College Re-Accredited for Seven Years The Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) has granted reaccreditation to Logan College for seven years. The Commission announced the College's reaccreditation in late June. Logan became the first college to receive a seven-year reaccreditation from the Commission. A seven-year period is the maximum length of time allowed for reaccreditation by the CCE. A six-member evaluation team representing the Commission on

Accreditation visited the campus in March. The team observed classes, laboratories, and the operation of the health centers. They also toured the College's facilities, and conducted in-depth interviews with students, faculty members, staff members and administrators.

Following the evaluation, representatives of the College, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, and the chairperson of the evaluation team appeared before the Commission on Accreditation to discuss and

analyze the findings of the team.

Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen expressed appreciation to the Commission for its strong vote of confidence in granting the sevenyear extension of accreditation. She also praised the efforts of Logan faculty, administrators, and staff members who spent many hours compiling information for the site visit and the follow-up appearance before the Commission.

A 1940 Logan graduate, Dr. Coggins joined the Logan faculty immediately after graduation, and later served as Dean of the College. He also practiced in South St. Louis.

During these years, he was affectionately called "Wild Bill" by Logan students. Dr. Coggins became the third president of the College upon the death of Dr. Vinton Logan.

Dr. Coggins is especially remembered for his financial stewardship, which enabled the College to grow and expand substantially during his tenure as president. Under his leadership, the College purchased

(in 1973) and paid off the present campus in Chesterfield.

The Board of Trustees voted to pay tribute to Dr. Coggins by naming the Administration Center in his honor.

The dedication ceremony was held June 13 (the first day of Homecoming). Dr. Coggins, accompanied by his wife, Elizabeth, was present. Dr. George Goodman, Vice President for Chiropractic Affairs, served as the Master of Ceremonies.

Dr. Coggins' dedication to the College and the demands of his work as president. She also presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs. Coggins, in appreciation of her support of Dr. Coggins in his work.

The dedication of the building was led by Dr. Ronald Harris, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Harris commented on the material sacrifices also made by the Coggins family, as Dr. Coggins refused many salary increases in an effort to help the College maintain financial stability. Dr. Harris presented a framed litho print of the Administration Center to Dr. Coggins.

Dr. Coggins thanked the Board of Trustees for honoring him. He expressed appreciation for the support of Dr. Jack Pry, who chaired the Board of Trustees from 19631976. (Dr. Pry was unable to be present due to back surgery resulting from an injury s.uffered in a parachute jump during World War II.) Dr. Coggins also thanked Jean Short, Director of Financial Aid, who served as his secretary, and the other staff members who began working at the College during his tenure.

been placed near the circle in front of the Administration Center, recognizes Logan students and graduates, past, present, and future, who served, or who will serve in the U.S. armed forces.

The Memorial was funded by the family and friends of William R. Lilley, D.C., a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who died while a student at Logan. (The College awarded his degree posthumously, soon after his death.) Dr. Lilley's wife, Terry and their daughter participated in the dedication ceremony. Two benches which have

been placed by the Memorial were obtained on behalf of the College

by Dr. Larry Steele, Alumni Representative to the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Allen Parry, who serves as adviser to the Logan Veteran's Club and is on the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, led the dedication of the Memorial.

The dedication ceremony audience also enjoyed hearing the national anthem and "Proud to be an American" sung by Dr. Robert Copp '90, a professional singer who performed at many College events while a student.

Radio-TV Personality Delights Homecoming Banquet Audience

Prior to the Administration Center dedication, Dr. Coggins returned to the role of teacher, as the featured lecturer in the Basic Technique seminar.

Art Fleming, original host of the TV game show "Jeopardy" was the guest speaker for the Homecoming banquet. In addition to his work on "Jeopardy," Fleming has appeared in more than 40 motion pictures, including MacArthur, in which he played the role of Averill Harriman.

He now co-hosts "Trivia Spectacular," credited with being one of the highest rated radio shows in the in

nation, for KMOX-AM (St. Louis).

The Homecoming banquet audience enjoyed hearing Fleming share a number of amusing anecdotes, and discuss his positive experience with chiropractic care.

Awards, Alumni Association Elections Announced During Homecoming The Heritage Award, the highest award of the Logan College Alumni Association, was presented during the Homecoming banquet to Dr. Gordon Toftness of Cumberland, Wis., who retired earlier this year as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees after serving in the post since 1980. The Heritage Award recognizes outstanding service to Logan College and to the chiropractic profession.

In addition, Dr. Ronald Harris, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, presented a plaque to Dr. Toftness in recognition of his 12 years' service on the Board. Dr. Arlan Fuhr, who served for 10 years on the Board, also received a plaque but was unable to be present to accept it.

The Alumni Association presented a Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Terry Yochum, a frequent Logan Homecoming speaker and guest speaker on campus. Dr. Yochum, who was unable to stay for the Homecoming banquet, received his award earlier in the day, at the end of his lecture.

Dr. Yochum also received a recognition award from the College.

Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen said that the award was given in appreciation of Dr. Yochum's generosity in donating his time to assist the Logan Department of Radiology during the 1980's. One of the chiropractic profession's most renowned radiologists, Dr. Yochum served as a consultant for the Department of Radiology, and provided extensive one-on-one training to the Department chairperson, Dr. Norman Kettner '80.

Dr. Gregg, President of the International Chiropractors Association, is the first Logan graduate to serve as president of the ICA. During the Homecoming banquet, a Logan Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr. Virginia Brown, member (and former Vice Chairperson of) the Logan Board of Truste~s.

Two other members of the Board, Robert Stearley and Dr. John Danchik, also received Distinguished Service Awards but were unable to be present to accept their awards.

Alumni Association Distinguished Service Awards also were presented to Marge Cune, the College's personnel director; and to Bob Snyders, Reference Librarian.

The Alumni Association presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Dick Versendaal. Dr. Versendaal taught his seminar, Contact Reflex Analysis and Applied Trophology, at the St. Louis Airport Marriott on the last day of Homecoming. The seminar was available free of charge to Logan Homecoming participants, and Dr. Versendaal donated the proceeds of the seminar to the Logan Alumni Association.

The "From the Heart" Award for outstanding service to the Alumni Association was presented to Sharon Kehrer, Executive Alumni Director.

Logan Alumnus to Play Key Role in Lovelace Medical Foundation Research on Chiropractic In our last issue, we reported that Dr. James Lehman '72 of Albuquerque, N.M., is the Chairman of Lovelace Chiropractic, the new chiropractic services department of Lovelace, Inc. Lovelace Inc. is an integrated health care organization, owned by the Cigna Corporation of Philadelphia. One of its divisions, the Lovelace Health Plan, is New Mexico's oldest and largest HMO. Neill Piland, Dr.P.H. (Doctor of Public Health), Director of the Center for Health and Population Research at the Lovelace Medical Foundation, was one of the 1991 Homecoming speakers. The Lovelace Medical Foundation is the former owner of Lovelace, Inc., and continues to conduct research and other projects with the health care organization.

During his Homecoming presentation, Dr. Piland discussed current trends in managed health care, and his view of how chiropractic can expand its role in managed care.

about chiropractic care, Dr. Piland emphasized the need for more controlled research studies of the results of chiropractic care. Now in the planning stages at the Lovelace Medical Foundation is such a study.

The study's subjects will be patients of Lovelace Chiropractic, and of orthopedic medical specialists

within the Lovelace Health Plan. As Chairman of Lovelace Chiropractic, Dr. Lehman will work with Dr. Piland in the planning of the study.

Dr. Piland anticipates that the study will compare clinical outcomes, cost effectiveness, and patient satisfaction under chiropractic and allopathic care.

Student Talent Show Adds to Homecoming Entertainment A new event was added to the Homecoming schedule this year, one which seemed to be greatly enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

A number of very talented students performed in the Logan College Student Talent Show.

First, second and third place scholarship prizes were offered ($500, $300, and $200 respectively), funded by the Logan Alumni STAR Program and the Student Doctors Council. The judges were Dr. George Goodman, Vice President for Chiropractic Affairs; Sue Fredericks, Director of Community Relations; Sharon Kehrer, Executive Alumni Director, and Drs. Robin McCauley and Jerry Carpenter of the faculty.

Drs. Ralph Filson, Ralph Barrale, Michael Wittmer, and Robert Diamond of the faculty served as Me's.

Radiology Department Adds Equipment and Announces Research Findings/Publications Several major new pieces of equipment have been acquired by the Logan Radiology Department. Some of the new pieces of equipment were donated to the College by manufacturers. The acquisition of the new equipment was announced by Dr. Norman Kettner, Chairperson of the Radiology Department. The donations were solicited and coordinated by Dr. Gary Guebert, Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences.

The number of x-ray units has been increased to three with the addition of a Model 450SE-HFQ highfrequency machine from the Bennett X-Ray Corporation of Copaigue, N. Y. This new x-ray unit is truly state-ofthe-art and has been available only since late 1990. Through the use of micro-processors, the x-ray output of the new machine is twice as efficient as older, single-phase machines. The result is decreased patient exposure to radiation - an average 25% reduction compared to older machines.

The new machine requires only 110 volts of electricity, rather than the usual 220 volts, to provide energy savings and reduce the expenses of wiring.

Instrumental in making the machine available to the College were Calvin Kleinman, Chief Executive Officer of Bennett X-Ray Corporation; Rob Coe, the firm's Vice President of Engineering, and Walter Schneider, Operations Manager. Free installation was provided by Clarence Kuenecke, President of X-ray Associates, the St. LouisArea dealer for Bennett X-Ray Corp.

The Health Science Division of Kodak Corp. has donated about $5,000 worth of Lanex Fast intensifying screens and C1 cassettes. The screen is used with T-MAT-G film to provide a 600-speed rare earth combination.

About 50% less radiation is required to produce radiographs, compared with the 400-speed used in older systems.

Also donated by Kodak was a quality control system consisting of a sensitometer and a self-reading densitometer. The devices, with a value of about $3,500, enable students to learn procedures for quality control testing,

which is required under new laws in New York and Texas. The devices permit daily monitoring of the quality of x-ray processing at all of Logan's four Health Centers.

Dr. Guebert credits Mike Hogan, Regional Sales Manager at Kodak, and Bob Shara, Account Manager, whose efforts helped bring about the donation of the Kodak equipment.

A full complement of Clear Lead filters was donated to the Department of Radiology by Nuclear Associates of Carle Place, N.Y. Martin Ratner, Director of Sales & Marketing for Nuclear Associates, played an important role in the company's decision to donate the equipment.

The Nuclear Associates filters, made of acrylic plastic impregnated with lead, are sectional filters that attenuate portions of the X-ray beam. They filter out excessive areas of the beam to reduce the patient's overall exposure and to improve picture quality.

The filters are mounted on the collimator with magnets and thus are very simple to install and remove.

Another piece of equipment recently donated to the College played an important role in a pilot study conducted by three students as their senior research project, with Dr. Kettner as adviser.

Drs. Ed Barksdale, Richie R. Roth, and Jeffrey Snodgrass (all April '91 graduates) and Dr. Kettner utilized a P.M. 100 Computer Thermography unit, donated to the College by Dr.

Kevin Steen '83 of Fresno, Cal. The study was designed to test the Logan premise of regulation of the lower extremity by the autonomic nervous system. Computer thermography was used to monitor the vascular response in each subject's calves during the administration of a Basic adjustment, or a sham adjustment.

Dr. Kettner presented the study's findings during the 1991 Homecoming seminar on Logan Basic Technique.

Dr. Kettner began his presentation by discussing the merits of thermography as a tool for measuring the body's physiological responses. "Thermography gives you a very different image from an X-ray. An X-ray depicts anatomy, while thermography is a tool for studying the body's physiological responses as they occur. The two together provide the complete biological picture.

"Since chiropractors try to alter the behavior of the autonomic nervous system, and produce physiological changes, thermography is an excellent research tool for our profession."

Dr. Kettner explained that thermography measures variations in heat energy emitted by the body.

Thirteen subjects participated in the study. All were asymptomatic, except one who suffered from chronic low back pain. One subject received a sham adjustment, while the others received Basic adjustments, using the Apex contact. "Vascular changes were detected in 50% of the subjects who received Basic adjustments. THE TOWER/SUMMER 1991 showed increased perfusion in the lower extremity. The extent of the changes varied from subject to subject," reported Dr. Kettner.

Dr. Kettner concluded his presentation by discussing recent advances in imaging technology, including biomagnetic imaging, which measures magnetic fields within tissues. "This technology has enabled the scientific community to pinpoint the origins of electric impulses within the body, such as magnetic fields emitted from the brain, spinal cord, or muscles.

"It is suspected that all healing processes employ such internal electrical currents, or what we would call Innate currents, which may be affected by chiropractic adjustments," said Dr. Kettner. "These currents also correspond to the meridians used in Oriental healing systems. The evolving technology of biomagnetic imaging, by permitting the measurement of internal electrical impulses, will have a strong impact on chiropractic research."

Logan Alumni Prominent at ACA Sports Council Meeting Several Logan alumni played prominent roles at the convention of the ACA Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, held in April at the LaMeridien Hotel on Coronado Island, Cal. The convention was held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the International Federation of Chiropractique Sportive.

The Council's most prestigious award, the Hall of Fame Award, was presented to Dr. Joseph Santiago '40, of Colonia, N.J. Dr. Santiago was recognized for promoting chiropractic through involvement in sports for more than 50 years.

Dr. Thomas Hyde '77, of North Miami, Fla., whose term as President of the Council will continue until

June, 1992, presided over the Council meetings. Dr. Robin Hunter '86, of Columbus, Oh. was elected 1st Vice President of the Council. Dr. Robert Monokian '78, of Cherry Hill, N.J. was elected Treasurer.

Dr. Marianne Gengenbach '83 was re-appointed to a third term on the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP). The ACBSP is the certifying arm of the ACA Sports Council. Dr. Gengenbach is currently serving her second term as President of the ACBSP. She is an associate professor and Coordinator of Clinical Education at Logan.

Drs. Hyde, Hunter, and Gengenbach also serve on the College's postgraduate faculty.

has accepted for publication two articles which he co-wrote. The first article, "MRI of the Wrist: Occult Osseous Lesions" was written with Dr. Claude Pierre-Jerome, an April '91 Logan graduate. Dr. Pierre-Jerome, who previously received a medical degree from the University of Valencia Medical School in Spain, served on the Clinical Science Division faculty while completing his D.C. degree.

The second article, written by Dr. Kettner with Dr. Gary Guebert, Assistant Professor of Clinical Science, is entitled: "The Radiology of Cervical Spine Injury."

Also, an article written by Dr. Kettner and Nancy Barry, D.C., resident in Radiology at Logan, was published in the May issue (Volume II) of Chiropractic Sports Medicine.

The article by Drs. Kettner and Barry is entitled: "Pathomagnetics and Contemporary Imaging."

Additionally, Dr. Kettner has had several condensations, co-written with 11 students in his Clinical Study of Geriatrics course, published in D.C. Tracts. Dr. Kettner and his students summarized and analyzed articles from a variety of health care journals.

Marianne Gengenbach, D.C., C.C.S.P., Associate Professor of Clinical Science and Coordinator of Clinical Education, was one of 16 ACA delegates to the 1991 Congress of the World Federation of Chiropractic, held May 2-5 in Toronto.

The Congress, the first held by the Federation, was attended by representatives of more than 30 countries.

Dr. Gengenbach also was a recent guest speaker at Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Kansas City, Mo., where she lectured on "Chiropractic and Sports Injuries."

Deborah Lawson, D.C., Assistant Director of Research and Assistant Professor of Clinical Science, has been accepted as a candidate for a Ph.D. degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of MissouriColumbia. Completion of the program will take two or three years, during which Dr. Lawson plans to continue her research responsibilities at the College. She also will serve as a guest lecturer for the Clinical Science Division.

E.J. Hawkinson, D.C., Research Associate and Instructor of Chiropractic Science, recently was elected chairman of the Franklin County (Mo.) Board of the Handicapped, of which he has been a member since 1987. The Board sponsors a variety of residential and employment programs for handicapped individuals.

"Chesterfield Days" Brings Community Visitors to Campus The City of Chesterfield held its first annual festival, Chesterfield Days, on the Logan campus on June 21-23.

The event was sponsored by the Chesterfield Community Events Corporation, a coalition of Chesterfield civic groups.

The festival featured a variety of family entertainment, including carnival rides, booths, performances by musical groups, food tents sponsored by local restaurants, dog obedience demonstrations, an owner-pet look-alike contest, sand volleyball tournaments, and a fitness walk using the fitness trail on campus. Logan students provided on-site first aid, and some of the fraternities and sororities sponsored fund-raising booths. The Cadeuceus Club also sponsored a booth, and provided visitors with spinal analyses, using the College's spinal analysis machine (SAM).

The rides, booths, and entertainment were located in and around the parking area behind the Science, Research, and Ergonomics Center.

Unfortunately, the attendance at Chesterfield Days was less than its organizers had anticipated, due to rainy weather throughout the weekend. However, Sue Fredericks, Logan's Director of Community Relations and chairperson of the event, said that the festival brought many individuals onto campus who

were previously unfamiliar with the College. "Of course, we were sorry to lose some of our craft booths and our visitors because of the rain, but many of the people who attended seemed very impressed by our facilities. The Cadeuceus Club's booth also attracted a great deal of interest."

Political Involvement: How and Why A Conversation with Dr. Edward Glover After five years on the Commission, I decided to run for the City Council, and won. I've only been in office for a few months, but I think it's going to be a great experience.

Dr. Edward Glover '53, member of the Logan Board of Trustees, and recently elected Councilman-atLarge on the Peoria, Ill. City Council, exudes enthusiasm for political activity. He also possesses a wealth of knowledge of political and community organizations. He will share some of this knowledge at a seminar on political involvement during the Illinois Chiropractic Society's 1991 convention, to be held October 11-13 in St. Louis.

During Homecoming, Dr. Glover discussed with us some of the tips, ideas, and insights on which he planned to elaborate during the ICS convention seminar.

Tower: Dr. Glover, why should D.C.'s become active politically?

Dr. Glover: Chiropractors have always had a strong service concept, but we need to transfer that concept out into the community. We need to demonstrate our community concern actively.

I feel very strongly that any professional or business person should make an effort to be a good citizen, to give back to the community. Also, community involvement enables people to get to know you, and develop respect for you as an individual, which reflects well on your profession.

I feel political involvement is an especially important form of community service for chiropractors, because it is so essential for our profession to be represented in the political decision-making process.

It is important that we have political contacts who are open to our point of view when legislation affecting us is proposed. It's even better if we can actually have D.C.'s in some offices. Dr. John Davidson, for example, is one of our state senators in Illinois. Any piece of state legislation which relates in any way to chiropractic is sent to him for initial review, which is such an advantage for chiropractors in Illinois. Other legislators, even those who are very friendly with our

profession, may not understand the clinical and other implications of the way a piece of legislation is worded.

T.: How did you become successful in local politics?

Dr. G.: I became involved at the grass-roots level, which is very easy for anyone who is willing to invest some time and energy. I attended political fund-raising events, and began assisting in campaigns for candidates for state and local offices. I also met political leaders through involvement in school activities, and through the local Kiwanis Club, which I served as president. Eventually, a friend encouraged me to run for a position on the school board. I lost that election, but was elected to the school board two years later, and served for ten years.

At that point, I decided to devote my time to helping a friend who was running for mayor. My wife, Rosalie and I ran his campaign office. He won the election, and appointed me to the Civic Center Commission.

T.: What suggestions do you have for doctors with no community organization or political experience?

Dr. G.: Ideally, you should begin community and political activity at a young age, because it takes time to gain experience and develop contacts. If you ask around your community, even if you're new there, you can find out which service or other clubs are the most active and visible, which organizations have community leaders as members, etc.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce also is an excellent organization for the young practitioner. It provides good opportunities to meet other young professionals, and to network with other potential community and political leaders.

And, as I said earlier, assisting politicians with their primary elections is very important. If they are successful, they may be able to help you advance politically, if that is your goal.

If you are not interested in holding an elected office, you can become an indispensable organizational leader. My wife, for example, does not want to hold an office, but she has extensive political experience and is very much in demand as a campaign manager. In that role, you also will find that people you help, after they are elected, will be very receptive to your point of view on any issue of importance to you.

T. Do you have any final tips on being successful in political activity?

Dr. G.: When selecting people whom you wish to help, always be true to your own political philosophy, whether it is conservative or liberal. And, always support good candidates, who have realistic chances of winning, and be visible as you work for them.

Logan Student Active in National Efforts to Recruit Minority Health Profession Students The declining number of minority students entering all health professions is a national concern. Educators, health professionals, and other concerned individuals across the country are attempting to identify the reasons for this trend, and to find ways to reverse it.

Trimester 7 student Dion Newton has become a leader in addressing this issue, both within the Logan College community, and in national organizations dedicated to increasing the number of minorDion Newton ities entering the health professions.

Newton, who works part-time with the College's admission staff as a recruiter, has spoken at many of the historically black colleges and universities in the U.S. He has developed a particularly close relationship with Hampton University in Virginia.

Hampton is a member of the 16 Institutions Health Sciences Consortium, a group of undergraduate schools working to increase minority representation in the health professions. Newton gave a presentation at the Consortium's 1990 convention, addressing pre-health profession advisers from member institutions and several hundred other colleges and universities. More than 450 advisers heard Newton's presentation, in which Dr. Bill Humphrey II '85 also participated.

As a result of his visibility in Consortium activities, Newton was asked to join the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME). He now represents Logan College in NAMME, which includes more than 450 educational institutions throughout the U.S. At the organization's 1990 convention, he took part in discussions of the problems which minorities encounter in pursuing careers in the health professions, and possible solutions for these problems.

Newton's primary goal is to interest students in pursuing chiropractic careers. "Many members of minority groups have not been exposed to natural approaches to health care, such as chiropractic," says Newton.

"Since I recruit for a chiropractic college, obviously I want to inform people about the opportunities in my field. However, I also want to see more minority students entering all health professions, since we now make up less than one percent of the enrollment in health profession education in the U.S. "I have found that undergraduate students do not know what a typical professional school classroom environment is like. I feel that if they are more knowledgeable of what to expect, they will give more serious consideration to becoming health professionals. When I visit a college or university, I lecture on topics that would be studied in depth in any health profession program, such as the classical, universal approach to physical diagnosis. In the second part of such a lecture, I discuss treatment planning, explaining the approach that a doctor of chiropractic would take at that stage."

Newton's desire for a chiropractic career developed in a somewhat unique way. He graduated in 1983 from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., where he studied psychology on a full athletic scholarship (he played tailback on the varsity football team). After graduation, he worked at a mental health center in Marlon, Ind., his home town. He was intrigued by the fact that the center's patients, who were under psychiatric care, had very limited success rates with the medications they received.

He began to read about natural methods of health care.

After researching chiropractic, Newton approached doctors in Marion to learn more about the profession, and decided to pursue a career in the field. He utilized a graduate fellowship to Ball State to complete the science prerequisites for chiropractic school, also obtaining a Master of Arts in organizational

development.

Newton put his chiropractic educational plans on hold, however, to become a group leader for Operation Crossroads Africa, an intercultural educational organization which sends American, Canadian, and Puerto Rican students to live in native villages, for purposes of cultural exchange. After returning to the U.S., Newton began interviewing with business recruiters interested in Crossroads participants. He was hired by the Marine Midland Bank in New York City, where he worked as a human resources analyst and operations officer until 1989, when he entered Logan. In addition to his studies and his work as a recruiter, Newton is active in Pi Kappa Chi, national chiropractic fraternity, and is a member of Student ACA. He also is now very busy with the planning of NAMME's 1991 convention, to be held September 14-18 in St. Louis.

The convention will be hosted by Logan College; the Washington University Medical School, and the Univ. of Mo.-St. Louis School of Optometry.

During the convention, Newton anticipates that NAMME members will discuss issues such as effective networking when hiring minority faculty members; retention of minority students in health profession educational programs; and financial concerns of minority pre-health profession students.

Newton has found his work with the Consortium and NAMME to be an exciting introduction to health care educational organizations. "I enjoy observing the high levels of professionalism, the concern for students, and the sophisticated planning processes of these groups," he says. "It's very exciting to make chiropractic a significant part of the NAMME convention, and to receive mentoring from the more experienced professionals I meet. Although the small number of minorities entering the health professions is a complex problem, it's rewarding to be part of the solution."

A native of Nottingham, England, Dr. Moore earned her D.O. degree from the British College of Osteopathy in London in 1987.

An April '91 Logan graduate, Dr. Moore graduated Summa Cum Laude and received the Health Center Achievement Award.

Our Condolences to ••• The family of Edmund Herbert, D.C. '57, who passed away on June 5. Dr. Herbert practiced in Prescott, Ariz.

The family of George Arvidson, D.C. '43, who suffered a fatal heart attack on July 3. Dr. Arvidson maintained practices in St. Paul and New Brighton, Minn. until the time of his death. He was a former president of the Minnesota Chiropractic Association and of the National Federation of Chiropractic Examining Boards. The Federation appointed him to the Board of Directors of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners in 1987.

Dr. Arvidson drafted the first code of ethics for the American Chiropractic Association, and served as chairman of the Association's ethics committee. He also founded and served as chairman of the ACA Political Action Committee. He received four meritorious service awards from the ACA. Dr. Arvidson served on the Minnesota Board of Health, and on the Minnesota Governor's Health Advisory Board.

Logan Archives Featured in Journal of Chiropractic Education An article in the December, 1990 issue of the journal of Chiropractic Education, written by Joseph Keating, Jr., Ph.D., praised the efforts of Dr. Vi Nickson, and her late husband, Dr. Art Nickson, in developing the College Archives. Dr. Keating is a professor at Palmer College of Chiropractic-West, and is vice president of the National Institute of Chiropractic Research, which sponsored his visit to Logan.

The following is a condensation of Dr. Keating's article, "A Visit to the Logan College Archives:" As a student of chiropractic history I had for years heard tales of the fine historical collection at Logan College of Chiropractic, and looked forward to a pleasant afternoon of rummaging through the archives. Little did I imagine what was in store for me.

Words cannot adequately describe what Drs. Vi and Art Nickson have accomplished quietly over the past twenty years at Logan College. The archives rooms at Logan are without a doubt the finest and broadest collection of chiropractic artifacts and memorabilia in the world.

Crammed floor to ceiling in several undersized rooms, closets and the furnace area in the subbasement is a history of the chiropractic profession which staggers the imagination. The collection ... includes thousands of photographs, diplomas, class albums, books, journals, adjusting tables, newspaper clippings, ancient X-ray equipment, familiar and not so familiar (some quite bizarre) diagnostic and therapeutic devices, and the records of several chiropractic colleges including Logan Basic, Carver, Missouri, and the Universal.

Overwhelmed by what was available and with no sensible place to begin, I opened a drawer at random. Out came the personal memoirs of Willard Carver, LLB., D.C., attorney, chiropractor, friend of D.D. Palmer, and president from 1906 until his death in

1943 of four chiropractic colleges.

In another drawer was the personal correspondence of Drs. Hugh B. and Vinton F. Logan, founders of the Logan Basic school.

Certainly, a few other colleges merit honorable mention, including the Palmer archives in Davenport and the B.J. Museum in Sarasota, Florida, which is operated by Life College. Yet nowhere else has so much of the profession's legacy been accumulated as at Logan.

In a very real sense, the Logan collection is the property and responsibility of all in the profes-

sion who value chiropractic history.

Dr. Vi Nickson, still going strong after more than 50 years in chiropractic, deserves the heartiest congratulations from the profession. And Logan College, which has supported the Nicksons' efforts with what resources it could, needs the help of the chiropractic profession to properly preserve the physical evidence of the profession's first century.

Health Center Faculty and Interns Provide Physicals for Youth Sports Program Participants Volunteers from Trimesters 6-10, supervised by Health Center clinicians, performed physical examinations for approximately 800 National Youth Sports Program participants.

The government-sponsored summer recreation/sports program requires that each child have a complete physical examination in order to participate. The children's ages ranged from 9 to 14.

The faculty and interns spent four days performing the examinations, at Harris-Stowe State College and at Forest Park Community College, both in St. Louis. An average of 25

to 30 interns participated each day, with Drs. Eileen Powers-Pate, David Pisani, Pierre Chapuis, and Kathleen O'Brien.

In addition to physical exams, the faculty and interns provided basic instruction in recognizing health problems. They also demonstrated breast self-examinations for girls participating in the program, and their mothers.

Work by Major Artist Adorns Health Center

The Trova sculpture

A nine feet tall metal sculpture by the noted American sculptor and painter Ernest Trova has been given to the College, and is now displayed in the Health Center lobby. Trova, creator of the famed "Falling Man" series of works, is considered one of the most important artists on the contemporary art scene.

The sculpture was given to the College by art collector Robert Lococo. Long one of the Midwest's

best-known interior designers, Lococo was until recently Director of the Philip Samuels Fine Art Gallery in St. Louis, Trova's primary dealer.

Lococo has now formed a fine art publishing company, LococoMulder, in New York City. The sculpture was commissioned by Lococo and was displayed in his home until he contributed it to Logan.

Trova completed the sculpture in

1983. It is titled "Abstract Variation."

Instrumental in the donation of the sculpture was Dr. E. L. Strotheide of Granite City, Ill., a Logan graduate and member of the Board of Trustees. Dr. Strotheide, an art collector and owner of a Trova work himself, is a friend of Lococo and acquainted him with the Logan campus.

Research on Reliability of Palpation Device Underway The reliability of the Chiropractic Palpation PadÂŽ, which shows great promise for providing much increased palpation sensitivity, is being studied by Logan faculty members Ralph Barrale, D.C., Ralph Filson, D.C., and Robert Diamond, D.C. Prior to developing protocols for the research study, the three conducted private trials, which indicated that the Chiropractic Palpation Pad could well be an important breakthrough in amplifying palpation skills.

The Chiropractic Palpation Pad is a modification of the patented Sensor PadÂŽ, invented by Earl Wright of Inventive Products, Inc. The Sensor Pad, which greatly

enhances the sense of touch, is being used world-wide as a breast self-examination aid for women.

Wright says that his device is to palpation what the stethoscope is to auscultation.

Drs. Barrale and Filson had discussions with Wright which led to the modification of the Sensor Pad for chiropractic examinations. The Chiropractic Palpation Pad is transparent, allowing visualization of the surrounding soft tissues as it enhances static and motion palpation of the spine and joints.

The pad also can be used for some therapeutic purposes; e.g., it can be used in conjunction with the Nimmo technique.

Drs. Filson and Barrale also are developing a seminar on the use of the Chiropractic Palpation Pad. The seminar will be offered through the Logan Postgraduate Department.

Beginning this fall, Logan students also will be taught utilization of the Chiropractic Palpation Pad in technique courses. The Sensor Pad will be used in the Clinical Science Division's physical diagnosis laboratory.

Guest Speakers Visit Campus

Enthusiastic guest speaker, Eugene Sparlin, D.C. Logan's chapter of Student ACA held its annual "SACA Day" on May 23. Visiting the campus for the occasion was Dr. Reeve Askew, ACA Board liaison to the Student ACA. Dr. Askew spoke to the student body on the organization of the ACA, its short and long-range goals, and the ACA's current legislative activities.

Dr. Susan Andrew '81 of Tulsa, Okla. also visited the campus recently, and met separately with Trimesters 8, 9, and 10. Dr. Andrew lectured on practice management.

Dr. Eugene Sparlin '52 of Atlanta, Ga. spent a day on campus, speaking to Trimesters 8, 9, and 10 on "The 'Up' Side of Associateships."

Dr. Sparlin emphasized the benefits of associating; in particular, the opportunity to work with, and learn from, a doctor who is successful in practice.

Drs. Joe Accurso '68 of Miami, Fla. and Tom Pasterski '70 of Margate, Fla. also were recent visitors to campus. Hosted by the College at the request of Student ICA and the Philosophy Club, Ors. Accurso and Pasterski spoke to the entire student body. They discussed the philosophy of chiropractic and practice management.

Logan Volleyball Team Plays Undergraduate and Other Chiropractic College Teams Previous issues of the Tower have reported the active schedules of the Logan Ice Hockey Club and Soccer Club. The coed Logan Volleyball Club also has maintained a busy schedule of league and intercollegiate play.

Under the leadership of captains Jim Hoven and Jeff Barker (both Trimester 10), the club has played in leagues sponsored by the West St. Louis County YMCA, and has participated in tournaments held at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Palmer College of Chiropractic, and at Maryville University, located in West St. Louis County.

There are 12 active Club members, six of whom form a competitive (or power) team.

Club members also serve as referees for YMCA league games, which are played on the sand volleyball court on the Logan campus.

The power team played in CMCC's tournament, held in January of each year, in 1990 and in 1991, taking 2nd place in 1990. The team took 1st place honors in Maryville's tournament, held in April of this year. In addition to several Maryville

club teams, the tournament's roster included teams from several other local colleges and universities, including Washington and St. Louis Universities.

The Club hosted a tournament on Memorial Day, which attracted teams from local colleges and universities, and two teams from Palmer College. The tournament offered competition at the power and recreational levels, and the Palmer teams won in both categories.

The Logan team also played in a tournament at Palmer in mid-July, taking 1st place. In addition to the two chiropractic college dubs, some other teams from the Davenport, la. area competed in the tournament.

(National College of Chiropractic also had planned to participate, but cancelled due to players' scheduling conficts.)

An indoor volleyball tournament is planned at Logan, the weekend of September 28. The Club hopes to have two competitive divisions in this tournament, one for chiropractic colleges, and one for other local colleges and universities.

STAR Donors Award $26,800 to College Departments (A list of STAR donors is on page 30.)

The Logan Alumni Association held a meeting for its "Send to Alumni Regularly" donors during Homecoming. The STAR donors who were present voted to award $26,800 to the following College divisions and departments, to purchase the equipment indicated: Basic Science Division - $1,000 for one clinical (teaching) microscope Chiropractic Science Division $2,500 for a surface recording heat instrument with a graph, for use in spinal analysis labs and technique research Clinical Science Division - $2,500 for clinical competency models Clinical Services (Health Centers) $1,200 for a modem communica-

tion system for Dellwood and Community Health Centers (to link their financial information with the campus system); $1,000 for floor stands and a wall holder for patient education materials; $600 for professional wall charts for each treatment room for patient education Financial Aid - $13,000 for the SelfPerpetuating Alumni Scholarship (the scholarship fund now consists of $79,684) Media Production Center - $3,000 for a wireless microphone system for all classrooms Student Services - $2,000 for the Student Loan Fund (the loan fund presently consists of $18,000)

SDC Holds Awards Day

Phonathon Update The primary component of Logan's 1990 Annual Giving Program was a phonathon, staffed by Logan student volunteers who spent many fall and winter evenings contacting alumni. Doug Stirrat, Director of Institutional Development, reports that donations resulting from the phonathon now total $73,323, and contributions are still coming in.

The number of alumni who made pledges was 717. The money is being used to help renovate classrooms, and to help pay off the principal on the loan which funded the construction of the Science, Research, and Ergonomics Center.

Our thanks to the many generous alumni, and the student volunteers who made the phonathon so successful!

The award recognizes outstanding service to the SOC. The SOC faculty award was presented to Dr. Gary Casper, Chairperson of the Chiropractic Science Division; the administrative award was given to Dr. Donald Christy, Dean of Admissions and Student Services, and the staff award was presented to Bob Snyders, Reference Librarian.

In addition to Sweat and Borst,

other outgoing SOC officers were recognized: Treasurer Kraig Phares and Secretary Terry Schlatter, both then Trimester 9; Diana Tucker, then Trimester 8, Upper Tris Professional Committee Representative; and Lonnie Crafton, then Trimester 6, Lower Tris Professional Committee Representative. Outgoing committee chairpersons Chuck Vallee, Mike Landers, Chuck Portwood, Lisa Sipp, Stephanie Nago, and Chuck Plante also were recognized. (All were then Trimester 9 except Landers, who was Trimester 8.)

The SOC presented certificates of appreciation to the following faculty members: Ors. Donald Christy, Allen Parry, Ralph Filson, Michael Wittmer, George Goodman, Ralph Barrale, Robert Diamond, and Gary Casper. Several staff members also received certificates of appreciation: Jane Fowler, Betty Maness, Sue Fredericks, Sharon Kehrer, Ann Carter, Rose Jordan, and Robert Brueggemann.

Hugh B. Logan Society Focuses on Expansion of College Endowment The Hugh B. Logan Society, which originated in 1988, is an organization of alumni and friends of Logan College who have dedicated themselves to helping the College create a substantial endowment. The program is directed by Dr. James Lehman '72 and W. Douglas Stirrat, Director of Institutional Development.

The College endowment consists of principal funds, which normally cannot be spent. Interest generated by the principal allows the College to expand its financial base, ensuring continued growth and financial stability. Says Stirrat, "In the past few months several doctors have joined in this important commitment to their Alma Mater. Their membership in the Hugh B. Logan Society helps ensure that the College will continue to educate men and women in chiropractic into the next century."
