Dr. Sparlin Elected Chairperson of the Board Dr. Eugene Sparlin of Atlanta has been elected to a three-year term as Chairperson of the Logan Board of Trustees. Dr. Sparlin's election took place during the board's meeting in St. Louis on February 1.

Dr. Sparlin is a 1952 Logan graduate practicing in Atlanta, where he owns the Sparlin Chiropractic Clinic and is a principal of six other chiropractic clinics. Last year Sparlin Chiropractic Clinic, which employs 12 DCs, w as featured during a Georgia Chiropractic Association

Dr. Sparlin is a past president of the Georgia Chiropractic Association and a past member of the Georgia Board of Chiropractic Examiners. He has served on the Logan Board of Trustees since 1995 .

Dr. Sparlin succeeds Dr. Virg ini a S. Brown as Chairperson of the Board. A publishing co nsultant and retired executive editor of M cGraw- Hill Book Company - Webster Division, Dr. Brown retired from the Board of Trustees and was elected to a oneyear term on the board's Adv isory Council.

He served the maximum three consecutive three-year terms from 1984 to 1993; served a yea r on the board's Advisory Counc il, and then re-j o ined th e board in 1994. Dr. Strotheide f irst joined the Board in 1988 and served three consecutive three-year term s.

A 1 981 Logan graduate, Dr. Malon practices in Biddeford, Maine. He is a past president of the Maine Chiropractic Association and is currently the delegate from Maine to the American Chiropractic Association .

He was the 1995 MCA "Chiropractor of the Year" and is a Fellow of the American Back Society.

Dr. Ungerland graduated from Logan in 1976 and practices in Tulsa, Okla. He received an Outstanding Service Award in 1985 from the Chiropractic Association of Oklahoma, which he has served as first vice president. He also is a past chairman of the CAO Insurance Peer Review Committee.

Re-elected to three-year terms on the Board of Trustees were Dr. Arden Fenander of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. and William Davis of St. Louis. Dr. Fenander is a 1959 Logan graduate who first joined the college's Board of Trustees in 1990. Davis, a retired executive of Emerson Electric Company of St. Louis, first joined the Logan Board in 1995 .

Re-elected to a three-year term as Logan Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees was Dr. Richard Davis of St. Louis. Dr. Davis was first elected to this position in 1995, after graduating from Logan (magna cum laude) in 1994. A retired executive with the Monsanto Company of St. Louis, Dr. Davis worked as a marketing consultant prior to enrolling at Logan.

Dr. Larry Steele of Bloomington, Ind. was re-elected to a one-year term as the Logan Alumni Association Representative to the Board of Trustees. A 1964 Logan graduate, Dr. Steele has served in that capacity since 1989.

term on the Advisory Council of the Board of Trustees was Missouri State Senator David Klarich. Senator Klarich practices law with Ri ezman & Blitz, P.C. of St. Louis and formerly served as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives. Named "Distinguished Legislator" for 1995

by the Missouri Hospital Association, Senator Klarich has a strong interest in health care issues.

Logan Trustee Hosts Top Organizer of Olympic Boxing Competition

A snowy, icy winter in St. Louis enabled Logan students from Canada and the northern United States to feel right at home as snow blanketed the campus.

Dr. Eugene Sparlin of Atlanta was one of thousands of volunteers who helped show athletes and organizers of the 1996 Summer Olympics the true meaning of Southern hospitality.

A 1952 Logan graduate, Dr. Sparlin was recently elected chairperson of the Logan Board of Trustees.

Dr. Sparlin joined the host committee for the Olympics and was appointed official host of Anwar Chowdhry of Pakistan. Chowdhry, a former college professor, heads the International Federation of Boxing Worldwide and was in charge of boxing competition at the Olympics.

Dr. Sparlin's duties included accompanying a driver assigned to Chowdhry to his hotel and riding with Chowdhry to the boxing competition site and other Olympic events. One of his "perks" was being photographed with boxer Evander Holyfield, who defeated Mike Tyson a few months later - in November 1996 - to become the World Boxing Association heavyweight champion. The photo of Holyfield with Dr. Sparlin is shown on the cover of this magazine.

"The opening ceremony was especially exciting," says Dr. Sparlin.

"There were 80,000 people in attendance. Boxing played a strong role in the ceremony, with Evander carrying the torch and Muhammed Ali lighting it. " The Olympic competition in boxing is interesting because it attracts athletes from so many countries, many of which do not enter many other events," Dr. Sparlin adds.

"That's because many third-world nations that do not have big stadiums or other major sports facilities are very active in boxing, which doesn't require such facilities."

Radiology Department Continues Acquisition of Advanced Equipment The Logan Radiology Department recently purchased two new Bennett X-ray machines, for use in the college's satellite Health Centers. Radiology Department Chairperson Norman W. Kettner, DC, DACBR said the Bennett High-Frequency Radiographic system used in both machines includes advanced features that reduce the radiation dose received by the patient.

Logan Radiographic Technician john Winscott, who helped coord inate the equipment purchase, said that one of the two new Bennett units has been installed as a replacement unit at Logan's Yorkshire Health Center in Webster Groves. The Yorkshire center also received a new radiographi c table and film cassette. The second Bennett unit was installed in the Logan Radiology Department in the college's on-campus Health Center.

Dr. Kettner said that the purchase of the two new units marks the beginning of a new policy on radiographic equipment acquisition for the co llege.

the Logan Health Centers- including units and film processors -will now be replaced o n a five-year cycle. As each piece of equ ipment is retired from use at the co llege, it will be made availab le to students or graduates of the co llege at a discounted price.

Logan's Bogey Hills Health Center in St. Charles will be the next existing Logan facility to receive new rad iographic equ ipment. Th e Radiology Department's immediate task, however, will be to equip a new Logan Health Center opening in South St. Louis County later this year.

Alumni Compete in Their Second World-Wide lronman Competition Drs. Darrell Day and Stacey Burke met the demands of study at Logan College while undertaking the rigors of training for tri athlon competition.

Before they graduated from Logan in December 1995 and August 1996, respectively - the two men met one of their sport's greatest cha llenges, competing in the 1995 Worldwide Gatorade lronman Competition.

The doctors returned to Kana on the island of Hawaii, where th e World-Wide lronman is held, for the 1996 competition in October. Now practicing chiropractic in Columbu s, Ind. with Logan graduate Dr. Mark Allen, Dr. Day says he was in excellent condition going into th e 1996 lronman . He attributed his condition in part to effective nutritional and visuali zation consultation and chiropractic ca re, provided by D r. joseph

Unger of the Logan faculty.

Unfortunately, Dr. Day experienced stomach upset several times during the race, a common problem among triathletes. The determined ath lete co ntinued th e race, but increased his tim e to complete it by 40 minutes over his 1995 tim e of 9 hours, 35 minutes and 49 seconds.

(His 1995 time ranked him 76th of 1,497 contestants in that event; third among Americans aged 25 to 29; and 20th overa ll among Ameri cans.)

World-Wide lronman parti cipants must complete a 2.4-mile swim, a 11 2mile bicycle ride and a 26.2 -mile run.

Prior to the lronman in 1996, Dr. Day took f irst place in his class and third place overall at the Indi ana World Endurathon, also a world-class competition. He antic ipates rebounding from his setback in Hawaii and is

considering becoming a professional triathlete within the next two years.

Dr. Burke improved his performance in the 1996 lronman, achieving a personal record by comp leting the race in 9 ho urs and 55 minutes. A native of Chatham, Ontario, he recently began practicing ch iropracti c in Toronto.

While he intends to continue competing in triathlons onl y at the amateur level , Dr. Day says that despite the demands of training it would be difficult to give up his sport. Tri athlon co mpetitors typi ca lly swim 16,000 to 25,000 meters per week; bike 200 to 300 miles per week; and run 40 to 60 miles per week.

"Training is an everyday routine to me, like brushing my teeth," says Dr. Burke. "It gives me great persona l satisfaction ."

Alumnus Rebounds From Fire That Destroyed His Practice When 1988 Logan graduate Dr. Jeffrey Murveit of Baltimore left for work on March 23, 1996, he anticipated a typical day of treating patients and managing his office. Instead, upon arriving at the strip mall where he had been in practice for seven years, he found that half of the mallincluding his office - had burned to the ground.

"The fire started at about 4 a.m., possibly in the store next to my office," says Dr. Murveit. "It was all over when I arrived. The firefighters were just standing in the parking lot, talking."

Determined to maintain his practice, Dr. Murveit gathered his staff members as they arrived, telling them, "We have a lot of work ahead of us." Within a week, he and his staff had moved the practice to a temporary facility. Other local DCs helped by contributing used equipment.

A few months later, Dr. Murveit purchased an empty shell of a building, which he renovated. His new office is located only a mile from his previous location, just a few miles outside the Baltimore city line.

Dr. Murveit encourages other doctors to be sure their offices' computer records are backed up for storage in a fireproof location or taken off-site every night. "We had a couple months' worth of back-ups that were not in a fire-proof container," he says .

"We would have had a much easier time if we have not lost them."

Reviewing fire insurance carefully ._ especially as a practice grows - is also important, says Dr. Murveit. "I hired a consultant to help with the process of itemizing everything for the insurance company after the fire," he says. "He helped make the process much easier.

"It's been a challenging situation," adds the upbeat Dr. Murveit. "I certainly wouldn't wish anything like this on anyone, but it's the kind of experience that helps you become a better person."

Jeffrey L. Schaub, DC (1/79) of Washington, Ind., on the death of his father, M. Neill Schaub, DC (2/53), of Burlington, Wis. Dr. Schaub passed away on February 21 . He was a past president of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association. He served as editor of the association's journal, and was active on several WCA committees.

In 1981 Dr. Schaub received the WCA "Teuteberg Award" for recruitment of students to attend chi ropractic colleges.

Dr. Suiter

Logan graduate Dr. Leonard Suiter was recently elected president of the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations (COCSA). A 1977 Logan graduate, Dr. Suiter practices in the west St. Louis County suburb of Ellisville.

Chiropractic state associations throughout the United States are members of COCSA. The association has an annual conference at which issues of importance to the chiropractic profession are discussed. The December 2, 1996 issue of Dynamic Chiropractic reported that more than 40 state associations attended the 1 996 COCSA conference.

Dr. Suiter's election as president took place during the conference. He will hold office for a one-year term .

Dr. Suiter became active with COCSA as a result of holding numerous leadership positions- including the office of president - of the Missouri State Chiropractors Association.

Dynamic Chiropractic also reported that another Logan graduate and past COCSA president, Dr. Rick McMichael of Canton, Ohio, was unanimously elected as an honorary lifetime member of COCSA during its 1996 conference. Dr. McMichael was the third DC to be so honored.

Logan Graduate Inducted Into Sports Chiropractic Hall of Fame Logan alumnus Dr. John Danchik of Belmont, Mass. has received one of the highest honors in the specialty of chiropractic care of athletes: induction as a member of the Sports Chiropractic Hall of Fame. The prestigious Hall of Fame was established in the late 1980s by the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness as a means of recognizing outstanding contributions to the specialty of chiropractic care of amateur and professional athletes.

ACA Sports Council President Dr. Margaret Karg announced Dr. Danchik's selection to the Hall of Fame at the Sports Council's 1996 annual meeting, held in Atlanta last July prior to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. (Dr. Robert Monokian, a 1978 Logan graduate practicing in Marlton, N.L completed his term as president of the ACA Sports Council last summer and now serves the council as past president.)

Dr. Danchik is the seventh doctor to be inducted into the Sports Chiropractic Hall of Fame and the second Logan alumnus to be so honored. (The first was the late Dr. Joseph Santiago, a 1940 Logan graduate.)

In announcing Dr. Danchik's induction into the Hall of Fame, Dr. Karg said that he "has made an enormous contribution to sports chiropractic, both as a spokesperson and as an educator."

A past president of the ACA Sports Council, Dr. Danchik graduated from Logan College in 1977 and has specialized in chiropractic sports injury care throughout his career. A Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, he has been a leader in ensuring a chiropractic presence at Olympic Games, serving since 1985 as the chiropractic profession's representative to the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Selection Committee.

In the latter capacity, Dr. Danchik is responsible for selecting the chiropractic profession's representative to

the USOC medical tent each time Olympic Games are held. Doctors aspiring to work as the USOC's official chiropractic provider go through a rigorous selection process- administered by Dr. Danchik- that includes providing chiropractic care at the U.S . Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

Dr. Danchik is an active lecturer in t.he Logan Postgraduate Department Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician program. He previously served on the college's Board of Trustees.

In addition, Dr. Danchik has served since 1993 as the chiropractic representative to the National Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science, an interdisciplinary organization made up of health care providers specializing in the care of athletes. The commission holds an annual symposium attended by representatives of medical and other health care fields.

The author of numerous publications, Dr. Danchik has served as associate editor of the journal of the Neuromusculoskeletal System (JNMS) and as an expert analyst in sports injury care for DC Tracts . Both publications are refereed (peer-reviewed) professional journals.

Commenting on his selection to the Sports Chiropractic Hall of Fame, Dr. Danchik emphasizes his pride in being one of many Logan graduates to provide leadership in the field of chiropractic sports injury care. "So many people who have been instrumental in sports chiropractic studied at Logan*/' he says . "Since our roots as practitioners go back to Logan, the college has had great influence within the sports chiropractic movement."

Dr. Danchik notes that Logan has emphasized sports injury care as an academic topic and has helped reinforce the importance of physical fitness among students and employees of the college . "In addition to having a widely recognized postgraduate program in sports injury care/' says

Dr. Danchik Dr. Danchik, "the college has worked to encourage fitness among its students by sponsoring athletic events such as Field Day (held twice a year) and by establishing the Work-Out Center on campus ."

Prior to enrolling at Logan College, Dr. Danchik was a right-handed relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He is a regionally ranked racquetball player in New England and a New England Amateur Competitive Golfer, with three holes-in-one to his credit. In addition, he has run six marathons.

Dr. Danchik also has been active in efforts to establish recreational facilities for underprivileged boys in the Boston area .

Homeless St. louisans Receive Holiday Gifts From Logan Each year since 1990, 300 or more homeless St. Louisans have found the holiday season a little warmer, thanks to gift packages of warm, new clothing from Logan College. This year was no exception. After raising $3,000 in November to fund the gift packages, organizers at Logan College began procuring the gift items.

Fund-raising events for this year's holiday gifts included Logan's annual "Give the Homeless a Lift" benchpress fund-raiser and a bake sale held in conj unction with the bench-press event. The college's sponsorship of an on-campus book sale by Reading's Fun Book Fair also helped fund the gift effort, with 10 percent of the sale's proceeds donated to the ho i iday gift program.

Also supporting the program were the St. Louis Rams football team, which donated a football autographed by players for a raffl e, and a St. Louis County Sam's Club store, which donated a total of $125 in cash and merchandise.

In conjunction with the benchpress event, a food and used clothing drive was sponsored by the Logan chapter of Chi Rho Sigma, national professional chirop ractic fraternity.

SDC Officers Elected Prior to adjourning for th e winter holidays in December, Logan students voted for Student Doctors Counc i I officers for the Winter and Spring/Summer trimesters of 1 99 7.

The new SDC president is Owen Bartruff, Trimester 6. The other three SDC officers served previously in their positions and were re-elected. They are: A I Pinto, Trimester 8 - vice president; Terri Leap, Trimester 5 treasurer; and Li z Whool ey, Trimester 7 - secretary.

The annual " Give the Homeless a Lift" bench press event helped raise funds for the holiday gift program. The Logan chapter of Pi Kappa Chi, national professional chiropractic fraternity, helped organize the event.

All items donated to the drive were distributed to St. Louis-area agencies serving homeless people.

Organizers of the hol iday gift program assembled 360 gift packages this year, with 235 gifts distributed on Christmas Day to men at Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in St. Louis and to women at United Methodist Ministry Shalom House, also in St. Louis. Helping to distribute the gifts were Dr. Maxine Morris, Admissions Coord inator at Logan; Rosi Fenster, Health Center secretary, with her husband, Aaron Fenster, her daughter Cynthia Schmaltz and her grandchildren, Heather and Ciera Collins; Logan students Jason Goodman and Gene Raby; Raby's wife, Kay Raby; her son, Cliff Atwell , also a Logan student; and Lynne Suroviak, Atwell's fiancee.

Logan President Dr. George Goodman and his wife, Linda, also participated in the Christmas morning gift distribution at the Harbor Light Center.

A few days earli er on December 21, 125 homeless U.S. military veterans received gift packages at a holi-

day dinner in St. Louis. The dinner was sponsored by the St. Louis County Office of Veterans Affairs.

Logan student Cheryl Nelson distributed the gifts o n behalf of the co llege.

The homeless men and women accustomed to rece iving donated used c lothing - were espec ially pleased to find new clothing items in their packages, said organizer Dr. A llen Parry, Dean of Postgraduate Education at Logan.

M en's gift packages included flan nel sh irts, sweatshirts and socks.

Wom en's gift packages inc luded hand-decorated sweatshirts, turtleneck sh irts, underwear, gloves, socks and make-up.

The 1996 ho liday gift program was organized by a Logan comm ittee led

KDNL-TV/Channel 30, St. Louis' ABC affiliate, filmed the homeless veterans' dinner on December 21 and reported on the event and on Logan 's gift presentation during the station's 5 p.m . newscast that evening.

Research/Ergonomics Center Evaluates Instrument Developed to Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome An instrument developed for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome is the subject of a product evaluation study underway in the Logan Research and Ergonomics Center. The study is being conducted by Fawn Dunphy, DC, Research Associate, Donna Mannella, DC, Associate Professor of Clinica l Sciences, and Gary Sanders, PhD, Director of Research and Ergonomics.

Th e instrument being stud ied is the CTD M ark II, manufactured by Cincinnati -based Therasys . The CTD Mark II uti I izes passive pneumatic traction to provide long-axis distraction (rotation and stretching) of the wrist and forearm.

The long-action distraction process may stimulate myofasc ial release (release of tension) of the flexor and extensor muscles of the forearm.

Myofascial release aids in the redu ction of inflammation and decompressio n, or pressure on the median nerve - causes of the symptoms of pain and weakn ess, numbness and tingling of the wrist and hand experi enced by individuals w ith carpal tunnel syn drome.

"This instrument is one of the first developed to provide co nservative treatment of carpal tunn el syndrome," says Dr. Sanders. "The manufacturer is seeking a 'pre-market agreement' from the U .S. Food and Drug Adm inistration, and must provide documentation of the instrument's safety and effectiveness in order to obtain a positive response to the pre-market agreement app lication."

The study will have at least a ninemonth time frame. Each subject is treated with the CTD Mark II three times per week for four w eeks, with a re-evaluation/follow-up visit after four w eeks with no treatment. The p lanned time period for the proj ect is lengthy, says Dr. Sanders, beca use of the great degree of difficu lty in findin g subjects who meet strict criteri a for carpal tunnel syndrome, an often-misdi agnosed conditi on.

"Many people have symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome without actually having the disorder," says Dr. Dunphy. "Symptoms similar to those of carpal tunnel syndrome may be caused by nerve root impingement, brachial plexus impingement or ch ronic muscular strain leading to inflammation of, or edema (water retention) around the nerve."

Prospective subjects who do not qualify for the carpal tunnel study may, if they choose, participate in a related clinical study on chiropractic care of individ uals with carpal tunnel- like symptoms of another etiology (cause). Brachial plexus impingem ent refers to co mpression of th e network of nerves that origin ates in the cervical and thoracic spine and travels to the axi ll a (armpit), dividing there and innervating (supplying) the arm and shoulder.

Dr. Dunphy screens all prospective subjects for th e study of the CTD M ark II, with each individual receiving a compl ete upper-quadrant examin ation, X-ray of the wrist to ru le out pathology, and electrodiagnostic testing of nerve conduction.

N erve co nductio n tests are uti I ized to assess th e motor and sensory integrity (function) of th e median nerve in each prospective subj ect.

Test results indicate the function of the nerve and the true eti o logy (cause) of the pati ent's symptoms.

Somato-sensory-evoked potentia l testing is used to eva I uate the i ntegrity of t he median nerve from the wrist to the cortex of the brain in each prospective subject. Dr. Dunphy explains th at SSEP test results indicate whether there is a more proximal eti o logy of the symptoms - a cause that is c loser to th e sp in e, such as a

CTD Mark II. Instead, subjects receive ch iropractic adjustments, soft tissue manipulation, post-isometric (manua lly assisted) relaxation exercise, and instruction in preventive exercises to be performed at hom e or at work.

Dr. Sanders w i II compile resu Its of the CTD Mark II evaluation after treatment and fo ll ow-up evalu ati ons of 96 subjects have been compl eted . As is always t ru e of product eva lu ation studies co nducted by the Research and Ergo no mi cs Center, th e CTD Mark II manufacturer has no guarantee that the study wi ll document effectiveness of the instrument.

The Research and Ergonomics Center designs studies and clini ca l trials based on the claims each man ufacturer wishes to make about its product.

However, as Dr. Sanders told St. Lou is' Medica l Business journal recentl y, "There are no guarantees in research . . . We are not able to substantiate claims for every single product."

St. Louis' Medical Business Journal Covers Work of Logan Research and Ergonomics Center Fulton, Mo. seamstress Nancy Ellis is the inventor of a back brace called the "Back Sling." Ellis and her invention were featured in the November 1996 issue of the Medica l Business journal, a trade newspaper for St. Louis-area physicians.

Quoted extensively in the article about Ellis' invention and in a sidebar article is Gary Sanders, PhD, Director of Research and Ergonomi cs at Logan Coll ege. Also quoted in the sidebar is Donna Mannella, DC, Associate Professor of Chiropractic and Clinical Sciences and a research associate at th e college.

Earli er this year, Elli s received a U.S. patent on her inve ntion and dec ided to take the device to Logan College, where she met with Dr. Sanders. Dr. Sanders told the Medical Business jo urnal th at despite the crowded market for bac k support products, he felt Ellis' invention had potential because its design allows it

to continue providing support even "when you sit on the edge of your chair," - while most such supports are effective only if users sit back against their chairs.

Ellis lacked the funds to initiate a clinical trial on her invention, but Dr. Sanders introduced her, over the phone, to executives of International Waterpillow ofToronto. The company makes the M ediflow Waterpillow, on which the Research and Ergonomics Center has conducted studies. Ellis subsequently signed a licensing agreement with the company.

The sidebar article, "Searching for Evidence," focused primarily o n th e Loga n Research and Ergonomi cs Center. Staff writer Peter Downs of the Medical Business journal began the sidebar by noti ng that " of the thousands of devices on the market that cl aim to prevent o r relieve aches and pains, few are backed by independent research." Th e arti c le goes on to

describe the work of the Logan Research and Ergonomics Center.

Explaining that makers of chiropractic produ cts and devices are "just beginning to see the value of ... substantiating their claims," Dr. Sanders said the Research and Ergonomics Center designs studies and clinical trials based on the claims each manufacturer wishes to make about its product. If studies do not substantiate all des ired c laims, the center advises the manufacturer on what it can saylegitimately.

Logan Research and Ergonomics Center product studies funded by manufacturers have becom e th e center's nich e gradua ll y sin ce 1992, when the co llege's research and ergonomi cs departments merged under Dr. Sanders' leadership. At times up to three studi es are underway conc urrently within the departm ent (see related article on page 11 ).

Students in the 12 1st graduating class of Logan College of Chiropractic became doctors of chirop racti c on December 14, at the conc lu sion of their graduation ceremony at W estpo rt Playhou se in W est St. Lo ui s County. As always, several hundred proud family members and friends w ere in attendance at the commencement, with Logan facu lty and staff members also o n hand to wish the 93 graduates success.

The graduatio n address w as given by noted chiropracti c leader Dr. Fred H. Barge. Dr. Barge is a 1954 grad uate of Palmer College of Chiropracti c and a past president of the Internationa l Chirop ractors Assoc iati o n.

Dr. Barge reminded the graduates

of the positive sh ift in public perception of chiropractic in the United States during the p ast 10 yea rs, adding, " I see prosperous times- but also very responsible times - ahead for our profess io n." A second-generation chiropractic practition er, Dr. Barge noted th at hi s fath er's generation during th e 1920s "fought just to stay out of j ail for ' practicin g med icine witho ut a license."'

In add iti on to se rving as commencement speaker for the December 1996 graduation, Dr. Barge visited the Logan ca mpu s to lecture on November 25 . He spoke to students in Trim esters 1, 5 and 9 on achieving success in chiropractic pract ice.

Logan Basketball Club Plays Regional College Teams

During the 1970s, Logan College became we ll -known among many St. Lo ui sans as a result of its basketball team, whi ch earn ed a good reputation p layin g teams fro m oth er schools throu gho ut th e St. Lou is region .

A lthough not yet as well-known in the co mmunity, a new basketball tradi tion has begun at Logan College.

Several of th e players were members of Logan's silver-medal team at th e 1996 Ch iropractic Games, held in September at Parker College of Ch iropractic in Dall as. O rgan ized by Logan student Shawn Kapper, th e players coach th emselves.

Games thi s season have included face-offs aga inst Westminster Co llege in Fulton, Missouri; Concordi a Sem inary in St. Louis; and Sanford-Brown Coll ege, also of St. Louis. The c lu b had a 3- 7 win -loss record in late January, with four more regular-season games schedu led. Th e team also was preparing to play in a basketba ll tournament at National Co llege of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill. in March.

A ll of the Logan team members p layed varsity basketba ll in hi gh school, with some players also having co ll egiate experience. In add itio n to Kapper, the players are John Bradbury, Jeff Kempe, Rick Lenholt, Sea n M o ran, Chri s Murry, Kev in Tackett and Dave Vascura.

Data Processing Professionals Join Logan College John F. Presley has joined Logan Coll ege as Director of Information Systems, and Trent Hamm has joined the co llege as a systems specialist in the Information Systems Department.

Presley brings more than 20 yea rs of experience as a com puter engineer in the U.S . Air Force to Logan. He received Bachelor of Science degrees in comp uter science an d engineering techno logy, respectively, from the University of Maryland and the Air Force Institute of Technology.

IN THE NEWS Brian Snyder, DC, Assistant Professor of Ch iropractic Science at Logan College, presented a study at the 1996 annual symposium of the International Thermographic Society, held November 14-16 on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The symposi um was attended by chiropractic physicians, medical neurologists, podiatrists and physical therapists.

The title of Dr. Snyder's lecture was "Clinical Results of Thermography Study Using Toftness Technique at Logan College of Chiropractic." The study he presented utilized the Toftness method of chi ropractic adjusting on subjects with a variety of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

The study was funded by a $20,425 grant from the Foundation for Advancem ent of Chiropractic Research. Logan College's ongoing research on the Toftness method has been funded by FACR grants totaling nearly $300,000.

Thermography measures and displays variations in skin surface temperature. It can monitor characteristic heat patterns present in many physi ca l disorders and indicate physiologi ca l responses such as nerve irritation, trigger points and changes in vascu lar flow.

In addition, Dr. Snyder has been elected to the Intern ational Thermographic Society Board of D irectors.

The soc iety's board is made up of representatives of various health professions.

William Ramsey, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Logan, announced the promotion of Scott Hainz, DC, from instructor to assistant professor at Logan. Dr. Hainz is a co-director of Logan's Bogey Hills Health Center in St. Charles. A 1986 Logan graduate, Dr. Hainz has been a member of Logan Co llege's clin ica l supervisory faculty since 1992.

Logan faculty member Paul Ellis, MS (R), PhD (C), Assistant Professor of Basic Science and Research, is the author of three sections of a new textbook. Gary Greenstein, DC edited and Mosby-Year Book, Inc. published the text, Clinical Assessment of Neu-

romusculoskeletal Disorders.

Ellis wrote "Functional Anatomy of the Head and Neck" and "Muscu lature/' both sections of the book's third chapter, w hich focuses on the head and neck. He also wrote a section of the book's fourth chapter, which addesses the spine. Ellis's section of Chapter 4 is titled "Functi o nal Anatomy of th e Cervi ca l Spine."

Gary Johnson, DC, Health Centers Administrative Assistant, was one of 19 chiropracti c co llege representatives participating in a Council on Chiropractic Education Commission on Accreditation training workshop for prospective accreditation site vis it team chairpersons. Speaking at the

workshop, held in Phoenix on January 15, was William Ramsey, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Logan .

As part of the CCE accred itation and re-accreditation process, site teams representing the Commission on Accreditation visit chiropractic colleges to assess their compliance with the CCE's Standards for Ch iropractic Programs and Institutions.

The CCE is recognized as an accred iting agency by the U.S. Department of Education .

Rudi Publishing of San Francisco has published the second ed ition of

Starting a

Chiropractic

Practice.

Authors of the book are Rudolf Vrugtman, MBA, Instructor of Chiropractic Science at Logan, and Gayle A . Jensen, RN. The book addresses business aspects of opening a ch iropractic practice and c lini cal and other administration issues such as equ ipment acquisition, insurance, b illings, office management, tax co nsiderations and community networking. The text is required for practice management course work at Logan Co llege and is required or recommended at several other chiropractic co ll eges.

The book also is utili zed by practicing doctors.

In preparing the new edition of the book, Vrugtman and Jensen updated its contents and expanded its coverage of managed care.

Alumni Association Holds "Alumni Day" Th e Logan A lumni Assoc iatio n held its annual "Alumni Day" on Saturday January 25 on the Logan campus. Open to every Logan student at a nom inal cost, each year's Alumni

Day is planned by the association as a learning experience for students in the area of practice management.

This year's program was attended by more than 40 students. Speaking

Carri ck, DC, PhD, DACAN, DABCN, DACNB, FACCN, an instructor in the Logan Postgraduate Department's Diplomate - Chiropractic Neurology program, presented original research at the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) 1996 International Conference o n Spinal M anipulation.

The conference took place October 17-19 in Bournemouth, England.

Dr. Carri ck's study was titled "Th e Effects of Cervi ca l Manipulation on Brain Function ." It was one of a limited number of papers selected for live presentation at the ICSM. The study measured brain activity and validated an instrument in a large population study after manipulation of the . cerv ica l spine. The results showed improvement in brain functi o ns after manipulation of the cervica l sp ine on th e side of greater co rtica l hemispheri c ity (domi nance), and decreases in brain function following ce rvi ca l adjustment on the side of decreased cortica l hem isp heri c ity (non -dam i nance) .

Dr. Carri ck revi ewed the literature

of brain perception and cortica l mapping utilizing visual evoked experi ences. He presented f indings of a multi-blinded controlled study of 500 individuals, including 12 null hypotheses that validated his findings with strong statistical significance.

Dr. Carric k's research on brain fun cti on and chiropracti c manipulation is the fi rst to be reported in thi s area of neurophysiology. The study validates the specificity of ch irop ractic procedures and identifies ca nalized neurologica l pathways that are activated by manipulation of the cervi ca l spine.

Theme: The Logan Difference Is You! The Logan Alumni Association Board of Directors has worked diligently to be receptive to alumni survey responses and other input while planning this year' s Homecoming program. The result is an exciting schedule of events designed to fulfill a wide range of educational needs and socializing preferences .

Late afternoon/evening events will include a Campus Open House Thursday, June 12 after seminars conclude for the day. This program is designed to enable everyone to see the changes that have taken place on campus in recent years.

Visit the beautifully renovated conference room now used by the Logan administration and Board of Trustees, and the new "smart" classroom. No, it's not a classroom just for those who made the Dean's List-- it's a high-tech classroom designed to make both learning and teaching easier. A pilot project implemented at Logan in recent months, the smart classroom is popular with Logan students and faculty members alike.

Program Highlights Thursday, June 12 The first morning of our three-day Homecoming and Class Reunion program will find many of us teeing off at the Annual Student/Doctor Golf Tournament at St. Andrews Golf Course. Non-golfers can enjoy a four-hour continuing education seminar on the Logan campus, featuring nationally known lecturer Dr. Louis Sportelli.

Saturday, June 14 Saturday's seminar topics include natural alternatives to over-the-counter and prescription drugs--presented

by Dr. Herb Joiner-Bey--and integrated extremity management by Dr. John Downes. Three day's attendance at Homecoming seminars will provide 22 continuing education credit hours (subject to individual state board approval.)

In addition, Logan's Postgraduate Department is offering six hours of Emergency Procedures and CPR for Paraprofessionals and Spouses.

Join in the spirit of competition with Logan alumni and students at the annual Student/Alumni Golf Tournament. This year's tournament will be held atthe beautiful St. Andrews Golf Course located in St. Charles, Missouri.

Your entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, cart, continental breakfast, and a light lunch. Prior to taking a shot, each golfer who has properly registered to play may register with the Million Dollar Hole-In-One official at the designated hole for a $5 fee. Any golfer whose tee shot remains on the putting surface of the green will instantly receive a 3-ball sleeve of ULTRA 500 DISTANCEGOLFBALLS.
