Trustees Meet, Elect New Board Members The Logan College Board of Trustees met on Sunday, February 8 at the Frontenac Hi Iton Hotel in West St. Louis County, reviewing the college's financial status, administrative operations and progress in strategic planning. Buescher, DC joined the Board of Trustees Advisory Council. Advisory Council members participate in meetings of the Board of Trustees but do not have voting privileges.

Dr. Epps is currently the director of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville's East St. Louis campus. He is a former director of SlUE's Head Start program in East St. Lou is.

Dr. Epps is vice president of the East St. Louis Community Fund and is a past vice president of the Illinois Head Start Association . He is a member of the National Academy of Science Early Childhood Roundtable and of the National Council on Head Start Research.

A resident of the St. Louis suburb of Florissant, Dr. Epps received his doctoral degree in educational administration from Kansas State University.

He has received the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. award from Southern

Illinois University at Edwardsville; the African-American Male Image Award from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; and the Outstanding Leader of St. Louis Award from the Center for Leadership of St. Louis .

Higgins is president of Sachs Properties Inc. of St. Louis. An 18year employee at Sachs, she previously led the company's leasing and marketing operations . She serves as a director of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA, Faust Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Chesterfield Arts Commission. She also is past treasurer of Commercial Real Estate Women of St. Louis.

Higgins received a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Missouri. She lives in West St. Louis County.

Named "Distinguished Legislator" for 1995 by the Missouri Hospital Association, Senator Klarich has a strong interest in healthcare issues and has worked as a legislator to help the chiropractic profession gain recognition in Missouri.

Rechter has 25 years' experience in the investment and merchant banking industry in St. Louis . He is currently managing general partner of Kling, Rechter & Company L.P., a merchant bank that is in partnership with First Chicago Equity Capital Corporation, an affilicate of First Chicago NBD Corporation . He previously was managing director of the St. Louis investment banking office of Prudential Securities, Inc .

Rechter received a bachelor of science degree from New York University.

A resident of the St. Louis suburb of Ladue, Rechter is a former president and a current board member of

the Center of Contemporary Arts in St. Louis, a not-for-profit arts organization. He also serves on the board of directors of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates ), a not-for-profit organization that represents orphaned children in the judicial system .

Dr. Small succeeds Dr. Larry Steele as Alumni Representative to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Steele completed the nine-year maximum term on the board this year (see article below).

A 1988 Logan graduate, Dr. Small has served on the Logan Alumni Association Board of Directors since 1989 and was elected as the association's second vice president in 1997.

He served as secretary of the association for 1996-97. He is in private practice in Nashville, Ill. He also has an office in nearby Pinckneyville.

Dr. Small is past president of the Lion's Club in Nashville.

Advisory Council Members Offer Diverse Expertise Currently employed as director of health and safety at Mallinckrodt Inc. of St. Louis, Boyen also has held similar positions with the Monsanto Company of St. Louis. He has more than 30 years' experience in work-

place safety and plant management.

A resident of Chesterfield, Boyen received his master of business administration degree from Western New England College. He is a former board member of the Calhoun County (Mo.) United Way and served as vice president of the St. Charles Parish United Way. Dr. Buescher is president of ACPI (Associated Chiropractic Providers of Illinois), a chiropractic PPO. A 1970 Logan graduate, he practices in Peoria, Ill., where he operates an office with three DCs and 10 staff members.

Dr. Buescher's community activities in Peoria include serving on the board of directors of the Southside Mission and as a deacon of the Grace Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Brown was elected to her second one-year term as a member of the Advisory Council of the Logan Board of Trustees . Dr. Brown retired as a member of the Board of Trustees after reaching the maximum nine years of service in 1997. She served as the board's chairperson from 1995-97.

Dr. Brown is a publishing consultant and retired executive editor of McGraw-Hill Book Company - Webster Division.

College Expresses Appreciation to Retiring Trustees The February 8 Board of Trustees meeting was the final one for five retiring trustees of the college.

Health Centers Form Partnership With USA Karate USA Karate C lubs of St. Louis and the Logan Co ll ege Health Centers have formed a partnership for the purpose of providing chiropractic expert ise and treatment to c lub members competing in karate tournaments.

Clinicians and interns of Logan's Southroads Health Center, wh ich opened last fall, wil l be the primary service providers under the agreement. The karate c lub's three locat ions are in South St. Louis County, near the Southroads Center.

Dr. L. Blair Nie lsen, director of the Southroads Center, says the USA Karate program w ill offer outstanding educat iona l opportun iti es for Logan interns, particularly those in terested in ch iropract ic sports injury care and rehabilitation .

"We wi ll provide general physical exams to all 450 members of the c lub," says Dr. Nie lsen . "More intensive services wil l begin with the karate club's four nationally ranked competitors . They w ill receive indi v idu al assessments of range of motion, flexibility, strength and imb alances, in add iti on to spinal exam in ations and adjustments. We also will provide specific pliometric training ('burst-strength' condit ioning for fast movements requiring strength)."

The Health Center also wil l provide nutritional ana lys is, dietary counse lin g and superv ised rehabilitation following injuries. Logan clinicians and interns attend all practices and tournaments in wh ich the "e lite team" competes.

"After about a year," says Dr. Nie lsen, "we anticipate being ab le to offer the complete service package to al l USA Karate Club members. If individual members request it before the end of the first year, however, we will provide it."

logan Featured in Two St. louis-Area Publications The December 1997 issue of the St. Louis Medical Business journal examined how two St. Louis-area institutions, Logan College and Washington University School of Medicine, have capitalized on industrial demand for clinical studies.

In the article, "St. Louis Organization (sic) Heat Up Competition for Clinical Studies/' writer Peter Downs discussed recent changes in the medical school's method of negotiating research contracts with drug companies - changes that have enabled it to compete with the rapidly growing for-profit research sector.

Logan's Ergonomics Center was featured for its work on product evaluations for companies making devices to help alleviate chronic pain or producing workplace equipment that is intended to be ergonomically correct. Among the products the Ergonomics Center has evaluated are pillows, arch supports, seat cushions and wrist supports. Dr. Gary Sanders, Director of Research and Ergonomics at Logan, provided information about the center's work.

A sidebar story, "St. Louis: Gateway to American Acupuncture Market?," also mentioned Logan College as the site of a lecture last summer by Dr. Ji-Sheng Han, a neurologist at Beijing Medical University. The article also was written by Downs, who

The March 1998 issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine featured Logan's clinical education program along with clinical education programs at Barnes-Jewish-Christian Hospital (affiliated with the Washington University School of Medicine) and at Saint Louis University Hospital , affiliated with the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

Commerce is the magazine of the

St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association, whose members include small-to-Fortune 500 companies, universities and non-profit organizations throughout the St. Louis region.

Writer Joy Ward addressed each institution's approach to helping clinical interns relate what they've learned in the classroom to actual patient care. Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman was Logan College's source for the article.

Former Logan Faculty Member, Dr. H. David Chamberlain, Dies Dr. H . David Chamberlain, a 1949 Logan graduate who taught at the college between 1950 and 1955, passed away on February 8 in Knoxville, Tenn., where he had practiced beginning in 1955. Dr. Chamberlain was the father of Dr. D. Allen Chamberlain, also of Knoxville, a member of the Logan Alumni Association Board of Directors.

While serving on the Logan faculty during the 1950s, Dr. Chamberlain also was clinic director. Retired from prac-

tice at the time of his death, he was a past president of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association and of the Tennessee Valley Chiropractic Association.

Known for his gentility and kindness, Dr. Chamberlain was extremely active within the Knoxville community. He was a district lay leader of the Washington Pike United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher and a lay mission leader. He also was chaplain of the Knox County Jail for 29 years.

Dr. Chamberlain was a recipient of the Denman Award for Evangelism in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and of the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

The family has established a memorial fund to accept donations to Logan College in memory of Dr. Chamberlain. Donations can be sent to the H. David Chamberlain Memorial Fund, in care of the Logan Alumni Association at the college.

logan Adds Two New "Smart" Classrooms In keeping with its commitment to utilize technology to enhance students' educational experience, Logan College recently added its second and third "smart" classrooms. The first such room, 156A, was completed in 1997 as a pilot project. The new smart rooms are 142B and 156B. Each smart room has two large screens, allowing for optimal viewing from any area of the room. Leveled seating, added to all Logan lecture rooms by 1995, adds to students' comfort during long hours of viewing overhead materials.

A single video slide projector, operated by the instructor at the podium, can transfer the same image to projectors serving each screen. In addition, each smart room has an ELMO visual presenter, which can project a color image from any material laid upon it - a transparency, a document page, a small X-ray film or a book.

A Boeckler writing system in each smart room provides an electronic pad that enables the instructor to draw circles, arrows, etc. on visual material and project these indicators onto material showing on both screens.

Instructors using the rooms also can show videotapes on both screens, with sound controls located at the podium . A canned lighting system enables the instructor to turn fluorescent I ights off while maintaining dim light, enabling students to write or move around the room if necessary.

A portable computer can be taken to a smart room or to any of Logan's traditional lecture rooms for use in projecting images from the Internet onto screens.

Two Alumni Meet Dr. Cornelius' Fund-Raising Challenge Last fall, 1940 Logan graduate Dr. Paul Cornelius of Clayton, Mo., a long-time supporter of the co ll ege, offered a unique fund-raising challenge. Dr. Co rnelius offered a total of $10,000 in matching funds if two donors would contribute $5 , 000 each.

Drs. Eugene Sparlin of Atlanta and Jon Sunderlage of Elgin, Ill. have met

Dr. Cornelius' challenge. "We are very gratefu I to Dr. Cornelius and to Drs. Sparlin and Sunderlage," said Donald Mclain, Vice President of Institutiona l Advancement at Logan.

"Their generous gifts will add significantly to the success of our 1997-98 phonathon fund drive."

Dr. Carrick Receives Award for Distinguished Teaching Noted ch iropractic neurologist and Postgradu ate D epartm ent Logan instructor D r. Frederick R. Carri ck visited th e Logan campus on February 13 to lecture on chiropractic neurology and to accept an award from the co ll ege.

Before an all-co ll ege assembly in gymnas ium, Loga n th e Loga n President Dr. George A. Goodman presented Dr. Ca rri ck w ith the awa rd, "Distinguished Postgraduate Professor of C lini ca l N eurology." After th e award presentation, Dr. Ca rri ck lectured on the topi c, "Chiropractic N euro logy and Its App lications in th e Treatm ent of Stroke, Co ma and Human Suffering."

Alumni Association Hosts "Alumni Day" for Students The Logan College Alumni Association held its annual "Alumni D ay" on the Logan campus on Saturday, January 24. Alumni Day is an annual practice managem ent seminar hosted by the alumni association for Logan students, who pay a nominal registration fee.

Presenter for this year's alumni day program was chiropractic speaker Dr. Maurice Pisciottano of McMurray, Penn . Dr. Pisciottano's topi c was "Chiropractic Enthusiasm."

The program concluded with a catered reception . Dr. Pisciottano and members of the Logan Alumni Association Board of Directors were avail ab le to students at the reception for continued discussion and networking. In addition, Dr. Pisciottano donated a set of his videotapes and slides to the Logan Learning Resources Center.

Dr. Pisciottano has been in chiropractic practice sin ce 1989 . He is a postgraduate faculty member at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Logan Expresses Condolences to Family of Louise Toftness M. Lou ise Toftness of Cumberland, Wis. , wife of the late Dr. I.N. Toftness, passed away on january 30 at age 89. She and her late husband were lo ng-time friends and benefactors of Logan College.

Dr. Toftness graduated from Palm er Co llege of Chirop ractic, but co mpl eted postgraduate study of Logan Basic Technique under Logan Co ll ege's founder, th e late Dr. H.B. Logan. Dr. Toftn ess adapted Dr. Loga n's adjusting methods to form his own low-force technique, the Toftness system of chirop ractic adj ustin g.

Dr. Brown Recognized In Conjunction With Black History Month During th e 1998 Black History Month in February, the

St. Louis Post-Dispatch profil ed living African-Ameri cans in St. Louis, noted for outstanding professional achievement and/or comm unity service. Virginia Brown, PhD, currentl y a member of the Logan Board of Trustees Advisory Council, was the subject of the newspaper's profile on February 2 7.

Dr. Brown, who served the maximum nine years as a Logan Board member before retiring as Chairperson of the Board in 1997, is a retired executive ed itor of M cG raw-Hill Book Company, W ebster D ivi sion. Sh e continues to work as an editor and consu ltant.

Dr. Marquina also worked at Honeywell Computers in Minnesota and as director of the artificial intelligence center for General Electri c in Moorestown, N.j . He then joined Coopers & Lybrand LLP, a Big 6 accounting firm, as the partner in charge of decision support systems. Dr. Marquina moved to a New York City suburb in New j ersey .¡¡ with his wife, Sh erro n, who then worked as a management consultant.

The couple had met and married in Houston.

Considering a Career Change: Chiropractic Was an Intriguing Alternative In New jersey, the Marquinas became interested in chiropractic. "I saw a chiropractor to help address stress-related probl ems th at resulted from my job," Dr. M arqui na explains.

"We attended a program that my doctor gave on Applied Kinesiology. The way that AK explains the fun ction of the body made perfect sense to me."

Dr. M arquina had long had an interest in the structure and biomechanics of th e human body. " In develop ing the comp uters for use by quadriplegics, I worked with doctors who explained the anatomi ca l requirements of the projects - which muscles had to move when, etc. I learned a Iittle about the biomechanics of wh at I w as doi ng, and w as intrigued by it.

"Also, when I w as young, I fell into engineering almost by accident," says Dr. M arquina. " It seemed like an easy way to get a profess ion al job in the United States. But I rea ll y w anted to work with people."

The M arquinas explored their interest in chirop racti c and eventuall y decided to enroll at Logan. Dr. Nelson will graduate this April , and Sherron th e followin g August.

PAGE 13 Marquina has used his educational and professional background in a variety of ways to help the college. He is w orking with Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman on development of a joint DC/PhD degree program, for consideration by a St. Louis-area university.

Although it may require several years to have the program fully approved and in place, Dr. Marquina has high hopes for its implementation.

Applying Technology in Chiropractic In addition, Dr. Marquina has worked on a number of projects w ith the Logan Radiology Department. As a computer systems designer, he also developed an interest in image analysis, or how computers can be programmed to recognize images, whether for digitized photography or evaluation of a radiograph.

"The technology exists for comp uters to perform the most basic evaluation functions for X-ray screening," he says.

"Eventuall y, computers may be ab le to perform many such tasks, although I beli eve that evalu ation of th e most complex cases will always require a radiologist."

D r. Marqu ina also assisted Dr. Norman W. Kettner, Chairperson of the Logan Radiology Department, and Dr. Goodman with development of a proposal for Logan Co ll ege to join th e Misso uri Gateway Geri atri c Educatio n Center (MOGG EC).

MOGGEC is funded by the Bureau of H ealth Professions of the U.S .

Department of H ea lth and Human Servi ces . Th e Division of Geri atri c M edicine of the Saint Louis Un iversity Schoo l of M edicine recently received a grant for three years of continued fund ing of MOGGEC. As the December 1997 issue of th e Tower repo rted, Logan Coll ege is one of several new in stitutions inc luded in MOGGEC under the new grant.

Kettn er and D r. j ohn Golden, a faculty member and former resident in radi ology at Logan, on a resea rch project concerning the use of ultrasound to assess the hea lth of spinal nerve roots, usin g cadavers.

"Nerves are very damaged by the time degeneration shows, even on an MRI exam," says Dr. Marquina. "We are investigating how an inexpensive technology like ultrasound may be used to identify problems as early as possible."

The Marquinas also are preparing to enter chiropractic practice in the Hampton area in Virgini a. "Sherron's famil y is there, and we like the area," says Dr. Marquina. "Once in practi ce, I hope to utilize Appli ed Kin esiology, Logan Basic Technique, acupuncture, cranio-sacral therapy and cl inical nutrition in patient care."

As a student at Logan, Dr. Marquina has worked part-time in the offi ce of Dr. Bert Hanicke of Logan's Chiropractic Science Division and a widely known Applied Kinesiology spec ialist.

In the future, Dr. Marquina also hopes to combine his knowledge of patient care in chiropractic with hi s background in electri ca l engineering.

"Many people are aware of how technology can be used in evaluating patients already," he says. "We send Xray films through the Internet with amazing clarity. W e can also perform some types of physica l examinations on- lin e. A doctor ca n look into a patient's eye and transmit the im age he or she sees to a specialist 2,000 miles away via the Internet.

"What w e are still lacking, though," Dr. Marquina adds, " is a comprehen sive telemedi cine network that combines all the poss ibilit ies for digitized evaluation into one system. No fi eld of health care has such a system at this time . Once one is developed, it w ill revolution ize patient ca re, providing a cost -effective means of offering vast numbers of patients the help of any health profess iona ls whose experti se they need."

Dr. M arquina says his know ledge could enabl e him to work on developing a comprehensive telemedicine system. Whatever direction his chiropract ic career takes him, however, he is committed to bringing hi s sk ill s to help advance the profession. " It's a very interesting time to be in health ca re, and especially in chiropracti c," he says. "Sherron and I are very excited about the possibi Iiti es for our future careers."

Volleyball Team Takes SecondPlace Honors At CMCC Tournament Logan College's volleyball team was the silver medalist at the 1998 CMCC Volleyball Tournament, sponsored by Th e Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and held Janu ary 22 -24 on the co ll ege campus in Toronto and at nearby facilities.

Chiropractic colleges and other college and university teams competed in the event.

Sean Moran, Student Doctors Counc il Student Athletic Director at Logan, said the tournament had Competitive I, Competitive II and Recreational leve ls. Logan fielded one of 10 teams competing in the Competitive I group. Logan's vo lleyball players were Ed Can avan (team capta in), Jeanette Kelder, Jeff Kempe, Ric Lenholdt, Leslie Reed, Rob Weaver and Dwight Whynot.

Is Vice President of Arts Commission Logan President George A. Goodman, DC, FICC recently became vice president of the Chesterfie ld Arts Commissi on after being elected to this post by members of the commission.

Formed in 1995, the commission is a non-profit organization that encourages the display of artwork and selects artwork for display sites in public areas of Chesterfield, the St. Lou is suburb where Logan College is located.

Dr. Goodman was first appoi nted to the arts commi ss ion soon after its formation in 1995, by then-mayor of Chesterfie ld Jack Leonard.

Fred Barge, DC of LaCrosse, Wis. visited the Logan campus on January 14, 15 and 16, lecturing to students in Trimesters 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9. Dr. Barge is a past president of the Internatio nal Chiropractors Association and a well-known chiropractic lecturer.

Dr. Barge's lecture topics during his visit to Logan included chiropractic hi story, the chiropracti c paradigm, how medical and chiropractic approaches comp lement each other, t he vertebral subluxation comp lex and practice guidelines.

On February 20, Dr. Lois Ladd visited ca mpus and lectured as a guest of the Logan Acupuncture Club. Dr. Ladd, who graduated from Logan in 1988 and practices in Edwardsville, Ill ., spoke on acupuncture. She also is a faculty member at Logan.

Although it is not included in Logan's doctor of chirop ractic degree curriculum, students at the co llege may take seminars in the 120-hou r Basic Acupuncture program offered by the Logan Postgraduate Department.

College Welcomes New Financial Aid Director

Elizabeth Lowry Elizabeth Lowry is Logan's new Director of Financial Aid . She succeeds Karen Long, who left the college to accept a position overseeing financial aid operations for several campuses of a technical school.

Lowry joins Logan College from McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill., where she was financial aid director for two years . She previously worked in financial aid at Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey, ill .

Lowry received a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville and is nearing completion of a master of arts degree in management at Fontbonne College in St. Louis .

Employees Recognized for Helping Homeless Veterans Each year since 1990, Logan College has provided gift packages of warm, new clothing for up to 350 St. Louis-area homeless men and women . The charitable program developed in conjunction with Logan's work as a provider of health care services at three St. Louis-area Salvation Army facilities and at a center operated by Catholic Charities of Sf. Lou is.

Two Logan employees have been recognized by the St. Louis Area Stand Down Committee, which operates in cooperation with the St. Lou is County Office of Veterans Affairs . The Office of Veterans Affairs participates in Logan's hoi iday gift program eac h year by providing a Christmas dinner for 100 homel ess U.S . military veterans, each of whom receives one of the college's gift packages.

Affairs. Erica Collier, secretary in the Logan Radiology Department, received a letter from Eckhoff recognizing her services to homeless veterans.

Maness has aided Logan's charitable programs for the homeless in numerous ways, including collecting used and new clothing, sorting gift items and coordinating wrapping of items for the gift packages, which usually are wrapped by Logan employee and student volunteers.

Maness also volunteers with a monthly charitable outreach program for the homeless operated by a St. Louis-area church.

Collier has worked since 1995 under the direction of Dr. Allen Parry, Dean of Postgraduate Education at Logan, as coordinator of all on-campus fund-raising and preparation activities for the holiday gift program.

Prior to 1995, former Logan faculty member Dr. Kathleen Naughton coordinated the holiday gift program.

Collier worked closely with Dr. Naughton as a member of the holiday gift program co mmittee.
