PROFILE: Dr. Ronald Harris, Chairperson of the Board The Winter issue of the Tower announced the election of Dr. Ronald Harris of Ocala, Fla., as the new Chairperson of the Logan Board of Trustees. He has succeeded Dr. Gordon Toftness, who retired after serving as Chairperson since 1980.

Dr. Harris is a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors. A native of Granite City, Ill., he graduated from Logan in 1966, having taken the necessary prerequisite courses at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

A lifelong animal lover who now owns and lives on a horse farm, Dr. Harris completed science courses at SIU in order to qualify for admission to veterinary school. However, when his future brother-in-law (Dr. E.L. Strotheide) invited Dr. Harris to visit Logan and observe classes, he became

so intrigued by chiropractic that he changed his career plans.

After his graduation from Logan, Dr. Harris and his wife, Kitty, moved to Perrine, Fla., where he practiced for 17 years before their move to Ocala.

Dr. and Mrs. Harris have two grown children. The entire family has been very involved with the operation of Southern Breeze Farm, which is managed by their daughter. Southern Breeze Farm shares a % mile training track with ten other farms located within a 620-acre complex. Many thoroughbred race horses have been trained on this track.

A typical day for Dr. Harris begins at 5:00 a.m., and he takes delight in the hours he spends with his 12 horses. "The farm is my discharge station," he says. "Everybody needs a way to deal with stress - for me, it's rubbing the neck of a brood mare."

In addition to working on his farm, and maintaining a busy family practice, Dr. Harris reviews claims for insurance companies. He feels strongly about the importance of such review within the chiropractic profession. "The public must have a forum to determine if health services have been rendered properly," he says.

Dr. Harris previously served on the Logan Board of Trustees in 1977-1978.

He was required to resign as a College trustee when he accepted a position on the Board of Governors of the ACA. The rule prohibiting ACA Governors from serving on chiropractic college boards eventually was removed from the Association's bylaws, and Dr. Harris rejoined the Logan Board in 1986. However, he was again compelled to resign the following year, when he became Executive Vice President of the ACA. Dr. Harris served as the Association's Executive Vice President until 1989, and rejoined the Logan Board in 1990.

Dr. Harris says that his chief priority as Chairperson of the Board is ensuring that the College maintains financial stability. "I'm a fiscal conservative, and I feel that. a financially sound institution is a good institution. The role of the Board is to establish institutional policies, and the role of the Administration is to handle the day-to-day implementation of those policies.

"I want members of the Logan community to know that I'm accessible, and I think that accessibility will help me in being knowledgeable of the many issues an institution like Logan must address."

Dr. Harris also describes himself as direct, honest, tireless, and committed to educational excellence. "The amount of knowledge and technology that we have gained since I was a chiropractic student is phenomenal," he says. "The diagnostic equipment, information from research studies, and new teaching methods put the student and the young D.C. today at a great advantage. Logan students must continue to benefit from these advancements."

Like many leaders within the chiropractic profession, Dr. Harris is very concerned about the possible elimination of the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) program (see story concerning this issue on p. 11). "We must not only retain access to the HEAL program for our students, but we must obtain access to more health profession educational loans," he says.

Despite periodic threats to the growth of the chiropractic profession, such as the possible discontinuation of the HEAL program, Dr. Harris feels that the profession has a very strong future. "I wouldn't hesitate to encourage any person, who has the desire and ability, to become a doctor of chiropractic," he says. "Chiropractic offers the consumer an alternative form of health care, and we give up universal acceptance in order to offer that alternative.

"However, we can take pride in the fact that our care is based on the reality that no doctor heals a patient's body. A surgeon does not heal a wound, but assists the wounded body in healing itself by bringing the torn tissue together, normalizing its structure. Chiropractic is not mystical it's simply a response to structural problems.

"Many doctors look at death as their enemy, but I feel our enemy is pain. If you can relieve one person's pain Jor one minute, you are a success. If we afford someone a better quality of life than that person would have had otherwise, we succeed."

Construction of the Tower: A Complicated Job Most Logan students, faculty, and alumni walk past the bell tower in front of the College's main building, giving little thought to how the landmark came to be.

Not so Ernest Koestering, who was a consultant for the Concrete Steel and Structures Company, the subcontractor which handled the precasting and prestressing of the tower's component parts (see box on this page). Following the construction of the tower in 1960, Koestering, an engineer who graduated from Purdue University, went on to become a nationally recognized expert in the structural use of prestressed concrete.

The tower, designed by the Leo A. Daly Company, was to be the dominant feature on what was then the Maryknoll Order's campus. At that time, only a few buildings in the St. Louis area had been constructed using prestressed concrete, which greatly minimizes cracking due to wind pressure or stresses incurred during erection. Koestering encouraged the use of prestressing in the tower's construction process. "I stopped by to take a

Koestering explains that posttensioning, the prestressing method which was used in the tower's construction, follows the pouring of the concrete into its casting mold.

The concrete is poured around

reinforcing tensions, which are then stressed using a hydraulic system.

The hydraulic jack imposes a weight load equal to or greater than the weight load which the component part will endure during erection and after construction is completed.

Koestering says this technology, developed in France, was first used in the U.S. in 1949, for a bridge in Philadelphia.

After the tower's legs were cast on site, two 35-ton cranes, with a yoke connected to the tower's base plate, were used to erect each leg without damaging the concrete.

Platforms and scaffolding towers were then built to enable workers to attach the grilles and install the roof and cross (see footnote in the box on this page). Gamble Construction, a now-defunct firm res pons i b Ie for many concrete construction projects in the St. Louis area, built the tower.

"It was a very complicated job, but an exciting and unusual one," recalls Koestering. "In terms of structure and technology, it was a first for St. Louis."

the tower, extending 40 feet above the roof, bringing the overall height of the structure to 120 ft. The horizontal arm of the cross was removed when Logan purchased the campus in 1973.

Dr. Gregg Becomes President of the ICA Dr. R. James Gregg '71, of Garden City, Mich. has been elected President of the International Chiropractors Association.

Dr. Gregg, who has been a leader in obtaining hospital privileges for Doctors of Chiropractic, is Chief of the Department of Chiropractic at New Center Hospital in Detroit, Mich., one of the first hospitals in the nation to grant hospital privileges to chiropractors. The hospital currently has 35 D.C.'s on staff. In addition to his work at the hospital, Dr. Gregg has maintained what he describes as a high-volume practice in Garden City since graduation from Logan.

Dr. Gregg previously served as Central Regional Director of the ICA. He also has served as President and Chairman of the Board of the Michigan Chiropractic Council, and as Representative Assemblyman for the ICA. He is now Chairman of the Michigan Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

As President of the ICA, Dr. Gregg plans to focus on encouraging and helping doctors to educate the public about all the ways in which subluxations affect the body.

"Too many chiropractors have been unwilling to talk about the subluxation complex and its effects on the body. We need to let people know how much impact chiropractic care can have on overall health. I hope we can spur more research efforts in this area, too. We've demonstrated that chiropractic care works for musculoskeletal problems, and now we need studies demonstrating that the correction of subluxations can bring about dramatic improvement in many visceral conditions.

"The ICA does not want chiropractors to be relegated to the role of simple musculoskeletal specialists. Every day in chiropractors' offices, patients with many nonmusculoskeletal problems become well. We shouldn't be afraid to talk about the fact that this happens, or to explain why it happens."

Dr. Gregg reports that the ICA's current plans to enhance public education about the subluxation complex include a document which the practitioner could give to

patients, insurance personnel, etc.

The publication would include thorough information about the clinical evidence of the vertebral subluxation complex and its visceral and somatic effects. "We are just in the early planning stages with this project," says Dr. Gregg. "We haven't decided yet what the format for the publication will be, but we plan to put together a very effective. tool for the practicing doctor to use."

Under Dr. Gregg's leadership, the ICA has completed the development of two diplomate programs,

the Council on Chiropractic Imaging, and the Council on Applied Chiropractic Science, to be offered through the chiropractic colleges.

"These programs are strongly subluxation-oriented," says Dr. Gregg.

In the political arena, the ICA is continuing its efforts to ensure coverage of the full costs of chiropractic care through Medicare, which currently does not cover the cost of patients' X-rays when ordered by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Dr. Gregg and other ICA leaders also have been very involved in recent lobbying efforts regarding the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) issue. The HEAL program is the only federally funded health profession educational loan program for which chiropractic students are eligible, and it is in danger of being discontinued. (See article on the HEAL situation on page 11.)

The ICA also is committed to helping Doctors of Chiropractic to obtain hospital privileges, and is benefitting from Dr. Gregg's leadership and expertise in this area. He has served as an instructor for the ICA seminar entitled Hospital Privileges and Protocol.

Logan Graduate Inaugurated as President of Texas Chiropractic College

Dr. Shelby "S.M." Elliott '52 recently was inaugurated as President of Texas Chiropractic College, in Pasadena, Texas. Dr. Elliott also is a graduate of TCC, having studied during a time when there was less standardization of curricula and required techniques at the chiropractic colleges. After his graduation from TCC, Dr. Elliott completed two years of additional study and an internship at Logan, earning his second D.C. degree.

Dr. Elliott has held many leadership positions within the chiropractic profession. He has served as President of the Texas Chiropractic Association and as President of the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examin-

ers. He served for nine years on the Board of Governors of the American Chiropractic Association, and also has served as Chairman of the Board of the ACA. Dr. Elliott has owned the Elliott Chiropractic Clinic in Dayton, Tex. since 1952. He has been a civic leader in the Dayton area, especially active with the Dayton Rotary Club and the Dayton American Legion Post.

Among the many distinguished guests at Dr. Elliott's inauguration were Logan President, Dr. Beatrice Hagen, and Logan Clinical Director, Dr. Ronald Grant. Dr. Grant formerly served on the faculty at TCC.

Edward Glover, D.C. '53, who has been elected Councilman-at-Large for the Peoria, Ill. City Council. Dr. Glover practices in Peoria.

James Fleming, D.C. '60, of Mountain Lake, Minnesota. Dr. Fleming was named "Chiropractor of the Year" by the Minnesota Chiropractic Association. Dr. Fleming was honored at a banquet held during the Association's convention in April. Many members of his family, including his daughter, Dr. Terra Fleming '90, attended the banquet.

Addendum In our last issue, we announced the service of student Jim Laux in Operation Desert Storm. (Laux has now returned to Logan.) After we went to press, we learned that an alumnus, Dr. Michael Lindstrom '90 served in the medical corps in Saudi Arabia.

Vaughan Dabbs, D.C. and Lisa Dabbs, D.C., both '87, whose article "Correlation Between Disc Height Narrowing and Low-Back Pain" was published in the December 1990 issue of the prestigious international medical journal, Spine. The article was based on the senior research project which the Ors. Dabbs conducted as students at Logan.

Dr. Lehman Chairs Lovelace Chiropractic Service Department Dr. James Lehman '72 of Albuquerque, N.M., is the Chairman of Lovelace Chiropractic, a new patient service of Lovelace, Inc. of New Mexico.

Owned by the Cigna Corporation, an insurance company based in Philadelphia, Lovelace, Inc. is an integrated health care organization. It consists of a hospital, satellite patient care facilities, a multispecialty physician group practice, and the Lovelace Health Plan. The Lovelace Health Plan is New Mexico's oldest and largest HMO. Chiropractic health care has been available to members of the Lovelace Health Plan since 1985, through participating practitioners. "Many people in New Mexico request and utilize chiropractic care. The customer satisfaction and demand within Lovelace's HMO have been so strong that the organization chose to offer its own chiropractic service," explains Dr. Lehman. "I believe this is the first time in the history of health care that a provider as well-known as Lovelace has instituted its own chiropractic services department."

Lovelace Chiropractic will be part of Lovelace's satellite patient care system. "Our office is located in the

center of Albuquerque, in a very accessible area," says Dr. Lehman.

"We have two doctors, including myself. We expect our patient load to grow quickly, however, and our facility has enough space that we can bring in a third doctor when it becomes necessary.

"When we treat patient emergencies after hours or on weekends, we will do so in the emergency room of

the Lovelace Medical Center. Eventually, we also hope to obtain staff privileges at the Medical Center."

The chiropractic services department is part of Lovelace's Division of Occupational Medicine, and injured patients initially examined at one of Lovelace's 10 urgent-care facilities are referred for chiropractic care. "Some of our marketing efforts also will be targeted to fee-for-service patients outside the Lovelace system," says Dr. Lehman.

Edward Sweetser, M.D., Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Lovelace, Inc. has worked with Dr. Lehman in the planning of chiropractic services for Lovelace. "Dr. Sweetser has been very supportive and open-minded about chiropractic care," says Dr. Lehman.

In order to be a full provider with Lovelace Chiropractic, a doctor must be Board eligible in orthopedics (qualified to take exams for the Diplomate, American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists). Dr. Lehman, who is in the process of taking the Board exams, is now the only full provider. The resident provider, Dr. Richard Duchesne (Logan, '89), is currently enrolled in Logan's postgraduate course in orthopedics.

Logan Alumnae Featured in ACA Journal's "Women in Chiropractic" Issue The ACA journal featured four Logan alumnae in its February issue, which focused on women who are leaders in the chiropractic profession.

Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen authored the "Outlook" column, a regular journal feature in which guest writers offer their opinions on issues of interest to the chiropractic profession. Dr. Hagen reminisced about her own distinguished career, and discussed the exceptional opportunities the profession offers to women. She wrote, " ... if there ever was a profession that recognized the abilities of women and their importance as equals, that profession is chiropractic."

female doctors discussed their experiences and professional priorities. Dr. Robin Hunter '86 of Columbus, Oh. wrote about the. inspiration she received as a student from Logan administrators, faculty members, and alumni. Dr. Hunter served as national vice chairperson of the Student ACA. Following graduation, she became involved with the ACA Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness. She currently serves as treasurer of the Council.

Dr. Faye Eagles '53 of Rocky Mount, N.C., the first woman to receiv.e the ACA's Doctor of the Year award, urged women in chiropractic to become politically invo Ived, for the good of the profession and the public. She is a long-time leader in the North

Carolina Republican party and is chairman of the party's second.state congressional district. ~ Dr. Marianne Gengenbach 'Bl wrote about how her personal interest in sports led to her professional specialization as a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. Dr. Gengenbach is a member of the editorial boards of the Chiropractic Sports Medicine Journal and D.C. Tracts, and serves as president of the Academy of Chiropractic Sports Physicians. She is Associate Professor and Coordinator of Clinical Education at Logan, and serves on the College's postgraduate faculty.

She played a leading role in the devefopment of the College's postgraduate certification program in sports injury management.

Students Lobby for Reauthorization of HEAL Program Logan students have been extremely active in efforts to make legislators aware of the importance of continuing the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) program, targeted for a phaseout by the Bush Administration. The HEAL program is important to all health care educational programs, but especially to the chiropractic profession, because chiropractic students have been excluded from other health profession student loan programs.

According to Logan's Director of Financial Aid, Jean Short, other general loan programs, available to students in any educational field, may be obtained by chiropractic students. "Most of our students have Stafford (formerly GSL) or Perkins (formerly NDSL) loans. However, the HEAL program is very important to us, because the Stafford and Perkins loans rarely cover a student's entire budget, so many students supplement their financial aid packages with the HEAL program. And, a student with a higher financial need, such as someone who is married with children, is likely to be meeting a large percentage of his or her expenses through the HEAL program. Our percentage of HEAL loans is somewhat lower than those of some of the other chiropractic colleges, but, in a given year, up to 50% of Logan students utilize the HEAL program."

Logan students attended a rally and assembly held in March which focused on the HEAL issue, and many participated in an extensive letter-writing campaign, contacting their Senate and Congressional representatives.

Nine Logan students travelled to Washington D.C. on March 20 for a fiveday visit to meet with members of Congress regarding the HEAL issue. The students lobbied for the continuation of the HEAL program, and for the inclusion of chiropractic students in the Health Professions Student Loan Program (HPSL). The HPSL would be expanded under the Bush plan, but would continue to exclude chiropractic students.

According to Charles Portwood, President of the Logan Student ACA (SACA) chapter and legislative chairperson of the Student Doctors Council, the Bush administration's plan justifies the continued exclusion of chiropractic education from the HPSL, citing high HEAL default rates for chiropractic graduates, as compared to allopathic health professionals who have received

HEAL loans. However, Portwood explains, "The HEAL default rates at all the chiropractic colleges are decreasing.

Also, there really is no basis for comparing our graduates with those in other health professions. Since the HEAL program is only a few years old, many medical school graduates' loans are only now coming due, because their loans were deferred during their residencies.

We wanted to discuss these facts, as well as chiropractic health care with legislators, since the validity of our profession also is questioned in the Bush plan."

In addition to Portwood, the student delegation which travelled to Washington included: Charles Weiss, President of the Logan Student ICA; Jeanne Schmidt, Vice President of Logan SACA; Kevin Goben, Logan SACA Treasurer; John Simmons, Logan SACA representative; Lydia Kinkead, Logan SACA representative; Lynn Borst, Vice President of the Logan Student Doctors Council; and Chris Heeb and Gregory Wright, editors of the Basic Examiner, a student publication which has applied for a charter as the College's official student newspaper.

The legislators with whom the students met included Senators Danforth and Bond of Missouri, Nunn and Fowler of Georgia, D'Amato of New York, Packwood of Oregon, Boren of Oklahoma, Kerry of Nebraska, Simon of Illinois, and Mazzoli of Kentucky, and U.S. representatives Horn, Gephardt,

Clay, and Wheat of Missouri, Hoagland of Nebraska, Darden of Georgia, and Horton of New York. Most of the legislators were not available for lengthy discussions, but the students held detailed discussions of the educational loan issues with congressional aides.

Arrangements for the congressional appointments were made by officials of the national Student ACA. "Every chapter of SACA was represented," reports Portwood. "And, of the 48 legislators' offices visited by chiropractic students, Logan students visited 23. The people with whom we met responded well, and we had opportunities to educate many of them about chiropractic health care. Several representatives and congressional staff members commented on the number of letters which have been received on the HEAL issue; they were impressed that chiropractic students have rallied around the issue.

Our meeting with the College's Congressional district representative, Joan Kelly Horn, was especially positive.

"Everyone who was involved in our trip worked very hard, and we feel proud that SACA and SICA were able to work very well together in addressing a common concern."

Logan alumni received a letter from Dr. Hagen regarding the HEAL issue in March, emphasizing the importance of contacting legislators on behalf of the (continued on page 12)

Dr. Guy Fanelli has been appointed Director of Chirotherapy in the College Health Centers. He supervises interns in their planning and use of chirotherapy and also serves as a consultant to the interns in treatment planning.

Dr. Fanelli, a native of Utica, N.Y., is a December '90 graduate. He previously received the B.S. in Human Biology from Logan.

Dr. Ruth Birch has been named Assistant Professor of Basic Science.

Dr. Birch received a Ph.D. in immunology and physiology from the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center. She also received a Master ·of Science (in molecular

biology) from the U. of 1.- Chicago Medical Center, and a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Illinois-ChampaignUrbana.

Dr. Birch will teach Physiology II at Logan. She previously taught immunology, physiology, and microbiology, during teaching appointments at the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University, Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville, the Washington University School of Medicine, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Dr. Birch also spent four years as Director of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory at St. Louis Children's Hospital, and two years as a research

The winners of two awards presented at the December 1990 graduation ceremony were inadvertently overlooked in the Honors list of December '90 graduates, published on p. 15 of the last issue of the Tower.

Drs. Karen Hanse~·and . Robert Einertson were recipients of the Student Doctor Award, and Drs. Scott Ehlermann, Terra Fleming, and Daniel Fontanella received the Senior Research Project Award. Dr. Gary Casper, Chairperson of the Chiropractic Science Division, served as project adviser to the research award winners.

The Logan Alumni Association presents both awards and selects the winners from each graduating class. scientist at Vitek Systems, Inc. in St. Louis. Vitek Systems is the world's largest manufacturer of automated microbiology systems, and also produces a variety of manual test kits.

Dr. Birch's publications include articles which have appeared in the National Academy of Science Journal and Frontiers in Histamine Research. She has published numerous articles in the Journal of Immunology.

Bill Introduced to Allow Tax Deductions for Interest on Student Loan Repayments Jean Short, Director of Financial Aid, reports that Congressman Richard Schulze of Pennsylvania has introduced a bill which would reinstate the tax deductibility of interest on student loan repayments.

"If this bill is passed, it would save many people a great deal of money," says Short. "Unfortunately, it is limiting in that the deduction reinstatement would only apply to loans coming due for the first time after December 31 of this year. So, the April '91 graduating class would be Logan's first group to benefit in

terms of repaying chiropractic education loans, since their loan repayments begin in January, 1992.

However, other Logan alumni could benefit, if they have children for whom they've taken out educational loans, and the loan repayments begin after December 31.

"I hope Logan alumni, students, and prospective students will take time to write to legislators about this

bill.", In correspondence or discussion with Congressional representatives, Congressman Schulze's bill should be referred to as H.R. 747.

Guest Speakers Help Students Prepare for the Future A variety of guest speakers from the chiropractic and other professions help students enhance their understanding of a variety of business, clinical, and other professional issues they will face when they begin practicing. Recently, Joe Donahue, D.C., Gary Street, D.C., Harry Roder, D.C., James Lehman, D.C., Larry Steele, D.C., Robert P. Sherman, J.D., Lee McKinley, M.D. and Lawrence Markson, D.C. visited the campus and lectured.

Dr. McKinley is a cardiologist who specializes in critical care, and also is an advocate of chiropractic treatment. He visited Logan with Dr. Steele, who is the alumni representative to the Board of Trustees. Dr. McKinley spoke to the Trimester 5, 6, and 7 classes, discussing diagnostic procedures for arthritides, clinical testing to determine the causes of physical problems, diabetes, and chiropractic referral cases.

Dr. Steele spoke to the Trimester 7 class on biomechanics and the utilization of the Logan system of body mechanics.

Attorney Robert Sherman is the author of the book Risk Management: Developing Malpractice Prevention Strategies. During his day on campus, Sherman addressed the faculty, and later spoke to students in Trimesters 6 through 10.

Dr. Roder spoke about ConceptTherapy as it relates to the chiropractic profession, with emphasis on the cause of disease. Dr. Roder became affiliated with the Concept-

1955. He has taught in various parts of the world for the past 30 years, sharing speaking platforms with such notables as Norman Vincent Peale, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Astronaut Capt. Eddie Mitchell, and others.

Dr. Donahue visited campus to speak to Dr. Gary Casper's Trimester 5 philosophy class, and also accepted an invitation from the Canadian Club to address all interested students during the 10:10 a.m. class break. Members of the Canadian Club became interested in Dr. Donahue after reading an article he published in the Canadian Chiropractic Journal, entitled, "The Philosophy of Chiropractic: Lessons from the Past - Guidance for the Future."

According to Trimester 9 student Jenny Crosby, President of the Canadian Club, Dr. Donahue advocates a new direction in the philosophy of chiropractic. Doctors and students would apply chiropractic research results and conclusions to chiropractic principles and procedures. Dr. Donahue encouraged the formation of a philosophy club at Logan, in which students would discuss journal articles and their relevance to patient care. He also recommends that doctors in the field initiate similar discussions with their colleagues.

Delta Sigma Chi invited Dr. Street to speak. His presentation on prac-

tice management covered associateship s, and accumulation and systematic management of capital.

Dr. Markson is an author, lecturer, and educator in the philosophy of chiropractic, and practice management. He addressed the entire student body the morning of his visit, and spoke to students in Trimesters 7, 8, and 9 in afternoon. He lectured on practice management skills and procedures.

Dr. Markson heads Markson Management Service, a management consultant firm, and is a faculty member at New York Chiropractic College.

Dr. Lehman, a 1972 Logan graduate who practices in Albuquerque, N.M., gave a two-part workshop on "How to Open your Chiropractic Office" for upper-tri students.

Offered on two Saturdays during the fall and winter trimesters, the workshop was sponsored by the Logan Alumni Association. The workshop's content included motivation and maintaining the right mental attitude, how to associate successfully, and business planning for a first practice.

Trimester 9 student David Hackbarth enjoyed hearing Dr. Lehman's ideas on achieving success. "I think Dr. Lehman is a great role model for students, especially in terms of motivation and ethical standards.

He's the kind of doctor I want to be."

Attorney Robert Sherman spoke on risk management.

The workshop emphasized becoming skilled and prepared, while still a student, in non-clinical areas which are important to success in practice. "I haven't had much experience in public speaking, for example," says Hackbarth. "So, I know I need to work on that now, instead of waiting until after graduation. Dr. Lehman also brought up a lot of good points about patient education, which I can apply in the Clinic."

PAGE 19 Dr. Lehman's emphasis on how to maintain the right mental attitude also impressed Hackbarth. "It's easy to forget how much we control our outlook by what we tell ourselves," he says. "Dr. Lehman had us rate various areas of our lives on a scale of one to ten, and compare those ratings with our feelings about each area. The lesson is that your subconscious believes whatever you're telling it all the time - if you tell it, deliberately or not, that your life is a 'ten', you'll feel that way emotionally, and it will be easier to maintain a positive attitude."

The workshop also explored the pros and cons of associateship, and pitfalls to avoid in accepting an associateship. "Many of us would probably tend to make some of the mistakes he warned us about, if we weren't encouraged to think about these issues ahead of time," says Hackbarth. "It would be easy to trust too much, to accept a handshake deal for an associateship, or sign papers without having an attorney look at them."

During the practice management portion of the workshop, Dr. Lehman covered procedures for securing bank loans, building good credit, surveying areas to determine local awareness of chiropractic, community relations, and how to attract patients.

Hackbarth plans to attend as many guest presentations as he can before graduation. "Of course, some of the information may be repetitive," he says, "but you can't hear these things too many times."

Community Relations Expands Awareness of the College Sue Fredericks, Director of Community Relations, is determined that the Logan College name will be very familiar to community leaders in the St. Louis area. She is working hard to bring about such awareness, through numerous civic and political activities.

Fredericks was first employed by the College in 1985. Formerly an office manager for a dermatologist's office, she became the business manager for the on-campus Health Center. She joined the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce so that the College would become betterknown within the local business community. Feeling that her work with the Chamber was increasing Logan's name recognition, she became interested in joining other organizations. ¡in 1986, her current position was created, allowing her to provide service to many local groups. Although Fredericks plans the annual B.S. commencement program, and each trimester's D.C. graduation ceremony, she devotes most of her time to community work off campus, on behalf of the College.

"A company like Anheuser-Busch can give a lot to the community financially," says Fredericks. "Logan can't do that. But the College can offer services to the community, which come from me, and from our students."

Fredericks also emphasizes the need for building awareness of Logan among political leaders, so that the College can lobby effectively when legislation affecting the chiropractic profession is being enacted. Fredericks' work with the Chesterfield Chamber enabled her to become acquainted with Senator Thomas McCarthy, Chesterfield's representative to the Missouri Senate. Senator McCarthy eventually joined the Logan Board of Trustees.

Fredericks is now Senator McCarthy's district representative. She says that holding this position has enabled her to meet a number of local political leaders. "Chiropractors need to become involved in politics in much greater numbers," she says. "It takes time, but if you put forth some effort, eventually you can open many doors. With many legislative decisions that will affect chiropractic still to come, doctors can have an impact on their profession's future, if they work to develop political contacts."

In addition to serving as Chamber Secretary, and as Chairperson of the Chemical Dependency and Substance Abuse Committee for the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, Fredericks holds other organizational offices. For the past three years, she has served as chairperson of the Teddy Bear Tea, a fundraiser held by the Judevine

Center for Autism in St. Louis. The Teddy Bear Tea is part of the Judevine Center's annual Festival of Trees, a 10-day exhibit of beautifully decorated Christmas trees. The Festival also features entertainment, including the Teddy Bear Tea. Children attending the Tea are asked to bring teddy bear "escorts."

Fredericks also is active in the local chapter of Variety Club International, an organization which helps needy and handicapped children. She recently coordinated the Club's Carousel of Fashion fundraiser, and is a member of the committee which plans the Club's annual telethon. As part of her work with the planning committee, Fredericks arranged for Logan students to handle first aid at the telethon.

First aid is a much-needed service at the event, which draws a large studio audience, including 100 special children.

Fredericks also is on the Board of Directors and is Club Service Director of the Chesterfield Rotary Club; serves as Program/Physical/International Committee Chairperson for the YMCA of Greater St. Louis; and was chairperson of the fourth annual St. Louis Counts Ball. St. Louis Counts is an organization of volunteers who promote St. Louis County and actively work to attract new industry and jobs to the area.

THE TOWER/SPRING 1991 very involved in the planning of Chesterfield Days, a community event which will be held on the Logan campus June 21-23. Chesterfield Days will be sponsored by the Chesterfield Community Events Committee, a group with representatives from several civic organizations. The event is intended to draw families from the Chesterfield area, and will feature rides, booths, and social events. Fredericks explains, "This is a way to bring a lot of people onto the campus, so they can see our facilities, especially the clinic. There will be many roles for students to play, and opportunities to educate the public about chiropractic."

Fredericks finds many opportunities of her own to inform people about chiropractic. She says that frequently, members of the organizations she has joined ask questions about the profession. "We're still living under the old wives' tale of the bone-crackers," she says. "And many people still think a chiropractic degree is earned in six months.

There is a lot of public education to be done about chiropractic care, and about the high-quality education our students receive."

Fredericks receives are not always positive or constructive. "I've found, though, that if you don't let yourself be put on the defensive by critical comments, people respond by becoming more calm and open to what you have to say. I've been a chiropractic patient for years, and I know it works. But I have to be realistic; I can't convince everyone that chiropractic is effective. Instead, I focus on being enthusiastic and positive."

Fredericks also encourages Logan students to develop the skills they will need after graduation, for community involvement and leadership. She frequently recruits student volunteers to work at community events. She says, "I emphasize to students that if you give people opportunities to learn that you're a good person, they will listen to what you say about chiropractic, even if they know little about it, or have negative perceptions of it. But you have to roll up your sleeves, and donate your time and effort. Prove yourself as a good community person, and success will follow."

Disaster Preparedness Program Held A public panel discussion on disaster preparation was held at Logan College on April 4. Taking part were: Chief Kenneth Beekman of the Chesterfield Fire Department; Chief Ray Johnson of the Chesterfield Police Department; Michael Redman of the St. Louis County Police Department's Office of Emergency Management; KMOV-TV meteorologist Mike Roberts; and Dr. David Dickey of the Health Center faculty.

The panelists discussed preparedness for fires and tornadoes; how tornadoes develop within weather systems; and how emergency services are provided during and after disasters. Also, Dr. Dickey described several brochures on emergency health care which were available at the program.

Industrial Relations Preceptorships Provide New Opportunities for Students Dr. Patrick Venditti, Director of the Logan Ergonomics Center, reports that twelve students have successfully completed preceptorships offered through the Ergonomics Center. Five December '90 and seven April '91 graduates completed industrial relations preceptorships during the fall and winter trimesters.

Trimester 10 students currently spend the six weeks prior to graduation completing one or more preceptorship programs.

The industrial relations preceptorship is structured to include 40 contact hours, although, as is the case with most preceptorships, students typically work many addition a I hours. The five primary sessions are: Understanding Industry; Negotiating and Writing Proposals; Performing an Ergonomic Worksite Analysis; On-Site Ergonomic Workshop Participation; and Conducting an Industrial Research Survey. Some preceptorship students also attend one of the Ergonomics Center's weekend workshops for health, safety, and engineering personnel.

Dr. Robert Einertson, a December 1990 graduate, spent many hours contacting companies, attempting to reach decision makers in workmen's compensation, who then were sent questionnaires. Returned questionnaires were used to perform needs analyses for the companies. The Ergonomics Center rates companies it researches, and places them into one of three categories: 1) No significant workplace injury problems 2) Significant injury problems, not acknowledged or recognized by the company's management 3) Significant injury problems, for which the company's management desires a solution.

For any company he contacted which fell into the third category, Dr. Einertson performed a work-site analysis and developed a proposal of preventive strategies, such as employee workshops on how to reduce biomechanical stress with correct posture. He later gave such workshops at some of the companies he had contacted.

Dr. Einertson also obtained another skill during his industrial relations preceptorship. ¡ "We received thorough training in gait analysis, including the biomechanics of all types of bodily movements," he says. "I've participated in health fairs, and volunteered at 10K runs and other amateur athletic events, where I've performed gait analyses for many individuals. Athletes are very interested in changes they can make in their movements that will help them avoid injuries, or enhance athletic performance."

Now practicing in the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin, Dr. Einertson plans to continue outreach to industry in hopes of obtaining industrial consulting assignments.

"Industrial consulting is very interesting, and it gives you a good source of new patients," he says.

"Even though the ergonomic workshops I gave to company employees

focused on prevention, many of them asked for my advice about various existing musculoskeletal problems. In the process, many became interested in chiropractic care."

In addition to Dr. Einertson, the following members of the December 1990 graduating class completed preceptorships in industrial relations: Drs. Chris West, John Van Tassel, W. Brent Fetzer, and Dan Farina.

The April 1991 graduates who completed preceptorships offered through the Ergonomics Center are: Drs. Kimberly Jackson, Chad Larson, Anna Doyle, James Porter, Robert Possehl, Susan Banko, and Mark Delcalzo.

Dr. Goodman Re-Elected to CCE Post Dr. George Goodman, Vice President for Chiropractic Affairs, was recently re-elected as Vice Chairperson of the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education.

Dr. Goodman became a member

of the Commission on Accreditation in 1986 and was elected Secretary and a member of the executive committee in 1988. He served two terms as Secretary before being elected to his first term as Vice Chairperson.

Postgraduate Department to Offer New Program The Postgraduate Department of Logan College of Chiropractic, in conjunction with the postgraduate department of New York College of Chiropractic, will offer the Diplomate, American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP) course.

Dr. Allen Parry, Director of Postdoctoral and Related Education, explains that doctors who complete the new postgraduate program and who have completed the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) program, will be eligible to sit for the Diplomate examination developed and administered by the Academy of Chiropractic Sports Physicians, the testing arm of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. The ten session (120 hour) CCSP program will continue to be offered by the Postdoctoral and Related Professional Education Department of Logan College. Doctors wishing to sit for the diplomate examination may take the CCSP and DACBSP courses concurrently, or one before the other, in whichever order they prefer.

The new program will be available in three locations: St. Louis, Mo., Newark, N.J., and Orlando, Fla. The first seminar is scheduled in Orlando, on August 24-25, in conjunction with the Florida Chiropractic

Association convention. Dr. Parry expects to announce schedules for the other two locations, in a mailing in late spring or early summer.

The list of presenters for the course is not yet completed. However, Dr. Parry explains that the course will provide an interdisciplinary view of athletic injuries. "We are very excited about this new

program," says Dr. Parry. "Logan College has maintained a firm commitment to the sports chiropractic specialization, which has been demonstrated by several of our alumni who are leaders in this area: Drs. John Danchik, Thomas Hyde, Marianne Gengenbach, and Robin Hunter."

Caduceus Club Members Perform Postural Analyses The Health Centers sponsored a booth at the "Working Women's Survival Show," held at the Cervantes Convention Center in downtown St. Louis, February 22-24. Crowds estimated at more than 60,000 attended the annual event.

The Caduceus Club, under the leadership of Club President David Flatt (Trimester 9) operated the booth. More than 30 interns took turns staffing the booth. They offered posture analyses and also distributed information about chiropractic. Using a spinal analyis machine (SAM), the students performed more than 100 posture analyses, and made recommendations for alleviating any postural problems. A TV monitor in the booth that showed continuous tapes on chiropractic was funded by the Missouri State Chiropractic Association. Members of the Caduceus Club also have used the College's spinal analysis machine for demonstrations at other events, including a health fair at Webster University, located in the St. Louis suburb of Webster Groves.

The purchase of the spinal analysis machine was coordinated by Dr. Allen Parry, Director of Postdoctoral and Related Education.

Faculty Notes Guy Dauphin, M.S., Associate Professor of Basic Science, recently gave three seminars for registered nurses at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis County. The nurses work in the areas of neurology and neural science.

Robert Dunn, M.D., a neurosurgeon on staff at St. John's Mercy, invited Professor Dauphin to teach the seminars.

American Association of Community and Junior Colleges. Dr. Ramsey was recognized as a past Chairman of the Board of the Association and as a national leader in the community and junior college movement. While attending the meeting, he conferred with a number of college officials on prechiropractic curricula.

Research and Publications News The Consortium for Chiropractic Research held its quarterly meeting in Las Vegas on March 15-17. Logan College was represented at the meeting by Gary Sanders, Ph.D., Director of Research, and Deborah Lawson, D.C., Assistant Director of Research. The Consortium is made up of chiropractic colleges and other chiropractic organizations, with principal funding provided by the California Chiropractic Association.

The primary purpose of the recent meeting was to finalize program plans for the 2nd Consensus Conference on Chiropractic Techniques. The Conference will take place in Monterey, Cal. on June 2123 in conjunction with the 1991 meeting of the California Chiropractic Association/California Chiropractic Federation.

The Winter issue of Logan Speaks, which focused on research, listed many recent general and research publications of Logan faculty.
