MUSHROOM MINUS MUSHROOM compost producer Scato Plus has been put into liquidation.

Production is at a standstill at the Newbridge site, gates padlocked and liquidators PWC is seeking buyers for the company.

Expressions of interest for Scato Plus closed last week. Potential buyers had until last Wednesday to contact PWC,

however, requests for a statement on the liquidation from PWC have gone unanswered.

An advertisement in national media directing inquiries to PWC said: “The liquidators are seeking expressions of interest for the assets of Scato Plus, a specialist producer of compost for wholesale mushroom growers, situated in Newbridge.

“Key assets include 160 hec-

tare freehold property (with groundwater), specialised plant, equipment and infrastructure built specifically for compost production, raw materials, EPA licence, Intellectual property,” The pitch said the plant was capable of producing 500 tonnes of Phase 3 compost a week and had plans, permits and drawings for a 100-tonne a week mushroom growing facility.

A request was also made to Scato Plus director Bill Littleson for comment.

The company’s website, that was down late last week but again live from Monday, said that for the past 18 years Scato Plus “has grown and become one of Australia’s leading producers of Phase 1, 2 and 3 compost for wholesale mushroom growers across Australia”.

“We use raw materials grown on site and by surrounding farms that comply with our quality assurance system and HACCP standards.

“Scato Plus puts money back into the local community, supporting not-for-profit organisations and initiatives that benefit the surrounding areas, including Marong, Newbridge and Bridgewater,” it said..

hen you are able to merge really serious, real-world topics with just flat-out humour, it just creates a really nice kind of combination of flavours for a story, said Canadian author Gordon Korman last week when releasing his 100th - yes, that’s right 0.06 more than Sir Don Bradman’s test average. Should we invite Korman to experience a few doses of OTF humour, Loddon country style? Might not be a bad idea as we must report with a deep sense of melancholy duty, that some of our regular correspondents (you know, likes of The Oracle and his cohort) have been very, repeat very, quiet in recent weeks.

OOTY jokes often do the rounds ... change the name of club and, bingo, you’re up to date. Found this one the other day: This professor of psychology at Monash Uni built a truth-telling chair. Every time someone sitting it lied, the bottom of the chair -

essentially a trapdoor mechanism - collapsed sending the seated person flying to the ground. He knew it worked - he’d tried it. But he had to do some research before anyone would believe him. So he advertised for volunteers to come along and they’d get a fiver for their troubles, every hour. He received loads of replies and as such was able to take from any selection he liked. As a control for the experiment he decided to pick football supporters, and invited three along for the first day of trials. Anyway, the first day came and a Collingwood fan arrived, he sat in the chair and began to speak. “I think Collingwood Football Club are definitely the third force in Australian Rules Football...” and instantly the chair collapsed, sending him sprawling to the floor before he could carry on. Next, a Melbourne fan arrived, he sat in the chairand began to speak... “I think Melbourne are still capable of mounting a similar challenge on the title as last season” and instantly the chair collapsed, sending him sprawling to the floor before he could carry on. ‘Not exact’ long-term planning PREPARATION of long-term financial plans for Loddon Shire was not an exact science, Cr Gavan Holt told last week’s council meeting.

Cr Holt said council was required to prepare the 10-year financial plan but there were assumptions that had to be made,

including the level of State Government-imposed rate caps.

However, Cr Holt said he was a supporter of shorter-term plans for council finances. “They are nearer to reality,” Cr Holt said.

Council did not receive any public submissions on the draft 2022-2032 financial plan.

Push to lift tax take

LOCAL councils will push the Federal Government to extend its roads to recovery funding program.

And councils are also concerned that their share of money from the Federal Government under Commonwealth assistance grants has almost halved in 25 years.

Cr Gavan Holt told Loddon Shire Council last week that delegates to the Australian Local Government Association annual conference in Canberra had backed extension of the roads program beyond 2024.

Cr Holt said the program was significant for Loddon Shire It had enabled the council “to get our rural road network into

the condition that we have it,” he said.

Cr Holt said the conference was clear the program should be extended.

However, Cr Holt said that if financial assistance grants for local government had been retained at one per cent of Commonwealth taxation revenue when the scheme started in 1996, Loddon Shire would be have considerably more money for programs.

He said the current percentage of taxation returned to local government was 0.55 per cent.

Cr Holt said between 25 and 30 per cent of council revenue came from those grants.

If that was doubled, council-

lors and directors “would wrap their hands with glee.”

Last week’s council meeting adopted the annual infrastructure program and priority projects over the coming financial year.

The $9.45 million program includes council funding as well as Federal Government funding.

The 2022-2023 program includes $4.77 million towards a number of community projects, including an additional allocation for the completion of the Donaldson Park project and the Pyramid Hill streetscape.

Tenders for Donaldson Park have closed and a decision is expected to be made by councillors shortly to award the contract.

The infrastructure program also has $1.07 million to reseal and final seal 28km of the sealed road network; $969,632 to resheet and/or treat almost 21 km of the gravel road network, and $448,044 to resheet around 24.5km (both sides) of gravel shoulders.

There is funding of $727,152 for the renewal of a section of Newbridge road and renewal and widening of a section of the Echuca-Serpentine Road, $250,000 for Boort and Pyramid Hill flood mitigation projects.

It has also allocated $188,000 for the Coutts Street crossing project and installation of a pedestrian safety barrier at Lakeside Drive in Boort.

Lions roar into a new year CONSOLIDATION of membership and local projects will be the aim of Inglewood Lions Club this year.

That was the goal set by new president Robert Condliffe following his installation on Saturday night by district governor Harry Brindley.

Mr Brindley joined local Lions and members from Wedderburn and Charlton for the handover dinner at Inglewood Senior Citizens’ Centre.

For Mr Condliffe, it will be his 10th time serving as the club’s president in a membership that goes back several decades.

Mr Brindley said there was room for growth in membership of local Lions clubs and challenged them to consider the formation of Leo clubs for young people in the communities.

Leo clubs would be good for Lions clubs, the communities and the capacity to take on more projects, Mr Brindley said.

Outgoing president Eddie Sydor thanked members for their support during his year.

Other office-bears for 20222023 include secretary Deb Coon, treasurer Helen Swale, vice-president Ian Collie, tail twister John Little and Lion tamer Annette Smith.

IN BRIEF Farmers alert VICTORIAN farmers are encouraging international travellers to enact simple preventative measures to help keep the potentially devastating Foot and Mouth livestock disease out of Australia. Victorian Farmers’ Federation President Emma Germano said that news of the disease reaching the popular holiday island of Bali in neighbouring Indonesia is very concerning for farmers. “The risk of tourists unknowingly bringing home Foot and Mouth is very real.

We’ve kept it out of Australia for over 100 years and we need to do all we can to keep it that way.”

Habner on move LODDON Shire Council’s manager executive and commercial services Lynne Habner ends 11 years of employment with the council tomorrow to relocate to South Australia. Mayor Dan Straub said: “Lynne, who has been at council for 11 years, has been integral to managing the tourism and economic development of the shire, as well as providing highlevel support to councillors.”

More care talks PLANS for a private child care centre in Boort will move to the next phase in gaining Federal Government approval. Mark Klose said the plans had now progressed to a further online meeting scheduled for next Thursday. Mr Klose has been seeking Federal Government approval to open the centre since last year.

Garden tour BRIDGEWATER Garden Club members will tour gardens in Bendigo next Thursday for their monthly meeting.

Secretary Jenny Hosking said a car pool will operate for members from the Bridgewater railway station.

Amity helping worthy causes DONATIONS had been made to many worthy causes in the past year by Boort Amity, president Maree Stringer told members at last week’s handover dinner.

Maree, who has been re-elected to lead the women’s service club, said the donations had included $3200 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, Very Special Kids, Royal Flying Doctor Service and Boort District School.

Donations had also been made to Boort Pre School and the Cancer Council.

“Some of the many things that Amity has been busy with are assisting at the gate for the trotting club, the Christmas light competition, coolroom and porta-loo hire, Amity auction, meals on wheels ... Anzac Day and helping the RSL and the Australia Day ceremony as well as many more,” Maree said.

“We recently held a very successful community connections dinner at the Railway hotel with 32 attendees.

“We had a nice meal and a great talk by our guest speaker,

Donna Doyle, CEO of Boort District Health. It was a good night bringing people together.”

Maree said the many events held and “the more times we get out into the community hopefully gives the public a better understanding of this great club.”

Loddon Mayor Dan Straub congratulated Amity members on their service to the community.

REPLACEMENT of box culverts along the Western Waranga Channel is part of Goulburn Murray Water’s winter works program.

Crews are currently installing new culverts near Boort Golf Club and on Borung-Fernihurst Road.

The winter program is at the midway point and GMW infrastructure delivery services general manager Warren Jose said a significant amount of work would be completed during the next three months.

“This year’s winter works program, we’re investing about $6 million. That covers desilting, weed treatment and major upgrades to assets such as bridges, culverts and regulator structures,” he said.

“We’re treating weeds in around 200km of channel this winter, which is almost five per cent of our total network. We are also removing silt from about 100km of channels. This will enhance flows and ensure water gets through to our customers,” Mr Jose said.

Vale volunteers upskill FRESH from passing their breathing apparatus training, Korong Vale Fire Brigade volunteers were honing their skills at the town fire station on Monday night.

Brigade lieutenants Tom Bligh and Kevin Walton, Melonie Moore and Jack McLennan completed five special sessions at Wedderburn to have Korong Vale brigade able to use breathing apparatus for the first time.

Melonie said a minimum of four brigade members had to be accredited before the equipment was issued to a brigade.

She said the training now put Korong Vale skills on a similar level to Inglewood and Wedderburn brigades.

“We think it’s important for our brigade and the town to have these skills ... we’ve been waiting for ages to have the equipment,” Melonie said.

“It also means more opportunities for our volunteers to respond to incidents across the area. We can now be called to assist just as other nearby brigades.

The quartet spent Monday night continuing their familiarisation with the special firefighting equipment.

Tom said a full brigade training was planned for September, making other members aware of how the qualified members use breathing apparatus.

Breathing apparatus is used by firefighters to allow them to work in a toxic or oxygen depleted environments including house and car fires.

EIGHT East Loddon P12 College students have earned a place in the Lions Club junior public speaking competition.

Students from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have been selected for the East Loddon club final after making presentations to judges Kylie Smith (Dingee Bush Nursing Centre manager), Lincoln Fitzgerald (Loddon Shire CEO) and former college student Emma Lynch.

The eight will make their next presentation on July 19 with winners progressing to the Lions district final of the competition.

The club has long run the competition at East Loddon College with former winners including Lisa Mitchell who was guest speaker at last year’s Australia Day celebrations in Calivil.

Last drinks for hotel couple NEWBRIDGE farewelled publicans Terry and Jeanette Miller on Sunday.

After almost 20 years, the Millers have sold the town’s hotel.

Residents travelled from across the district for a final drink before the hotel closed for two days with new owners opening the doors yesterday.

Community puts on a vibrant display THE vibrancy and culture of the Loddon’s Filipino community was celebrated on Saturday.

Pyramid Hill’s United Filipino Organisations held its first Philippine Independence Day function, marking the anniversary of their home country gaining independence from Spain in 1898.

Flags were paraded into the memorial hall by Pyramid Hill College principal Fiona Moon and St Patrick’s Primary School teacher Zoe Dennis, Kim Bennett and Bill Quinn, Denber and Rae Reyes before guests of honour spoke of the role of the Filipino community in the shire.

Mayor Dan Straub said: “Today we are celebrating you, the people of Pyramid Hill and your story. This is done with a sense

of respect and pride while also keeping your own traditions alive and sharing them with us to make a greater country.”

Former mayor Cheryl McKinnon said the Filipino community had been inspirational in the local community, forging a new life in a new country.

And Kia Ora Piggery’s Tom Smith, who first brought Filipinos to Pyramid Hill to work on his farm, said one of the greatest rewards was seeing the community be part of his business and town.

Cr Straub also invested UFO leaders including new president Marilyn Fernandez during celebrations. Traditional dances and a fashion parade were also part of the evening.

Sale officially stamped NEW Inglewood Post Office owners Kylie Turner and Peter Carter are being welcomed by customers this week.

The pair has purchased the post office from Trevor and Marie Ralph who last Friday officially retired after more than 40 years as postmaster and business owners.

Kylie has previously worked for City of Greater Bendigo and Peter was a Telstra satellite

technician until the telco reduced staff.

“We were driving through Inglewood and saw the post office for sale sign,” Peter said.

“We considered the possibilities and decided that would be a good business in a great community.”

Kylie and Peter completed intensive Australia Post training for their accreditation and Peter has also gained his motorcycle

learner’s permit to make mail deliveries around Inglewood.

Kylie said: “We’ve really enjoyed meeting local people over the past two weeks during the handover period from Trevor and Marie.”

The new post office owners will continue to provide all Australia Post services and spent the weekend putting new gift stock on the shelves.

And Kylie said they would

open during the lunch hour from this week Trevor and Marie are now looking forward to enjoying retirement after having the busines for sale for three years.

“Forty-plus plus years is a long time to be at one post office,” Trevor said. “I first came here as postmaster and then owning the business when Australia Post changed the model for smaller post offices.”

COVID tests helping community COVID testing continues to be available at Loddon health services.

Boort District Health CEO Donna Doyle said the weekday drive-through screening clinic remained open for collection of rapid antigen tests or for PCR swabs if required.

Donna said people wanting to use the service should book at BDH reception.

Inglewood and District Health Service CEO Dallas Coghill said his staff was providing rapid antigen testing to people in the community requiring a test.

Many drive-through testing sites across regional Victoria have been closed in recent weeks as management of the pandemic responses changes.

Local health services have again urged people to be alert to COVID symptoms.

Two residents ask shire to raise rainbow flag RESIDENTS have asked Loddon Shire Council to fly the rainbow flag and for councillors to march in Melbourne’s Midsumma Pride parade.

Letters from Vanessa Heaton, of Rheola, and Pixie Lefay were late inclusions in the agenda of last week’s council meeting.

Ms Heaton wants council to join other regional councillors in the Melbourne parade while Ms Lefay wants the rainbow flag flown in International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex discrimination and Transphobia Day. Both asked whether councillors had considered the action at their forums or briefings.

Ms Heaton also asked if council had considered pride events.

Mayor Dan Straub said in a statement read to the meeting: “Flying the rainbow flag was not discussed at the council forum or briefing.

“Council’s access and inclusion plan is due for renewal next year and this idea can be considered as part of renewing that plan. “I will also note that council has a number of plans and strategies which promote inclusion such as the gender equality action plan and workforce plan.”

Cr Straub also said: “Marching in solidarity for any social issue is a decision for individual councillors to consider and any councillors wishing to attend will be supported by council.”

The letters were considered during a report on councillor activities.

LODDON householders who check their electricity price now receive a $250 bonus.

Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh said the $250 payment had been available since last Thursday to all Victorian households who visit www.compare.energy.vic.gov. au to compare their energy deal and seek out a better price.

“Residents across northern Victoria continue to pay some of the highest prices in the state for their electricity and gas,” he said.

THE FACE OF OUR REGION

Locals are Aussie born and bred LODDON Shire residents are mostly Australian born and bred, according to 2021 Census data released last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Just under 80 per cent were born in Australia. The fast rising country of birth for Loddon residents is the Philippines with England the highest response for other countries.

More than half the shire’s population is aged 50 and above, the 60-64 group with 10 per cent of the population.

The Census results have shown an increase in the shire’s population for the first time in decades and was welcomed by councillors at their shire council meeting last week, hours after news of the rise had been released.

Catholicism and Anglican remain the largest Christian faiths while 40 per cent of Loddon residents said they had no religion.

The Census showed 1352 people had been providing unpaid care for children while a quarter of residents had been involved as volunteers with local organisations in the previous 12 months.

Last year’s Census was conducted during COVID lockdowns and restrictions that had limited volunteer activity for the previous 18 months.

Crews replace track culverts CULVERTS are being replaced in a V/LIne track infrastructure upgrade between Inglewood and Korong Vale.

Crews are on site this week installing new concrete box culverts at an existing bridge at Kurting, reducing the risk of disruptions caused by infrastructure faults on the freight network as produce heads to market The rail infrastructure upgrade is taking place on V/Line’s freight network on the Sea Lake and Manangatang lines.

A spokesperson said: “We’re upgrading rail infrastructure at Kurting, which is on a major feeder line into the north west freight network.

“This is just one of the many projects we are delivering to improve the safety and reliability of the regional Victorian rail freight network.”

V/Line said the infrastructure upgrade is being completed as part of its annual program of maintenance works.

The upgrade works are being carried

out as part of a two-week maintenance blitz on the north west freight network and lines in western Victoria which carry freight and passenger trains.

V/Line said more than $13 million in planned works was being completed as part of the major works program, with both passengers and freight operators set to benefit from upgrades to track, signalling and structures as well as the construction of fencing to help reduce animal strikes.

The Victorian Budget has $181 million for critical maintenance works on the regional rail freight network to improve rail freight competitiveness and support the growing freight task that is vital to regional economies and supply chains.

Coaches are replacing passenger trains on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines for the entire journey until next Thursday.

Hunting dogs in training HUNTING dogs and their handlers have been put through two days of simulated trials in the Loddon.

The Club L’Epagneul Breton field trial on private property near Serpentine gave dogs a controlled environment to hone their skills.

Former Inglewood electrician Gus Pagliaro, now in Benalla, brought fellow club members to the property hunting quail.

“We’re about being respectful as shooters and for the dogs,” he said. “No one is out to lose or wound game.”

“We don’t go out to shoot a bag, we go out to work with the dogs.”

The novice field trial was also the final event of the club’s year with dogs and owners aiming to qualify for championship events in 2023.

Judge and steward Steve Burke said the trial rules were based on regulations drawn up more than a century ago in Britain.

“The dogs have to remain steady, the dog retrieving has to bring the bird back without any teeth marks,” he said.

Steve said dogs lost points, or were disqualified, for barking and chasing game, disobedience and non-retrieval of birds.

“The birds ... they are wild birds and they know what’s going on and will do everything to

Bridgewater-Raywood road upgrade complete Following progressive works as funding became available over a period of 10 years, the Bridgewater Raywood Road upgrade is now complete.

One of the bigger road-making projects handled by Loddon Shire over recent years, the upgrade included widening 18 kilometres of the road to a two-lane sealed road. This has allowed two vehicles to pass on either side safely, without having to move to the road’s shoulders.

In addition to improving safety, the upgrade will reduce maintenance costs associated with the road.

Widening the seal has also allowed heavy vehicles and

machinery to turn into and out of farming properties more safely and permit the carriage of greater vehicle loads.

The Bridgewater-Raywood Road has been identified as one of the Shire’s busiest local roads, including for heavy vehicles, providing a link between a number of important arterial roads and a northern freight route around Bendigo between Bridgewater to Shepparton and beyond.

Funding for the road’s upgrades over the years was provided by the Federal Government and Council.

Snap attacks on alligator weed AGRICULTURE Victoria wants farmers to report alligator weed as they snap into action to control prohibited weed.

Biosecurity officer Kaitlin Wright said the appeal was particularly for farmers along the Bendigo Creek north of Huntly.

The Bendigo Creeks runs from Kangaroo Flat to Calivil and the department said that after wrestling with wetter-than-average conditions for the past two years, officers are focusing on a 30km stretch where patches have been found.

Ms Wright said high water levels had prevented weed removal last summer and autumn.

“Consistent treatment has stopped the infested area from expanding, but the high water levels of the past two years have made thorough treatment difficult,” Ms Wright said.

“It’s hoped the seasonal conditions will improve and a more effective control program can return this summer.

“Inspect vehicle tyres and equipment if you’ve been working near the creek,” she said.

Alligator weed spreads by high water flows and being transported by humans on vehicle tyres or due to slashing work to maintain drains.

“If mown or cut alligator weed will spread faster as it loves sending out roots from the cuttings,” Ms Wright said. “It’s also suspect-

“The invasive weed can form dense mats that cover large areas of water, push out native plants and reduce bird and fish life,” she said.

Ms Wright said alligator weed had green glossy spear-shaped leaves and hollow stems that range from pale pink to yellow to green, the white papery flowers on stems often resemble common clover flowers but will only be seen in summer.

However, whether the Family Agreement should be discussed with, or disclosed to, the next generation, depends on your family circumstances.

Powers of Attorney should never be neglected because they ensure continued asset management in the event of a loss of capacity (either sudden or gradual).

However, many people aren’t aware that Powers of Attorney can be tailored to create strategic planning opportunities. For example:1. Parallel Powers of Attorney can be prepared, empowering different people to manage different assets; 2. Powers of Attorney can include limitations, or guidance, as to how assets should be managed; 3. The Power of Attorney can take effect immediately in relation to a specific asset, to give the next generation control over one aspect of farm management for the purpose of obtaining experience.

A Family Agreement can help to bring together all of the various documents, to provide an over-arching strategy, and to include guidance, wishes, or instructions that cannot be included in other documents.

Quality was very mixed, comprising limited drafts of good grainfed lambs in among a lot of wintery clean-up lots lacking finish.

The market was firm to a few dollars dearer but continued to perform around quality.

The better finished slaughter lambs in short-skins sold in a range of 780c to 860c/kg cwt, while plain and untidy penlots showed a wide variance of 650c to 760c/kg cwt.

One line of extra heavy export lambs estimated at 38-40kg cwt topped the sale at $277/head with most sales of 30kg plus crossbreds at $238 to $265/ head.

Heavy lambs, 26-30kg cwt made from $200 to $249/head with the best fat score 3 and 4 crossbred types averaging around 810c/kg cwt.

Neat trade lambs were well supported by a major domestic buyer at $190 to $214/head with the main run of 22-24kg cwt types averaging $198/head at an estimated 826c/kg cwt.

A few pens of fresh conditioned domestic lambs in the 20-22kg range sold to $191/head to be the dearest processing types on a c/kg basis.

Plainer pens of domestic weighted lambs, often in smaller lots and in longer skins, varied from $160 to $185/head.

Store lambs with frame and showing better breed quality traits sold from $120 to $155/head.

Very small or secondary lambs any-

thing from $7 for small Merinos to $100/ head.

The sheep yarding was limited and mutton was cheaper.

Heavy crossbred ewes making between $178 to $224/head.

General run of trade ewes $120 to $168 and the plainest light sheep $28 to $67/head.

EARLIER this year, the Mitchell Institute for Education and Health Policy at Victoria University eleased a report on access to childcare in communities across Australia. It would come as no surprise to local families that Loddon was declared one of the worst child care deserts in Victoria.

In May, I announced that an elected Liberal and Nationals Guy Government will deliver a new child care centre for Wedderburn as part of the redevelopment of Wedderburn College.

This project would provide essential childcare services for Wedderburn and surrounding communities, and the Liberal Nationals are right behind it.

Unfortunately, more than six weeks after my announcement, the Andrews

STATE PERSPECTiVE Labor Government has failed to get on board. In the intervening weeks, the Victorian and NSW Governments announced 30 hours of four- year-old kindergarten to be rolled out across both states over the next 10 years.

The Liberal Nationals support this plan, and we will implement it if elected.

Unlike Labor, we know that regional communities do not just need better access to kindergarten, they also need better access to child care.

We understand that, in communities like Wedderburn, families can’t wait 10 years for a new child care centre.

In February, I presented a petition to Parliament with over 700 signatures calling for more child care services

for families in Loddon Shire. These signatures represent mothers, fathers, carers, grandparents, and employers who are crying for more childcare in Wedderburn.

A lack of appropriate child care forces parents to choose between caring for their children and returning to the workforce.

At a time when many businesses are struggling to find staff, we need to support parents to go back to work.

The Wedderburn community live in a child care desert. We need a Government that is committed to delivering the child care they need.

Trend reversed, set new targets ACROSS our region is idle industrial infrastructure once the scene of activity generating economic value for people and communities, a source of employment and success.

They were at a peak when the Loddon Shire last had a population of more than 8000 people. Then began two decades of decline until the 2021 Census that reported an increase in the shire’s population last August, and in all likelihood, a further increase in the 12 months since.

Our communities are again finding favour as a place to live, that probably started before the COVID-19 pandemic, was given a boost when restrictions and lockdowns hit and has shown no signs of abating.

Every indication is that growth will continue and be recorded when the next Census is conducted in 2026. Will

EdiToRiAL our shire population be nearer to 9000 people? Will Boort, Inglewood and Wedderburn push through the 1000 population mark? On current trends, the answer would be a firm yes.

But with idle rural industry sites and infrastructure, perhaps we should be aiming for a population above 10,000 people within five, or maybe 10 years.

Loddon Shire Council is increasingly talking about population and economic growth that would bring benefits to the shire’s economic base and strengthen communities.

Missing from the conversation so far has been the higher tiers of government.

What role are they prepared to play by

investing in infrastructure and growth of rural communities that can be home to local jobs or the place of residence of people choosing to work in the nearby regional capital of Bendigo?

Have no doubt, the drift away from the Loddon Shire has been halted and is now turning around. That is cause for celebration in our local communities.

It is also grounds for government to listen to the compelling case to lift investment in infrastructure and services and respond with action.

The future of our towns is certainly looking up on the back of the Census figures. Now is the time to set real growth targets.

The colonial era is supposed to be over and it is time that we start exploring ways to live harmoniously with the

Good pioneering Fella

PETER Falla, a native of Guernsey, Channel Islands sailed on the maiden run of the wool ship Evening Star which docked at Port Adelaide on 22 December 1854.

Falla, a carpenter, soon travelled to Amherst, Victoria where he found work as a cartage contractor.

He was either briefly a partner with or was employed by Gilbert McGlashan at St. Arnaud prior to forming a partnership with William Mead Hearn as blacksmiths and agricultural implement makers at Donald in late 1878 they being awarded first prize for their farm waggon at the local show in September 1880 whilst having also invented an improved comb that could be fitted to strippers.

This partnership, dissolved in 1881 and resulted in both men establishing their own blacksmith shops.

Falla soon offered a “damp weather” adaptor stripper with a peg-drum, that could be purchased for £50. It was capable of stripping ten acres a day in fine weather.

During the 1890s Falla developed a skim-plough, suitable for the Wimmera soils.

The “Donald Times” of June 3, 1898 reported that P Falla has just built a farm

roller different to the normal roller. The face of the roller is made of a series of pieces of 3 x 2 1/2 inch ironbark bolted onto iron circles. The idea was to reduce the draught so it could be pulled by two heavy horses or three light horses. The roller was made in two sections each of 2 ft. 6 in. in diameter, the overall width being nine feet.

The draught is obtained from a front bar drawing direct from an axle, and the two

sections are so constructed that in turning the inner half will revolve backwards whilst the outer goes forward.

A large platform covers the whole, upon which extra weight, up to a ton or two, maybe placed if required. It was most useful for breaking up clods of soil.

During the same year the “Donald Times” also reported that Falla was awarded first prize for his plough, against six other competitors from all parts of the Colony, at the field trial conducted by the Donald Pastoral and Agricultural Society.

A similar trial was held in September 1899 between five ploughs., viz Falla, with two machines, W Hearn with two machines and the stump jump plough of R McSwain.

Once again Falla won with his seven furrow plough, was placed second with his eight furrow plough whilst Hearn took third place with his seven furrow plough.

In the early 1900s Falla fitted a seed sower and fertiliser box across the front of his plough, which he called the Victory but is was not until July 29, 1902 that Falla and his son in law Joseph Henry Bolden patented their improved seed and fertiliser distributing attachment to a skim plough, along with other ploughs, also described as a combination plough and drill, it being given patent number 19552.

This plough could be purchased with as many as nine furrows.

Local farmers were invited to visit Danny Muir’s farm at Witchipool (now Litchfield) on August 15, 1902 where Peter Falla would give a demonstration of this implement.

The seed and fertiliser would drop onto the ground and then be ploughed under.

Bolden took control of the business when Falla died in 1908. It was then that Bolden applied for patents to cover improvements to the driving gear for his seed and fertilizer distributor which was driven by a square link chain it being given No. 9395, June 12, 1908.

Bolden had sold the rights to manufacture this machine to Gibbins and Co, of Footscray, by 1913, it was to go on to become one that companies best selling lines.

Bolden sold the Wood Street property in June 1926 as he was building a new factory in McCulloch Street. Bolden produced his last skim-plough in 1952. This factory also manufactured scoops, bag dumping trollies, buggy jacks, spanners, harrows, fern cutters, gate hinges and adjustable wrenches.

Local trainer flies home with the Stars and Stripes WINTER racing commenced this week at Charlton on Monday in bright sunshine which continued throughout the afternoon.

It was the annual American Independence Day fixture held in association with The Meadowlands in New Jersey and a most competitive meeting it was.

Charlton owner, breeder and trainer John Tormey was victorious in taking the Stars and Strips 3Y0 & Older Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres with Brother Joseph, a Father PatrickWicked Schemes gelding.

Golden dart days at Fossicker’s Cup COMPETITORS from across the state converged on Wedderburn for the weekend’s Gold Fossicker’s Cup. The annual Loddon Darts Association tournament made a return after missing two years due to COVID restrictions.

And tournament director Robert Day was pleased to see the mechanics’ institute hall abuzz with competition over two days.

He said capacity entries had been received although two teams - one men and women - had to withdraw due to isolation requirements.

Winners of the men’s cup were Darren Manners, Michael Britton, Brent Nunn, Wayne Davis and Luke Wiles and runners-up the team of Bryce Redmond, Shane Keirl, Herb Moore, Ricky Eyes and Russell Verlinden.

Johnston retains title in convincing style Dianne Johnston and Gaye Sim

DIANNE Johnston is again Boort Golf Club’s ladies’ A Grade champion.

She took out the title over three rounds last month in convincing fashion and will now play in the Kara Kara association championships in Charlton on August 4.

Joining Dianne at Charlton will be the club’s B Grade champion Gaye Sim. Club member Dot Beattie said: “To celebrate their wins, we invited past players of our club to come

out and have afternoon tea with us. Fourteen came and it so was lovely to see these ladies, one even came out of aged care to join us. Lots of fond memories were shared by all.”

“Over the past month or so we have been encouraging ladies to come out and try golf on a Sunday, the ones who have attended have enjoyed the hit,” Dot said.

“Hopefully they will come out again sometime soon, perhaps when it gets a bit warmer.”

INGLEWOOD A sublime Sunday greeted intrepid golfers this week with players taking full advantage of the beautiful day and the perfectly prepared course to further sharpen their skills in advance of the much anticipated Inglewood open golf championship in late July.

Notable plays of the day included eventual winner, Nathan Joyner who, on occasions, was obviously so enamored with the landscape, he decided several times to take the scenic route to the flag and explore the adjacent fairways on his way to posting a very respectable 39 stableford points.

The previous week’s top two players exchanged places this week, with Rob Stranger carding an excellent 33 points for runner up position.

PYRAMID HILL The club played its third medal round on Sunday and the winner was Jason Deller with a score of 92-24-68. Runner up was Ted Carmody and Dave Mann with a nett of 72. Nearest the pin on the 16th was Pete Gargan.

BOORT The middle weekend of the school holidays proved to be a quiet affair at golf with only five locals playing alongside a couple of visitors from Charlton. Enjoying a break from his football club duties, Mark Perryman was the clear winner on 38 points, two clear of young Aaron Schofield visiting from Charlton, and four ahead of Tim Lanyon. In the nearest the pins, Tim took out two, as did Aaron’s father Brett, while Ray Taylor claimed the remaining one. Saturday will be another stableford round.

James ditches bridesmaid tag PYRAMID Hill’s James Ritchie considers himself lucky to have won the A Grade championship but is also pleased to have shaken off role of bridesmaid in the premier event.

James had previously won the nett award in the championships but never the main trophy.

“I’ve always been the bridesmaid. A couple

of players left the door open this year for me when they didn’t compete,” James said.

The new champion has been playing since he was aged nine and as a youngster would accompany father Ron around the course.

James said he was pleased to have put in three solid rounds during the championship.

James is now hoping he can continue that winning form into the club’s annual tournament next month.

Dogs ignite spark with handy breeze THE Bulldogs’ supporter base was keen for action after the Round 11 Bye, and both the reserves and senior games against the Bears came with their respective challenges.

A loss in the reserves would have seen Bears Lagoon Serpentine move to within one win of the Dogs on the LVFNL ladder.

And, playing on the Bears ground, in recent years a formidable challenge, the senior team was looking to maintain its unbeaten run.

Both games were completed with a three- goal breeze favouring the northern end, and as a result, the goal umpire at the clubroom end had a comparatively easy game.

In the reserves clash the Dogs kept the hosts goalless in the first half and had quickly built up a 50-point buffer by the main change.

By game’s end the Bulldogs had posted 16.2, and won by 90 points. Jordan Simpson turned in a polished display of run and carry, and his seven goals made him a standout.

Rohan Pollock maintained his weekly average with another four goals, and five others were able to raise both flags.

The Moon brothers, Brad and

Nathan, Tom Nunn and Ross James were great in their ability to get in and lead the way.

The senior clash was a lacklustre affair in the opening stanza, with one goal only kicked, and the Dogs leading by nine points to two.

The use of the breeze in the second term seemed to be the spark that was required.

An eight-goal onslaught saw the game effectively ended.

The visitors simply had too much depth and class, and despite again kicking the solitary goal in the third term, they rammed home seven in the final quarter and a 94-point win was the result.

Steven Gunther is relishing his role as captain, and with five goals was a great leader. Bailey George, also with five goals, helped cap off great work by the midfield team.

Not much got past Zac Dingwall at halfback, and what did was mopped up by Jack Timmins and Dylan Morison.

The Dogs introduced another recruit - Dylan Collis worked his way into the contest very effectively. It was a top team effort and will need to be replicated next week when the Bulldogs host Marong.

And after an even first half, Bridgewater was able to draw away from Inglewood.

Round makes for tipsters’ nightmare THE tips are in for a blockbuster Loddon Valley league round this Saturday ... but every result could very easily go the opposite way.

Mitiamo escaped against Calivil by nine points back in round three. The Demons have been super stiff and coming back from the break and bye, will challenge the Superoos at home.

Ladder leaders Pyramid Hill and Marong clash at Mitchell Park. Both have form, percentage and desire.

The Bulldogs will have to negate Panthers’ goalkicking star Brandyn Grenfell. If not, he could kick another bag (and the season’s ton), seeing Marong to a victory and favouritism for the flag - that could be enough to spur the home side to victory.

Bridgewater is at home to Bears Lagoon Serpentine, tenacious again last round but until the breakthrough and rattle the scoreboard.

While the Mean Machine looks better on paper, it would be foolish to underestimate the visitors.

And Inglewood will be looking to finally get back as a winner and record victory number four for the season. Against Newbridge, the Blues could be tested.

Yes, tips are made but surprises could be on the cards.

Tales of the talls

THE BIG men are having a big say on the fortunes of North Central league clubs Wedderburn and Boort.

The impact of Redbacks’ tall Jordan Hargreaves and his counterpart at Boort, Nathan Twigg was on show a fortnight ago.

For Hargreaves, the league’s 2021 Feeny Medallist, it was his second game back from a training injury a fortnight into the season when the Redbacks were flying high.

But a training drill on a wet Easter Monday night saw him slide along the ground and break his right hand during a routine drill.

For the next six weeks, Hargreaves kept up the training routine “involving anything that didn’t use the hands”.

“It was one of those freak things ... normally it would just have been a dislocated finger,” Hargreaves said.

Match fitness was a concern for Hargreaves who returned three weeks ago in the win over Wycheproof Narraport and then lined up a week later against St Arnaud. “That was a tough one.

The ground was wet and boggy and I struggled (for fitness) a bit.

The ground was spongey and the ball play didn’t stop much all day,” he said.

“But I feel I am right now and

Hargreaves’ six-week absence from the Redbacks lineup was the first time he had missed a game through injury in his senior career.

“With the injuries around the club, it has been good to be available again for selection and be part of the team.”

Twigg, who switched to the

Pies from Loddon Valley club Bears Lagoon Serpentine this season, has been among Boort’s best in six of the eight North Central games this season.

Like Hargreaves, Twigg was also on the injured list, missing two games after suffering concussion in the ANZAC weekend clash against Charlton.

One of those matches missed was against Wycheproof Narraport when the Pies went down by 26 points.

Twigg is expecting a cracker game when the two clash this Saturday.

“It’s going to be a solid game and if we can finish up in the second half of the season better, that will be really pleasing,” said Twigg who had played junior football at the Pies.

“I’m enjoying the switch to North Central ... stepping up and trying to be better, trying to make an impact and have a decent crack.”

Back from break with optimism NORTH Central Football League starts its uninterrupted run to finals on Saturday.

Wedderburn, although firmly in the four, faces a big test at home against Sea Lake Nandaly.

The Tigers have dropped two games this season and the Redbacks at home could challenge.

For the Redbacks, the general league byes have been given vital time for a long list of players to recover from injury.

A win on Saturday is not out of the question.

Boort has the chance to climb above Wycheproof Narraport.

Coach Andrew Hawker said: “At this stage we have lost Darcy Hawker for what looks like the rest of the year with a broken wrist and have a couple of others we will be managing but generally we aren’t in bad shape.

“But we have been playing okay footy for the last few games, so we are optimistic we can get more and more competitive from here onwards.”

Loddon HERALD AUSTRALIAN sporting legend John Forbes will be honoured at Mitiamo on Saturday.

The Superoos will pay tribute to club and Loddon Valley league life member Forbes when they host Calivil. Forbes died aged 79 in March 2020.

Mitiamo treasurer and long-time friend of Forbes, Ken Hynes said: “We would have liked to pay tribute to Forbesy last year but the stopstart nature of the season made it impossible to make any plans.”

Hynes said Calivil was an obvious opponent for the Superoos in Saturday’s encounters “as our longest rivals and nearest neighbours”.

Forbes was among the cheering supporters back in 2009 when Mitiamo ended Calivil’s sixyear flag domination of the league.

His’ widow Faye has donated special medallions that will be presented to the best players of each team in the senior and reserves football and A Grade netball.

And making themselves available for football selection will be three of Forbes’ grandsons Trent, Ben and Josh - who have been cleared to

“Forbesy was such an icon for our club and league,” Hynes said.

“When he retired and moved back to Mitiamo, he would be at training every Thursday night and at every game. He was a real people’s person.”

The John Forbes Medal is presented to best and fairest in the league’s reserves football competition and the Mitiamo ground was named John Forbes Oval in 2017.

Forbes was instrumental in setting up the Blue Ribbon Foundation and fundraising to support public hospitals. He numbered some of Australia’s best athletes among his close friends. His collection of sporting memorabilia amassed in part while working as a sponsorship manager for Puma for 22 years is now displayed at Rochester.

Hynes said a number of ex-AFL umpires were expected to be guest speakers at Saturday’s post-match function.
