HARVEST HEAT

Crop and sheep lost as fire A PART-HARVESTED canola crop and sheep were speads over 250 hectares lost in a fire at Murphys By CHRIS EARL

Creek on Tuesday.

More than 250 hectares of crop and grazing land were destroyed before more than 100 firefighters contained the fire about 5.30pm. CFA units were called in from across the Loddon and adjoining districts to quell flames. They were assisted by Forest Fire Manegement Victoria firefighters. Firefighting planes first called to the fire that started in a pad-

dock on the Wimmera Highway before diverted to other fires in the state. A chopper made at least three dumps of water on the fireground. Loddon police and highway patrol officers blocked roads while fire units and local farmers with slip-on tanks and pumps tackled flames. Several farm buildings were

under threat at the height of the fire and an emergency warning was issued as winds fanned flames in a north-easterly direction. Agriculture Victoria staff were called to the scene late Tuesday afternoon to assess sheep killed or injured. The number lost in the fire is still to be determined. Some stock was euthanased on

Tuesday with Agriculture Victoria back at the property yesterday morning to assess another 120 sheep. “Following an emergency, we support farmers who have experienced agricultural impacts such as loss of stock and farming assets,” a spokesperson said. Local fire crews and a fiveunit strike force from Bendigo worked late into Tuesday night mopping up. The fire is believed to have started from a harvester working on the canola crop. Firefighting equipment was beside the parked harvester as crews extinguished the fire.

CFA region commander Bryan Suckling said: “It is appears the farmer was doing everything right but things went bad.” Mr Suckling said flames moved quickly across farmland despite benign conditions. “This is a sign that we face a dangerous season ... fuel is in such a dry state that it is ready to burn,” he said. “The fire acts as a pressing reminder to prepare for the summer ... and prepare now.” It was the second fire in Murphys Creek on Tuesday. The first burnt about a hectare near Oxleys Lane about 9.30am after roadside slashing.
