . This could provide " seed money" or start up money for an institution, like Logan, which is not typically associated w ith research. If selected for the grant, th is would allow Logan to develop a " history of productivity" which w ould facilitate procurement of future grants.

Furthermore, Sanders was designated by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) as its represen tative to the federally funded Veteran's Adm inistration research project on chi ropractic.

Obviously, Dr. Gary San ders is a tremendous asset to Logan College, by virtue of his wealth of experience w ith clinical research . Conce rning the future of chiropractic research , he remarked, " If you want chiropractic research ers, you will have to train them .. . they are not born. Every other discipline trains it's own .11 • Finally, when asked how he prefers th e alumni and student body to view him, Dr. Sanders said , "As a person who has never forgotten w hat it is like to be a student. I've been a student longer than anybody here ... and until I' ve taught for twenty-five years, I' ll always be a student first. "

Williams Prepares for Summer Olymics as Virgin Island's Marathoner and Tearn Physician Dr. Marlon Williams, 12/86, of St. Croix, VI, is back in the news as he prepares for another Marathon at the Summ er O lym pics which will be held in Seoul, Korea.

Williams, who was made fam ous as he completed the '84 Marathon shoeless, writes that he is running 75 to 80 miles per wee k, and may do some altitude training in Denver before going to Korea . His official status with the games will be as Athlete/Team Physician for t he Virgin Islands Track and Field Team, and he will be an Assistant to Dr. Doug Menzies, a fellow Logan grad.

Marlon has been busy since his moving to St. Croix in December. In add itio n to opening his clinic , he is lectu ring at his local hospital. He writes that Dr. Cora Christian, a medical doctor, set up the lecture series, and he is leasing his office from Dr. Donna Green, who is Dr. Christian 's cousin. Dr. Chri sti an is Assistant Commissioner of Health for t he Islands, and Dr. Green is the Ch ief Administrator of the Hospital. Both are ad visors to the governor, and in his usual cavalier fashion, Williams has apparently charmed the ladies, since they are now referring him patients!!

The other highlight of his life is his family, and Cindy, Sheldon, and J.B. are all doing well. In fact, the proud pop reports that Sheldon recently wo n a 1K race!

The patient, K.W., is a 23 year old black female.

11. Chief Complaint

Ms. W. presented to Logan Health Center on 12/12/87 with the chief complaints of cervical pain and headaches, as well as, multiple joint pain at the wrists, elbows and shoulders bilaterally.

Ill. Problem List Ms. W. reports no other active complaints on the problem list.

IV. History of Present Illness

The patient describes the symptoms beginning in 1982 when tackled playing football. No other history of trauma was reported. Significant morning stiffness was subjectively noted for 3 weeks prior to admission. The onset of the pain has been insidious and intermittent. No noctural pain was reported. No provocation was noted except for increased work stress. The headaches were usually dull. The multiple joint pains were intermittent, burning and tingling. The pain was localized to the cervical spine.

The patient received hepatitis immunoglobulin after a reported case of Hepatitis B in a community services setting.

The patient denied any infectious contact. The symptoms have become progressive over the last 3 weeks.

V. Physical Examination

Ms. W. is a 5'6" and weights 102 lbs. with an emaciated appearance. Her vital signs were pulse 80, respiration 12, blood pressure 126/86, and temperature 98.8 Physical examination findings include bilateral nodules with swelling of the wrists, but normal skin temperature, constitutional symptoms of recent weight loss, malaize, fatique and fever were noted.

Postural analysis revealed a posterior shift in weight bearing of the cervical spine, a low left shoulder and left head tilt. A left high crest, left sacral inferiority, depressed left scapula and left toe out were also observed.

Upper quarter screen E\Xamination revealed a decrease in ce r\iical active and passive left lateral bending. A bilateral decrease in the deep tendon reflexes of the biceps and triceps were noted. All other orthopedic and neurological examinations were within normal limits.

The regional examination of the cervical

spine revealed hypertonic levator scapulae muscles bilaterally, which were tender to palpation. A decrease in extension was noted at the C4/C5 motor unit on motion palpation .

Initial Lab Data: On the day of admission a CBC and UA were performed.

The CBC revealed a slight microcytic anemia, the MCV was 77. The UA was within normal limits.

Radiographic Examination: The A-P and lateral radiographs demonstrated a posterior shift in weight bearing. The flexion and extension cervical radiographs demonstrated a decrease in intersegmental kinematics at C3/C4 and C4/C5 . No other abnormalities were noted.

VI. Initial Analysis

The systems to be considered with these chief complaints include: 1. Musculoskeletal 2. Gastrointestinal The differential diagnosis categories to be considered include: 1. Arthritide 2. lnfecton 3. Metabolic/Endocrine The initial differential diagnosis includes: Rheumatoid Arthritis 1.

2. Seronegative Spondyloarthropathies 3. Generalized Viral Infection 4. lntersegmental Dysfunction of C4/C5 5. Iron Deficiency These diagnosis are supported by the findings of 1) bilateral periarticular nodules present at the wrists 2) bilateral polyarticular pain 3) morning stiffness 4) decreased intersegmental motion of C4/C5 5) muscular hypertonicity of the posterior cervical musculature 6) microcytosis 7) constitutional symptoms.

VII. Initial Plan

The differential diagnosis for the chief complaints are listed in the initial analysis. The goal of treatment at the onset was to decrease the polyarticular joint swellings, decrease morning stiffness, address the iron deficiency and remove the intersegmental dysfunction.

Diagnositic Plans : Further diagnostic testing was used to narrow the differential diagnosis .¡ An R.A. latex and SMAC-23 plus A.N.A. were ordered to rule out the arthritide possibilities. A nutritional survey was performed to assess the iron deficiency.

The SMAC-23 results demonstrated altered liver fun ction. A hepatitis panel was then ordered . The results of the R.A. latex were positive 1 :20 and the hepatitis pan el resu Its were H BsAg positive .

The revised working diagnosis included : 1) Hepatititis B 2) Rheumatoid Arthritis 3) lntersegmental Dysfunction of C4/C5 4) Iron Deficiency Therapeutic Plans: 1) Nutritional support to enhance hepatic metabo lism included : powdered Vitamin C, a liver glandular substance, a liver enzyme and a bilirubin emulsifer 2) Contrast therapy on th e wrists to decrease the swelling and bed rest for the Rheumatoid Arthritis 3) Logan Basic adjustments with local manipulation at C4/C5 and tri gger point therapy to the posterio r cervica l musculature for the intersegme nta l dysfunction 4) Multiple vitamin supplement for the iron deficiency.

Patient Education : The patient was educated about Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hepatitis B and proper nutrition. The nutritional counselin g include d avoiding determined allergenic foods and the night shade family vegetab les, i.e. green peppers and tomatoes, w hich have been related to morning stiffness.

VI 11. Patient Response

Jaundice was noted at the fourth treatment, by which time the morning stiffness had decreased. The fatigue and malaise lasted for eight to ten weeks then subsided . The jaundice lasted for four weeks and then it cleared, all other joint pains also abated . The response to manipulation was excellent. All active ranges of motion returned to normal and trigger point pain decreased in severity. The headaches and cervical spine pains were relieved within six treatments.

IX. Discussion

The Rheumatic Manifestation of Hepatitis B McCarty stated that the most common rheurnatic sign of Hepatitis B is acute symmetrical polyarthritis involving multiple simultaneous joints 1 • Ten to thirty per cent of the Hepatitis B infections have rheumatic manifestation. 2 Inman stated that Hepatitis B can first manifest as abrupt morning stiffness and polyarthralgia before any other symptoms appear2. Case Report Hepatitis B will present with a fever 3 • Wands describes the clinically active HBsAg and anti-HB, along with other immunoglobulins and complement components creating a false positive R.A. latex in Hepatitis B4 • Ziff noted that the sera of seven of forty-three patients with infectious hepatitis yielded positive agglutination, an incidience of sixteen per cent5. The physical examination findings of periarticular nodules has been shown by Segool et. al to be found in the prodromal stage of Hepatitis B7. In conclusion , Hepatitis B ca ~ mimic many rheumatic disorders. Therefore, any case in which polyarthralgia and morn ing stiffness are part of the chief complaint further diagnostic testing is warranted.

Logan Faculty Memner ParticiP.ates in "Frontiers in Science'' Program Mr. J. Paul Ellis, Assistant Professor at Logan College, recently participated in a seminar, "Frontiers in Science," for outstanding students in the Hann ibal, Missouri area. The seminar was designed to inform science students of recent advances in certain fields so they are aware of career opportunities in the sciences. Students who participated had received outstanding marks in advanced science classes. This was the third year the seminar was held, and over 80 promising youngsters attended.

Mr. Ellis was one of the three presenters, the others being Joe Dillard, a senior fisheries research biologist, and Robert Scha,al a physical therapist Ellis gave a presentation on " the appreciation of anatomy," and how it relates to chiropractic . He noted that, "A chiropractor can recognize what is wrong with the body through knowledge of anatomy.

On a recent Thursday, two tired but anxious busloads of high school students unloaded at the entrance to the college, followed by an exuberant Dr. Elizabeth Parrot, leader of the crew.

The young people were exhausted after their five hour bus trip from their rural Graves County Kentucky, but Dr. Parrot, who is a graduate of Cleveland College, had enough enthusiasm for the group.

Dr. Parrot is actively involved with the American Chiropractic Association, and serves as State Delegate for Kentucky. She has served on numerous committees, and this high schoool field trip grew out of a trip she had made to Washington with one of the students in this class.

she did , and now plans to become a D.C. Later, another patient, and wife of the Superintendent of Schools for Graves County, commented that it would be wonderful if the accelerated students could actually observe an anatomy class and see firsthand, some of the things taking place in research at a college.

Not being one to sit around and wait for something to happen , Dr. Parrot contacted Logan 's President, Dr. Beatrice Hagen, to see what might be arranged . In her usual generous style, Hagen invited them to Logan, and suddenly a field trip with 80 students was underway.

Mr. Jerrel Ellington, Principal of the school, helped in organizing the group,

and accompanied them to the ca mpus.

The students were extrem ely we ll-behaved , and seemed fascinated wit h the presentation in the anatomy lab by Mr. Ellis and staff, -and in the Ergonomics Lab by Dr. Venditti and staff. Their school is in Graves County, Kentucky, and is a recently consolidated school district. It is the second largest in Ke ntucky, and encompasses six differe nt school areas.

Dr. Elizabeth Parrot, received her undergraduate education at Ottawa College, in Kansas, followed by her chiropractic education at Cleveland College in Kansas City. Her husband, Dr. Paul Parrot, also part of the group, received his doctor of chiro practic from Texas Chiropractic College. Dr. Liz has a brother, Tim Bagley, who is currently a Trimester 3 student, whil e Dr. Pau l's daughter, Debbie Klapp, is in the process of completing her pre-chi ropractic studies right now.

When asked why she took the ti me to coordinate this, Dr. Liz Parrot remarked , "How better to let people know about chiropractic than to bring the m to the source ... especially when they are young. Based on today's trip, there are now 80 new supporters of ch iropractic, and very probably a budd ing D.C. was born today. " The College family enjoyed the visit, and rooks forward to promised future visits . Our hat is off to Dr. Liz and Dr. Paul for taking their time to continue spreading the word!

It seems Dr. Parrot was treating a student for an athletic injury. The student, a superior high school athlete and straight " A" student, was planning on becoming a veterinarian. She was at Dr. Parrot' s office one day when Liz was planning a trip to Washington , D.C. and expressed interest in chiropractic, and what would be taking place in Washington . Parrott said , "You want to go along-ask your parents, and you can go \ th us." And
