August 15 - 21, 2011 LOGAN SET TO GRADUATE 66 NEW DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC AND 26 MASTER’S DEGREE STUDENTS AT SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 COMMENCEMENT Logan College of Chiropractic will hold its 165th commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 20 in the William D. Purser, DC Center on the Logan campus. Approximately 66 graduates are scheduled to receive their doctor of chiropractic degrees while 26 students will be awarded their Master of Science degrees in sports science and rehabilitation. Logan President George A. Goodman, DC, FICC, and other college officials will lead the ceremony. The commencement speaker will be Kent S. Greenawalt, president and CEO of Footlevelers. Mr. Greenawalt will receive an honorary degree of doctor of laws at the commencement.

LOGAN SPORTS COUNCIL ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT PANCAKE BREAKFAST IS MONDAY Adam Ligon, vice president of the Logan Sports Council, reports that the Logan Sports Council will sponsor an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, Monday August 15 from 7 to 10 a.m. in the cafeteria. The breakfast cost is $5 for pancakes with sausage and beverages. Students, staff and faculty are all invited to chow down!

A REMINDER TO STUDENTS: If you have a mixed schedule and see that there is a conflict in the finals schedule, remember that all conflicts and make-up exams take place on Friday, August 19. You also must complete the paperwork from the Testing Center to ensure that a final exam is available on that day.

Keri Szwarc, financial officer at Logan, advises August 2011 graduates that this is the final week to stop by the Financial Aid Offices to pick up their Exit Counseling Paperwork. This paperwork must be completed and returned to Financial Aid prior to Graduation Checkout. Your packets can be picked up in office 267.

Logan LRC Director Chabha Tepe is developing a Leisure Reading Area to give students, faculty, and staff access to popular literature for recreational reading. She is asking Logan family members to donate fiction and non-fiction books and magazines that are appropriate for our readers, for example:

Commercial and Literary Fiction: best sellers (romance, mysteries, and thrillers), classics (poetry, drama), etc.

Non-Fiction: technology, travel, cookbooks, biographies, photography, art & architecture, etc.

Magazines: Time, Discover, The Economist, National Geographic, Forbes, PC World, etc.

Recent hard cover and paperback books and magazines in good condition are preferred. All donations will be acknowledged by a thank you letter listing the donated items.

JOB OPPORTUNITY: Dr. Patrick Montgomery is seeking a work-study student for up to 10 hours a week.

Beau Beard, president of the Logan Sports Council, was recently featured in the August1 edition of the Chesterfield Patch online newspaper. Beau, who runs Castlewood State Park’s trails three to four times a week, organized a “Clean Up, Castlewood” event on July 28 and invited his Logan classmates to participate.

SUBJECTS NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Dr. Kenneth Reckelhoff is recruiting subjects for a study utilizing diagnostic ultrasound entitled, “Normative Evaluation of the Scapholunate Ligament during the Squeeze Test.” The study is painless and takes less than 10 minutes per subject. Participants will be scanned using a diagnostic ultrasound probe while squeezing a grip strength dynamometer. Participants between the ages of 18-45 who have not had wrist pain in the last year, or prior wrist sprain, fracture, dislocation, surgery or arthritis will qualify for the study. Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, and Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study.

FINAL CHESTERFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MUSICAL CONCERT IS AUGUST 16 A FREE summer tradition (weather permitting, of course) concludes this week as the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce presents its final concert in Faust County Park on Tuesday, August 16 featuring Yessir. The concert and parking are free of charge. The park opens at 5:15 p.m. with pre-concert entertainment for children provided by the city of Chesterfield Parks Department and art projects courtesy of Chesterfield Arts. Affordable concessions are available. Concert goers can purchase soda, beer, wine, water, brats, hot dogs, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, popcorn, candy, snacks, Sheridan’s frozen custard and more at the Chamber’s concession stand.

Seating is comfortable and informal so bring blankets and lawn chairs and put on your dancing shoes. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. and end by 9 p.m. Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs has continued its active community involvement this summer as one of the corporate sponsors of this summer’s concert series.
