TOWN RALLIES THE TROOPS TO KEEP TRADITION ALIVE
SERVICE STAYS
AN ELEVENTH hour call to community has saved Korong Vale’s ANZAC Day service.
Amber Gibson said her community had quickly organised Monday’s commemoration after the RSL’s Wedderburn-Korong Vale sub-branch last week confirmed it would not organise the 9.30am service for the first time. Amber said the community had been initially devastated by the RSL’s decision.
“I’ve been attending with my family for 30 years and for other families in the district, they have been part of ANZAC services in the Vale for generations,” she said. Sub-branch president Roger

Paterson blamed a shortage of resources and volunteers on the decision to step away from organising the Korong Vale service in the park that honours local Victoria Cross hero Albert Borella. “We don’t have the personnel to run three services - Dawn at Wedderburn, Korong Vale and Wedderburn in the morning,” he said. Mr Paterson said that six weeks ago, Korong Vale had been offered the Dawn Service instead.
But Amber said Borella Park was without lighting, making it unsuitable for a dawn service. Within days of the sub-branch announcement, Amber said there had been a massive community response to keep the ANZAC tradition alive in Korong Vale. “We were initially gutted. It’s a special day for us ... my greatgrandfather was in World War One and War World Two, my grandmother was secretary of a Legacy group ... and for our fam-
ily it is something we have always done,” she said. Amber said district RSL member Trevor Collins had been among the first to step up and assist with organising the service. “Our service always has at least 30 people and now the community will organise a tribute on ANZAC Day,” she said. Wedderburn and Korong Vale RSL sub-branches merged in the late 1980s.
