Autumn 2017

Welcome!

2

Welcome to our Foreign Rights Catalogue Autumn 2017 Dear Friends and Colleagues, for generations children have been learning to read with our Reading Lions series – and we are making sure to keep it that way! Therefore, we have completely revised our level system in line with the latest pedagogical guidelines. Featuring a parents’ section, informative facts for curious little ones, contemporary illustrations, playful details, and a lot more, the popular characters Picture Mouse and Reading Lion accompany children through fascinating stories, motivate them to read, and turn little readers into big booklovers (p. 24 – 29)! Have you ever dreamt of having a talking pet? Let’s be honest: Some of us still do! When Matilda and Joschi, the two inseparable cousins of a multi-generational house, called Marvellous Mansion (p. 3), discover that a racoon secretly moved into one of the washing machines of the ground floor launderette, chaos and fun ensue. The interloper quickly becomes friends with Matilda and Joschi as they go on daily adventures. Marvellous Mansion is the original backdrop for a warm-hearted new story time series. What do the devil’s son, the grim reaper, and a cat detective have in common? Well, all of them have their own bestselling middle grade series! Lucifer Junior (p. 42), Scary Harry (p. 46/47), and Winston (p. 48/49), are back to delight their growing fan base around the world. With her acclaimed works translated into 33 languages, Ursula Poznanski can be called a global phenomenon. In Aquila (p. 54), an exchange student experiences a blackout that turns into a nightmare. Following a story told in reverse and the hints left behind, readers are kept on tenterhooks as Nika unravels the mystery in the middle of the atmospherical scenery of Siena. And now, it’s your time to discover our many new books in Autumn 2017! Your Loewe Foreign Rights Team

•Seven-minute stories for reading aloud or independent reading •Entertaining illustrations by Nikolai Renger •Kids will love Henry the raccoon! •Children’s dreams come true at Marvellous Mansion!

NEW

There’s never a dull moment at Marvellous Mansion! Since Henry the raccoon moved into one of the washing machines in the café, hardly a day has gone by without Matilda and her cousin Joschi finding themselves caught up in some new adventures. Each individual story deals with one of the typical themes relevant to this age group: friendship, helping each other, having arguments, and feeling upset. In other words: The everyday chaos of family life! Except that Marvellous Mansion is home to multiple generations of families. The stories combine the events of children’s day-to-day lives with some favourite children’s fantasies: A talking pet which has previously lived “in the wild” and can take the children on proper adventures without their parents interfering. Marvellous Mansion is the backdrop to a series of wonderfully charming and original stories about an extended family – perfect for children aged 5 +!

Linnea Svensson Marvellous Mansion – A Raccoon Comes to Stay (Vol. 1) no. 8514, 17.5 x 24.5 cm, hardcover with spot varnish, colour illustrations throughout by Nikolai Renger, 128 pages, September 2017, € 12.95, 5 +

He doesn’t get far before he finds himself completely lost. Pai is sent from pillar to post, since none of the animals are really sure who this little fella is. After all, everybody knows pandas are black and white – and enormous. After a while, even Pai is no longer sure where he really belongs. And how is he ever going to find his way home if he can’t answer that question? This is not exactly the kind of adventure he had in mind... Nika solve the mystery of the lost two days?

LAST CHANCE. Nika looks in the mirror one Sunday morning, feeling rather hungover, to see this message daubed on the glass. Who wrote it? And what does it mean? Where are Nika’s house keys and her phone? Where’s Jenny, her flatmate? And why does she feel so terrible this morning – surely she didn’t have that much to drink last night? It’s only when she turns on the TV and sees the morning news that Nika realises it’s not Sunday at all – it’s Tuesday. Two whole days have gone by, and she has no memory of them. During those two days something terrible must have happened. But what? With Aquila, Ursula Poznanski has produced a true psychological thriller. She tells the story almost entirely in reverse, keeping the reader on tenterhooks until the very last page. Not until the shocking twist at the end of the book do we find out what really happened to Nika during those two lost days.

Bringer of Destiny

59

NEW

One day, when Kiera is just a little girl, a strange man slips her a mysterious old coin at the funfair. Years later, she comes across the coin while she is tidying up and cuts herself on it. From that moment on, everything changes: the enigmatic Phoenix and his brother Hayden turn up at Kiera’s school, and the arrogant Amy gets terrible acne all over her face – just as Kiera had secretly wished she would. Even Kiera’s best friend Cody starts behaving strangely. It’s almost as if Kiera can use the coin to change the course of fate. As a successful book blogger, Stefanie Hasse knows exactly what her readers like: a perfect blend of fantasy and romance, with an original protagonist, an exciting love interest (or preferably two), a dash of humour and plenty of suspense!

Creativity and Knowledge

More topical than ever before! •Short, self-contained chapters •There are currently over 50 million refugees in the world •Complex issues are explained in a clear and relevant way Asylum seekers, the refugee crisis, people traffickers, maximum limits – young people are being bombarded with increasing amounts of information. And many of them are finding it increasingly difficult to understand the complex issue of migration and the mammoth task of integration, and to form their own political opinions. Journalist Christine Schulz-Reiss explains how the phenomenon of political and economic migration has developed throughout history; how, whether, and why a country can integrate foreign migrants; how to comprehend the many tragic stories we hear about individual asylum seekers – and what all of this has to do with our own lives.
