December 19 - 31, 2011 LOGAN GRADUATES 113 DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC AT DECEMBER COMMENCEMENT; 14 STUDENTS RECEIVE MASTER’S DEGREE IN SPORTS SCIENCE AND REHABILITATION Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs held its 166th commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 17 in the William D. Purser, DC Center on the Logan campus. Charles Feltmann, the behind-the-scenes director of graduation planning, reports that 113 candidates received their doctorate degrees. Also, 14 students received their Masters in Sports Science and Rehabilitation degrees from Logan. They were: Demetrious L. Anderson, DC; Ryan S. Bates, DC; Jason G. Biondo, DC; Shamika A. Cordis, DC; Theodore W. Davis, DC; Eric D. Dixon, DC; Megan K. Floarke, DC; Christopher T. Ginter, DC; Matthew D. Gordon, DC; Joel T. Gyimesi, DC; Patrick J. Healey, DC, Tomonori Kawai, DC; Mary K. Goodman, DC, FICC, and other college officials led the ceremony. John L. Gutweiler, PhD, professor in the Logan Basic Science Division, served as master of ceremonies. The commencement speaker was Dr. Terry Yochum, director of the Rocky Mountain Chiropractic Radiological Center in Denver, Colo., and an adjunct professor of radiology at Southern California University of Health Sciences. Dr. Yochum is a second-generation chiropractic physician and a cum laude graduate of the National College of Chiropractic, where he subsequently completed his radiology specialty. His daughter, Dr. Alicia M. Yochum was a member of the December Doctor of Chiropractic graduating class. Summa cum graduate Darcee A. Schmidt delivered the valedictorian address. John A. Tarpoff II was presented with the Dr. Al Chamberlain Student Doctor Award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship, from the Logan College Alumni Association.

Logan’s 50th Awards Presentation was held on Friday, December 16 at a special breakfast in the Purser Center.

AN UPDATE ON THE MONTGOMERY HEALTH CENTER RENOVATION WORK As the progress on the Montgomery Health Center renovation continues, we would like to inform every one of expected changes over the next three weeks due to ongoing construction work. The elevator will be closed for repairs beginning Monday, December 19. These repairs will take one week. During this time, the Logan grounds crew/security team will be providing transportation to the lower level of the MHC for both patients and employees. The intern lounge will be closed beginning Saturday, December 17 for a three-week period, ending January 9. The heating and air conditioning systems in the Montgomery Health Center will be replaced during this time. The repairs to these systems will require access through the intern lounge. For the convenience of interns who are treating patients, additional computer sites have been set up at the back of the MHC for electronic medical record input. As always, both the cafeteria and the library are available as waiting areas for interns on shift. Thanks for your patience and understanding during this renovation project.

The Montgomery Health Center will closed on Saturday December 24, Monday, December 26 and Monday, January 2, 2012. Otherwise, the clinic will be open regular business hours through the month of December.

MHC TO OFFER BONE MINERAL DENSITY (OSTEOPOROSIS) SCANNING AT DISCOUNT Dr. Robert Davidson, Masters Program/Nutrition Science, has been successful in acquiring a new, state-of-the-art DEXA scanner to be used as part of his research project. Through coordination with Dr. Michael Wittmer, chief of clinical care for the health centers, and Dr. Norman W. Kettner, chair of the Logan Department of Radiology, the system has been installed in the Montgomery Health Center department of radiology and is available for clinical use.

Interested persons may contact their intern to have a clinician order an exam.

The DEXA test uses low-dose, dual-energy x-ray to measure the bone mineral density of the skeleton as well as other parameters. The exam requires a doctor’s order, a consent form, and a travel sheet. The scan takes 10-15 minutes.

The patient will be gowned or may wear a loose-fitting jogging suit which has no metal. The cost is estimated to be $150-175. Logan faculty, staff and students will receive a cost discount. Appointments are required and available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Your intern may schedule an appointment by calling the radiology department. OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE LOGAN CAMPUS Congratulations to Dr. Dennis Enix, assistant professor in Logan Division of Research, whose paper entitled “Nonuniform compression of sacral cartilage during angular rotation’’ was accepted for a platform presentation by ACCRAC. Fifty (50) students are needed to assist with the spring comp board exam, scheduled for Thursday, January 12. Work would begin at 7 a.m. and end by 12:30 p.m. Pay is $7.25 an hour plus snacks. Interested students can sign up to work in room 104 in the Science Building or at the back clinic desk in the Montgomery Health Center.

Robert Powell, director of sports and activities, advises that the Office of Student Services is planning a bowling league and a basketball league for intramural sports beginning next trimester. Basketball play begins the week of January 23, 2012; registration deadline is Friday, January 20, 2012. Games will be played at the Jewish Community Center on Tuesday nights beginning at 9:00 p.m. There will be a 4-5 week round-robin style “regular season,” followed by a twoweek tournament. Bowling play will begin the week of January 23, 2012; registration deadline is Friday, January 20, 2012. Activities will be held at the Brunswick Zone on Olive Street Road in Chesterfield. Days and times are yet to be determined. Also, the representatives from the Jewish Community Center will be on campus for open enrollment on January 18 and 20, 2012 in the cafeteria during the lunch hours of 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The “Free Milk and Cookies” event, sponsored by the Doubletree Hotel and Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs, was a fun success. The Doubletree Hotel brought more than 1,500 delectable cookies which were happily eaten by students, faculty and staff, to campus on December 13. (The Doubletree culinary team began baking cookies at 4 a.m. that morning to have them ready.) The drawing for a one-night stay at the Chesterfield Doubletree Hotel was won by Trimester-3 student Lauren Cantrell.

Dr. Laney Nelson, director of the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Wellness Center, will be traveling to Stockholm, Sweden February 1-5, 2012 to teach Soft Tissue Techniques which Support Decompression and Manipulative Strategies. He would like to have six Logan students accompany him on this overseas trip. For more information, stop by Dr. Nelson’s office in room F229.

Dr. Rebecca Gould reports that Dr. Paul Insleman DC, author of Roadmap to Starting a New Chiropractic Practice, will conduct a special business seminar on Saturday, January 28 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel on Swingley Road in Chesterfield. This seminar is open to all and is FREE to students. Topics will include types of chiropractic practices, how to obtain financing, negotiating leases, what it takes to thrive in this economy, and dealing with accountants and bankers. This seminar is sponsored by The Loomis Institute. Advanced registration is required.

Congratulations to Thomas Keller, associate director of integrated marketing and communications, who has been appointed President-Elect of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce for 2012. Tom was also recently re-elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR INTERNAL HEALTH SPECIALIST (IHS) PROGRAM Registration is open for the upcoming Internal Health Specialist (IHS) Program. Session #1, Internal Health, A Chiropractic Specialty, is scheduled for February 11-12, 2012. The IHS certification program will teach you a purely chiropractic approach for uncovering visceral causes that may be perpetuating structural problems. Upon completing IHS you will be able to confidently determine the underlying cause of your patients' health challenges. This is not just an enzyme nutrition class. Topics include biochemistry, structural and viscerosomatic analysis, laboratory interpretation and treatment. To be eligible for this class, students must be Tri 6 or above. There is a special tuition for students: sessions #1-5 are $50 for each session which includes notes and binders; there is a $25 for session #6.
