Logan College Holds 122nd Commencement; Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan Addresses Graduates Honoring 82 new doctors of chiropractic, Logan College held its 122 nd commencement on April 19 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in St. Lou is.

The large auditorium at the facility was filled with happy family members and friends of the gradu ates.

New graduate Dr. Liana Goetz is the sister of Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan's daughter-in-law, Debra Carnahan, wife of the governor's son, Jay Russell Carnah an. Governor Carnahan attended the ceremony as a guest of Dr. Goetz and gave the graduation address.

During h is address, Governor Carnahan made references to Logan 's distinguished 62-year history. He also noted that as a society, the United States has been grappling with issues surrounding access to hea lth care sin ce the Truman admin istration 50 years ago.

The governor believes that a "one size fits all" approach to health care will not be viable in the future and that health care of the future will be commu nity-based, with services targeted to expressed community needs.

Giving the Logan alumni address during the commencement was Dr. Jon Sunderlage, President of the

Logan College Alumni Association.

Dr. Sunderlage is the primary instructor of the Logan Postgraduate Department's acupuncture certifi cation programs. He practices in Elgin,

Ill. During his address, Dr. Sunderlage discussed reports indicating that 40 percent of Americans have utilized some form of alternative health care.

With interest in preventive health care growing, Dr. Sunderlage envisions a strong future for chiropracti c.

He shared with the graduates his strategies for success in practice and the aspects of day-to-day patient care that he finds especially reward ing.

Logan College Hosts ACC Meeting; Dr. Goodman Elected ACC President Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman has been elected to a oneyear term as president of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC). Dr. Goodman's election took place during the ACC's annual meeting, held in San Diego March 13-15 .

Approximately 300 chiropractic educators and college administrators attended the conference.

Dr. Goodman previously served as the ACC's vice president. The organization is made up of the 16 accredited chiropractic colleges in the United States and The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College.

"I am honored to have been elected to lead the ACC," said Dr. Goodman. "I believe very strongly that the future of chiropractic education wi II be greatly strengthened by all chiropractic colleges working together to enhance our programs and overcome obstacles that we face ."

Logan College, under Dr. Goodman's direction, was responsible for organizing the ACC's annual meetings in 1996 and 1997. Ann Carter, Executive Secretary to Dr. Goodman, managed the logistics of this year's conference and last year's.

In addition to the 17 member colleges, this year's ACC meeting also was attended by representatives of Anglo-European Chiropractic College of Bournemouth, England and of the University of Odense in Denmark.

Presidents of ACC colleges meet several times each year to identify common problems and issues in chiropractic education and discuss possible solutions. In 1994, the presidents initiated an annual meeting including representatives of all academic, clinical and administrative departments of each college. (Prior to 1994, some specialized groups of the ACC met separately.)

During the past year, the ACC has published two position papers, generated by consensus and signed by all

Chiropractic Science, giving a poster presentation . The presentation was titled "Student Confidence in Business Acumen: Is There a Need to Improve Business Education at a Chiropractic College?" (See related article on page 21.)

For the second consecutive year, the Council on Technic met in conjunction with the ACC Conference.

The council's meeting was organized

by Dr. Ralph Filson, Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science at Logan and Council on Technic President.

Dr. Goodman The Council on Technic includes representatives of all ACC colleges and serves as a liaison between the colleges and practicing doctors for the development of adjusting methods. The council functions as a centralized organization compiling information about adjusting techniques.

Also during the ACC meeting, Logan Health Centers Chief of Staff Dr. Ronald Kelemen was elected to a two-year term as vice chairperson of the Chiropractic Clinical Administrators. The CCA is the clinical administration specialty group of the ACC. The clinical administrators' group was one of the first chiropractic college specialty groups to meet regularly.

Giving the keynote address at the ACC conference was Arden Bercovitz, PhD, a reproductive endocrinologist.

Dr. Bercovitz's talk was titled "Einstein Alive ." Other speakers at the conference addressed topics including testing and assessment and student disability. In addition, leaders of the Association for the History of Chiropractic gave a presentation.

Logan College Participates 1n MSCA ''Legislative Day'' A bus filled with 36 enthusiastic Logan students departed from the campus early in th e morning on March 25 for a trip to Missouri's capital , Jefferson City. The students were accompanied by Dr. Allen Parry, Dean of Postgraduate Education at Logan, and Dr. Rita Kennedy, a member of the Logan clinical faculty.

The students traveled to Jefferson City to participate in the Missouri State Chiropractors Association (MSCA) annual Legislative Day. The students' role was to support the MSCA by providing educational information to legislators. Licensed doctors - members of the MSCA were lobbying for continuation of direct access for patients to chiropractic services under managed care legislation .

Upon arriving in Jefferson City, Logan students attended a briefing by the MSCA, then distributed lumbar support cushions and information about chiropractic education to offices of all Missouri senators and

state representatives, 140 legislators in all. The students also worked in a booth in the rotunda of the state capitol building, where they provided

blood pressure screenings and spinal analysis services to members of the General Assembly (the House and Senate) and their legislative aides.

Students gathered in front of the Logan Administration Center at 7 a.m . to board the bus to jefferson City.

Dr. Goodman, Students Attend Legislative Conference Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman and six Logan students were among attendees at the American Chiropractic Association's annual legislative conference, held March 6-8 in Washington , D.C. Representing the Logan student body were Owen Bartruff, President of the Logan Student Doctors Council, and five Logan Student ACA leaders : Jason Goodman, President; Kevin Howard, Vice President; Bart

Coleman, Treasurer; Jim Darrach, Secretary; and Aixa Sanchez, Legislative Representative.

Dr. Goodman and the students visited offices of legislators from their hometown districts and of Missouri legislators . Their agenda included a session with U.S. Rep . Jim Talent of Missouri's 2nd Congressional District, which includes Chesterfield .

Topics discussed with legislators included proposals to eliminate the

X-ray requirement for chiropractic patients on Medicare . President Clinton's 1997 budget proposal addresses elimination of the requirement. The proposal has bipartisan support, with U.S. Rep. Phil Crane, a Republican from illinois, recently announcing plans to introduce legislation supporting the elimination of the X-ray requirement.

Logan Graduate Helps Bring Chiropractic Research to Major University Dr. James Willis of Pensacola, Fla. has been retired from practice for seven years, but like many retired Logan alumni, this 1949 graduate still has a passionate interest in ensuring a strong future for chiropractic. Dr. Willis has found a unique way to con- ~ tinue contributing to the profession : raising funds to support the proposed Endowed Chiropractic Chair and Biomechanical Research Program at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

DCs in Florida and elsewhere already have donated approximately $730,000 of the $1 million required from the chiropractic profession to support the chair and research program . When th e profession reaches its fund -raising goal, the State of Florida will provide $750,000 in matching funds.

"In 54 years of personal experience with chiropractic - and 41 years in practice - I've seen it all/' says Dr. Willis. "The Wilk vs. AMA victory gave me great satisfaction. But the prospect of this University Chair excites me beyond measure.

"Research on human biomechanics performed at a state university with a direct relationship with chiropractic- will help us enormously in continuing to gain credibility and acceptance among other health professionals and the public/' says Dr. Willis. "This program will benefit chiropractic everywhere, so I encourage all members of the Logan community to co nsider supporting this great opportunity for our profession."

Dr. Willis says the chiropractic profession already is providing input to FSU, which has appointed Florida

Chiropractic Association president Dr. Joe Johnson and Lincoln Chiropractic Education and Research Fund (LCERF) chairman Dr. Ed Maurer to the Advisory Board of its College of Human Sciences.

"Officials of FSU have been very supportive and are eager to establish the endowed chair and initiate work in the research program/' says Dr. Willis. "Any donation, small or large, will make a difference as we work toward our goal."

Alumnus Provides Care for Boxing Champion For 1983 Logan graduate Dr. Stephen Castor, a knockdown is a good thing - but o nly when his patient is knocking down his opponent. Since 1990, Dr. Castor has provided care fo r Intern ational Boxing Federation heavywe ight champion Michael Moorer.

Dr. Castor, now retired from practice, travels with M oorer to fights and provides care whil e Moorer is training.

He also is Moorer's personal man ager.

The doctor and patient were introduced by Dr. Frederick Lewerenz, Kronk Gym Team Physician . Kronk Gym, founded by Emanuel Stewart, is located in Detroit, and D r. Castor prac-

ticed in nearby Dearborn, Mich.

Stewart has trained many boxing champions, including World Boxing Asso c iation heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield.

Last year, on the same program as the widely publicized fight in whi ch Ho lyfield defeated Mike Tyson for the WBA champio nship, Moorer defeated Franco is Botha of South Africa to retain his IBF title.

"M ichael was injured during the fight, but he did not break his j aw as we first feared/' says Dr. Castor.

Moorer, wh o now has a 39-1 record, retain ed th e IB F championship aga in in M arch of this yea r,

defeating Vaughn Bean. There were no kno ckdowns in the fight, but judges gave Moorer a majority decision victory, awarding him more points than Bean.

One of Holyfield's three losses prior to defeatin g Tyson was to Moorer, who will fight the winner of a June 29 rematch between Tyson and Holyfi eld. In th e mea ntime, Dr. Castor's focus is on keeping Moorer in good fighting shape. " It's very rewardin g to work with an athlete of this ca liber/' he says. " I've been a boxing fan for many years, and I rea lly enjoy traveling with Michael and providing his care."

Logan Hosts Chiropractic Radiology's First Cybercast Seminar The field of chiropractic diagnostic imagin g took a giant leap forwa rd on the inform ation superh ighway recently, when the Loga n Radiology Department organized and hosted the specialty's first cyberspace semin ar. Th e semi nar, " Radiology On line: Exploring the Tools of Cyberspace," was sponsored by the Am erican Chiropractic Association Council on Diagnostic Imaging.

seminars," explains Dr. Kettner. "So for this program we were not able to offer license renewal credits to the off-campus, cybercast participants."

Participants in the cybercast seminar did not need unusually sophisticated eq uipment. "To receive the seminar, a computer had to have 16 megabytes of RAM (Random Access Memory) and a processing speed of at least 1 00 megahertz," says Dr. Kettner. "To hear the spoken content, a speaker and sound card were required. Anyone logging on without a sound card and speaker could get the images and read text on the screen that related to the seminar dis-

Planning of the technically demanding cyberspace conference took nearly two years, says Dr. Kettner. "The available technology kept improving throughout the process," he says. "John Presley and Trent Hamm (information systems specialist at Logan) did a wonderful job of upgrading our software regularly, so that th e sound of th e presentation kept getting sharper and the images better."

Presenter for the cyberspace seminar was Dr. J. Todd Knudsen, Director of Clinical Diagnostic Imaging at National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill. The title of Dr. Knudsen's presentation was "Imaging of the Craniovertebral Junction: An Internet Cybercast."

The Council on Diagnostic Imaging designated the seminars presented

by Drs. Guebert and Knudsen as the Frank A. Hoffman and Arnold R. Hauser memorial lectures, respectively. The late Drs. Hoffman and Hauser were chiropractic radiologists who practiced in Illinois and were known for their generosity to th e chiropractic profession and chiropractic education.

Using a computer and modem , Dr. Knudsen sent his seminar's visual and spoken content through the Internet

to the Logan campus, where the cybercast originated.

"Participants in the cyberspace seminar were scattered throughout the United States," says Dr. Kettner.

"We have not been able to establish an exact number of participants because people logged on and off

cussion."

Future Applications: The Sky Is the Limit Dr. Kettner is bullish on the future of high-tech computer applications in diagnostic imaging . "Digital imaging approaches - although it does not quite reach - the level of quality of a film, " he says .

"Participants in the cyberspace seminar were scattered throughout the United States," says Dr. Kettner. their computers throughout the afternoon, but at any given time we had about 12 people on-line."

The seminar was not completely interactive, but a phone number that participants could call to ask questions appeared reg ularly on their computer screens. "The technology to arrange for direct interactive capability (via computer) was too complex for our first effort in this area," says Dr. Kettner.

"We also still need to find a way to verify participation in future cybercast

As a radiological consultant for doctors across the country and around the world, Dr. Kettner believes

First Cyberspace Seminar (continued from page 9) that within a few years he will receive images for evaluation primarily through the Internet, rather than having films delivered to his office.

"Eventually, most in-office imaging will be digitized," he says.

Dr. Kettner adds, "Dr. Marquinas, who has vast knowledge of electronic technologies, discussed during his presentation the possibilities for manipulating images to gather more information. We will be able to take images apart for study, stack them, and use serial views to generate a moving image showing biomechanics as the patient moves."

In addition - with virtual reality technology making it possible for a computer user to literally experience sights, sounds and other sensations of an environment created on the computer - Dr. Kettner says that students and doctors in the not-too-distant future will have another tool for learning and patient evaluation. "In the virtual reality computer environment, we will 'walk into' the neural foramen of a patient," he says.

Noting that the use of computerized anatomy "dissection" has been widely discussed among health care

educators, Dr. Kettner believes that most student doctors in all fields wi II eventually use computers for much of their study of anatomy. "I don't believe that for chiropractic students - or for any other health profession students - computerized dissection will ever completely replace handson dissection of cadavers in anatomy labs," he says . "But student doctors of the future will use computerized dissection extensively in the study of anatomy."

Technology Drives New Approaches to Teaching and learning For the immediate future, Dr. Kettner emphasizes the educational value of diagnostic imaging information available through the Internet.

Ambitious Logan students can access the many diagnostic imaging Web sites on computer terminals in the Student Doctors Council computer lab, or on their computers at home.

"In the future, there will be Internet lines into all lecture rooms at Logan," says Dr. Kettner, "so that we can increase multi-media capabilities in all of our teaching, projecting images from Web sites onto our screens as we do now in the 'smart' classroom.

Or. Carrick lectured on campus on May 19, speaking to students in Trimesters 6, 7, 8 and 9 and to members of th e Logan Neurology Club.

More and more of our students have grown up in - or worked in - a very technologically capable environment.

They are accustomed to using a wide variety of technologies for learning.

"In addition," says Dr. Kettner, "in the Radiology Department we are building a digital library of radiologic images, and we have a five-CO-ROM set with 77,000 images. We use the library primarily for training residents, but interns who are interested also can attend library case presentations.

We can take residents and interns through film images from the teaching library, then switch to review of cases from the Internet or on CD-ROM media."

In addition to assembling the digital library, Dr. Kettner says the Logan Radiology Department will have its own Web site - with case studies on-line within a year. He also hopes to develop a network of "cyberclinicians" - a network in which participants would link up for small-group tutorials.

"We will be able to utilize technology for the network that would make possible an interactive feature in tutorial sessions," he says. "Participants would be able to query the presenter.

Eventually, the network will most likely be multidisciplinary, aiding us in developing professional relationships with a wide variety of health professionals from other disciplines."

Dr. Kettner says that under the leadership of Logan President Dr. George Goodman, the college is becoming a leader in chiropractic education in the use of technology for education.

"Remote (off-site) education will augment on-site instruction in the future in many ways," says Dr. Kettner, "with the use of computer networks and videoconferencing. The cybercast seminar gave us just a peek at the potential of educational technology."

Student Leaders Enjoy Luncheon With Dr. Goodman Logan President Dr. George A. Logan Health Centers Introduce Electro-Auricular Therapy The Logan Health Centers have introduced electro-auricular therapy as a new adjunctive form of ca re for patients who receive care at the o utpatient centers. Logan operates outpatient Health Centers on the college campus in Chesterfield, in the St. Louis suburbs of St. Charles and Webster Groves and at three St. Louis-area Salvation Army facilities.

The new therapy was announced

by Health Centers Chief of Staff Ronald Kelemen, DC, with service having become available in all of the outpatient centers on May 1 .

The visit was planned by the St. Louis Publi c Schools Office of Career Educatio n, whi ch serves students attending St. Louis c ity and county schools.

The students represented two St. Louis-area high schools, Kirkwood and Rooseve lt. They w atched a videotape on chiropractic, toured Logan's campus and parti c ipated in

FACULTY PROFILE:

Dr. Gary Casper Meets the Challenge of Leading Logan's Chiropractic Science Division As a student at the University of Wisconsin during the 1960s, Dr. Gary Casper gave no thought to a career in health care. While completing requirements for Bachelor of Science degrees in civil engineering and city planning, he also took ROTC classes, which the university required at that time .

When he learned that he met requirements to become a military pilot, Dr. Casper traded in his plans for an engineering career for a chance to fulfill his dream of flying. He joined the U.S. Air Force as a pilot, spending 10 years on active duty and five years as a U.S. National Guard pilot.

After completing pilot training, Dr. Casper became a member of the first group of Air Force 2nd Lieutenants to become aircraft commanders of F-4 Phantom jet fighters. In 1971, the Air Force sent him to Vietnam, where he flew 172 combat missions, for a total of 500 combat hours during a oneyear tour of duty.

After leaving Vietnam , Dr. Casper spent the next several years as an Air Force instructor in California. He also participated in an exchange pilot program with the U.S. Navy, flying off the U .S.S. Ranger. His duties included flying as an aggressor pilot in simulation exercises against "top gun" students at Miramar Naval Air Station near San Diego .

"Then I found out I was going to be sent to a desk job in Europe for NATO," he says. "That wasn't for me."

Dr. Casper returned to his hometown, Black River Falls, Wis ., where he ran his family's propane gas business for two years. Seeking a new

career but uncertain of his future direction, Dr. Casper took a career aptitude test. "The top three careers listed when I received my results were medicine, dentistry and chiropractic," he says.

"I wasn't interested in medicine or dentistry," Dr. Casper explains. "I knew nothing about chiropractic, but I talked to my dad, and learned that he had been a chiropractic patient for a long time, which I had not known.

"I met with my father's doctor," Dr. Casper continues . "She gave me an exam and began telling me things that her findings suggested about my body, which were true ."

Impressed and intrigued, Dr. Casper visited other DCs . "I liked chiropractic's perspective on the body," he says. "I view medicine as an inter-

vention that is best-used for emergencies and chronic diseases such as diabetes, with spinal care - combined with patient education in nutrition, wellness, etc.- being the best way to prevent health care emergencies of many kinds."

Dr. Casper enrolled at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, graduating first in his class in 1984 . Prior to enrolling at Palmer although he had completed pre-chiropractic course requirements in physics and chemistry as an undergraduate - Dr. Casper had to meet undergraduate biology requirements.

While enrolled in biology classes, Dr. Casper met aspiring medical student Rebecca Green. The two married (continued on page 18)

PAGE 18 (continued from page 17) before he graduated from Palmer and moved to St. Louis when Dr. Green rece ived a scholarship to enroll in a joint MD/PhD degree program at Washington University.

In the meantime, Dr. Casper had discovered that day-to-day patient care probably would not be the ideal direction for his chiropractic career. " I had injured my wrist many times in aircraft carrier landings," he says. " I could only adjust two or three people in a row before experiencing a lot of pain ."

During Dr. Casper's student days, techniques such as Activator Methods that utilize instruments for adjusting were not yet taught at Palmer, so he believed his practice options were limited . Instead, he accepted an offer to join the Logan Radiology Department as a resid ent.

After completing the three-year res idency in diagnostic imaging at Logan in 1988 and passing the qualifying examination, Dr. Casper received Diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology (ACBR), the examining body of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology.

He became a diagnostic imaging consultant, consulting on cases seen

by DCs across the United States. " I rea lly enjoy the detective work involved in radiology," he says. "It's exciting to identify problems that are unusual or especially co mplex .

"I do miss the interact ion with patients, though," he adds . " I used to visit a lot of doctors' offices and consult on cases and meet patients. I don't have mu ch time to go out to offices now, but I often co nsult over the phone, especially with former Logan students who ask for my help."

Dr. Casper's teaching ca ree r at Logan began soon after he completed his residency. He had done some teaching as a resident, and thenPresident of Logan College Dr. Beatrice Hagen asked Dr. Casper to return to campus to teach in the Chiropractic Science Division.

Dr. Casper now teaches biomechanics and advanced orthopedics at Logan, and assists with spinal analysis classes and orthopedic laboratories.

In addition, since 1990, he has served as chairperson of Logan 's Chiropractic Science Division .

In addition to eight adjusting techniques- two required and six elective techniques for students in Trimesters 8, 9 and 10 - the diverse Chiropractic Science Division includes courses in spinal analysis, sports injury care, chiropractic philosophy, business administration and practice management. The division's orthopedic currkulum spans trimesters 2-5. It is the largest of Logan 's academic divisions, which also include Basic Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Research and Ergonomics .

Logan's Curriculum Change: A Complex Process Immediately upon assuming the chairmanship of th e Chiropractic Science Division, Dr. Casper began working intensely in a unique leadership rol e - that of facilitating the Chiropractic Science Division's work

After the new curriculum was implemented, Logan students began to gain hands-on experience with spinal palpation during the first trimester and to rece ive initial training in Diversified and Basic adjusting methods in Trim ester 2.

Based on the new curriculum, the November 1994 issue of Chiropractic Technique ranked Logan first among all North American colleges accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education for contact time in chiropractic technique courses. Dr. Casper says the article showed Logan having almost twice the number of contact hours as some other chiropractic colleges.

Recent Logan graduates are widely considered within the profession to have outstanding adjustive proficiency, which Dr. Casper attributes in part to the time devoted to adjusting in the curriculum. " Having hands-on experience early in their training definitely helps, too," he says, "and the fact that our technique instructors are among the top expe rts in the profession in their respective techniques also makes a difference.

"I always explain that the goals of

chiropractic and medicine are the same to help the patient get better, and aid the patient in remaining healthy." - Dr. Casper in revamping its program within the framework of a major curriculum restructuring by the co ll ege.

The focus of the new curriculum, which was impl emented trimester-bytrimester from 1991 to 1994, was ensuring intense focus throughout the curriculum on meeting the educational needs of future DCs. Day-to-day work on the curriculum change process was led by William Ramsey, PhD, Vice President of Academic

Reflecting this perspective, Council on Technic members associated with the ACC attend a second meeting each year in addition to the ACC conference - with the second meeting often featuring seminars on multitechnique applications.

"We hear presentations on how five or six techniques can be applied to one situation," says Dr. Filson . "We feel that our role is to examine the application of various techniques in an unbiased way."

The Council on Technic Panel of Advisers also has compiled a publication on technique terminology, for use at all of the colleges. The council's future plans, says Dr. Filson, include "exa mining how we can help the colleges evaluate and ensure the continued safety of chiropractic students during the teaching of techniques.

"Ou r overall goal," Dr. Filson con cludes, " is to be a centralized resource for the chiropractic educational community on many issues affecting all of the colleges ."

Upon meeting Drs. Casper and Green and learning of their respective careers, some people express surprise upon learni ng of the couple's mar-

riage, probably because they assume that the once-nearly universa l animosity of medical doctors toward chiropractors is as widespread as ever.

"If people seem surprised," says Dr. Casper, " I always explain that the goals of chiropractic and medicine are the same - to help the patient get better, and aid the patient in remaining healthy. The mechanisms we use to help patients differ, but we all make important contributions to health care."

New AV Equipment Enhances Learning Environment in Adjusting Labs Logan College recently invested nearly $3,500 in an audio-visual equipment package designed to enhance the learning environment in the two large-group adjusting labs on campus, located in the lower level of the Science, Research and Ergonomics Center (SB9 and SB1 0) .

Dr. John Martin of Southaven, Miss., a 1969 Logan graduate, contributed $1,000 of the total amount needed to fund the equipment.

The adjusting labs are used for instruction in Diversified and Logan Basic techniques - both required of all Logan students, who spend several trimesters studying each technique.

Drs. Ralph Barrale and Ralph Filson, Chiropractic Science Division faculty members, suggested that the college purchase the equipment. Drs. Barrale and Filson use similar equipment when teaching postgraduate seminars.

Logan Physical Plant and Media Production Department staff members installed the equipment. "We feel that this equipment will help make students' and instructors' I ives easier," says Media Production Coordinator Bill Weidler.

Simulation Program Helps Students Gain Business Knowledge, Confidence Rudolf P. Vrugtman, MBA, Instructor of Chiropractic Science, has taught business administration courses at Logan College for 14 years. As the business environment for health care practices has become increasingly complex, however, Vrugtman has found it increasingly difficult to impart to students - in a lecture format - the in-depth information and decision-making skills needed on a day-to-day basis by owners of chiropractic practices.

Recalling effective computer-based simulation exercises included in his graduate curriculum in business administration, Vrugtman decided to develop a similar program for his students at Logan. To evaluate the effectiveness of the program, he developed a questionnaire to be administered to students before and after their work with the simulation exercise . Th e survey includes 11 attitude/confidence questions and seven knowledge questions.

Vrugtman compiled results of initial responses to the questionnaire and gave a poster presentation- titled "Student Confidence in Business Acumen : Is There a Need to Improve Business Education at a Chiropractic College?" - at the March 1997 meeting of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) .

Results presented by Vrugtman were bas ed on responses from Logan's December 1996 graduating class, the first to complete the preand post-simulation survey. Vrugtman reported that the students' responses shifted in the direction of greater confidence in their business skills .

"Students sti II have some discomfort in this area after completing the simulation program, but it is not as strong as what we saw in pre-test results," says Vrugtman. "And we are still working on fine-tuning of the simulation exercise."

The business simulation exercise is based on numbers of patient visits to students during their internships in the Logan Health Centers. Students begin by completing forms to provide information about their "p ractices " including marketing, equipment, staffing and operating costs. They also develop fee schedules (in English and in CPT insurance code format) for their practices.

Vrugtman uses information furnished by each student to develop a balance sheet and income statement format for his or her "practice," which the student can accept or revise. Lon Beach, a retired St. Lou is-area banker, evaluates information on each student practice and "qualifies" each student for an equipment loan of a specified amount, and for a working capital line of credit.

In the meantime, students learn to use a computer-based patient accounting program available at Logan. They learn to enter new patient data, record office visit transactions and payments received, file insurance claims, print day sheets,

conduct month-end closing procedures, prepare patient statements and compile outstanding insurance claims reports. The latter reports include information on follow-up efforts and "aging" of receivables .

Once they have mastered the software, students begin recording their actual patient visits in the Logan Health Centers, using the individual fee schedules they have developed.

Vrugtman, who serves as each simulation practice's " accountant," prepares monthly financial statements and discusses them with the student.

Realistic practice expenses - including rent, salaries, payroll taxes, clinic supplies, advertising, entertainment, etc.- must be included in each practice's monthly financial statement.

"As we continue to measure the success of the simulation program, we will make improvements as needed," says Vrugtman. " We feel this program has much potential to help students understand the financial and operating consequences of decisions that they are considering implementing in their practices after graduation."

FACR Meeting Held at Logan The Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research (FACR) held its annual winter meeting at Logan College February 28March 2. The meeting was attended by about 50 doctors and students.

FACR was founded by the late Dr. I.N. Toftness, who studied at the postgraduate level under Logan College's founder, Dr. H .B. Logan. Dr. Toftness adapted Dr. Logan's adjusting method for use with his own lowforce system of adjusting.

Goodman joined FACR President Dr. Mike Hawkinson in welcoming the FACR meeting attendees to the Logan camp us . Dr. Hawkinson is the son of the late Dr. E. H . Hawkinson, a Logan faculty member who conducted extensive research on the Toftness system of adjusting.

lectures and demonstrations of Logan Basic and Toftness adjusting.

Dr. Brian Snyder, Assistant Professor of Chiropractic Science e>t Logan College and FACR Vice President, discussed his recent study, "Clinical Results of Thermography Study Using Toftness Techniqu e at Logan College of Chiropractic ." The study utilized the Toftness method of chiropractic adjusting on subjects with a variety of neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

The study was funded by a $20A25 grant from the FACR . Logan College's ongoing research on the Toftness method has been funded by FACR grants totaling nearly $300,000: Thermography measures and displays variations in skin surface temperature . It can monitor characteristic heat patterns present in many physical disorders and indicate phys-

iological responses such as nerve irritation, trigger points and changes in vascular flow.

Other FACR co nference speakers included Drs . David Toftness and Paul VanWyk . Dr. Toftness joined Dr. Snyder in giving Basic Technique lectures and demonstrations and discussing case presentations . Dr. VanWyk's topic was "Managed Care in the 21st Century."

In addition to Dr. Snyder, other Logan faculty members speaking at the FACR conference were Guy Dauphin, MS, Assistant Professor of Basic Science, and Gary Sanders, PhD, Director of Research and Ergonomics at Logan . Dauphin's topic was "Ne urology of the Chiropractic Subluxation." Dr. Sanders reported on the status of all Toftness research projects initiated at Logan College to date.

Doctors From China Visit Logan Campus When three doctors from China visited the Barnes-Jewish Hospital College of Nursing and Allied Health in May, they were to ld of the vast resources in health care in St. Louis.

Upon learning that the St. Louis area has a chiropractic co llege, the doctors asked their hosts to include a visit to the Logan ca mpus in their schedule.

The doctors represented the Ji ngmen School of Nursing and A llied Medical Sciences. Wang Qianxin, President and Professor; Tang Bensui, Vice PresidenU Associate Professor; and Li Wanjiu, Associate Professor, are trained in both Western and trad itional Ch inese medicine.

The Jingmen school is a "sister school" of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital College of Nursing and Allied Health.

Barnes-Jewish chose the Chinese institution as a sister school because of its location in Jingmen City in the provin ce of Hubei - li ke St. Louis, almost in the center of the country -

says Ruth Birch, PhD, Assistant Professor of Basic Sciences at Logan.

Dr. Birch also teaches pathophysiology to students in the Barnes-Jewish master's-level nurse practitioner program.

Dr. Birch, who helped arrange the Chinese doctors' visit to the Logan campus, joined Logan administrators and faculty members in welcoming the physicians to the co llege. The doctors were accompanied by the mayor of Jingmen City; an interpreter; and by their hosts, Sherry Pontious, PhD, RN and Pam Simpson, MSN, RN, CANP- dean and assistant professor, respectively - at the Barnesjewish co llege.

"The doctors were very interested in learning about the ro le of acupuncture in the U.S. hea lth care system," says Dr. Kettner, who led the Chinese visitors on a tour of the Logan ca mpus. Dr. Kettn er said the v isitors w ere eager to discuss similarities in the vi ewpoints of chiropracti c and trad itional Chinese medic ine, and the teaching of acupuncture at postgraduate certifi cation levels at Logan and other chiropracti c co lleges.

The Ch inese guests provided an acupuncture demonstration during their visit, and later enjoyed d inner on ca mpus w ith Logan rep resentatives. Logan student Jason Sm ith, who speaks Mandarin, assisted the doctors' interpreter in eas ing the language barrier.

Logan Hosts Community Arts Program More than 100 members of the St ..

Louis-area artistic and business communities visited the Logan campus on May 15, when the college hosted an event sponsored by the Chesterfield Arts Commission. The program, "Arts Alive: Transforming Your Community," focused on public art.

The Chesterfield Arts Commission was formed in 1995. A non-profit organization, the commission encourages the display of artwork in public areas of Chesterfield and is responsible for selecting artwork and display sites. The 29-square-mile, West St. Louis County suburb includes substantial public and commercial areas as well as upscale residential sections. Corporations and other organizations have begun donating and comm issioning artwork for publi c areas, in cooperation with the arts comm ission.

The system was planned as "an 18-mil e work of art," accordin g to Smith, who exp lained that Metro Link's nationally recogni zed design has been credited for helpin g to spur usage of the system far exceeding Bi-State's initial proj ectio ns.

Th e arts panel also inc luded two St. Louis-based artists whose publi c art works have been displ ayed throughout the United States. The art ists are Joel Sh apiro, a scu lptor w orking with iron, bronze and wood, and Robin Murez, a sculptor working primarily in glass.

In keeping with the theme of the event, Arts A I ive attendees received information on two striking v isua l elements of the Logan ca mpus: the co l-

lege's bell tower, and a scu lpture by noted American sculptor and painter Ernest Trova.

The tower, located in front of Logan 's admin istration center, was designed by the Leo A. Daly Company of St. Louis and constructed in 1960 for the M aryknoll Order. The priests so ld th eir campu s to Logan College in 1972 . The 120-foot bell tower we ighs 250 tons.

The Trova scu lpture is located in the Logan Health Center lobby. The 9foot metal work w as given to th e co llege in 1991 by art co llector Robert Lococo. Instrumental in the do nation of th e scu lpture was Dr. E.L. Strotheide of Gra nite C ity, Ill ., a Logan graduate and form er trustee of the co llege. The scu lpture is t itled "Abstract Variation ."
