A mining licence application and permit process are expected to start next year for the Four Eagles project at Mitiamo.

Predictions of a step towards full-scale mining by Catalyst Metals come a decade after exploration started in the area.

Catalyst last week told the ASX of visible gold in samples taken from Four Eagles.

The State Government process in assessing a mining licence application could take a further three years.

“But within five years, I believe we will have started construction of the mine,” Catalyst’s geology manager Paul Quigley said.

SPECIAL REPORT Mitiamo is the most advanced of three Loddon exploration areas for the Western Australian-based Catalyst and partner Hancock Prospecting.

The Tandarra Gold Project at Dingee and 730 square kilometres of land at Boort are part of the partnership’s exploration of 2100 square kilometres running north-south from Bendigo.

They have just launched their busiest and most intensive exploratory drilling season yet at Mitiamo with three crews now collecting deep drill hole samples for analysis.

Catalyst’s preparation to lodge a mining licence application with the Government comes as MG Gold readies for

a new exploration program around Inglewood.

And last month, Bendigobased Shannon Earthmoving and Mining and associates began the process for prospecting licences over more than 14 hectares in the Rheola district, The last major mining was at Tarnagulla on the Poverty Reef. The Nick O’Time shoot was mined by Reef Mining NL until the mine shut in 2000 when the gold price dropped.

Mr Quigley says Catalyst brought skill to the project with partner Hancock contributing additional vision and capital.

ND finally, who dreams about going to the moon? Bored of being stuck indoors during COVID, Gloucester’s Geoff Sweat decided to perform a feat never before attempted - to swim the distance to the Moon in his bathtub.

Sweat, 41, has an Olympic-sized bathtub in his basement, and last April, he swam 250,000 miles. He swam for three hours in the morning, and another six in the afternoon, averaging 10,000 miles a day. Wife Nora was initially annoyed at his antics, but soon realised that her husband would become a national hero.

“Everyone’s been talking about it. I’ve never felt proud of him before.”

Virtual links with residents SENIOR year students at Inglewood Primary School have kept up tradition visiting hostel residents at the local health service.

Teacher Rebecca Luckmann said not even COVID had stopped the visits of Grade 5-6 students.

“We have had our second session and both the students and hostel are loving being connected again,” she said.

Testamentary trusts can also be used strategically to aid the defence of an inheritance from family law proceedings.

One way to achieve this is to permit income from the trust to be distributed to anyone in the family group, but only permitting capital to be released to descendants. This is sometimes called a “bloodline trust”.

Road funding windfall EXTRA works have been added to Loddon Shire Council’s road program for the year after a Federal Government windfall.

Loddon has received almost $1.8 million in round two of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

Manager assets and infrastructure David Southcombe, told councillors: “Council was successful in obtaining all funding for the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program and only one of the applications for the Bridges

Renewal Program. The unsuccessful application was for the Bailey’s Bridge replacement project which will instead be funded from underspend in council’s Roads to Recovery allocation from the 2019-2020 financial year.”

The windfall will see $1,617,588 spent on the Bridgewater-Raywood road reconstruction and widening project with $258,743 for the WhitesPitt Road upgrade.

“The section of BridgewaterRaywood Road proposed is the

last section of narrow seal remaining and will result in the entire Bridgewater-Raywood Road being two trafficable lanes, completed,” he said.

“The Whites-Pitt Road upgrade project will result in a decrease in the grading and resheet maintenance costs on this section of road which is becoming excessive due to the high number of commercial vehicles using the road associated with local industry.”

Mr Southcombe said $132,380 had been proposed

for five amenity projects.

“These projects are all associated with sealing township gravel access streets in Boort, Newbridge, Inglewood and Wedderburn that have a history of dust complaints,” he said.

“They will improve township amenity by reducing dust for adjoining properties..”

Council’s infrastructure program had originally been set at $8,6 million. The latest windfall and $422,213 for Laanecoorie-Newbridge road reconstruction adds to the program.

Pete steps out on journey to raise awareness TEENAGER Pete Buschmann is taking his campaign raising awareness of mental health to local streets and roads.

The Year 12 Wedderburn College student yesterday morning stepped off from 24 Karat cafe walking 30km to arrive at Inglewood’s Empire State Hotel later in the day.

For weeks, Pete has been pounding the streets of Wedderburn in all weather in preparation for the walk. He has averaged more than 5km each day training for the trek down the Calder Highway.

And cheering him on are mother Bec, school friends and residents in the two towns. A target of raising $750 for Beyond Blue had already been surpassed last week as supporters rally behind an event raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and other initiatives.

“I have mental health issues as do a lot of others and I want to help people who face anxiety, depression and homelessness,” said Pete, whose career ambition is to become a social worker.

It’s not the first time Pete has raised awareness of challenges faced by other people. Six years ago, he raised money for the Cancer Council and the Homeless Foundation.

He’s thrilled to have already reached the fundraising goal but the walk is perhaps more important, raising awareness among local communities.

IN BRIEF Waste trial first awaits approval AN Australian-first waste technology will be trialled at Pyramid Hill.

Drew Chislett and Adam Riley’s Advanced Energy Tech is waiting on EPA approvals to open the demonstration facility using specialist plant imported from Canada.

The trial aims to transform waste into resources that can be reused, recycled or remade.

The partners, based at Durham Ox and Myers Flat, have worked with Loddon Shire to locate the first facility at Pyramid Hill and are now speaking with local businesses and organisations.

Adam has met with Pyramid Hill Progress Association and the Pyramid Hill Tourism and Marketing Committee.

“This technology is both scaled and fit-for-purpose.

We are confident this will be a leading example of sustainable waste-to-resource management for small to medium sized rural communities and local industries,” Adam said.

Youth transition A NEW project led by the North Central LLEN will take a collaborative approach to reducing youth unemployment in Loddon Campaspe, including Loddon Shire, over the next three years.

Funded through the Kirkland Lake Gold Community Partnership Program, the Youth Pathways Facilitator project will address problems young people face entering the labour market after leaving school.

New depths as drillers firm up area potential A LINE north from Bendigo may be the key to the region’s first 21st century gold rush.

It’s where exploratory drilling between Dingee and Pyramid Hill has intensified over the last decade.

Catalyst Metals has increased drilling activity within the 2100 square kilometres of its exploration licence which includes the Four Eagles Gold Project near Mitiamo and the Tandarra Gold Project near Dingee, and has plans to start drilling at Boort this year.

Reconnaissance drilling and walking geophysical grids have been part of probing to identify potentially rich below-surface faults on land barely mined in the 19th and 20 centuries.

Catalyst’s Paul Quigley said Four Eagles was the company’s most intensively drilled and most advanced in development, followed by Tandarra.

“In the last four years, our understanding of these deposits has grown immensely,” he said.

At Four Eagles, the Boyd’s Dam deposit, 6km east of Mitiamo, the knowledge of what is

below the surface has grown, Paul says, deep and detailed drilling edging the deposit to possible mining production within five years.

Recent drilling has been to 100-150 metres but will now intensify to 400 metres.

“With intensity of drilling comes a bigger budget. To turn the key and construct a mine is capital intensive and everyone wants to be sure,” he said.

Paul says one of the next steps in preparation for mining will be a groundwater investigation to determine the how Murray Basin sediments will perform when a mine operates.

“Where we are in the Murray Basin and the water in the area will determine the nature of the water risk,” he said.

“We’ve done the physical part of the groundwater study.

Now expert consultants will quantify how these sediments would perform.”

Paul says there would be benefits for production from the proximity of the Four Eagles and Tandarra projects.

“Tandarra is about two or

three years behind Four Eagles in progress.”

Catalyst has done gravity geophysics testing at Boort and this year will spend a month drilling at targeted locations.

Samples will be returned to the company’s Bendigo offices where they will be prepared, along with those from Mitiamo and Dingee, for analysis.

Paul says Catalyst’s presence in the Loddon has seen it strengthen community connection. Catalyst has given funds to sporting groups, for a new ambulance at Dingee Bush Nursing Centre and this month a public defibrillator at Pyramid Hill.

Exploratory boots tipped to hit ground AN exciting return to smallscale mining looms in the Inglewood district, according MG Gold general manager Paul Carrick.

He said the company was also in the process of reinvigorating exploration in the area.

“There’s a lot of interest in central Victoria. We’re looking at re-opening up exploration of existing leases in and around the outskirts of Inglewood,” Mr Carrick said.

“There’s been little exploration in the last 40 years.”

He said Maxwell Gold was putting together exploration programs to better understand target areas.

Some exploratory drilling plans are before the government awaiting approval and

Mr Carrick said he was confident of “having boots on the ground in the second half of the year”.

“Hopefully, we can get back into meaningful operations again,” he said.

“The last serious mining was in the early 1980s and there have been a number of attempts to reinvigorate it to varying degrees.”

Meanwhile, MG Gold is waiting on government approvals to begin rehabilitation of the Columbian Tailings at Inglewood.

The approval process was started last year.

Works will include removal of tailings in sections not part of heritage protection and will take two weeks.

Visible gold in Four Eagles, ASX told CATALYST Metals has told the ASX that diamond drilling at Boyd’s Dam at the Four Eagles Gold Project has intersected further gold mineralisation with visible gold being recorded in four of the nine holes completed.

Last week’s statement said

assays had only been received for four holes, two of which have significant intersections.

And at Boyd North, where previous drilling was limited to the top 100 metres, two diamond drill holes 100 metres apart have intersected a strong structure with quartz

veining, arsenopyrite and visible gold at 347 metres and 338 metres down holes respectively.

Although no assays are yet available, these intersections may represent a stacked repetition of the shallow gold zone.

Local hero medals reminder to history THE final day of the Old Tarnagulla In Colour exhibition had extra significance when descendants of World War One hero Alfred Bool presented a framed tribute to the local archives.

Alfred Bool was born in the town in 1895, his father Frederick a long-time borough councillor who served several terms as mayor.

The bank clerk, the youngest in a family of 12, enlisted in 1916 and served in France.

He completed officer training in Britain and returned to the Western Front where he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in action near Le Catelet, on September 30, 1918.

Alfred led a patrol of five men in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire, and succeeded in locating the enemy position. “By skilful handling of his patrol, he obtained information of the greatest value, which enabled his company to advance more than 1000 yards, and to clear up an

Bus inquiry MURRAY Plains MP Peter Walsh, is encouraging rural Victorians to participate in a Parliamentary public inquiry into the use of school buses by the wider community.

Mr Walsh said the Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee inquiry was focused on whether the use of school buses in rural and regional areas should be expanded to give more members of the community access to travel.

He married and returned to Australia resuming a career in banking that included postings to Clunes, Rupanyup and Shepparton before he died in Melbourne in 1967.

Son Peter was accompanied by family members in presenting a set of replica medals to Tarnagulla hall committee president Barry Condick.

He said the family had also recently restored the graves of Federick and his wife at Tarnagulla cemetery.

Peter said the family maintained its connections to the town and his grandfather had been among the brave men and women of Australia that were part of its history.

Poppies exhibit constant remembrance

POIGNANT paintings will go on display this month in tribute to veterans.

Landscape artist Mal Gilmour mentored students in his art class in capturing on canvas the headstones of returned soldiers buried in Inglewood cemetery.

Mal said connecting every painting in the exhibition was the inclusion of a red poppy.

“Some of the headstones just demanded to be painted,” he said ahead of the class exhibition at the local RSL hall that opens on March 26.

Mal said class members had produced some fine works of art to honour those who had returned.

As a former member of the Royal Australian Navy, the theme for his students’ work has extra meaning.

Several paintings by Mal will also be included in the exhibition. Among them is “From a Vet to a Vet”, the grave of John Cardoza who was born in Inglewood and returned after World War One. He died in 1950.

Mal has been painting since 1967 and held the first of more than 30 exhibitions the following year.

Since retiring to Inglewood, he has continued to paint and teach privately.

Loddon Shire ward councillor Wendy Murphy will officially open the exhibition.

Final farewell A LARGE attendance was expected for the funeral service of John Forbes yesterday afternoon.

The service was to be held at Kangaroo Flat Sports Club, venue of a tribute cricket match a decade ago that raised funds for Inglewood and Bendigo hospitals.

John died, aged 79, earlier this month at Mitiamo.

Lake works LODDON Shire Council will give up to $10,000 from Little Lake Boort Water Reserve funds for beaching works adjacent to the Little Lake Boort Footpath extension.

Barger’s factory in the late 1890s

Agricultural pioneers find their feet across Loddon lands

By KEN ARNOLD TWO of colonial Victoria’s largest plough manufacturers had their beginnings in the Loddon.

They were pioneers who changed the agricultural landscape with inventions, mechanical improvements and ability to grasp new business opportunities.

One was Daniel Harvey who will be featured in a future story.

This week, though, let’s explore the industry of William Gabriel Barger whose influence stretched from one end of the Loddon to the other before making its way to Melbourne.

The Barger story in a way starts with George Jenkins, born 1826, Buckinghamshire, England, who emigrated with his family in 1849.

Son Joseph settled at Bridgewater around 1877 and it was here that he formed a part-

nership with William Gabriel Barger, trading as Jenkins and Barger wheelwrights and ironmongers around 1880.

A branch was established at the fledgling township of Leichardt and was still operating in December 1887.

In the meantime, the partnership was manufacturing ploughs, wire strainers, the Excelsior treeextractor, wagons, carts and other farm machinery.

They exhibited around the various agricultural and pastoral shows - Sandhurst (Bendigo), Pyramid Hill, Kerang, Charlton and Boort, - being awarded a number of prizes including many at the North Western Agricultural Show held at Inglewood.

The Inglewood showcase was originally the Newbridge Agricultural and Horticultural Show, considered by many as the biggest and best show outside the Royal Melbourne Show Newbridge amalgamated with the nearby Bridgewater and Inglewood shows.

Jenkins and Barger applied for a patent for improvements in the construction of scarifiers, No.4967, on March 8, 1887.

As the business had grown considerably, a second branch was established in Boort, described as being

south of and behind Godfrey Street.

Barger, a Justice of the Peace, was a prominent member of the Bridgewater community, a provisional director of Bridgewater Valley Mining Co on October 2, 1883, a minister and the business manager for the partnership.

However the township was rocked on January 8, 1892, when he was arrested on five charges of forgery to which he was jailed for 18 months on two of the charges, to be served concurrently.

In the meantime, a stock in trade auction was held on February 22.

A new factory was built opposite the railway station in Boort in October 1893.

The partnership of Jenkins and Barger was dissolved on

June 20, 1894, at which time Jenkins took control of the Bridgewater branch while Barger was to continue in business at Boort.

It was not long before Barger applied for a patent for improvements in disc harrows, No 11490 lodged in August 1894 and a lift disc or jump harrow or cultivator No. 13264, in August 1896.

These were the first of more than 30 patents, along with the trademark Lightning in 1896.

Barger had relocated his business to 231 Franklin Street, West Melbourne by April 1900.

The business was trading as the Soho Disc Factory by 1905.

As the business grew rapidly it expanded along Franklin Street.

By 1906, Barger had released his combination disc plough

and cultivator, an adjustable three-furrow disc plough and a one-horse hillside reversible plough.

It was not long before the business was trading as Barger and Son. Barger supported Hugh Victor McKay, Sunshine Harvester Works, over non-union labour, his factory was also subjected to picket lines, until the now famous Harvester Decision was handed down.

As Barger was experiencing health problems son Clarence took control of the business and as the Great Depression hit, sold all the patents to H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd in 1930 Barger and Co. was wound up the following year.

Barger mainly concentrated on manufacturing disc ploughs, some being known as Tiger, MalleeKing, Lightning and Dot, a reversible disc plough, a tussock cutting a general purpose cultivator to the design of Harry Cortney Fox The factory also made harrows, hay stack ladders, seedsowers, lucerne cultivators, spanners, wagons, carts, maize cutters and rollers, whilst is also sold Federal winnowers and Federal horseworks, this brand being manufactured by the nearby factory of T. Robinson & Co.

New mapping tool AUSTRALIAN Beef Sustainability Framework has launched an interactive vegetation mapping and reporting tool to provide the best available national data on the balance of tree and grass cover.

The tool helps analyse trends in tree and grass cover on an annual and seasonal basis using over 30 years of satellite imagery.

“The Australian beef industry now has direct access to the same information that regulators and governments have on vegetation management and can use the data to help drive improvements in environmental management,” said chair Tess Herbert.

would assist major local companies to accommodate seasonal staff for harvests and boost permanent staff at the park by three.

Wendy said increased capacity at Boort Lakes would help meet growing seasonal workforce requirements for major growers including Boundary Bend Olives and Orana Olives.

“It’s also going to be a huge boost for Boort itself,” she said..

“Growers are going to need a larger seasonal workforce for longer periods as their production increases,” Wendy said.

“This will bring huge benefits to the Boort and district community. It’s a pretty exciting time.”

Boort Lakes Caravan Park last week received confirmation of a $500,000 State Government grant towards the project that will increase accommodation for seasonal workers by 77.

Agriculture Minister Mary-Ann Thomas made the announcement last

Thursday and later released details of her visit and the grant to local media.

Further north, Nyah Village Caravan Park will receive $109,000 to provide COVIDSafe accommodation for up to 15 additional seasonal workers.

The minister’s media release said: “Suitable accommodation can be a barrier to workers travelling to the regions and joining the seasonal harvest – these projects help to remove that barrier.

“These projects are great examples of ideas driven by locals who have the knowledge to meet the needs of local farmers and employers.”

Member for Norther Victoria Mark Gepp said: “This funding will help farm businesses provide the accommodation, transport and support services that contribute to a safe workplace.”

The grants have been made under the State Government’s $6 million Seasonal Workforce Accommodation Program.

Land strategy ‘guides farming practices’ LODDON Plains Landcare Network is preparing to release its strategy on sustainable agriculture.

The strategy was commissioned from Mal Brown in 2019 and network facilitator Danny Pettingill said its upcoming release would guide a two-year program starting in July.

He said the program in partnership with North Central Catchment Management Authority would work with farms across the Loddon on regenerative practices used on properties.

“The strategy is driven with a community focus, a focus of keeping families on farms,” he said.

Danny said development of regenerative practices and opportunities would benefit farm families and a new generation of rural producers.

He said supporting farm families throughout the program would be important to success.

Among activities that will be part of the two-year program are open days and field days.

Ahead of the strategy release and program launch, the Landcare network has been holding a series of sustainable farming webinars.

The third in the series is today where Ben Boxshall (Australian Agroforestry Foundation, Wood4Good) and Andrew Stewart (Yan Yan Gurt West Farm, Otways Agroforestry Network) are discussing agroforestry.

Next week’s webinar will focus on connecting primary producers with local food networks.

Danny said the series had already engaged more than 60 primary producers across the region.

He said initiatives for 2021 were aimed to strengthen local communities through regenerative and sustainable agriculture.

The network brings together Landcare groups, land managers and community to undertake large scale landscape restoration projects across the Loddon and including Kerang Lakes and Raywood.

RAIN interrupted the Upper Loddon Cricket Association grand final on Saturday and handed the flag to Bridgewater.

Only 30 overs were able to be bowled at Arnold before Bridgewater had their hands on the F.P. Nevins and Co. Premiership Shield due to their higher finishing position on the ladder than opponents Wedderburn Band.

In what was a disappointing end to the season, Bridgewater claiming their first premiership since the 2016-17 season .

The game started on time, albeit under threatening skies at the Arnold Cricket Ground with Bridgewater having first use of the wicket.

Their innings started steadily with openers Josh Hann and Tom McKinley adding 40 for the first wicket before Wedderburn fought their way back into the game taking three wickets on this score.

Shortly after, rain forced the players from the field and although play resumed for a short time, in which Wedderburn gained another breakthrough, rain again stopped play, this time setting in for good.

As in the semi-final, Jordan Hargreaves and Lachlan Peters led the Wedderburn bowling claiming two wickets each, while for Bridgewater, McKinley top scored with 24.

Immediately following the cancellation of play, the F.P. Nevins Shield was presented to Bridgewater’s captain Harry McKinley.

The umpires judged Jordie Hargreaves the best player in the grand final and Braydon Welsh was the recipient of the Bishop player of the year trophy, the Merv Gilmore Memorial Batting Aggregate and the Batting Average.

The Graham Family Bowling Average and the bowling aggregate were won by Lachlan Peters .

Testing water with comp idea BOORT Angling Club says it is considering running fishing competition days for adults and juniors.

President Rod Stringer said options included fortnightly competitions possibly on Sundays.

He said the club was floating the idea for competitions and social activities to gain feedback before making firm plans.

One of the club’s big activities before COVID was the eradication of 173 carp at Little Lake Boort .
