February 28– March 6, 2011 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED A special awards presentation was held on Friday, February 25 in the lobby of the William D. Purser, DC Center to announce the winners of a number of student scholarships. The individual scholarships were provided by donors who set the criteria, in conjunction with representatives of Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs, for selection of deserving recipients. Candidates’ submissions were considered as part of a blind review by the Logan Scholarship Committee, which included Logan faculty members Dr. Donna Mannello, Dr. Brian Snyder, Dr. Ralph Filson, and Dr. Ralph Barrale, vice president of chiropractic affairs and dean of the postgraduate program, as well as Associate Dean of Student Services Sandra Perriello, Registrar Alva Rozar and Director of Financial Aid Linda Haman.

Each recipient received an awards certificate and had an individual photograph taken with Dr. George A. Goodman, Logan’s president. Congratulations to all the scholarship award winners. Thank you to all the generous scholarship donors.

Also at this event, 11 students were recognized for making the Dean’s List in consecutive trimesters. The three consecutive trimester recipients included: Monia R. Kiefer, Justin T. Woodrow, Todd J. Sonquist, Jingpu Li, Jerry D. Leech, John H. Keefe, Darron E. Bell and Carolyn P. Maxfield. Six consecutive trimester recipients included: Trenton S. Stevens, Elisabeth M. Pang and Loriann M. Laugle. Congratulations to all.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES AWARDED AT FEBRUARY 26 COMMENCEMENT Logan University officially awarded 192 students the undergraduate degree of either a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology or a Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences. Fifty-five of these students participated in the formal commencement held Feb. 26 in the William D. Purser, DC Center on the Logan campus. The ceremony was led by Logan President George A. Goodman, DC, FICC; Elizabeth A. Goodman, DC, PhD, dean of university programs; Dr. Robert Scott, vice president of academic affairs, and Carl Saubert IV, PhD, associate vice president for academic affairs. Logan faculty member Dr. Daryl Ridgeway, dean of the chiropractic

sciences department, presented the commencement speech. These students are already enrolled or will enroll in Logan’s Doctor of Chiropractic program.

MAKE THE MARCH 1 TRIP TO MSCA LEGISLATIVE DAY IN JEFFERSON CITY On Tuesday, March 1, doctors of chiropractic from all around the state will be converging on the capitol in Jefferson City for the MSCA’s Legislative Day. District 1 will be providing a bus for our members and interested students and faculty from Logan to participate. This Legislative Day is very important for the future of our profession in this state. House Bill No. 146 is the bill we are backing this session. This bill, when passed and signed by the governor, will include chiropractors and chiropractic care for coverage of Medicaid patients.

Currently, we are not covered. Medicaid (MO Healthnet program) coverage is what is necessary for new graduates to participate the program for serving in underserved counties in Missouri. A national program is set up so that if they serve in those counties, for each year served, 1/4th of their college debt is paid. Therefore, after four (4) years of service, their college loans are forgiven. At the same time, those counties get great chiropractic care for new DCs. Other professions get this advantage, why not us? The first set for Missouri is to get Medicaid coverage for chiropractic Please join us in Jefferson City to push for this legislation! The bus will begin boarding at 7:30 a.m. and leave the Logan College campus at 8 a.m. for the trip to the state capitol building. It will return to Chesterfield at approximately 4:45 p.m. District 1 will be picking up the expense for transportation. This is a win-win situation for the cause of chiropractic in Missouri. OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE LOGAN CAMPUS The February Meeting of District 1 of the MSCA will be meeting on Monday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in room 156B. Members of the Logan Chapter of the Student MSCA and field doctor members of the MSCA will be finalizing plans for the MSCA Leg Day, March 1. Students are welcome to attend. A light dinner will be served.

Linda Haman, director of financial aid, would like to remind all students to file a 2011-2012 FAFSA using 2010 tax information. It is important that you file as soon as possible as this process could take four to six weeks to complete. Your Student Aid Report (your FAFSA results) must be completed by April 15, 2011 for Perkins consideration. Because of the volume, the possibility of needing to provide additional information and corrections that may need to be made, it is strongly recommended that you complete the initial step of filing your FAFSA no later than March 11, 2011. Please do not put delay this very important task. Filing on time is each student’s responsibility. Filing late may prevent a student from having their loans and refunds ready for the beginning of each trimester.

Congratulations to Dr. Christophe Dean, a member of Logan’s Board of Trustees, who was recently appointed to the Michigan Board of Chiropractic by Governor Rick Snyder. Dr. Dean, of Troy, Mich. has practiced for 35 years has been with Dean Chiropractic in Berkley since 2000. He was named “2008 Chiropractor of the Year” by the Michigan Association of Chiropractors. He was also involved in the merger of the two institutes that created the Michigan Association of Chiropractors and serves as president of the MAC. He earned a bachelor's degree from Penn State University and is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Ia. Dr. Dean’s son, Dr. Jonathan Dean is a December 2008 Logan graduate.

Vince McGee, MS, Ed, and Nicholas Farha, PhD, both of Logan’s Media Department, are presenting at the 22nd Annual Southwest RCET (Regional Consortium for Education and Technology) Conference and Tech Expo on March 2 on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield.

Logan College and its Student Doctors’ Council (SDC) are seeking volunteers to run the carnival game stations at the kickoff event for the 2011 Arthritis Foundations’ “The Walk” awards dinner. Some of the volunteers will receive hours for professional development and others can satisfy some marketing hours. All of the volunteers will eat Hodak’s famous fried chicken and have fun while they support a great cause. We need at least 30 people to guarantee the success of the event. Volunteers are asked to arrive between 4:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday March 2 at DeSmet Jesuit High School.

Tri-10 students Carson Aune and Shelly Severns have been selected as interns at Logan’s health center clinic at Scott Air Force Base, working under the direction of Charles Portwood, DC. Diagnostic imaging fellow, Eve E. Bonic, DC, DACBR, is recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament: Thickness of Normal Ligaments.”

Subjects between the ages of 18-45 who have not had ankle pain or an ankle sprain within the past year and who do not have a history of ankle fracture, surgery or diabetes mellitus qualify for this study. The ATFL ultrasound scan will take less than 30 minutes.

Dates are now posted through the end of April for students to sign up for the two-day rotation at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Students will be able to shadow Dr. Scott Gibbs in surgery on day one and in clinical rotations on day two. Dates are available weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Health Center Department is currently looking for a work study student to fill the position of clerk, health center data entry, as soon as possible. The job pays $8.00/hour. The student hired will work 12 hours or less per week. The duties primarily consist of filing and will not include data entry. FROM THE OFFICE OF STUDENT SERVICES SACA NEWS: Logan SACA is proud to report another successful year of advocating for chiropractic on Capitol Hill. Fourteen students spent four days in Washington D.C., learning how to lobby our nation's elected members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Key issues were discussed included the

Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Frontline Student Loan Repayment, and expansion in Tricare and the VA. The Logan delegation also had the opportunity to engage in SACA business meetings, listen to world renowned speakers during the Specialty Council Forum (planned by Logan's own Holly A. Tucker), such as Dr. FR Carrick; attend the Women's Forum; and of course, have plenty of time to sightsee! Those who made the trip included Trimester 9 students Holly A. Tucker, Jude Miller and Kristina Berry; Trimester 8 student Brian Laiderman; Trimester 5 student Joshua Rivard; Trimester 4 students Micheal Reed and Erin Wyant; Trimester 3 student John Ellis; Trimester 2 students Jaron Banks, along with his wife Meagan, Joshua Bodine-Lederman, Abbi Sunner and Aaron Rickelman; and Trimester 1 student Megan Lindsey.

March 2: Logan interns will offer complimentary postural and body fat analysis screenings at the CTA, Inc. Employee Health Fair.

March 2: Logan interns will offer postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings at the Sappington Farmer’s Market.

March 3: Logan interns will offer functional screenings with the assistance of the BIOFREEZE residents for the Kirkwood High School track team.

NEXT APPLIED KINESIOLOGY MEETING ISTUESDAY, MARCH 1 The Applied Kinesiology Club will meet on Tuesday, March 1 at 11:05 a.m. in room G40. Dr. Katharine Conable, associate professor in the Logan Chiropractic Science division, will teach the Tuesday meetings of the A.K. club, beginning with the most basic basics of A.K. This week’s topic is vertebral challenge, low-force vertebral corrections and supervised adjusting practice. All trimester students are welcome to these hands-on workshops. No previous experience is required. These meetings afford students an opportunity to practice these and more advanced AK skills with the help of club officers and experienced club members. Learn to evaluate muscle function with scientific precision and to use muscle responses as functional neurological feedback. Gain certainty on your ability to correct postural deviations and to identify subluxations. Learn simple manual methods of optimizing muscle function to prevent injury and help adjustments hold. Through the trimester, videos of Dr. Goodheart telling his stories of the early discoveries in AK and then practicing those techniques will be presented.

CITY OF CHESTERFIELD MAKES “TOP-TEN” LIST The St. Louis Post-Dispatch recently reported that the city of Chesterfield was named a "Top Ten Town"

by Missouri Life magazine. Chesterfield was rated number two on the statewide list after Joplin, Mo. Towns with populations between 2,500 and 50,000 were considered for this designation. The first round of criteria for the designation was based on having favorable data in education, crime and employment statistics. Next, an evaluation was made of a town's quality of life including amenities available to residents such as health care, restaurants, libraries, theaters, performing arts, parks, trails and religious denominations. Also considered were attributes such as recycling programs, sales taxes, household income and air quality.

Also, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Chesterfield's population increased by 1.5 percent in the last 10 years, with 682 more people in Chesterfield currently than there were living here in 2000. The estimated population is now 47, 484. Chesterfield is now the 14th largest city in Missouri.

Faculty member Dr. Patrick Montgomery reports that Logan’s History of Chiropractic class will celebrate the birthday of Dr. D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, on March 7. He was born in 1845.
