August 8 - 14, 2011 LOGAN STUDENTS ANSWER THE CALL TO SERVICE IN JOPLIN When most people head to the southwestern part of the state of Missouri, they're usually seeking spend time relaxing at the Lake of the Ozarks, or enjoying one of the many fabulous attractions or shows in the Branson area. But on July 30, 2011, more than 35 Logan students, faculty and staff passed up the fun at the lake and the entertainment of Branson, and headed south for a much less glamorous location; Joplin, Mo., where the community there is working diligently to rebuild after being impacted by what many are calling one of the most severe and damaging tornadoes in the history of the United States. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once noted during a keynote address that “service is the rent we all must pay for the space we occupy.” With this notion of service and commitment to others in mind, the Logan Office of Student Services in a collaborative partnership with the Student Doctors Council, organized and led this group to Joplin for a one-day service trip to provide much needed assistance to the community of families most affected by the recent tornado. “This group of students worked so hard and accomplished so much. We are very thankful for what they have done,” said Mysti, center director of Mysti’s Mission, the largest disaster relief distribution center in Joplin. The heat of the day proved to be a worthy opponent, but the students did not waiver in their resolve to serve. Instead they worked smarter, and more cohesively to better utilize and leverage the size of our group against the size of the task. After a long day a service, the Logan crew concluded the day by taking a guided tour of some of the most heavily impacted areas of the city to see the massive ruin left behind by the storm. “The destruction here is unbelievable,” said Aaron Armetta, SDC executive council member. “I can’t believe my eyes.” Many students echoed this feedback, and shared a deep sense of gratitude for having had the opportunity to serve the people of Joplin in what they believed to be both a meaningful and impactful way. James Paine, Logan dean of students, is very proud of this group of selfless student leaders. “I have tremendous regard and appreciation for what they sacrificed and what they accomplished in making this service initiative a tremendous success. I certainly believe that we all grew a little in our collective perspective of what it means to pull together and serve a neighbor in need.” NEW STUDENT DOCTORS COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD IS ANNOUNCED President: Andrew Alcorn Vice President: Jeffrey Wieringa Secretary: Christina Lynch Treasurer: Aaron Armetta Parliamentarian: Noel Kite Student Services: Joshua Bodine-Lederman and Derrick Hamilton Student Activities: Joshua Nichols and Scott Weiland
