August 22 – September 4, 2011 LOGAN GRADUATES 66 DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC AT AUGUST COMMENCEMENT; 26 STUDENTS RECEIVE MASTER’S DEGREE IN SPORTS SCIENCE AND REHABILITATION Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs held its 165th commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 in the William D. Purser, DC Center on the Logan campus. Charles Feltmann, the behind-the-scenes director of graduation planning, reports that 66 candidates received their doctorate degrees. Also, 26 students received their Masters in Sports Science and Rehabilitation degrees from Logan. They were: Ian Philipe Ahearn, DC; Carson Richard Aune, DC; Guillermo Bello Betancourt, DC; Abraham M. Carpenter, DC; Nicholas Scott Curry, DC; Avid Geoffrey Doiron, DC; Tracy M. Associate Professor Daryl Ridgeway, DC, chair of the Chiropractic Science Division, served as master of ceremonies.

The commencement speaker was Kent S. Greenawalt, president and CEO of Foot Levelers Inc. Mr. Greenawalt received an honorary degree of doctor of laws at the commencement. Magna cum graduate Carolyn L. McGrath delivered the valedictorian address. She was also presented with the Dr. Al Chamberlain Student Doctor Award which includes a $1,000 scholarship.

Logan’s 49th Awards Presentation was held on Friday, August 19 at a special breakfast in the Purser Center.

Eight graduates were recognized with special academic honors. They included: valedictorian Carolyn L. McGrath, Amanda M. Stolle and Kevin P. Ward, magna cum laude (3.74 GPA or better); Timothy A. Wanninger, Henry W. Krug IV, Lydia D. Ogden and Megan K. Floarke, cum laude (3.6 GPA or better).

Four graduates were selected for inclusion in the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges. They were: Carolyn L. McGrath, Amanda M. Stolle, Timothy A. Wanninger and Kevin P. Ward.

Other honorees included: Carolyn L. McGrath, Basic Science Division Award; Chiropractic Science Division Awards: Dean H. Powell, Logan Basic Technique Award; Michael S. Harbison, Diversified Technique Award; Jude A. Miller and Joseph N. Snyder, overall Chiropractic Science Division Award; Clinical Science Division Award: Carolyn L. McGrath; Learning Resources Center Awards: Jude A. Miller and Kevin P. Ward; Radiology Department Award: Carolyn L. McGrath; Research Department Award: Jared M. Gullet, Henry W. Krug IV, Amanda M. Stolle, Holly A. Tucker and Kevin P. Ward; and Sports and Rehabilitation Department Award: Eric D. Dixon.

Health Center Achievement Awards were presented to: Demetrius L. Anderson, Garrett T. Bruni, Ashley L. Eavenson, Michael S. Harbison, Carolyn L. McGrath, Jude A. Miller, Timothy M. Plumley, Joseph N. Snyder and Jeffrey T. Yates. Health Center Senior Intern Assistant Awards were presented to: Joshua M. Bell, Garrett T. Bruni, Kristie L. Davis, Jeaana L. Gifford, Jared M. Gullett, Michael S. Harbison, Margaret A. O’Toole, Anthony M. Pasek, Timothy M. Plumley, Nathaniel K. Ritchie, Amanda M. Stolle, Rebecca K. Sullivan, John M. Tyler, Timothy J. Wilson and Jeffrey T. Yates.

OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE CAMPUS Workers are needed for Comp Boards. HAVE FUN and earn $7.25 an hour plus snacks. JOB OPPORTUNITY: Dr. Patrick Montgomery is seeking a work-study student for up to 10 hours a week.

Logan LRC Director Chabha Tepe is developing a Leisure Reading Area to give students, faculty, and staff access to popular literature for recreational reading. She is asking Logan family members to donate fiction and non-fiction books and magazines that are appropriate for our readers, for example: Commercial and Literary Fiction: best sellers (romance, mysteries, and thrillers), classics (poetry, drama), etc. Non-Fiction: technology, travel, cookbooks, biographies, photography, art & architecture, etc. Magazines: Time, Discover, The Economist, National Geographic, Forbes, PC World, etc. Recent hard cover and paperback books and magazines in good condition are preferred. All donations will be acknowledged by a thank you letter listing the donated items.

Kathy Conable, associate professor in Logan’s Chiropractic Science Division, would like to congratulate Tri 9 students Sharonrose Samelak and Victoria Patterson who both passed the rigorous certification examination in Applied Kinesiology. Well done!

SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Dr. Kenneth Reckelhoff is recruiting subjects for a study utilizing diagnostic ultrasound entitled, “Normative Evaluation of the Scapholunate Ligament during the Squeeze Test.” The study is painless and takes less than 10 minutes per subject. Participants will be scanned using a diagnostic ultrasound probe while squeezing a grip strength dynamometer. Participants between the ages of 18-45 who have not had wrist pain in the last year, or prior wrist sprain, fracture, dislocation, surgery or arthritis will qualify for the study. Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, and Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study.

City of Chesterfield staff intends to be on-site to sell dog tags and supervise dog park etiquette. The city bought the 18.5-acre Ernst Eberwein property last year. The fenced-in, keypad-locked dog run will be near the Baxter Road side, next to Dierbergs Market Place. There will be two separate pens, one for small dogs, the other for all dogs—and a water feature of some sort. Only Chesterfield residents and dogs may use the dog run. A crushed stone trail will wrap around the entire park. Much of the proposed plantings will be executed in the fall in cooler temperatures. The park will also accept donations for trees, benches, picnic tables and more through Chesterfield Living Legacy.
