George Goodman threw his best pitch as part of the “first-pitch” ceremony for Logan’s Chiropractic Professionals Night with the Cardinals on Friday, July 8 game at Busch Stadium. In addition to Dr. Elizabeth Goodman, dean of university programs, other Logan individuals who walked onto the field for the pitch ceremony included raffle winners Sr. Sheila Bennett, Academic Affairs; Carol Guntorius, Admissions; Tri 5 student David (Patrick) McNamara; and Tri 9 student Bethany Meeks; as well as photographer Vince McGee and videographer Michael Chappell, both of Logan’s Media Department.

LOGAN’S SENIOR ADMINISTRATORS TO SERVE “LUNCH ON US,” JULY 27 There is such a thing as a free lunch…at least, once a year on the Logan campus. The Fifth Annual “Lunch on Us” event will be held on Tuesday, July 27 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Logan cafeteria. All faculty, staff and students are invited to enjoy a free lunch on the college. The menu includes: char-grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts and veggie burgers, mostaccioli, Italian salad, Ted Drewes® frozen custard, iced tea, canned soda and bottled water. OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE CAMPUS The Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA) will host a guest speaker at 11 a.m. Monday July 11 in room 142 A. Logan’s Dr. Martha Kaeser will present a lecture on "Cardiovascular Disease in Women" which will include a presentation as well as an ultra-sonographic vascular demonstration.

Dr. Jay Elliott reports that NCMIC is scheduled to be on campus on July 12 to present its annual “Starting into Practice” seminar to the trimester 7, 8 and 9 students. The speakers will Ms. Ginger Marcinkowski and Dr. Braxton Pulley. The seminar will be in the Purser Center from 8-11:30 a.m.

The Logan College Student Doctors’ Council (SDC) will be sponsoring a movie night on Tuesday, July 12.

This event was made possible by Logan alumnus Dr. Loomis, DC, FIACA. The movie being shown is "Source Code." There will be a catered meal beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Purser Center, followed by a show time of 8:30 p.m. (sundown) for the movie. The running time of the movie is 93 minutes. Popcorn, candy and drinks

will also be available. An admission price of $3 will cover the cost of food, drink, popcorn and one piece of candy. Please take a study break and come join us for a great night. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Keri Szwarc, financial officer at Logan, advises August 2011 graduates to please stop by the Financial Aid Offices to pick up their Exit Counseling Paperwork. This paperwork must be completed and returned to Financial Aid prior to Graduation Checkout. Your packets can be picked up in office 267.

The Dean’s List Certification Lunch is scheduled July 14 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Purser Center lobby.

The next Logan faculty meeting is July 14. Elections will be conducted at this meeting.

The Student Doctors’ Council is sponsoring “Pineapple Fest” on Friday, July 15 at the Logan Pavilion with good food, music, and fun. The SDC invites everyone to attend. The party will run from 6 until 10 p.m. See you there.

Some 52 prospective students and a total of 113 visitors (not including Fredbird) attended the June 25 Slice of Logan admissions event on campus. Alumni presenters included Logan graduates Dr. Dana Mercer, assistant professor in the Chiropractic and Clinical Science divisions (August 1998); Dr. Kern McMurtrie (Dec. 2000); and Dr. Steve Clarke (Dec. 1982).

Three Logan students have been selected as senior interns this trimester at the CHIPS community health clinic in north St. Louis. They are Nick Wachtel, Elisabeth Pang and Tara Adams.

Kent S. Greenawalt, president and CEO of Foot Levelers, Inc., will be the commencement speaker at Logan’s August 20 graduation ceremony. He will be presented an honorary doctorate of humanities at this event.

Welcome to Richard Meyer, who began work July 5 as the new evening custodian at Logan.

Congratulations to Jamie Richards, executive secretary for Administrative Affairs and Institutional Advancement, on her engagement to David Bass. A fall 2012 wedding is planned.

LOGAN FACULTY NEWS Dr. Norman Kettner, chair of Logan’s Radiology Department, had a Book Review published in the March 2011 JACA Online volume 48 No 2 of Skeletal Imaging: Atlas of the Spine and Extremities, 2nd Edition by Taylor, John AM; Hughes, Tudor H; Resnick, Donald; Maryland Heights MO, Saunders/Elsevier.

Dr. Cheryl Hawk, Logan’s director of clinical research, recently had two articles accepted for publication in professional journals, Preventive Medicine and the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. APPLIED KINESIOLOGY CLUB MEETS JULY 12 The Applied Kinesiology Club will meet Tuesday, June 28 at 11:05 a.m. in room G40. Dr. Katharine Conable, associate professor in the Chiropractic Science division, will teach the Tuesday meetings of the A.K. club,

beginning with the most basic basics of A.K. Through the trimester, videos of Dr. Goodheart telling his stories of the early discoveries in AK and patient management clinical pearls will be shown. Tuesday’s meeting affords an opportunity to practice these and more advanced AK skills with the help of club officers and experienced club members. All trimester students are welcome to these hands-on workshops. No previous experience required. Learn to evaluate muscle function with scientific precision and to use muscle responses as functional neurological feedback. Gain certainty on your ability to correct postural deviations and to identify subluxations. Learn simple manual methods of optimizing muscle function to prevent injury and help adjustments hold.

SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, and Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study.

Diagnostic imaging fellow, Eve E. Bonic, DC, DACBR, is recruiting subjects for a second research project entitled, “Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament: Thickness of Injured Ligaments.”

Subjects between the ages of 18-45 who have had ankle pain or an ankle sprain within the past year and who do not have a history of ankle fracture, ankle surgery or diabetes mellitus qualify for this study. The ATFL ultrasound scan will take less than 30 minutes.

LOGAN HEALTH CENTERS IN THE COMMUNITY July 14: Logan intern Colleen Kelley will present the lecture Preventing Falls and Safe Lifting to employees of Kennelwood Pet Resorts. This is the nineteenth lecture in a series of monthly lectures at Kennelwood’s monthly Safety Meeting that is required attendance for all Kennelwood employees.

July 15: Logan interns will provide complimentary soft tissue and stretching at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of St. Charles.

July 16: Logan interns will provide complimentary postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings at

the Kinloch Learning Center’s Back to School Health Fair.

NEXT CHESTERFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MUSICAL CONCERT IS JULY 12 A FREE summer tradition continues this June as the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce once again presents its concert series in Faust County Park on Tuesday evenings. Every Tuesday night, Faust Park comes alive with concert goers, food, dancing and of course, the sounds of the best toe-tapping live music around! The June 28 concert series will feature the Non-Stop Band. All concerts and parking are free of charge. The park opens at 5:15 p.m. with pre-concert entertainment for children provided by the city of Chesterfield Parks Department and art projects courtesy of Chesterfield Arts. Affordable concessions are available. Concert goers can purchase soda, beer, wine, water, brats, hot dogs, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, popcorn, candy, snacks, Sheridan’s frozen custard and more at the Chamber’s concession stand. Seating is comfortable and informal so bring blankets and lawn chairs and put on your dancing shoes.
