Logan Saddened by Death of Dr~ l.N. Toftness David Toftness; Dr. l.N.'s brothers-in-law, Drs. Glen Gaynor, Clifford Titus, the late Van Fenander, and Ronald Stockman; nephews, Dr. Arden Fenander and Dr. William Stockman; and great-niece, Dr. Laura Fenander.

Another nephew, Dr. James Toftness (son of Dr. Gordon) graduated from Northwestern Chiropractic College.

Dr. l.N. Toftness of Cumberland, Wisconsin, a leader in the chiropractic profession and long-time friend of Logan College, passed away on September 24.

A graduate of Palmer College, Dr. Toftness nonetheless maintained a close association with Logan, having studied with our founder, Dr. Hugh B. Logan, and utilized Dr. Logan's techniques in the tre~tment of patients.

This past June, Dr. Toftness and his wife Louise were honored during the Logan Homecoming banquet. Dr. Toftness had assisted the College in many ways, most recently by making the College the beneficiary of a $250,000 living trust. Also, Dr. Toftness set up a research fund at Logan for studies of the Sensometer, a chiropractic instrument which he developed. Over the years, Dr. Toftness often addressed Logan students, faculty, and alumni, on the development and use of the Sensometer. He was a frequent Logan Homecoming lecturer, speaking on a variety of topics.

Dr. Beatrice Hagen, Logan President, described Dr. Toftness as "one of the great figures of our profession. In addition to being a beloved and caring practitioner in his own community, he had tremendous curiosity and a strong motivation to improve chiropractic treatment. That led to his development of the Sensometer, into which he poured

years of work and large amounts of his personal funds. We are so thankful that he extended his friendship and his expertise to Logan College in so many ways over the years. We will miss him very much."

Dr. Toftness practiced in Cumberland for 58 years, until shortly before his death. He was one of four brothers in the chiropractic profession. One brother, Dr. Luther Toftness, also studied under Dr. H.B. Logan, aft.er graduating from Lincoln College.

In addition to his three brothers and his wife, Louise, Dr. Toftness is survived by six sisters: Eva Bjork, Harriet Ziegler, June Peterson, Aagot Titus, Doris Stockman, and Gloria Gaynor. Another sister, Vivian Fenander Milward, passed away in 1987.

Dr. Gordon has served as Chairman of the Logan Board of Trustees since 1980. Dr. Gordon's son, Dr. Thomas Toftness, joined the practice in 1979.

Dr. Toftness ¡will be missed not only by his family, his patients, and the Logan community, but also by many in the Cumberland area, where he was very active in civic affairs.

Logan Begins Field Rotation Program for Trimesters 2 and 6 The College began a pilot field rotation program during the Summer 1990 trimester, and has continued the program this fall.

Each student in Trimesters 2 and 6 completes three three-hour rotations with a doctor in the St. Louis area, scheduled over the course of the trimester.

According to Director of Student Health Services and field rotation coordinator Dr. Doris Bell, there are two main objectives for the program. She explains, "We want to give students an early introduction to what it's like to work in the field, to see how a chiropractic bffice is managed. Also, we want to help students in the lower trimesters integrate their academic background with patient care in the field - to see, for example, how the basic sciences relate to patient care."

Dr. Bell reports that approximately 30 doctors have become involved as field rotation sponsors. "Their response has been very good, because they can look back and realize how much they would have benefitted from a program like this," she says.

Dr. Ronald Grant, Clinical Director, has completed review of the evaluations received after the summer trimester. "The overall reaction is excellent," he says. "Field doctors really want to continue their involvement." The field rotation program will be reviewed for permanent implementation at the end of this trimester. Dr. Grant anticipates that the program will be approved as a permanent part of the curriculum.

His long-term goal is to include a new class each trimester, so that eventually all students from Trimesters 2 through 6 would participate.

"This program can be extremely helpful in preparing students to come into the clinic in Trimester 7," says Dr. Grant.

Stephen Feldman, now Trimester 3, completed his field rotation last trimester, with Dr. Lawrence Seger '84, who practices in Ellisville, Mo. "I went to the office several times in addition to the required three

He particularly enjoyed attending diagnostic meetings and reviewing radiographs with the doctors in the practice. "When you make connections between theory and the reality of practice, and see real human beings who have real problems, and see what it's like to get people well,¡ you gain great perspective," Feldman observes.

Although Feldman already had learned many things about the operation of a chiropractic practice by working as a student assistant for Logan faculty member Dr. Bert Hanicke, he found that his knowledge was broadened by observing Dr. Seger, who specializes in personal injuries. "This was my first exposure to a practice with this orientation," says Feldman. "I think it's important to get a wealth of exposure to different situations, in order to form opinions about what direction I want to go in practice."

Feldman explored the functions of Dr. Seger's office equipment, including a computer system which produces standard reports for insurance companies, and a variety of physical therapy and muscle strength testing machines. "I learned how the testing equipment works to provide information about

"Overall, I found my field rotation experience interesting, and I think it was a good decision on the part of the College to develop this program," concludes Feldman.

Trimester 10 Preceptorship Program Broadens Clinical Exposure, Knowledge of Practice Management Trimester 10 students currently spend six weeks, following completion of their course work, in preceptorship programs. Dr. Marianne Gengenbach, Coordinator of Clinical Education, hopes that the curriculum restructuring process will allow for full-trimester preceptorships, by containing all classroom instruction within the first nine trimesters.

Dr. Gengenbach describes the purposes of the preceptorship program: "We supplement students' Health Center clinical experience by giving them a chance to see principles they've learned being put to use in a realistic, clinical environment in the field. clinical teaching. And it exposes them to the demands of combining patient care with office procedures, such as planning for patient flow, billing, insurance paperwork, etc.

Hands-on training in practice management is important to supplement the didactic material in this area given in the classroom."

Most students complete the preceptorship requirement off-campus, working with individual doctors, usually in Missouri. Despite their education and experience in adjusting College Health Center patients, these students have not been allowed to perform adjustments during their off-campus preceptorships.

According to Clinical Director Dr. Ronald Grant, the Missouri law was changed this fall, and beginning this trimester, preceptorship students sponsored by field doctors in the state may adjust patients.

Alternatively, a few students each trimester choose the College's Externship program with Metropolitan Medical Center, a St. Louis hospital. At the Medical Center, externs focus on radiology, diagnostics, observation of operating room procedures, routine physicals, and case presentations.

Students also may stay on campus, pursuing clinical experiences which are more specialized than the basic Health Center clinical training of Trimesters 7 through 9. Preceptorships on campus are available in such areas as radiology and ergonomics. As another on-campus option, some students work on research projects; a project must be of a clinical nature in order to fulfill the preceptorship requirement.

August 1990 graduate Dr. Todd Jones completed his preceptorship with Dr. Phil Cavarretta '85, whose South St. Louis County practice focuses on orthopedics.

Initially, Dr. Jones was pleased to find that his classes and clinical

experience enabled him to develop a strong foundation in diagnostics, and this knowledge was easily applied as he learned about the conditions of patients. As his preceptorship continued, he also focused on developing knowledge of patient management and education.

In the later weeks, he was able to gain experience in this area, after observing many of Dr. Cavarretta's consultations. "Basically, I was his shadow, following and observing him," says Dr. Jones.

Dr. Jones feels Dr. Cavarretta's patient-education process is effective partly because of his ability to be relaxed, while also being professional, with patients. "This puts the patient at ease, and helps diffuse possible negative attitudes," he says.

"And, I found that changing such attitudes requires time, so the patient can experience treatment and results, and develop a positive view of chiropractic." Dr. Jones had a variety of opportunities to interact with patients, since he also was assigned the responsibility of placing some of them on physical therapy modalities.

Office management and procedures also were important components of the preceptorship experience. "Dr. Cavarretta has really streamlined his procedures, so I feel betterprepared in that area after working with him," says Dr. Jones. "I'm more knowledgeable of insurance forms and other paperwork, although there's a lot to learn."

Chiropractic Represented at the First World Congress of Biomechanics

The first World Congress of Biomechanics was held on August 30 through September 3, 1990 at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Paul Osterbauer (Research Director, Activator Methods),- Dr. John Triano (Chief of Staff, National College of Chiropractic), and I represented the chiropractic profession. The Congress attracted over 3,000 participants, and included some 1,200 paper presentations during the six day meeting.

The initial concept of the World Congress was based on the recognition that a variety of disciplines are interested in biomechanics, a field which thrives due to this diverse input. A biomechanist may be a physicist, attorney, psychologist, sociologist, dentist, educator, historian, chiropractor, or engineer.

Biomechanists have attended biomechanically relevant conferences in their own disciplines, but have not often had the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchanges. The World Congress offers just such opportunities on an international basis.

Many of the American participants at the conference are members of the United States National Committee of Biomechanics, an organization comprised of member societies representing diverse disciplines, such as the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Physiological Society, the Orthopedic Research Society, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and others. Many of these disciplines should be of interest to chiropractorsj whether the DC is in general practi~e or specializes in sub-fields such as sports medicine or orthopedics.

During the past two years Dr. Osterbauer and I have collaborated with a team headed by Associate Professor Jack Winters, Ph.D. of the Chemical and Bio-Materials Engineering Department at Arizona

State University in Phoenix. Graduate students Joe Peles and Kathy Derickson assist Dr. Winters. Their project has quantified neck movements and muscle activity in normal and injured subjects in an effort to better appreciate cervical spine injuries. At the biomechanics conference, Dr. Winters presented the team's report ("Relations between Neck Muscle Activity and Screw Axis Parameters of the Head") during a session titled "MultiMuscle Movement Organization; Role of Neck Muscles in Posture and Head Orientation." The session was chaired by Monohar Panjabi, Ph.D. of the Department of Surgical Orthopedics at Yale University.

John Triano, M.A., D.C. (Logan, January '73) presented the results of his collaboration with Albert Schultz, Ph.D. of the University of Michigan. Their paper, entitled "Neck Muscle Response to Manipulation of the Cervical Spine," quantified the forces produced during a cervical-break manipulation and the EMG response of the major neck muscles.

The conference had a profound effect on the chiropractic participants. Dr. Osterbauer commented, "It is apparent that if we are to become and remain leaders in the field of manipulative health care, we

need to emphasize biomechanics."

I feel that the chiropractic profession has suffered tremendously from our traditional isolation from the mainstream of scientific debate represented by the university system. In the midst of a session on muscle modeling, as I listened to presenter after presenter, our lag in understanding and participation in scientific methods, engendered by our difficulties in obtaining needed funding for research, was hammered home. I realized the necessity of making basic engineering concepts (dynamics, statics, etc.) integral parts of the chiropractic sciences taught in our colleges. It hit me as never before that the people at this conference have the expertise we need in order to quantify the mechanical properties of the spine and its neural control mechanisms. Their knowledge and experience will enable us to test chiropractic theories against reality, and they, in turn, will benefit from our years of clinical experience.

Dr. Fuhr, a 1961 Logan graduate, is cofounder and President of Activator Methods, Inc. H~ also is Founder and President of the National Institute of Chiropractic Research, and has been in private practice for more than 26 years. Dr. Fuhr serves on the Logan Board of Trustees.

Roy C. Amrein, D.C., '57. Dr. Amrein was elected President of the the Maricopa County (Az.) Community College District Governing Board for 1990. Maricopa County is the nation's second largest community college district, with 90,000 students enrolled for credit. Dr. Amrein practices in the Phoenix area.

John Hofmann, D.C., '68. Dr. Hofmann received the Michigan Chiropractic Council's highest award, "Chiropractor of the Year." Dr. Hofmann is an internationally known speaker, and practices in Allen Park, Mi. Roger Singer, D.C., '77. Dr. Singer was the keynote speaker at the joint conference of the Australian Chiropractors' Association and the United Chiropractors Association of Australasia, Ltd., held in Melbourne in September. Dr. Singer spoke on ethical and effective management when bringing associate doctors into a chiropractic practice. He also addressed students at the Phillip Institute (a chiropractic college in Melbourne), speaking on associateship from the student's perspective.

Dr. Singer practices in Glenville, New York, and is chairman of the Practice Management Committee of the American Chiropractic Association.

Douglas Cox, D.C., '79, and his wife, Jayne, on the birth of their second daughter, Logan Marie, born September 15, 1990. Dr. Cox practices in Charlottesville, Va. Dennis Doyle, D.C., '80. Dr. Doyle's paper, "Chiari Malformation Type 1: A Case Study" was selected for publication by the American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists, which sponsored a scholarship competition requiring the submission of a paper. The competition was open to all members of the chiropractic community. In honor of his achievement, Dr. Doyle will receive the F. Maynard Lipe Postgraduate Scholarship at the Convention of Chiropractic Orthopedists.

Dr. Doyle practices in Jacksonville, Ill. Several members of the Doyle

family are Logan graduates and have remained actively involved with the College.

Christine Becker, D.C., D.A.C.B.R., '80. Dr. Becker recently was granted Diplomate status and membership in the American Chiropractic College of Radiology. She spent four years studying p I a in Dr. Becker film radiography and advanced imaging procedures at Springfield, Ill. area hospitals and diagnostic imaging centers. Dr. Becker practices in Decatur, Ill.

R. Keith Hartman, D.C., '82. Dr. Hartman was named Team Physician for the U.S. Power Lifting Team in the 1990 International Power lifting Competition in Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Hartman, the first chiropractor to be named to this position, is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. He practices in Cary, N. Carolina.

Charles Bronder, D.C., and Phil Agrios, D.C., both '85, appointed Spbrts Chiropractors for the New Jersey Wrestling Federation. They treated top U.S. wrestlers at the Junior National Wrestling Tournament, held at the University of Iowa July 15-21. Both doctors practice in New Jersey, Dr. Bronder in Lodi and Dr. Agrios in Oakhurst.

Inspiring Logan Graduate, Dr. Jon Franks Dr. Jon Franks '81 visited St. Louis in June, attracting much attention on campus and from the local media.

Dr. Franks, of Venice, California, was paralyzed from the waist down in a motorcycle accident four years ago. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Dr. Franks competes against non-disabled athletes in triathlons held throughout the U.S. During his visit to St. Louis, he competed in the Lake St. Louis Triathlon, which attracted more than 800 participants.

A triathlon competition consists of three consecutive events: a 314 mile swim, a 26-mile bicycle race, and a ten-kilometer run. Dr. Franks completes the run segment in his wheelchair. He uses a special handpowered multi-gear bike for the bicycle race. Dr. Franks competed in more than 15 triathlons in 1989 and was the subject of numerous media interviews.

While in St. Louis, Dr. Franks was interviewed by four television stations and a radio station. Some of the interviews took place at Logan, where Dr. Franks met with students and visited classes. He also enjoyed a visit to the rehabilitation center at St. John's Mercy Medical Center,

where he met with patients and staff members.

Dr. Franks has been chiropractic consultant to several professional basketball teams and has been an athletic training consultant for several celebrities, including Sylvester Stallone, Jane Fonda, and Brooke Shields.

"Prize money, Olympic events, and world-class athletic status should be available to the physically challenged person," Dr. Franks says.

"The future doesn't have to be confined to just watching the world from a wheelchair."

New ACA President Attends Radiology Conference Dr. Charles Downing '54, recently elected President of the American Chiropractic Association, visited St. Louis for the 1990 Workshop/Symposium of the American Chiropractic College of Radiology. Held in October near the Logan campus, the conference was hosted by Dr. Norman Kettner, vice president of the College of Radiology, and head of Radiology at Logan. The speakers included MRI, skeletal radiology, and neural radiology experts.

Dr. Downing has attended the radiology conference several times.

A past president of the Texas Chiropractic Association, Dr. Downing has had a long history of professional leadership at state and local levels. One of his primary objectives in his ACA office is to 'convey to young doctors the need for professional association involvement. "They really need to be active, and work for the good of the profession," he says. "It will be what they make it." In order to stimulate such involvement, the ACA is developing new ideas to enhance its communication with chiropractic students. Dr. Downing feels the Association's practice management seminar program is one effective way to reach this audience.

Under Dr. Downing's leadership, the ACA also is finalizing plans to research views of the profession, held by the public and by chiropractic physicians. A survey, scheduled for January, 1991, will ask participating doctors to report on the types of practices they have, and desire to have in the future, and to specify the health care settings in which they would prefer to practice.

A Gallup Poll also is scheduled, which will ask consumers for their opinions of chiropractic health care, and ask them to indicate what physical problems would lead them to seek chiropractic treatment.

Another ACA priority is the introduction of the Association's Chiropractic Hospital Manual, which provides material that can be presented to hospitals and medical doctors. "We have the manual nearly ready to be reviewed for approval," says Dr. Downing. "It may help open the door for individuals to obtain hospital privileges."

Political activity continues to be a primary focus of the ACA. The Association's national office now maintains a State Desk, which compiles information on all political happenings involving the profession. State groups involved in legislative efforts can obtain information on how similar legislative

initiatives were pursued in other states.

Also important are ongoing efforts to ensure the passage of laws allowing greater freedom of choice to consumers desiring chiropractic health care. Dr. Downing explains that the time required for federal legislative work is substantial. "For example," he says, "it is unlikely that the Daschle and Thurmond bills will be voted on during this session." The Daschle bill would authorize Medicare coverage of chiropractic patients' diagnostic Xrays, which are not presently covered, although they are required in all cases. Senator Thurmond's bill would permit military commissioning of chiropractors.

Additionally, Dr. Downing emphasizes the need for strong outreach to the insurance industry, and to the business community as a whole. He hopes that ACA efforts will lead to coverage of chiropractic treatments in more Health Maintenance Organization plans. The Association is developing an industrial relations seminar, which will focus on effective approaches in working with industry, and instruct doctors on the process of ergonomic consulting.

Finally, Dr. Downing hopes the work of the ACA will enhance the chiropractic community's ability to shar:e professional pride, and to work toward common goals. He says, "Chiropractic is a wonderful profession. I want all practitioners to feel they are part of a family."

College News Briefs Health Center Update The Student Health Center, previously located on the first floor of the administration/classroom building, has been physically consolidated with Montgomery Health Center. By moving the Student Health Center into the outpatient clinic, the College has freed space for other uses.

Trimester 7 students recently began providing care to student families, as well as fellow students. Health Center clinicians (licensed doctors) work with interns in teams, so that less-experienced students are able to work with and learn from their more experienced peers. The clinicians hold daily meetings with their interns to discuss each new patient accepted the day before, and review all clinical findings, clinical assessments, and proposed treatment plans.

On a weekly basis difficult or unusual cases are presented by clinicians, interns, or visiting presenters. Beginning in Trimester 8, students care for outside patients, under the supervision of licensed clinicians.

Dr. Casper Appointed Chairman of Chiropractic Science Division Gary Casper, D.C., D.A.C.B.R., has been appointed Chairman of the Chiropractic Science Division, after serving as ¡acting chairman since January, 1990.

As Acting Chairman, Dr. Casper concentrated his efforts on providing leadership in the chiropractic curriculum restructuring process, updating the faculty evaluation procedures, and developing new formats for specialized technique classes.

Dr. Casper has been a member of the Logan faculty since 1985. He received a Master of Science in Civil Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional

Planning, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at Palmer College, and was granted Diplomate status in radiology after completing a residency in radiology at Logan.

Curriculum Restructuring Efforts Underway Dr. William Ramsey, Vice President for Academic Affairs, reports that the ongoing process of self-study (evaluating the achievement of the College's goals, objectives, and mission statement according to measurable outcomes, such as student examination scores) will result in recommendations for restructuring of the curriculum. The recommendations will be submitted to the College Curriculum Review Committee, and will accompany the report to the Council on Chiropractic Education when the College begins its re-accreditation review process next year.

Dr. Gary Casper, Chairman of the Chiropractic Science Division, explains that the College must continually review curricular content.

"There is such an influx of information into our profession," he says.

"And we can't just keep adding new courses."

All courses are being evaluated for content, and Dr. Casper is developing a plan to incorporate chiropractic into all courses in the curriculum, and ensure that each course is taught at the best point in the sequence, so that students may integrate all the knowledge they receive as easily as possible.

The pilot field rotation program, featured in this issue, also is a consideration for the course review process. Since students are observing in the field earlier, faculty may need to cover some topics in the classroom earlier than is now the case. Dr. Casper is completing recommendations for course objectives and syllabus content, to be reviewed this academic year.

In addition to the pilot field rotation program, another curricular program has been introduced. At Dr. Hagen's request, Dr. Donna Mannello, Assistant Director of Ergonomics, has developed a comprehensive gait analysis study plan. Each incoming freshman was videotaped for personal gait analysis, and will keep a copy of his or her tape to use as a learning tool in developing knowledge and skills.

During the early trimesters, students will learn basic terminology and study their individual tapes to recognize the phases of gait. They also will learn to look for asymmetries. As students progress further in their studies, they will learn to evaluate which muscles are active during which phases of gait, and to determine the causes of abnormalities.

Postgraduate Division Offers Insurance Claims Review Course The Logan Postgraduate Division is offering the first insurance claims review course for chiropractors held in the state of Missouri. Dr. Allen Parry, Director of Postgraduate and Related Education, explains that the course was developed in response to the recent passage of House Bill 1739, which establishes parameters for claims review by chiropractors in Missouri. The course is-cosponsored by Cleveland College of Chiropractic in Kansas City, Mo.

The course also will focus on the Chiropractic Manual for Insurance Claims Personnel, 2nd Edition, as developed by the Ohio State Chiropractic Association. "I feel this is the best educational tool available to insurance companies," says Dr. Parry. Chiropractic associations in eight states, including Missouri, have adopted the manual as the standard of chiropractic practice.

Richard McMichael, D.C., (Logan, '72), who was instrumental in the manual's development, will be one of the speakers for the course. (Dr. McMichael is a member of the Postgraduate faculty.)

Another featured speaker, Patrick Sullivan, D.C., D.A.B.C.O., collaborated with Dr. Parry on the development of the course. Dr. Parry comments, "This new legislation is an example of a reality that all health care professions must accept: prescriptive legislation in managed health care. All members of the healing arts will have to have explanations of the care they render and its outcomes. We are pleased that our course represents a collective response from both Missouri chiropractic colleges, both state associations, and the Board of Examiners, working together for the good of health care consumers.

Working together, we can demonstrate to legislators and insurance companies that we are capable of disciplining our own profession."

Following completion of the course, the Missouri Board of Chiropractic Examiners will review the transcripts and other qualifications of participating doctors, and rule on who is eligible to perform claims review.

The list of eligible doctors will be sent to all carriers who provide health insurance in Missouri.

Brian Teachworth Helps World Class Water Skiers Trimester 7 student Brian Teachworth has been serving as official trainer/chiropractic therapist for the Michelob Dry Water Ski Tour. The 1990 tour covered 10 weekends in various cities throughout the U.S. In each location, Teachworth worked with licensed doctors of chiropractic, usually from the local area.

Teachworth, a native of Superior, Nebraska, and a competitive water skier, worked with the doctors in each area to provide treatment to approximately 70 world-class skiers who participated in the tour. The skiers came from several countries, including the U.S., the Soviet Union, Sweden, England, Australia, and Canada. Teachworth will be the official doctor for the tour following his graduation from Logan.

The tour visited St. Louis the weekend of July 13-15. The events, held at Creve Coeur Lake, attracted 14,000 spectators. Teachworth, along with Ors. Mark Kram and Kathy Boulet, provided care for the skiers in a Logan College tent.

Seven of the skiers visited the Logan campus with Teachworth. They met with Dr. Hagen and viewed exhibits of gait analysis and biomechanics in the Ergonomics Center.

Teachworth discussed his work with the skiers during an interview on the ESPN cable network on July 30.

He hopes to be with the Michelob Dry Water Ski Tour next year, during its visit to the Soviet Union.

Teachworth also served as the official trainer and therapist for the United States Barefoot Team at the World Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., held in October.

Logan Hosts First Annual Chiro Cup Indoor Soccer Tournament Teams representing Logan, Cleveland, National, and Palmer Colleges competed in the First Annual Chiro Cup Indoor Soccer Tournament, held in September at an indoor soccer club near the Logan campus.

The Palmer College team, which won the tournament, received the traveling Chiro Cup from Dr. Hagen during a ceremony following the final game. The Logan Soccer Club hosted a reception for all the teams after the games and the ceremony.

National won two of its three games to take second place, and Logan finished third, followed by Cleveland.

Chad Larson (Trimester 9) initiated and coordinated the tournament, which, it is hoped, will be an annual event. The Student Doctors Council, the Logan Alumni Association, and Drs. Allen Parry and Jordan Arvold also helped stage the tournament.

Dr. Ramsey Visits Iceland, Canada; Chairs CCE Panel Dr. William L. Ramsey, Vice President of Academic Affairs, visited Iceland in June, and gave the graduation address to 78 associate, bachelors, and masters degree recipients who completed educational programs at the U.S. Navy/ NATO Base near Keflavik. The Department of Defense has invited Dr. Ramsey to address graduates at other bases.

Dr. Ramsey also went to Toronto to participate in an external review of Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. He and the other review team members were invited to evaluate programs and operations at the College, and to consult on possible improvements.

As Chairman of the Panel on Policies and Procedures of the Council on Chiropractic Education, Dr. Ramsey is leading the process of recommending changes in the

CCE's manual of policies and procedures, and developing policies in areas where none existed previously. After presenting his committee's work to other CCE committees and the Association of Chiropractic College Presidents, Dr. Ramsey will make his report to the full Council in January.

Logan Library is a Leader in Automation, Interlibrary Lending A report compiled by Dennis Peterson, Library Director at Palmer College, indicates that the Logan Learning Resources Center was the first chiropractic college library to become completely automated. The Learning Resources Center implemented its DYNIX system in 1986.

Learning Resources Director Rosemary Buhr also reports that Logan ranks tenth out of 212 libraries in Missouri in providing interlibrary loans. The ranking includes public, collegiate/university, special, and school libraries. Logan consistently lends three times more material to other libraries than it borrows.

"Such a high ranking reflects the quality of our collection and the

service orientation of our personnel," says Ms. Buhr. The ranking was published in the July/ August issue of Missouri Libraries.

Students Attend World Congress in England Four Logan students - Dennis Hall, Robert Mariner, Charles Plante, and Jeri Epstein - represented Logan at the World Congress of Chiropractic Students, held September 10-15 at the Anglo-European Chiropractic College in Bournemouth, England.

They were among more than 100 students representing 19 chiropractic colleges from six nations at the Congress.

Logan initiated and was the site of the first World Congress in 1981, and houses the Congress archives and its central computer.

Plante, who serves as president of the Student Doctors Council, gave a presentation to the Congress on its archives and computer at Logan.

Mariner gave a presentation on the work of the Kentuckiana Children's Center. (The Center, located in Louisville, Ky., is a chiropractically affiliated health care and education organization for multi-handicapped children.)

Dr. Reinert Retires

Dr. Reinert

Dr. Otto C. Reinert, ConsultantLecturer, Logan Research Division, retired on October 26, 1990. Dr. Reinert previously was president, dean, and an instructor at Missouri Chiropractic College, his alma mater, which became affiliated with Logan in 1964. Dr. Reinert then

became Director of the Diversified Technique Department at Logan.

Dr. Reinert is the author of numerous publications. His three books include a textbook, with an accompanying syllabus and videotape, of his course on Diversified technique.

Dr. Reinert wrote and produced two videotapes on the biomechanics of the lumbar and the cervical spine'. He has been a very active researcher, and has written many articles for chiropractic journals.

Dr. Reinert practiced in St. Louis and in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He is a charter member of the American Chiropractic Association and the Missouri State Chiropractic Association, and became a fellow of the International College of Chiropractors in 1939. He gave numerous presentations in England and Australia, and is well-known within the chiropractic communities in those countries.

Dr. Reinert received several association awards, and much professional recognition for his many contributions to the chiropractic field. Logan honored him with a special allCollege assembly held the day of his retirement.

Recent College and Faculty Awards Three Logan faculty members, Drs. Gary Sanders, Deborah Lawson, and Donna Mannello, recently were given awards in recognition of service to the Consortium for Chiropractic Research. The awards were presented during the annual meeting of the California Chiropractic Association in Sacramento in June.

The Consortium for Chiropractic Research began as a joint effort of the six West Coast chiropractic colleges. Presently, nine colleges, including Logan, and several state associations are active in the organization, which solicits grants and provides opportunities for ongoing scientific interaction among members. Several hundred individual doctors hold subscription memberships.

Dr. Sanders, Director of Research at Logan, is vice president of the Consortium, and is a member of the Program Planning Committee. Drs. Mannello and Lawson serve on the Outcomes Assessment and 'Measurement Committee. Drs. Sanders, Lawson, and Mannello also attended the Consortium's fall quarterly meeting in Las Vegas.

The Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research {FACR) awarded the College a grant of $62,000, to finance a study using the Toftness Sensometer, evaluating the clinical effect of low-force chiropractic adjustment. The study, entitled "First Analysis of Chiropractic Results," will last for 12 months and will collect and analyze data on the clinical outcomes of patients who have received chiropractic care. Principal investigators for the project are Drs. Elmer Hawkinson and Brian Snyder.

Dr. Hutti Teaches Second Class in Japan Dr. Larry Hutti, Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science, recently visited Tokyo for the second time to teach Logan Basic Technique to members of the Pacific Asia Association of Chiropractic (P.A.A.C.) His first visit, in 1989, had provided 94 attendees with a four-day lecture on Logan Technique and philosophy.

The 1990 class provided hands-on experience and teaching. This _class, also four days long, was limited to 25 persons so that each could receive ample personal attention.

Dr. Hutti adjusted each class member with the Basic Apex contact, Notch and/or Ulnar contact. He also demonstrated the side posture adjusting position and the Extension Position Notch (E.P.N.) contact. Dr. Hutti explains, "I wanted every class member to experience the amount of pressure used in the Basic adjustment and the proper location for the contacts. Also, the class would have the chance to observe an expert in Basic Technique give a Basic adjustment 24 separate times."

Mark Kram, D.C., Instructor of Chiropractic Science. Dr. Kram, a Cum Laude Logan graduate ('87), practices in Olivette, a St. Louis suburb.

D. Robert Kuhn, D.C., Instructor of Clinical Science. Dr. Kuhn, a 1987 Logan graduate, Cum Laude, recently completed a residency in Diagnostic Imaging at Logan.

Robert L. Bevier, M.D., Instructor of Basic Science. Dr. Bevier received a degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, and also holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Purdue University. Dr. Bevier, who teaches physiology, has 24 years' experience in medical practice and consulting, and in teaching medical engineering.

Claude Pierre-Jerome, M.D., Instructor of Clinical Science. Dr. Pierre-Jerome received a medical degree in 1979 from the University of Valencia Medical School in Spain.

He is a part-time instructor, and will give lectures on physical diagnosis.

A Logan student during 1986-1987, Dr. Pierre-Jerome also has resumed work on his chiropractic degree as a Trimester 9 student. Dr. PierreJerome interrupted his earlier studies at Logan to pursue research and a residency in radiology in Belgium.

Kathy Kuhn, D.C., Health Center Instructor. Dr. Kuhn, a December '88 Logan graduate, works with the Health Centers on a part-time basis.

She practices in Wentzville, Mo., with Dr. Gary Ditson.

Michael Taylor, D.C., Health Center Instructor. Dr. Taylor, an August '89 Logan graduate, practices in St. Louis County, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine. He works with the Health Centers on a parttime basis.

Theresa Vigeant, D.C., Director of Chirotherapy for the Logan College Health Centers. Dr. Vigeant, an April 1990 Logan graduate, assists student interns in the selection of chirotherapy equipment, and instructs them in its utilization for patient treatments. Dr. Vigeant earned a biology degree at American University and worked as a biology lab instructor and technician at Yeshiva University in New York City.

Raymond C. Henry, Ph.D., Director of Institutional Analysis. Dr. Henry will conduct statistical analyses of all facets of Logan's educational program. Dr. Henry received his Ph.D. in psychology from St. Louis University. He previously worked as a professor, training officer, evaluation specialist, research associate, and consultant. lee Shaffer, D.C., Recruitment Coordinator. Dr. Shaffer, a 1975 Logan graduate, works with Dr. Robyn Wilkerson, Administrative Director of Admissions, recruiting well-qualified men and women to become Logan students. Dr. Shaffer was Director of Admissions at Parker College of Chiropractic during 19891990. He previously practiced in Florida, and was a faculty member and Chairperson of the Emergency Medical Department at Miami Dade Community College. During the late 1970's, Dr. Shaffer served in several administrative posts at Logan, including Dean of the Postgraduate Division, Director of Public Relations, and Assistant Chief of Staff of the Chiropractic Division.

Adeluola Lipede, M.D., Instructor of Clinical Science. Dr. Lipede earned his bachelor's degree and medical degree from the University of Ibadan in his native Nigeria. He later studied nephrology at the University of London and earned a Ph.D. in Anatomy from Cambridge University and the University of Ibadan.

Dr. Lipede is currently lecturing on dermatology.

Dr. Johnson Helps Review University of Bridgeport for Establishment of a Chiropractic College Dr. Gary Johnson, Educational Coordinator and Professor of Body Mechanics, recently served as a member of an evaluation team conducting a site visit at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

Logan Representatives Attend Educational Conferences Dr. Kathleen Naughton, Assistant Director of Clinical Services, and Dr. John Gutweiler, Professor of Basic Science, attended the Second Congress of Chiropractic Educators at Palmer West College on October 20-21. Representatives of a number of chiropractic colleges exchanged ideas on improving chiropractic education. Dr. Naughton was named to the steering committee of next year's Congress.

Dr. Naughton also was one of two representatives of the chiropractic profession at the annual meeting of the American Association of Medical Colleges, held in October in San Francisco. The conference included discussions of curriculum development, assessment methodology, and innovations in clinical teaching.

Dr. McCauley Earns Diplomate Status Dr. Robin McCauley, Assistant Professor of Chiropractic Sciences, recently received Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. Dr. McCauley graduated from Logan in 1985, and also received a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware.

New Members Appointed to Advisory Council Arden Fenander, D.C. '59, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wi., and attorney Stewart Smith of St. Louis have been appointed to the Advisory Council of the Logan Board of Trustees. The appointments are for six months' duration, during which the two will work with Board members, ;rnd learn the functions, by-laws, goals, and procedures of the Board.

He was the alumni representative to the Board of Trustees during 19791980. He served as president and vice president of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association. Currently, he is vice president of the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Research. Dr. Fenander has won several College and professional awards, including the Logan College Alumni Distinguished Service Award, and the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association President's ¡ Award (both in 1986).

Mr. Smith's son, Stewart W. Smith, Ill, D.C., is a 1982 Logan graduate, practicing in Wood River, Ill.

Logan Faculty Attend APHA Meeting in New York Drs. Deborah Lawson, John Gutweiler, Vinod Anand, Donna Mannello, and Gary Sanders attended the 118th annual meeting of the American Public Health Association held in New York City September 29-0ctober 2. Dr. Lawson was selected to join the executive committee of the Chiropractic Special Interest Group and will serve as Group membership chairman during the next year. Dr. Mannello presented two papers to the Group.

TAX UPDATE James May of County Accounting and Tax Service, Inc., in St. Louis County, provides services to a number of physicians in the area, including ten chiropractors. May is an Enrolled Agent, meaning that he can practice before the IRS in proceedings up to tax court, where an attorney must provide representation. He recommends that chiropractors be aware of two major taxrelated issues this year:

reports can be submitted to the corporation, and reimbursed accordingly, and these reimbursements are not taxed. For further information, consult your accountant.

A new rule makes some automobile expense payments subject to social security tax. Doctors who have incorporated their practices, and who give themselves flat allowances for automobile expenses, should note that these allowances are considered taxable income. Therefore, they are subject to both income and social security taxes.

During the past decade, May advised doctors to slow down billing and collection practices in December, thus deferring income to the next year. This practice provides a longer period in which to draw interest on the income before paying taxes on it. However, since the political climate has shifted toward raising taxes, May advises his clients to collect on receivables in order to pay taxes as soon as possible, and avoid higher tax rates in the future. He suggests, "A yearend review with your accountant, who can consider individual needs, is important."

THE TOWER/FALL 1990 May adds, "A pension plan continues to be a good tax deferral mechanism. And, if you use a group plan in your practice, the individual dollar limit is much higher."

May also points out several general areas in which he feels many doctors may lack knowledge that would be helpful in reducing taxes: Recent graduates beginning practice should not overlook deduction of books, instruments, etc., purchased while in school. May ~x­ plains, "Although these items are not deductible while you're a student, the fair market value or the amount paid (whichever is less) can be deducted once you graduate and begin practice. Students ~hould keep careful records of purchases, and consult with an accountant to determine legitimate deductions after graduating."

Many doctors are not aware of the range of tax advantages for noncash charitable contributions. Real estate, for example, can be given to a non-profit organization. If the donor uses the property as a residence, this type of donation can be made .subject to retained life interests. The amount of the interest being donated is deductible as a charitable contribution. May advises that one should be certain that the donation is properly arranged, and he points out that after such a commitment is made, the donor would be prohibited from changing or otherwise disposing of the property.

A donor's will may make a bequest to a non-profit organization, which would reduce the estate taxes. May cautions that for those who have accumulated wealth, thorough estate planning is necessary. A lawyer and an accountant should be consulted. They can recommend arrangements leading to reduced estate taxes, and eliminate high probate costs. He adds, "An accountant can also be helpful to any doctor in planning for how the practice will be handled in the event of his or her untimely death."

Charitable contributions also may be made in the form of securities.

If the securities have appreciated in value when the donation is made,

there are tax advantages for the donor. Insurance policy proceeds may be made payable to a nonprofit organization, and the cash surrender value and annual premium are deductible as charitable contributions. (The recipient of the donation must be designated as irrevocable beneficiary.)

Doctors whose practices are in their homes should note that while there are tax advantages to this situation, if the property is sold, the business

portion will not be eligible for deferment of gains taxes. And, the gain will normally be higher on the business portion because of depreciation claimed for tax purposes during the period of ownership. In some cases, this problem may be offset by certain procedures used in selling or trading the property.

"Early planning with your accountant is extremely important for something like this, as it is for any major financial move," says May.
