Logan Welcomes Entering Class; Announces Record Enrollment Level September 6 was an exciting day on the Logan campus as the September class enrolled at the College. Th e new class, which has 156 students, raised Logan's total enrollment to 931, a record high. The class is the largest ever to enroll at Logan, the previous record being 150 students in 1973, when the College had only two entering c lasses per year. Logan's present capacity is 1,000 students.

"We congratulate our admissions office on its excellent work in recruitment of students, and we thank the many alumni and friends who have referred new students to Logan College," said Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman. "A growing student population wi 11 ensure that Logan College can enter the 21st century stronger than . ever."

Classroom Renovations Enable College to Accommodate Growing Enrollment After comp leti ng the process of insta lling ergonom ica lly designed seating in all Logan cl assrooms last year, the Logan Physical Plant began making plans for th e next phase of the College's classroom renovation program. During the August class break this year, renovation work resumed.

The Physical Plant faced a challenging deadline. By the first week of September, a lecture room had to be ready to accommodate what would be Logan's largest-ever entering cl ass - 156 men and women who needed

Classroom Renovations (continued from page 3) The former rooms 142-A, 142-B and 142-C were located near the Logan gymnasium. Two classrooms held 100 students each, while the third, a small room, was used as a technique lab. The three rooms were reconfigured to form two larger rooms.

The renovated rooms feature tiered (symposium-style) seating, ergonom ically designed tables and chairs, new windows, carpeti ng and sound-insulated wall s. Acoustical tiles maximize the effectiveness of sound quality produced by the new speaker systems installed in the rooms. Th e o ld airhandling units w ere replaced by a new heating, air-co nditioning and ventilation (HVAC) system allowing increased fresh ai r ventilation.

Th e Trimester 1 c lass settled comfortab ly into Room 142 -B upon enro lling in September, wh ile the Tri 6 c lass now occupies Room 142-A. When th e insta ll ation of window blinds was comp leted in October, the rooms became as attractive as they are fu nctional.

Brueggemann credited hi s staff for

excellent work and commitment to the project. "Art Sheldon, our maintenance supervisor; Brian 'Wa lly' Schneider, our carpenter; Dave Smith, our electrician; and Ken Burrows, our HVAC specialist, all provided great expertise and excel lent service," he said. "They made it possible to avoid having to subcontract out much of the work on the renovation project.

"Our grounds crew supervisor, Mike Kraemer, and his crew - Jeff Tadsen, Jeff Nowland, Jim Sondag and Doug Burson - kept our outdoor areas as beautiful as ever while also compl eting the drywall portion of the renovation project, " added Brueggemann. "Also, we were fortunate in having the services of a Logan student, Steve Ely (Tri 2), an experienced carpenter. Steve worked w ith us fulltime throughout the August break.

And Jul ie Horton, secretary in the Physical Plant, was a great help to me in handling purchase orders and coordinating the work."

Logan President Dr. George A. Goodman also praised the efforts of the Physical Plant workers. " We are very proud of these beautiful rooms," said Dr. Goodman. " By next M ay, we will have symposium-styl e seati ng in all of our classrooms. With tiered seating at properly designed tables and chairs, all of our students will be able to learn in maximum comfort, while maintaining ideal posture."

Dr. Goodman added, "This year's classroom renovations were largely funded by donations from alumni, employees and fri ends of the College.

Grants from the Foundation for the Advancement of Chiropractic Education and from the J.E. and L. E. M abee Fou ndation also w ere essential in funding this project. We appreciate our supporters' commitment to helping us provide the best poss ible experi ence for our growing student body."

Logan's enro llment growth also brought about a need for more parking spaces on campus, so the Physica l Plant completed a new 125-space lot

by September 1 . The new lot, located on th e north end of the camp us by the tennis courts, provides ample additional parkin g for students and empl oyees of the College.

Two Logan students participated in the Gatorade lronman world championship triathlon, which took pl ace October 7 in Kona on the island of Hawaii. The students, Darrell Day and Stacey Burke, are in trimesters 10 and 8, respectively.

Day finished the race in 76th place out of 1,497 contestants, with a time of 9 hours, 35 minutes and 49 seconds. He finished third among Americans in th e 25 to 29 age group and 20th overall among Americans. Burke finished in 323rd place in the race, with a time of 10 hours, 37 minutes and 21 seconds. He finished third overall among Canadians in the race.

"This was the worst year for wind in the history of this event," says Day. "At times, I could barely move along because of the wind. That made the race very interesting, but the top 15 finishers were Germans, which wasn't surprising. Many German triathletes

The students worked from 7: 30 a.m. to noon each day the w eek before the race, assisting the licensed DCs in caring for athletes as soon as they emerged from the water or completed biking and running practice in preparation for the event. Th e studen ts observed exa m inat ion s and adjustments performed by the doctors and assisted with soft ti ssue w ork.

They also assisted with triage, performin g assessments of the health care serv ices needed by racers.

The day of th e race, the students w orked from earl y in the morning until midni ght. They carried racers from th e fini sh line to the med ical servi ces tent if they co ll apsed upon finishing' the race. "We reall y got a work-out carry ing racers, although w e tried to spot peopl e who were about to co ll apse, and see t hat t hey received attention before thei r conditio ns w orsened," says Shaye-Pickell. " O f course, those wh o rea lly needed care didn't always want it, so w e also had to co nvince so me of the racers that they needed help.

"The differences among the athletes after the race w as rea ll y amazing. Some peopl e looked terribl e, whil e others looked like th ey hadn't done anythin g demanding."

who was featured in Progress Report, a publication of the Bellevue, Wash.-based malpractice insurer OUM & Associates. In the article, titled "Special Doctor Offers Helping Hand," Dr. Haanen discusses his experiences hosting students from Logan and other chiropractic colleges on preceptorships. A Logan student who has completed all other clinical education requirements can spend the entire 10th trimester working with a practicing doctor, or on a preceptorship in diagnostic imaging, ergonomics or another specialty on campus.

Ralph Filson, DC (5/69), Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science at Logan, on his August 12 marriage to the former Ivy Hill, Logan Alumni Director. Dr. Filson is the treasurer and a past president of the Logan Alumni Association. The Filsons' wedding reception, held in Clayton, Mo. after a private ceremony, was attended by many Alumni Association Board members and other friends from the Logan community.

Rita Steffey, DC (9/77), of Shelbyville, Ind., who is the 1995 Indiana State Chiropractic Association "Chiropractor of the Year." Dr. Steffey served on the !SCA Board of Directors for 12 years and was the first female president of the ISCA. She also served the Association as secretary and as first vice president. As the ISCA President in 1989, she led the Association's move to a new office in Indianapolis that is closer to the Indiana Statehouse than its previous headquarters.

Ty Talcott, DC (1 /78), of Dallas, Tex. on the publication of two articles related to chiropractic and managed care. A nationally known expert and prolific writer on this subject, Dr. Talcott serves on the Board of Trustees of Shared Physicians Network, a

national, not-for-profit independent physicians' association that contracts with managed care organizations to provide chiropractic practitioners.

Dr. Talcott's most recently pub1 ished articles are "Payback Time: When Will I Start Seeing Those Managed Care Patients? " (Dynamic Chiropractic, Sept. 25, 1995) and "Future Markets for Chiropractic: What Will Happen to the Next Generation?" Uournal of the American Chiropractic Association, August 1995).

William Droege, DC (9/78), on his Sept. 29 marriage to Janet Lay. Dr. Droege's St. Louis practice specializes in chiropractic sports injury care.

Margaret Freihaut, DC (9/79), of Fenton, Mo., who is the new President-Elect of the Missouri State Chiropractors Association. Dr. Freihaut is the first woman to be elected to this position . She has been an active MSCA member for 12 years, serving at the district level as president, vice president, secretary and state representative . After serving as MSCA President-Elect for one year, Dr. Freihaut will assume her duties as President next July, serving a two-year term in that position.

Rick Ottomeyer, DC (1/82), who has been elected President of the American Spine Foundation, a notfor-profit organization based in Minnesota . The Foundation promotes drug-free, non-surgical treatment of conditions affecting the back. Its present goal is to educate consumers at the national level about spinal conditions and about chiropractic. Dr. Ottomeyer practices in Forest Lake, Minn.

Lawrence V. Hambrick, DC (8/84), who has been elected President of the Kentucky Association of Chiropractors. A member of the Association's Board of Directors for seven years, Dr. Hambrick previously served as First and Second Vice President. He has been in practice in

Cold Spring, Ky., since 1985 .

Jay Bernzott, DC (4/86), who has been elected First Vice President of the Indiana State Chiropractic Association. Dr. Bernzott, who practices in Connersville, Ind., has been active politically in the state since 1988. He has served on the ISCA Board of Directors since that year, as a District Representative.

Bill Russell, DC (12/86) of St. Louis, on the publication of his paper, "Chiropractic Medicine in Dance," in Mosby-Year Book's Advances in Chiropractic, Vol. 2. Dr. Russe ll's paper discusses dance-specific exa mination and its importance in the prevention of injuries in the young dancer. The paper also covers the evaluation of chronic injuries in the experienced dancer and the use of proprioceptive rehabilitation in dance-specific rehabilitation and retraining.

A Certified Chiropractic Spo rts Physician, Dr. Russell specializes in the treatment of dance and performing arts injuries. He provided treatment for a number of "Phantom of the Opera" cast members while the touring company performed in St. Louis in August. Dr. Russell is a member of the Dance Network, a group of doctors affiliated with the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness .

Visiting Speakers Share Expertise In recent months several visiting speakers have provided a wealth of information to Logan students.

Richard Choate, College Relations Representative for the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company of West Des Moines, Iowa, visited the campus in July to speak to Rudi Vrugtman's practice management class.

Choate discussed malpractice risk management in relationship to professional liability, presenting steps to be taken to minimize loss, particularly financial loss .

After the start of the new trimester in September, Dr. Ray Wiegand of Garland, Tex. visited the College to speak to Trimester 7 and 8 diagnostic imaging classes, discussing the Logan System of Body Mechanics. Dr. Norman Kettner, Chairperson of the Logan Radiology Department, invited Dr. Wiegand to campus.

Dr. Wiegand donated $14,000 worth of computer software to Logan several years ago, providing a spinal analysis software package that he developed. He also donated a Neumonics digitizer needed for utilization of the software.

After graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Des Moines, Dr. Wiegand studied the Logan System of Body Mechanics and incorporated it into his software. The software makes possible the analysis of spinal changes, and of changes in joints throughout the body, with extreme sensitivity and accuracy.

The digitizer's pen-like instrument traces the image shown on a standard radiograph. The digitizer feeds spatial information and measurements from the image into the computer, which stores the information in its memory.

Data such as millimeters of joint rotation, degrees of change in angles of vertebrae, changes in millimeters of space between vertebrae, etc. can be produced and analyzed following digitization of a subsequent film of the same person.

The Logan System of Body Mechanics, developed by Logan College founder Dr. Hugh B. Logan, provides a system of geometric analysis of the vertebral column . Dr. Logan's system plots joint rotation measurements, comparing a patient's clinical presentation with ideal measurements that would reflect proper balance in the spine and pelvis for that person. The measurements are based on compensation for j oi nt rotation - both in the region of the spine being evaluated and in oth er regions of the spine - due to gravitational force on the spinal column.

An all-campus assembly in September featured Dr. Bobby Doscher, President and Chief Execut ive Officer of the Oklahaven Children's Center in Oklahoma City. The Center specializes in the care of severely disabled children . Oklahaven and th e Kentuckiana Children 's Center in Louisville are known within the chiropractic profession for their success in helping handicapped children.

A graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, Dr. Doscher has led Oklahaven for 15 years.

Visiting the campus in October to speak to Trimesters 1, 2 and 3 was Dr. Arlan Fuhr, who spoke on research . A 1961 Logan graduate from Phoenix, Ariz., Dr. Fuhr developed Activator Methods with Dr. W. C. Lee and has conducted extensive research on the technique.

Dr. Hartman began working as a professional entertainer during childhood and performed in movies and commercials as an adult, prior to attending Logan. After entering practice, he was active in the North Carolina Chiropractic Association and in the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and

Physical Fitness . Dr. Hartman was the chairperson of North Carolina's Chiropractic Sports Council from 1987 to 1990.

A Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, Dr. Hartman also competed nationally and internationally in power lifting. He spent three years as chairperson of the North Carolina Power Lifting Association Medical Committee.

Kentucky Regional Magazine Profiles YMCA Campaign, Quotes Logan Trustee

Dr. Elizabeth Parrott, Vi ce Chairperson of the Logan Board ofTrustees, is quoted in an articl e about the M ayfield/G raves Co unty YMCA in Come Tour th e Pearl of th e Purchase, a magazine published this year by business and tourism organizations of Graves County in Western Kentucky.

Dr. Parrott, who practices in M ayfield, was a founding member of

the local YMCA Board of Directors and is a past chairperson of the Board. The YMCA board, established in 1991 , committed itself to building a large wellness center for the local community. The center will include an eight-lane swimming pool and facilities for a wide range of health and fitness programming.

The board has obtained large donations to support the construction of the center from numerous loca l business and civic organ izations and secured a $1 .5 million pledge from a local charitable trust.

The magazine article quotes Dr. Parrott in discussing the YMCA's goal of developing "the whol e person" in addition to teaching athletic skills.

Dr. Parrott joined the Logan Board of Trustees in 1993 and was elected Vice Chairperson of the Board last spring. A leader in civic organizations in the M ayfield area, she is a past delegate from Kentucky to the American Chiropracti c Association and formerly chaired two ACA committees. She is a two-time recipi ent of ACA presidential distinguished service medals.

The president spoke w ith each co llege and univers ity administrator individually, telling Dr. Goodman that he was very familiar w ith the chiropracti c profession. D r. Goodman discussed with President Clinton th e need for continued student loan fundin g and access to federal grants for research and graduate education within chiropractic education.

"President Clinton was very cord ial and seemed to appreciate th e diversity of educational institutions represented at his reception," said Dr. Goodman.

Dr. Filson is President of ACA Council on Technic br. Ralph Filson, Assoc iate Professor of Chiropractic Sc ience at Logan, is the new president of the American Chiropracti c Assoc iation Council on Technic.

Dr. Filson was elected to his new office for a one-year term in July, after serving as the Counc il 's vi ce president for five yea rs.

A ny member of the ACA ca n join th e Counc il on Technic. The Coun c il 's Panel of Advisers includes representatives of all chiropractic co lleges. Th e panel is responsible for maintaining communication among the chiropractic co lleges, and between the co lleges and the profession at large, on the development and eva luati on of adjusting techniques.

Dr. Filson is a 1968 Logan graduate who practices privately in West St. Loui s County in addition to teaching Diversified Technique at Logan. Since 1993, he has been a co- investigator with his fellow facu lty member, Dr. Ralph Barral e, in pass ive extension adjusting research sp'onsored by Logan College.

Dr. Sportelli Speaks on Managed Care, Future of Chiropractic

Logan students fi Iled the College gymnasium to capacity on November 16, to hear internationally recognized speaker Dr. Louis Sportelli discuss chiropractic and managed care.

Dr. Sportell i has lectured th rough out the world and has spoken on behalf of the chiropractic profession in interviews with reporters from major U.S. print and broadcast media. A former president and chairman of the board of both the American Chiropractic Association and the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Society, Dr. Sportelli is President of the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company of Des Moines, and Secretary!Treasurer of the World Federation of Chiropractic. He has practiced in Palmerton, Penn. for 33 years.

The all-College assembly featuring Dr. Sportelli 's talk was organized by the Logan College chapter of the Student American Chiropractic Association.

Speaking in a down-to-earth, straightforward manner, the dynamic Dr. Sportell i elicited many questions from students in attendance at the three-hour program. Asked to assess the possibi Iities for graduating students to develop cash practices versus working within the managed care system, he responded, " Some cash practices will survive the shift to managed care, but these practices already belong to doc-

tors who have patient bases to support cash operations. Students graduating from chiropractic colleges today will have to join the managed care system, not opt out of it."

Rather than fearing the process of securing admission to managed care provider panels, Dr. Sportelli encouraged students to learn how managed care systems have evolved and are likely to change .

"The first generation of managed care models were designed to stop the hemorrhaging of money within our health care system," said Dr. Sportell i.

"The costs of health care had gotten out of control. Managed care stopped the hemorrhaging. In the process, it got the attention of all health care providers, and it scared us."

Dr. Sportell i said that leaders of the chiropractic profession became convinced 10 years ago that managed care would dominate our health care system within a short time. He credited these leaders with initiating major studies documenting the effectiveness of spinal adjusting - such as the RAND study and the guidelines released last year by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), an arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Decision-making in managed care being based on outcomes, the chiropractic profession would have insufficient data to take to the industry's decision-makers, were it not for such studies, according to Dr. Sportelli. " Every day, we're chipping away," he said .

"We're having a positive impact on managed care organizations*, but we will have to continue to provide data, data and more data."

Four factors will determine whether a health care modality will fit into the managed care paradigm of the future, said Dr. Sportelli. The modality must (1) produce the greatest number of positive outcomes; (2) achieve patient satisfaction with results and quality of care; (3) address quality of life factors affecting patients; and (4) be cost-effective.

Although economic factors continue to drive managed care decision-making, Dr. Sportelli said that as costs begin to be controlled, the industry is paying greater attention to qua Iity of care .

"Chiropractic meets the requirements of the managed care model," he said.

"For managed care to work we ll, however, patients must be educated about health care issues and asked to take responsibility for their health by maintaining healthy lifesty les," added Dr. Sportelli. "The chiropractic profession is predicated upon this concept, and we have preached it for years. In recent years, however, we've tended to place more emphasis on adjusting, and our patient education has suffered."

Dr. Sportell i noted that patient education about chiropractic itself was a top priority within the profession in the 1940s and 1950s. "Before licensure, chiropractors taught their patients about chiropractic with great zeal," he said. "We filled busses with patients who were willing to travel to their state capitals to demand licensure for the chiropractic profession ."

Dr. Sportelli feels that chiropractic patients today have not received enough information about chiropractic to be similarly mobilized as the profession works its way into the managed care system. "We must re-mobilize our contingency of satisfied patients, or we're lost," he said.

Dr. Sportelli added that when doctors complain to him about declining practices, he asks what they were doing when they were more successful. Upon asking specific questions, he finds that in most cases their patient education habits have declined.

In addition to effective communication with patients, Dr. Sportelli cited professional image and continued clinical education as critical for success.

"You must be competent as clinicians to identify the small number of situations that are outside your scope of practice, as well as the many cases that are well within your capability to handle," he said .

THE TOWER/DECEMBER 1995 "Establishing good relationships with health care providers from other disciplines also is critical," continued Dr. Sportelli. " Some members of our profession seem to feel that medicine is our enemy, but that's not the case.

Don't confuse political medicine with clinical medicine. They care as much about their patients as we care about ours. Don't burn the bridges of communication. Most MDs are not opposed to you; they simply don't know who you are and what you do."

Dr. Sportelli said managed care is evolving from a managed competition paradigm to a model of integrated, "Under the managed collaboration. first managed care model, capitation referred to a payment to a provider to handle a specific number of cases," he said.

Under the collaborative model, a chiropractor, an orthopedic surgeon, a physical therapist and a physiatrist might share the income generated by handling an assigned number of cases per year, with each provider treating patients whose specific conditions are documented as benefiting from his/her methods of care. Dr. Sportelli believes that managed care will move in this direction in order to produce the highest outcomes for the lowest cost.

"The collaborative model will not be about 'she hates him and he hates them,"' said Dr. Sportelli. "It will be about how providers can work together to produce the best outcomes with cost-effectiveness. Only patients who really need surgery will be getting it."

Dr. Sportelli also noted the growing impact of patient empowerment in the health care decision-making process.

He showed an article from a 1994 issue of the AMA News, describing videotapes distributed by CIGNA's HMO, Affinity, to patients suffering from low back pain, breast cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasis. The videos represent what Dr. Sportelli describes as an increasing effort by insurers to provide patients with information about the available treatment choices for their conditions.

"Patients in the past did not have enough information to make decisions or to question doctors' choices of treatment effectively," he said. "CIGNA is informing people that spinal manipulation is a viable treatment option in

many cases of low back pain."

Despite negative media reports on some chiropractic practitioners in recent years, media coverage of the release of the AHCPR guidelines last year informed millions of people about the benefits of spinal manipulation. Dr. Sportelli displayed headlines from major newspapers throughout the United States, such as the Connecticut Post's "Back Pain Rx: Chiropractor" and the Philadelphia Enquirer's "U.S. Panel Lists Chiropractors Among Back Pain Remedies."

"Fifteen years ago, I wouldn't have bet a dime that any newspaper in this country would ever print a headline like that," said Dr. Sportelli.

Asked for his assessment of the future of the AHCPR, which has been threatened with elimination by legislators, Dr. Sportelli predicted that the agency will survive with about a 25 percent budget cut. "Some special interest groups want to get rid of the AHCPR because it is only concerned about outcomes, and not about special interest groups," he said. "But it has produced far too much excellent data and too many effective, cost-effective guidelines for patient care to be put out of business."

Citing other examples of chiropractic's growing acceptance level, Dr. Sportelli noted, "When I started practicing, I couldn't get the local hospital to do a urinalysis for me. Today, I'm on the hospital's board of directors."

Dr. Sportelli believes that chiropractic practitioners wi 11 work together effectively to thrive under managed care. "This profession has always rallied when it needed to, and I think it will do so again," he said. "And the numbers are in our favor. About 80 percent of the 250 million people in the United States will have low back pain at least once, and many of them wi 11 be prone to repeated episodes. Even if we restricted ourselves to caring for low back pain and I'm not suggesting that we do that - there wouldn't be enough chiropractors to handle all of the cases."

* On January 30 of this year, the Wall Street Journal published statistics from the Group Health Association of America, indicating that from 1992 to 1993, the number of HMOs offering chiropractic coverage rose to 46 .6 percent from 28.4 percent.

Alumnae Featured in Chiropractic History Book A comprehensive history of chiropractic, published this year by MosbyYear Book, Inc., in conjunction with the chiropractic centennial, profiles three Logan alumnae in a chapter on women in chiropractic. The book's authors are Dennis Peterson and Glenda Wiese.

In a section on women in education, Dr. Beatrice Hagen, Immediate Past President of Logan College, is noted for her 12 years of educational leadership as President of Logan College and two years as President of the Council on Chiropractic Education. Dr. Hagen graduated from Logan in 1940.

The educational section of the chapter also discusses the achievements of former Logan College faculty member Dr. Marianne Gengenbach of Crawfordville, Fla. A 1983 Logan graduate specializing in sports injury care, Dr. Gengenbach cont inues to serve on the Logan Postgraduate Department faculty. She served two terms as President of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians, the certifying body of the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness.

The chapter on women in chiropractic also reports a study by Dr. Bernice Brinkman, a 1972 Logan graduate practicing in St. Louis. The year she graduated from Logan, Dr. Brinkman comp leted a study based on a survey of 452 women in chiropractic. The study compiled information on their reasons for choosing to enter the profession and how their practices were operated. Dr. Brinkman found that between 3 and 9 percent of practicing DCs at that time were women.

An overview of Logan College also is included in the Mosby book, and Logan College founder Dr. H.B. Logan and his son, Dr. Vinton Logan, are profiled in a chapter titled "The Pathfinders."

Alumnus Cares for Professional Boxer Lamar "Cochise" Murphy, an upand-coming boxer, last year chose 1990 Logan graduate Dr. Todd Narson and his wife, Life College graduate Dr. Corey Narson, as his chief medical and nutritional advisers.

Murphy lives in Mi ami, Fla. and the Ors. Narson practice in Miami Beach. Both doctors are Certified Chiropractic Sports Physicians and are Board eligible for the Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP) examin ation . Active members of the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, they have worked at numerous athletic events staffed by the Council. The doctors also hold staff privileges at the Golden Glades Regional Medical Center in Miami.

The 22-year-old Murphy is ranked among the top 10 boxers in his weight class by many boxing rating organizations.

"Lamar first came to us because of low back pain and wrist pain brou ght on by intense training and sparring sessions," explains Dr. Todd Narson.

"Because of his demanding training regimen and the extreme trauma th at can result from a bout, we worked closely with him and hi s head trainer and manager, Benny Collins, to design a course of adjustments to maximize hi s potenti al. We also wanted to help him avoid injuries caused by poor diet or training. Our plan was based on a thorough evaluation of Lamar's medica l history and of his personal and profession al health needs."

"W e traveled to Las Vegas with Murphy, as his team doctors, for the August 19 Mike Tyson-Peter M cNeeley bout at the M GM Grand Hotel and Cas ino," adds Dr. N arson.

"Murphy's fight with Miguel Angel Gonzalez, who holds the World Boxing Council Li ghtweight Champion titl e, was featured in conjunction with the Tyson-M c Neeley bout."

Dr. Narson and his wife are the first chiropractic physicans to be professionally active at such a high level in professional boxing, he says. He traveled to training ca mps throughout the U.S. as Murphy prepared for the fight.

"Every athlete has 'down time' due to injury," says Dr. Narson . "When you are preparing for a championship fight, every day of training is crucial. I had to keep Lamar on track. Every little strain, every little sprain, every subluxation was taken care of immediately. The causes of any aches and pains were addressed, and Lamar stayed on track with his training regimen .

"One week before the big fight my wife and I were flown to Las Vegas to continue our treatment and make sure Lamar was in top fighting form," Dr. Narson continues. "Every joint was checked and adjusted, every muscle properly stretched, to make sure he performed to the best of his ability."

Dr. Narson says Murphy fought a clean fi ght against Gonzalez, while Gonza lez hit below the belt and con-

tinued punching after the bell . " Murphy beat Gonza lez pun ch for punch, round for round, point for point," says Dr. Narson, who worked in the corner at the fight. " Everyone, from the ESPN announcers to Sugar Ray Leonard, who was doing commentary for the pay-per-view audience, ca lled the fight and declared Lamar to be the winner. " Peopl e in the arena were cheering wildly for Murphy as he became the first boxer ever to beat Gonzalez.

Unfortunately, the judges felt otherwise. Gonzalez was declared to have retained his titl e as lightweight champion, by a split decision."

After the fi ght, Dr. Narson ca red for minor injuries that Murphy received. " He received encouragement from Sugar Ray Leonard, who told him he has a very bright future ahead of him and that he is a true champ ion," says Dr. Narson. "And we hope our co lleagues in chiropractic wi II keep an eye out for us - Team COCHISE Murphy will be back and chiropractic wi ll be in the corner! "

Alumnus Speaks to Students at NCSU Dr. Marc Gottlieb, a 1994 Logan graduate practicing in Raleigh, N.C., gave a presentation on chiropractic to about 200 students at North Caro lina State University on October 3. Th e students are members of the NCSU Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Club or of the NCSU c hapter of A lph a Epsi Ion Delta, national pre-medica l honor society.

Dr. Gottlieb completed pre-ch iropractic co urses at NCSU prior to enrolling at Logan College.

During his lecture, Dr. Gottlieb showed chi ropractic educational sli des prepared by Dr. David Seaman of As hevill e, N.C. , a nationally known chiropractic neurologist and a member of the Logan Postgraduate D epa rtment facu lty. The slide presentation is on hu man cadaveri c anatomy.

Most of the students in attendance had studied comparative anatomy using vertebrate an imals on ly, Dr. Gottli eb sa id, and they were intrigued by the human anatomy slides.

"The response was very posi tive," said Dr. Gottlieb. " Many of the students are askin g me to participate in an externship program, so they can visit my practice for a day to observe ."

Dr. Gottlieb said he made the presentation in order to provide information o ri chiropractic to future health profess ionals wh o will go into a variety of speciali zation s. "Thi s is the ground work for better interdisciplinary relations in the future," he said .

Whi le studying at Logan, Dr. Gottl ieb wrote two arti cles that w ere subsequently pub lished in the journal of M anipulative and Physiologica l Therapeutics (JMPT).

Logan Represented at Centennial Celebration Members of the Logan College administration, faculty and student body joined the chiropractic profession in celebrating the centennial of chiropractic at the Davenport, Iowa, centennial celebration September 13-17.

Representing the College were Logan President George A . Goodman, DC, FICC; William Ramsey, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs; Sharon Kehrer, MBA, Vice President of Administrative Affairs; Ralph Filson, DC, Associate Professor of Chiropractic Science; Ivy Filson, Alumni Director; Allen Parry, DC, FICC, Dean of Postgraduate Education; Joseph Unger, DC, Instructor of Chiropractic Science; and Ronald Grant, DC, FICC, who was Chief of Staff of the Logan Health Centers until this trimester. After serving seven years in that position, Dr. Grant requested a teaching appointment at Logan.

During the centennial celebration, Dr. Unger gave a presentation titled "The Legacy of the Chiropractor, Inventor, and Researcher: Dr. Major Bertrand DeJearnette." Dr. DeJearnette was the developer of SacroOccipital Technique, Dr. Unger's specialty.

Also in attendance at the celebration were about 20 Logan students and many alumni, including Vi Nickson, DC, the College's archivist and a member of the first Logan graduating class (1939) . About 115 Logan alumni and their guests attended a reception hosted by the College administration during the celebration.

In addition to Dr. Unger, two other Logan graduates were presenters at the celebration. Thomas Hyde, DC, DACBSP, a 1977 Logan graduate and the executive di rector of the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness, directed a full-day pre-program workshop on chiropractic sports injury care. The indicators are intended for use in Missouri until national standards are adopted.

• Joseph Unger, DC, Instructor of Chiropractic Science at Logan College, and his wife, Cynthia Campbell Unger, were guests of honor at the 20th anniversary celebration of the Pacific Asian Association of Chiropractic (PAAC). PAAC also celebrated the centenni al of chiropractic and the 70th anniversary of Sacro-Occipital Technique during its meeting, held August 25 -26 in Los Angeles. The Association is a sister organization of the Sacro-Occipital Research Society International, Inc. (SORSI) .

Dr. Unger was recogni zed during the ce lebration for his wo rk as Chairman of the Board and Vi ce President of SORSI and for hi s teaching of Sacro-Occipital Technique at seminars in Japan. Dr. Unger led the first examination committee that certifi ed Japa nese docto rs in SacroOccipital Technique and SOT Cran iopathy.

Additio nally, Dr. Unger was recently elected President of SORSI. He has served six terms as Chairman of SORSl's Board of Directors.

Mark Kram, DC, Instructor of Chiropractic Science, has achieved Diplomate status with the Ameri ca n Chiropractic Neurology Board (ACNB). Dr. Kram completed the 315hour Logan Postgraduate Department program in chiropractic neurology.

New part-time instructors in the Chiropractic Science Division are David Ayres, DC, MD, CCSP; Martin Wolchansky, DC; Gregory Mathews, DC, Shelly Dowling, DC; and Jennifer Wolpert Krupp, DC. Dr. Ayres, who graduated from Logan in 1976, practi ces in th e Illinois cities of Roxana and A lton. He is the team physician for numerous high school and community co llege athleti c teams and for two weightlifting organizations. Dr. Ayres received his medica l degree from Northern Mex ico-American University in Reynosa, Tampico, Mex ico.

Dr. Wolchansky, a 1988 Logan graduate, has practiced in the St. Louis area since 1989. Ors. M athews, Dowlin g and Krupp comp leted their Docto r of Chiropractic degrees at Logan and entered private practice within the past two years. Dr. Krupp worked as a teaching assistant whil e studying at Logan .

Peter Schoeb, DC, a 1995 Logan gradu ate, is teaching c lasses in Logan 's Clinical and Ch iropractic Sc ience divisions. A native of Switzerland, Dr. Schoeb previously worked as a massage therapist and was a teaching assistant wh ile studying at Logan.

• Max Zebelman, DC, PhD, Associate Professor and counseling psychologist at Logan, has written and published a novel about a chiropractic physician.

The novel's 69-year-old protagonist survives a series of adventures in a jungle battlefield. Dr. ashton recently opened a rehabilitation clinic with 1982 Logan graduate Sandra Eckert Rubio in Silver Spring, Md. Dr. Hyde practices in North Miami, Fla. and is Executive Director of the American Chiropractic Association Council on Sports Injuries and Physical Fitness.

Logan Volleyball Team Takes Second Place at '95 Chiro Games Eighty-seven enthusiastic Logan students were among the participants in this year's Chiropractic Games, held at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, September 28 to 30. Each college could field up to two teams in each sport, with coeducational teams competing in softball, flag football and volleyball and all-male teams competing in basketball and soccer.

Logan 's vol leybal I team took second-place honors for the second year in a row, losing to The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in the finals. Logan volleyball teams have a strong tradition at the Chiro Games, having finished in second place in 1992, the first year the Games were held, and taking a gold medal in 1993. This year's Logan volleyball players were Geoff Kempe, Richard Lenholt, Chad Stewart, Jenny Pelisek, Ingrid Neufeld and Ray Hour.

Hockey was an exhibition sport for the first time at this year's Games,

with the Logan Hockey Club making it to the semifinals. The Hockey Club also has begun its 1995-96 season in St. Louis, competing in the Brentwood "N' league, considered to be the top amateur league in the area.

Logan student Daniel Shaye-Pickell placed fifth overall in this year's 5k run at the Chiro Games, with a finishing time of 16:07, just 16 seconds less than the first-place finisher.

Logan students initiated the Chiropractic Games in 1992 and the Games were held on the Logan campus in 1992 and 1993. The purpose of the Games is to allow athletes from chiropractic colleges in the U .S. and Canada to meet and enjoy athletic competition together.

This year, eight chiropractic colleges were represented at the Chiropractic Games . Logan College's participation was coordinated by Scott Dorrity, Logan Student Doctors' Council Athletic Director.

Research and Ergonomics Division Conducts Product Evaluations on Cervical Pillows Logan College's Research and Ergonomics Division will soon complete the second of three scheduled studies on cervical pillows.

The first study, funded by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER), examined a pillow with a cervical roll, produced

by CHS International of Minneapolis.

Gary Sanders, PhD, Director of Research and Ergonomics at Logan, is the primary investigator for the study.

Dr. Sanders will soon finish compiling data from the study for submission to FCER. About 100 Logan students were subjects in the cervical roll pillow study. Each subject slept on the pillow for seven nights and completed a user satisfaction questionnaire, responding to questions about the comfort level and qua I ity of sleep on the pillow.

Durability of th e pillow was assessed by mechani ca l loading (pl acing w eights on the pillow) over a three-month period, with pillow compression measured repeatedly.

The pillow's support of the cervical spine musculature was measured usi ng an electromyography unit.

Electromyography uses electrodes attached to a subject or pati ent. The electrodes conduct information on muscle activity into a comp uter that analyzes the data. If muscles are w ell-

Military Health Care Personnel Visit Logan College In Conjunction with Defense Department Chiropractic Demonstration Program Medical supervisory personnel from treatment facilities on four U.S. military bases and representatives of Aliron International, Inc ., a military health care contractor, visited Logan College on August 17 to learn about chiropractic education and health care. The visit was planned in conjunction with the three-year chiropractic demonstration program for the Armed Services, initiated through the National Defense Authorization Act of 1995.

Logan College President Dr. George A. Goodman is one of five U.S . chiropractic physicians serving on a U.S. Department of Defense oversight advisory committee that is participating in the implementation of the program.

Washington, D.C.-based Aliron International contracted with the Army and the Air Force to set up seven of the 10 chiropractic demonstration sites included in the program .

Al iron is equipping the sites, verifying credentials of participating chi ropractic providers, and arranging the hiring of two full-time chiropractic physicians and two chiropractic assistants for each base.

Al iron selects finalists for the DOD chiropractic positions from a pool of applicants and refers them to credentialing committees and privileging committees at each base for final approval. The committee on which Dr. Goodman serves had input on the standards uti I ized by the credentialing committees at the various bases.

Aliron has contracted with the U .S. Department of Defense in the past to provide other health care professionals, such as dentists .

The military personnel visiting Logan College represented Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Ft. Benning, Georgia; Travis Air Force Base, California; and Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. Their visit included a tour of Logan College's campus, including its outpatient

health care facility, Ergonomics Center, anatomy and basic science laboratories, and diagnostic imaging and classroom facilities.

The visitors received information about chiropractic education in basic and clinical sciences, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care, and about the chiropractic licensure process and recent research documenting the effectiveness of chiropractic.

In addition to Dr. Goodman, the following Logan administrators and faculty members met with the visitors: Dr. William Ramsey, Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Ronald Grant, Chief of Staff of the Logan Health Centers*; Dr. Norman W. Kettner, Chairperson of the Radiology Department; and Dr. Gary Sanders, Director of Research and Ergonomics.

Dr. Jon Buriak, a St. Louis-based graduate of Logan College, is a consultant to Aliron International for the chiropractic project. Another Logan graduate, Dr. Duane Lowe, recently was appointed to one of the two chiropractic positions established at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

After graduating from Logan in 1990, Dr. Lowe completed a two-year residency in family practice at National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Ill. He worked as a supervising clinician at Logan 's on-campus Montgomery Health Center until he received his appointment at Scott AFB. Dr. Lowe is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and holds Diplomate status with the American Board of Chiropractic Internists.

Like the other chiropractic appointees on the military bases, Dr. Lowe will be treating military personnel and their dependents, excluding pregnant women and children under the age of 18.

"Money 101" Seminars Help Students with Financial Planning A series of five hour-long seminars held on the Logan campus recently provided a wealth of information to students interested in detailed financial planning for the future.

The seminar series kicked off with a panel discussion by Drs. Jay Mulligan, Brenda Kingen and Dave Schaller, who graduated from Logan College in 1984, 1993 and 1994, respectively. All three doctors practice in the St. Louis area. Dr. Mulligan became the team chiropractor for the St. Louis Rams football team this year after the team moved from Los Angeles to St. Louis.

The doctors shared with the students in attendance their success stories in developing their practices, outlined business planning methods and ethical approaches to practice development, and discussed strategies for student loan repayment while getting started in practice.

Other speakers for the seminar series included Mike Brown, who hosts a money show on KMOX Radio of St. Louis, who spoke on investing; Michele Colson from the United Student Aid Funds, a loan guaranty agency, who discussed student loan repayments; Vicky Jacobson from Consumer Credit Counseling and Wendy Lutterman from TransUnion, a consumer credit reporting agency, who outlined effective approaches to credit rating management; and Norene Lippincott of Mark Twain Bank, who discussed securing business loans to start a chiropractic practice.

One of the seminar attendees, Eldon Meeks of Trimester 6, found Colson's presentation especially valuable because she brought a computerized loan assessment package. "We could input our individual information and find out how much payments would be over various periods of time," he said. Colson provided information on setting up debt with good repayment terms to save repayment

time and reduce interest payments.

"It was also helpful to learn that you can help yourself in small ways, like adding an extra $20 per month to your loan payments," said Meeks.

"Early in your repayment period, that might be the whole principle payment for the next month, since you're mostly paying interest at that point. Paying more on your principle in the early stages can save you a lot of interest in the long run."

Meeks also found the business loan seminar helpful. "It was great to get detailed information on getting a loan to start a practice," he said. "The speakers discussed how to put together an effective business plan to pre-

sent when you apply for a loan, and the factors banks consider in decision making.

"The seminars I attended were very worthwhile," Meeks added. "A lot of students are hungry for information about how to plan ahead effectively, because we know that good financial planning up front is the best way to avoid having problems."

The seminar series was arranged by Jonathan Gruett, Director of Financial Aid at Logan. Gruett has served as Logan 's Financial Aid Director since 1994 and recently was appointed to the Research Committee of the Midwestern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

Logan's 1995 Multi~Cultural Day

Students filled the College gymnasium to enjoy everything from Cajun cuisine to African dances. Food and dances from numerous countries and from cultures existing in the United States were featured, with many Logan students dressed in traditional costumes of their countries or cultures. The event was organized by the Logan Student Multi-Cultural Association, under the guidance of Association advisor Dr. Doris Bell of the College faculty.

Students Attend wees Meeting Four Logan students attended the 1995 World Congress of Chiropractic Students conference in Daven port, la ., September 18-22. Jack Hendricks, Trimester 9, President of Logan 's chapter of wees, led the delegation, which included Brad Wolf, Tri 7, Maya Pande, Tri 6 and Jeff Hoffmann, Tri 5.

The conference was attended by representatives of 18 chiropractic colleges in the United States, Canada, England and Australia.

Established by Logan students in 1980, wees holds a conference every year, with this year's meeting Palmer College of hosted by Chiropractic. Students become members of wees upon enrolling at any chiropractic college in the world.

Hendricks said the conference agenda included dialogue on definitions of terms us d within the chiropractic profession, such as manipulation and adjusting. He said the delegates unanimously passed a resolution encouraging all chiropractic colleges to allow individuals representing the full range of viewpoints and methods within the chiropractic profession to present information on the campuses.

"Additionally, we addressed the need for greater sharing of information among the colleges, and for a reduction of the barriers to communication that arise as a result of differences in philosophy," said Hendricks.
