Challenge Grant Fund Raising Nears Goal as Deadline Approaches As the Tower was going to press, the December 15 fund-raising deadline of a challenge from the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education was approaching rapidly.

Earlier this fall , Dr. William M .

Harris, President of the Foundation, offered Logan College a $75,000 grant, if the College raised at least the same amount by December 15.

Pending pledges cannot be counted in the donation total.

At publication time, the Logan College Office of Institutional Advancement had received $71,089.

With just a few days remaining to reach the $75,000 goal, Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman said he was guardedly optimistic that the challenge grant goal would be reache d , and possibly exceeded.

If the fund-raising goal is reached , the $75,000 grant and all fun ds raised must be added to Logan's endowment. If the challenge grant ¡ is obta ined , it will have g reat historical significance for t he College: it will be the largest such grant that Logan has obtained in its 58year history.

Dr. Pammer said that the ACA received no surprise s in th e re form bill rece ntly prese nte d by th e Clinton administration. "What we have seen in the reform package is what our le gislative strate gists told us transpire d," said Dr. Pamme r.

Dr. Pamme r said t he ACA has, distribute d a n evaluatio n of the bill to about 46,000 D.C's across the country, and plans to distribute a deta ile d analysis at a later date, as part of the ACA's four-step health ca re re form mobilization ca mpaig n.

Dr. Pamme r noted the historical importa nce of the fact t hat chiropra ctic w as re prese nted in th e process of de ve loping the reform package. He e mphasized th e cruci al ro le of th e rapid e xpa nsio n o f re se a rc h suppo rtin g c hi ropractic care in e nsuring the c redibility of the profession during the p rocess. PAGE4 Pammer. "We have great research data, but we must make certain it gets into the hands of legislators, state governors, managed care CEO's, and insurance adjustors." Dr. Pammer said that the ACA would mail information about the most recent comprehensive study on chiropractic care for low back pain, the Manga report, to all four groups.

Dr. Pammer read brief portions of the Manga report aloud to the assembly. Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health, the Manga report is named for health economist Pran Manga, Ph.D. The Manga report provides extensive documentation of the safety, efficacy, and cost-effectiveness of chiropractic care for low-back pain.

The report states: "On the evidence, particularly the most valid clinical studies, spinal manipulation applied by chiropractors is shown to be more effective than alternative treatments for LBP. The clinical evidence is corroborated by metaanalysis, case-controlled studies, and properly constituted clinical guidelines panels ... Chiropractic care for LBP is safe. Indeed, the literature suggests that it is not only very safe but much safer than medical and other professional management of LBP." Dr. Pammer emphasized the ACA's ongoing commitment to research documenting the efficacy of chiropractic care. "We must continue to provide detailed facts to back up our anecdotal evidence," he said. Dr. Pammer said that in addition to a study on chiropractic care and neck/shoulder disorders, the ACA also is funding studies on dysmenorrhea and colic.

"We are not neglecting the study of organic dysfunctions and their response to chiropractic care," Dr. Pammer explained. He said that the report on the colic study is being prepared for publication, and will show positive results for chiropractic.

six hours per day," said Dr. Pammer.

"Within the group, 100 received medical and chiropractic care, 100 received chiropractic care only, and 100 served as a control group. The group receiving only chiropractic care decreased crying time to 37 minutes per day."

Dr. Pammer concluded by answering questions from students in attendance. When asked about the possibility of renewal of merger efforts between the ACA and the ICA, Dr. Pammer said that such a merger could not be a current priority for the ACA, due to the demands of ensuring chiropractic's position as U.S. health care is reformed.

Asked how students could help in the political battle to come, Dr. Pammer emphasized the basics of grass-roots lobbying: letters and phone calls to legislators, and utilization of influential contacts.

"Patients also must be mobilized, and the ACA does not have the resources to do that," said Dr.

Pammer. "We must depen d on the practicing doctors, and on students, because you have a lot of e nergy we hope!"

Dr. Pammer added that the ACA is lobbying for a dual gatekeeper role for chiropractic physicians. "We are trained to recognize neuromuscu loskeletal disorders that will respond to chiropractic care, and we also are trained to recognize infections and other conditions which should be handled by allopaths."

After his visit to the Logan campus, Dr. Pammer, who holds Diplomate status in the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology, was the keynote speaker at the awards banquet held during the annual conference at the American Chiropractic College of Radiology, held in Chesterfield (see article on page 22).

Dr. Pammer returned to Logan as a SACA Day speaker on Oct. 20. The event was sponsored by the Logan chapter of Student ACA.

Logan Hockey Club Advances to More Competitive League Logan's Hockey Club has joined the Brentwood A League for the '93 season. The league is considered one of the strongest in the St. Louis area.

Logan's 1993-1994, 24-man roster is headed by Captain Ken Szarka, Trimester 7. All of the "Logan Trojans" are enrolled at Logan or in pre-chiropractic studies, with the exception of one player who is the husband of a Logan student.

Each of the Hockey Club's games this year has attracted a large, enthusiastic crowd of Logan students and employees.

Coach Gary Gross, Director of Business Affairs, and Assistant Coach Barry Hentz, Security Supervisor, are helping the players handle the competitiveness of the A League. Logan began its season with a tie game, followed by three losses. On Oct. 18, Logan fans enjoyed seeing their team score four goals against the St. Louis Blues Alumni, a team consisting of former National Hockey League Players. The Blues Alumni won the game 6-4.

The Hockey Club had its first win of the season on Nov. 8, with a 9-8 vi ctory over the "T-Birds" .

Buoye d by this success, the Club eage rly prepared for its Nov. 15 re-match against the St. Louis Blues Alumni. Logan won the game 5-3, becoming the first A League team to defeat the Blues Alumni this season.

At publication, the Hockey Club had added three more wins to its season record, which stood at 5-4-1.

Logan Hosts World Congress of Chiropractic Students

Logan students welcomed students from 20 other chiropractic colleges to the St. Louis area on Oct. 3, for a five-day meeting of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students. The meeting was attended by nearly 100 students from colleges in the U.S., Canada, England, and Australia.

The conference, held at the Adam's Mark Hotel in downtown St. Louis, opened with a welcome by Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman, and an invocation by Dr.

The WCCS was founded at Logan in 1980, and the first meeting of the organization took place that year.

This year's conference was the first hosted by Logan since 1980.

Dr. Ken Yorgan '81 of Racine Wis., was the founder of the WCCS. Dr. Yorgan was the featured speaker at this year's conference banquet, where he discussed his strong feelings about the importance of wees as an opportunity for future leaders of the chiropractic profession to meet one another. He also provided a humorous comparison of the 1980 and 1993 wees conferences, noting the growth of the

Logan student Sandra Bon, Trimester 9, coordinated this year's wees conference and chaired the conference business meetings. Conference attendees maintained a rigorous schedule throughout the week, attending wees business meetings and presentations by distinguished speakers, and enjoying numerous sight-seeing trips and social events.

Dr. Beatrice B. Hagen, who was President of Logan College when the World Congress began, also addressed this year's conference attendees. Dr. Elizabeth Parrott of Mayfield, Ky., a member of the Logan Board of Trustees, spoke at a conference luncheon. On another day, conference attendees enjoyed a luncheon hosted by Dr. Goodman and his wife, Linda Goodman.

Athletes From 10 Colleges Play in Chiropractic Games The always-energetic atmosphere on the Logan camplls became even more dynamic as enthusiastic students from nine other colleges arrived for the second annual Chiropractic Games, a multi-sport compet1t1on for chiropractic students. The '93 Games took place Sept. 29-0ct. 2, on the Logan campus and at local athletic facilities.

Opening ceremonies for the Games were held on the Logan campus on Thursday evening, Sept.

30.

Dean Biernacki and David Shapiro, both Tri 10, led the planning and coordination of the Games.

Biernacki and Shapiro are members of Delta Sigma Chi, national professional chiropractic fraternity. The first Chiropractic Games, held in 1992, were initiated by members of of the Logan chapter of Delta Sigma Chi, and hosted by the College.

Beginning next year, the Games will rotate to other colleges, and will be coordinated by the colleges' Delta Sigma Chi chapters.

More than 400 '93 Games participants competed in six sports : basketball, golf, soccer, softball, flag football, and volleyball. Each college was invited to field up to two teams in each sport.

In addition to Logan College, teams participating in the '93 Games represented: Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (Toronto, Canada); Parker College of Chiropractic (Dallas, Texas); Texas Chiropractic College (Pasadena, Texas); National College of Chiropractic (Lombard, Ill.), Palmer College of Chiropractic (Davenport, la.); Palmer College of Chiropractic West (San Jose, Cal.), Northwestern College of Chiropractic (Bloomington, Minn.); Cleveland Chiropractic College (Los Angeles), and Cleveland Chiropractic College (Kansas City, Mo.) Teams representing Palmer College (Iowa) took first place in softball and basketball, second place

in golf, and third place in volleyball, flag football, and golf. As a result of this strong showing, Palmer won the Delta Sigma Chi Crystal Trophy, the overall Games trophy, with 38 points. (Each first-place team received 10 points, with second and third-place teams receiving six and four points, respectively.)

Logan finished with 30 points, with Logan teams winning gold medals in volleyball and flag football; a silver medal in softball, and the bronze medal in basketball.

Teams representing Parker College and Cleveland College Kansas City took first place in soccer and golf, respectively.

The Games were announced in local sports calendars of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and a feature article with the Games' schedule appeared in the Chesterfield Journal. Prior to the Games, Biernacki ¡ was a guest on KFNS-AM, a St. Louis The ' 93 Chiropractic Games t-shirt sports radio station. American Black Chiropractors Association Meets in St. Louis, Visits Logan Members of the Logan College community helped welcome the national conference of the American Black Chiropractors Association to St. Louis. The ABCA conference took place August 18-22 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in downtown St. Louis.

The ABCA was founded by Bobby Westbrooks, D.C. of St. Louis. Dr. Westbrooks received his degree from Missouri Chiropractic College in 1966, two years after Missouri officially merged with Logan. Dr. Westbrooks served on the planning committee for the 1993 ABCA convention.

Two Logan faculty members presented six-hour continuing education seminars at the conference. Dr. Ronald Grant, Director of Clinical Services, was the instructor of a seminar on risk management, and Dr. Norman Kettner, Radiology Department Chairperson, taught a seminar on the practice guidelines established at the Mercy Conference. Dr. Kettner was a participant in the Mercy Conference.

"We received many very positive comments about the conference," said Dr. Bell. "Everyone seemed to be having an enjoyable time.

"The theme of our conference was ren ewal committing ourselves to providing support for minority students, and providing (continued on page 10)

During the conference, Drs. Bell and Newton were elected as regional directors of the ABCA. They will provide regional leadership in community relations and student support.

Dr. Bell said the conference attendees were favorably impressed

by St. Louis Police Chief Clarence Harmon, who was the keynote speaker at the conference banquet on Saturday evening, August 21.

Chief Harmon discussed the needs of minority youth, and congratulated the ABCA for informing minority youth about career opportunities in chiropractic.

The MC of the conference banquet was Bonita Cornute, a public affairs producer and host for St. Louis' KTVl-TV. Dr. Bell presented a plaque of appreciation to Cornute, in recognition of her service to chiropractic and the ABCA, and her professional and personal commitment to the St. Louis community.

Logan in the News A lengthy article focusing on Logan College appeared in the Oct. 27 issue of the St. Louis PostDispatch. The article extended across the top of the front page of the newspaper's Health Care Opportunities Section, which appears periodically in the Post-Dispatch.

The article included a description of the size and beauty of the Logan campus, information about the College's growing e nrollment and minimum pre-chiropractic requirements, paragraphs on the Logan Health Centers and the length of Logan 's Doctor of Chiropractic program, and details of Logan's outstanding success in the reaccreditation processes the College faced in 1991 and 1992.

ABCA conference attendees toured the Logan campus.

Two years ago, Cornute produced a public affairs show featuring leaders of the 1991 National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME) conference, which was held in St. Louis. Dr. Newton, then

a Logan student, was one of the NAMME convention planners who appeared on the program. Dr. Newton was interviewed and filmed in the Logan clinic, as pa rt of the program produced by Cornute.

Two New Research Studies Underway at Logan A new research study on low back pain is underway at Logan. At least 50 subjects with acute, uncomplicated low back pain will be treated and their progress monitored.

Principal investigators Ralph Filson, D.C. and Ralph Barrale, D.C. are providing all treatments, using a passive extension table developed by retired Logan faculty member Otto Reinert, D.C. Light force, dynamic adjustments are administered to each subject within a twoweek treatment period. Relief of, or e limination of, low back pain will be evaluated.

Gary Sanders, Ph.D., Director of Research, is in charge of the statistical aspects of the project. Dr. Reinert established the protocols for the study. Students Art McAuliffe, Antonio Pafundi, Kirt Speaks, and Dave Sciortino, all Trimester 8, are assisting with the project.

Dr. Filson said that Logan is the

first chiropractic college to research the use of Dr. Reinert's adjusting table.

A $70,000 grant from the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research of Cumberland, Wis., is funding a second study which began recently at Logan. The project has a 14-month schedule, and will evaluate the relief of dysmenorrhea in 35 subjects. The subjects will recei ve treatments utilizing the Toftness method of chiropractic adjusting.

Principal investigators for the study are E.H. Hawkinson, D.C., Brian Snyder, D.C., a nd Gary Sande rs , Ph.D., all Logan faculty me mbe rs. Dr. Hawkinson noted that the receipt of the dysmenorrhea study grant brought the total amount of research funding received by Logan from the FACR to more than $250,000.

Logan Students Establish New Sorority Logan College students have established the first chapter of a chiropractic sorority, Alpha Sigma Nu. The sorority was founded with the goal of becoming a national organization, said Logan Alpha Sigma Nu President Anna Olivetti, Trimester 4. In October, the sorority's officers were notified that a second chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu is being established at Life Chiropractic CollegeWest in San Lorenzo, Cal. Olivetti said the sorority's primary purposes are "to love and serve as many people as possible through chiropractic". The organizational philosophy of the group is based on the Rhinocerous Success series of books by Scott Alexander. The books focus on how to activate intrinsic motivation toward personal growth, in order to realize one's full potential for success.

Olivetti said that the sorority hopes to provide a variety of educational and personal development opportunities for its members, and for the Logan community.

Alpha Sigma Nu already has begun the first of its programs:

aerobics classes offered four times each week on the Logan campus.

The sorority has committed a percentage of proceeds from the classes to Logan College. Initially, members hope to help purchase additional equipment for the Logan Work-Out Center, which opened in July, and to bring guest speakers to campus.

Also serving as officers of Alpha Sigma Nu are: Rebecca Newhouse - Vice President; Laurie Patterson - Secretary, and Michele Messler - Treasurer. All of the women are in Trimester 4.

Alpha Sigma Nu currently has 10 members, said Olivetti. The sorority's adviser is Dr. Kelly Brinkman, Logan Health Center Instructor. Dr. Brinkman has been named an alumna member.

The other sorority and fraternity chapters at Logan continue to thrive. They are: Omega Sigma Phi - national professional chiropractic sorority, and three national professional chiropractic fraternities: Chi Rho Sigma, which is coeducational; Delta Sigma Chi, and Pi Kappa Chi.

Program Highlights Personal Safety Linda Davis, a public affairs officer with the St. Louis Police Department, visited the Logan campus on November 18, and spoke on personal safety.

Davis' presentation was held in the campus gymnasium, and was attended by Logan stud ents, faculty, and staff membe rs. The presentation was repeated in a classroom later in the day, for the benefit of those who could not attend the earlier session .

A dynamic speaker, Davis is a veteran police officer who also has resided in high-cri me neighborhoods. Stressing the importance of being on gu ard, even in quiet suburbs like Chesterfield, Davis urged those prese nt to use particular caution when visiting areas where crime is more frequent.

Davis discussed how to avoid becoming a target for robbery or assault. She outlined real-life situations which could have ended tragically, in which quick thinking helped people avoid being victimized.

Davis emphasized the importance of being aware of one's surroundings at all times. She added that one should never risk being hurt or killed in an attempt to protect money or property during a mugging, or any other robbery. Davis concluded her presentation by demonstrating basic seifdefense procedures that can help fend off would-be assailants.

Articles by Logan Student Accepted for Publication in JMPT Logan student Marc Gottlieb, Trimester 9, has written two articles which will appear in the journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, a refereed (peer-re-

viewed) journal.

Gottlieb's first article, "Treatment of Neglected Brain Stem and Musculoskeletal Injuries Stemming from Birth Trauma", is a literature review.

In the article, Gottlieb provides 67 references on the article's topic.

Gottlieb began work on the study as a Trimester 4 student at Logan, with hopes of publishing the article.

He also has used some of the research he has done for Logan class assignments.

Scholarship for Massage Therapists Established at Logan D. Allen Chamberlain, D.C., a 1969 graduate from Knoxville, Tenn., has established a $500 nonrenewable scholarship, to be awarded once a year to an incoming Logan student.

TheDr. and Mrs. H. David Chamberlain Scholarship for Massage Therapists is named for Dr. Cham-

berlain's parents, who also reside in Knoxville. Dr. Chamberlain said that his father, a 1949 Logan graduate, taught at Logan and served as clinic director for several years, before

establishing a practice in Knoxville.

The elder Dr. Chamberlain now practices on a part time basis.

The Chamberlain scholarship recipient must be a certified massage therapist. Each year's award will be offered to a student who has been admitted to Logan, prior to his or her matriculation. Dr. Chamberlain said he established these parameters to aid the Logan admissions office in attracting prospective chiropractic students working in the field of massage therapy.

Robyn Wilkerson, D.C., Director of Admissions, said that each applicant for the Chamberlain scholarship will be required to: • submit a federal financial aid application form to Logan ; • write a 500- to 1,000-word essay on how chiropractic physicians and massage therapists can work together to promote better health care.

Dr. Wilkerson added that the first award will be made by April 1, 1994.

Carolyn Moeller Essington, D.C. '91 on the death of her husband, Jay Essington, D.C., also a 1991 graduate. Dr. Essington was diagnosed with cancer not long before he passed away in October. The couple had recently moved to Ocean Gate, N.J., to operate a practice in nearby Beachwood. Dr. Carolyn and their two sons, ages six months and two years, remain in Ocean Gate.

Newspapers Feature Logan Alumni Several Logan alumni have been profiled in articles in local newspapers in their respective areas in recent months.

Anthony Calandro, D.C. '81, Carmelo Calandro, D.C. '85, and Christopher Calandro, D.C. '91, were featured in the Spring 1993 issue of the Crestwood-Sunset Hills Area News, a St. Louis-area newspaper.

The article noted the Calandra brothers' hard work and success.

The brothers, all of whom practice in South St. Louis County, were cited as "an excellent example of what a family, through hard work, love, togetherness and determination can accomplish."

Debra Owens, D.C. '91 was profiled an article in the Puxico (Mo.) Press. The article, which appeared August 25, was written by Press reporter Elfreda Cox, and described Cox's experience as Dr. Owens' patient.

Dr. Owens had been providing chiropractic care to Cox for whiplash and a dislocated rib resulting

from a major auto accident. Cox also experienced significant swelling and loss of sensation in an inj ured leg, which a medical docto r told her would probably require a year to heal. Dr. Owens, who has completed a postdoctoral cou rse in acupuncture, suggested the use of acupuncture to address Cox's leg injury, and the reporter agreed to undergo treatment.

In the newspaper article, Cox discussed the success of the acupuncture treatments she received.

Delaine Hayes, D.C. '86 and Bill Hayes, D.C. '89 of Waupaca, Wis. , were featured in the Sept. 2 issue of the Waupaca County Post. The article announced the do ctors' move to a new, larger facili ty in Waupaca, which provides enough space for them to practice together for the first time.

The lengthy article also listed the treatments provided by the Doctors Hayes, and describes their co mmunity involvement and positive feelings about Waupaca.

NCCA Names Award for Dr. Kemp The North Carolina Chiropractic Association has established an award in memory of the late Ramey Kemp, D.C., a 1950 Logan graduate who died last June. The Association will present the award annually to a member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the chiropractic profession.

Dr. Kemp, who practiced in Mocksville, N.C., was the first chiropractic physician to serve in the General Assembly of North Carolina. Dr. Kemp served as Chairman of the Democratic Party in Davie County, N.C., and devoted much of his time to communicating with state and federal legislators about the status of chiropractic in North Carolina.

Dr. Goodman Attends Health Care Reform and State Meetings As the national debate on health care reform began in earnest in October, the chiropractic profession continued its input to the process.

The Coalition for Health Care Reform, which includes representatives of chiropractic educational institutions and other members of the chiropractic profession, met in Washington D.C. Logan was represented by Dr. George A. Goodman, President of the College.

Late r in the month, Dr. Goodman shared his up-to-date information on health care reform as keynote speaker at the Maine Chiropractic Association banquet, which was

held in Portland.

Dr. Goodman also represented Logan College at the meeting in Davenport, la. this fall , of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges. In addition, he has spoken before several groups of Logan alumni at state association conventions in Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.

During the North Carolina Chiropractic Association convention, Dr. Goodman was prese nt at a banquet honoring the late Dr. Ramey Kemp and Dr. Faye Eagles, both Logan alumni (see Alumni Notes, p. 15).

Dr. Goodman also accepted addi -

tional money from Dr. Eagles for a scholarship for North Carol ina students. Dr. Eagles established the scholarship fund last year, in the name of former Logan President Dr. Beatrice B. Hagen.

On Nov. 4, Dr. Goodman addressed a St. Louis County business group, the West County Chamber of Commerce, discussing chiropractic in general, the education of ch iropractors, rece nt research on chiropractic, and th e profession's role in the national health care reform process.

STUDENT PROFILE:

Retired Executive Prepares to Enter Chiropractic " I often forget my years, since I spend so much time around other students," says Trimester 8 Logan student Dick Davis, 65. He adds, laughing, "It's hard for me to believe I'm going to sign up for Medicare this afternoon. When I' m in practice, I'll be seeing Medicare from both sides."

Davis previously worked for the Monsanto Company, a St. Louisbased manufacturer of chemical products. Educated as a chemical engineer at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the New York City native moved to St. Louis to work for Monsanto in 1951. He spent most of his 34 years with the company working in new business development and marketing, spearheading new, specialty product operations of Monsanto.

After retiring from Monsanto in 1985, Davis formed his own company, Creative Marketing Associates. As a consultant to companies throughout the U.S., he shared his expertise in developing and marketing new chemical and industrial products.

Although he enjoyed consulting, Davis began to experience renewed interest in the healing arts, which had intrigued him while he was growing up.

Davis had become a patient of Logan faculty member Bert Hanicke, D.C. in 1975. " I suffered from low back pain for many years," says Davis. "I was amazed that with one adjustment, Dr . Hanicke could relieve all of the pain ."

Davis also became fascinated by the traditional practices of Lakota healers. The Lakota people are Native Americans whose traditional homeland is the upper Great Plains, and Davis has studied their history, culture, and spirituality extensively.

Davis says he viewed chiropractic as a health care discipline which would satisfy his pragmatic, scientific character, while also affirming his respect for natural healing

processes that have not been fully explained by science.

So Davis began the process of applying to Logan . Although his undergraduate curriculum provided the biology, chemistry, and physics prerequisites for admission , he needed to complete additional courses in social sciences and humanities.

"Becoming a student again after 40 years away from the classroom was scary," says Davis. "However, I'm glad I did it. Logan is a good school, and attending Logan allowed me to remain in St. Louis. I have a feeling of renewed purpose in life, and I've enjoyed the academic challenges."

Davis says his background in engineering gave him a mental framework which has helped him develop a doctor's understanding of how the body works. "Engineering is similar to physiology, in that t.he body has its own ' pipes,' electrical currents, and control systems," he says. (continued on page 19)

Second Veterans' Stand-Down a Success Kathleen Naughton, D.C., Assistant Director of Clinical Assessment and Clinical Education, served for the second time as coordinator of all health services of the SL Louis Stand Down Project, held Oct. 2 at St. Patrick's Center in St. Louis.

Stand Down is a military term indicating an opportunity for soldiers to leave the field of combat and rest in a secure area. The day- long event for St. Louis-area homeless U.S. military veterans, originated last year under the direction of the St. Louis Area Stand Down Committee, which includes more than 35 government agencies and organizations serving veterans and the homeless.

This year's Stand-Down, like last year's, offered chiropractic, medical, dental, podiatric, and nursing services, as well as legal and employment assistance, psychological

counseling services, meals, and clothing.

Dr. Naughton said that about 200 homeless veterans attended the event. "One hundred of the veterans came to the medical services tent, and we saw about 80 of them in the chiropractic section," said Dr. Naughton. Seventeen Logan students, many of whom are members of the Logan Veterans Club, provided health care services. Some of the students provided chiropractic care, while others worked in the history-intake and triage areas.

Dr. Naughton said the triage service was helpful in bringing many of the veterans to the chiropractic section. "The veterans were asked, while going through triage, if they had musculoskeletal complaints," she explained.

"Overall, the program was very

successful this year, wi t h many improvements," said Dr. Na ughto n.

"This year's clothing tent p rovided clothes laid out by size, and eac h veteran received a hygi ene kit, donated by McDonnell-Doug las. " We worked out several im provements in the medical services area .

For example, we had field hos p ital equipment on-site, inclu di ng hydraulic chairs for the dentists, and podiatric equipment. The ch irop ractic section was located in a private area this year.

"Representatives of the city and county governments, a nd o t he r dignitaries were in attend ance. We received a lot of good fe ed back , and the veterans and man y of t he volunteers seemed very pos itive about the fact that the chiropractic profession was represented."

Florida, have responded very positively to my enrollment at Logan ," says Davis. Tony, 29, shares his father's desire to be a health professional. A recent graduate of

Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri, Tony is now completing an internship. Davi s' son Mike, 32, researches computer systems related to medical claims.

After enrolling at Logan, Davis spent two years working as a student assistant at Dr. Hanicke's office, where he learned about the day-to-day operation of a chiropractic practice . He plans to open his own practice after graduating next August.

Davis would like to utilize Applied Kinesiology in his practice, and he plans to pursue postgraduate study in acupuncture.

"I ' d like to practice in the South St. Louis area," he says, "hopefully until I'm in my BO's. I've made a point of visiting a number of doctors in their 70's and BO's who are still practicing, and they seem to be doing great."

Wherever he is next fall , there is no question that Davis will be learning and thriving on the challenges of his work.

"I'm really enjoying the opportunity to apply what I've learned in classes in the outpatient clinic this trimester," Davis adds. In addition, he is busily engaged in the initial stage of his senior research project.

He will study the influence of patient attitudes on how quickly patients respond to chiropractic care, with tension headaches as the diagnostic parameter for the study.

Davis also has been involved in campus activities since he enrolled at Logan. He served as President of his class for five trimesters, and he continues to be active on campus.

He has enjoyed getting to know his classmates, who he says support each other in many ways.

Davis also receives strong family support as a Logan student. He recently married Susan Harman Davis, an occupational therapist.

They live in a 100-year-old house in Webster Groves, a St. Louis suburb.

Davis has two sons from a prior marriage.

"My sons, both of whom live in

Activities Benefit Christmas Gift for Homeless Program Logan's annual Christmas Gift for the Homeless Program has provided Christmas gift packages of warm clothing for hundreds of homeless individuals in the St. Louis area since the program began in 1990. In past years, students, faculty, and staff members of the College have raised funds for the effort through bowla-thons, restaurant sponsored dinners, and bake sales.

This year's fund-raising for the Christmas gift program is off to a strong start. A bake sale and a bench press contest were held on the Logan campus on Nov. 11.

Logan faculty member Kathleen Naughton, D.C., who coordinates the Christmas gift program, said the activities generated a total of $3,000.

Additional fund-raising will take place in December, with funding also anticipated from individual contributors, organizations, and companies.

Dr. Filson Helps Lead ACA Council Meeting Ralph Filson, D.C., Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science at Logan, attended meetings of the ACA Council on Technic, and of the Panel of Advisers of the Intercollegiate Conference on Technic. The meetings were held Sept. 9-Sept. 12, at the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic.

Dr. Filson, who is Vice President of the Council on Technic, worked closely with other officers of the Council in leading the group's meeting. Dr. Filson also coordinated the meeting of the intercollegiate Panel of Advisers.

Attendees at the Council meeting heard an overview of the ACA's 1993 convention, held last summer in Hawaii. During the convention, the Council's evaluations of eight

specific adjustive techniques were presented to the ACA Board of Governors. The techniques included two which are taught at Logan: the Logan Basic System of Body Mechanics, and Reinert Specific (a Diversified procedure).

Dr. Filson said that the ACA Board of Governors announced that the evaluations will be distributed within the profession at a later date.

The Council on Technic also discussed a membership drive, and organizations which have expressed interest in sponsoring evaluations of chiropractic techniques.

The technique evaluations provided by the Council are conducted by the Panel of Advisers of the Intercollegiate Conference on Technic. The Panel of Advisers includes

educators, researchers, and private chiropractic practitioners. Twelve chiropractic colleges were represented at the 1993 Panel of Advisers meeting. Anthony Rosner, Ph.D. represented the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research.

The Panel of Advisers meeting included presentations by individuals proposing evaluations of several techniques; collegiate presentations on problem-based learning in chiropractic college curricula; an overview of legal considerations related to the use of adjustive techniques, and a report on the scoliosis study currently underway at Life Chiropractic College-West.

Joseph Kinsella, D.C., Director of the Logan College clinic at the Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in Downtown St. Louis, received an outstanding service award from the Salvation Army.

The award was presented Oct. 9, during a dinner celebrating the SOth anniversary of the Harbor Light Center. The celebration was held at the Salvation Army Railton Residence Center in St. Louis.

Dr. Kinsella has served as Director of the Logan clinic at Harbor Light since 1990. Logan has provided health care services at Harbor Light since 1988.

• Three Logan faculty members coauthored a case report which appeared in the 2nd Quarter, 1993 issue of the refereed journal Diagnostic Radiology and Advanced Imaging. The article, "Sternoclavicular Osteoarthrosis Simulating an Apical Lung Lesion", was written by Michael Barry, D.C., DACBR, Radiology Resident; D. Robert Kuhn, D.C., DACBR, Instructor of Chiropractic and Clinical Sciences, and

Norman Kettner, D.C., DACBR, Chairperson of the Logan Radiology Department.

Dr. Kettner and Radiology Resident Inger Roug, D.C, attended the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, held Nov. 27-Dec. 3 in Chicago. They attended numerous sessions addressing magnetic resonance imaging and evaluation of the neuromusculoskeletal system. Evolving technologies highlighted during the multi-disciplinary conference included the evaluation of sensory and motor activation within the brain, imaged by MRI.

Doris Bell, D.C., Director of Multi-Cultural Affairs, attended the annual meeting of the National Association of Medical Minority Educators, held in September in Nashville. During the meeting, Dr. Bell participated in a training and leadership conference and workshops on increasing minority enrollment and on empowering minority ~uden~inacademiG.

The NAMME meeting featured a recruitment fair, which was attended by about 500 college students interested in health care careers. Special events for elementary and high school students also were offered .

Four Logan alumni recently joined the College faculty. They are: Jason Blumenfeld, D.C. '92; William Madosky, D.C. '87; Denise Primavera, D.C. '93, and Lois Ann Ladd, D.C. '88.

Dr. Blumenfeld is teaching in the Trimester 1 Chiropractic Science Division curriculum. Drs. Madosky and Primavera also teach in the Chiropractic Science Division, w ith Dr. Madosky assigned to the Tri 6 curriculum and Dr. Primavera teaching physical and rehabi litation therapy to Tri 7 and 9 students. Dr. Ladd is teaching pediatrics in the Clinical Science Division.

Dr. Kettner Hosts Radiology Conf ere nee "Images for the '90's", the 1993 conference of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology, was held Oct. 6-9 at the Doubletree Hotel in Chesterfield. Norman W. Kettner, D.C., DACBR, Chairperson of the Logan Radiology Department, hosted the symposium. Dr. Kettner hosted the ACCR conference in 1990, and volunteered to do so again this year. He also has served as President of the College of Radiology since 1991.

Logan President George A. Goodman D.C., F.l.C.C. welcomed the 1993 ACCR conference attendees to St. Louis.

This year's College of Radiology conference faculty included a number of internationally recognized chiropractic and medical experts in skeletal radiology and magnetic resonance imaging. Serving on the faculty were Gary D. Schultz, D.C., DACBR, Associate Professor of Radiology at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, and Terry Yochum, D.C., DACBR, Director of the Rocky Mountain Chiropractic Radiologic Center and instructor of skeletal radiology at the University of Colorado Health Science Center.

FYI: NCMIC Releases Malpractice Insurance Survey Results A survey conducted for the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company has shown that many D.C.s are unsure about the difference between two common types of malpractice insurance.

The West Des Moines, Iowa-based insurer distributed the results of its survey of almost 600 doctors' knowledge of chiropractic malpractice insurance in August. The random survey of D.C.s throughout the country was conducted for NCMIC by a New York-based opinion research firm, Rowan & Michaels.

Most of the doctors surveyed carried either occurrence or claims-

made insurance. However, 34 percent of those owning insurance policies were uncertain about the type of coverage they had purchased, and 48 percent of the doctors surveyed were unable to distinguish between the two standard types of policies. One th ird of the policy-holders incorrectly believed claims-made policies that they had purchased provided occurrence coverage.

NCMIC's survey summary stated that occurrence coverage provides comprehensive, long-term protection. An occurrence policy protects the policy-holder for alleged negli-

gent treatment covered by the policy. Coverage of services rendered during the policy term continues after termination of the policy, or retirement of the doctor.

A claims-made policy covers malpractice claims made and reported during the term of the policy. If the policy is cancelled, "tail coverage" can be purchased to protect against claims filed after the termination of the policy, for occurrences during the policy period . The survey overview distributed by NCMIC noted, however, that tail coverage may be costly.

Car Buff Bob Brueggemann Completes Masterful Restoration Logan Physical Plant Director Bob Brueggemann has loved cars since he competed in soap box derbies as a young boy. His automotive enthusiasm has never wavered, even during the eight years he spent restoring an antique car.

The car, which is Chevrolet's "The Master" model, was made in a Kansas City, Mo. plant in 1934.

Brueggemann says the model was the first to feature "knee action" suspension, which allowed for a much smoother ride than was typical of cars in The Master's price range.

Brueggemann's car had only two owners during its first 35 years.

When he purchased the car 12 years ago, it was drivable, but in need of work.

Brueggemann stripped, sanded, and repainted the car's chassis and body, using two coats of enamel. He replaced all of the mechanical parts, rebuilding the car's internal system into a replica of the original model.

He traveled locally and out of town to numerous automotive swap meets, in search of the parts he needed to complete the job.

In 1992, Brueggemann began entering the Chevrolet in St. Louisarea antique car shows. The car has taken the "Best of Show" title at seven shows, including the 1992 "Easter Concours d' Elegance" , sponsored by the AAA Club and the Horseless Carriage Club of St. Louis.

This event, Brue gge mann e xplains, has more than 400 entries and is held in Forest Park in St. Louis each year on Easter Sunday. It is the largest St. Louis-area car show.

Brueggemann's car also has taken "1st in Class" honors at several shows not offe ring Best of Show titles.

The exterior of the car is Arcadian Green, a rich shade of dark green which contrasts with the cream spoke wheels and black fenders.

Inside the car, mohair-covered upholstery duplicates The Master's original interior. The car's original rear-window shade, still in excellent condition, is mounted inside the rear window.

Brueggemann says he owes much of his success with the car to his patient wife, Gloria, who is the Logan Alumni Association office secretary.

"Besides having put up with my hobby for years, Gloria has joined several antique car organizations with me, " says Brueggemann.

"We're members of the Horseless Carriage Club of Missouri, of which I'm the treasurer; the Vintage Chevrolet Club of Missouri and the Inte rnational Vintag e Ch e vrolet Club of California.

"An especially memorable car show is sponsored by the Show MeCorvair Club of Missouri, and held at the Museum of Transport. In

1992, Gloria and I won first place in the costume contest at this show, and the car won first place in its class. We wore 1934 vintage clothing. Gloria researched and put together our outfits, using clothes we bought at a vintage clothing store in Keokuk, la.

"The 'Jazz A Matazz' car show and jazz concert, held at Westport Plaza last summer, also was a lot of fun . The show, which raises funds for the Unite d Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater St. Louis, took place the same day as Logan's graduation, also held at Westport.

We enjoyed having Logan students, faculty, and staff membe rs stop by to e njoy the event with us."

Brueggemann says the car has become a family keepsake, and he intends to continue entering it in car shows. He adds, "The best part of having the car, though, is the excitement of driving it."

Ergonomics Center Tests Fire Fighters Dr. Patrick Venditti, Director of the Logan Ergonomics Center, recently developed and directed a second testing program for the Mehlville Fire District in St. Louis County.

Twenty-four newly hired fire fighters visited the Logan campus, where they underwent a series of 14 tests. Abilities such as moving through a confined crawl space, walking a balance beam, climbing a SO-foot ladder, and carrying heavy equipment were tested. The fire fighters also underwent tests of their ability to identify various smells, and of their tactile sensitivity.

The tests, known as post-offer functional capacity testing, comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Under this law, employers can test employees only after a

Trustees' Long Range Planning Committee Meets The Long Range Planning Committee of the Logan Board of Trustees met in mid-September. The committee is in the early stages of developing a five to 10-year strategic plan for the College. Howard Chapel, D.C., Chairperson of the committee, said that the plan under development will guide Logan in providing quality education into the next century.

An educational consultant from Kentucky, who has considerable expertise in planning for higher education, met with the committee members at the September meeting.

In addition to Dr. Chapel and Virginia Brown, Ph.D., committee vice chairperson, eight other members of the Board of Trustees serve on the committee.

Colleagues of the College Program is Revamped Logan 's Colleagues of the College program, which has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception in 1991 , is changing to a new format. The Colleagues program has recognized individuals who have referred prospective chiropractic students to the Logan Admissions Office. The Colleagues have been listed in the Tower, and have received certificates and other appreciation gifts.

Robyn Wilkerson, D.C., Director of Admissions, explained the change: "We were thrilled with the response to the Colleagues program after it was established," said Dr. Wilkerson . "Many prospective students have been referred to us by Colleagues of the College. Due to the rapidly expanding size of the Colleagues roster, however, we feel the program will be much more manageable if we adopt a more streamlined format.

"The forms of recognition Colleagues have received will continue. However, designation as a Colleague will occur when the prospective student applies for admission to Logan, rather than when the initial referral is made.

Ors. Goodman and Parry Update Logan Community on Health Care Reform Dr. George A. Goodman, Logan President, and Dr. Allen Parry, Dean of Postdoctoral and Related Professional Education, spoke at an allCollege assembly on Nov. 23, outlining in dynamic fashion the challenges and the opportunities facing chiropractic as U.S. health care is reformed.

Dr. Goodman characterized health care reform as an unprecedented opportunity for U.S. chiropractors, saying, "We will have an opportunity to adjust the spines of 280 million Americans. Last year, we treated 21 million patients in the United States."

However, Dr. Goodman made it clear that such opportunities will not come without cooperative effort within the profession, an effort which he said must transcend philosophical differences.

"If we expect to have fair and equal access to the health care system, tremendous effort must come from each practicing doctor, and each student and faculty member enrolled at every chiropractic college," said Dr. Goodman. "Patients of all DCs will have to participate in grass roots efforts as well."

Attendees at the assembly viewed three 30-second commercial spots produced by the ACA, which Dr. Goodman said would begin airing on television soon. The spots highlight chiropractic's effectiveness in getting injured workers back to work, providing safe and natural health care, and helping patients avoid unnecessary surgeries.

Dr. Goodman acknowledged that the strong statements of these commercials will help ensure that the chiropractic point of view is heard by the public as health care reform is debated. However, he cautioned: "Health care reform will be one of the most debated issues

in our history, with long-term controversy and ugly dialogue."

Dr. Goodman noted that a commercial opposing the inclusion of practitioners of non-traditional disciplines in national health care already has aired in some areas of the country. He also discussed information that he and Dr. Parry received at the ACA's National Mobilization Conference, held in November in Dallas.

"Frank Lunz, who is a top-ranked pollster, told us that if U.S. legislators took a vote today on chiropractic inclusion in national health care, the result would be in doubt," said Dr. Goodman.

Dr. Goodman added that while pollsters seem certain that the Clinton administration's plan will not be passed in Congress next year, the inevitability of health care reform is not in doubt. Dr. Goodman anticipates many visits to the Logan campus by legislators in coming months. In addition to participating in letter-writing campaigns, Logan students will be asked to invite clinic patients to sign release forms to have their names and addresses added to a national data base of chiropractic patients.

The data base will be used to facilitate grass roots lobbying.

"We have a big educational job ahead of us," said Dr. Goodman .

"Legislators must be bombarded with messages from us, and from our patients. No fairy godmother is going to bring chiropractic into national health care. It will depend on you and me."

Dr. Parry Reviews The Manga Report Dr. Parry discussed the Manga report, a recently published Ontario Ministry of Health study. The report is named for its principal author,

health economist Pran Manga, Ph.D. The study is expected to be an invaluable aid as the chiro practic profession struggles for access to the U.S. health care system. The Manga report provides comprehensive documentation of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of chiropractic care for low back pain.

The credentials of the Manga report authors are extremely strong, noted Dr. Parry, adding that the authors' primary goal was to identify potential cost-savings for the financially struggling Canadian health care system.

"The authors are not advocates of chiropractic," observed Dr. Parry, adding, "The Manga report also acknowledges the docume nted effectiveness of chiropractic for conditions other than low back pain."

Dr. Parry explained that the report focuses on LBP because of its tremendous economic impact, while recommending full integration of chiropractic into the Canadian health care system, and the extension of hospital privileges to all chiropractors.

Reviewing Manga report materials distributed to attendees at the assembly, Dr. Parry quoted the report's statement regarding medical management of LBP: " ... several existing medical therapies are generally contraindicated on the basis of existing clinical trials."

Emphasizing the importance of meeting with legislators to ensure their awareness of the Manga report, Dr. Parry praised the work of five Logan students who attended a recent national Student ACA meeting in Washington D.C. The students - Jim Warnick and Sandra Bon, Trimester 9; Kirt Speaks, Tri 8; Duane Snider and Mark Stine, Tri 3 - completed numerous visits to legislators and legislative aids during three days in Washington .
