increases by 360,000 birds at the broiler farm.

Plans for the company’s third stage at its site 5km from town comes as construction is nearing completion on a doubling of the farm’s current capacity.

Owner Jarrod Travanion said

the farm would grow capacity for low-density, free-range breeding to more than one million birds, meeting RSPCA bare bird requirements, supplied to Bendigo-based Hazeldenes .

He said Southern Riverlands Poultry had a long-time con-

tract with Hazeldene that also has several Loddon sites..

Mr Travanion said work on stage two started a year ago and the company now employed seven full-time staff.

“This will increase by a further three when the latest (eight-shed) work approved is completed plus casual staff,” Mr Travanion said.

Council received five objections to the proposal including concerns about increased traffic, rubbish and the potential

for odour to come from the site. Shire officers said in their report that previous odour issues at the broiler farm had been addressed.

Director operations Steven Phillips told council that meetings had been held between objectors and the company. He said Southern Riverlands Poultry was co-operative with local residents in advancing plans.

Final plans for stage three are to be given to council for endorsement.

COMMUNITIES across the Loddon have honoured service of generations over more than 100 years at ANZAC Day ceremonies on Sunday.

Veterans from post-World War Two conflicts shared the day of tribute with community leaders, school children and families.

Among them were Arthur Alsop, a Korean War veteran, and (inset)) Inglewood junior footballers Tyler Murphy and Jackson Luckman and Bridgewater Primary School’s acting principal Julie Ladd with Rylea Bailey and Emily Bailey.

RSL sub-branch and commemorative service organisers were pleased with strong attendance and participation after 2020 services were cancelled by COVID restrictions.

The boys from Ballarat Fire Brigade Cricket Club made their annual pilgrimage to the Loddon last weekend - cheering on Bridgewater from over the fence in the footy and netball. Club prez Brett interrupted his focus on play to explain the lads have been coming here for five years (okay four if you forget last year’s non-appearance).

They deck themselves out in the club merch for the occasion. And why, says prez Brett: “It’s the three Ps ... good pies, good p... and good pub”.

We hear they had a good time.

HE appearance of the Ballarat boys was a bit of a throwback to the rough and tumble days of football and barracking, It wasn’t all that long ago when every week there would be players fronting the tribunal to plead innocence or loss of memory of an incident seen by an umpire. In those days before videos, powers of pursuasive eloquence were needed if there was a risk of the star recruit missing a crucial clash. We remember one interleague clash six hours from home for one team and the league’s own boundary umpire reporting one of “his” players. The bus departure was delayed two hours while the tribunal sat (and dismissed the

PYRAMID Hill’s groundbreaking waste disposal test site is emerging on the local landscape, The dome-shape building being erected by Advanced Energy Tech can now be seen around the district.

Advanced Energy Tech directors Drew Chislett and Adam Riley imported and modified specialist plant from Canada to develop a local solution to transform waste into a range of useful resources that can be reused, recycled or remade.

They have been meeting local groups and talking with residents to let people know what the facility can offer the local community and Drew says: “It’s now time to invite

residents, business owners and others interested in Pyramid Hill to more formally meet with us.”

“We know there are people who live in this community who have a genuine interest in waste to resource recovery and want to become involved.

“There are lots of views about how to ensure this new technology works for rural communities and we want to find ways to reach out to those views.

“The demonstration facility will show the process of gasification on a range of feed stocks and provide data to assist businesses and industry as well as show benefits for rural communities.”

HESE modern meters are a quantum leap from the world’s first parking meter, known as Park-O-Meter No. 1, installed on the south-east corner of what was then First Street and Robinson Avenue in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on July 16, 1935. The parking meter was the brainchild of a man named Carl C. Magee, who had moved to Oklahoma City from New Mexico in 1927. It took 20 years for the meters to arrive in Australia and the “honour” went to Hobart where they became operational on ... April 1, 1955.

Spanner Man: passing of a Loddon treasure JOHN “The Spanner Man” Piccoli has died suddenly, aged 80.

He was the creator of scores of sculptures made from spanners that attracted thousands of visitors to Boort every year.

Contracting polio as a child, John became known as “Spanner Man” for his works of art at Spanner Man Sculpture Garden and special works installed around Lake Boort.

He would source old spanners from sales and swap meets to then weld into sculptures of animals and birds, trees and giant spanners. John once said he never paid more than $2 for a spanner.

“I’ve bought 126,000 spanners, and I’ve used roughly 95,000,” he said. “I buy them all at swap meets. Ninety-five per cent of the ones I buy are rusty old spanners - I love that,” he told an interviewer in 2018.

His tallest sculpture, The Marlin, was more than seven metres tall, weighed 1200kg and was made from 3500 spanners.

Although confined to a wheelchair most of his life, John was still at work welding until his passing.

Among those paying tributes have been from Loddon Mayor Neil Beattie and Paul Haw who took tour groups to the garden since it opened to the public in 2009.

Both praised his creativity and contributions to bring people to Boort and Loddon. They said the sculptures would be a lasting legacy to John’s life.

“Together with his wife Sonia, John was responsible for the growth of tourism and coach tours to our northern part of the shire with people

coming to see his amazing spanner sculptures and enjoy the beautiful gardens at their home,” said Cr Beattie.

“John, who was in a wheelchair since childhood, was an inspiration to so many, including to other people with a disability.

“John never let his disability stop him – whether it was working the farm, creating his magnificent sculptures, giving tours, or helping promote local tourism in our shire.”

Undaunted by the effects

Council keeps rise at cap LODDON Shire rates will rise by the State Government imposed cap of 1.5 per cent under a draft budget presented to councillors on Tuesday.

The budget includes a rate differential of 12 per cent for farm properties.

Council proposes spending almost $7 million on capital works - $3 million allocated for roads - and remain debt free.

Waste service charges are recommended to increase 10 per cent.

Council will be seeking public comment on its draft budget before adoption.

Since opening to the public, his sculpture garden gained enourmous popularity and has attracted more than 10,000 visitors a year.

In 2020, the garden received a TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice award.

His creations have been showcased in national publications, on television and radio.

A retired farmer, John and Sonia lived on land selected in 1876 by his grandfather. John ran the farm from age 18.

John is survived by wife Sonia, Andrew, Ferena, Sophia and Brigitte and their families.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow in Boort Memorial Hall.

Next week’s Loddon Herald will have a special tribute to the genius of “Spanner Man”.

$22m Calder work deal THE FEDERAL Government on Monday announced the unlocking of more than $22 million for works on the Calder Highway, including overtaking lanes between Bridgewater and Marong.

The north and southbound lanes are among five priority upgrades and scoping and development works on the Calder between Melbourne and Mildura.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack: “These projects on the Calder Highway are part of the Australian Government’s commitment to improving safety and productivity on the Melbourne to Mildura corridor under our Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.”

Member for Mallee Anne Webster said the funding approval had included $4.3 million for scoping and development works to identify options for further funding along the corridor.

Other works will include a south-bound overtaking lane between Hattah and Ouyen.

Early rise sign of solemn gratitude

By CHRIS EARL FROM dawn on ANZAC morning, people gathered at memorials across the Loddon expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made by generations of young Australians.

Local communities were able to once more be together - no crowd restrictions, unlike Melbourne.

And they came as families, members of community organisations, to support and thank veterans.

The defining defeat of Australian and New Zealand soldiers at Gallipoli was at the heart of commemorations.

But so, too, were other significant anniversaries in Australia’s contribution to upholding freedom and democracy.

The crowd at Inglewood was reminded this year marks the 120th anniversary of the end of the Boer War - a conflict that saw colonies send their men to war, those same men to return as citizens of a new federated nation.

Dawn services at Bridgewater and Wedderburn started the day of observance across the Loddon .

Those services set a theme

Bridgewater’s Jaymee Bailey, a student at Creek Street Christian School, gave a reading as the sun started to peak above the horizon.

The crisp morning air - actually for ANZAC Day it was reasonably mild - allowed the bugle calls of Last Post and Rouse to echo far beyond the memorials.

While crowd numbers at dawn services were close to those of pre-COVID, others again continued the augmented tradition started last year of holding driveway or front gate vigils.

The dawn services were followed by gunfire breakfasts with inner-warming ruminfused coffee, another tradition passed on from soldiers at Gallipoli and on the Western Front more than a century ago.

Where the community had stood in silent support of veterans during the services, they were on the front line dispensing refreshments with military precision and humour following formal services throughout the day.

That’s where the stories were told, re-told and shared with family and friends, with the school children who had earlier placed wreaths at memorials and put into greater context teachings in the classroom over recent weeks.

The wreaths and freshly picked players will add colour to grey memorials in our local towns and districts for a few weeks. Some will wilt and blow away ... but the memories guiding our future will stay strong.

THE next generation was to the fore at Korong Vale’s commemorative service in Borella Park.

Wedderburn College student Jake Murphy (above) sounded the Last Post and Rouse while college captain Kelsey Nisbet (below right) was one of the speakers at the service.

They joined members of the local fire brigade and other organisations to honour the service of local people Among those present were Vietnam War veterans including Jim Watson (below right), fellow ex-navalmen Bob McKenzie and Garry Evans and former soldiers Trevor Collins and Bert Kohte.

Organised by Wedderburn-Korong Vale RSL sub-branch, the service was followed by morning tea in the mechanics’ institute hall.

IT WAS back to the streets for the Inglewood community on ANZAC Day. With a detachment of air force cadets in front, veterans, school students and community representatives marched from Brooke Street to the memorial.

Without drums beating or trumpets heralding, they were diligent in keeping step, the only beat missed was last year’s service.

It was the 100th time the memorial has been the centre-

piece of ANZAC commemorations - the centenary of its uveiling is in December.

RSL sub-branch president Mick Hobson said it was wonderful to see a large gathering, compared with 2020 when just five people were allowed to attend.

Guest speaker Jamie Duncan shared his family connections with the ANZAC spirit and the importance of community in supporting people.

He said the war memorial

was where a community could remember, a space for veterans to meet and a valuable link for families.

The writer said ANZAC Day was about community remembering sacrifices, sharing stories and memories and hopefully not repeating the past.

Special thanks was given to bugler Josh Akers. Students from Inglewood Primary and St Mary’s schools combined to lead more than 150 people in singing the National Anthem.

Terry talks of service by town’s people A GUARD of honour was formed by the local CERT team and fire brigade as people walked into Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall for Sunday’s service.

Hall president, returned soldier and co-ordinator of the service Ron Peacock welcomed people to the service that followed the wreath laying.

This year’s service had a naval theme with the singing of the hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save in recognition of the guest speaker Terry James who spent 24 years in the Royal Australian Navy.

Terry’s talk intertwined the stories of Ron Peacock, local Jack Kelly as well as his own story and related back to the young ANZACs who landed at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.

Terry reflected how a young Ron was conscripted to the army and Ron’s time in Vietnam and in later times served overseas again but this time as a chaplain in Rwanda and Afghanistan.

He also highlighted Jack Kelly whose story has just been painted on a mural at the back of the museum. Jack served on HMAS Canberra which was sunk during the Battle of Savo Island in the Solomon Islands during the Guadalcanal campaign in World War Two.

More than 150 people attended in perfect weather conditions with Mayor Neil Beattie laying a wreath on behalf of the Loddon Shire.

Alan Streader, 96, continued his decades of service as bugler for the service. He had last week also sounded the Last Post for the local school’s ANZAC service.

Boort RSL sub-branch moved the town’s service outdoors this year due to COVID restrictions.

Following the service, its museum was popular with people studying history of Boort soldiers. Boort lost 52 soldiers due to war.

A later barbecue in Nolens Park was popular.

Jack survived and returned to Pyramid Hill.

Terry then talked about his own life and how he went into the navy as an apprentice and went onto become a lieutenant.

He spent 24 years in the navy and the highlight for him was recruiting people to the Royal Australian Navy Terry stressed that himself, Ron Peacock and Jack Kelly

were all ordinary people just like the ANZACs who ended up in extraordinary circumstances.

In his address, Terry talked of never forgetting the courage that those soldiers faced.

In turning to the many school children present at the service, Terry stated in order to stop war, it starts with children. He implored the children to be kind to each other.

He said leaders were needed and adults must set an example and always show kindness and compassion to others. Terry reminded everyone present that it was not a big ask when it was considered what the ANZACS went through.

The service concluded with the National Anthems of New Zealand and Australian followed by Julie Kerr sounding the Last Post and Rouse.

Community gathers at memorial FORMER residents joined the Newbridge community for Sunday’s ANZAC service at the town’s war memorial.

The local Country Women’s Association branch organised the commemoration that was attended by more than 30 people.

Among the organisers were Gillian Goldsworthy and president Jenny Fryer (pictured). Also assisting to conduct the service was treasurer Julie Ramsay.

The reading of The Last Man from Dunolly, former Inglewood resident Michael Whittle’s song about World War One, was particularly appropriate with re-enactment Light Horse riders from Dunolly at the service.

POLICE STATION OPENING

Community partnership part of tradition, says force chief THE new Wedderburn police station would help maintain the tradition of police working closely with the community, Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said last week.

Chief Commissioner Patton was joined by police from Loddon stations at the formal opening of the station.

He spoke of a back-to-basics approach to local policing, understanding community safety and local issues.

Cheif Commissioner Patton said the new station provided access and safety to officers and the community.

Although operational since December 2018, last week’s ceremony saw Acting Police And Emergency Services Minister Danny Pearson unveil a plaque before inspecting the station.

Mr Pearson said the station allowed for a well-resourced police presence and a safe working area.

“The police will always be part of this great community,” he said.

A smoking ceremony was conducted by Dja Dja Wurrung elder Paulie Ugle before the official opening that was also attended by Ripon MP Louise Staley.

New flags to fly outside the station were presented by Mr Pearson, Ms Staley and Ms Ugle.

IN BRIEF Tree probe AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into the bulldozing of native trees near Korong Vale.

The removal of trees and vegetation was reported to Loddon Shire Council and government departments last week.

The Department of Transport director for Loddon Mallee Melanie Hotton said: ““We’re aware of the removal of trees and other vegetation in Korong Vale and along Boort-Wedderburn Road.”

Council’s director operation Steve Phillips said: “Council is working with several other government authorities in relation to this matter. Council is unable to provide any further comment due to the ongoing investigation.”

Ms Hotton said her department continued to work with the council, DELWP, and North Central Catchment Management Authority “while investigations are underway”.

The landowner told the Loddon Herald he placed importance on compliance and continued to have discussions with relevant authorities.

Tourism leave LODDON Shire tourism manager Robyn Vella will take leave from the role for five months from next month.

Robyn made the announcement at the recent Loddon Business Network function. Shelby Hutchinson will act in the role.

Top brass connection with longest serving officer THERE was a sense of homecoming for Victoria Police assisant commissioner Cindy Millen at the officially opening of Wedderburn police station.

He father Lance grew up in Wedderburn and married the daughter of Sen. Constable Max Coates who was in charge of the station from 1962 to 1986.

Max is recorded as the longest-serving police officer in the town since the first constable was stationed there in 1870.

Cindy still has family in the district and has returned to the

town many times, recalling last week fond memories of school holidays in Wedderburn.

And the visit was also a chance to catch up with one of her father’s school friends, Loddon Shire councillor Gavan Holt.

Gavan and Lance went to school together and the pair exchanged many stories of their families together over the years. “We were great mates all through school and it was wonderful to see Cindy here as one of the state’s top police officers,” Gavan said.

GOULBURN-MURRAY Water wants customers to think about options for any unused water they may have left in allocation accounts.

For those who won’t use their water allocation by June 30 2021, there are a number of options available.

Customers can keep some or all of their unused water allocation and take it into the next irrigation season – a process known as carryover.

Not only do her and Ian run Simply Tomatoes, they also have Country Wool Bedding (previously known as Aussie Wool QuiltsBoort) and Woolly Warmers.

It all started with Rhea Early Mother’s Day celebrations can be dated back to the spring celebrations to honor Rhea, the Mother of the Gods, in ancient Greek civilisation, according to some sources.

Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptised, although it now also celebrates motherhood in modern times.

The modern-day origins of Mother’s Day can be attributed to two women – Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis, who were important in establishing the tradition in the United States.

Around 1870, Julia Ward Howe called for Mother’s Day to be celebrated each year. It continued to be held in Boston for about 10 years under her sponsorship, but died out after that. Other sources say that Juliet Calhoun Blakely initiated Mother’s Day in Albion, Michigan, in the late 1800s. Her sons paid tribute to her each year and urged others to honor their mothers.

In 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother’s Day celebration in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, in Grafton, West Virginia. In 1908, she played a key role in arranging a church service that attracted 407 children and their mothers. A Mother’s Day International Association was founded in 1912 to promote the holiday in other countries.

LODDON residents will again by striding out for a good cause on Mother’s Day. Bridgewater will host the Mother’s Day Classic, along with other communities across Australia, raising funds for breast cancer research.

The Bridgewater-on-Loddon event is in its ninth year and offers participants a 3km and 5km walk and run!

The course will take you through the quiet streets of town to the Loddon River where participants in the classic will enjoy the beautiful scenery along rejuvenated river tracks.

Strong finish gets points SKILL errors and a goal-less third term married Wedderburn’s 22-point victory over Charlton in Saturday’s North Central league clash.

The contest between the Navies and the Redbacks was anything but an enthralling encounter save for the Navies strong third term which saw scores level at the last break.

Thankfully a five-goal final term saw them victorious.

The number of skill errors both by foot and hand detract-

ed from the spectacle as players on both sides found difficulty getting good kicks away.

AROUND THE LINKS BOORT THE first stroke competition for the year took place on Saturday and it was pleasing to have a dozen players turn up.

After spending countless hours helping to clean up and prepare the course over the previous few months, Kevin Linehan earned a deserving win with his best score for many years.

His 81 off the stick, with nett 63, blitzed the field easily, leaving Doug Couper, Andrew Kane and Ray Taylor to collect the minor prizes in the ball run.

Doug and Andrew also collected nearest-the-pin awards, as did president Stuart Tweddle, while ladies Dot Beattie and Gaye Sim knocked it closer on two of the par threes than anyone else did for the week.

This round also concluded the D. and A. Lanyon Fencing award for the men for the month of April.

With consistently solid performances each week, it was Doug Couper who finished on top of the eclectic scores on 50, with Damien and Keven tied for runners-up on 47.

This Saturday will see a return to a stableford event.

Nonagenarian in winning team MORE THAN 80 players competed in Inglewood Bowling Club’s invitation medley tournament last week.

They came from Boort, Pyramid Hill, Wedderburn, Inglewood, Woodbury, Bendigo East, Kangaroo Flat, White Hills, Harcourt, Eaglehawk, South Bendigo and Golden Square clubs.

Winners were Marg Kirkpatrick, Ann Howe, Elaine Bowland and Irene Petering, all from South Bendigo.

Irene is aged 93 and Inglewood bowler Helen Leech said: “With my first hand experience, I can assure you she plays a mean game of bowls.”

Runners-up were Judy Chapman (Golden Square), Carol Patching (Eaglehawk), Lorraine Rowley (Inglewood) and Gelma Taylor (Golden Square).

The greenkeepers had the greens running beautifully, and the men cooked a barbecue lunch for the competitors.

The tournament was sponsored by Bendigo Bank and the Loddon Shire.

In the seniors, Lachlan Peters won bowling honours with 29 wickets and was named cricketer of year with 386 points.

ALL EYES will be on ladder leaders Pyramid Hill this round when they travel to Marong.

Home team Panthers systematically saw off the previously fancied Maiden Gully YCW last round.

But with Pyramid Hill firing around the ground and the goalface accuracy of Dickens and George continuing, the northern visitors should advance before the much-anticipated clashes with Bridgewater and Mitiamo.

The season account should be opened by Bears Lagoon Serpentine against Inglewood.

They’ve had a tough opening draw but on form are a good notch above other sides yet to register a win.

Serp’s defenders have carried much of the workload in the first three rounds. The forwards should be primed to step up on Saturday.

Bridgewater will surely advance into third spot after this round and start bridging the percentage gap after having the bye in round one.

NORTH CENTRAL THIS WEEK A JUMP into second spot should have Wedderburn Redbacks primed to increase their buffer on the ladder.

The Redbacks play BirchipWatchem at home and cannot risk any one-quarter fadeouts.

The Bulls have a huge percentage but sit two premiership points behind the Redbacks who were troubled again last round, failing to add majors in the third quarter.

A win at Donaldson Park on Saturday can have the Redbacks securely in second spot.

Boort will be looking for another competitive effort against Wycheproof Narraport. The Magpies are not getting ahead of themselves but have the chance to climb another spot or two.

Courageous Connor praises younger brigade BLUES’ ruckman Connor Logan on Saturday became the first Inglewood player to win the Eddie Harrison Memorial Medal.

Awarded by umpires to the most courageous player in the ANZAC weekend clash between Inglewood and Bridgewater, the medal honours

the World War Two serviceman who was part of flag teams with the two clubs.

His widow Merle, RSL sub-branch president Mick Hobson and grandson Anthony presented the medal to a surprised Connor after the game.

And despite the scoreboard com-

prehensively giving match points to Bridgewater, the second season big man had praise for the Blues’ young brigade of players.

“Some are only 17 or 18 ... the development of our young players is happening,” said Logan who worked the ground hard all day.

MEAN BOYS BUT ...

Pressure test pass remains challenge

BRIDGEWATER has convinced spectators they are genuine finals contenders after a comprenhensive 207-point victory on Saturday.

The Mean Mean machine had greater speed, strength and experience compared with crossriver rivals Inglewood in the Loddon Valley football clash.

They ran the ball well, created the loose man and space and achieved quick turnovers on occasions when the Blues popped up with glimpses of youthful optimism.

But ... and there were a few on Saturday for the Mean Machine to earn flag favouritism.

Joshua Martyn and Darren Clutton were among danger forwards for the home team, when the Blues challenged in defence.

In the second term - one of two 10-goal quarters for the Mean Machine - Inglewood also chimed in with two goals and their best period of play on the scoreboard.

More worrying for Bridgewater was an atrocious start

By CHRIS EARL to the last term. Players had talked during the final break huddle of coming home strongly and kicking 40 goals.

They peppered the Dunollyend goals for more than 10 minutes to add just nine behinds to the scoreboard (one was rushed).

There was frenetic pressure as Inglewood’s defence refused to meekly capitulate, they just struggled all day to penetrate inside their forward 50.

The Mean Machine’s scoreboard breakthrough came from Martyn. He repeated the feat less than two minutes later, an encore of the excitement in opening minutes of the second term - he was not just kicking goals, he was creating opportunities up forward all day.

There’s no doubt Bridgewater are just warming up for six months of solid football.

The Mean Machine are clearly in the upper echelon this season - there’re class. How much we’ll know for sure as they face Marong, Maiden Gully. Mitiamo and Pyramid Hill from May 15.
