Jye said it was an extra special achieve-

ment in 2022 in the competition region that stretched across most of Victoria’s top half.

“We were up against more than 100 butchers from such a wide area of country Victoria,” he said.

“To pick up four golds in the one competition is pretty amazing.”

HEN the green Falcon pulls up in the main street of any Loddon town, many will know the driver is always on a mission - a meeting, running the farm errands for supplies or just to chat and take an interest in what’s happening. Cramming 30 minutes into just five minutes is at times the modus operandi and it’s easy to get sidetracked.

That’s what happened in the main street of Bridgewater when said woman came to town for poultry feed, Got talking to others, headed back to car and key wouldn’t open door so across the road to RACV man Tim who quickly had the fault rectified ... pointing her in the direction of said correct green car a further 50 metres away. While our OTF special correspondent was quick to pass on this information, said offender wasn’t far behind and fessed up without being prompted.

E CAUGHT up with Ivan the upcoming centenarian at the weekend. Turns out, we have since been told, that Ivan is more than active for his age and goes for a daily ride on his scooter around Pyramid Hill where locals say he has right of way. At almost 100, it’s proper to wave him through!

OW talking about vehicles, roads and traffic, we hear many a Loddon farmer is cursing these rains falling at the moment and putting in the long hours to finish sowing their crops. One even relieved his son at midnight to do the graveyard shift until 5am - to finish that last paddock.

Basin rail ‘fresh doubt’

MORE red flags had been raised for the Murray Basin Rail Project, said Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh.

Mr Walsh said Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan told State Parliament budget hearings this week that her Federal Labor colleagues have made no commitment to the project’s delivery.

“Under questioning at Parlia-

mentary hearings on the 202223 State Budget papers, the minister worked hard to muddy the waters and continued to refuse to provide Victoria’s $5 million co-contribution for planning to fix Labor’s botched work.

“North-west Victorians deserve better than constantly being handed the scraps off the table,” Mr Walsh said of the stalled project.

A HISTORIC steam traction engine is poised to finally make its return to Inglewood.

The Cliff and Bunting engine that once powered Jones’ eucalyptus distillery has been conserved and restored by Museums Victoria.

But when it returns to the Loddon hinges on the eucalyptus distillery museum committee’s efforts to have a special annexe built.

Committee spokesman Murray Baud said funds had been raised and the permits obtained from Loddon Shire and Heritage Victoria.

The holdup, he said, was waiting for an available project manager.

Mr Baud said $150,000 had been raised, including grants with spending deadlines, to bring the historic engine back to the distillery on land managed for council by the committee.

Council has waived the building permit fee.

“We want to get on with it,” he said. “With a project manager, we can move to the next stage and go out to tender to construct the annexe. Then we’ll know if further funds are needed.

“But time is running out and we don’t want to lose the opportunity of this engine coming back to Inglewood.

1920s the steam workhorse was in Inglewood, where Alf Leech used it for contract chaff-cutting and road haulage During the 1930s, the engine was acquired by Ernest Jones for clearing leases in the State Forest stimulating regrowth of the Mallee scrub that was harvested for eucalyptus oil production and for harvesting the regrowth foli-

age. Later the engine was shifted to Jones’ eucalyptus distillery at Inglewood, where it was used as a stationary winch for lifting the ‘cooked’ eucalyptus leaves out of three in-ground distilling pits.

Further talks between the museum committee and Loddon Shire on project management of the new annexe construction have been held this week.

Bonding time for farm blokes A TIME to bond will be created for Loddon men with the first Men in the Bush gathering this month.

Dingee Bush Nursing Centre and East Loddon Lions will bring rural speaker Warren Davies to the event in what centre manager Kylie Smith says is an important step towards helping men bond after the COVID lockdown years.

“The idea has come through our new community engagement committee that includes a few members of the Lions club,” she said.

“We believe that while there are many groups for women to join, things have been a bit more sparse for the men and COVID was a bit of a dampener.

“It’s important for these guys to be able to meet up, have relaxation time and just have a chat. to be able to bond for their mental health away from, the farm.”

Kylie said Men in the Bush pointed to the important work of the community engagement committee.

“The committee gives us information and feedback on what the communities would like from us

and how we can help and reach out,” she said.

Warren, from Kyabram, will speak on resilience, persistence, determination, leadership and wellbeing and their relevance to all ages and communities drawn from his life experiences.

Men in the Bush will be held at the East Loddon Lions Den and is one of several community engagement events planned by the bush nursing centre this year.

Kylie said plans were also being made for a women’s pamper day with a date to be announced shortly.

THE State Government on Friday announced it would continue to support rural newspapers until December 31 with advertising. Premier Daniel Andrews said: “Local newspapers, radio and television outlets are vital to our regional communities, providing the range of voices and local information needed to make informed decisions.”

Next president ROBERT Condliffe will be the next president of Inglewood Lions Club. He will be installed at the changeover dinner on July 2.

Cases numbers THERE were 48 active COVID-19 cases in Loddon communities on Tuesday. State Government data showed 13 new cases. The total number of cases since March 2020 is 1296.

Growing a right royal occasion WITH flags waving and tantalising sausages sizzling on the barbecue, more than 100 people last Thursday celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth.

School children joined residents who had been in Boort’s Nolens Park seven decades earlier to celebrate the Queen’s coronation.

Adjacent to a tree planted in 1952, Boort District School Year 6 students Desiree Leerson and Jacob Malone were given the honour of using the silver spade to place a new tree in the ground.

The occasion’s importance was clear for the youngsters.

“It’s a very long time to be Queen,” said Desiree.

“Queen Elizabeth is a good queen,” said Jacob, with both agreeing Queen Elizabeth was a kind person, Paul Haw was present when the coronation tree was planted and helped Boort Tourism and Development organise Thursday’s Platinum celebrations.

“The community will look after this tree just as it has the tree planted 70 years ago,” he said.

Loddon Mayor Dan Straub, CEO Lincoln Fitzgerald, Boort Ward councillor Neil Beattie and Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh were among speakers at the tree planting ceremony.

Cr Straub said: “I take this moment to acknowledge the achievement of Her Majesty ...

Free waste disposal

Exhibition now open

Loddon Shire Council offers residents quarterly fee free waste disposal disposal via a voucher system at each of its Landfill and Transfer Stations.

The Shrine of Remembrance’s fourth travelling exhibition Changed Forever: Legacies of Conflict is at Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall until 26 June.

Four quarterly vouchers are included in the annual rates notice. Residents that do not receive a rates notice are advised to contact the relevant property owner for access to the vouchers.

Vouchers can only be used once and only one voucher can be used per transaction. Each voucher will be valid for three months to align with the financial year quarters.

Society cracks code on life of pioneers THE stories of 25 Wedderburn pioneers are now being told through QR codes placed on their graves.

Wedderburn’s historical records museum last week placed the codes on 24 graves at the town’s cemetery and one at Thomas Whyte’s Lonely Grave.

Visitors can now hold their mobile phones to these badges and receive a brief talking slide show detailing the life of the pioneers, including William Crisp and Joseph Morecroft.

Society secretary Alan Mulraney said: “At this stage the main focus of the QR code project is on pioneers that lived in Wedderburn prior to 1900 but once that avenue has been exhausted the next phase will be for people from 1900 to 1950.”

“The talking slide shows are linked directly to our website and you don’t have to go to the cemetery to see them,” he said.

“You will then see a list of the pioneers that have been QRd to date. Click on their name and you will see the talking slide show presentation. You can also print out a list of the pioneers along with a map that shows you where to find the gravestones within the cemetery.”

Mr Mulraney said installation of QR codes followed a suggestion by society member Irene Finch and approval of the cemetery trust.

Last week also marked a milestone with the museum team entering the 80,000th record on its digital database.

Changed Forever gives visibility to individuals swept up in war and its aftermath and explores the impact of global and civil conflict in changing lives and shaping contemporary Australia. Stories are shared with enthusiasm and hope, offering insights that may help bridge the divide between those who have experienced conflict and those who have not.

Ivan bowls a century

IVAN Vanderwall has experienced the trauma of hiding in haystacks from invading German soldiers in World War Two and the freedom of life in Australia.

He has lived through the Great Depression when the family dairy farm in The Netherlands was paid one cent a litre for milk and has known the joys to holding aloft countless trophies as a lawn bowls champion.

On Saturday, Ivan will celebrate his 100th birthday with family and friends in Pyramid Hill.

He will be joined for the centenary party by son Peter who has been in town for the past week, catching up in person with his father for the first time in a decade, and grandson Kai. Ivan came to Australia in 1957 and to Pyramid Hill in 1980.

“There was no life for me in The Netherlands ... it was time to leave,” he reflected last weekend on the decision to leave Europe.

“In the beginning, I might have gone back ... but in Australia I found quite a bit of freedom and some fantastic jobs.”

Ivan first worked in a quarry, then went at the Good Shepherd convent in Abbotsford and as a gardener with General MotorsHolden.

After four years, Ivan and his wife Marie moved to Sydney where he became caretaker gardener for a cathedral, convent and three schools. “Sydney was not an easy place to drive in.”

That freedom and his love of

farming and gardening as a child was to the fore. As a child, besides the dairy cows, the family worked about three hectares of ground growing potatoes and later grew tulips and gladioli.

Ivan was two weeks short of 18 when Germany invaded Holland in World War Two. When he turned 18 he was called up to serve in the Dutch Army and had five difficult years hiding from the Germans in haystacks, under manure pits, in cellars and other places including a dung heap.

Had he been caught, Ivan says

he would have been shot or sent as a slave in Germany. Ivan talks about the brutality, waste and suffering caused by war and says the world today is in a mess compared with earlier decades. “War ... that’s frightening”.

Ivan took up lawn bowls in Sydney and it was a passion that followed him to Pyramid Hill where he has taken out countless club championships and played at state level.

“Bowls is not just for old people ... it makes for good mind and exercise.”

He also has exercise out in the garden where this winter he has planted cauliflower, broccoli, kale and broad beans and keeps tending the grapevine for fruit after spring.

And Ivan remains independent with support from friends in the town and district nurses.

Friend Terry Wood says: “Despite multiple health issues over the years Ivan continues to live independently in his home where he still tends a vegetable garden and enjoys a game of scrabble.”

Saturdays always have Ivan on his scooter riding to the Victoria Hotel to place a few bets on the day’s horse racing.

For many years, Ivan also enjoyed fishing in the area.

Now during the week, quiz show The Chase has the Loddon’s latest centenarian hooked.

Ivan said that with retirement looming more than 40 years ago, he and Marie began looking for an affordable home in which to retire. “We looked to the country and came to visit Pyramid Hill.

We looked at two houses - the first we said no and the second we bought,” he said. “And I’ve never looked back” Ivan and Marie made many trips to relatives in Canada and Europe before Marie died in 1998.

The obligatory question for a centenarian is the secret to a long life. Ivan simply replies: “Life is a mystery.”

Case of the hanging gardens EAST Loddon Garden Club members were on trial last Friday.

They combined discovering new tips for growing flowers with the reality of 19th century court in Inglewood.

At the old court house, they were entertained with an Inglewood and District Historical Society re-enactment where member Marj Shay quickly became one of the accused and other members were seconded to the jury.

The garden club also met with Illona McEwan, of Inglewood’s Beeandiefarms, who spoke about her garden and bouquets.

“The beautifully presented arrangement Illona brought along on the day was a testament to the fabulous work she does,” said club president Christine Fitchett.

Members had refreshments at local cafes and lunch at Steve’s Empire State Hotel.

MALLEE MP Anne Webster was on Sunday announced a shadow assistant minister for the Coalition.

Dr Webster, who retained her seat at the May 21 election, will be shadow minister for regional development.

She said: “Today the Nationals leader David Littleproud called me to offer me the role of shadow assistant minister for regional development.

“I have humbly accepted this role in the shadow ministry, and I look forward to contributing to policy development and leadership through strategic development and investment in regional Australia,” Dr Webster said.

“As always, my focus remains the needs and interests of Mallee and I look forward to promoting the great opportunities in this region.”

Dr Webster had last week nominated for the Nationals’ deputy leadership but lost to NSW senator Perin Davey.

Within the shadow cabinet that does not include assistant ministers, the Nationals have six of the 24 member shadow cabinet – compared with five in the Morrison Cabinet – reflecting their larger proportion of the Coalition, to holding all seats and gaining a senator.

Meanwhile, latest data from the Australian Electoral Commission shows just 4216 Mallee votes remain to be counted.

The AEC has started declaring polls in electorates across Victoria and Mallee is could be finalised this week.

The Mallee declaration will take place in Bendigo, the electorate one of two in Victoria to have its AEC office in another electorate.

Jimmy goes from birds to platypus THE artist who brought life to birds on Wedderburn’s acclaimed Birds Eye View murals has now turned to creative hand to the platypus.

Jimmy Dvate has just finished a commission painting of the Hobart Rivulet platypus on a mural in South Hobart.

Locals raised funds for the mural on a cafe wall.

According to the latest Australian Geographic magazine, Dvate said: “It’s so special that these platypus are living less than 10 minutes from the middle of the city,” “I also had the privilege of spending a few hours with the star of the wall which

I’ll never forget. It was a real honour and privilege to get to spend a few hours in the rivulet with my first wild platypus. An unforgettable experience, and such a cool coincidence that it was also the same platy I used as reference for the mural.”

Dvate’s Wedderburn murals were officially unveiled last year with the centrepiece at the town’s Uniting Church featuring the yellow tufted honeyeater, variegated fairy wren, purple crowned lorikeet and blue-faced honeyeater.

Wedderburn’s mural committee is now raising funds to illuminate the murals at night.

Ambos’ spend gets two announcements

Birds digging holes ‘the size of tennis balls’ DESTRUCTIVE corellas are now causing havoc across several Loddon communities.

Within days of concerns for the health of riverbank gums at Bridgewater being raised last month, the protected birds starting taking to the croquet courts in Boort with greater vigour.

New Lakeside club president Carmel Allison said: “They are back with a vengeance.”

“You can get to within a metre of the corellas before they fly away,” she said.

The birds are now ignoring blue tapes strung across the court as a deterrent and digging holes Carmel says are “the size of tennis balls”.

Carmel and greenkeeper Ian Potter are filling holes every day and trying to protect hoop holes that have also been targeted by corellas.

“The damage they are doing is running the potential of a huge risk to players ... a ball could bounce on a hole, or off a loose hoop, and hurt someone,” Ian said. “Every hoop hole was damaged in 48 hours this week.”

A MELBOURNE construction company has been named to build a new ambulance station at Inglewood.

The State Government made the announcement last week - Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford in a media release sent to Inglewood organisations last Wednesday afternoon and then by Health Minister Martin Foley on Thursday, Richmond-based Bowden Corporation has been appointed to construct new multi-million-dollar ambulance stations in Hospital Street, Inglewood, and at Rochester.

Mr Foley said the new stations would each feature a three-bay garage for ambulances, two rest and recline areas for hard-working paramedics to recuperate, a fully equipped kitchen and improved security and car parking to make sure paramedics

are safe. Both ambulance stations were on-track to be completed later this year.

In her announcement, Ms Pulford said: “The project will involve knocking down the outdated buildings on the current Inglewood ambulance station site and constructing a new fit for purpose ambulance station on Hospital Street.”

According to Ambulance Victoria, vehicles and staff at Inglewood will move “into one of the existing buildings on the site” during demolition and construction.

The cost of the new Inglewood station was not provided but the Government said: “The Government has invested more than $249 million since 2015 to upgrade and rebuild ambulance stations to provide better working conditions for paramedics and ensure lifesaving emergency care is available.”

Growing solar network COMMUNITY Power Hub Loddon Mallee is bringing the clean energy initiative to local communities this month.

Driven by Bendigo Sustainability Group, the project aims to help community groups and businesses tap into affordable solar energy.

A meeting in Wedderburn next week will explain support available to connect community buildings, businesses and local facilities to the communityowned solar network.

The not-for-profit group has been working with communities on locally driven owned, clean energy solutions.

“This includes assisting groups to add solar to their facilities so they can save money on expensive power bills and contribute to the clean energy transition,” said president Colin Lambie.

“We’re passionate about this work, not only because we want to address the issue of climate change, but also to find collective solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this, we want to make sure that the solutions created are locally owned and as such benefit Loddon Mallee and its communities.”

Community Power Hub Loddon Mallee is funded by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of

the Victorian Government. “It’s all about taking that passion, knowledge and practical advice to communities across the region and assisting local groups to take up the opportunities that are available,” Mr Lambie said.

One of the presenters at next week’s Wedderburn meeting will be John McDonald.

He said: “Through our work we have found that whilst many of us understand climate change is a big issue that needs to be addressed, there’s a gap between talking about it versus making solutions relevant, practical and affordable,” “We’re on a mission to help as

many people and groups as we can to see what’s possible, navigate the complexities and find innovative ways to fund and install solar systems. All with the aim of increasing solar uptake, building by building community by community.”

The local solar push last week also saw Kooyoora Women’s Network launch a crowd funding appeal with the sustainability group to install solar on the food share van at Bridgewater.

That project will raise money to install solar panels, an inverter, cabling and trenching for the solar unit at the Platform 1 Hub at the former railway station.

“Due to some ongoing issues within the world and hobby, we, collectively as club members have had a meeting and voted, and have decided that this is the best situation for us and the club at this time. It means unfortunately that we cannot have run days like we have previously, this year.”

Pushing 21,000 with more to do ONE Loddon community has already completed 20,451 push ups on its way to raising money for the the mental health awareness campaign Push-Up Challenge in June, Boort’s Sherryn O’Flaharty said she had been overwhelmed with support that had seen the number of business and organisation teams jump to 14.

“We’re currently sitting on 86 participants with a total of 20,451 push ups completed to date. The donations sit at an amazing $2365, smashing our goal of $1000. At day six of 24, we can reach for the stars and aim for $5000 as a community.”

Among the teams are two groups from Boort District Health.

CEO Donna Doyle said: “Boort District Health are thrilled to be part of the community effort to raise funds and awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. It took little convincing to get our staff onboard with the push up challenge.

“We have a strong focus on good health and wellbeing at BDH and our staff are all acutely aware that when we walk in the door of the hospital each day for our shift, we are each of us dealing with something everyone else knows nothing about, yet we put all that on the hat hook at the front door in order to give the very best of us to our patients and residents,” she said.

“The reality is many staff or their families or close friends are unfortunately dealing with many stressors and struggles of their own and tragically more than one of us has been directly affected by suicide”.

“Only a week into the challenge and the comradery and the banter is abuzz. We are starting conversations, we are checking in on each other.

“There’s a healthy rivalry going on as we watch each other’s teams tally’s grow and it is terrific”.

Project builds irrigation resilience

BUILDING resilient irrigation businesses will be the theme of a Plan2Farm event in the Loddon this month.

Irrigated Cropping Council plans to start the conversations about business planning and building resilient farm systems at the Pyramid Hill lunch.

The council has been working with the North Central Catchment Management Authority to the implement the Plan2Farm project over the past 12 months.

The lunch is the culmination of the project showcasing key outcomes from the program and shares key principles that farmers can use in their own businesses.

Among case studies from the program are Doug and Tamara Perryman, of Boort.

Doug describes his farm as established but still developing after purchasing the main block in 2015 and deciding to improve the irrigation infrastructure to ensure that water could be used effectively.

The irrigation council says Plan2Farm was about helping farmers take a deep dive into their business and plan for the future.

Keynote speakers at the Pyramid Hill event will include investment manager Angus Ingram from Kilter Rural who will share insights into developing resilient irrigation businesses.

Farm business consultant Daryl Poole, of RMCG, will provide a seasonal water update and Paul Blackshaw from Meridian Agriculture will showcase farm businesses that are working towards resilient systems.

According to the council, Plan2Farm has allowed farmers to proactively assess their business and think about the future.

Key aspects discussed have included using water efficiently, developing irrigation infrastructure, budgeting and strong financial reporting, building a water portfolio to complement the seasonal cropping plans, and succession planning.

SHEEP THERE was a bigger yarding of 14,700 lambs, drawn out by rising saleyard prices last week and Monday’s public holiday which cancels the regular Bendigo market.

Quality was of a higher standard, with more lambs presenting as hard-fed off grain.

Demand from processors stepped-up, with buyers often engaging in sustained bidding to secure the best lines of export and domestic lambs.

Competition was strongest for heavy lambs over 26kg cwt and these were $10 to $15/head dearer.

Similar price lifts of $10 were evident for the best heavy trade lambs, however plainer domestic lambs that lacked consistent fat cover or were in long woolly skins were often only a few dollars dearer than a week ago.

Any well-bred lines of genuine store lambs were $6 to $10/ dearer.

Exporters paid to $300/head for an impressive line of extra heavy grainfed lambs estimated at around 38kg cwt.

Most export lambs sold from $240 to $280 at an average cost of 780c/kg cwt, noting there was sales above 800c for nicely weighted pens around 32kg cwt.

Heavy lambs 26-30kg cwt sold from $223 to $268, improving to averages of 820c to 840c/kg cwt.

Farm succession planning – The first of the four key questions – what do I own?

The starting point for farm estate planning is to determine: - whether assets are owned solely or jointly, - whether land is owned as joint tenants or tenants in common, and - whether assets are controlled via trusts rather than owned.

Sole or joint ownership? For most assets (shares, bank accounts, chattels – but not land), joint ownership usually means that the survivor automatically inherits when the first co-owner dies.

Co-ownership of land - joint tenants or tenants in common? When the first co-owner dies, land owned as joint tenants must automatically go to the surviving co-owner/s, whereas land owned as tenants in common forms part of the co-owner’s estate, and can be gifted in their Will. Determining whether co-owned land is owned jointly or as tenants in common can be achieved from purchase documents, or by conducting a title search.

Assets in a trust Assets in a trust are controlled but not owned, which means they cannot be gifted in a Will.

Instead, understanding how the trust is controlled, and transferring control to your intended beneficiaries, is usually the best option. Trusts will be discussed in detail in a future article.

Competition for mutton ramped-up to levels not seen for some time with several processors keen for numbers.

Sheep quality also lifted with some stand-out Merino wethers on offer. Prices were $10 to $25/ head dearer.

Heavy Merino wethers $240 to $255/head at an estimated cost of 760c/kg cwt.

Export buyers clashed for heavy crossbred ewes pushing prices from $220 to a top of $269 for estimated values of 660c to 690c/kg cwt.

All sheep were considerably dearer, including light mutton at $124 to $136.

Buyers needed 650c/kg plus to be competitive on the better lines of sheep.

So if they were diverted, would we miss them? I’d say with the utmost respect, probably not.

Would we lose normal passing traffic as a result? Yep but what percentage of those stop and give their business? That’s unknown until it happens.

Inglewood recently made Number 7 in the top 10 towns to visit in regards to its vintage and collectable shops. So that’s a huge drawcard right there.

If you are a tourist/day tripper, gold detector or just plain love visiting towns with significance, you are coming regardless of a bypass or not.

I believe the support should

The Laanecoorie Weir had not be built there is no way that any flood water could have been that high over this bridge.

However, once that storage had been flooded the old railway would have indeed been under water hence the reason both the railway line and the road were realigned.

At the confluence of the Loddon River with the Bet Bet Creek, which enters west of Eddington, the water was 20 chains wide, whilst at Jones’s Creek, at what is now known as Ankers causeway, the water was around 30 chains wide.

The flood waters were described as being 30 feet over the embankment from end to end before four chains of the western embankment could stand no more thus gave way around midnight on August 19. The deafening roar of the water

awoke the residents of Laanecoorie but all they could do was watch in horror as the water washed away part of the Janevale bridge whilst on the township side on the high bank the water lapped the window sill of Grissold’s Laanecoorie hotel whilst his nearby coach building works, the store of D. Anderson and another house suffered damage.

The farmhouse of a Mr Grylls became a casualty after two chains of the bank was washed out on the eastern side.

Repairs to the weir, which included raising the bank a further three feet, were completed by May 1910, the cost being somewhere between £600 and £1300, it then being capable of holding 760 million cubic feet of water Reconstruction work was carried out in 1936 when the weir was emptied so a bro-

ken valve could be repaired whilst during 1948 work commenced on reconditioning the 24 floodgates.

However as work could only be done when the water level was low it took nine years to complete.

Ongoing maintenance work, including the strengthening the clay puddled wall, continues to this day.

If you drive down Weir road and turn left over the bridge then left into Eddington-Laanecoorie road proceeding up to the top of the hill you will find Brownbill reserve road.

But if you choose to continue on you will find Ankers causeway and still further on another reserve on the Bet Bet creek, there being picnic tables at both sites but no toilets.

AS EARLY as October 1891 there were concerns that 10 fissures had appeared in the Laanecoorie Weir wall.

Many held fears the fissures could give way and the low lands between Newstead and Eddington would be inundated.

We complain of fake news today. Exaggerations and incorrect content is nothing new as the lowlands of Eddington mentioned could not get flooded as water simply cannot run up hill.

But still, crowds of people assembled at the weir in May 1892 to see if it could hold back the flood water.

The flood gates were wide open to allow the torrent of water to pass, however many of the residents of Newbridge and Bridgewater soon became quite agitated.

During December 1894 one William Williams, of Eddington, fell off the wall whilst fishing. He was quickly sucked towards the discharge value, however, Frank Heath, aged 23, the son of the caretaker, jumped in and caught Williams by the hair and dragged him towards the shore.

Heath was awarded a bronze medal for his act.

There were continual complaints about the damage done to the low lying land through silting and damage caused to McCoy Street, Eddington, this being evident in February 1896 when the weir was empty.

The flood of August 1909, which surpassed that of 1870, caused the McCallum creek railway bridge near Talbot to be swept away whilst a train was passing over.

Although several trucks fell around 40 feet, the two passenger cars were left hanging, they being held by the guardsvan.

This creek runs into the Tullaroop creek which in turn joins the Loddon River just upstream from the Bendigo-Maryborough road bridge at Eddington, the backwaters of the Laanecoorie weir.

The railway bridges over the Joyces Creek and Jim Crow creeks, on the Maryborough-Castlemaine railway line were damaged, the former being under six feet of water.

These two creeks also flow into the Loddon River.

Walsh sees key regional role for manufacturing revival

THERE’S a renewed push to capture new opportunities in manufacturing and drive alternative career paths in regional Victoria as part of Australian Made Week this week.

Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh said Victoria was once a powerhouse in Australian manufacturing, but shortages of agriculture chemicals, machinery parts and PPE through the pandemic are driving home the desperate need to reduce Victoria’s reliance on the global supply chain.

Mr Walsh, who is leader of the Nationals, said regional Victoria was in prime position to host new and expanded manufacturers, but that government support will be crucial to kickstarting the revival.

“Disruptions to the global supply chain in the pandemic have driven shortages and price rises in goods

that are crucial to the daily operation of our hospitals, farm businesses and manufacturers,” Mr Walsh said.

“While Labor has been cutting spending for trade and global engagement, jobs in Victorian manufacturing are plummeting.

“Three decades ago, manufacturing employment accounted for about 17.2 per cent of our state’s jobs market. By the end of August 2021, that had sunk to 8.4 per cent.

“A shift in focus to bring manufacturing home is needed to reduce our reliance on other countries for daily essentials, while also creating new career paths for local people.”

Australian Made Week (June 6 - 12) is a reminder to support local growers and makers. It’s even more important here in Victoria – the state hit by the nation’s longest lockdowns.

Many small businesses are still reporting they are struggling to recover and rebuild – both financially and in terms of staffing.

Mr Walsh said government could play a leading role in creating more opportunities to buy ‘Australian Made’.

“Our vision is for Victoria to once again be the engine room of Australian manufacturing,” Mr Walsh said.

“A Liberals and Nationals state government elected in November will establish the $2.5 billion Bringing Manufacturing Home Fund, with $1 billion specifically quarantined for regional Victoria. It’ll focus on areas of strategic importance, including food, fibre and beverages, rare earth and mineral processing, and medicines or PPE to ensure Victoria continues to recover and rebuild from the devastation caused in the pandemic.”

Ritchie takes early lead PYRAMID Hill Golf Club held first round of the championships on Sunday in very difficult weather conditions.

The winner of the day was Dave Mann with a nett of 73 and runner up was James Ritchie with a nett of 75.

There was no nearest to the pin and the jackpot on hole 16 has increased to over $200.

The leader in A Grade championship after the first round is James Ritchie (84), followed by David Mann (85).

The leader in B Grade is Matt Scott (95) followed by Tony Mullins (99).

The leader in C Grade is Blake Gibson (112), followed by Jed Stewart (125).

The next two rounds of the championships will be played on June 19 and 26.

This weeks event will be a four-ball best-ball with a draw for partners

Hoons rip up 16th fairway POLICE are investigating damage at Boort Golf Club overnight Friday.

Club member Andrew Kane said: “The damage occurred on the 16th fairway where there is a gap in the fence behind the green, big enough to drive a vehicle through off the Wychitella road.

“They drove down the middle of a fairway and did some wheelies about 100 metres from the green.

“The damage will grow over by the end of the season and recover, but it was disappointing they felt it was something they thought they can to do a facility that relies so heavily on the hard work of local volunteers.”

Mean stamp comes with heavy toll BRIDGEWATER has stamped itself as possibly the only threat to Loddon Valley ladder leaders.

The Mean Machine on Saturday achieved a result rarely seen - defeating Mitiamo at John Forbes Oval.

While the Superoos were down some key players, including defender Luke Lougoon, Rick Ladson’s cohort left no doubt as to their potential at the business end of the season.

Bridgewater had the edge in the first term, a strong defence forcing Mitiamo’s forwards into making costly goalfront errors.

And the second term was no better, wind bursts and pressures again sending shots for goal awry and Miti trailing by 15 points at the main break despite having four more scoring shots.

Bridgewater’s cause was also hampered when Jacob Ellings left the ground in the second quarter with bone protruding

from his nose. Ellings, waiting for surgey on Monday, is expected to be out for six weeks.

The Mean Machine continued dominance in the third quarter, again pressure and wind working against the home side on the scoreboard, as Josh Martyn continued his way to another handy six-goal haul.

It was only in the final term that Mitiamo made headway and the efforts of Nicholson, Turner, Mowat and Nathan Twigg saw the Superoos find accuracy and outscore the visitors.

Bridgewater was left without an interchange bench for most of the last term, however, with Tim Wood knocked out and stretchered from the ground.

This left the Mean Machine without defence rotations that Mitiamo exploited.

game right up to higher sides. On Saturday, they held the Bears to a solitary goal in the third term.

Harry and Charlie Gadsden were again key players for the Bears while Andrew Gladman kicked three goals.

And Calivil, too, produced too little too late in the match against Newbridge.

first half. A wayward second term did not help Calivil, kicking 2.10 and it was not until the final quarter that they added respectability to the scoreboard.

Ryan Burt’s six goals for Newbridge saw him named the club’s best.

Jack Burns booted two for Calivil and picked up his team’s award for the day.

Undefeated at half-way mark PYRAMID Hill goes to the Queen’s Birthday weekend break as the only undefeated Loddon Valley side.

After an even opening term, 2-2-14 to 1-6 12, the Dogs pulled away and recorded an emphatic 100-point victory over Inglewood on Saturday.

Inglewood was “up and about” early and had more scoring shots in the opening term, however on a day heavily affected by weather conditions, they were made to pay for not posting more early scoreboard pressure.

The Bulldogs piled on 112 points to 14 in a lop-sided encounter after the first break.

To their credit the hosts fought to the end but the quality and depth of the Pyramid Hill outfit simply overwhelmed them.

Despite the ever-widening margin the visitors maintained focus, and pressure at the stoppages remained a priority. Adhering to the game plan meant more was scored in the second half than the first.

Eight players contributed to the score, with three players contributing three goals or more. It was an emphatic win by the visitors to have the Dogs on top of the ladder at the season’s half-way mark.

The reserves clash presented some early “symmetry’, with seven goals posted by Pyramid Hill in each of the opening two Terms.

In contrast to previous weeks the Bulldogs then “went on with it” after the main break and more than doubled the half time score. and Rowan Pollock extended further his lead at the top of thetable thanks to his doubledigit return.

Bad ball use strips gloss

Chisari goal breaks the ice against rampaging Blues DISAPPOINTED by its seven-goal defeat at the hands of Sea LakeNandaly, Donald has bounced back in emphatic fashion against Boort on Saturday.

Following the lead set by Geelong the previous night, Donald burst into fast, free-flowing football and set up the victory with a nine-goal to nil first term.

Of these nine goals, two each were booted by Leigh Burke, Ryley Barrack (relishing his break from defence) and Cooper Anderson, who was Daicos-like but sadly suffered a knock to the face and took no further part in the game.

The Blues’ running players ran amok early with wingman Cody Brooks, Ross Young, Rian McGough and Darcy Harrison setting up numerous forwards thrusts.

In the second quarter Leigh Burke added two more to his tally before finishing early with a game high of five goals.

Boort’s Levi Moss, Pat Bogers and ruckman Nathan Twigg battled hard all day without success, and it was Matt Chisari, who played his best game against the Blues, breaking the ice by kicking the Magpies’ only major for the half.

Donald coach Rohan Brown stressed the side must be relentless and ruthless and continue with forward moving handballs.

Aaron Schofield, enjoying his first senior game for the Blues’ this season, banged on two goals in the third quarter, and the creative Brody Haddow, Blake Grant, James Wall and Jordan Bates-Gilby were in everything.

At the final change the Magpies’ coach, Andrew Hawker, insisted his players minimise the visitors’ “running from behind”, a feature of its linking, sharing style of play.

Donald’s Blake Grant slotted two more for a personal total

of three, but not to be denied, the home side’s Jesse Muscatello also managed to kick two goals, his first being a 50-metre bomb.

Overall, it was a very impressive outing for the Blues, a game where there were contributors all over the ground. Boort, missing ever reliable defender, Keiren Wilson, can also take positives from the game, particularly after the first quarter avalanche.

AFTER a couple of successive losses the Redbacks needed to get back on the winners list to maintain a position in the top four.

This they achieved but not as easily as the scores may indicate in Saturday’s North Central league round.

Similar to the earlier season contest between the Redbacks and the Navies, the Charlton boys were up and about early with enthusiastic attack on the football and pressure on the Redback ball carriers.

The Redbacks took a while to settle but then inaccuracy in front of goal took some gloss off the work done to get the ball into the forward line and it continued until half time - 5.12 wasn’t the best return for the ball usage the Redbacks had.

Charlton had defended solidly but were unable to create scoreboard pressure by converting once they got the ball forward.

The second half saw an improvement in the Redback efforts in front of goal but the final result still saw a lot of lost opportunity to build a greater goal tally.

The Redbacks back six were solid all day and made life difficult for the Charlton forwards.

Adam Postle at full back took a couple of strong marks early and continued dour defence all game.

Tyson Webster and Mitch McEwan gave strong support and cleared most balls that cleared the Redbacks key half

back line of Jones, Winter-Irving and Guan.

Luke Holt with Darcy Jackson across the centre and on ballers Corey Lowry and Jaryn McKay found plenty of the football and drove the ball forward continually.

McKay capped a good display kicking three goals with support from Ike Holt and Danny Benaim in a forward pocket and full forward respectively who chimed in with two each.

Charlton were best served

by Bailey Kemp who marked strongly around the ground and when forward. Veterans Tim Hill and Aaron Walklate found plenty of football in defence and on ball respectively.

Both have been doing just that for a lot of years. Youngsters Pat Sait , Cobi Fitzpatrick andThompson rounded out the better players for the Navies. All displaying talent that will keep them in the senior side at Charlton for years to come.

In the reserves, the Redbacks moved into attack mode from the first bounce in this game and had the Navy Blue defence under pressure from the outset. An 11 goals to two first half saw the Redbacks in complete control.

With two dominant forward in Gerald Riley ( six goals) and Chris Hargreaves (four) the Redbacks always looked dangerous when in attack and probably should have kicked more goals given 21 behinds were kicked.

STRONG backing for a combined central Victorian junior football competition has emerged from Bridgewater.

Mean Machine president Gary Walters said the club would “support any change” after AFL Central Victoria last week announced a review of Loddon Valley, Bendigo and Heathcote league under 18s. He said the

current four-team Loddon Valley competition was not working.

“The Loddon Valley is in a sad situation with only four sides.

We need more competitive games and more teams to play,” Walters said.

“I am just concerned the review is a bit too late. Country footy is really struggling with not enough youth coming through.”

Walters said Bridgewater would support review options that see Loddon Valley and Heathcote leagues combine their junior competitions or a new two-tier approach that includes Bendigo and would be open to Maryborough Castlemaine and Goulburn Valley clubs.

Walters said it was vital for the future of country football for clubs to involve youngsters in the third tier but “it doesn’t mat-

ter what the age group is if there are no kids in the area.”

The call for change has also been backed by Inglewood with Blues president Chris Cohalan saying: “We need direction that’s moving forward ... it’s a stalemate at the moment.

“It’s got to the stage where something has to be done otherwise it’s the kids who are missing out.”

However, Cohalan said a two-

division league could create issues for clubs.

“Distance would be a problem.

If you’ve a home game and no juniors, the gate and canteen (takings) are down. You miss out on atmosphere ... it’s a strange day and feels different,” he said.

East Loddon Rams entered the Loddon Valley competition this year, drawing players from Mitiamo, Serpentine and Calivil areas.
