The theme is: “How Muscle Work fits into a Chiropractic Practice.” Hot chocolate and a roaring fire will be waiting for all who attend. The Fireside Chat series is sponsored by the Pi Kappa Chi Fraternity. FROM THE OFFICE OF STUDENT SERVICES TUTORING OPPORTUNITIES: Schedules for the current free group tutoring sessions are posted on the Student Services bulletin board by the cafeteria as well as in the Student Center. Also, remember that there is a notebook with the names of tutors who provide one-on-one tutoring. All students may receive up to 2 hours per week, per course of free one-on-one tutoring. ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS PRESENTATION IS FEBRUARY 25 In order to begin a new tradition and honor the selected scholarship recipients, the formerly-scheduled June Scholarship Award Ceremony and Luncheon will be held on Friday, February 25, 2011, the day before the Bachelor of Science commencement. Classes will be dismissed between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m. in the Purser Center lobby. ALL students, faculty and staff are invited. At 11:30 a.m., a buffet lunch will be served in the Purser Center lobby for the scholarship recipients and their guests, faculty and staff. All other students will have a free pizza and Ted Drewes® lunch in the Logan cafeteria. (Note: Scholarship recipients taking the NBS Review will be excused during the one late morning session.) LOGAN’S EVIDENCE-BASED JOURNAL CLUB TO MEET FEBRUARY 16 Logan’s Evidence-Based Journal Club has been established to: promote clinical applications of best evidence to improve patient outcomes; learn by doing and assessing the validity and clinical relevance of the research paper; learn to critically evaluate the scientific literature; and discuss the latest scientific literature relevant to your practice. NEXT APPLIED KINESIOLOGY MEETING IS FEBRUARY 15 The Applied Kinesiology Club will meet on Tuesday, February 15 at 11:05 a.m. in room G 40. Dr. Katharine Conable, associate professor in the Logan Chiropractic Science division, will teach the Tuesday meetings of the A.K. club, beginning with the most basic basics of A.K. This week’s topic is the art of muscle testing -muscles of the hip -- reflex corrections. These meetings will afford students an opportunity to practice these and more advanced AK skills with the help of club officers and experienced club members. Learn to evaluate muscle function with scientific precision and to use muscle responses as functional neurological feedback. Gain certainty on your ability to correct postural deviations and to identify subluxations. Learn simple manual methods of optimizing muscle function to prevent injury and help adjustments hold. Through the trimester, videos of Dr. Goodheart telling his stories of the early discoveries in AK and then practicing those techniques will be presented. All trimester students are welcome to these hands-on workshops. No previous experience is required. OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE LOGAN CAMPUS The Logan Pediatrics Club is sponsoring the “Have-a-Heart” Campaign runs through Monday, Feb. 14. For a donation of $1.00, every donor receives a ‘Heart’ with their name on it. The Pediatrics Club will have a table set up in the cafeteria all week during the week of Feb. 7 to sell hearts. Announcements will also be made in the classrooms. Proceeds benefit the Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center in Oklahoma City, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary. Donors can post their hearts in their classrooms or offices to show their commitment to Oklahaven’s cause. Chiropractic students from all North American colleges participate in this campaign. Welcome to Logan’s two newest employees -- Nancy Kyd is a full-time patient service representative at Montgomery Health Center (as Danyell Gilpin has transferred to Bogey Hills Health Center); David Cristancho is the new part-time student computer lab assistant. The Clinic Health Center Lab is currently in need of two students to work as Montgomery Health Center lab techs for the spring 2011 trimester and beyond. The job pays $9 per hour. Students must be Federal Work Study eligible to apply. (Please see the Financial Aid Office to determine your eligibility.) The duties involved include: blood draws, urine tests, and EKGs. Prior medical tech experience is also preferred for these positions. The positions are part-time with varied hours, Monday through Saturday. Ellen demonstrates yoga for beginners and intermediates and poses to challenge those who are ready to take it to the next level. When: Tuesdays (now through April 5); Time: 4:45 – 6 p.m.; Where: Purser Center Lobby; Cost: $30 for all 11 classes. Learn enzyme nutrition in the spring trimester. The postgraduate department is now accepting students entering trimester 6 or above for the Internal Health Specialist (IHS) program, taught by Dr. Howard F. Loomis Jr., DC. This program will provide you with a clinical perspective on digestive health and give you a hands-on means of analyzing your patients’ nutritional status. The use of digestive and therapeutic enzymes in clinical practice will also be discussed. This is an extremely practical, foundational course for any student who is interested in nutrition. Students will purchase class notes, but the tuition is FREE. The IHS program is a six-session course. PLEASE NOTE: Session #1 will be the weekend of March 5-6, 2011.
