OPENING HOURS PLEDGE AS SEASON DRAWS TO CLOSE
FINAL LAPS POOL manager Belgravia Leisure has pledged minimal disruption to opening hours at Loddon’s five pools in the final fortnight of the swimming season.
FLIPPING PANCAKES: Shrove Tuesday was observed across the Loddon on Tuesday ahead of Lent. Pancakes were the order of the day at St Augustine’s Anglican Church Inglewood where Janette Nixon tried her hand at tossing from the pan while (right) students at St Patrick’s School Pyramid Hill spent the morning in the kitchen making cakes and raising funds for the Catholic Church’s international aid and development agency Caritas.

The commitment comes as weekend patron caps were applied at Inglewood and Mitiamo is still opening only three or four days week. The company’s regional manager Kara Monaghan said Belgravia was confident there would be minimal disruptions for the remainder of the season that closes on March 14. Ms Monaghan said the return to school and university of lifeguards employed over summer “has disrupted their availability which in turn has had a measurable impact on the pool opening hours”. “That said, we are in a much stronger position than earlier in the season,” she said of the scramble by pool managers across Victoria to find enough lifeguards “Given we are beyond COVID lockdowns and Government restrictions and have the entire off-season to recruit, we don’t foresee the same staffing challenges as experienced by the industry this year.” Ms Monaghan said the 25-patron cap at Inglewood last weekend “allowed us to spread staff across multiple sites to allow the

facilities to open longer”. But she said the caps had not affected Inglewood and no patrons were turned away. While Loddon’s five pools - Inglewood, Mitiamo, Boort, Pyramid Hill and Wedderburn - are listed to open daily, Wedderburn was closed on Tuesday with confirmation still to come for this weekend. Last week, Wedderburn was closed Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday. Mitiamo did not open on Monday and is closed again today and Saturday while Boort is also closed today. Ms Monaghan said entry to Mitiamo pool remained free. Pyramid Hill is closing early this week. Meanwhile, the pool managers awarded the contract by Loddon Shire last September introduced cashless admission last Saturday. A statement that morning said the change was after recent break-ins at local pools. Ms Monaghan said: “Wedderburn, Inglewood, Boort and Pyramid Hill were subject to break-ins.” The thefts had been reported to police, she said. Loddon Shire has announced it will begin work on a new recreational space and swimming pool strategy this year. There have been local calls for government to fund country pools and communities to have a greater role in their management.
