Haystack fires FIRE brigades have attended three haystack fires across the district in the past week.

Alerts were issued for fires at Leichardt on Thursday, Browns Road in Boort and Calivil over the weekend.

Brews flowing again in Tarna COFFEE is coming back onto the menu in Tarnagulla.

Post office owner Mary Wollmering has just finished reconfiguring the historic building to serve coffee and snacks to locals and visitors during the week.

And Kelly Whitton, who had

been operating the Tarnagulla Supply Store, will next month set up on weekends in the town’s community centre cafe that has been vacant since late last year.

Flags are waving AUSTRALIAN flags will be flying with pride when Loddon communities celebrate the national day tomorrow.

Activities are planned in all towns across the Loddon Shire from breakfast in Bridgewater at 8pm to the day’s final events in the evening at Tarnagulla and Pyramid Hill.

Lions clubs will be cooking up sausages at Inglewood and Wedderburn while the shire’s five swimming pools will have free entry all day.

Loddon Shire late Tuesday announced that the Citizen of the Year for 2024 is Jude Raftis and the Young Citizen is Samantha Bewley, both of Wedderburn.

Jude has been involved with local groups for many decades, including Lions, netball and chairing the sub-committee pushing for an aged care facility in the town.

Samanatha is a young NDIS support worker and last year received a BLG Youth Award.

Ward community service award recipients this year are Marjory Potter (Boort), Jany Clutton (Inglewood), James Metelmann (Tarnagulla), Coral Maxted (Terrick) and Margaret Bentley (Wedderburn).

They will receive their awards are tomorrow’s ceremonies.

COUNCIL BRIEFS Tender awarded A SECTION of the PyramidYarraberb Road will be upgraded after Loddon Shire Council on Tuesday awarded a contract for work. Operations director Steve Phillips said work on the 2.6km section at the southern end of the road near Campbells Forest would include three sections of flood-damaged road and replacement of some culverts. Mr Phillips said the road was one of the shire’s busiest. Works will be funded by unspent money through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

TERRICK Ward councillor Dan Straub told Tuesday’s Loddon Shire Council meeting future flood studies should consider the impact on agricultural land.

Cr Straub said the summer storm floods had heightened issues with the community drain plan and he hoped North Central Catchment Management Authority studies would deliver answers through flood plains assessments.

Policy updates LODDON Shire Council has adopted an updated privacy policy. Councillors on Tuesday also accepted the new version of the shire’s risk management documents.

Care site hived off for station

LAND earmarked for an aged care facility in Wedderburn could be used for the town’s permanent ambulance station.

Loddon Shire councillors on Tuesday voted to sell part of the Wilson Street site to Ambulance Victoria.

The sale has been backed by the town’s Lions Club that continues to raise funds and push for an aged care facility.

Club secretary Jon Chandler wrote to council saying the club agreed with the construction of an ambulance station on part of the site adjoining the tourist information centre and community house.

“The Lions Club are continuing to work with Martha Haylett, Inglewood and District Health Service and other key stakeholders to establish a supported residential service facility in Wedderburn.

“We thank council for providing the necessary land dimensions for the SRS and look forward to working co-operatively to ensure that this vital facility is provided for the Wedderburn community.”

Ambulance Victoria has based its Wedderburn services out of the former police station and court house complex while searching for a site to build a permanent station.

Ambulance Victoria told council it respected the commitment to the community and the Lions Club proposal for an aged care facility on the former Wedderburn Primary School site and “believes we can work together for both proposals to comple-

Surplus land will be sold LODDON Shire Council plans to sell surplus land in Inglewood, Borung and Boort.

Councillors on Tuesday accepted officer recommendations to dispose of the properties.

They are three lots in Brooke Street Inglewood to be consolidated into a single parcel, Bell Street Borung currently zoned residential and separate sites in Godfrey Street Boort and on Boort-Charlton Road Boort.

The Charlton Road property had been purchased by council as future potential industrial land and is zoned farming.

The Godfrey Street property is zoned township.

The land will be sold at a price within 10 per cent of valuation.

the land was in an optimal location, adjacent to the community centre and medical centre.

“Strategically, this site is also within a central precinct to all emergency services. AV’s view is that the site will enable community connectivity and deliver exceptional emergency callout for the best possible care,” according to the report considered by councillors on Tuesday.

“The land is required for AVs delivery of a self-funded initiative to protect lives and our

community. Funding has been approved to acquire land, which will then lead to funding approvals for future branch project development. It is important to secure a suitable site within AVs identified target zone to meet service delivery for a projected 50-year lifecycle.”

Council will advertise the proposed sale of land and if no objections are received, will sell it to Ambulance Victoria at a price within 10 per cent of the valuation.

LODDON Shire Council approved a planning permit to build a house on a 4.5-hectare farm block on the outskirts of Newbridge.

Esther and Ken Cross will move a weatherboard house to the Somerset Lane property after councillors on Tuesday accepted an officer recommendation.

One neighbour had objected to the application saying that the view of bushland from their property had already been affected by a triple garage and a permanent residence “is going too far”.

Councillors were told the house would not adversely impact farming activities.

Bell rings for start of school year HUNDREDS of youngsters across the Loddon are in the final days of their summer break before the school year starts next week.

Teachers officially start their preparation for class work on Monday with secondary students having their first day of school on Tuesday, Wedderburn College is among local schools where there is expected to be an increase in enrolment.

Primary school students will have staggered starts from Tuesday.

At Bridgewater, the school will have its first jump in enrolment for several years.

looking forward to a fabulous year ahead with four prep students. This is the largest group we’ve had in quite some time.”

Among new faces at Loddon schools will be new Boort principal Todd Woodfine who comes into the role following the retirement of Lee-Anne Sherwell after eight years in the role.

Among major milestones in schools this year will be the 150th anniversary at Tarnagulla. And works are expected to start on multi-million upgrades announced by the State Government for Wedderburn College and East Loddon P12 College while plans will emerge for the child care centre in Wedderburn.

Mayor misses shire’s first meeting of 2024 LODDON Mayor Gavan Holt was absent from yesterday’s first meeting of councillors for 2024.

Cr Holt, who was elected for a seventh time as shire mayor last November, was an apology for the meeting. No statement was made about his absence.

Instead, Inglewood Ward’s Cr Wendy Murphy read the opening oath of affirmation and was then elected acting mayor for the meeting.

Cr Murphy had been unsuccessful last November in winning the top spot. She lost to Cr Holt on a 3-2 vote of councillors.

Cr Holt was first elected to Loddon Shire Council in 2003.

Council steps in to fill VEC ward information gap LODDON Shire Council will pick up the tab to make sure residents know details of the Victorian Electoral Commission review of ward boundaries.

The VEC last week said it would only promote information sessions on the review in Melbourne media but left the door open for council to request local awareness campaigns, organised by the VEC but billed to the shire.

“The VEC will also place geo-targeted sponsored social media advertisements for councils that choose this,” said VEC communication manager Marie Guerin.

Loddon Shire this week said: “Council will be supporting the VEC information

and advertising campaign regarding the ward boundary review (including information sessions) via our usual channels, including media releases, the weekly Mayoral Column, our weekly advertisement in the Loddon Herald and council’s social media channels.”

The VEC review of boundaries for the Boort, Inglewood, Tarnagulla, Terrick and Wedderburn Wards will start on February 21. “We will be hosting information sessions ahead of that date, to explain the process,” the VEC said last week.

Recommended boundary changes will need to be approved by the State Government before October’s elections.

Farm cruelty claim probe continues AGRICULTURE Victoria’s investigation into allegations of cruelty at a Newbridge farm are still to finish.

The department said last week it would not make any further statements while the probe continued.

Allegations against the Halal Centre of Australia-linked Avicenna farm escalated with claims of dead sheep on the property at Christmas.

The 246-hectare property has been owned by Western Fruit and Vegetables, Tarneit, since October 2021, with Trustworthy Nominees Pty Ltd listed as the mortgagee.

Avicenna Farms is part of a sheep farming and breeding program by Singaporebased HalalXpert Pte Ltd, Wonderz Pty Ltd and Malaysia-based ARK Group of Companies Pte Ltd. Companies contacted by the Loddon Herald have not responded to phone calls and emails.

Photographs of goats feeding on sprouted potatoes or potatoes still in plastic bags have also emerged over the past fortnight.

Loddon Shire is also investigating the clearance of native vegetation on the property without a permit.

Agriculture Victoria has not indicated when its investigation will be finished.

Levee bank land deal to be inked AN AGREEMENT between Loddon Shire and the Dja Dja Wurrung Corporation to build a flood levee bank on the outskirts of Boort is about to be sealed.

The flood mitigation project has been bogged down for more than four years.

Talks on a small strip of land beside Lake Boort and the compensation Loddon Shire Council will pay DJARRA to use the land have stymied stage two of flood mitigation works.

The roadblock to completion of $500,000 mitigation works funded by a 2016-2017 grant meant a bill in the tens of thousands of dollars to protect the town during the October 2022 flood emergency and hundreds of volunteer hours manning pumps and safeguarding homes.

Shire operations director Steve Phillips said on Monday: “Yes, negotiations have progressed. The agreement is being drafted by solicitors. There has been some delays due to availability of council staff, this is due to the level of attention required for the flood restoration program.”

Mr Phillips said no fees had yet been paid to DJAARA and the levee bank would proceed as planned.

In December 2022, DJAARA CEO Rodney Carter said: “Agreement has not yet been reached about the community benefit payable by law for the effect on traditional owners’ rights through the construction of the levee.

“The High Court of Australia’s Timber Creek decision provided some clarity about the calculation of compensation but uncertainty remains about numerous aspects of community benefit calculation.

“The State of Victoria unfortunately has not yet settled its position on the effect of the Timber Creek decision on benefits payable under the Land Use Activity Agreement which is part of the suite of agreements which make up the pioneering Recognition and Settlement Agreement between the State and Dja Dja Wurrung Clans in 2013.”

Cr Neil Beattie had earlier told councillors the town could not risk a future flood and said: “A permanent bank will give protection for the town forever.

“A lot of towns have levee banks but we just can’t seem to get ours across the line,” he said.

Coalition ditches treaty support THE Victorian Coalition was dumped its support of talks for a treaty with Aboriginal people.

Opposition shadow Aboriginal affairs minister and Murray Plains MP Peter Walsh made the announcement on Sunday.

Mr Walsh said changes were needed to the Traditional Owner Settlement Act and Cultural Heritage Act to reduce the burden of compliance on landowners.

“Let’s fix the system before we go any further.,” said Mr Walsh.

Hundreds walk in memory of Bella HUNDREDS of family and friends walked in memory of Salisbury West teenager Bella Canfield on Saturday.

They took part in the annual Walk for Bell marking the second anniversary of her death in a road accident near the family home.

Walkers made their way from the Bridgewater Cemetery along the Loddon River to the Bridgewater Hotel.

Funds raised from the walk and auctions at the hotel will be donated to emergency first responder charity Code 9.

Container Tin halls: the humble hubs crush rush

ANNE Morley has just a few dashes left to make around Victoria as she puts finishing touches to a book on the history of tin halls in country communities.

The retired Gippsland architect has 140 halls to feature in the publication - she started with 40 a decade ago.

“They are the most humble little buildings and unsung heroes,” Anne said.

Her field trips have taken in Derby where Rob Pollock showed her through the now-disused hall on the Calder Highway, attending a trivia night at Dingee and a 50th birthday at Fentons Creek.

Anne made a return visit last month when the Yando Hall was the setting for the district’s Christmas party.

“I first saw a tin hall in the Riverina in 2012 and I have been blown away by them ... they don’t have the elaborate facades that you see on halls in larger towns like Boort,” she said.

Paul Haw shared the story with Anne of the Yando Hall being transported from Oakvale in the 1950s.

“The teams brought it in a straight line - cutting the fence in front, the tractor pulling the hall through and then re-joining the fence before moving along,” Paul said.

“They took three days to shift the hall to Yando.”

Anne said each of the 140 halls was different “with their own personality and their own stories”.

Throughout the latter years of her architectural career, Anne developed an interest in heritage.

“I have always had a love for corrugated iron and the rustic scenes,” she said.

“Some halls don’t have any internal lining but every tin hall is a hub for local life ... 21st birthdays, parties, voting,” she said.

Anne started photographing the halls in 2017 but the COVID pandemic “put a big hole in the middle of my field work”.

Dingee was among the first halls visited. “It has the most amazing facade and the honour

boards for Dingee and Tandarra are great”, she said.

Anne said her research aimed to record the history within the walls of the halls.

“I’m also interested in the makes of pianos inside and where they came from.

“And the trademarks on tin they are also part of the history.”

Anne was able to make a visit to the Buckrabanyule Hall before honour boards were shifted to the nearby fire station and the

hall closed after more than 100 years in 2023.

Glenloth East, Lake Meran, Tragowel and Macorna have also been on her research itinerary and now Anne says she has just one hall left to visit before finishing the book.

“Every hall has its own little story,” she said. “Sadly, two have been demolished since I started writing the book.”

Anne hopes to have her publication in print later this year.

THE rush to return cans and bottles under the State Government’s container deposit scheme has continued to outstrip storage capacity at some depots.

The Government said last week that since November, 55,239 containers had been returned across the Loddon.

And the Boort depot has continued to call temporary halts to accepting returns while waiting for collection of bottles and cans by the zone’s scheme operator Visy.

The company did not respond to inquiries this week from the Loddon Herald on how often collections were being made from depots at Boort, Inglewood, Wedderburn and its future plans for collection frequency.

Bendigo Foodshare closed its depot for the final time last week.

“Zone Operator, Visy has ... acknowledged they underestimated the demand in regional Victoria and have not been able to equip us with enough bins to open for more than a few hours each week. This has resulted in us having to repeatedly turn the public away - something we wish we did not have to do,” said chair Sue Clarke.

Pharmacies join state trial VICTORIA PYRAMID HILL

PHARMACIES in Boort and Inglewood are part of State Government pilot to expand the role for community pharmacists.

During the pilot: Women can get more supply of a contraceptive pill they are already using without needing a prescription.

Women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections can access antibiotics for treatment.

Pharmacists can provide some vaccinations for travel and more public health vaccines including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, poliomyelitis and typhoid.

The Government says: The pilot aims to increase access to affordable primary health care, ensuring Victorians can get the healthcare they need quickly and locally.

“Like all Department of Health programs, safety and quality care will be prioritised throughout both the design and implementation process.”

People eligible to receive care from a community pharmacy under the pilot will pay the same as treatment from a bulkbilling GP. “You will pay no more than your cur-

rent PBS co-payment for medicines supplied under the pilot. This ensures that there is no additional financial barrier to accessing treatment,” the Health Department said of the pilot.

“As medication supplied as part of the pilot is not PBS funded, payment amounts do not contribute towards the PBS SafetyNet.” There are no charges to see the pharmacist to receive care for urinary tract infections or the resupply of the contraceptive pill The pilot runs until October.

Duck shoot political fallout minimal, says lobby group A 2024 duck hunting season would make a mockery of the State Parliament inquiry that recommended the abolition of hunting, according to Regional Victorians Opposed to Duck Shooting.

The lobby group said: “The Parliamentary Inquiry’s report was clear. Based on concerns for animal welfare, sustainability, and amenity, Victoria should follow the lead of other states and ban native bird hunting.

“Yet here we are in January and the regulator has once again prepared considerations for the next shoot.”

Members said they had transposed the number of duck shooters per postcode, to electorates.

“The results show the Labor Government is very unlikely to suffer an electoral backlash by banning native bird hunting,”

Broad wants insurance ‘black hole’ filled NORTHERN Victoria Region MP Gaelle Broad wants the State Government to fix a policy black hole with insurance, for farmers near large-scale solar and renewable energy projects.

Ms Broad said farmers neighbouring large renewable projects could be left out of pocket and risk losing everything if farmers were found to have started a fire with a chainsaw, slasher or grinder and it spread and caused damage and if they were found to be negligent.

“Some farmers have been told that to obtain the right level of insurance cover they will be facing a $50,000 rise in premiums each year,” she said.

Ms Broad said insurance matters were causing a lot of angst across Northern Victoria as plans for renewable energy projects popped up.

“The Government needs to rip the Bandaid off and ban it (hunting) like other

states, and now’s the time. Anything less than a complete cease-fire at this point will look weak, and pose the obvious question of why the Victorian government won’t listen to its own Parliamentary Inquiry let alone most Victorians”, said RVOTDS campaign director Elizabeth McCann.

“We calculate millions of taxpayer dollars have so far been afforded to bird hunting within the last decade. It’s not as if there aren’t other causes needing the funds. Bird hunting is a minority choice of recreation in which only around 14,000 folks (mainly men) take part, but which causes so many of the rest of us much angst,” she said.

Loddon Shire Council’s submission to last year’s inquiry called for the retention of the duck hunting season because of its economic and social benefits.

Opera moves to bigger stage THE premiere professional revival of Friedrich von Flotow’s opera Martha will be in Inglewood next month.

Lyster Opera Company has swapped to the larger Inglewood stage for the opening of its 2024 season.

Director Jamie Moffatt said the scale of the production was too big for its usual Loddon Shire venue in Tarnagulla.

“This is Lyster Opera’s first visit to Inglewood and is on a larger scale than previous productions, and features new costumes and sets,” he said.

“From the mid-19th century until the outbreak of World War One. Martha was amongst the most performed musical works in the world. Its unique blend of

comedy and romantic drama, coupled with a rich and beautiful score, endeared it to audiences worldwide, and it was said to be Queen Victoria’s favourite opera.

It was a direct influence on many composers, including Sir Arthur Sullivan, who conducted it many times.”

Jamie said its neglect in recent years was inexplicable.

“The score is amongst the most ravishing I have ever heard.

Apart from some instantly recognisable pieces, such as The Last Rose of Summer which is woven throughout, it is in turn funny and at times unbearably moving.

“Finding a cast to do it justice is a challenge, and we are so lucky to have singers who can bring it to life.”

Martha tells the story of two Irish noblewomen who, bored with life at the Queen’s Court, decide to disguise themselves as servants and visit the local fair at Richmond.

There they are hired by two farmers to attend to their housework – when comedy turns to romance and a bad case of mistaken identity.

The cast is made up of experienced singers who have performed regularly at Melbourne Opera and Victorian Opera, as well as newcomers. Paul Biencourt and Michael Lampard who play the brothers Lionel and Plunkett who hire Lady Harriett (Katy Turbitt) and Nancy (Maria Woolford) without knowing their true identities.

THE crazy bunch of amateur actors from Boort, Buckrabanyule and Community Productions kick off their five-night season of The Traveller’s Table this weekend.

“And we are delighted to also have acclaimed indigenous artist Kevin Williams whose work will be on display for the duration of the show,” Mr Wood said.

COMMUNITIES across the Loddon are wanting better mobile phone and internet service.

After dropouts during the summer storm floods, they have called for 21st century telecommunications to be made an essential service.

In Newbridge, residents are walking in circles to find mobile phone reception. And even when the service comes up to three bars, businessman Matt Mizzi said it immediately drops when dialling a number.

“It’s so patchy the phone might ring but you cannot answer it,” Matt said outside the hotel he owns with wife Michele.

Just a few hundred metres away, Sarah Davies has had to have a roster for her school-aged children to complete homework requiring use of the internet.

“We can’t get NBN, we are in a blackspot. The telcos just tell us to buy more equipment to improve internet service so for the kids it’s one at a time,” she said.

Matt and Sarah said the lack of connectivity posed a risk to the safety of residents.

But they also said business and tourism was taking a hit.

“There are all these digital tools for tourists to use but they are useless without service around here,” said Matt who who says

“The recreation reserve committee closed the camping area before one summer storm to keep people (away and) safe.

people who live in Newbridge, a figure they say the telcos have used to avoid boosting service capacity.

“But over the Christmas-New Year week alone the population around here - Newbridge, Tarnagulla, Laanecoorie - was more than 700 people,” they said.

Sarah says: “The service is woeful. And we built a new home and it came with an NBN box in the garage but we can’t use it either.”

MICK Ward stood beside the flooding Calder Highway on Christmas Day hoping for mobile service but knowing his chances were not that good.

The mid-way point between Inglewood and Wedderburn was again in a swathe along the highway disconnected from telecommunications as waters rose after the 175mm-plus drenching.

“We’re between two towers they say and this happens all the time,” Mick said.

“It’s discrimination against people living in the rural areas.

Better phone reception? Bring it on.”

Service along the highway connecting the state’s north and south went down for more than five hours for some telecommunications providers during the December 25 deluge.

There are similar experiences for communities around the Loddon Valley Highway between Bendigo and Kerang and the Pyramid Hill-Bendigo Road. Loddon Shire’s Terrick Ward councillor Dan Straub said: “I can be driving from Pyramid Hill to Myers Flat and have no coverage at all. The network seems to be searching for 5G and it’s just not available in our area.”

Cr Straub said coverage was at best marginal in areas around

the East Loddon P12 College and Calivil. “And Serpentine has had significant problems since 2022.

Many times in a storm the power supply is knocked out, the battery back-up is exhausted.

“And if the roads are blocked, telecommunications providers can’t get a back-up generator to a tower in time,” he said.

“The network - phone and internet - becomes completely unusable.”

Cr Straub said it was time to take rural communities off the telecommunications backburner.

“Regardless of unforeseen weather, we have very poor connectivity that is inhibiting residents and the day-to-day running of businesses,” he said.

“And when the Government is pushing people to use the VicTraffic and VicEmergency sites for information on disasters and emergencies, that’s of no use when people can’t even get a connection.

“Fill the gaps ... we’re only 40 minutes from Bendigo.”

Cr Straub said the risk to safety was high in storms and flood across his council ward.

“In some towns, service is okay but the moment you go hardly any distance out and there are problems with service for mobiles,” he said

NBN expanding wireless footprint THE reach of wireless broadband at Inglewood and Serpentine will be extended, NBNCo said last week.

The broadband company said upgrade work had started on local towers as part of its $750 million investment in the NBN fixed wireless and NBN sky muster satellite networks.

“After the tower works are completed, we expect that faster download speeds during the busy period will become available across the NBN fixed wireless network.”

The NBN tower coverage area is expected to expand from 14km to 28km from a base tower.

BUYERS lined-up at Bendigo on Mondayanticipating an easier day price-wise but couldn’t hold the market.

Both the lamb and sheep sales opened softer but quickly gained momentum. The price point for good processing lambs late in the auction was at much higher levels than where the sale began.

There was just 12,260 lambs yarded, down nearly 6700 head on a week ago.

Quality was more varied with less consistent lines of well finished lambs available.

A major domestic order was absent and while the other regular buyers attended some didn’t operate fully, especially once price rates lifted.

The sweet spot of the sale was good 2630kg cwt crossbred lambs which gained $10 to $20/head. Any good trade lambs, which were limited, averaged $6 dearer.

Some of the neat MK style light lambs were considerably dearer in places.

But there was also lambs that showed a weaker trend than last week and they were usually on the plainer side for breeding quality and fat cover.

The heaviest export lambs over 30kg cwt sold from $212 to a top of $255 and cost averages were still around 700c to 725kg cwt.

Well finished 26-30kg cwt lambs were the market highlight, the best crossbred lines selling from $190 to $226, boosted to cost averages above 740c after some pens hit 800c/kg cwt late in the auction.

Neat trades were scarce and sold from $158 to $164 for the best 22-24kg cwt pens.

Once off the lead pens the general run of mixed lambs under 24kg cwt had varied results around quality, fat cover and number in a pen. Broadly a lot of lambs were in the 650c to 750c range.

A restocking order paid $139 for store lambs with a tradeweight frame. Some of the neater lines of MK lambs were considerably dearer at up to $130/head. Smaller and plainer lambs $59 to $110.

The sheep sale started off flat at $90 for big crossbred ewes but by the end of the run buyers had paid up to $110.

Heavy Merino ewes in wool sold to a top of $125. Some categories of heavy mutton were dearer, while there was a consistent stronger trend over light and trade sheep.

Most sheep $60 to $100 at averages of 280c to 330c/kg cwt.

There was a surprising amount of hog-

gets in this sale, with the lead pens of crossbreds with shape and weight much dearer at up to $183/head.

Big Ben! Swish Swiss stars TANDARRA cattle breeder Ben Govett has collected a swag of major prizes at the International Dairy Week show in Tatura last week.

But Ben’s team of 17 cattle, including his star brown Swiss animals, had a less-than-perfect preparation for the major national competition.

Days before being taken to the show, Ben’s Tandarra property was in flood.

“Normally that close to the event, I would be focusing on the cows and getting ready,” Ben said, “This year water started going into the channel and there was a risk around the property by the Tuesday.

“Luckily by the Wednesday morning everything had peaked and we headed to Tatura.”

Once at the show, Ben did an almost cleansweep in the national brown Swiss show - junior premier breeder, junior premier exhibitor, premier breeder and premier exhibitor.

He also picked up the intermediate champion banner for Tandara, claiming the championship with Tandara Dairystar Lola 99, reserve champion and was placed first in the junior three in milk born in 2020 and junior two in-milk born 2021, summer yearling dry born 2022,

Dial Us In: Time for phone investment GOVERNMENTS are putting the lives of Loddon residents and visitors at risk by not ensuring there is adequate and reliable mobile phone reception.

Two major highways running through the Loddon Shire - the Calder and the Loddon Valley - are prone to connectivity dropouts and the Loddon River is flanked by even more dismal reception. The lives or visitors and transient motorists are being dealt the same fate as locals.

This week the Loddon Herald launches a campaign calling on government - federal and state and the telcos to take our local communities out of telecommunications blackspots without delay.

Christmas Day floods across the region saw some services down for more than five hours as the first of the summer storm emergencies was growing with a rapid crescendo.

Apologies for inconvenience that come from telcos after every dropout - they happen with regularity around Serpentine when storms brew - are all very well and good. But the problem persists, nothing changes and our local communities are left to live with an inferior connection for mobile phones or the internet.

And while telecommunication companies are just that, private businesses answerable to owners and shareholders, the government has a more than crucial leadership role to play in seeing decent services are delivered across the Loddon.

EDITORIAL Universal service obligation arrangements were originally put in place before the widespread use of mobile and broadband services, as the Department of Infrastructure admits. It says Telstra is responsible for delivering the USO, and must provide standard telephone services on request to every premises in Australia within reasonable timeframes. This is both a legislative and contractual obligation.

But when the universal guarantee was updated in 2018, it did not include mobile phones. “Mobile services are provided commercially and are not included in the USG because of the difficulty of providing mobile service ‘universally’, that is, everywhere in Australia, no matter how remote, sparsely populated or untravelled.”

Perhaps the money raked in from unused highdata sold with mobile phone plans could be used to fund better connections on the periphery of a big city. Communities along the Loddon River, in towns along highways are not exactly remote - half an hour from Victoria’s largest inland city in many cases - and are certainly well travelled.

The Royal Commission into The Black Saturday bushfires found transmission lines were responsible for igniting six of those blazes. The East Kilmore Blaze alone, 119 lives were lost, 1242 homes were destroyed. $500 million dollars was paid out in Australia’s largest class action lawsuit as result.

That comment alone is a pure example of TCV’s behaviour.

Advising they will simply ‘turn the transmission lines off’ to allow us volunteers to fight fires.

What about the CFA and furthermore our Chief Officer Jason Heffernan being quoted that you can fight fires around transmission lines providing the incident controller advises it’s safe or the flames are less than two metres high.

Being a standard CFA volunteer, if you are first on scene, then you are the incident controller until further notice… that’s a big call for a volunteer!

I (CFA volunteer) am yet to receive any ‘training’ regarding control measures of fighting fires near transmission lines.

The only advise I have received (call it training if you will?) is (this can also be seen on the CFA’s web page) that you must remain at least 25 metres from the transmission line easements.

Vicar on the grange

TUCKED away on farmland near Glenalbyn is a cairn few know exists.

It was dedicated more than 70 years ago to celebrate the centenary of William Hall settling at Glenalbyn Grange. His descendants built a freestone memorial cairn with a granite plaque in 1953.

Found by travelling to Kingower turning into Kingower-Kurting road, turning into Gillespie’s road which will take you to a T intersection with Hall’s road at the gates of the Glenalbyn vineyard, the cairn is about 40 metres to your left on private property.

Unfortunately lettering on the plaque has become badly weathered and hard to read. It basically states “erected 1953, William Hall, Elizabeth Hall, churches at Kingower, Moliagul, Wedderburn, Burkes Flat, Rheola and Bealiba”.

William Hall was born in 1811 at Lazonby, Cumbria, England, the son of Thomas Hall, 1773-1850, yeoman farmer, and his wife Mary, nee Hesket, 1775-1845.

Hall was educated at St. Bee’s Grammar School and Clare College, Cambridge University where he gained a Bachelor of Arts in 1835 followed by a Masters in 1838. In the meantime Hall was ordained a deacon by the Bishop of Ely, on November 27, 1836 and then a priest, in 1840, by the Bishop of Chester.

Hall was the curate of St Mary’s, Manchester from 1840 to 1843 and St George’s, Stalybridge for the next three years.

Hall was also mathematical master at Manchester, a senior fellow and dean, a member of the University Senate and one of the examining fellows in mathematics at the University of Cambridge prior to marrying Elizabeth Clare Lambert, daughter of John Beevor Lambert, merchant, and his wife Mary Ann, nee Wallis, in 1848, at North Ferriby, Yorkshire.

William and Elizabeth emigrated from London to Australia on the Royal George, arriving in Melbourne on June 1, 1848.

Hall assisted with the services at St James’ and St Peter’s, Melbourne Church of England before being posted to Ballan the following year so he could visit 12 stations but Hall resigned after a quarrel with Bishop Charles Perry.

Owing to a difference of opinion on the working of his circuit he quit his licence in 1853 he having obtained the Glenalbyn run and moved to Brenanah, near Glenalbyn Grange where he built a timber Church of England chapel and schoolhouse

Churches and gold William Hall was also involved in the churches at Kingower, Wedderburn, St Arnaud, Jericho now Wehla, Moliagul, Berlin now Rheola, Cochrane’s Creek now Bealiba, Burke’s Flat and on several other rushes where gold had been found.

A memorial was presented to Chief Secretary requesting that miners be allowed to rush the pre-emptive right of the Rev. William Hall on October 17, 1860.

The following January the Inglewood Advertiser reported that 229 ounces, 40 ounces and 212 ounces of gold had been crushed from the tailing on Hall’s paddock.

It would appear that Hall refused to allow mining on his pre-emptive right however the area was rushed in early 1864, Samuel Morzier and Gabriel Lablauche having registered a claim on which they sunk a shaft through rough sandstone and

pipe clay to a depth of 46 feet deep, finding wash dirt on a layer of decomposed granite along with two nuggets of three and four ounces. It was not long before between 600 and 700 miners had marked out claims.

Hall undertook duties in the Northcote area of Melbourne during 1866 so that his daughters could gain a better education however he eventually returned to Glenalbyn.

The Age reported on February 14, 1868, that a fire broke out in the stackyard belonging to the Rev. W. Hall, of Glenalbyn, near Inglewood, on Tuesday last about noon, by which three stacks of wheat, barley, and oats, valued at about £700 or £800, have been totally destroyed, besides the stable which stood about 60 feet from the yard. “Threshing had only been commenced the previous day, and about 300 bushels had been thrashed and bagged, the chaff from which lay all about the yard. It was from this chaff that smoke was first seen to arise, and in an instant one sheet of flame enveloped the stacks rendering hopeless any attempt to extinguish the conflagration.

“The thrashed corn which had been left out, as the weather was so fine, was consumed at the same time. The stacks were still smouldering on Wednesday at noon.

The origin of the fire is not known, but it is thought a match might have been accidentally dropped in the chaff on Saturday, the fire being spontaneous owing to the heat of the sun. The stackyard lies to the west of Mr Hall’s dwelling-house, and most fortunately there was an easterly wind blowing at the time, or there is little doubt the whole homestead would have shared the same fate as the stacks.

We believe the property destroyed was not insured, and the deepest sympathy is felt for Hall, who is universally respected throughout this district.”

Elizabeth Hall died during 1883 aged

69 while William Hall died at Glenalbyn Grange on 15 May 1887, he being buried two days later at the Kingower cemetery.

The will of William Hall stated that his son Beevor was to get the land at Jarklin whilst daughter Arabella was to get the land at Glenalbyn.

The children of William and Elizabeth Hall were - Mary 1849–1933, married John Thomas Walsh; Elizabeth Clare 18501906, married David Ellis in 1878; Eleanor 1852-53; Beevor Lambert Hall 18541922, married Jane Isabella Gillespie; and Arabella Hall 1856-1926, married Peter Gillespie 1880. The latter two are buried at Kingower.

Margaret Hall, 1801-63, a sister to William Hall, married Joseph Thompson, 1793-1852, in Cumberland in 1823 and had seven children including Joseph Thompson, junior, who was on the Sandy Creek, now Tarnagulla, goldfield where he married Hannah Sarah Blake during 1868 and to them were born Margaret in 1869, died aged fourteen days and Margaret in 1872.

The Commons The Inglewood Goldfield common, some 50,096 acres or seventy eight square

miles in area, was declared on 28 January 1861, it being one of the largest commons in Victoria all surrounding the township of Inglewood on all sides. The rectangular-shaped common extended 21km west from the Loddon River and then south for 9km lying within the Korong Division of the Maryborough Mining District. The population consisted of 2000 miners and residents who were entitled to use the common.

The Kingower Goldfield common of 5800 acres, was declared at the same time it abutting the southern boundary of the Inglewood common.

The Reverend William Hall’s Glenalbyn pre-emptive right paddock, which had been rushed by diggers in June 1860, was sandwiched between the two commons however Hall lost a lot of his land to the commons.

Another squatter, John Catto, who had held the Loddon run since 1839, was also affected.

It is thought that Inglewood was named at the suggestion of Elizabeth Hall who came from Inglewood Forest, Cumberland, England.

December sports star named YOUNG Serpentine cricket Allira James has been named the Loddon Herald Sports Star of the Year monthly winner for December.

Allira was named in the top bowlers and bats at last month’s Victoria Country Cup tournament in Albury.

A right-arm fast bowler, Allira finished with 3/15 in the tournament’s second game playing for the Northern Rivers representative side.

Allira joins Inglewood woodchopper John Coffey junior and Pyramid Hill mo-

torcross champion Judd Chislett as the first three monthly winners in the new award recognising sporting achievements of Loddon residents.

Monthly winners are in the running for the annual Sports Star of the Year award to be named at a dinner in October. One of the Loddon’s greatest sporting exports, champion rally co-driver Rhianon Gelsomino is the award’s official ambassador.

Bulldogs unveil netball coaches PYRAMID Hill has locked in its coaching panel for the 2024 Loddon Valley netball season.

The Bulldogs, big improvers in A Grade last season, will be coached by club stalwart Chelsea Emmerson.

In her third season with the club, Simone Edgley has been named leader of the B Grade team while Sarah Luke will have charge of C Reserve.

The Bulldogs’ announcement this week follows Inglewood appointing its 2023 best and fairest Abby Hayes

as A Grade coach after club legends Helen Ward and Dianne Wayman, who guided the Blues’ return to A Grade, did not seek re-appointment.

Dianne will join with Sharna Lewis to coach the 17 and under, 15 and under and 13 and under sides.

Gen Lyons has been named the C Grade coach.

Meanwhile, the Blues have again given life member Leigh Lamprell the coaching reins of its under 18 football side.

Ross rolls out a top pitch

By CHRIS EARL THE turf pitch at Wedderburn’s Market Square has never looked better - that’s the word out of the local cricket club after knocking off Upper Loddon association powerhouse Kingower on Saturday.

The praise from players started in advance of Saturday’s match when they “pitched” the story of one bloke in particular devoting hours to the turf wicket and extending the field coverage.

Ross Hannah retired back to Wedderburn two years ago - his family has been in the district since the 1870s - and soon had the club knocking on his door.

He renown as a turf wicket curator had been established in the 1980s on the famous Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

Ross had played his junior cricket with Wedderburn before heading south for the final years of secondary school, hooking up with the Bendigo club until heading to Melbourne where he worked with Border Force for 20 years.

“I didn’t play a lot of cricket in Bendigo because of back injury so I started rolling the wicket ... and swinging the bat in the C Grade side,” he said.

“We had a choice of wickets to roll out each week.”

He learnt the skill of rolling wickets from Terry Hunter and is now on the job at Market Square.

Ross says it’s a partnership with club legend Bob Steel who, as usual, gives credit to others.

“I am always aiming for the pace of the ball off the wicket to

Ross says there’s a good 20 hours preparing the wicket every week. “Preparation this week was interrupted by the rain and I couldn’t roll out the turf until Thursday.

“Luckily, I made a start the previous week,” he said.

“If you are going to play cricket, play turf, do it properly and put in the hours.”

He’s firmly in the turf wicket camp - Wedderburn has the association’s only turf wicket. “The synthetic pitches can be a little bland.”

“Here on the turf wicket you can get some good sharp bounce.”

Ross and Bob have also spent many hours before this season spraying the field.

“We’re gradually moving out with good cover in the infield,” he said. “The floods (over Christ-

mas) have also helped green it up.

We’ll keep extending the cover and then when players dive in the outfield, that won’t need skin repairs.”

And Ross said he had no hesitation answering that knock on the door two years ago.

“Most of these guys playing today, I went to school with their dads!”

Mangan snags singles’ title GLENN Mangan has won the Bridgewater Bowling Club singles championship.

Mangan secured the win over Brian Oughtred in the playoff last Friday afternoon.

The ladies will start their playoff rounds this week.

Division 5 played away on Saturday against second placed Strathfieldsaye on very slick greens.

All rinks struggled to find their lengths during the day against a very strong opposition with all rinks going down on the day.

John Fagan’s rink was the best performing on the day, losing by only a few shots.

Division 7 travelled to Bendigo East and came away with a fiveshot win overall.

Don Wilson’s rink was the leading rink on the day winning by 19 shots. This was a morale boosting win for the Division 7 side who have struggled throughout the season.

INGLEWOOD The Monday pennant Division 5 team came back from all the Christmas Lunches full of vigour and had a big win last week against a hapless Bendigo team who unfortunately were struggling to get a team together for this round.

This win made their third spot a bit more secure. Best performed rink were were Edna Patterson, Phyliss McEwan, Patsy Lyndon and David Whitehead with a 33-shot win.

The thud last week at South Bendigo wasn’t an earthquake.

It was the Inglewood Division 1 team crashing back to earth courtesy of a thumping by South Bendigo in a lacklustre perfor-

mance. Final scores were Inglewood 48 shots (0 points) defeated by South Bendigo East 71 shots (14 points).

In weekend pennant, the Regional Charity Round with all clubs asked to support a Cancer Organisation and to wear clothing in the cancer colours was played.

Most clubs supported the regional request and it made for a fun round as well as raising much needed funds for the cancer groups.

A wonderful initiative by the region which will help promote bowls in the area as well as providing much needed support to those suffering from cancer.

It was not Inglewood Premier League side’s best performance losing to Bendigo East by 44 shots at South Bendigo.

They get another chance this week at home against Golden Square in game that is not beyond them to win.

Best performed rink Merilyn Chamberlain, Tim Birthisel, Denis Wilson and Ian Chamberlain with a two-shot loss.

In Division 6, try as they might Inglewood couldn’t quite get over the top of Eaglehawk at home.

They held a slender lead at the half time break, only to be overtaken in the second half to eventually go down by nine shots.

Best rink this week were Simon Laird, Bill Concol, Bev Taig and Helen Leach who overcame a shocker of a start (11 shots to one shot down) to win by three shots.

Final scores were Inglewood 58 shots (2 points) defeated by Eaglehawk 67 shots (14 points).

Steve stuns top order A SUPER spell with the ball from Wedderburn veteran Steve Giorlando left Kingower reeling on Saturday.

Giorlando was brought into the turf attack when the association’s dominant team this season was sitting on 43 without the loss of wickets.

He turned the game on its head with the quick wickets of openers Matt Rowe and Ben Rose, followed soon after with the scalp of top run scorer Kyle Simpson.

Giorlando’s 3/13 was the turning point. At one stage his figures were five overs, two maidens, three wickets for five.

Adam Postle played his part, finishing with one wicket and two great catches in the field.

Kingower staggered in the tail after Finn Turnbull dismissed Tyler Murphy for 21 and Kingower fell 31 runs short of the 149 set by Wedderburn.

The Band made a flying start on a good wicket when opener Will Holt knocked up 18 runs off just 11 balls. He found the boundary twice and belted a six before giving a Kyle Simpson delivery a top edge and caught at short square by Matt Rowe.

The loss of Brad Holt (a boundary his only score in six deliv-

eries faced), Owen Lockhart (a duck) and Cam Steel (who had already survived two near-dismissals) in quick succession had Wedderburn in trouble at 5/47.

Luke Holt and Turnbull revived the fortunes, Turnbull with a plucky 27 before sending a Ben Rose delivery into the hands of Blake Pickles.

Holt stayed at the crease to hit 47 and help take Wedderburn to 132.

Rose was the best of Kingower’s bowlers with three wickets while the potency of its attack was also shown by deJong and Pickles.

Lock, Murphy big hitters on season resumption

SATURDAY saw the resumption of Upper Loddon junior cricket with the start of round eight’s two day fixture.

With all the rain over the break, both the Boort and Wedderburn grounds were extremely well grassed and runs were hard to come by.

Bridgewater travelled to Boort and decided to bat after winning the toss.

Bridgewater’s innings was dominated by Flynn Lock and that other player known as ‘extras”, who between them contributed 80 of Bridgewater’s final total of 7/100.

Lock scored 43 before being the sixth batsman dismissed and shared in the best two partnerships of the innings.

Together with Connor Alexander, 25 were added for the first wicket while for the second wicket partnership of 35, Lock was aided by Blake Smyth.

Darby Perryman with two wickets took bowling honours for Boort Yando, while Harry Malone, Luke Boyd and Max Beattie who had his first bowl at this standard, all gave little away and finished with frugal figures.

Kingower batted first in their match on the turf at Wedderburn.

Shelby Giorlando also picked up a wicket after starting the game with the keeper gloves.

Murphy went on to retire with

50 to his name, while McCoy made 27. Morgan Lonza was the best of the remaining batsmen, scoring 23 before retiring.

At stumps, Kingower had reached a total of 6/156.

The Wedderburn bowling was

somewhat restricted with just the seven players, however five were able to take a wicket each.

Trai Clarke was able to put together a ten over spell while Lannon Sellick bowled a fairly tight six overs.

CUP A PRIORITY Club trots out new sponsor

A NEW name will be etched on the Wedderburn Trotters’ Cup for the first time in more than 20 years on Sunday.

Priority One was last week named the cup’s new sponsor with harness racing club president Bruce Hargreaves saying the real estate company with a Loddon office was a good fit for the premier trotting race.

“For 21 years through to our last cup meeting in 2022, we were fortunate to have Richmond and Associates,” Hargreaves said.

“With that firm’s change of ownership, we were delighted when Priority One stepped up.”

Local representative Julie Bernaim said: “Community is so important to the area and particularly so when it comes to sport, We are delighted to have an association with Wedderburn Harness Racing Club and support the community.”

Sunday’s cup meeting that also features the Loddon Shire Pacers’ Cup will be raced at Carisbrook.

Hargreaves expects racing will return to Wedderburn in 2025 after beautification works part of the Donaldson Park upgrade have been finished and the track damaged in the summer storms is repaired.

The club is running special buses between Wedderburn and Carisbrook for Sunday’s premier meeting on its calendar. Fashions on the field will be a feature of the day with sections for tiny tots (4 and under) young junior (8 and under), junior (12 and under), teenagers, adults and over 50s.

Eagle blueprint lands with commission AFL Central Victoria has confirmed plans for a Maiden Gully under 18 side in the Bendigo Football League this season have landed on its desk.

However, AFL Central Victoria on Tuesday said it could not comment on details of the submission or processes commission-

ers would follow. Maiden Junior Football Club is making a fresh bid to re-establish its under 18 presence after the senior Maiden Gully YCW Club was knocked back last year.

Loddon Valley Football League’s appealed the Eagles’ bid and had the backing of commissioners.

The league says the welcome mat remains out for Maiden Gully returning to its under 18 ranks.

Maiden Gully has stood out of under 18 football for two seasons while originally pushing for a move into the Heathcote League.
