TERRICK West Merino Stud has claimed a major national title at the weekend’s Australian Sheep and Wool Show.

The McGauchies, of Prairie West, have brought home the ribbon for the nation’s best March-shorn pair for a brother and sister by the same ram. “This has been our most successful ever Australian Sheep and Wool Show,” said Ross McGauchie of the local stud’s string of successes in Bendigo against studs from across Australia. Terrick West was also

awarded the champion and reserve champion in the Marchshorn fine poll ram events, champion in the fine-medium poll ewe and reserve champion poll ram. The major awards were topped off with a string of ribbons awarded in class events and being named most successful exhibitor of fine-medium wool merinos. “There were a couple of oth-

er classes where judges had us ahead until the final minutes, swapping the finishing order,” Mr McGauchie said. And in the national ram sales on Sunday, Terrick West was among the top breeders with “a deep bodied ram with a strong head wide body with a nice medium wool” selling for $16,000. The stud averaged $9250 for its four rams in the auction conducted at Bendigo’s Prince

of Wales Showgrounds and online. Mr Gauchie said: “The quality at this show is exceptional and as breeders it’s the opportunity to show what we are doing.” Mr McGauchie and daughter Claire prepared the stud’s show team of 12 sheep and were helped in the show ring by other family members. “For some, it was their first show.” The weekend’s successes for Terrick West, entering its 90th year as a stud, follow last year top national prices at ram sales

SCHOOL students across the Loddon are expected to again wear masks in the classroom with the release of new State Government recommendations to curb the spread of COVID. Local schools on Tuesday were told the Health Department “strongly recommends that face masks are worn in all indoor settings”. The recommendation is for all students aged eight and over to wear masks until the end of winter although the State Government says it is not a mandate. The mask push came as the State Emergency Service dropped the requirement for all volunteers to have had three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Wedderburn SES unit has been operating at reduced capacity after some double-vaxed members refused to have a third dose and were stood done from active duties. The State Government issued new pandemic orders last week and an SES spokesperson said: “After careful consideration, VICSES will be exercising the exceptional circumstances exemption in the short term, under the new pandemic orders relating to undertaking critical training and emergency response. “This exemption will allow some members to respond to emergencies or undertake critical training if they have received two doses, but are still to get their third (booster) dose. “VICSES will continue to support our members in complying with the pandemic orders and provide evidence of three-dose vaccinations, as required by the Department of Health. At VICSES, one of our agreed values is that safety drives our decisions. Accordingly, it’s important that we follow the public health advice to keep our members, and the community, safe.”
