Rolling with restrictions VOLUNTEERS swung into action at Serpentine on Saturday morning preparing salad rolls for a pop-up shop after the sudden State Government direction to abandon weekend sport. The local football-netball club had been set to host the first Loddon Valley league final with pies, pasties, salad rolls and barbecue meat ready to feed players and parents. Canteen manager Sarah Byrnes quickly brought her volunteer team together and by 11am locals had ordered and picked up lunches and dinners. “We had the food ready, we didn’t want to waste it,” she said. “Everyone has been amazing at such short notice. “We’ve made up more than 100 salad rolls and they’re a sell out. The barbecue meat will just stay in the freezer.”

n COVID SAFETY LIFTOUT - PAGES 9-12 terrible and this time people seem a bit more frightened,” said Wedderburn cafe owner Julie Benaim. “There’s only so much you can put back in the freezer.

“It was a shocking way they brought in this latest lockdown for country towns ... this one has really hit people. You just can’t plan ahead.”

Inglewood IGA’s Peter Moore said there was a flurry of shoppers in the hours after Saturday’s announcement. “We were quite busy as people quickly stocked up.” He said the store continued to check for compliance with restrictions and “we’re cleaning regularly to keep the public and our staff safe”. Major sporting events across

the Loddon, already postponed at least once, have been impacted including the Pyramid Hill golf tournament. But the region’s third on-property merino ram sale tomorrow at Willera stud, Serpentine, will go ahead. The sudden lockdown now has country communities with the same restrictions as Melbourne, except for the night curfew, until September 2.
