LOGAN SET TO GRADUATE 117 NEW DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC AND 18 MASTER’S DEGREE STUDENTS AT SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17 COMMENCEMENT Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs will hold its 166th commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 17 in the William D. Purser, DC Center on the Logan campus. One hundred and seventeen graduates are scheduled to receive their Doctor of Chiropractic degrees while 18 students will be awarded their Master of Science degrees in sports science and rehabilitation. Logan President George A. Goodman, DC, FICC, and other college officials will lead the ceremony. The commencement speaker will be Dr. Terry Yochum, director of the Rocky Mountain Chiropractic Radiological Center in Denver, Colo., and an adjunct professor of radiology at Southern California University of Health Sciences. Dr. Yochum is a second-generation chiropractic physician and a cum laude graduate of the National College of Chiropractic, where he subsequently completed his radiology specialty. He is the youngest recipient to be honored as a Fellow by the American Chiropractic College of Radiology (ACCR) for distinguished service and contributions in the advancement of chiropractic radiology. In his career, he has presented more than 1,200 lectures worldwide and had over 250 scientific articles published in chiropractic and medical literature.

FROM THE OFFICE OF STUDENT SERVICES Fifty (50) students are needed to assist with the spring comp board exam, scheduled for Thursday, January 12. Work would begin at 7 a.m. and end by 12:30 p.m. Pay is $7.25 an hour plus snacks. Interested students can sign up to work in room 104 in the Science Building or at the back clinic desk in the Montgomery Health Center.

Robert Powell, director of sports and activities, advises that the Office of Student Services is planning a bowling league and a basketball league for intramural sports beginning next trimester. Basketball play begins the week of January 23, 2012; registration deadline is Friday, January 20, 2012. Games will be played at the Jewish Community Center on Tuesday nights beginning at 9:00 p.m. There will be a 4-5 week round-robin style “regular season,” followed by a twoweek tournament. Bowling play will begin the week of January 23, 2012; registration deadline is Friday, January 20, 2012. Activities will be held at the Brunswick Zone on Olive Street Road in Chesterfield. Days and times are yet to be determined. Also, the representatives from the Jewish Community Center will be on campus for open enrollment on January 18 and 20, 2012 in the cafeteria during the lunch hours of 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Chabha Hocine Tepe, director of the Learning Resources Center, would like to thank members of the Pi Kappa Chi Fraternity for the time its members volunteered in repairing the library’s bones and models. Special thanks to Alex Ashby, Conor Campbell, Alex Green, John Groerich, Ben Hendrix, Andrew Rackovan, Kyle Wallner, Scott Kelly, and organizer Elra Morgan. This service allows the LRC to get these bones repaired in house, on a regular basis and reallocate the funds originally dedicated for this task to acquiring more bones and models. Dr. Laney Nelson, director of the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Wellness Center, will be traveling to Stockholm, Sweden February 1-5, 2012 to teach Soft Tissue Techniques which Support Decompression and Manipulative Strategies. Dr. Rebecca Gould reports that Dr. Paul Insleman DC, author of Roadmap to Starting a New Chiropractic Practice, will conduct a special business seminar on Saturday, January 28 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel on Swingley Road in Chesterfield. This seminar is open to all and is FREE to students. Topics will include types of chiropractic practices, how to obtain financing, negotiating leases, what it takes to thrive in this economy, and dealing

with accountants and bankers. This seminar is sponsored by The Loomis Institute. Advanced registration is required.

Congratulations to Robey Taylor, who has been appointed executive director of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, replacing the late Joanie Schmelig. Robey brings extensive professional experience in business management to his new position. He is a past chair of the CCC Board of Directors.

SUBJECTS STILL NEEDED FOR ONGOING RESEARCH STUDIES Dr. Dennis Enix, DC, MBA, is recruiting subjects for a research project titled “Mixed age cohort study of balance and proprioception.” The purpose of this investigation is to examine elbow proprioception and balance measures in order to stratify how these factors change across an age spectrum. Participants will have their balance tested with the NeuroCom Balance Master Limits of Stability test & Modified Clinical Test for the Sensory Integration of Balance test. The will also have their proprioception tested with the BioPac Position Sense device at the elbow. Testing will take approximately 20 minutes. Participants must be over the age of 30. Dr. Aaron Welk is recruiting subjects for a research project titled “The Effects of Running and Walking on Plantar Fascial Thickness in Asymptomatic Individuals.” Participants will be required to walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes or run on a treadmill for 30 minutes. The thickness of the plantar fascia will be measured using ultrasound before and after the run or walk. Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 55 and able to walk on a treadmill for 10 minutes or run on a treadmill for 30 minutes. Participants cannot be experiencing heel pain or have a history of fracture or surgery around the ankle. Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, is recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study. LOGAN COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SPONSORS RESEARCH AWARD The Logan College Alumni Association, in an effort to promote high quality research at Logan, is offering a $2,000 cash award to any student or group of students who’s required Senior Research Project is published in a refereed American journal. The published article must reflect research performed at Logan College and the publishing journal must state that said research was conducted at Logan College. Publication must occur within one year of the individual(s) graduation and upon proof of the publication, the award will be distributed to the individual(s) who participated in the project. The number of awards is capped at three per year and is given to the first three projects published in any calendar year. Please stop by the Alumni Office in room 110 with any questions you might have concerning this award.

The LCAA is also offering a complimentary membership to all Logan students. As members, students will be able to access alumni discount programs, the LCAA website with its new online alumni directory and apply for awards.

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR INTERNAL HEALTH SPECIALIST (IHS) PROGRAM Registration is open for the upcoming Internal Health Specialist (IHS) Program. Session #1, Internal Health, A Chiropractic Specialty, is scheduled for February 11-12, 2012. The IHS certification program will teach you a purely

chiropractic approach for uncovering visceral causes that may be perpetuating structural problems. Upon completing IHS you will be able to confidently determine the underlying cause of your patients' health challenges. This is not just an enzyme nutrition class. Topics include biochemistry, structural and viscerosomatic analysis, laboratory interpretation and treatment. To be eligible for this class, students must be Tri 6 or above. There is a special tuition for students: sessions #1-5 are $50 for each session which includes notes and binders; there is a $25 for session #6.
