April 25 – May 7, 2011 LOGAN GRADUATES 89 NEW DOCTORS OF CHIROPRACTIC AND 33 MASTER’S DEGREE STUDENTS AT APRIL 23 COMMENCEMENT IN THE PURSER CENTER Logan College of Chiropractic held its 164th commencement for the degree of Doctor of Chiropractic on Saturday, April 23, 2011 in the William D. Purser, DC Center on the Logan campus. Charles Feltmann, the behind-the-scenes director of graduation planning, reports that 89 candidates received their doctorate degrees.

Also, 33 students received their Masters in Sports Science and Rehabilitation degrees from Logan. The colorful ceremony featured on-stage flags from countries represented among the Logan student body and the academic hooding of each graduate. Logan President George A. Goodman, DC, FICC, and other college officials led the ceremony. John L. Gutweiler, PhD, professor in the Logan Basic Science Division, served as master of ceremonies. The commencement speaker was Professor Gerard W. Clum, DC, past president of Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, Calif.

Conrad M. Taylor, who graduated summa cum laude (3.88 GPA or better), delivered the valedictorian address.

Thirteen other graduates were also recognized with special academic honors. They included: magna cum laude (3.4 GPA or better) honorees Daniel A. Brink, Kathryn E. Baker, Luke A. Bennett, Bonnie E. Davis, Emily M. Barks, Ian P. Ahearn, Alyssa J. Schneider, Bradley T. Zinkel, Kathryn E. Weessies and Lena G. Haggerty. Cum laude (3.6 GPA or better) graduates included Brettany L. Hummert, Nicholas S. Curry and Trenton S. Stevens. Graduating students who made the Dean’s List included: Ian P. Ahearn, Kathryn E. Baker, Emily M. Barks, Luke A. Bennett, Jason G. Jason Biondo was the recipient of the $1,000 Dr. Al Chamberlin Student Doctor Award presented by the Logan Alumni Association.

A number of 50+-year Logan alumni attended the graduation weekend activities. Logan’s 49th Awards Presentation was held on Friday, April 22 at a special breakfast in the Purser Center.

McMurray, Student Services Department Awards.

Health Center Achievement Awards were presented to Ian Ahearn, Carson Aune, Jason Biondo, Thomas Eberline, Andrea Hoglen, Lorie Lofquist, Michael A. Preneta, Dolphus A. Thacker III and Jeffrey M. Williams.

Also, 19 graduates were surprised to learn that their parents, families, significant others or loved ones had purchased inscribed bricks in their names to honor their graduation from Logan. These bricks have been imbedded on the George A. and Elizabeth A. Goodman Plaza located just outside the Purser Center on the upper campus.

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM REGISTRAR For all students who are eligible to sit for the September 2011 National Board exams -- your funds will need to be paid to the National Board in late June. Please make sure that you budget for these National Board exams out of your Summer 2011 Financial Aid funding. The National Board only accepts Money Orders or Certified Checks – NO CREDIT CARDS or personal checks! The fees for the March administration of the exams for Parts I, II and III was $535; Physiotherapy was $245; Acupuncture was $600; and any retakes of individual subjects were $220 per subject. You can only retake a maximum of two (2) subjects. If you fail three (3) or more subjects, you must retake the whole part at the full price. The registrar cannot guarantee that the fees will remain the same or if the National Board will raise the exam fee. That information is not yet available.

The funds for the November 2011 Part IV exam will be due August 9, 2011. Total cost for that exam in May was $1,235. There is no way to know if this fee will remain the same or increase. That information is not available yet. Please make sure you budget appropriately from your Summer 2011 funding to cover the cost of this exam. Let the registrar know if you have any questions. 4th ANNUAL JOSEPH W. HOWE ORATION IN DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING IS MAY 26 On Thursday, May 26 from 9:15 to 11 a.m. the Logan Department of Radiology will host the 4th Annual Oration in Diagnostic Imaging honoring the numerous and outstanding contributions of Dr. Joseph W. Howe, a member of the department faculty. The Oration is scheduled in the William D. Purser, DC Center. The Oration will be delivered by Victor Tong DC, DACBR, a 1979 Logan graduate and chiropractic radiologist who was the first trainee to complete a radiology residency under Dr. Howe at LACC. Dr. Tong’s lecture is titled “Forgotten Roles of a Radiologist.” Faculty, interns and students are welcome to attend.

SUBJECTS STILL NEEDED FOR RESEARCH STUDIES Melissa Engelson, DC, a resident in the BIOFREEZE® Sports & Rehabilitation Center, and Danielle Spath, DC, MS, CCSP, assistant director of sports and rehabilitation, are recruiting subjects for a research project entitled, “Effects of Lumbar ROM Exercise on Multifidus Cross Sectional Area of Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Low Backs.” Participants will take part in a six-week trial of Lumbar ROM exercise. Expected duration of the exams will be approximately one hour (initially) and 10 minutes (follow up). Participants with or without low back pain between the ages of 18-55 not currently receiving treatment may qualify for this study.

Dr. Dennis Enix, DC, MBA, is currently recruiting subjects for a research study to examine proprioception and postural control in individuals from the ages of 20 to 80 in an attempt to stratify how these factors change with age. This study is in collaboration with the Saint Louis University Department of Neurology and Psychiatry.

Anyone who is interested in participating in this study should contact the Research Division in room S118.

Extra credit may be available for students from some instructors.

OTHER NEWS FROM IN AND AROUND THE CAMPUS Chabha Hocine-Tepe, director of the Learning Resources Center, will be presenting at the 2011 MOBIUS Annual Conference, June 7- 9 in Columbia, MO. Topic: Using Outreach Initiatives in Building Bridges – Sharing a library experience; the topic will explore different venues and creative approaches used by libraries to reach out to their users to identify their needs. What works and what doesn’t when promoting information literacy, social networking, and library services? Chabha will be joined by Laura Rein, LRC dean, Webster University; and Karen Robinson, reference librarian/SISLT, Thomas Jefferson Library, University of MissouriSt. Louis.

The Learning Resources Center has also announced two products: the first is for consideration and the second was added to the current resources. Primal Pictures is for consideration: it’s an interactive 3D animated human anatomy for clinical practice, research, and teaching. It’s the ultimate online anatomy reference. Faculty and students are invited and encouraged to try both modules – Spine: clinical & Spine: Chiropractic- and provide us with feedback and recommendations to help us make the best selection. Primal Pictures is on free trial base till May 15. MURALS is the new Information Literacy tool recently added: It’s an online library user guides that explain how to locate and use many library resources. It can be accessed anytime: in the library, at home, or remote location. It has visuals with audio narration. The instructional online video modules quickly show how

to use databases such as EBSCOhost, search engines, encyclopedias, governmental resources, ready reference, career guidance, college directories, news media, specialty resources and many others. Once these tutorials are completed, please take the quiz and get your Information Literacy Certificate.

LOGAN HEALTH CENTERS IN THE COMMUNITY April 27: Logan interns will present a lecture on low back care and offer complimentary postural screenings for seniors at Cardinal Ritter Senior Services. This is the second in a series of two lectures.

April 30: Logan interns will provide complimentary postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings for participants of the St. Louis Regional Foster and Adoption Appreciation Committee Resource Fair.

April 30-May 1: Logan interns will provide an informational booth for athletes of the Chesterfield Athletic Association. Information will include general information about the spine and chiropractic care, backpack safety and information about other bones/joints in the body.

May 1: Logan interns will provide complimentary postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings for participants of the 2nd Annual Be Deliciously Alive Expo at Gold’s Gym in O’Fallon.

May 1: Logan interns will provide complimentary blood pressure screenings and information about chiropractic care for participants of the Shape Up, Parkway/Missouri Shape Up to Live Fit Event at Parkway West High School.

May 3: Logan interns will provide a lecture about back safety and ergonomics for employees of Alexian Brothers. This is the first of two lectures this week in order to ensure the lecture is available to employees working different shifts.

May 3: Logan intern Sharonrose Samelak will provide a lecture about osteoporosis and arthritis for patrons at the St. Louis County Library-Thornhill Branch.

May 5: Logan interns will provide complimentary postural screenings for employees of Pulaski Bank.

May 6: Logan interns will provide a lecture about back safety and ergonomics for employees of Alexian Brothers. This is the second of two lectures this week in order to ensure the lecture is available to employees working different shifts.

May 7: Logan interns will provide complimentary postural, body fat analysis and blood pressure screenings for participants of the 7th Annual Walk Run ‘n Roll Resource and Health Fair. This event benefits the following ten organizations: The Center for Autism Education; The Center for Head Injury Services; Community Living, Inc.; Emmaus Homes; Giant Steps; Life Skills; Pathways to Independence; The Pujols Family Foundation; Rainbow Village; and Touchpoint Autism Services.

May 7: Logan interns will provide complimentary soft tissue work at the Crohn’s and Colitis Take Steps Be Heard Walk in Forest Park.

AS PUBLISHED PREVIOUSLY… Dates are now posted through the end of April for students to sign up for the two-day rotation at Southeast

Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Students will be able to shadow Dr. Scott Gibbs in surgery on day one and in clinical rotations on day two. Dates are available weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays. Students who are currently in outpatient clinic can receive clinic hours for their time spent at the hospital. For more information or to sign up, please stop by the BIOFREEZE Center.

The Health Center Department is currently looking for a work study student to fill the position of clerk, health center data entry, as soon as possible. The job pays $8.00/hour. The student hired will work 12 hours or less per week. The duties primarily consist of filing and will not include data entry.
