January 24 - 30, 2011 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS PRESENTATION IS FEBRUARY 25 In order to begin a new tradition and honor the selected scholarship recipients, the formerly-scheduled June Scholarship Award Ceremony and Luncheon will be held on Friday, February 25, 2011, the day before the Bachelor of Science commencement. Classes will be dismissed between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Purser Center lobby. ALL students, faculty and staff are invited. At 11:30 a.m., a buffet lunch will be served in the Purser Center lobby for the scholarship recipients and their guests, faculty and staff. All other students will have a free pizza and Ted Drewes® lunch in the Logan cafeteria. (Note: Scholarship recipients taking the NBS Review will be excused during the one late morning session.)

OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE LOGAN CAMPUS Logan faculty member and District 1 MSCA President Dr. Patrick Montgomery reports that District 1 of the Missouri State Chiropractors Association (MSCA) will hold its monthly meeting on Jan 24 in room 156 B on the Logan campus at 7:30 p.m. All members of the Logan Chapter of the Student MSCA and any student interested in practicing in Missouri upon graduation are invited attend. Dr. Todd Frisch, current president of the ACA Council on Acupuncture, will be the speaker. He will be conduct a follow-up discussion on his presentation at the last MSCA Seminar on Homotoxicity with a question-and-answer period at the end. A light dinner will be served. The meeting will conclude by 9 p.m.

The Clinic Health Center Lab is currently in need of two students to work as Montgomery Health Center lab techs for the Spring 2011 trimester and beyond. The job pays $9 per hour. Students must be Federal Work Study eligible to apply. (Please see the Financial Aid Office to determine your eligibility.) The duties involved include: blood draws, urine tests, and EKGs. Prior medical tech experience is also preferred for these positions. The positions are part-time with varied hours, Monday through Saturday. It’s yoga time again! Yoga instructor Ellen Fercho will lead the class through a 75-minute workout designed for ALL levels. Ellen will demonstrate yoga for beginners and intermediates and poses to challenge those who are ready to take it to the next level.

LOGAN ALUMNUS NAMED PRESIDENT OF THE ILLINOIS CHIROPRACTIC SOCIETY Congratulations to David Flatt, DC, DABCO, a December 1991 Logan graduate, who was recently named president of the Illinois Chiropractic Society (ICS), effective Jan. 1, 2011. The ICS represents the chiropractic profession in Illinois. As ICS president, Dr. Flatt will serve as a member of the six-person executive committee of the ICS board of directors and act as chairperson for the Illinois Chiropractic Society Board of Directors, which holds responsibility for the general leadership functions of the ICS. He previously served in a number of board positions with the ICS including first vice president, secretary of the executive board, and was the past district president of the Northern District. Additionally, he lectures on clinical topics and contributes as a regular columnist to the ICS Journal.

The ICS was established in 1926 as a non-profit organization and is acknowledged in the Illinois Medical Practice Act of 1987. It promotes and advances professional standards of ethics, education, training and quality chiropractic health care for all of its members while fostering ongoing training and safe ethical practice techniques.

Dr. Flatt is a chiropractic physician and board certified chiropractic orthopedist who has practiced in St. Charles/Geneva, Illinois area since 1992. He is a partner with Greater Valley Medicine, which is an integrated office offering chiropractic and internal medicine services. Dr. Flatt also teaches orthopedics in the Masters Program at Logan.

LOGAN HEALTH CENTERS IN THE COMMUNITY January 25: Logan interns will offer complimentary postural, body fat analysis and scoliosis screenings to parents and children at the Carondelet Leadership Academy Community Health Fair.

January 29: Logan interns will offer complimentary postural and body fat analysis screenings to the public at the Yoga and Spa Magazine Living Fit Expo at Plaza Frontenac.

AS PUBLISHED PREVIOUSLY‌ Learn enzyme nutrition in the spring trimester. The postgraduate department is now accepting students entering trimester 6 or above for the Internal Health Specialist (IHS) program, taught by Dr. Howard F. Loomis Jr., DC. This program will provide you with a clinical perspective on digestive health and give you a hands-on means of analyzing your patients’ nutritional status. The use of digestive and therapeutic enzymes in clinical practice will also be discussed. This is an extremely practical, foundational course for any student who is interested in nutrition. Students will purchase class notes, but the tuition is FREE. The IHS program is a six-session course.

Dr. Laney Nelson, director of the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center on the Logan campus, will present a lower extremity stress syndromes seminar at the 5th Annual Professional Football Chiropractic Educational Seminar on February 27 in Indianapolis, Ind. Dr. Nelson will explain how to manage these syndromes with taping and posting the sock liners and shoes as well as through manipulation and talar glide function. He will leave Logan on Feb. 26 and return the evening of Feb. 27 and will take four (4) students with him. Please stop by the BIOFREEZE Center to sign up for this event.

JUST FOR FUN: I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW Have you ever considered the vastness of the Internet? Think about how many e-mails are sent each day or how many hours of video are uploaded daily. There is no need to “Google” it. Pingdom, an Internet monitoring service, has compiled loads of data on Internet usage. In 2010, there were 7 trillion e-mails sent; on an average day, 294 billion e-mails were sent; and there were 255 million websites.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch recently reported that St. Louis was again named one of the top 10 most "literate cities" in the U.S. In a survey by Central Connecticut State University, St. Louis tied for the No. 9 spot with Portland, Ore. Washington D.C. was first, followed by Seattle, Wash. This year, St. Louis gained ground in the bookseller category and was rated second to Seattle in number of bookstores per capita.

Speaking of St. Louis, a new report from online coupon aggregator Coupons.com calls St. Louis the 4th most frugal city in the nation. The rankings, which looked at cities with a population of 300,000 or more, is based on a city’s total coupon savings and coupon users relative to the city’s size. Atlanta holds the No. 1 spot as residents there are nearly 10 times more likely to use coupons than the average U.S. consumer.
