The Fifth Annual “Lunch on Us” event will be held on Tuesday, July 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Logan cafeteria. All faculty, staff and students are invited to enjoy a free lunch on the college. The menu includes: char-grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts and veggie burgers, mostaccioli, Italian salad, Ted Drewes® frozen custard, iced tea, canned soda and bottled water. LOGAN PITCHES IN TO HELP JOPLIN RELIEF EFFORT A few months ago, Joplin, Mo. was struck by what many are described as one of the most severe and damaging tornadoes in the history of the United States; incurring considerable loss of life and property. In response to the storm tragedy in Joplin, the Office of Student Services in collaboration with the Student Doctors Council have been in frequent contact with local officials within the city of Joplin, seeking to identify how we may best support our Missouri neighbors as they continue the difficult and ardent task of rebuilding their shattered lives.

After much dialogue and careful planning, it was decided to align Logan’s institutional response efforts in partnership with the American Red Cross and the United Way of Missouri respectively. This Saturday, July 30 Logan will sponsor transportation for a one-day service trip to Joplin that will include 43 students as well as Director of Student Services James Paine and Robert Powell, director of sports and activities. Transportation is being provided via coach transport shuttle both to and from Joplin as part of the community relief effort to help Joplin clean-up and rebuild.

OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE CAMPUS Dr. Norman Kettner, professor and chair of Logan’s Radiology Department, was featured recently in an MRI update article on the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) website.

Jeffrey S. Ware, DC, DABCI, a faculty member and the clinician at Bogey Hills Health Center, has been elected as president of the ACA Council on Diagnosis and Internal Disorders. This council focuses on promoting and educating Doctors of Chiropractic in the field of primary care. It is currently updating and restructuring its Diplomate program to meet the current needs in primary care as well as working with the NBCE to develop a test that would be nationally recognized. This position also allows Dr. Ware a seat in the ACA House of Delegates. Congratulations, Dr. Ware.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital is sponsoring a kickball tournament and needs umpires. Here are the details: August 13 in Shaw Park, Clayton First game is at 10 a.m., last official game is at 3 p.m. with playoffs following During the day, there are 8 games played at one time out of a field of 40 teams Each game lasts 30 minutes A total of 8 umpires are needed per shift Shifts are: 10-1; 1-4 (4 umps will be asked to stay another hour or two for playoffs) Umpires need to attend a brief training session either the day of or maybe some evening Umps will be given a t-shirt, lunch and plenty of water (refreshments will follow) For more information, contact Matthew Viejo, a Tri 9 Logan student and a coordinator at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, or Logan Student Services office.

APPLIED KINESIOLOGY CLUB MEETS TUESDAY, JULY 26 The Applied Kinesiology Club will meet Tuesday, June 28 at 11:05 a.m. in room G40. Dr. Katharine Conable, associate professor in the Chiropractic Science division, will teach the Tuesday meetings of the A.K. club, beginning with the most basic basics of A.K. Through the trimester, videos of Dr. Goodheart telling his stories of the early discoveries in AK and patient management clinical pearls will be shown. Tuesday’s meeting affords an opportunity to practice these and more advanced AK skills with the help of club officers and experienced club members. All trimester students are welcome to these hands-on workshops. No previous experience required. Learn to evaluate muscle function with scientific precision and to use muscle responses as functional neurological feedback. Gain certainty on your ability to correct postural deviations and to identify subluxations. Learn simple manual methods of optimizing muscle function to prevent injury and help adjustments hold.

SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, and Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study.

Diagnostic imaging fellow, Eve E. Bonic, DC, DACBR, is recruiting subjects for a second research project entitled, “Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament: Thickness of Injured Ligaments.”

Subjects between the ages of 18-45 who have had ankle pain or an ankle sprain within the past year and who do not have a history of ankle fracture, ankle surgery or diabetes mellitus qualify for this study. NEXT CHESTERFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MUSICAL CONCERT IS JULY 26 A FREE summer tradition continues this June as the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce once again presents its concert series in Faust County Park on Tuesday evenings. Every Tuesday night, Faust Park comes alive with concert goers, food, dancing and of course, the sounds of the best toe-tapping live music around! The June 28 concert series will feature the Ralph Butler Band. All concerts and parking are free of charge. The park opens at 5:15 p.m. with pre-concert entertainment for children provided by the city of Chesterfield Parks Department and art projects courtesy of Chesterfield Arts. Affordable concessions are available. Concert goers can purchase soda, beer, wine, water, brats, hot dogs, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, popcorn, candy, snacks, Sheridan’s frozen custard and more at the Chamber’s concession stand. Saturday - Monday – September 3 - 5 – CLOSED Tuesday, September 6 – RESUME REGULAR HOURS REMEMBERING “THIS DATE IN HISTORY” The USS Indianapolis, an American cruiser, holds a singular place in history due to the circumstances of her sinking, which led to the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. On 30 July 1945, shortly after delivering critical parts for the first atomic bomb used in combat to the U.S. air base at Tinian, the Indianapolis was torpedoed by an Imperial Japanese Navy submarine. The ship sank in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remaining crew of 880 men faced exposure, dehydration and shark attacks as they waited for assistance while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of an American plane on routine patrol. Only 316 sailors survived.
