SUPPLY CRISIS By CHRIS EARL
SNAP shutdowns and freight delivery delays are hitting Loddon communities and businesses. Staff at multiple Loddon business have been forced into isolation in the past fortnight as local COVID cases jump. There have been more than 110 COVID cases in the shire in two years - more than half recorded in the last three weeks. Coupled with existing staff shortages, some businesses have had to reduce opening hours

and services. Several have been temporarily closed and the case spike also impacted local sport at the weekend as Victoria’s daily case numbers stay in five figures. Wedderburn’s 24 Karat Cafe last week was told its milk deliveries would be reduced to once a week with freight companies struggling for staff and supplies. Inglewood IGA’s Peter Moore said: “The whole supply chain is
in turmoil. The supply timeline is between 48 and 72 hours behind where it would normally be and one in five products are simply not available.” “Deliveries we would receive on a Wednesday are not coming until Friday or Saturday,” he said. Mr Moore said some suppliers were limiting product range and praised customers for their understanding. “Customers have been really
good and our staff have had a real learning curve over the past 12 months in letting customers know what is happening.” Yarrawalla’s Kai-Ora Piggery production manager Jarad Smith said supplies were continuing to be delivered to processors in Melbourne as the industry battled transport challenges. “We’re crossing fingers that the rules will adapt to keep every -thing running and the supply chain running,” he said. “We’ve been fortunate to date.” The double-whammy of COVID and staff shortages saw several Loddon hotels close early on New Year’s Eve.
Victoria Hotel Pyramid Hill licensee and Boort Railway Hotel manager Paul Carter said he had advertised extensively across regional Victoria late last year for hospitality staff and received no applications. Loddon’s five swimming pools continue to be hit with a shortage of lifeguards. Mitiamo opened at the weekend for the first time in weeks while the gates at other pools have remained shut on some scheduled opening days.

Let’s celebrate ... with flags and flowers SCORES of paper wattles and waratahs are taking shape for the return of Pyramid Hill’s Australia Day celebrations next Wednesday. Daily workshops are being held at the town’s neighbourhood house where Harry Cain, Charlotte Pickles and Fletcher Cain were making the colourful decorations last week. The creative trio are pictured being cheered on by Kim Bennett, Rachel Cain and Tammy Peter ahead of the local Lions club’s community gathering. Club president Tania Quinn said the club was excited to be bringing locals together on Australia’s national day after the event was cancelled last year. Tania said a government grant for the community celebration meant COVID compliance could be managed and music, activities and meals provided.
