Logan Alumni Celebrate Homecoming 1996 Logan alumni and their families shared memories of old times, absorbed vast amounts of information in professional semi nars and enjoyed the summer beauty of Logan's campus duri ng the college's 1996 Homecoming and CI<JSS Reunions.

H ighlights o( Homecoming included a Thursday evening (June 13) barbeque on the Logan campus, featurin g music provided by Greg Hewitt, disk jockey at popu lar KYKY-FM of St. Louis and son o( Logan Placement Director JoAnn Hewitt. As the sun set and the warm temperature cooled slightl y, Logan employees and alumni made their way to the open area in front of Hewitt's booth and danced the night away.

A contest between two alumni led to one o( the most humorous moments of the barbeque and to a scholarship donation to Logan College. D. Allen Chamberlain, DC, and Tom Smith, DC, both 1969 Logan graduates, placed a bet on a college footbal l game last fa ll.

They agreed that w hoever lost the bet

would donate $200 lo Logan's scholar· ship fund and push the oth er doctor in a w heelbarrow - during Homecoming, when th e check would be presented.

Dr. Smith, who practices in Wooster, O hio, lost the bet but gained a chance to have fun and help Logan College. True to his word, he goodnaturedly pushed a wheelbarrow, in which Dr. Chamberl ain was riding, across the front driveway on campus.

Both doctors presen ted the scholarship check to Logan President George A. Goodman, DC, FICC. Dr. Chamberl ain practices in Knoxville, Tenn.

This year th e Alumni Associa ti on planned the H1)mecoming schedule w ith no major events on Friday or Saturday evening in order to allow alumni more time to mingle inform<1lly with fri ends and classmates. The traditional Homecoming awards di nner was repla ed this year by an awards luncheon. The luncheon featured an update on Logan College by Dr. Goodman and presentation of Logan Alumni Associa tion Awards (see stories on pages 4 -6).

As always,there was plenty of fun to be had poolside anci in hospitality su ites, where Logan fra ternity and sorori ty members welcomed al umni.

Th e Logan A lumni Associatio n presented its 1996 awards to individuals w ho have made outs tanding contributions to Logan College and chiropracti c this year and throughout their ca reers. Recipients were recognized during presentati o ns at th e 1996 Ho mecoming awards luncheon, held June 15 at th e St. Loui s Airport Marri ott Hotel.

Receiving the Association's "Tower of Chiropracti c Award," w hich recognizes an individual whose contribution s to Logan College arc so great that he or she can never be forgotten, was Wi ll iam Ram sey, PhD, V ice Pres ident of Academ ic Affairs at Logan.

Dr. Ramsey has served in his post since 1981 . Since j o ining th e college, he has contributed experti se that he has ga ined in more than 30 years of work in educati on. He helped Logan secure its first accreditation from the North Central Associ ation of Colleges and Schools in 1987, and has led Logan's faculty in o ngoi ng eva luation and refi ning o f the college curriculum. Dr. Ramsey oversees Logan's academic, clinical, studen t serv ices and admissio ns departments and is th e college's liaison to professional and regional accrediting agencies and to sta te and nati onal chiropra ctic exa mining boards.

Tenn . Dr. Chamberl ain is a 1969 Logan graduate and was elected this yea r as a member of the Logan Alumni Associatio n Board of D irectors. Dr. Chamberlain also served on the Board of Directors from 1986 to 1994 and was a member of the Board's Advisory Board in 1995. He has served as educa ti onal coordinator for Logan Flomecoming celebrations since 1987 and has developed a video/audio tape-lending library for Logan alumni.

In addition to her work for Dr. Goodman, Carter has assisted w ith preparati ons for on-campus Logan Homecoming events and planned many social fun ctions hosted by th e college administrati on for graduating students, visili ng groups o f doc tors, govern mentaI representatives and o ther dignitari es.

Robert Copp, D C, and Gale Cooney, D C, received Logan Alumni Assoc iati on Distin guished Se rvice Awards. Drs. Copp and Cooney practice together in Panama City Beach, Fla. They gradu ated from Log<~n in 1990 and 199 1, res pectively.

D r. Copp is a former Las Vegas entertainer. Known for his inspiringly

ri ch singing vo ice and humorous monologues between songs, he has contri buted his tal ent to the Loga n community by entertaining at numerous Loga n l lo mecoming events during the past I 0 years. Also serving as a voca list at Logan building dedicati ons Jnd other ceremonies, he has helped make these events especially memorable. Dr. Cooney produces Dr. Copp's show s and works with him on audio equipment set-up fo r h is performances.

A 1976 Logan graduate, Dr. Lynch was recognized for his leadership w ith in the chiropracti c pro fession. He has served on th e Ameri can Chiropracti c Association Board of G overnors since 1993 and has been a delegate fro m the State of M aine to the ACA. He has received th e M aine Chiropracti c Associati on "Chiropractor of the Yea r" award and other award s for his leadership <J nd serv ice in legislative relation s and other areas w ithin his state.

Dr. Goodman also recogni zed Logan faculty member Bert Hanicke, DC, for 40 years o f servi ce to Logan College (St'C article below).

Faculty Member Performs Life-Saving Intervention Dr. Kell y Brinkman, Assista0l Professor at Logan and a co-d irector of the college's Health Center in St. Charles, Mo. left¡ her condominium in suburban St. Louis the mo rning of June 27 ancl found a middle-aged man l ying on the sid('Walk nea r her home. Upon exa mining him, Dr. Brinkm.:~n discovered that he was clinica lly dead -she found no pulse or res pi ration.

Or. Brinkman ca lled an ambulcmce and rNurned 1o the man to administer CPR until paramedics arrived about two minutes later. A po lice officN arrived first and assisted Dr. Brinkman.

Their efforts were successful - th e man survived and was breathing on his own by the time the ambulance arrived at th e hospitaI. KMOV-TV of St. Louis filmed a segment o n Dr. Brinkman'!> life-saving intervention, w hich aired on the station's 6 p.m. newscast on June 27. The

segmen t was film ed at the 91 1 communication center that Dr. Brinkman contacted, and showed her meeting the dispatcher who took her ca ll.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch report¡ ed on Dr. Brinkm;m's assistance to the hecJrt attack victim, Rodger A bernathy, th e foll owing day.

Dr. Brinkman and the police officer who assisted her also were honored w ith Missouri State Senate proclamations by Missou ri Senate Minori ty Leader Franc Flotro n. Flotro n called Dr. Brinkman an example of preparedness, noting th at she ca rri es o n her key chain a protective, disposable face shield to administer CPR. She used such a shield in as isting Abernathy. " I never rea ll y expected to have to use CPR to save someone, and it was frightening at first," sa id Dr. Brinkman. "But once I began, I focused on what I was do ing and everything went well."

Logan President Dr. George Goodman presented a plaque to Dr. Brinkman in recognition of her successful CPR intervention.

Dr. Goodman Addresses Students on College's Future; Announces Commendation for Low Student Loan Default Rate Loga n Pres ident Dr. George A. Goodman convened an as~emb ly of Logan studen ts on July t 7 in order to inform students about th e college's ongoing plan fo r growth and fu ture goals. Dr. Goodman had shared similar inform ati o n w ith alumni during the Ho mecom ing awards luncheon on Ju ne 15.

Since 1992, Logan's enrollment has grown by more than 40 percent, helping the college to rea ch its present debt-free status, renovate classrooms and continue its tradition of academic e cellence. Dr. Goodman sa id that with enro llment approaching th e 1 ,000 mdf'k, th e college pl ans to mainlJin enro llment between 950 and 1,075 in the future.

Dr. Goodman also anno unced that he recent ly received a letter from the U.S. Department of Educa ti on, congratulating him on Logan's low, 1.73 percent default rate on student loa ns.

Th e college has mai nta ined a low default rate for mc~ny years and has

increased efforts in recent years to educa te students about th e importan ce of loan repayment. Guest speakers fro m the loan industry and Logan employees and graduates have provided information on methods of finan cia l management conducive to making timely loa n payments, and on eff(:ctive business management of chiropractic practi ces.

During the assembly, Dr. Goodman also presented a plaque to Kell y Brinkman, DC, co-director of Logan's Bogey H il ls Hea lth Center in St. ChJrles, M o. D r. Alumni Association Appoints Gloria Brueggemann Director Th e Logan A lumni Association Board of Directo rs has selected Gloria Brueggemann as alumni d irector. Dr. j on Sunderlage, Association President, announced Brueggemann's appoi ntment.

"W e arc very happy that Gloria has accep ted thi s posi tio n," said Or. Sunderl age. "S he has tremendous knowl edge of our alumni community, having worked at the college fo r 18 years. Her experience in assi sting with the coordinatio n of 1 1 Logan homecomings will be a grea t asset in her new ro le."

Brueggemann succeeds Ivy Filson, Logan Alumni Director since 1993, who resigned her position to devote time to persona l interests and activi -

ties. Her resignation was effective July 16. ''I have very much enjoyed working at Logan,'' said Filson, who bega n her career at the college in 1991 as an employee of the Logan Student Health Center. She added that she looks forward to staying in tou ch with the Logan community and to attending college events with her husband, Dr. Ralph Filson, who is a member of the Loga n faculty and th e Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Alumnus Carries Olympic Torch The O lympic Torch Relay wound its way (rom Califo rni a throughout the United States earl y this summer, raising public awareness or the 1996 O l ympi c Games, hel d in late July/early August in A11anta. Logan alu mnus Dr. Terry Flanagan was among a select group or " torch-bearers'' who carri ed the torch during its journey to Atla nta.

Dr. Flnnagan is a 1982 Logan gradu<~te practicing in Oak Lawn, Ill. He holds D iplon1a te sta tu s with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists and w ith the American College of Chiropracti c Consultants, and is a Fellow or the Ameri can Back Society.

Dr. Flanagan was not told exactl y w hat factors led to his selection by an O lympic Games commillee to be a torch-bearer. However, he has led an (Jnnual chiropractic charitable event for severa l years.

Dr. Flanagan said running with the Olympic torch made him feel as if he were runnin~ ''six inches above the ground. "

Dr. Flan<~gan carried the O lympic. torch on June 3. His route took him across the Congress Street Bridge and south on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

"The distance was slightly less than one kilometer (about half a m ile) and requires about five minutes or running," sa id Or. Flanagan . "At least that's whJt I wJs told. Among the DCs providing care at Atlanta Sports Chiropractic were three Logan graduates, Drs. Raymond Bi ll ingsley1 Charl es Weiss and Larry Ocxner.

Atlanta Sports Chiropractic Clinic was estab lished through a joint effort

by I 0 o rganizations that have been invo lved in sports chiropractic. The founding organization was the Georgia Chiropractic Association Sports Council. The c linic, which was recognized by th e Atlanta Committee for lhe Olympics, was located off-site near the Olympic Village. Although the U.S. Olympic Committee has included chiropractic among its official health care providers1 only one chiropractic physi-

cian, Or. Steve Horowi l7., was assigned to the 1996 O lympic Village medical unit.

Logan graduate Dr. Tom Hyde, a pas t president or Ameri ca n Chiropractic Associa tio n Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, served on the chiropracti c committee that orga nized Atlanta Sports Chiropractic. Dr. H yde is a 1977 Loga n graduate practicing in North M iami.

He also hosts Logan Hea lth Center interns on preceptorships.

Dr. Billingsley, a 1986 Logan graduate practicing in St. Louis and East St. Louis, was among more than 30 DCs from across the United States who look time away from their practi ces to provide care at Atlanta Sports Chiropractic. Or. Ocxner, a 1982 graduate p racticing in New H artfo rd,

N.Y., also was amo ng th ese doctors.

The docto rs successfu lly completed an applica tion process in the rr:~ ll of 1995 in order to work at the c linic.

D r. Weiss, a 1992 Logan graduate, was among Atlanta-area doctors providing local suppo rt and assistance at Atlanta Sports Chiropracti c. '' I went to the clinic on Thursdays and Su ndays," says Dr. Weiss. "The clinic was a big success, and it was exciti ng to be a par t o f chiropractic's ou treach to O lympic athletes."

M any of the athletes who visited A tlanta Sports Chiropractic already were fam iliar with chiropracti c care, says Dr. Billingsley, w ho worked at the clini c from July 22-28. "Some athletes had been tre<!ted by Eu ropean OCs," he says. " Interestingly, they commented on our gentleness and speed in comparison. (continued on page 17)

"Some athletes who carne to our c linic were concern ed about spinal fl exibil i ty. Dr. Billingsley says th at the doctors at th e clinic saw a good cross-section of athl etes, although chiropracti c care seemed to be espec iall y popu lar among competitors in track and field and badm inton.

Logan Coll ege has received a "Beacon" Award from the Salvation Arm y H arbor Light Center in St. Louis. The award, presented at a H arbor Light Center banquet in St. Louis on M ay 23, recognized Logan for its servi ces as a hea lth-ca re provider at the Harbor Light Center.

Logan's award was presented by Lt. Col. Gordon Spicer of the Sa Iva t ion Army, following an introduction by Envoy Bil l Miller, Harbor Light Center adm inistrato r. Envoy Miller pra ised the serv ices provided by Dr. Kinsella and Logan interns, and noted how much he values Dr. Kinsella's fri endship.

vices at its Harbor Li ght H ealth Center five days a week since 1988.

The college provides heal th care for men utilizing Harbor Light Center services nnd for other low-income people. llarbor light Center houses a detox ification unit, alcohol and drug treatment programs, a shelter fo r homeless men and a transitional program for men who have been incarcera ted.

Logan's services at H arbor Light Center inc lude genera l physica l exam inations, diagnostic imaging and other diagnosti c testing, chiropracti c adj ustments, physiological therapeuti cs and (if needed) referrals to medica l or o th er providers. In 1993 , Logan began offerin g th ese services on a part-time basis at the Sa lvation Army Rehabilitation Center. In 1996, th e college extended its servi ces 10 the Sa l va tion Army Fam ily Haven for abused fami lies. The latter two facilities also are loca ted in St. Loui s.

Logan College's long tra di tion of providing free health-ca re services to no n-pro fit o rga ni za tions has been especiall y stro ng thi s summer, w ith numerous Loga n representatives provi ding serv ices.

About 50 Logan interns and faculty members gave physica l examinations to mo re than 500 young peopl e during fo ur examinatio n dates. The physicals are required fo r parti cipaLi on in the N ati o nal Youth Sports Program (NYSP), a federally funded phys ical acti vity p rogram primaril y serv ing inner-city youths ranging in age fro m 10 l o 16. Summer and winter ac tivi ti es arc offered. Loga n interns and faculty members have provided physical exams prio r to several NYSP acLivity seasons since the earl y 1980s.

The college also has an acti ve program of providing sports therapy (primarily muscle work) to parti cipants in St. Louis-area athletic fund-raisers fo r a variety of charities. A t least o ne Logan faculty member attends each event to !1-upervisc the intern s.

On ju ne I , eight H ealth Center intern s, observed by several lowertrim ester students, became Logan's first providers of sports therapy services for the St. Lo uis Rowing Club, w hi ch held a regatta at Creve Coeur Lake in West St. Lo uis County. Logan also participated in the regatta, w ith th e Logan Crew Club row ing in five events (see story o n page 19).

Gross said adult batters parti cipa ting in the even t attempted to hit balls pitched by a machine at 50 m iles per hour. '' N o o ne from Loga n hit a ba ll o ut of th e stadium," said Gross. "The fence seems much further away w hen you 're stand ing at home plate th an it docs from the stands, but we all had a lot of fu n. It was a great feeling to hit balls in Busch Stadi um."

Logan Student Dies in Car Accident Logan Co ll ege stud ents, facu lty and staff members were shocked and saddened to learn of the dea th of Trim ester 8 student Tracey Parmentar.

The 24-year-old woman's life was cut short at 9:30p.m. Jul y 17, when a car she was driving in Sou th St. Lou is County was struck head-on by a pickup truck that swerved into the wrong side of the roadway.

Expressi ng grief felt by many Logan students, Parmentar's c lassmate and Student Docto rs Counci I President Patrick Bronder w rote in the SOC newsletter, the Blue Sheet, " l shared eight trimes ters w ith Tracey and never heard a bitter word cross her lips."

I ogan classma tes and friends of Parmentar's were in attendance at her june 22 funeral, the Logan admi nistration having cancelled c lasses that mo rning to allow students to attend.

Injured in the acciclcnt were three passengers in Parmentar's car - her two teen-age stepsisters and their friend. A ll three g irls were reported in good or stable condition by St. Louisarea hospitals after the accident. In addition to her stepsisters, Parmen tar is survived by her paren ts and stepparents, M arti and Joe Roth and Robert and Chrys Parmentar.

Logan Offers Condolences to Kentuckiana Children's Center Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman announced to the college's students and employees that Or. loan Partridge passed away on July 17. Dr. Partridge was director of hea lth services at the Kentuckiana Children's Center in Louisville until her retirement earli er this year. She was wellknown within the chiropractic profession for her work at th e center, which she j o ined as a staff physician in 1962.

Th e Kcntuckiana Children's Center was es tJ bl ished in 1957 as a privflte, non-profit organ ization providing c;are to multi-handicapped, special needs children . Services are provided regardless of whether parents or guardir1ns can pay for their child's

care. Or. Lorra ine M. Golden, who fou ncied the center, continues to serve as its chief adrninislr<~Lor. Services provided by the multi-discipli nary cen ter include c.hiropracti c care, nutritional therapy, cou nseling, mcdic<JI services when needed, optometri c and dental care and visual and learning therapi es. Graduate students from Louisvi lle universities provide speech therary, social work services and psychological testing. Children who require a specia l educa tion setling attend a school located at the center.

Dr. William Harris, President of the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education (FACE) <1ncl of Alpharetta, Ca.-based Practice Consultants, visited th e Logan campus on July 16 and spen t the day with students in Trimesters 7 and 8.

Alpharetta, Ca.-based FACE has donated $135,000 to Logan College since 1993, as a resu lt of Log<~n's success in rC'aching the goals of two fund-raisi ng challenge campaigns iniatcd by Dr. l larris. FACE has donated almost $3 million to chiropractic educa tion nnd research.

Dr. Harri s, a Pcllmer College of Chiropractic graduate, shared with students wisdom and motivational techniques that he has acquired in the 58 yea rs ince he received his chiropractic degree, including steps toward overcoming fear when entering practice. He emphasized that a commitment to service leads to success, saying, "Success depends more on your attitude than on your circumslances."

After his morning lecture, Dr. Harris spent the afternoon in one-onone meetings w ith students, <tnswering individual questions .

Being a Good ''Servant'' in Chiropractic

Esteb also is the author of the five-book series, A Patient's Point of View, and What Every Chiropractic Assistant Should Know. He delivered the following address as guest speaker at the August 7996 Logan graduating class' awards ceremony, heir! August 2 on the college campus.

Good morning. Thank you for the privilege and honor of sharing a few words on the occasion of your new beginning as doctors of chiropractic. I want to offer a few suggestions t hat might make your journey ahead more fulfilling and fruitful.

When I was a child, I was often asked to assist my dad in projects around the house. He had a workshop in the basement, and when he needed help cutting. gluing or nailing, he would often call on my brotl1er or me to provide a second pair of hands to hold, guide, measure or illuminate something.

I discovered that my inability to read my dad's mind wa s a scrioLJS obstacle.

Because I didn't know the objectives, difficulties or purpose of what my dad was trying to do, invariably I held the board at the wrong angle or pointed the flashlight to the wrong place. My father may have thought I was hard of hearing, because my inability to anticipate his needs was often pointed out at a volume severa l decibels above our normal conversation al level.

Although your future patients w ill rarely raise their voices when speaking to you, in the years ahead they will express their displeasure with the assistance they receive from you in many obvious and subtle ways.

As you prepa re r¡o exchange th e va iL1able skills you've learned here on a win/win basis with yoLJr patients I hope you' ll remember th at you are seeking to establi sh a professional career by entering into a series of classic servant/master relationships. The patient will be the master and you will be the servant. Ignore this fundamental truth - or employ procedures or policies that attempt to reverse these roles - and you will find practice to be an uphill batt le. " But patients don't deserve to be the master," you argue. "They are weak, in pain and lacking the understanding and wisdom of true health. I w ill lead them to health. I will remove the interferences to their inborn hea ling abi lity. They w ill look up to me. I will be the hero! " No, you will be the servant.

We arc told thai the highest calling to which any of us can aspire is to serve others. So take comfort in the fact that your calling to serve the world through chiropractic places you in the very best company. It is in service to others that our spirit is illuminated. It is in service to others that we find purpose. It is only when we lose o urselves in service to others that we find true abundance and joy in li fe.

Does that mean you'll need to val -

unteer to wash each pa ti ent's ca r?

Probably not.

But what docs make a good servant?

If you take your role as a servant seriously, you might consider a review of the Bible. It contains countless guidelines on th e conduct and behavior of servants.

One of my favori te parables in the New Testament is the story about the talents. In biblical times, talents were a form of wealth or currency. If you remember, a property owner left his properly in th e charge of three of his servants while he was away, giving each servant talents for safekeeping.

Upon his return, the master discovered that one servant had invested his talents, producing three additional talents. The second servant had invested even more profitably, producing 10 additional talents. The remaining servant had buried his talents and retrieved the same number with which he had been entrusted.

The Bible tells us that the servant who had done nothing to grow the value of the talents he had been given received a stern le turc. Worse, he had to surrender his talents to the servants who had been better stewards. Apparen tl y, servants arc expected lo nurture, enlarge and improve wha tever is in their custody.

THE TOWER/ SEPTEMBER 1996 So, what does this mean in a chiropractic setting? Perhaps it mea ns that doctors are to demo nstrate ways the palient can save money, get well faster and avoid a relapse in the future.

M aybe it means doctors must give patients more th an t¡hey paid for.

M aking patients more valuable by improving their sense of self-worth would be a significant accomplishment. Yet few doctors risk venturing into the emotio nal and spiritual domains required to produce this type of respo nse in their pati ents. Instead, many doctors prefer the shallow end of th e pool, limiting their patient relationships to merely the physical and biomechanical - effectively burying their talent in the process. Patients leave th e offi ce w i th exactly what they brought except that their physica l complai nts have been alleviated. But the very best servants add value.

What makes a good servant? The iltti tude in w hich service is rendered helps define the servant.

Tired of seemingly unappreciative patients, service providers in virtually

every hea lth care discipline reveal their apparent disdain for their masters in subtle ways . Countless doctors and staff members they employ act as if their jobs would be wonderfu l - if not for the patients! ''This would be a great business, jf it weren't for those bl ankety-b lank patients!" When your pati ents become the problem, you've lost t he servant attitude.

How many tim es have you been o n the receiving end of a wa iLress' fi rst night o n the job, or tri ed to understand the robotica lly slurred speech of two j uni or high school student s sell ing something to raise money for a school project? By conventional standards, their efforts t o provide service are patheti c. But their positive attitudes, their ambition and their enthusiasm overcome their ineptitude or lack of experi ence.

Whal makes a good servant? Good servants anticipate th eir masters' needs and exceed the expectations placed upon them.

Good servants are rare. So many are

looking for a shortcut. So many are looking for the ''minimum daily requirement" needed to get by. So many are merely hoping to be able to pay their bills and return th e money they've borrowed. Yet it is in anticipating the needs of the master that the art of service is ful ly revealed. And thi s is where serva nthood can turn inlo leadership.

One of the wise w riters or the Bible's book of Proverbs observes th at "witho ut vision the people peri sh ." Yet vision requires light. You are po ised to begin practicing at a time w hen there is more fear and apprehension than at any other moment in the 100-year history of chiropracti c. Th e patients you w ill be serving w il l be suffering from even more fea r and more darkness. Th ey will have even more uncen ainty about health, healing and the pote11tial of their own bodies. Your mission w ill be to point the way, to run ahead, to anticipate. To shine the light, right where it's needed. To lead.

And that's how servants - become masters.
