WATER PRESSURE COLIBAN’S PLEA TO LIMIT SUMMER USE

COLIBAN Water put out an urgent call for residents in Inglewood and Bridgewater to cut water use as temperatures spiked at the weekend.

Water was also carted to the two towns for the first time to Coliban’s treatment plant ahead of the weekend.

Inglewood residents Ken Stent and Ursula Smale were surprised when they started receiving text messages.

“We expect there will be power blackouts during a storm and they take time to repair,” the couple said.

“But to be told we’re short of water .... it left us gobsmacked.”

Coliban did not release details of usage in the two towns over the past month when tourist numbers traditionally jump and property owners spend time at their holiday homes.

However, Coliban Water general manager operations Julian Bull said: “The capacity for the Bridgewater Water Treatment Plant is 1.5 megalitres per day.

“This summer, poor source water made the job of treating water at the Bridgewater water treat-

ment plant more challenging.” he said. “Our plant continued to operate, but did take longer to treat drinking water for the Bridgewater and Inglewood communities, due to this poor quality source water.

“Asking the community to limit water usage, and our decision to cart water to the plant, ensured the community had a continued drinking water supply and that our water storage levels for these towns were maintained.”

Mr Bull said Coliban might ask the community to limit water use “from time to time due to plant maintenance or poor source water quality”.

“We do this to ensure the water treatment plant is able to continue the supply of safe drinking water, while dealing with these issues, particularly during hot weather like we experienced on the weekend,” he said.

“Efforts by the community to limit water use, combined with demand decreasing as the weather cooled after the weekend, meant the plant was able to catch up with demand and replenish our water storages.”

Mr Bull did not say how much water usage had decreased after the weekend appeal.

Libby’s scholarship success LIBBY Clymo has been named as one of seven tertiary students in Victorian dairy regions to be awarded a prestige Gardiner Foundation scholarship.

The Calivil teenager finished secondary education at East Loddon P12 College last year and will start the Bachelor of Physiotherapy course at La Trobe University Bendigo next month.

Libby says she was inspired to become a physiotherapist after tearing her ACL as a youngster.

She strives to improve health care access for farming communities, urging them to address discomfort promptly and return to work sooner.

Gardiner Foundation CEO Allan Cameron said the program encouraged students to return to Victoria’s dairy regions upon graduation or after gaining work experience. This ensures a diverse range of essential skills within these regions.

“More students from dairy communities obtaining skills and experiences in their chosen field of endeavour will help create thriving and vibrant communities where people want to live, work, and invest,” said Mr. Cameron.

Libby said: “Growing up in a farming community, it is not uncommon to hear farmers com-

plain of their ‘aching lower back’ or ‘kinked neck’ while not seeking further treatment “A large proportion of farmers are not properly educated about the impact of their work environments on their muscles and bodies,” Libby said.

“My hope is to empower farming communities by providing access to top-quality healthcare ensuring some of our hardestworking individuals are kept fit and pain-free.”

The seven scholarship recipients will receive $10,000 annually for three years to support costs associated with their studies.

VOLUNTEER firefighters took more than two hours to extinguish a 50-hectare grass and scrub fire at Fiery Flat on Tuesday. CFA units from Powlett, Berrimal, Korong Vale, Fentons Creek, Inglewood and Bridgewater, FFMV crews from Inglewood, St Arnaud and Bendigo and two helicopters helped fight the fire that is believed to have started from a harvester.

Burglary investigation POLICE are investigating a spate of burglaries at sporting clubs across the region. The latest was at Inglewood Golf Club. Police said other burglaries in recent months have been at Wedderburn, Korong Vale, Tarnagulla, Dunolly, Maryborough and Castlemaine.

Footpath war flares FRAGILE peace along the main street of Inglewood in the battle by some traders to display goods on footpaths against federal disability access requirements has been shattered.

Online critics this week took aim at Loddon Shire Council for enforcing rules in an outpouring of support for antique store owner Catherine Norman who last week closed her Brooke Street store to the public.

She claims the placement of goods near the kerb is impractical outside shops in narrow Brooke Street.

Mrs Norman has claimed that Brooke Street now had the appearance of not being open for business and that her trade had dropped since the council crackdown.

Council last year wrote to Loddon businesses about permits, fees and conditions as officers looked for consistent compliance in all towns.

A meeting called by Inglewood Development and Tourism after the compliance crackdown saw council officers tell traders they wanted to work towards consistency and not leave traders or council open to negligence claims.

Wellbeing director Wendy Gladman on Tuesday said: “Thirty-eight permit applications for street furniture have been received throughout the Shire, for items including advertising signs, goods for sale and outdoor dining. Most of these permits have been issued with some awaiting

Flood repair team arrives BLAZEAID volunteers have started helping Loddon farmers repair fences damaged in the summer storm floods.

The emergency recovery organisation set up base camp in Boort this week.

Camp co-ordinator Peter Ross said 20 farmers in the Boort, Wedderburn and Korong Vale districts had already registered for assistance.

He expects volunteers will be in the Loddon for at least a month.

Mr Ross said the Boort base camp had four trailers equipped with fencing repair and replacement equipment.

“We’d like to have at least 16 people based here in Boort to send full crews out with each trailer.”

One of the first farms with a Blazeaid crew on the job lost 5km of fencing in the floods. Estimates have put farm fences losses at more than 100km across the shire.

Blazeaid has also established a base camp at Goornong with co-ordinators calling for local volunteers to be part of the clean-up effort on farms.

Blazeaid assisted local farmers after the 2011 and 2022 floods in the Loddon when crews were based at Bridgewater.

Meanwhile, the Federal and State Governments on Tuesday announced a $105 million package for emergency roadworks in areas hit by the summer storm floods.

The Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements package also includes expanding the emergency recovery hotline and recovery support program and additional mental health and wellbeing support.

The support services will be available in Loddon Shire.

Wedderburn was the first community hit by floods on Christmas Day.

Hot day and wet month LODDON communities started February with rising temperatures and busy days at the shire’s five swimming pools.

Temperatures across many parts of the shire tipped over 40 degrees on Sunday.

The official reading at Charlton was 39.9 degrees.

The dry and warm start to the month was in contrast to January with rainfall recorded over much of the first fortnight.

West Prairie recorded its highest ever January daily figure when 79mm was tipped from the gauge on January 8 as the district headed to a 136mm monthly total. Readings have been recorded at West Prairie since 2011.

Other Loddon communities saw January figures more than triple the average.

January 3 and 8 had the heaviest rain-

falls for the month in Inglewood and Wedderburn. The monthly average of 28.4mm in Wedderburn was smashed with 132.2mm record, including 61.4 on January 3.

Boort had its heaviest fall on January 17 and finished the month with 86.2mm compared with the average of 25.4mm.

Mincha also had its heaviest drop of rain on January 8 when 48.6mm was recorded. The month’s total was 133mm.

There were heavy falls in Dunolly on January 3, 8 and 17 of between 25mm and 30mm and a monthly total of 106mm.

Charlton saw 89.4mm tipped from the gauge in January, well up on the 32.3mm average.

Roger finalist in state volunteer award WEDDERBURN RSL sub-branch president Roger Patterson is a finalist in the State Government’s Volunteering Awards.

He is one of six short-listed nominees in the volunteer leadership category recognising people who have shown exceptional volunteer leadership and influence in support of people, a community, group, organisation, or cause in Victoria.

Winners of awards in eight categories and the Premier’s Volunteer Champion will be announced during a ceremony at

Haystacks igniting COMMUNITY alerts were issued over the past week for two haystack fires in the Loddon.

CFA volunteers were called to a blaze that ignited in a haystack on O’Toole’s Road, Pyramid Hill, last Thursday.

A second alert followed a haystack fire near Raywood at the weekend.

The CFA says farmers should regularly monitor all haystacks for signs that the hay is heating up. “You can do this by using a temperature probe or a crowbar. It may, however, be more difficult to detect heat deeper inside the stack.

Other signs of heating include steam rising from haystacks, condensation or corrosion under hayshed roofing and mould growth in or on bales, unusual odours ... slumping in sections of the haystack,” the CFA says.

Laughter galore at stage table

BOUTIQUE performances by BBAC Theatre Productions are drawing laughter and applause in the new season of The Traveller’s Table.

The quartet of Heather Milley, Bradley Haw, Karen Haw and Fiona Hall have wowed audiences the last two Saturday nights with their interpretation of the Hugh O’Brien comedy.

With well-timed delivery of lines, audiences have instantly known the cue for laughter in the witty dialogue between staff and visitors at an outback motel where guests adopt the name and occupation from a business card rack and strike up conversation at the dining room table.

Heather plays the straight-batting receptionist Dora who sees through the charades and struggles to contain her own laughter as mis-matched business card names fail to match plans of some guests for the evening.

BBAC has put together a witty show that played to full houses in Yando and this Saturday moves to the Mysia War Memorial School.

The Traveller’s Tale lives up to its billing as being hilarious and fast-paced comedy.

KORONG Vale’s former citizens’ centre in among nine properties being sold by Loddon Shire Council.

The Allen Street building was opened in 1996 by State Government minister Tom Reynolds after land had been donated by Miss Madge Davis.

The centre had housed the town’s senior citizens’ club until is disbanded and locals say it was last used in 2016 when residents voted in the 2016 federal election.

The town was in the Murray electorate and saw Liberal candidate Duncan McGauchie top the vote of locals over the Nationals’’ Damian Drum who won the seat.

Submissions on council plans to sell surplus properties close at the end of February.

A BOOK chronicling the history of Scottish settlers and the pipe band at Pyramid Hill will be launched in April.

The historical society had postponed during COIVID original launch plans for the book compiled by Helen Stephens.

Secretary Cheryl McKinnon said the launch during a special Scots day would be part of the Australian Heritage Festival.

And the day will also celebrate the century of Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall.

The hall honouring local residents who served in World War One was officially opened on April 22, 1924, and has become the town’s community event hub.

Future visions on agenda

IDEAS for the future of Serpentine will be on the table at a meeting on Sunday to begin the review of the district’s community plan.

The town’s community planning committee was revived late last year with president Will Hooke and secretary Emma Smith excited residents that will have the chance to review the existing blueprint for the future.

“The community is very much what the conversation is about, discussing ideas that could be town beautification, more walking

paths linking the town to the Loddon River and Serpentine Creek or whether we need a playground in Judkin Park,” Will said.

“We are really encouraging people to come with as many ideas as they can and ideas big or small.

“The community plan is how we can feed information into (Loddon Shire) council on what we want in coming years.”

Emma said: “The community plan gives our residents a voice.”

“We would love to talk about making the river and creek more accessible for people to enjoy,” she said.

Will also expects the meeting to start conversations on what the Serpentine district will be like in the future.

“Longer term, we don’t want to be a suburb of Bendigo but a town and district for families. And with more young families, we might have an under 18 football side again in the future,” he said.

WEDDERBURRN Gold Detector Jamboree organisers are tipping another big crowd when diggers descend on the town next month.

Event organiser Karen Fazzani said the March long weekend jamboree had received renewed sponsorship from Inglewood and District Community Bank and Minelab.

Karen said the Saturday would include a monster town garage sale and entertainment at night from Super Sound Group DJ. And helping the organisers will again by Wedderburn Lions Club with refreshments on sale at the Hard Hill jamboree site.

Karen said the weekend would also be a chance for people thinking about taking up detecting to experience special demonstrations of the latest equipment being used by gold hunters in the area.

Signal falters just metres from mount transmitter THE Mount Moliagul phone transmission tower has become a sentinel of poor signal for volunteer firefighters and residents.

Rheola brigade captain Phil Vernon has become frustrated with Telstra’s slow action to a problem he says has hindered connectivity for 12 months.

“Everything was working perfectly for mobile phones and internet and now it (the signal) keeps dropping out,” he said.

“You ring up Telstra and get a different story every time.”

Mr Vernon and district residents shared their frustrations at an impromptu meeting in the former Moliagul school last week.

Resident Colleen Fogarty said: “I now drive 45km to have a coffee and get an internet connection.”

Bev Cain, who contacted the Loddon Herald when the Dial Us In campaign launched three weeks ago, said: “They are charging us for a service they can’t deliver.”

Mr Vernon said poor connectivity had seen the area without mobile connection for four days over Christmas as storms and floods ravaged the Loddon.

“There are a lot of dead areas and we have lots of missed calls ...

“I’ve called Telstra and wasted an hour of my life. This has been going on for months ... they say

Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinkler said: “We’ve been working to fix some issues that have been affecting our sites that service Moliagul and Laanecoorie and we’re sorry for any impact this has had on our customers.

“We know how important communications are for regional communities and we have plans in the pipeline to upgrade both these sites by mid-year, to deliver faster speeds and higher capacity for customers.

ity is not just a Telstra responsibility. It’s a challenge that must be shared between Federal, State and Local governments and with providers like us and other mobile carriers.

“We continually investigate new opportunities to further expand our mobile coverage, including co-investment opportunities such as the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program and Regional Connectivity Program.”

The frustrations around Rheola, Moliagul and McIntyre come in the same week that Optus services in Inglewood have been down for hours at a time.

COUNCILS could fund new telco towers to boost mobile phone signals and reduce blackspots.

A Telstra spokesman said local councils would often commit to partially funding a new tower, along with investment from Telstra and the Federal Government.

But Loddon Mayor Gavan Holt said this week councils “should stick to the knitting and deliver services they are directly responsible for”.

“Councils should not be distracted by other areas that are a responsibility of someone else.”

Cr Holt has previously highlighted instances were governments have shifted funding responsibility onto local government.

The State Government caps the annual rate increases for Victorian councils. Last year’s resident shire satisfaction surveys highlighted roads as a major issue for Loddon communities.

Mallee MP Anne Webster last week said residents unhappy with connectivity could speak to stakeholders, including the council.

Super displays and amazing art will headline second show

OUTSTANDING works by top Victorian painters will be showcased in Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall when the town’s second Major’s Vision art show opens next Friday.

Progress association president Drew Chislett will officially open the exhibition and competition at the start of its seven-day run with visitors to the town again expected to boost local businesses.

Show organiser Terry Wood said there had been strong interest from the Victorian arts community.

“Our show is young but is quickly building a reputation for

experienced and aspiring artists to showcase their works,” he said.

“The calibre of our competition judge is also stamping the show as a must for many artists.”

This year’s judge will be the internationally-renowned Terry Jarvis, of Bendigo.

Terry will give a demonstration of his craft on February 18 between 10am to midday while indigenous artist Kevin Williams to will give a demonstration between midday and 2pm.

Kevin is also exhibiting his art for during the show. Boort’s Paul Haw will have an exhibition of Aboriginal artefacts.

“And we’re making it easy for visitors to come to town with a a complementary bus available to meet the morning train from Bendigo and deliver visitors back to catch the return train back to Bendigo,” Mr Wood said.

“The bus will be available to take visitors to the Pyramid Hill if desired.”

Pyramid Hill Historical Society museum next to the Memorial Hall will open all days of the show from 1pm to 3pm.

“We’re very lucky to have such accomplished artists adding their support and presence to the show and we hope to continue building a successful event.”

Consult earlier, recommends commissioner THE FEDERAL Government has backed key recommendations that call for better community consultation in renewable energy infrastructure projects.

The report by Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner Andrew Dyer came just days before a protest in Canberra on Tuesday where farmers vented against the Government’s renewable policy rush.

Mr Dyer’s report to improve community engagement has recommended: Increasing early local collaboration; Revising planning and approval processes to be more transparent and streamlined when it comes to community feedback; Motivating developers to ensure best practice engagement; Improving complaints handling; Keeping communities better informed on energy transition goals, benefits and needs; Equitably sharing the benefits of the transformation; and Reducing unnecessary community en-

gagement (where infrastructure will not ultimately be located) by improving the way project sites are selected.

Clean Energy Council chief policy and impact officer Arron Wood said: “Stronger community engagement is critical to successful development of renewable energy projects and meeting Australia’s commitment to 82 per cent renewables by 2030, and we welcome the release of this report.”

The Government says it will accept in-principle all of Mr Dyer’s recommendations.

“The review recognised the work that is already being implemented by all levels of government to address community expectations,” the Government said.

Passing of centenarian CENTENARIAN Darby Illingworth will be farewelled at Calivil today after his passing last month at the age of 101.

The former World War Two serviceman had been in care at Bendigo in recent years but retained connections with the district.

Darby had been a premiership player and president of the Calivil Football Club and was heavily involved with Bendigo Legacy.

A long-time Freemason, Darby had received a 70year jewel marking his membership of Masonic lodges in the district.

The retired farmer passed away on Australia Day, just four weeks after turning 101.

Daughter June recalled Darby’s war-time experiences in her address at Calivil last Remembrance Day.

Dipping into rural careers AGRICULTURAL scholarship winners from North Central region schools have been part of a networking and careers immersion day.

The students are participating the 21st Century Careers in Agriculture project through North Central LLEN, a collaboration with the North Central Schools network.

They have been recognised by their schools as leaders in the academic or practical side of agriculture.

Former Wedderburn resident and Nutrien agronomist Hayden Coombes took students on a tour of the the company’s Bendigo office and merchandise centre last month.

Hayden emphasised to students that developing relationships with growers and listening was key to successful agronomy.

Nutrien then provided a careers panel which included Hayden Coombes, Teagen Welsh (Boort manager) and Candice Cordy (Kyneton manager).

Each panel member had a diverse career journey but they all concurred about the importance of being punctual, enthusiastic, asking questions and taking opportunities.

Scholarship recipient Ned Zagame from Charlton College said he learnt about the different ways young people can get into

“This scholarship initiative in partnership with Nutrien Ag is a fantastic example of schools and industry working together to support career pathways for local students.”.

The 21st Century Careers in Agriculture program is funded through the Department of Education’s Sustainable Schools in Agriculture Fund.

Top vet issues summer pinkeye alert LIVESTOCK producers need to keep informed and anticipate animal health issues before they arise, according to Agriculture Victoria senior veterinary officer Jeff Cave.

Dr Cave said the risk of pikeye was one condition farmers should watch for in summer.

Pinkeye is a highly contagious, painful and debilitating disease that can severely affect animal productivity.

“With low stocking rates and abundant spring growth some properties have plenty of long grass, and recent rain events have increased fly populations, both these factors increasing the spread of pinkeye,” he said.

“The summer season brings increased sunlight and dust, which can make the eye more vulnerable to the disease.

“Pinkeye usually occurs in young cattle in their first summer. After this initial infection, cattle develop immunity to the disease but may remain carriers of the bacteria, Moraxella bovis, which potentially can lead to future outbreaks in following years. The clinical signs of pinkeye include clear and watery tears, signs of irritation, an aversion to sunlight, reddening and swelling of the eyelids.”

SIX bales of fleece from July-shorn hogget ewes grazed at Woodstock have been the first to go under the hammer at Elders’ new multi-million dollar receival centre.

Bill and Nick Punton saw six bales of 18.5 micron wool sell for 1101 cents a kilo when the first auction was held at Ravenhall, in Melbourne’s outer west, a fortnight ago.

Bill, who has been an Elders client all his farming career, said half of the 2023 clip had been sold at the first sale. ““We had 64 bales all up and every one sold. There was a bit of pressure when we were first to go under the hammer.”

Nick said the fleeces from the family’s Woodstock and Shelbourne properties had good length and had tested well before the sale.

“We had always planned to sell in February,” Nick said.

Bill said the second half of the clip would go under the hammer at a future auction.

“They’re forecasting a lift in prices so we will wait and see how that goes.”

The Puntons, who are regular buyers of rams from Erroll Hay’s Kamarooka Park Merino Stud, were also the first to make a delivery to the Ravenhall facility.

The first in the world, the Melbourne warehouse is moving wool bales using Autonomous Guided Vehicles.

Elders Bendigo wool manager Adam Millard said the first fleece sale had achieved a good price.

Adam said. “Buyers are over the moon with the new facilities - they can buy, order and have it ready to go a lot quicker.

“It’s the largest investment in wool selling in 30 or 40 years.”

Pair put in handy SHEEP AND LAMBS dozen with service TWO Loddon Landcare volunteers have been praised for their service afterr each notched up 12 years on the local network’s committee.

Network co-ordinator Will Samson said the contributions of Chris Rothacker and Colleen Condliffe were a display of commitment to environmental stewardship.

Colleen is currently serving as the network’s president.

“Their enduring efforts have played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the organisation’s mission to preserve and enhance the ecological health of the Loddon Plains region,” he said.

“Colleen, who has served as president for the last two years, has been a driving force in steering the Loddon Plains Landcare Network toward new heights.

Her leadership has brought about innovative approaches to conservation and sustainable practices within the organization. Colleen’s influence has been particularly evident, ontributing significantly to the network’s positive trajectory.”

Will said that together with Colleen, Chris had spearheaded initiatives aimed at conservation, sustainable agriculture, and community education.

“Colleen, with her expertise in

farming and local governance and Chris, known for his farming and community involvement in the Boort/Mysia area, have both been an invaluable asset to the Loddon Plains Landcare Network.”

The pair’s 12-year journey within the Loddon Plains Landcare Network has been instrumental in steering the organisation towards new accomplishments, Will said.

“Their combined expertise in farming, local governance, and community involvement has made Colleen and Chris invaluable to our network.

“Beyond their professional accomplishments, they’ve played pivotal roles in fostering a strong sense of community within our organisation.

“Their ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement, coupled with Colleen’s impactful presidency, exemplifies the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on the health and sustainability of our natural surroundings.”

Will said the network hoped the voluntary service of Chris and Colleen over the last 12 years would inspire other people to be part of the the Landcare movement across the Loddon.

THERE was a similar supply at Monday’s Bendigo market but there was issues on the demand side today which resulted in a lot of lambs and sheep coming back by $10 to $20 per head.

Two or three domestic orders didn’t operate and export demand was more subdued with a key northern buyer much quieter and not dominating on heavy stock like usual.

The weaker trend hit all lamb categories but there was still some solid outcomes for certain types of stock.

The best tradeweight lambs with shape still sold OK, as did some of the heavy export lambs which were not overly big.

It was obvious today that export buyers did not really want to go above $255 per head regardless of weight. And there was a lot more weight in the export run, with the heaviest lambs estimated up around 38-40kg cwt.

Overall the market was erratic and difficult to follow at times, with buyers generally trying to purchase processing lambs under 700c/kg cwt. Store and light lambs were cheaper with less restocker activity.

Just two pens of extra heavy shorn lambs sold above $260 to a top of $264/hd. Most lambs over 30kg cwt from $206 to $250, the average cost still hovering around 700c/kg cwt but with sales down to 660c/kg.

All the other major trade and heavy lamb categories recorded

averages below 700c/kg, most trending between 660c to 690c/ kg cwt. In dollar terms the 2630kg cwt crossbred lambs $174 to $218; the 24-26kg heavy trades $162 to $185; and the 22-24kg medium trades from $148 to $170.

There was plainer trade lambs, including unshorn sucker types in long wool, which sold in the low 600c/kg price range.

Merino lambs were cheaper and were tracking under 600c/ kg cwt.

The quality of the light lambs was mixed and some nicely shorn small crossbred lambs still sold strongly in places, but average results were cheaper. Most light lambs showing a bit of frame from $70 to $130/head.

There was a noticeable pullback on heavy mutton with all but one pen of heavy ewes selling under $100/hd. One bigger line of heavy Merino ewes in a skin topped at $102. Heavy crossbred ewes $75 to $97 in an estimated range of 230c to 270c/kg cwt.

Lean trade and light sheep held their value better at $40 to $70 for most, some of the lightest mutton still hitting 300c/kg cwt.

It meant the majority of the yarding sold in a compressed price of $50 to $80 regardless of weight.

Winner’s history not always true Sir, Here we go again. Cr Gavan Holt asserts that Pat Cummins, in using his position as Australian cricket captain to support changing the date of Australia Day, is guilty of “... something at which all Australians should take umbrage”.

Really? How then can it be acceptable for you to use your position as mayor, funded by ratepayers, to pontificate on the retention of January 26?

Hypocritical Gavan – and I found much of the rest of your article (Loddon Herald February 1, 2024) bigoted and ignorant.

In building the Australian nation, you concede “…. there were missteps along the way, including violent interactions between the indigenous and the settlers”.

The figures are inexact. Aboriginals were not formally counted until the 1971 census and accurate records of those shot, clubbed, poisoned or pushed off cliffs were seldom kept.

A review by The Guardian concluded that between 1788 and 1928 eleven to 14,000 were massacred.

Professor Henry Reynolds, the pre-eminent authority on the subject, believes it’s closer to 20,000 (and 400 ‘settlers’). ‘Missteps’ Gavan? Thousands of ‘missteps’?

You say that “... activists have permeated the minds of our elites”, leading them to believe that “... members of the First Fleet and the Europeans who followed were invaders and colonisers”. Dust off your dictionary Gavan: ‘Colonisers – a country that sends settlers to a place and establishes political control over it’. Tick!

Hit list of grievances Sir, State Parliament is back for the first sitting week of the year and The Nationals return with a long hit list of issues.

We’ve been waiting for the opportunity to again highlight a brutal reality – Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage projects and can’t deliver for regional Victorians.

The problems mount, and Premier Jacinta Allan has done nothing to ease the pain since taking the helm in late September last year.

The deplorable state of our roads is a glaring testament to Labor’s financial irresponsibility.

A staggering 45 per cent cut in the road maintenance budget since 2020 has left our roads in disrepair, posing a serious threat to the safety and well-being of all Victorians, as seen with the notable increase in fatalities on our roads recently.

Last year, only 25km of roadside grading across the 23,000km of state-controlled roads was completed. The health care sector is also grappling with dangerously prolonged waiting times for critical health services. Victoria’s elective surgery wait list has increased to more than 67,000 patients, with the average overdue wait time for Category 3 patients rising to 335 days, compared to 281 days a year ago.

Meanwhile, the housing crisis has spiralled out of control under Premier Jacinta Allan’s leadership, evident with more than 50,000 applicants on the social housing waitlist. While the transfer housing waitlist leaves 9373 applicants in limbo, almost 6000 meet the criteria for a priority transfer.

Yet Labor has abandoned some of the most vulnerable individuals due to its lack of investment.

The most recent case being a vision-impaired man stranded without the basic necessity of an appropriate home.

The Allan Labor Government consistently falls short of its responsibilities and needs to be held accountable for its inability to deliver for Victorians.

FEATURES Vernon’s blacksmith shop in Korong Vale

Vernons of the Vale HORSES and carts were the standard carriage down Korong Vale’s Vernon Street to the railway station.

They gave way to trucks and cars a century ago and today still travel that same street even though the once-bustling railway station has long been dismantled.

So who were the Vernons? Arthur Vernon, born 1851, South Molton, Devon, England, son of Henry and Ann Vernon, nee Cock, emigrated with his family on the Gypsy Queen which arrived in Melbourne on April 25, 1855.

Vernon married Amelia Lucke, born 1857, on March 23, 1873, and their children Ann, Eleanor Jane, Frederick Lucke and Amelia, all born at Eddington before the family moved to Korong Vale.

In the Vale, Joshua Vernon, Emily, Hettie, Catherine Rose, Stanley, Mary Emma

By KEN ARNOLD Louisa, Millicent Eunice, Edith Clarice, Marshall Phillip, Ethel Amice, Valentine Maurice Cecil and Daisy Doris Phylis were born.

Amelia Vernon died on January 20, 1918 whilst Arthur died on April 21, 1929.

Arthur Vernon exhibited a set of light horse shoes at the Shire of Korong Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Show held at Wedderburn in September 1887 while Arthur Vernon was farming in April 1903 when he fell from a disc harrow.

Frederick Lucke Vernon had established an undertaking business by September 1914.

By April Vernon was also operating as

a blacksmith and wheelwright. Little is known about the blacksmith shop, however, it must have been successful when you view the photograph.

Frederick Lucke Vernon, 1878-1959, married Hannah Maria Faulks, 18791986, He was a member of the local fire brigade, rifle club, Australian Natives’ Association and most other organisation whilst at Korong Vale.

Vernon and his family left for Nyah in late September 1918.

The Vernon family had the post office at Vinifera in 1933 whilst Frederick was the secretary of Vinifera common.

Adolph Frederick Lucke, born 1827, Sweden, married Eleanor Jane Derby, born 1830, and to them were born Amelia - 1857, William Barnard - 1860, at Sand-

hurst, John Samuel - 1862 and Adolph Frederick - 1864, both at Tarnagulla.

Adolph Frederick Lucke senior died in 1864 whilst his widow died in 1900.

Adolph Frederick Lucke, William Barnard Lucke and Arthur Vernon, all of Korong Vale, applied for a patent for an improvement in plough shares of the plate metal type, NSW No. 7512, June 1897.

He steps into the shoes of Justin Laird who steered the Bears to a preliminary final berth in a season that had the Serpentine outfit enjoy more than a few purple patches.

Laird relinquished the coaching role but has been retained for 2024 in a line-up that will be more hungry for ultimate success.

Wilkinson said summer recruitment had brought in players of quality and experience to further boost the Bears’ stocks.

“I want the players on the same page for structure, fitness and game style,” he said after Sunday’s first all-club training run of the year.

“We’ve added guys who we think can play a part ... in defence and in attack, being the best players they can.

“We haven’t gone for superstars. Being well balanced will be our greatest strength against other sides.”

While Laird did most of the grunt work last season, the Bears have picked up players to share the workload.

Ruckman Nathan Twigg and Darcy Hawker have returned to Janiember Park after a couple of seasons with Boort in the North Central League.

The major loss for Serpentine is ruckman Aiden Brohm who has headed off to Heathcote league club North Bendigo.

Brohm returned to football last season after four years off, making Serpentine’s best list in 11 of 18 games.

Serpentine has also re-signed veteran Andrew Gladman who still makes his presence felt up forward and in occasional wanders back to his former dominant defence territory.

Doolan Nihill, best on ground in White Hills’ reserves Heathcote flag, is tipped to strengthen the midfield and back up Charlie Gadsden while grunt is expected from Tyler Miles who crosses from Maiden Gully.

But it is that new strength and balance that Wilkinson hopes will see Serpentine play on into the action of 2024 a further week than last season.

“We’ll be calculated, things will be explained and we will be prepared,” he said.

“We’ll make our decsions based on evidence and structures,” Wilkinson said.

Chance to finish top of the ladder WEDDERBURN is poised to finish top of the North Central playing area Division 1 ladder.

The Burn faces bottom side Donald in this Saturday’s final home and away match and barring an upset, should finish ahead of Donald Golf, Wycheproof and St Arnaud who are all within fours points of the leaders.

Saturday’s 20-shot victory over St Arnaud Country all but ended the hopes of a berth in the finals for Country.

In Division 2, Wedderburn will be playing for a top two finish this Saturday.

Meanwhile, the final round of North Central mid-week pennant was to be played yesterday with Wedderburn again expected to head the ladder going into finals.

Boort is also a chance to make finals in mid-week pennant.

And the season has ended for Pyramid Hill’s weekend and mid-week pennant teams after they were unable to make the finals this year.

INGLEWOOD THRILLING times for Division 5 last week when they lost a fortnight ago by a single shot and then reversed fortunes last week to be up by one.

A spot in the finals now looks likely and another win, in the last two games, will secure it.

Best performed rink last week were Joan Roberts, Dionne Roberts, Arthur Harrison and Pam Kelly with a five-shot win.

The Division 1 form is very up and down this season and hold-

ing on to third spot by the barest of margins. They must win one of the last two games, at least, to get an extra game in the finals and against Bendigo this week won’t be easy, with players unavailable, but the time has come to show our best.

The best rink again last week were David Vanston, Helen Leach, Bruce McClymont and Laurie Witham with a five-shot win The Premier League team on Saturday came up against the top side Bendigo this week and found why they are the top side with their consistency and depth showing out.

A couple of good performances were registered though, with the best being the rink of David Vanston, John Jackman, David Whitehead and Rob Day having a draw and the other rink of Daniel Garrett, John McClymont, Lindsay Kelly and Craig Kelly going down by two shots in a close match with scores being 15-17.

The Division 6 side played Marong and it nearly looked like Inglewood playing Inglewood as Marong were three players short and the Woodies’ provided the substitute players so they could field their team.

Luckily Inglewood stood strong and came away with the win by 15 shots.

Best rink were Bill Concol, Chris McEwan, Arthur Harrison and Ian Bradley with a 13-shot win.

Big week coming up with the annual Charlie Catto Tournament on Sunday and on Saturday the Premier League side are playing Moama who have one

of the best players of all time, Alex Marshall (Scotland), playing for them. Should be an exciting weekend.

BRIDGEWATER Division 5 on Saturday played away to Woodbury and as happened all season players struggled to adapt to the away greens with only Glenn Mangan’s rink salvaging a draw.

It was pleasing to see that one of the newer players Peter Gath hit a purple patch in his career drawing onto the kitty many times for the day.

Division 7 played at home to Cambells Creek and came away with a 10-shot win. The club is very proud of younger players Lachlan Catto and Craig Payne who bowled very well during the day to help set up the win, supported by a couple of old stayers in Fred Shea and Ian Clutton .

Band puts Holt to attack HIGH-SCORING partnerships featuring Wedderburn Band’s Luke, Brad and Isaac Holt proved too much to overtake by a strengthened Boort Yando bowling line-up on Saturday.

The trio sent balls in all directions around Market Square and Wedderburn had only brief moments when bowlers had a whiff of gaining the upper hand.

Alex Cockerell struck in his second over, having big-hitting Wedderburn opener Will Holt out caught and bowled for 15 - two fours and a six had Holt driving like a steamroller.

Luke and Brad Holt steered Wedderburn from 1/10 to 2/92.

Jarod Hodoras then dispatched the pair back to the pavilion within three deliveries.

Within six overs, Wedderburn was 6/124 when Fergus Bear got the edge to Jimmy Van De Wetering and Kirk and Will Gould chimed in with the scalps of Giorlando and Smith.

Isaac Holt’s arrival at the crease and a top-scoring 43 not out guided Wedderburn to the handy score of 185.

Wedderburn took until the 15th over before inflicting damage on Boort Yando despite good line in deliveries from Adam Postle.

Openers Smith and Cockerell were methodically looking for

boundaries and singles when Cockerell was dismissed and the score 45 but Smith stayed at the crease long enough to see another 33 runs added to the scoreboard.

He was backed up by Bear who went on to top score for Boort Yando before falling to Van De Wetering in one of two quick wickets for the Wedderburn youngster who also took Hordoras out of the game.

The Boort Yando tail was no match for Wedderburn and the visitors fell 35 runs short.

At Kingower, an 82-run third wicket partnership between Matt Rowe (45 off 63 balls ) and Blake Pickles ( 50 off 40 balls) set the Kingower innings up against Arnold.

Both batsmen hit eight boundaries on the fast Kingower oval.

For the Redbacks Henry Mc Cullough’s 1/16 off seven overs his first three overs being maidens - was a standout.

Arnold started its innings going at six runs an over for the first thirteen overs.

Phil Scholes (30 off 32 balls) and Henry McCullough ( 33 off 29 balls ) led the way with a 56 run opening partnership.

Following their dismissals however, Kingower took control apart from a brief flurry from Adam Davies (18 off nine balls,

Gooding’s unbeaten knock saves day for top team

WITH the final four set in stone, the last round of the home and away fixtures of Upper Loddon junior cricket commenced on Saturday with players looking to tune up for the finals.

The two top teams Boort Yando and Kingower clashed at Kingower with the visitors electing to bat first.

Two wickets to Tyler Murphy in the opening over and two to brother Riley in the fourth had Boort Yando reeling at 4/11.

However, thanks to the efforts of Cooper Gooding, Boort Yando was able to recover and post a handy total of 139.

Gooding dominated the innings scoring 83 runs of the 110 scored off the bat. He added 31 runs with Luke Boyd for the fifth wicket and his efforts to farm the strike late in the innings enabled he and

Bridgewater’s Harry Kilby Finlay Arnold to add 38 valuable runs for the last wicket.

Gooding crunched 16 boundaries, taking full advantage of the fast outfield.

Riley Murphy picked up the wicket of Arnold to end the innings and claim bowling honours for Kingower with three wickets.

Kingower lost one wicket in the 22 minutes remaining when Morgan Lonza edged a ball which

rebounded off the chest of Lachie Hall at first slip, only to see Luke Boyd dive to complete the catch.

Kingower will resume on Saturday at 1/15.

The other game saw Wedderburn travel down the highway to Bridgewater and send the home team into bat. Bridgewater were dismissed just on stumps for a total of 108.

The two significant partnerships were the 24 run opening stand between Lewis Lonsdale and Connor Alexander, and the third wicket partnership of 26 featuring Smyth and Seth Hewitt.

Smyth top scored with fifteen while Nate Harrison was able to contribute twelve runs later in the innings.

For the first time this season, the inexperienced Wedderburn team were able to claim the full 10 wickets and bowl a team out.

Thomas did most of the damage claiming three wickets apiece, Thomas’s in the top and middle order while Huismann‘s were in the lower.

Charlie Finch also reached a milestone in claiming his first wicket in junior cricket.

BIG HEART AT HOME Knocks and bumps make Twigg smarter on return to game

NATHAN Twigg’s football gaze has returned home for season 2024.

The star ruckman is back at Loddon Valley club Bears Lagoon Serpentine after a concussion-interrupted two seasons with Boort in the North Central league.

His return to football has waited longer than the enforced 12-day rule for players knocked out in country Victorian games.

Weeks of CT and MRI scans followed by vestibular rehabilitation therapy since last June were consigned to the history books when Twigg took to Janiember Park for the Bears’ first full-club training run as temperatures skyrocketed to the high 30s on Sunday.

“Everything seems good now ... but I’ve no plans to be running backwards into a pack again,” Twigg said.

“After two lots of concussion in two seasons, it makes you think about being smart on where you run.”

“I had scans in the weeks after and then (fellow Boort player) Matt Chisari suggested vestibular rehabilitation,” the farmer said.

“At that stage I couldn’t put the radio on in the tractor or the ears would hurt and I would be crook in the guts.

“And for months there would be buzzing in the head.”

Enhanced gaze stability can be a benefit of the vestibular rehabilitation therapy treating trauma symptoms including dizziness, vertigo and unsteadiness.

“Everything seems good now although I am still a bit sensitive to sharp noise,” Twigg said.

Players showing signs of concussion have been made to stand out of football for a minimum 12 days under AFL Victoria three-phase guidelines - one or two days of relative rest, a period to allow recovery and a graded return to activity.

But last week, the Australian Institute of Sport released new guidelines for junior and community sport, recommend-

ing injured players now stand out of matches for at least 21 days. Players under 19 should be symptom free for 14 days before starting contact training.

For adults, the AIS says it should 10 days.

Twigg said he believed the 21-day mandatory break after injury “would be a good thing”.

He also said players knew within themselves how they were recovering. “Last year I gave it a couple of weeks and I was still not right,” he said.

Twigg’s return to Serpentine, the club where he has played most of his 245 games since starting as a junior in 2009 - Boort also had the talented ruckman for a few seasons as a youngster - has family focus too.

His father Ross, who died in 2009, had been part of the Bears’ 1994 premiership side.

“It’s 30 years since dad was in that flag-winning team ... a good time to come back home.”

“We’ve picked up some good players this season,” said the unassuming Twigg who had been an early favourite for the North Central’s Feeny Medal until his season was cut short
