Dr. Ralph Filson Tackles New Assignment, Caring for St. Louis Rams Players Dr. Ralph Filson, Professor of Chiropractic Sciences at Logan, has begun his work as chiropractor for the St. Louis Rams football team. As we reported in our last issue, Dr. Filson received the Rams appointment after achieving a successful track record of chiropractic care for St. Louis Cardinals players, including home-run champion Mark McGwire.

Dr. Filson already had been treating Rams players at this year's training camp and during the early weeks of football season. Below, Dr. Filson provides observations on his experiences with the Rams thus far and on care of elite athletes in general.

Q. How were you introduced to and received by the Rams players?

A. Jim Anderson, the Rams' head trainer, told the players that I was the new chiropractor for the team.

Jim also familiarized me with players' training programs and arranged for me to observe workouts in the weight room and practice drills.

Most of the players are very familiar with chiropractic. In many cases they've received care not only as professionals, but as college and high school players. Most players have positive views of chiropractic and are especially interested in preventive care.

Q. What are some of the most important considerations that you've found in working with professional athletes?

A. Full-spine, Reinert Diversified adjusting has been very important in my care of top-caliber athletes. If you want to care for these athletes, you have to be committed to fullspine adjusting. Because they earn their salaries based on their physical attributes, they really want to keep their bodies functioning at top levels. As I mentioned before, pro athletes often see preventive chiropractic care as an important aide to keeping their bodies in proper bal-

ance structurally, performing at higher levels and being less injuryprone. So, they want you to check everything.

Q. How often do you see Rams players?

A. I go to the training room on Sunday mornings before all home games. When the team will be playing out of town, I go to the camp on Saturday mornings before the players leave. During the week, ; individual players may come to my 1 office any time.

Q. Has your own athletic background as a weight-lifting competitor helped you provide effective care for athletes?

A. I think that all of the experiences that I had with weight-lifting - as a competitor, coach and chiropractor for Olympic weight-lifters - have helped me in my work with the pro baseball, football and hockey players. Training intensively myself has helped me understand experientially how individual body mechanics come into play during the training process. I think that understanding has helped me become more effective at adjusting.

Q. What techniques do you use in caring for the players?

A. I use specific Reinert Diversified adjusting as we teach it at Logan, with the application of the Logan System of Body Mechanics. When I adjust Rams players, many of whom have been adjusted by a lot of other DCs, it's not unusual for them to say things like, "Nobody ever moved that (joint) like that before."

Employing very specific Reinert Diversified adjusting methods has been a key factor in adjusting these players effectively. The education that I received at Logan has given me so much in general, and especially in terms of the tools that I've needed to care for top athletes. The understanding of how to apply body mechanics in adjusting - that I gained in my education at Logan - has been an asset for me throughout my career, and more so than ever now.

Q. What's it like to adjust such large athletes?

A. As I always tell students, a player's shape or size make no difference it's a matter of figuring out what's wrong from a mechanical standpoint and applying the right technique in the right way. Some of the football players weigh up to 380 pounds, but that's not a problem in terms of adjusting them.

Each individual athlete has unique conditions. However, I've seen the trends that you would expect to see, based on what players do.

With the Rams, the linemen will usually have lumbar problems, and the receivers and running backs are

Construction of Sports/Wellness Complex Is Well Underway Logan's William M. Harris, DC Sports/Wellness complex, under construction in recent months, is making progress toward a spring completion date, says Logan Physical Plant Superintendent Bob Brueggemann.

Steel erection took place this fall. In addition, the construction crew completed installation of the tennis courts, the sand volleyball court, a basketball area and lighting.

"We are now working on the underground utilities," says Brueggemann. "When that portion of the project is complete, we can lay the floor of the building. Unless we experience greater-than-normal bad weather this winter, we should be finished with construction by spring."

The Sports/Wellness Complex has been the subject of media attention in the St. Louis area, including coverage by the St. Louis Business journal and the St. Louis Suburban journals.

The Business journal article appeared on October 11. Reporter Andrea Corey interviewed Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman, about the features of the planned complex and changes to Logan's campus over the past few years, which also have included extensive ergonomic and technological advances in lecture rooms.

The article cites increased public acceptance of chiropractic and changing attitudes among medical doctors and insurers as having contributed to increased interest in chiropractic careers and Logan's enrollment growth in recent years. Logan's admission requirements, curriculum and community services also are outlined in the article.

Jerome McAndrews, national spokesperson for the American Chiropractic Association, also is quoted in the article, discussing research validating chiropractic care and increases in medical referrals for chiropractic care and in insurers' coverage of chiropractic services. Logan Alumni Elected to Two of Three Top ACA Leadership Positions Dr. James Mertz of Albuquerque is the new president and Dr. James D. Edwards of Emporia, Kan. has been elected to the Executive Committee of the American Chiropractic Association. Their elections took place in September during the ACJ\s annual business meeting in San Antonio.

Both doctors are Logan graduates.

Dr. Mertz graduated in 1956 and Dr. Edwards in 1977.

Dr. Mertz served as vice president of the ACA from 1997-99. He previously represented New Mexico on the ACA Council of Delegates and was president of the council from 1995-97.

While practicing in Missouri prior to moving to New Mexico, Dr. Mertz served on the Missouri Board of Chiropractic Examiners (1967-82).

Dr. Edwards was elected as the representative from Kansas to the ACA Council of Delegates in 1996. He also has served as chairman and treasurer of ACA-PAC, the association's political action committee. He was first elected to the ACA Board of Governors in 1998 and continues to serve as a governor for District VI. The governors elected him as their representative to the executive committee.

The ACA Executive Committee consists of Dr. Mertz, Dr. Edwards and Dr. J. Michael Flynn of Houma, La., who is the new chairman of the Board of Governors. The committee is charged with managing day-to-day operations of the ACA when the Board of Governors is not meeting and can act on behalf of the board.

ACA Leaders Focus on HCFA Lawsuit, Membership Growth Drs. Mertz and Edwards say that much of their time and that of other ACA leaders during the coming year will be devoted to the ACJ\s lawsuit against the Health Care Financing Association (HCFA) of the U.S.

Department of Health and Human Services. The suit concerns performance of spinal manipulation by nonDCs, as covered under Medicare.

In a motion to dismiss the suit, the Department of Health and Human Services has acknowledged that under Medicare, physical therapists cannot provide manipulation of the spine to correct a subluxation, which the response indicated must be provided by a chiropractic physician or a physician from another discipline.

Dr. Edwards says the ACA will continue to press the suit in an attempt to establish a policy that only chiroprac-tors - not medical or osteopathic physicians - can perform spinal manipulation as a service to Medicare+ Choice beneficiaries.

"We also want an accounting of misappropriated funds under the old policy that allowed physical therapists to perform manipulation," says Dr. Edwards, who anticipates devoting a great deal of time in his new position to fund-raising for the lawsuit. "My

Dr. Mertz says the lawsuit, which was filed in November 1998, is expected to be strengthened as a result of the recent introduction of two resolutions in Congress. The resolutions indicate that Congress' intent in legislation previously passed regarding spinal manipulation was that chiropractors would provide manipulative services under Medicare. Dr. Mertz is hopeful that one of the resolutions will come up for a vote and pass during the next few months, aiding the ACJ\s case if the suit goes to trial.

"If the HCFJ\s motion to dismiss is granted," says Dr. Mertz, "we will appeal that decision. "We are optimistic that the motion will be denied, and that the case will go to trial."

In addition to working closely with other ACA leaders and legal counsel on issues related to the lawsuit, Dr. Mertz is devoting much of his time to travel on the ACJ\.s behalf, speaking at state chiropractic conventions across the country. He also spoke at the 1999 convention of the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA).

"Our goal is to rebuild the ACJ\.s general membership back to its 1993 level of 12,000," says Dr. Mertz. He explains that in order to continue with the effort that the ACA is devoting to lobbying, member services, managed care issues and public relations efforts, the association will have to depend on growth in revenues.

"When I speak at state conventions and outline what the ACA has accomplished recently and why we need support," says Dr. Mertz. "the information is well-received. I think personal contact is essential to get the word out, because so many doctors lack the time to read very thoroughly all of the professional publications that they receive.

Doctors Note Logan's Tradition of Professional Leadership Dr. Mertz's interest in professional leadership and work with the political system to benefit chiropractic was influenced by a legendary Logan faculty member, Dr. Delphin P. Casey. Dr. Casey taught at Logan from 1940 until his death in 1977. He was the nephew of the college's founder, Dr. H.B. Logan. Dr. Casey's son, Michael Casey, is Logan's legal counsel.

"Dr. Casey was a mentor for me while I was a student," says Dr. Mertz.

"He got me involved in chiropractic politics."

While serving on the Missouri Board of Chiropractic Examiners during the 1960s, Dr. Mertz stayed in close rouch with Logan and worked in turn to mentor students who were interested in professional leadership and outreach to state and national legislators and other elected officials.

Among the students with whom Dr. Mertz worked closely was Logan

In addition to his work with the PGA Tour, Dr. Dorrity has a practice near St. Louis in Belleville, Ill.

Dr. Mertz owned two practices while in Missouri - one a general practice and the other a radiological consulting practice. He completed a residency in radiology, in part at Logan and in part at a facility in Tallmadge, Ohio operated by National College of Chiropractic. He continues to specialize in radiological consulting in Albuquerque, where he moved in 1980.

Dr. Edwards located in Emporia after graduating from Logan and currently is in a group practice that also includes Drs. Glen Heese and Larris Noble, who also are Logan graduates.

During his years of effort to advance the chiropractic profession, Dr. Edwards has been struck by the number of Logan graduates in professional leadership positions at the state and national levels.

"Three doctors on the 11-member ACA Board of Governors are Logan graduates," says Dr. Edwards. "In addition to Dr. Mertz and myself, Dr. Robert Lynch (of Portland, Maine) is a governor. Anywhere that I go, I'm never surprised to see numerous Logan graduates in positions of leadership in professional organizations. Logan can be very proud of the strong sense of responsibility that its alumni have shown toward the profession."

Logan Opens Health Center in East St. Louis Continuing with its long tradition of outreach to people with few options for ongoing health care, Logan College has opened a new health care facility serving residents of East St. Louis, Ill. The opening of the East St. Louis Health Center is the fulfillment of the first in a series of goals for the college established by Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman.

The new Logan Health Center is located at the East St. Louis Center of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The East St. Louis Center houses and provides an array of public services for East St. Louis residents, including various forms of health care, educational programs for young children and college-bound high school students, childcare programs and post-secondary job training for adults.

Logan is the first chiropractic provider to offer services at the East St. Louis Center. The college shares its office space with the University of Missouri School of Optometry. Also located in the building are clinics operated by the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville schools of dentistry and nursing.

"At the East St. Louis Center, Logan interns have the active opportunity for interdisciplinary interaction with students representing other health professions," says Dr. Goodman. "We believe that this aspect of the experience will be particularly valuable."

Logan trustee Willie Epps, PhD directs the East St. Louis Center, overseeing 3 13 employees and an annual operating budget of $ 11 million.

D r. M axine Morris Stewart, an April 1994 Logan graduate, is director of the new Health Center, which had its first patient visit on September 22.

Under Dr. Stewart's supervision, senior interns from Logan provide the same range of services that are available at other Logan Health Centers, including general physical examina-

tions, diagnostic X-rays and laboratory studies, and physical therapy services to supplement adjustments. If necessary, referrals for other forms of healthcare are provided following diagnosis, through a relationship with St. Mary's Hospital in East St. Louis.

The East St. Louis Health Center is open one and a half days a week.

Seven interns currently serve on its staff, with more interns expected this winter as the patient load grows.

"It is not unusual for us to see 25 patients in an afternoon," says Dr. Stewart. "The word is spreading quickly in the community."

Working at the center thus far has been a tremendous learning experience, says Dr. Stewart, who also teaches physical diagnosis laboratory classes and serves as a Student Health Center clinician at Logan. She previously worked as an admissions representative for the college.

"We see a much wider range of problems than is typical at the subur-

ban Health Centers or in many chiropractic practices in metropolitan areas," she says. "Of course, it's very sad at times. We see many people who have chronic problems that have gone without care because they lack insurance coverage.

"Ir's wonderful when we can help them, though," she says. "In some cases, people would have had to have surgeries if our care had not been available."

In addition to its free services at the East St. Louis center, Logan continues to operate a full-time, outpatient clinic providing free health care services to homeless and other lowincome people at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in St. Louis. The Harbor Light Center opened in 1988.

The college also provides health care services at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center on Forest Park Blvd. and at the Sham rock Club, located at the St. Patrick's Center, both in St. Louis.

Students Returning to Logan Campus Find Major Physical Improvements rooms, bringing to nine the number of classrooms on campus with such technology available. The high-tech classrooms feature projection systems with dual-screens for comfortable viewing by all, with capabilities of connecting with and projecting information from computer files and the Internet;

• The addition of about 25 PCs to the Student Computer Lab.

The expanded serving area in the renovated cafeteria allows for greater food choices.

Logan College's students departed for their longest break of the year in early August and returned to campus September 8. Upon returning they discovered:

• A completely refurbished cafeteria. The breakfast/lunch-room, located on the lower level of Logan's Administration Center, has been carpeted for the first time. An artist covered the walls with bright background colors and murals depicting St. Louis highlights and other scenes. The vending machines were moved to

a small room across the hall from the cafeteria. The serving line area has been enlarged to accommodate a wider selection of food choices available from the college's new dining vendor, Food Service Consultants;

• A Commerce Bank ATM machine that has been installed in the ground-floor elevator lobby near the Health Center hallway; • Advanced technology installations in five additional class-

In addition to improved classroom technology, faculty members found another campus improvement that offers them convenience: A faculty lounge, located near the cafeteria in the former Audio-Visual Department lab space. The AV department moved to larger quarters down the hall, near the Physical Plant offices.

Within a few weeks of students' return to campus, a message monitor system was in place in the Administration Center's main lobby, conveying information about campus events and news items to everyone passing through the area.

"Our employees worked hard and did a fine job in bringing together these improvements within a few short weeks," said Sharon Kehrer, MBA, Vice President of Administrative Affairs. "We also are making good progress on construction of the Wellness/Sports complex, which will be a wonderful facility for our students and employees."

The family of Todd Hamilton, DC (8190} of Herrin, Ill. Dr. Hamilton passed away on October 21 of natural causes. He had practiced in Herrin since graduating from Logan and was a trustee of the Herrin Elks.

Dr. Hamilton's friend and classmate, Bruce Horchak, DC of Tampa, Fla., writes, "Those whose lives he touched with his special kind of gentleness and caring will forever feel the void left by his passing. I will forever cherish the memories of my best friend and will always have a special place for him in my heart."

The family of Jon Engelhardt, DC (J 2190}, who passed away on August 30 after experiencing a brain hemorrhage. He had practiced in South St. Louis Counry.

A local newspaper reported that Dr. Engelhardt's wife, Carol and his parents are collecting letters from friends and colleagues of Dr. Engelhardt as a future gift to his 4-year-old daughter, Mallory. Family and Friends Day Speakers Offer Students Positive Views of Chiropractic's Future Logan College's second on-campus event for family members and friends of students brought students and their guests to campus on Saturday, October 9, for a festive and informative day, including speaker presentations and a barbeque luncheon. Admission to all events was free of charge to students and their guests.

The day was planned as a streamlined follow-up to last year's "Family and Friends Weekend." Dean of Student Services E. Daniel Kapraun, EdD and the Logan Student Doctors Council planned the event.

The program opened with a welcome by Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman. Speakers included Logan SDC President Kern McMurtrie and Dr. Ralph Barrale, President of the Logan Alumni Association. The keynote address was given by Dr. Cliff Hardick.

Dr. Hardick, of London, Ontario, is a past Chiropractor of the Year of the Canadian Chiropractic Association and has been a keynote speaker for the International Chiropractors Association annual convention. He spoke on "Bringing Chiropractic to the Next Millennium."

Dr. Paul Hollern Visits Logan Dr. Paul Hollern, a 1987 Logan graduate from Louisville who is known for his effective methods of practice management, visited the college on September 16, spending two class periods speaking to the Trimester 8 class. • ---~,,____.~ Doris Bell DC, Associate Professor of Chiropractic Sciences at Logan College, was inducted as president of the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME) during the association's 1999 annual meeting, held September 16-21 in D allas. Dr. Bell became NAMME's president-elect last year.

More than 100 college and university health profession schools and undergraduate institutions were represented at this year's NAMME convention. During the convention, the A§sociation of Chiropractic Colleges, represented by ACC Executive Director David O'Bryan, hosted an evening reception for all participants.

Representatives of Texas, Northwestern and Los Angeles chiropractic colleges were among the attendees at the convention.

T he convention included a number of seminars for the educators in attendance, stressing personal and professional development topics. There also were workshops attended by Dallasarea high school and college students, including sessions addressing surfing the web to research professional educational opportunities and ways to be competitive in health profession educational admissions processes.

Ronald Gaddis, PhD, lack Penning!_on, PhD and Vernon Yeager, PhD. Dr. Gaddis teaches embryology in the Basic Science Division. He received his doctoral degree in pharmacology/toxicology from the University of Kansas. His experience includes teaching at Maryville U niversity in West St. Louis County, teaching and research in cardiovascular pharmacology at the University of Missouri-Columbia and work in pharmacology, research and development and human resources at Marion Merrell Dow Inc. in Kansas C ity.

D r. Pennington, who teaches Physiology I in Logan's Basic Science Division, is a professor in the Department of Biology and Psychology at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, where he has taught since 1972. H e also has experience in consulting and organizational leadership positions with a variety of scientific, health-related, educational and military organizations. He completed his PhD degree at Saint Louis University, specializing in education.

H e received bachelor's and master's degrees in biology and psychology from Texas A & M University.

Dr. Yeager teaches Gross Anatomy I and Spinal Anatomy Laboratory in the Basic Science Division. He previously taught anatomy and m edical gross anatomy at Saint Louis University, where he is now Professor Emeritus, and at the University of North Dakota, where he received his doctoral degree in anatomy. At Saint Louis University, Dr. Yeager also has published extensively in his specialty and served as a director for numerous doctoral dissertations and master's theses .

Logan Theatre Helps Young People Understand Chiropractic

Explaining chiropractic care so that children can understand it is a challenge for many doctors, both experienced and new to the field. But it's a critical task for chiropractic, as student Maureen Hall realized during a lecture

by RudolfVrugtman, MBA, who teaches business management at Logan.

"Mr. Vrugtman described the history of dentistry,'' says Hall. "In the past, people only went to the dentist to have teeth pulled. So, dentists went into schools and educated kids about the importance of dental hygiene and having regular dental cleanings to prevent dental problems. Although some adults still don't receive dental care, the dental profession got its message across well enough that millions of people began visiting dentists.

"Mr. Vrugtman said, 'If you are smart, and want to help yourself and the chiropractic profession, you'll do the same thing,'" adds Hall.

After the lecture, Hall says, "I thought, 'We're smart. We could do that."' She then developed an idea - a play about chiropractic for children -

and recruited fellow Logan students to participate in a new student group titled, "The Logan Theatre."

At first, says Hall, "I was afraid. We do not have club status on campus, so we had no Student Doctors Council funding. I covered expenses. Also, our musicians were the only members of the group who had performing arts backgrounds."

The students persevered, drafting an initial version of the play.

Dissatisfied with that version, which they decided was too "slick," they brainstormed for new ideas on a new story line and rewrote the script, with performers writing monologues for their characters.

The result was a musical, "Mabel's Great Chiropractic Adventure. "The play is the story of Sasha, an energetic, healthy child, and Mabel, her chronically-fatigued, junk food-junkie friend.

During a visit to the office of Sasha's chiropractor, Dr. Brian, they encounter a variety of bodily organs, a nerve cell, muscles and Studly Doright, a musically-talented spine who sings, "The Backbone Blues. "

the tower• december 1999 The characters help Dr. Brian explain chiropractic care to Mabel by demonstrating the difficulties they face in trying to do their jobs when confronted by the unpopular and muchfeared "Sinister Subluxation." At the end of the show, Dr. Brian emerges as a super-hero, ChiroDoc, who defeats Sinister Subluxation as the other characters begin the finale musical number, "ChiroDoc." "Chiro Doc" and "The Backbone Blues" are original tunes by the show's musicians.

The play contains strong, positive messages about the importance of sound nutrition, exercise and good posture, completing its chiropractic message.

The cast has performed the show twice on campus and off-campus at St. Louis' City Museum on October 10.

The City Museum is a reconverted factory in downtown St. Louis, with

page 13 offbeat historical exhibits and unusual play and climbing areas for children that were developed from the factory's original structures. The museum has become a significant St. Louis attraction since its opening in 1997.

"We have been very impressed by the professionalism and talent that the students demonstrate in their performances," says Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman. "We believe that they are representing the college and the chiropractic profession in a very positive way."

The students are now working to book the show at area schools. "We've also copyrighted the script," says Hall, "so that perhaps in the future, if it's used by other chiropractic organizations, it will produce income for the Student Doctors Council."

Uogan student Niki Buchanan and Hall are the show's directors. The

colorful costumes worn by the characters were designed by the costuming committee with guidance from Hall's brother, artist Richard S. Cunningham of Cleveland. Student Melissa Matthew, Dr. Ruth Birch of the Basic Sciences faculty and Kim Ownbey, Health Centers Marketing Director, assisted the show's directors as members of the costuming committee.

"In addition to scheduling performances at schools," says Hall, "our greatest challenge now is recruiting new students to participate, since many members of the current group will soon graduate. But we hope for a strong future for the theater group and the show."

The theatre group is now in transition to new leadership: Pilar Williamsen, producer and Jeremiah Freedman, director.

Business Speakers Offer Information to Students The National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company (NCMIC) hosted a business seminar for Logan students this fall. The program is designed to

help chiropractic students succeed in private practice.

Dr. Louis Sportelli shared chiropractic business information with students during the sixhour seminar on October 14 and 15. Dr. Sportelli is president of NCMIC, a 37-year chiropractic practitioner in Palmerton, Penn. and a former president and chairman of the board of the American Chiropractic Association. He spoke to students in Trimesters 8 and 9.

Entering Students to Meet New Admission Standards Academic Prerequisites for Admission, Beginning in 2001

The prerequisites below represent minimum CCE requirements.

There may be additional requirements for licensure in individual states. Also, the college offers a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology, which has additional prerequisites.

• (As of September 2001) three academic years of study, at an accredited college or university, with at least 90 transferable semester hours and a minimum GPA of2.5; • One-half an academic year (not less then three semester hours) of psychology; • A minimum of 15 semester hours of social sciences and/or humanities.

An academic year (six or more semester hours) ofeach ofthe following: • Wriuen and oral communication • Biological science with related laboratories (applicable courses: general biology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, zoology) • General or inorganic chemistry • Organic chemistry • Physics

As a result of changing national standards for chiropractic students, Logan College is changing its admission requirements. In cooperation with the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), Logan has established new standards that must be met by all students enrolling as of September 2001.

The new standards were announced

by William Ramsey, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs. "As of September of 2001," says Dr. Ramsey, "everyone enrolling at Logan will be required to have a minimum of 90 s~mester hours of undergraduate credit', including the science and liberal arts courses that have been prerequisites for admission for a number of years," (see sidebar).

Dr. Ramsey adds that the first change in admission requirements, which took place this September, went well.

"Students entering this past September were required to have minimum GPAs of 2.5, as opposed to 2.25, which had been the minimum," says Dr. Ramsey. "We feel that having a higher minimum GPA, in combination with free tutoring and many other support mechanisms that we have on campus, will enable us to continue to improve our strong retention rate."

Dr. Ramsey notes that large percentages of Logan students from all entering classes over the past few years have had 90 or more semester hours of credit.

"We have enrolled large percentages of students with bachelor's degrees and, in some cases, advanced degrees," he says. "So, the additional credit requirements should not pose a hardship for most of our applicants. Our Office of Admissions will work closely with any prospective students who have questions or who need assistance in determining where they can best complete any additional needed course work."

Patrick Browne, EdD (C), Dean of Student Enrollment, is in charge of day-to-day implementation of the new admission standards.

"We think that these changes will be positive for students and for Logan as an institution," says Browne. "We have been working over the past several months to make certain that prospective students are aware of the new requirements, and the communication process is going smoothly."

••slice of Logan" Offers Prospective Students A Taste of the Logan Experience Logan College has held two special events for prospective students in recent months - the first comprehensive programs designed by the college to bring large numbers of students interested in chiropractic careers to campus and introduce them to every facet of the Logan experience.

Called "Slice of Logan," the series of events has been implemented by the Office of Admissions under the leader-

ship of Dean of Student Enrollment Patrick Browne, EdD (C). Slice of Logan events were held in June and October, attracting a total of about 150 people, 75 of whom are prospective students.

"The program was designed to be as interactive as possible," says Browne.

"Students and their guests participate in traditional college visit activities such as campus tours and meals, while

also meeting current students and faculty members, who can provide firsthand answers about what it's like to be at Logan."

Each Slice of Logan program features a continental breakfast and lunch, student and student service administrators' panels and mock adjusting classes during which guests observe as instructors adjust current students and discuss the procedures.

Prospective students even gain some experience with spinal palpation during the mock classes.

Individual attention is provided to each prospective student via admission and financial interviews, which can be scheduled in conjunction with Slice of Logan.

As is true whenever a prospective student from out of town comes to campus for an admission interview, prospective students receive free overnight housing in local hotels the night before the event.

"We had people from as far away as New Mexico and Pittsburgh at the October program," says Browne.

"Since out-of-state students may not be able to visit campus often before enrolling, we think these programs help them get a lot of information out of one visit."

Dr. Ramsey Receives Award William Ramsey, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Logan, received the 1999 President's Award from the National Council for Occupational Education. The award was presented to Dr. Ramsey during the NCOE annual meeting, held October 21-23 in Seattle.

Dr. Ramsey was one of the initial founders of the NCOE and served as its second president during 1975 -76.

At that time, he was president of Milwaukee Area Technical College.

During the NCOE conference, Dr. Ramsey also spoke on how occupational education is changing and on _how it is being affected by technology.

"If you look at the word, 'occupational,' broadly," says Dr. Ramsey, "nearly all education is occupational in some way, although some educational programs lead more directly to specific careers than do others. I feel that I've spent my entire career working in occupati,?nal education in one way or another.

Dr. Ramsey has been Logan's top academic administrator for 18 years.

His long and successful career has included teaching and serving as an elementary school principal in Ohio, where he became the state's youngest school superintendent at age 26. He is a past chairman of the board of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has held leadership positions with numerous other state, regional and national educational organizations.

Dr. Owen Bartruff Visits Logan After Completing 6,500-Mile Bike Trip After completing a successful, fourmonth journey from Alaska to Florida, a tired but happy Logan alumnus returned to campus for a visit on October 15.

Dr. Owen Bartruff, who graduated from Logan in 1998, set out from Anchorage this past Memorial Day weekend, arriving at his destination in Miami in September. The purpose of the trip was to raise funds for the Buoniconti Foundation and the Miami Project, a research organization that seeks a cure for paralysis caused by spinal injuries. The trip was called "SPRINT Across the Continent,'' SPRINT standing for "Special People Reaching Inside Themselves."

During his trip, Dr. Bamuff was accompanied by a support van driver and also had his Labrador retriever,

Sprint, with him. In addition, 1977 Logan graduate Thomas Hyde, DC, DABCSP of North Miami joined Dr. Bartruff for portions of the trip.

Dr. Bartruff previously initiated, organized and completed two long-distance bike rides. With other Logan College students in 1997 and 1998 he rode from St. Louis to Florida in the "Tour de Spine," raising funds for the American Spinal Research Foundation - (ASRF).

Dr. Bartruff had many adventures to share from his trip. During a windy c!rive, his equipment and supplies fell off the equipment truck. When he and Dr. Hyde, who was riding with him, drove the truck back to recover the equipment along the road, they saw a truck zoom by with their equipment in its bed! They chased the truck in

hot pursuit at more than 70 miles per hour for 15 miles, and finally caught up with it. Luckily, they were able to recover everything.

Despite traveling during the summer months, Dr. Bartruff encountered snow and ice as he rode through Canada. He conquered his most challenging ride in the Kananaskis Range in Canada, where the road is closed six months of every year. He endured a wall of freezing rain and lightning near Calgary.

While visiting St. Louis during his trip, Dr. Bartruff was a guest for morning show interviews on KEZKFM and KSDK-TY, discussing his trip and chiropractic. When he returned to St. Louis in October, he appeared once again on KSDK.

Logan Student Is ••Mr. Missouri'' Trimester 10 Logan student Tony Miller is this year's "Mr. Missouri" in the lightweight class of the Missouri State Body-Building Competition. The competition took place in Springfield in July.

A body-builder for five years, Miller also took part in the statewide competition in 1996 and competed at the regional level in 1997. As a result of winning at the state level this year, he will compete in a national event, "Team Universe,'' in New York City next August.

"The New York competition is a national, drug-tested event,'' says Miller. "Winners in each category will go to a worldwide competition as Team USA. Making it to worldwide competition is my ultimate goal."

A St. Louis native, Miller trains at Powerhouse Gym in St. Peters, Mo. This trimester he has been completing Logan clinical requirements for graduation and working as a teaching assistant for Diversified adjusting classes.

Prior to enrolling at Logan, Miller studied at Lindenwood College and at Saint Louis University.

"As an undergraduate, I played soccer and baseball," says Miller. "But by my senior year, I knew I needed more time for academics. Body-building has been a great way to stay in shape and a way to gain a lot more time and scheduling flexibility than I had with varsity team sports. That's the main thing that I wanted. Body-building competition is really exciting, too, though, so I'm looking forward to the coming year."

Logan Participates in Program to Aid Homeless Veterans As it has for the past several years, Logan College played an active role in this year's "Operation Stand Down" for St. Louis-area homeless veterans, sponsored by the St. Louis County Office of Veterans Affairs. "Stand Down" is a military term referring to a soldier's opportunity to leave the field of battle for rest.

Operation Stand Down features a variety of health care services, as well as job-search and legal assistance and clothing for homeless U.S. military veterans. The event took place October 9 on the grounds of the Veterans Administration Hospital in St. Louis. Logan's pa,rticipation this year was organized by Dr. Allen Parry, Logan Archivist and adviser to the Logan Veterans Club.

The college sent 24 clinical interns to Operation Stand Down, with Dr. Parry and August 1999 graduate Dr. Gina Scognamiglio, a teaching assistant at Logan, providing clinical supervision. The interns and doctors provided focused regional exams and soft tissue/muscle work for visitors to two tents staffed by the college at the event. Logan provided services to 239 visitors to its two stations.

"We were located both by the food area and by the medical station, so we had a lot of visibility,'' says Dr. Parry.

"Although the day started out with terrible rain, requiring the staff to put up tents, everything turned out very well.

The veterans and people staffing the program responded very favorably to our care."

Radiology Department Brings Dr. Lindsay Rowe to Campus The Logan Radiology Department welcomed internationally noted radiologist Dr. Lindsay Rowe to campus on October 25 and 26. While on campus, Dr. Rowe spoke to radiology and differential diagnosis classes, providing case reviews, and also reviewed cases with Radiology Department residents and Logan Health Center interns.

Dr. Rowe received a MappSc degree (the Australian chiropractic degree) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He also has a medical degree, holds Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Board of Radiologists and is a Fellow in the International College of Chiropractors.

With American chiropractic radiologist Dr. Terry Yochum, Dr. Rowe wrote the textbook Esso;ztials of Skeletal Radiology, which is used at most chiropractic colleges worldwide and at numerous medical schools. Dr. Rowe is a staff member of the Department of Medical Imaging at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, Australia. He is visiting the United States to complete a fellowship under the direction of internationally known medical musculoskeletal radiologist Dr. Donald Resnick.

"Dr. Rowe is an excellent speaker who presents information well and also uses humor effectively," says Dr. Kettner.

"I think the students found him to be very gracious."

Dr. Kettner brought Dr. Rowe to campus from the annual meeting of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology, held in Philadelphia in October.

"The ACCR meeting was excellent this year," says Dr. Kettner. "Two of our residents - Drs. William Atherton and Deborah Brahee - gave high-quality case presentations during the conference." Drs. Gary Guebert, Gary Casper and D. Robert Kuhn, all of the Logan faculty, also were in attendance at the ACCR meeting.

Postgraduate Seminar Schedule Offers Diverse Topics The Logan Postgraduate Department is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting season of professional education for its program and seminar participants.

Logan Postgraduate Department Director Dr. Ralph Barrale has announced that the department's new Diplomate program in clinical nutrition will begin January 8-9 on campus.

Primary instructor will be Dr. Karla Kruse.

"This program will offer doctors indepth information about clinical nutrition and current research on nutrition," says Dr. Barrale. "In addition to hearing lectures, participants will analyze lab tests during most sessions. Doctors also will leave each seminar with five 'pearls of wisdom' for immediate application in their practices on Monday."

The Diplomate course will include a review of biochemistry and anatomy in relation to all categories of nutrients and the characteristics, functions and metabolism of nutrients. Interactions between nutrients and herbs, uses of herbal remedies, clinical appraisal, trace minerals, antioxidants, homeopathy, fad diets and the effects of food additives and rotation diets for allergies also are among specialty topics to be covered.

Beginning the weekend of January 8 and 9 on campus, the Postgraduate Department will introduce a new acupuncture program, based on a syllabus established by the International

Academy of Medical Acupuncture Inc. Lead instructor for the program is academy founder, Dr. John Amaro, a chiropractor who is a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture and who holds Diplomate status with the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture.

Dr. Amaro studied acupuncture in the United States, in Kowloon, China and in Tokyo. He has published research articles worldwide and is a columnist for Dynamic Chiropractic. He !-1as escorted more than 500 doctors on 13 visits to the People's Republic of China and served as the first chairman ofrthe Arizona Board of Acupuncture Examiners.

Successful completion of the 400hour program and exams developed by Dr. Amaro leads to the designation Diplomate-Advanced Fellow.

Technique Symposia, Detox and ElectroMedicine Seminars Scheduled On January 22-23, the Postgraduate Department will begin a series of technique symposia on campus. Each symposium will feature a variety of experts

in techniques included.

The first weekend will focus on cervical adjusting from the perspectives of Diversified, T hompson, Gonstead, Sacro-Occipital and Logan Basic techniques. Faculty for the first weekend will be Dr. Barrale and Drs. Ralph Filson, Larry Hutti, Kathy Kuhn, Mary Saale and Joseph Unger. Subsequent symposia will address thoracic, lumbar and extremity adjusting.

Also on campus on January 22-23, Dr. David Frahm, a naturopathic physician, will teach a seminar on detoxification. Dr. Frahm and his wife, Anne, wrote a book, A Cancer Battle Plan, outlining a nutritional approach that she used to recover her health after being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.

Anne Frahm subsequently passed away. However, the book received a widespread response leading to the opening of HealthQuarters Ministries and HealthQuarters Lodge, a retreat center offering seminars on diet and lifestyle changes to help people with chronic illnesses detoxify their bodies.

On March 18-19, the Postgraduate Department will offer an electro-medicine seminar on campus, featuring multiple experts.

Dr. Vi Nickson, a member of Logan's first (1939) graduating class who retired as the college's archivist in 1997, is pictured with Director of Learning Resources Rosemary Buhr.
