CONNECTOR PLAN FOR INTERSTATE ‘REALIABLE ENERGY’ LINK
POWERHOUSE BID
NORTHERN Victoria could be a powerhouse in renewable energy supply with a transmission line through the Loddon Shire named the preferred option for an interstate connection. Donald McGauchie, of Prairie West, has backed Friday’s announcement from the Australian Energy Market Operator and Transgrid
The VNI West proposed line would run a high capacity 500 kilovolt double-circuit overhead transmission line connecting Western Renewables Link at Ballarat with a new Project EnergyConnect terminal station at Dinawan, between Jerilderie and Coleambally Mr McGauchie said the preferred Bendigo-Kerang route would put an emphasis on reliable energy supplies. “It should have happened five
years ago. Brown coal is being wound back and now we’re running out of power,” Mr McGauchie said. He said that approvals were already in place for properties in the Loddon Shire to contribute three gigawatts to the interstate connector with the potential to at least double inputs if the project proceeds with a 2031 completion. “That would be a significant economic boost for the region,:
he said. “It is imperative that all governments work effectively together to develop and execute a detailed transition plan to allow for additional renewable energy generation, supported by efficient and sustainable baseload power generation capability. “The Kerang to Bendigo 220kv transmission line runs through our property and we have joined with Pacific Hydro as landowner
partners in a proposed 240MW solar generation project on our property, which has received community support and local government planning approval.” AEMO said the proposed interconnector would unlock clean, lowest-cost electricity from existing and future renewable energy zones in Victoria and New South Wales. AEMO has opened the proposal for community feedback.
LAKE LIFE KEVIN Sutton was on the job again at Little Lake Boort on Saturday as volunteers continue their winter beautification and improvement works project. Kevin (main picture) was part of the day’s crew raking top soil along the lake banks that have been strengthened with rocks during the program. He was joined by lake management committee chairman Neil Beattie who says works are expected to finish within weeks. LH PHOTOS
