VAX EMERGENCY By CHRIS EARL

THE Loddon’s only State Emergency Service Unit will be without active volunteers from midnight Saturday. Members of the Wedderburn unit have been unable to conduct training, meetings and unit business, including banking, for more than a month because they are not triple vaccinated against COVID-19.

SES UNIT VOLUNTEERS SENT OFF ‘ON LEAVE’

They could be barred from responding to accidents and emergencies after this weekend, leaving an area stretching almost to Wycheproof, Kerang and Dunolly without nearby SES assistance. “We won’t even be allowed to go and remove a fallen branch

from the road,” said controller Paul Gordon-Cooke. Mr Gordon-Cooke said volunteers were being made to meet the same requirements of health workers despite the vaccination economy ending with the dramatic easing of COVID vaccination manadates last week.

“We are not anti-vax ... our members are double vaxed but don’t want to have their third, or booster, shot at the moment,” he said. “We had an email last week saying that if we’re not triple vaxed by the end of the month, we will be classed as volunteers on leave. I fear many smaller units like ours will fall in a heap.” SES regional chiefs are expected to meet local members today. All Victoria State Emergency Service volunteers and staff are part of the Victorian Govern-

ment COVID-19 three-dose mandatory vaccination, for specified workers. A spokesperson said: “The VICSES Wedderburn unit is already operating on dual-response arrangements. “This will continue beyond this weekend with neighbouring units continuing to support local capacity. Therefore it is unlikely there will be any further impact on operational response and the Wedderburn community and surrounds continue to be serviced by VICSES.”

ANZAC Day commemoration services across the Loddon were well attended on Monday. Louise Beer was among residents at the service in Inglewood. One of the largest crowds in many years was seen at Korong Vale when more than 100 people gathered in Borella Park while Tarnagulla held its first-ever Dawn Service. REPORTS, PHOTOS PAGES 4 & 5

CALIVIL’S Glen Ray gives Loddon Mayor Dan Straub an introduction to playing the bagpipes at the first Celtic Connections celebration in Bridgewater on Sunday attended by more than 200 people. Kooyoora Women’s Network organised the day with Scottish and Irish music swirling around the old railway station and craft and food stalls lined the street. STORY - PAGE 6
