FACR Funding Major Research Studies at Logan The Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research (FACR) is funding research studies of the effectiveness of the Toftness system of chiropractic adjusting, developed by the late Dr. l.N. Toftness of Cumberland, Wis. Two major research grants for such study have been awarded to Logan College.

Dr. l.N. Toftness, who passed away in September, 1990, was the founder and served as treasurer of the FACR, and developed a system of patient care which utilizes sustained lowforce adjustments. A Palmer graduate who also studied with Logan College founder Dr. H.B. Logan, Dr. Toftness maintained a close relationship with Logan College.

mented, "About five years ago, the FACR decided to fund controlled studies to substantiate the results of chiropractic adjustments, which we have observed empirically for many years. Logan College has been very gracious in helping us with this endeavor, and we appreciate the hard work of the College's Research Division."

Last winter, a research study funded by a $62,000 grant from the FACR was begun at Logan. The study's purpose was to demonstrate and describe the clinical and therapeutic benefits of the Toftness system of chiropractic adjustment, for the relief of pain among patients with acute neuromusculoskeletal pain. Elmer Hawkinson, D.C. and Brian Snyder, D.C. of the Logan faculty conducted the study. The study has been completed, and its results have been submitted to the Journal of Chiropractic Technique.

The study's results demonstrated significantly greater reduction of pain in subjects with acute neuromusculoskeletal pain, who received adjustments using the Toftness system, than in control group subjects. The control group subjects received only placebo, or "sham" adjustments.

This fall, the awarding of a $61,000 grant from the FACR was announced by Dr. Beatrice Hagen, President of Logan College. This grant is helping to support a study entitled: "Evaluation of the Toftness System of Chiropractic Adjusting for Patients with Chronic Pain: Clinical and Immunological Assessment."

The 12-month study will collect and analyze the clinical outcomes of patients who have received chiropractic care, utilizing the Toftness system. Drs. Hawkinson and Snyder are the principal investigators for the project.

The two grants recently awarded to Logan are the largest grants ever awarded by the FACR, and these are the first FACR grants intended to fund research studies to be submitted to scientific journals for publication. The results of research conducted with FACR funding prior to 1990 were distributed only to members of the Foundation. The FACR was instituted in 1954 for the purpose of funding research on the Toftness system of patient care, and general research on chiropractic.

Presently, there are no FACRfunded studies underway at other institutions. Other chiropractic colleges have approached the FACR for funding, and their proposals will be considered.

Following the awarding of Logan's most recent FACR grant, Dr. Hagen commented: "We were so grateful to Dr. l.N., and continue to feel gratitude toward Dr. David Toftness and the other FACR officers, for their generosity and dedication to furthering scientific research within our profession. Logan Hosts National Conf ere nee of Minority Health Profession Educators Logan College was one of three St. Louis-area health profession educational institutions to host the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME) 1991 Convention, held September 13-18 in St. Louis. The other local host institutions were the Washington University School of Medicine, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis School of Optometry. Eleven other health profession institutions from throughout the U.S. also ~erved as hosts. ¡ NAMME was established in 1975 by a group of educators who were concerned about the shortage of minority health care providers.

NAMME promotes the admission and retention of minority students to health profession schools; the recruitment and development of minority faculty, administrators, and managerial personnel within health profession education; the delivery of quality health care to minority populations, and the recruitment and development of undergraduate pre-health profession minority students.

Administrators and educators from health profession educational institutions throughout the U.S., and pre-health profession advisers from undergraduate colleges and universities are members of NAMME. Logan was the first chiropractic college to join NAMME. Two other

Another nephew, Dr. Arden Fenander '59 of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., a current Logan College trustee, serves as treasurer of the FACR.

chiropractic colleges, Northwestern and Palmer, sent representatives to the conference, and subsequently joined NAMME. Logan is represented within NAMME by Dion Newton, a Trimester 7 student who works as a parttime admissions coordinator. Under the supervision of Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, Director of Admissions, Newton has expanded Logan's minority recruitment program through membership in national health profession educational organizations dedicated to minority concerns. He also has visited most of the nation's historically black colleges and universities. Newton was a member of the 1991 NAMME Conference Planning Team.

such topics as cultural barriers to education, 21st-century demographics and their implications for health profession education, and the preparation of minority students for health profession education.

Dr. Donald Christy, Dean of Admissions and Student Services, was a panelist during a seminar entitled: "The Health Professions Dilemma: Admissions through Certification." Dr. Christy emphasized Logan's commitment to increasing the percentage of minority enrollment at the College above the current level of 2%. He also provided an overview of the academic requirements for enrollment in colleges accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education. Dr. Christy encouraged the pre-health

THE TOWER/FALL 1991 profession advisers present to discuss chiropractic with their advisees: "Please keep in mind that we provide a viable opportunity for students to enter the health professions," he said.

The conference also included a health careers fair for high school students, which was coordinated by Newton. This program was designed to stimulate students' interest with interactive exhibits and displays.

During this program, Logan students Charles Quigless, Yvonne O'Neal (both Trimester 1), John Thomas, Paulette Higgins, and Juels Delaney (all Trimester 7), Roland Brim (Trimester 10), and Sheila Taylor (Trimester 3) talked with local high school students, and demo"strated the use of the College's Spinal Analysis Machine (SAM). Dr. Bill Humphrey '85, and Dr. Doris Bell, Director of Student Health Services, also helped by representing Logan during this program.

A kindergarten-through-12th grade health careers educational program also was provided. This program included drawing contests for students in the primary grades, and essay contests for older students. The essays and drawings focused on the work of health professionals. The winning essay at the high school level was written about chiropractic.

Other conference activities included a college recruitment fair for local college students, during which

Newton also led a meeting scheduled for the chiropractic college representatives in attendance at the conference. This meeting enabled the representatives of the three chiropractic colleges to exchange ideas on how the colleges can work effectively with NAMME, and attract larger numbers of minority students.

Logan also hosted a cocktail rec~ption and cabaret for the convention participants. The cabaret featured the Lincoln High School Jazz Band of East St. Louis, and was held at the St. Louis Lawyers Club in downtown St. Louis. NAMME conference participants at the cabaret were welcomed by Newton and by Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen.

Dr. Hagen provided the guests with a brief overview of Logan's history, and added, "We are very happy to have developed a relationship with NAMME, and we look forward to working with you in the future."

Dr. Wilkerson, Dr. Bell, Dr. George Goodman, Vice President for Chiropractic Affairs, Mrs. Linda Goodman, and Drs. Norman Kettner and Christine Moore of the Logan faculty also attended the reception and cabaret.

Dr. Hagen also spoke at the conference's closing awards luncheon, offering remarks prior to the award presentations. Dr. Hagen spoke to those in attendance of the excellent career opportunities in

chiropractic: "We offer the opportunity to help the body heal itself in a naturill way. There is a great future in chiropractic for young men and women."

Local efforts to publicize the NAMME conference resulted in Newton's participation in several radio and television public affairs programs, during which he discussed NAMME and the conference. Representatives of the University of Missouri-St. Louis School of Optometry and the Washington University School of Medicine also participated in these programs.

"Turnabout," a popular public affairs show on KTVl-TV in St. Louis, focused an entire program on NAMME, its conference and activities, and local NAMME leaders.

Newton was interviewed by Bonita Cornute, the host of the show, who also visited the Logan campus and filmed Newton examining a patient in the Student Health Center. Dr. Michael Taylor, Health Center Instructor, also appeared in the segment, as Newton's supervising clinician. The show aired on Dec. 1.

The College's efforts in the area of minority recruitment have begun to improve its success rate in attracting minority students. Seven percent of the current Trimester 1 class members are minorities, as compared with 2 percent of the entire student body.

Neil Olson, D.C. '56, the 1991 recipient of the Teuteberg Award of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association. The award was presented during the Association's annual banquet, held Sept. 28 in Madison, Wis. Dr. Olson has served three years on the Association Board of Directors, and previously served as financial secretary for the Association.

The Teuteberg Award recognizes effort in the area of recruitment of chiropractic students. Dr. Olson has devoted many hours to this area of service, and has sent a number of prospective students to visit the Logan campus. He also has assisted new graduates in various aspects of their practices. Dr. Olson practices in Siren, Wis. James D. Edwards, D.C., '77, who was named 1991 Chiropractor of the

Robert Schaffnit, D.C. '46, and William Schuver, D.C. '87, who recently opened a new office in Jamestown, N.Y. The two doctors have practiced together in Jamestown for four years, and both have moved their practices to the new location.

Neill Schaub, D.C. '53, named 1991 Chiropractor of the Year of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association, at the Association's annual awards banquet, held Sept. 28 in Madison, Wis. Dr. Schaub was president of the Association in 1970-71, and served a total of nine years on the Association Board of Directors. In 1981, he received the Association's Teuteberg Award, which recognizes effort in the area of recruitment of chiropractic students. Dr. Schaub practices in Burlington, Wis., and has been very active in civic organizations there.

Charles Downing, D.C., '54, recently re-elected President of the American Chiropractic Association.

Dr. Downing practices in San Antonio, Tex., and was first elected president of the ACA in 1990. Dr. Downing's re-election took place during the Association's 1991 convention, held in Orlando, Fla. in June.

Dr. Edwards serves on the KCA Board of Directors, and is secretary-treasurer of the KCA Political Action Committee. He practices in Emporia, Kan. Donald Mynster, D.C. '85, his wife Debbie, and their daughter Emily, on the new addition to the family: Molly Lane, born on May 8, 1991.

Charles Bronder, D.C. '85, credited with playing a significant role in helping the New Jersey Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Teams achieve injury-free competition in the Junior National Wrestling Tournament. The tournament was held July 27-August 4, at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

Amateur athletes in the junior high/ high school age group competed in the tournament.

Dr. Bronder has worked with the New Jersey teams for three years, overseeing the athletes' health care, and the safety of their rigorous routines during the pre-tournament training camp and the tournament.

Typically, a team competing in the tournament would lose several wrestlers because of injuries. In addition to avoiding injuries, the New Jersey teams averaged a sixth place finish this year.

Dr. Bronder also praised the work of Kirk Morrison, D.C. '89, who assisted him this year in caring for the wrestlers. Dr. Bronder practices in Lodi, N.J., and Dr. Morrison practices in St. Louis.

Delaine Hayes, D.C. '86 and Bill Hayes, D.C., '89, who are the parents of Jackson Alan Hayes, who was born in early November. The Drs. Hayes have practiced in Waupaca, Wis., for the past two years.

Logan Alumni to Serve on Consensus Panel at Standards of Practice Conference Nine Logan alumni have agreed to serve as consensus committee members at the Conference for the Establishment of Guidelines for Chiropractic Quality Assurance and Standards of Practice. The conference will be held in San Francisco, Cal., January 25-30.

The conference is sponsored by seven organizations: the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations, the American Chiropractic Association, the International Chiropractors Association, the Canadian Chiropractic Association, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards, and the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research.

A document distributed by the conference's steering committee defined "practice standards" or "practice guidelines" as "authoritative statements on the range of acceptable performance in specific clinical circumstances. They are designed to assist professionals, patients, and third party payers in making decisions on what is appropriate health care. . ..

Guidelines must be determined relying on two bodies of knowledge published research and wise clinical judgement. A representative group of experts, from the scientific and clinical arms of the profession, reviews the literature and assesses this in light of the realities of daily practice."

Thirty-five chiropractors will serve on topical committees at the conference. Each committee will develop a written position statement for its topical area. The committee members will be assisted by the conference steering committee members, group facilitators, scientific and other resource persons, and a support staff.

The consensus panel committees will develop position statements on the following topics: reassessment; initial documentation and patient consents; professional development; collaborative care; clinical laboratory; management of complications; record keeping, X-ray and other imaging; maintenance and prevention/supportive care; instrumentation; frequency of care; outcome assessment; clinical impression, and modes of care. Each consensus panel member will serve on three committees.

Following the conference, a text of the conference proceedings will be published, and a condensed report will be submitted to an indexed journal for publication.

Logan Student and Alumnus Take Honors at Body Building Championship Trimester 8 student Deanna Rummage took first place honors in the Women's Open Heavyweight Class at the Gateway Body Building Championships, held in August in St. Louis. Rummage also joined Dr. Keith Bartley '90 in the Mixed Pairs competition, in which they placed first. Dr. Bartley, of Eustis, Fla., also placed second in the Middleweight Men's Class.

Rummage attributed her success to an intensive training schedule, particularly during the weeks before the competition. The recent change in the College calendar, allowing students most of the month of August as vacation, enabled her to schedule extra training sessions.

Alumni Association Board Meeting Held The Logan Alumni Association Board of Directors met Oct. 3-6 in Naples, Fla. Planning for Homecoming '92 was conducted. The annual Homecoming and Class Reunions will take place June 11-14, at the Airport Marriott Hotel in St. Louis.

Sharon Kehrer, Executive Alumni Director, said that the roster of Homecoming speakers and the

activity schedule will be completed by the end of the year. One major change in the Homecoming program is planned: the Association will offer seven or more workshops on the Logan campus on the first day of Homecoming (Thursday, June 11). Traditionally, only one .workshop has been held on campus 路on the first day of Homecoming.

Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen attended the Association Board meeting. The College also was represented by Dr. Ronald Harris, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, who joined the Alumni Association Board meeting on Saturday, Oct. 5. Drs. Hagen and Harris presented a report from the College.

Logan Alumni Association Funds Badges for Health Center Interns The Logan Alumni Association has funded Logan College badges for all Trimester 8 students, who began rotations in the outpatient Health Centers this fall, and for all Trimester 9 students. The design for the attractive blue and gold Health Center badge is a version of the College seal. Current Trimester 10 class members may, if they wish, purchase Health Center badges, which cost $2.00 each.

sional appearance of interns working in our Health Centers, the badges also will help identify our Externship students during their rotations at Deaconess Medical Center," said Dr. Grant. Externships at Deaconess Medical Center (formerly Metropolitan Medical Center), located in West St. Louis County, fulfill the Trimester 10 preceptorship requirement for Logan students.

"We very much appreciate Dr. Hunter's work, and the Alumni Association's generosity in providing the badges," added Dr. Grant.

The supply of badges funded by the Alumni Association will be sufficient to provide badges for all new outpatient Health Center interns for the next two years.

Wife of Alumnus Manages Historic Campaign Jan Rasch, wife of Dr. Brad Rasch 66, was the campaign manager for Mississippi Governor-Elect Kirk Fordice, the first Republican to be elected governor of Mississippi in 118 years. The election took place on November 5. Fordice defeated the incumbent governor, Ray Mabus, the first governor in Mississippi allowed to run for re-election to succeed himself.

Dr. and Mrs. Rasch are residents of Vicksburg, Miss., where he has practiced since graduating from 1

Logan. Mrs. Rasch is a 25-year veteran of campaigns and other political activities in the state. She explains that she has worked "in virtually every capacity in major and minor election campaigns."

Mrs. Rasch also has served on the state's Republican Party Executive Committee, and as district assistant for former U.S. Congressman Webb Franklin. Dr. and Mrs. Rasch are long-time friends of Fordice, formerly the president of Associated General Contractors in Mississippi.

Prior to the election, Dr. Rasch sent a letter to all Mississippi chiropractors, encouraging them to send letters urging their patients to vote on Election Day. Dr. and Mrs. Rasch are the parents of three children: a daughter, 24; a son, 21, who assisted with the Fordice campaign as an aid and driver, and a 17路year路old son.

Mh. Rasch is now busy planning Governor路Elect Fordice's inauguration, scheduled for Jan. 14.

Two New Faculty Members Appointed Yakov M. Kots, M.D., Ph.D., a leading neurophysiologist and exercise physiologist in the Soviet Union until his recent emigration to the United States, has joined the Logan College faculty on a part-time basis.

He will become a full-time faculty member in January. Dr. Kots has been named Lecturer/Clinical Researcher in Chiropractic Science. He also will consult with faculty and students in the Logan Health Centers on patient diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Kots received his M.D. degree from the Academy of Medical Science of the U.S.S.R. in Moscow and earned a Ph.D. in Neurophysiology from the Council on Medical Biology of the Academy of Medical Science. For the past 15 years, he had served as Chief of the Department of Physiology at the State Central Institute of Physical Culture in Moscow. He lectured to students at the Institute and headed a special laboratory for exercise physiology.

For a number of years, Dr. Kots also was a medical consultant for the Soviet ice hockey, soccer, and other teams. In this capacity, he treated most of the Soviet athletic superstars. Dr. Kots has about 250 scientific publications and is the author and co-author of seven published books and textbooks.

One of his books, Organization of Voluntary Movement, was published in the U.S. in 1977.

The electromyostimulation method for treatment of scoliosis is used with great success in the Soviet Union and other European countries, and Dr. Kots hopes to make it better-known in the U.S. A short article by Dr. Kots on his electrical stimulation method of scoliosis treatment has been accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of D.C. Tracts.

Western scientists are familiar with Dr. Kots' research on neuronal mechanisms of posture and voluntary movement. During the last 20 years, Dr. Kots has specialized in physiological problems of muscle training and fatigue.

Dr. Kots was the originator and inventor of the electromyostimulation method referred to today as "Russian Stimulation." This technique has played a major role in the many successes enjoyed by Soviet athletes in past Olympic Games and has produced dramatic results in increasing the strength of muscle and in hastening the rehabilitation process after minor injuries. The technique also has proven to be very successful in the treatment of

Kelly Brinkman, D.C. has joined the Health Center faculty as an instructor. She supervises interns at the on-campus Health Center, on a full-time basis.

Dr. Brinkman graduated from Logan College in 1990. Prior to graduating, she was selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. After graduating, she

practiced in Alton, Ill. This past summer, she participated in a health care volunteer program on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Prior to enrolling at Logan, Dr. Brinkman worked as an exercise physiologist in Texas, and wrote a pamphlet entitled "Fitness for the Traveling Executive." She received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Iowa State University in Ames.

Dr. Hagen Speaks at Black Chiropractic Association Meeting and CMCC President's Investiture Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen was a guest speaker at the 10th annual meeting of the American Black Chiropractic Association, held in Indianapolis, August 17-18.

Dr. Hagen spoke at a Sunday morning breakfast sponsored by Logan College. She discussed the recruiting of minority chiropractic students, and the need to make minority groups more aware of chiropractic as a health care modality. Also attending the meeting were two Logan students, Paulette Hig-

gins and Juels Delaney, both Trimester 7.

Dr. Hagen's travels resumed soon after the beginning of the fall trimester, when she represented Logan College at the Sept. 14 dedication of the new campus of New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Dr. Hagen took part in an academic procession of college presidents during the dedication ceremony.

Upon her return, Dr. Hagen said that she was very impressed with the

new NYCC campus. "The beautiful buildings and extensive grounds are a real credit to our profession," sl:)e commented. 路路路路 Dr. Hagen also traveled to Toronto, to speak at the investiture of Dr. Jean A. Moss as the new president of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Dr. Moss' inauguration took place on Oct. 25.

Prior to the appointment of Dr. Moss, Dr. Hagen was the only female president of a chiropractic college.

New Ad Campaign and Video Enhance Student Recruitment Program

The ad on the opposite page is the first of a series of new ads produced by the College's marketing firm, Adamson Advertising. The ad appeared in the October, November, and December issues of Dynamic Chiropractic, and will be replaced by a new ad in the January issue of the publication.

Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, Director of Admissions, explained that the ad campaign has been designed to support ongoing efforts to encourage practicing doctors to refer prospective students to Logan.

Additionally, a new video for prospective students is being produced. The first such video, "In Touch with Healing" will continue to be used. The new video is being produced as a supplement to the first video, and will have a different narrative and title.

Classroom and laboratory scenes will receive special emphasis in the new video, which is intended to give the prospective student specific information about the unique strengths of a Logan education.

Local TV News Show Features Logan Interns and Faculty Members KSDK-TV Channel 5 News, the top-rated news station in the St. Louis area, aired tape of Health Center interns performing physical exams, and brief interviews with a faculty member and a student. The interns, supervised by a Health Center clinician, were performing physical exams for National Youth Sports Program participants.

The National Youth Sports Program is a federally funded physical activity program, primarily serving inner-city youth, of ages ranging

from 10 to 16. Summer and winter activities are offered through the Program. Health Center interns and faculty had administered the required pre-season physicals for the Program's summer participants this year. Dr. Doris Bell, Director of Student Health Services, arranged for the Health Centers to provide physicals prior to the Youth Sports Program winter activities as well.

Eleven interns examined the children on September 28, at HarrisStowe State College in St. Louis.

Coverage of the physicals aired that evening, on KSDK's 10:00 p.m. news. A reporter from KSDK interviewed Dr. Eileen Powers-Pate, Health Center Instructor, who outlined the examination procedures followed by the interns. Steve Heney, Trimester 9, also was interviewed. Heney, who is interested in pediatric care, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to work with the children. John Thomas, Trimester 7, also was shown performing an exam.

Administrative Staff Update JoAnn Hewitt, long-time coordinator of general support services has taken on new responsibilities in the areas of alumni relations, placement of Logan graduates, and student recruitment. She will continue to join other administrators in representing Logan at state chiropractic meetings throughout the U.S. Hewitt's new responsibilities in the area of alumni relations include expanding student recruitment efforts by alumni, in cooperation with Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, Director of Admissions.

The coordination of general support services has been added to the duties of Charlie Feltmann. Feltmann continues¡ his responsibilities as the College's purchasing agent, and is now the shipping and receiving coordinator, and mail room supervisor. In addition, Feltmann will coordinate the College's three D.C. graduation ceremonies each year, and the annual graduation ceremony for recipients of the B.S. degree in Human Biology.

The graduation ceremonies formerly were supervised by Sue Fredericks, Director of Community Relations. Fredericks resigned her position in October, and moved to Las Vegas to be with her fiance, land and

real estate developer Ken Sullivan. An employee of the College since 1985, Fredericks had represented the College as a leader in numerous community and civic organizations. She served as secretary of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, and was active in the Chesterfield Rotary, the St. Louis Counts, the Variety Club of

St. Louis, and many other groups. She received extensive community recognition for her tireless efforts. Dr. Beatrice Hagen, Logan President, credits her with making the College much better-known and respected among community leaders in the St. Louis area.

On the Move: Bookstore, Technique Lab, and Postgraduate Department Relocate

The bookstore opened in its new location in time for the beginning of the fall trimester.

Alumni returning to campus will find the Bookstore in a new location, a room which previously was used as a technique lab and as the Student Clinic. The Bookstore had been located at the north end of the Administration Center.

The room which is now occupied by the Bookstore connects the Administration Center with the Health Center. The room provides the Bookstore with some 1,600 square feet of space, about 50% more space than the previous Bookstore location. An adjacent room serves as the Bookstore office and storage area, and a glass entry foyer provides visitors with an inviting view of the store. The foyer adjoins a corridor which allows direct passage between the Administration Center and the Health Center.

Hundreds of books, as well as clothing, supplies, etc. were moved from the old Bookstore to the new

location during August. The move was supervised by Marcella Barry, Manager of the Bookstore, who commented: "The real stars of the move were our Maintenance Department workers. They did an unbelievable job of renovating our new space. "

The technique lab which had occupied the space now used by the Bookstore has been relocated to previously vacant space in the basement of the Science, Research, and Ergonomics Center. Robert Brueggemann, Plant Superintendent, who supervised all of the renovations, said that the new lab, located in the west end of the basement, has a capacity of 110 students. It has been equipped with Williams Mfg. adjusting tables, as well as blackboards, a projection screen, view boxes for X-rays, and an instructor's platform.

As we were going to press, the Department of Postdoctoral and Related Professional Education was preparing to move from the Administration Center to "The Cottage", a separate building located in the southwestern area of the campus.

Dr. Allen Parry, Director of the Department, and his staff anticipated a mid-November move, depending upon the progress of renovation of the Cottage. Several new offices and a commons area were to be installed, allowing the Postgraduate Department to use one half of the space in the building. The other half of the building is not presently designated for use.

Errata We apologize for errors in a report in our last issue, entitled: "Radiology Department Adds Equipment and Announces Research Findings/Publications." In an announcement concerning an article published in the May, 1991 issue of Chiropractic Sports Medicine, the article was attributed to Dr. Norman Kettner, Chairperson of the Radiology Department, and Nancy Barry, D.C., Resident in Radiology at

Logan. The article should have been attributed to Dr. Kettner and Michae I Barry, D.C., Resident in Radiology at Logan, and to a third author: Claude Pierre-Jerome, M.D., D.C., a 1991 Logan graduate.

The title of the article was incorrectly listed as "Pathomagnetics and Contemporary Imaging." The correct title is "Carpal Instability: Pathomechanics and Contemporary Imaging."

Students Attend WCCS Conference Seven Logan students attended the 1991 conference of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS), held Sept. 23 - Sept. 28 at Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Kansas City, Mo. Jeri Epstein, Trimester 8, was the head delegate from Logan. Other delegates were: Kraig Phares, Trimester 9; Melissa Zimmer, Trimester 8; Sandra Bon, Trimester 3; Lydia Kinkead, Trimester 4; Charles Gaertner, Trimester 2, and Charles Weiss, Trimester 7.

Students throughout the world obtain membership in wees upon enrollment in any chiropractic college. The Congress was initiated by Logan students, and the first meeting of the Congress was held on the Logan campus in 1981. Logan also houses the Congress' archives.

During the 1991 conference, Jeri Epstein gave a presentation on the use of the Chiropractic Palpation PadÂŽ, which is being researched by Logan faculty members Ralph Barrale, D.C., Ralph Filson, D.C., and Robert Diamond, D.C. The pad is a modified version of the patented Sensor PadÂŽ, invented by Earl Wright of Inventive Products. The Sensor Pad enhances the sense of touch, and is being used world-wide as a breast selfexamination aid for women. The Chiropractic Palpation Pad has shown promise in providing increased palpation sensitivity. During the presentation, Epstein showed a video on the use of the Chiropractic Palpation Pad, produced under the direction of Ors. Barrale, Filson, and Diamond.

Unification of the chiropractic professsion was one of the primary issues addressed by students at the WCCS conference. Representatives from the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), the World Chiropractors Association (WCA), the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), and the Straight Chiropractic Academic Standards Association (SCASA) served on a conference panel. The representatives addressed students' questions about various professional issues. A videotape of the panel's presentation was made by Cleveland College, and will be available in the Logan Learning Resources Center. The Logan dele-

gates were very active in the questioning of the panelists.

During the conference, the students drafted a letter supporting the position of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges regarding the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) program, which is targeted for a phase-out by the Bush administration. The HEAL program is an important source of financial assistance for many chiropractic students. The WCCS letter was sent to Gerald W. Clum, D.C., President of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, to be submitted to the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and Environment of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Logan delegates also partipated in the updating of a wees catalog, available to representatives of any

college, which lists all chiropractic techniques taught at each college. wees also maintains a file of research listings, supplied by the colleges, documenting faculty as well as student research projects.

General information about Logan College also was made available to conference participants, and Sandra Bon and Jeri Epstein gave a presentation on the College. wees archival information housed at Logan was faxed to the conference participants as needed, by former Logan WCCS Chairperson Chuck Plante, Trimester 10.

When the Logan delegation returned to campus, they were joined by conference delegates and observers from several other colleges, who wished to visit the Logan campus.

College Sponsors Chesterfield Rotary "Safety Town" Program Logan College, along with a number of Chesterfield businesses and civic organizations, sponsored "Safety Town", an educational program for local preschoolers. The Chesterfield Police Department conducted four 20-hour sessions in June and July, reaching 144 children. The Departmental officers explained to the children how to prevent common childhood injuries and accidents, such as poisonings

and falls, and the importance of safety in and around water.

Painted building fronts formed a child-sized "Safety Town", which was used in teaching safety when negotiating streets. The College's sponsorship included the purchase of a "Safety Town" building front with the College's name. The College also was listed as a sponsor in all promotional materials for Safety Town.

Logan Officials Confer With U.S. Legislators College officials met with a prominent U.S. Senator and with the member of the House of Representatives who represents the College's home district. Both meetings, although unrelated, took place on August 19.

U.S. Representative Joan Kelly Horn, Member of Congress from Missouri's Second Congressional District, visited the campus with a member of her staff. Horn had spoken briefly during the opening ceremonies of "Chesterfield Days", a festival sponsored by local civic groups, which was held on the Logan campus in June. Her August visit, however, provided an opportunity for her to tour Logan's facilities and to meet with officials of the College.

Rep. Horn met with Logan President Dr. Beatrice Hagen, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. William Ramsey, Ergonomic Center Director Dr. Patrick Venditti, and

with Dr. Allen Parry, Director of Postgraduate and Related Professional Education. In addition to learning about the Logan curriculum and the continuing education of chiropractic physicians, Rep. Horn was made aware of the work of the Logan Ergonomics Center.

The Center has an extensive record of. successful programs involving the prevention of work-related injuries and cumulative trauma disorders, in a variety of business and industrial settings.

Later in the day, Logan representatives joined other St. Louis-area health professionals at a reception and discussion with U.S. Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

Senator Specter is the ranking Republican member of the Senate Appropriation Committee's Subcommittee on Health, Human Services, and Education. He will be seeking a third term in the Senate in 1992.

Dr. Hagen, Dr. Parry, Dr. George Goodman, Vice President for Chiropractic Affairs, Mrs. Linda Goodman, and Sue Fredericks, Director of Community Relations, met with Sen. Specter. They were joined by representatives of the podiatry and optometry professions in a discussion of the importance of the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) program, which is targeted for a phase-out by the Bush Administration.

Sen. Specter assured the Logan officials that he is well aware of the concerns of the chiropractic profession on the student loan issue. He said that no decisions have yet been made and that members of Congress are searching for the right solution, and are listening to as many people as possible to be certain that all points-of view are heard.

Faculty Notes Norman W. Kettner, D.C., DACBR, Chairperson of the Logan Radiology Department, has been elected to his first term as president of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology. His election took place at the College of Radiology's 1991 symposium, which took place in Los Angeles, Oct. 3-5. Dr. Kettner previously served as vice-president of the College of Radiology for two years.

During the College of Radiology symposium, Dr. Kettner also presented a paper, which he coauthored with John B. Essman, D.C. (Logan, '89) and Shell Hillis, Ph.D., D.C. The paper which was presented is titled "Functional Analysis of the Cervical Spine in a Symptomatic Population."

Michael Barry, D.C., Resident in Radiology at Logan, delivered a case

presentation at the College of Radiology symposium. His presentation was titled "MRI of the Rheumatoid Wrist."

Doris Bell, D.C., Director of Student Health Services, accepted an invitation to join St. Louis-area business and civic leaders at a luncheon and presentation by V.G. Guiness, a nationally known expert on gang activity, at the MathewsDickey Boys' Club of St. Louis on

Nov. 5. Dr. Bell arranges for Logan interns and faculty members to provide annual physical exams for the Club, a non-profit organization which sponsors activities for innercity youth.

Joseph Unger, D.C., Instructor of Chiropractic Science, is the 1991 Chiropractor of the Year of the Sacra-Occipital Research Society International, Inc. (SORSI), a chiropractic educational and research organization based in Prairie Village, Kan. The SORSI Board of Directors also chose to suspend by-laws which limited the Chairperson of the Board to a three-year tenure, and elected Dr. Unger Chairperson of the Bo;ird, for the fourth consecutive year. Dr. Unger teaches SacroOccipital Technique at Logan, and practices in South St. Louis.

Postgraduate Department Features Notable Guest Instructors Stanley Kaplan, D.C., D.A.B.C.O., a nationally recognized lecturer in the area of impairment rating and related legal issues, will be the instructor for seminars to be offered for credit within the Logan Postgraduate Department Chiropractic Diplomate programs in neurology and orthopedics.

A Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors, Dr. Kaplan received the American Chiropractic Association's Outstanding Doctor Award in 1973. He has published articles in the ACA Journal, the Digest of Chiropractic Economics, and Workers Compensation Monthly. He served as a consultant in the writing of the American Medical Association textbook, Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment. He is the author of Impairment Rating for

Dr. Kaplan Disability Evaluation.

Another Logan Postgraduate Department guest instructor will be James Cox, D.C., DACBR, developer of the Cox distraction technique, who will offer a seminar on the

application of his technique for the treatment of low back and neck pain. The Cox distraction technique has been used to treat lumbar disc protrusion, facet syndrome, sacroiliac aberrancy, scoliosis, spondylolistheses, and fixation subluxation. Dr. Cox is the author of two books: Low Back Pain: Mechanism, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Neck, Shoulder, and Arm Pain: Mechanism, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

First International Festival Held at Logan United Nations Day (October 24) was celebrated on the Logan campus during the College's first international festival. Sponsored by the Logan Student Minority Chiropractors Association and the Logan International Students Club, the event featured a video presentation of international traditions, food, costumes, music, and art, representing a number of countries and cultures.

The event was coordinated by Poonsiri Trujillo, Trimester 7, a Thai student who is President' of the International Students Club, and Sheila Taylor, Trimester 3, President of the Student Minority Chiropractors Association. Dr. Doris Bell, Director of Student Health Services and adviser to the Student Minority Chiropractors Association also helped plan the festival.

Health Centers Sponsor "Operation Sandstorm" to Combat Hunger The College Health Centers joined St. Louis University and Sports Print, a local T-shirt production company, in sponsoring a volleyball fund-raiser to fight hunger in the St. Louis area. "Operation Sandstorm" was coordinated by Dr. Bill Hemmer, Director of the College's Community Health Center in South St. Louis.

The fund-raiser was held on the St. Louis University campus. Eighteen six-person teams, representing the sponsors as well as other community groups, played one hour of volleyball each, between 12:00 Noon Oct. 12 and 12:00 Noon Oct. 13. Each team's entrance fee was 25 pounds of non-perishable food, which was donated to a local organization which supplies needy people with food. Each volleyball player received an Operation Sandstorm T-shirt.

Dr. Hemmer said that spectators also contributed food, bringing the total food donations to nearly 1,000 pounds.

Radiology Department Hosts Presentation on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Technology The Logan Radiology Department hosted a program for faculty and students on Oct. 31, by a representative of Cadwell Laboratories, Inc. The topic was the utilization of transcranial magnetic stimulation equipment in the assessment of neural conduction.

Ann Newtonn, a sales representative for Cadwell, demonstrated the us¡e of equipment designed by the company, which is one of the leading producers of electrodiagnostic equipment in the U.S. The equipment measures neural conduction velocity within the central nervous system, or in any

peripheral nerve. The loss of neural conduction velocity of the patient can be determined by comparing the neural conduction velocity measurement with published norms for the patient's age group, and for the length of the limb where a nerve is located.

Dr. Norman Kettner, Chairperson of the Logan Radiology Department, commented: "We are pleased to offer students and faculty members the opportunity to learn about Cadwell's equipment. This equipment represents cutting-edge techn o Io g y in electro-diagnostic measurement, and is relatively new

in the U.S. It provides a noninvasive, painless method of assessing the loss of neural conduction velocity. It will be extremely useful in the diagnosis of patients suffering from spinal degenerative diseases, or individuals who have experienced neurological injury.

"Another exciting application stems from the fact that an asymptomatic patient can present with an abnormal neural conduction velocity measurement. Thus, before patients become symptomatic, the need for preventive care to slow the progression of pathology can be assessed, using this technology."

Prominent Lecturers Visit Logan Campus

Dr. Monte Greenawalt, wellknown lecturer on chiropractic philosophy, visited the Logan campus on Nov. 5 and 6. Dr. Greenawalt gave classroom presentations for students in Trimesters, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9.

Dr. Greenawalt also is well-known as the inventor of the orthopedic products sold by Foot Levelers, Inc. of Roanoke, Va. The company has established a scholarship fund at

An all-College assembly was held on November 7, featuring Dr. Frederick Carrick, a faculty member of the Logan Postgraduate Department. Dr. Carrick is in demand as a lecturer throughout the U.S. and

abroad, because of his expertise in neurology. He is President of the ACA Council on Neurology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Chiropractic Neurology. He also has achieved diplomate status with the American Chiropractic Academy of NeurQlogy.

Dr. Carrick's presentation was titled "Neurology of Chiropractic."
