ET’S not be in a hurry. Guess that’s the message we can take for the “penultimate latest” saying adorning the Treemendous sign site between Durham Ox and Boort. That sign, complete with Humphrey B Bear-style waistcoast and a nudge-nudge wink-wink emoji made its appearance last week with the treemendously witty bloke behind the signs saying: “It took a while to get this one up.” Did we say latest sign? Turns out there was a quick change for Valentine’s Day.

OR readers wondering what this emoji stuff is all about - the word emoji comes from Japanese e ‘picture’ and moji ‘character’ and the resemblance to the English words emotion and emoticon is purely coincidental, according to Wikipedia.

MOJI is a pictogram, logogram, ideogram or smiley embedded in text and used in electronic messages and web pages. The primary function of emoji is to fill in emotional cues otherwise missing from typed conversation.

Stinger gave us an update on precuations taken by one of his Three Amigos before last week’s twilight bowls at Calivil. To make sure the bowls made their intended destination, and not the Loddon River after a disastrous outing in Bendigo, The Oracle sent his home with his sister for safekeeping.

INALLY this week, with international travel back on the cards, comes this story from Taipei: on three occasions this past summer, Songshan Airport allowed 60 passengers to check in, collect their boarding passes, clear security, wait at their gate and board an Airbus.

The plane’s destination? Nowhere. The groups were the lucky winners of a contest that let people role-play (remember) a day at the airport.

Couple celebrates 50 years CHRIS and Bernie Sharp on Saturday celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary.

The popular owners of Sharp’s Bazaar in Inglewood received many good wishes throughout the day. Chris recalled they were married on a 40-degree day in Boronia in 1972.

They have been in Inglewood for 15 years.

“It’s a great place and we’re glad we made the move here,” Chris said.

Help bus travelling through region SERVICES Australia’s mobile centre will be travelling the Loddon next month.

The mobile service provides information and access on Federal Government payments and

forms including Centrelink and Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

The bus is scheduled to visit Pyramid Hill on March 2, Bridgewater on March 3 and Boort on March 8.

COVID program cuts, NDIS rejection blamed for ...

Demise of a service

A COMMUNITY bus service that operated for more than a decade has shut down after losing $13,000.

Inglewood Community Neighbourhood House says patronage and use have dramatically dropped since COVID. And what may have been a financial lifeline after the service lost $13,000 in six months, did not get off the ground with a National Disability Insurance Scheme provider bid unsuccessful.

House manager Kim Hanlon said the bus ran its final service in December and the house committee last week it would not return. Options are being investigated to sell the bus.

Ms Hanlon said the bus had only operated four days a week with one passenger from Inglewood daily, one every second Wednesday and two regular Bendigo-based passengers on the Inglewood-Bendigo trip in recent months..

“The bus did run when it could

throughout 2021. It was a stop, start year with very few passengers,” she said “Our passengers did not have programs to go to.

It was terrible.

“COVID is really the event that ended the service. There were no casual hires in 2021 and only one so far this year.”

Ms Hanlon said she had previously approached the NDIS to become a service provider but that was rejected.

“Had our passengers included their bus travel in their packages, the service would not have ended. We could have been receiving $300 per week per passenger from the time NDIS began,” she said. “Instead we received zero.”

“This passenger now uses a Wedderburn-based taxi to be picked up in Inglewood, taken to Bendigo five days per week.

NDIS pays for this. The taxi driver thinks it’s Christmas!

“Unfortunately it was too little, too late for us. From the last financial year to date the service

cost us over $13,000. We hope to recover this loss through the sale of the asset or a new community transport project can be developed.”

Ms Hanlon said the local bus service started in 2010.

“We are so proud of what we have achieved and the many people we have helped over the past 10 years. It’s been quite the journey with many friendships being made,” she said “Inglewood and Districts Community Bank ... one of the finest.

They provided $20,000 to purchase our first pre-loved bus and three years later, when we had proved we knew what we were doing, another $60,000 was provided to purchase a new bus.

“Words cannot express how grateful we are.”

Ms Hanlon said the bus remained available for hire while looking at options.

“We would also like to hear from any organisation who has an idea or plan that might create a new life for our little bus.

“It may be a new local community transport option that results in seeing her darting about town again - who knows? If a new purpose cannot be found, the bus will be sold to the highest bidder.”

An NDIS spokesperson said: “Business decisions, such as future direction or whether to cease offering services, are a matter for individual organisations.

“The NDIS was established to provide individualised funding to support participants with permanent and significant disability to exercise choice and control to purchase the reasonable and necessary supports they require, opposed to the historical block funded model. “In the event that any NDIS participant is impacted, we reassure them and their families that we will work with them to access alternative services to meet their needs.”

NDIS said it had been unable to identify the Inglewood application.

Healthy local projects at heart of new initiatives NEW projects to increase healthy eating and physical activity in the Loddon were announced on Tuesday.

The initiatives from Healthy Heart of Victoria will be introduced over the next six months.

According to a statement from Loddon Shire, local initiatives as part of the broader

regional program will include three hydration stations. The shire said they would add to existing Healthy Heart of Victoria-Coliban Water hydration stations in Inglewood and Bridgewater.

Other local projects will see activation sessions planned for Boort, Pyramid Hill and Wedderburn outdoor fitness equipment,

wayfinding and instructional signage along Wedderburn’s Nardoo Trail and installation of outdoor fitness equipment in Inglewood, The shire’s statement said the Loddon would be part of a regional Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food online cooking course. “Further updates and information will be provided as projects are underway,” the shire said.

Novavax to arrive AUSTRALIA’S first protein vaccine Novavax has been added to the COVID vaccine rollout from this week and supplies are expected in the Loddon within days. Inglewood Pharmacy is among community pharmacies to be included in the rollout.

The Federal Government has secured 51 million doses of Novavax to compliment the vaccine rollout.

Latest numbers THERE were 31 active cases of COVID-19 in the Loddon on Tuesday. The total number of cases for the shire since the first pandemic outbreak two years ago is now 339.

NEW firewood collection rules will apply in the Loddon from next month.

Under changes, local communities gain greater access to available firewood on public land.

In changes announced last week, firewood collection from designated areas in state forests within parts of central Victoria will be restricted to residents of specific local shires.

Fourteen state forests in the Loddon Shire and adjoining areas have been included on the list.

It includes Kingower, Sunday Morning Hills, Glenalbyn and Inglewood, Wedderburn North and Wedderburn South West In the Tarnagulla and Dunolly district, state forests include Bealiba/Barp, Harvest Home, Llanelly, Longbush, Moliagul, Mt Hooghly, Tarnagulla and WaanyarraDunolly.

Visitors from interstate and other parts of Victoria, will no longer be able to access firewood from state forests in the region.

Forest Fire Management Victoria forest planning team leader Amy Groch said the

changes would maintain a more sustainable domestic firewood supply for local residents and communities.

“While firewood is free to collect, supply is not unlimited. This means firewood needs to be managed responsibly to ensure environmental sustainability,” Ms Groch said.

“These new restrictions have been introduced following extensive community consultation. Firewood can only be taken from designated firewood collection areas in state forests during approved autumn and spring collection seasons, from 1 March to 30 June and from 1 September to 30 November “Designated firewood collection areas are selected for a range of reasons including the availability of firewood, community safety, and to protect sites of cultural and environmental significance.”

Restrictions are still in place for firewood collection near Cohuna. Only residents from Loddon, Campaspe, Gannawarra and Swan Hill council areas can collect from Gunbower State Forest.

Brigade kick-starts new defib A $200 donation from Tarnagulla Fire Brigade has kick-started the town’s bid to replace its defibrillator.

Brigade secretary Paul Davies said members did not hesitate to respond to a request from the town hall committee’s appeal to help raise $2000.

“The defibrillator is a vital piece of lifesaving equipment for our community and it is pretty important that the town has an up-to-date defibrillator,” he said.

The hall committee was told the defibrillator needed replacement, just after purchasing replacement batteries.

President Barry Condick told the Loddon Herald last week that funds were tight for the volunteer committee.

The committee has now written to local organisation asking for donations towards the new defibrillator.

“We don’t want to let it (defibrillator) go,” Mr Condick said.

SCARRED TREE MASTERPLAN

Close to concept stage CONCEPT designs for the Lake Boort Scarred Tree Masterplan will be released “in a few weeks” after preliminary feedback at an online forum last Friday.

Initial ideas were presented to by project manager Sharon Wells.

The forum. promoted online early last week, comes as the deadline for April completion of the project looms.

Ms Wells said: “The Boort Scarred Tree project will be one of the first areas in Victoria to develop a distinctly Indigenous product, a key opportunity area for growth and development as defined in the 2016 Victorian Visitor Economy Strategy, which will offer an accessible and rich experience for local, intrastate, interstate and international visitors.

“The (scarred tree) masterplan will be informed by the views and express wishes of the Dja Dja Wurrung people on how their Aboriginal cultural heritage can be used and shared (and) the Lake Boort Reserve Management Plan March 2018.

“The trees have been estimated to be over 300 years of age and retain the scars from the cutting of bark for canoes, shields, food, water or baby carriers and other purposes. It is one of the few remaining sites in Australia where you can see trees with toe-hold

Ward councillor Neil Beattie said after the forum it would be important to have the balance right in the plan.

the lake bed and associated fire risks that has to be balanced with any concepts that may require trying to secure water and offsetting evaporation,” he said.

The document says these experiences include providing an understanding of the current value of tourism to the Boort economy and understanding of current visitor numbers to Lake Boort.

suggestions are that the walking/cycling track should encompass the whole lake which is just over 7km.

“No one wants to walk half way and then walk back along the same track. There is so much to see on the way for example hundreds of scarred trees, middens, stone scatters, great vegetation and many birds.

“Tourists could also see the original weir built in 1844, one of the oldest structures from the first settlers in the shire.

“Also I suggest on the east bank to construct a lookout to photograph the amazing sunsets and the large area of scarred trees.

“At this point people can visit the recent burials that have been returned to country.

“From this lookout would be the closest point to walk to the Kinypanial Creek where most of the amazing scarred trees are.”

Ms Wells said: “We are now at the stage of considering ideas, with an online public meeting to be held in a few weeks to present a concept.”

She said a public meeting had been held in Boort pre-COVID to discuss the interest in the masterplan with the community.

“It was from this point we began to move forward, with COVID delaying progress, up until this point,” Ms Wells said.

Views differ on future THE 2018 Lake Boort Management Plan said nature-based activities and cultural interpretation would be the primary uses of Lake Boort: However, it said duck hunting would continue to be permitted during designated seasons.

Allowing duck hunting is a concern for Paul Haw as the concepts are developed for the scarred tree masterplan.

“Shooting and tourism just do not mix! Just imagine being a tourist on duck opening day informed that it was illegal to walk on the tracks and boardwalks,” he said.

Field and Game Australia officials attended last Friday’s forum. “We are all respectful of the significance of the lake and it’s indigenous connections, highlighting the rich history and educating people about this can only increase awareness,” it said.

“How good would it be for us all to witness and learn more of these cultural practices and be included?

“Sustainable hunting was a big part of that history, equally as important to us today and needs to remain in any future development.

“It was also great to see local residents that mentioned their history and hunting experiences on the lake in years past and their passion in seeing it continue safely and legally.”

Great butterfly sleuth

GEORGIE Custance is hunting the Loddon for a tiny cryptic butterfly.

Historical sightings of the critically endangered ant-blue butterfly has had the Threatened Species Conservancy ecologist scaling the heights of Mount Korong with intern Kirsten Boehm.

They have been on the sleuthing trail of that historic sighting of the large ant-blue butterfly. ““There no accurate date or much information but the record is of the large blue (butterfly),” she said.

Georgie has not only been looking for the critically-endangered butterfly but one of its fa-

vourite food creators, coconut ants.

The butterfly in both its small and large species is unique to Australia, the ants also found in New Guinea, Georgie says.

And with December through to February butterfly season, Georgie has been scouring Mount Korong, the Grampians and the Little Desert for the small and large ant-blue species.

Warm days have been best to be on the trail.

“Butterflies need heat,” Georgie said, investigating higher spots where “hill-topping” males select the best locations to attract females.

“Both the butterflies and the coconut ants are as cryptic as each other,” said Georgie.

While investigations at Mount Korong failed to find the ant-blue butterfly, a member of Georgis’s team has been more successful in Gippsland with the first sightings of the large variety in 20 years.

“Searching for small and cryptic butterflies can be challenging but anyone can give it a go if they have a camera or even just a smartphone,” she said.

The search locally has not

ended and Georgie hopes Loddon residents will join the Victorian Ant-Blue Butterflies Project.

She says people can upload photographs to iNaturalist if they think they see ants or butterflies that could resemble the rare species.

VFF fears department job losses VICTORIAN Farmers Federation says reports that 145 jobs will be cut from Agriculture Victoria makes it harder for farmers to meet community expectations.

VFF president Emma Germano said the decision wa a backwards step for Agriculture in Victoria.

Visitors are restricted to two (2) people per resident at any one time.

One-way option as street plan gets fresh look REDUCING part of Verdon Street to oneway traffic is among proposals being considered by Inglewood Development and Tourism as it reviews a six-year-old streetscape development plan.

The committee was footing the plan review cost and wanted to “keep Inglewood looking like Inglewood, an old-fashioned goldmining town”, said secretary Pauline Wellman.

Pauline said making Verdon Street oneway, between Brooke and Grant Streets, would address local traffic management concerns.

“Vehicles turning into Brooke Street from Grant Street have to nose out onto the Calder Highway to see other vehicles,” she said.

Pauline said the 2016 plan review could see latest design features included in an update, including trees to cool roads and footpaths in the main street.

“Trees take carbon-dioxide out of the road. Green space, shade, places for trees are also good for people’s wellbeing.” she said.

And the committee wants to see power lines put underground to help the town position itself as a heritage location for movies and advertising commercials.

The 2016 plan put works proposed at more than $1.23 million to build “on Inglewood’s pride in it’s street presence”.

“The masterplan proposals aim to enhance this character While the highway is Inglewood’s trading spine, the secondary streets support existing and emerging businesses and facilities as well as a offering a reprieve from through traffic,” the plan said.

Pauline said the committee would ask residents for their ideas and suggestions as the plan was reviewed and possibly revised.

“The current plan is five or six years old.

Lots of things have changed in that time but we want to get it back in front of (Loddon Shire) council and on the table,” she said.

“And then we can start the process running to find funding to make it happen.

“We’ve seen streetscape work in other Loddon towns and what has happened along the river at Bridgewater. It will be good to have something also happen in Inglewood.”

Committee members will meet with streetscape plan designers early next month as part of renewed community consultation and review.

Three exciting spaces are evolving

There are three exciting spaces currently being redeveloped at BDH. The front courtyard facing Kiniry Street is currently being updated to become a Healing Garden.

BDH Community Advisory Committee is working with our local Dja Dja Wurrung community to create a space that is culturally sensitive and reflective of our connection to our indigenous heritage.

The garden is evolving, concrete paths have been laid, a fixed shade structure has been constructed and soil has begun to be prepared for plantings, works are being overseen by the expert eye of Paul Haw.

The internal centre courtyard is undergoing redevelopment to make it a more stimulating and accessible space for our aged care residents and patients.

Raised garden beds are being installed for easy access, with colourful plantings and herbs and vegetables.

The area above the hospital on the old hostel site will become our Community Kitchen Garden.

This is a funded project that will see some fruit/nut trees planted, gazebo shade structures, paths and seating to name a few.

Our op-shop is receiving donations The Boort Op Shop raises funds with all proceeds donated to Boort District Health.

The ongoing efforts of the amazing volunteers running the op-shop greatly assists BDH activities. Donations of

clothes, toys and household items for sale. No furniture.

‘Signal’ message wrong: resident ONE word on the Albert Borella VC information board in Wedderburn’s Soldiers’ Memorial Park should be corrected to remove confusion on a famous soldier’s act of bravery.

That’s the view of resident Peter Norman who says “signal” in describing Borella’s actions in World War One is inconsistent with the Victoria Cross citation.

Mr Norman said official records of combat at VillersBretonneux, France, in July 1918 that saw Borella awarded the highest medal for bravery referred to a single act.

“The sign is contrary to all official citations and is not only confusing but wrong,” Mr Norman said.

“It makes sense to correct the wording.

“As it is, this is an insult to sol-

diers. If we are going to honour someone, do it properly.”

Borella was awarded the Victoria Cross after he “single-handedly captured a machinegun.

Then, after clearing a trench and dug-outs, he inspired his men to hold out during heavy enemy counter-attacks”.

The “single-handed” description of bravery was also used to describe Jacka’s actions more than three years earlier at Gallipoli.

Mr Norman said he had written to Loddon Shire Council requesting the sign be changed to reflect the official Victoria Cross citation.

The commemorative sculptures were unveiled on ANZAC Day 2018 and are the centrepiece of soldiers’ memorial park.

A right royal jubilee tree?

THE Loddon could have a special link to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The shire council says it will consider applying to plant special trees marking Queen Elizabeth’s 70th year on the throne.

“Council will consider this grant opportunity in more detail if potential eligible projects are identified, and will provide information about this grant opportunity to local community groups,” the shire told the Loddon Herald.

Grants from $2500 to $20,000 are available with each federal electorate eligible to receive up to $100,000 for up to 10 projects.

$72,000 for wetlands project

RESTORATION of wetlands on Greg and Jo Bear’s Canary Island property has been boosted with a Murray–Darling Healthy Rivers Program grant.

Member for Mallee Anne Webster on Tuesday announced the $72,276 grant, one of eight across the region.

The project will build strong collaboration with Barapa Barapa Aboriginal Corporation, North Central Catchment Management

Authority, schools and ecologists to create flourishing waterways and riparian ecosystems for indigenous fauna, flora and freshwater fish, including the southern pygmy perch.

“We’re seeing also strong community collaboration for a project on the Loddon River, where local farmers, catchment managers, and Boort schoolkids will get involved to plant 12,000 acquatic plants,” Dr Webster said,

“This will allow them to release 200 critically endangered silver perch fingerlings and support other threatened fish species.

“It’s fantastic to see the Australian Government supporting Mallee by funding eight new Healthy Rivers grants for community-led projects to improve the health of our waterways.”

The program’s latest funding round allocated $11.5 million to 72 projects .

No update on post future THE success of Australia Post’s call for expression of interest to provide future postal services in Inglewood remains unclear.

After more than 40 years as the local postmaster, post office owner, Trevor Ralph first signalled his plans to retire three years ago and has been unable to find a buyer for the business.

Expressions of interest in the licence closed a fortnight ago. Australia Post has been contacted for comment on the process.

A FEW days before Christmas, the Federal Government announced a Parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s regional newspapers.

The terms of reference for this inquiry, its committee being chaired by Mallee MP Anne Webster, include the extent to which there has been entry into these or other markets by new operators, particularly small businesses, and The degree to which there has been economic recovery in regional and remote markets from the impacts of COVID, and whether this has led to advertising revenue improving.

As one of those new entrants to the newspaper landscape, the Loddon Herald has made a submission along with 51 other entities ranging from fellow small rural newspaper publishers to the large outfits and overseas-based operators.

We have told the inquiry that the Loddon Herald has filled the void left when the previous newspaper ceased publication and returned a platform – a voice – to local communities. The business model is quite lean: there is not an army of journalists in a newsroom or salespeople and telemarketers pitching advertisements to the family-owned and one-person small businesses.

Any success for the Loddon Herald is driven by the passion and commitment

of rural communities to have their platform, projecting and heralding voices of rural Australia that have often been in the wilderness of mainstream consideration not just since COVID but in some cases for multiple decades albeit in times of disaster and tragedy that attracts the interest of larger media outfits based in regional capitals and capital cities or the occasional “tick a box” treatment.

The value and importance of the local newspaper across the generations is a selling point to all potential advertisers (and that includes government, its agencies and authorities). Newspapers have again proven their importance to government throughout the pandemic as a vital and imperative vehicle to communicating information.

Government, we submitted, has an ongoing responsibility in availing themselves of the forum that is newspapers to communicate and connect with people in rural communities. Newspapers – if I may borrow a phrase once uttered by a journalist in times long ago – are not charities or benevolent institutions. Advertising is key to the survival, sustainability and resurgence of local country newspapers.

Many large media outlets use the descriptor “local” in badging what they do

yet, unfortunately, the geographic definition of its application can be many hundreds of kilometres from one end of the boundary to the other. The return of true local newspapers, in the communities and on the ground over the past two years is to be celebrated.

The demise of scores of rural newspapers over the past two years has been traumatic for the industry and communities and perhaps COVID provided the reason or cause of final cessation of publication that had been in the making for some years in part the result of remote-control ownership and direction.

The local model is back and will flourish with recognition (including advertising dollars) from across the spectrum – rural communities have lost their voice once, a second absence of the country voice in local towns would economically and socially disadvantage many areas of Australia.

While it is welcomed that the Government has initiated this inquiry, sadly, it is unlikely to achieve much. With a federal election due to be called within weeks, the committee and this inquiry will lapse.

Hopefully, this inquiry will be re-established early in the term of the next Parliament. To not do that, would demonstrate only lip service to rural communities.

I ask Glynn as a wildlife rescuer, how many kangaroos has he had to euthanase and leave on the side of the road for all roadusers to view? If this facility goes ahead it would alleviate the problem for roadusers as the mobs would be smaller and not vying for space to graze.

Many people support this proposal but don’t speak because of the rhetoric and bias of people like him. Country people love their country but also they use a commonsense approach to sustainable management of their land, livestock and wildlife.

Under the current permit system a land holder can shoot the ‘roos provided they have a valid firearms licence for the category of firearm needed to do the job and then leave them laying on the ground to rot, causing a flystrike problem for the farmer. Or they can get a shooter in who removes the carcasses for processing, this is a win win answer to all the problems.

The future is sustainable Sir, In response to Glynn Jarrett and Chrissy Hu’s letters ( Loddon Herald, February 3rd ), I assure you I am not so misinformed as he states.

Since when does a company buy another property to expand its business if it knows that in two years it will close? It looks to the future and the sustainability of that business.

The quota system used by the government ensures that the Kangaroos will still be in sufficient numbers to ensure their survival. The estimated numbers of ‘roos in Victoria by government stats is between 1.2 and 1.3 million . the quota is based on 10 per cent of that number.

This includes those animals destroyed under the farm animal control permit.

As this year is looking to be an excellent breeding year for the kangaroo, these quotas are very sustainable in the long term.

If there were no culling then what would happen in drought times when a large number of animals would end up diseased and dying? The last time that

Rabbits buy a car MARGARET Curnick remembers being driven home from the movies in a 1928 Buick with side canvas blinds instead of windows.

There was a thick coat Don would give her to keep warm in those courting day before the two married a few years later.

That same Buick, to be sold at a clearing sale next month on the family property at Fiery Flat, was later cut down to a utilitystyle vehicle, carting equipment and produce around the property. The rear panels still in storage today.

“When Don left school at 16 to work on the farm with his father Harry in 1947, he was running a team of eight horses,” Margaret said.

“Extra income came from hunting rabbits and selling them to Jack Edwards in Wedderburn for one shilling and threepence a pair.

“Don would get up 50 pairs a night. His most successful night was 130 pairs.

“In summer, he would set up a wire netting chute near a dam to trap the rabits.

“They had to be delivered within 24 hours of being caught and skinned and were taken to Wedderburn, covered in hessian to avoid fly strike.”

Margaret Curnick with a photograph of the 1928 Buick, she remembers with canvas side blinds flapping on cold nights, as future husband Don drove her home from the movies. LH PHOTO working horses, harnesses included, for £40 and rabbits earned Don enough money to buy a 1950 Vanguard Standard ute, another of the old vehicles and farming machinery and implements that will go under the auctioneer’s hammer.

“He paid £1050 for the Vanguard, replacing the Buick Tourer,” Margaret said.

The family still has the original Buick manual with instructions for care and maintenance. The Vanguard was purchased from W. Smith and Son at Borung, Don’s sister Ruth married Geoff Smith, “the son in the business”, said Don and Margaret’s son Peter.

The ute was well used for driving lessons in the Curnick family after Don and Margaret were

married in 1954. “Even then, there were still horses working on some district farms,” Margaret recalls.

The Curnicks farmed more than 1200 hectares, breeding Merinos until switching to crossbreds with Dorsets and fat lambs in the 1990s.

There were also the crops and chickens, pullets being sold in Charlton.

“They (the Curnick family) were farmers. There were some very good crops over the years too. And wool ... the biggest one year was 115 bales,” she said.

And throughout the decades, as Don and Margaret’s agricultural machinery and impelements were updated, the collection covering a century of transport and farming also grew.

Items of other family members eventually made their way to the Fiery Flat property.

“Some of Uncle Charlie Jones’ bits and pieces were brought here,” Margaret said.

Relics from the days of horse remain - hoof cutters, bellows in the old blacksmith shop, a gig.

The Buick made a comeback, too, in the 1970s when it featured in the back-to Korong Vale parade, masquerading as the Fiery Creek Fire Brigade truck.

The sale inventory shows the Curnicks were always fire vigilant - six of the old heavy metal knapsacks, in their day a

revolutionary improvement on hesian-strip beaters strenuously thumped into flames - will also find a new home after the clearing sale. Peter remembers when the Buick would be out at night used for spotlighting, the hunting of rabbits.

Margaret and Peter have stories about so many of the items now listed for sale and memories of a family farm and a family part of the district.

Margaret recalls, talking rabbits again, that they caught the furry pest to raise money for the Korong Vale cricket club to buy new gear. “The won the premiership that year,” she said.

As for the future of the collection, Margaret said: “Let’s hope it can be of some use to people some how”.

This week, however, the 88-year-old has a real bright moment to enjoy.

Margaret will meet with first great-grandchild for the first time.

Maeve Lili is 10 months old and will travel with mum Nicola from Queensland to the Loddon.

Interstate travel restrictions throughout the past year had prevented Margaret from meeting great-grandchild number one.

And as the Curnick famly goes into another generation, there is no doubt Margaret will have even more stories to share.

System’s season reserves THE Loddon system had reserves available for next season, Northern Victoria resource manager Mark Bailey said on Tuesday.

“The Murray, Goulburn, Campaspe and Loddon systems have reserves available for 2022-23,” Dr Bailey said.

“Based on estimated use to the end of the season, opening seasonal determinations in the Murray system are likely to be around 80 per cent of HRWS. “In the Goulburn, Campaspe and Loddon systems, the open-

ing seasonal determinations are expected to start at about 50 per cent HRWS. That’s under our dry outlook category, which is much drier than current catchmentsconditions.”

Meanwhile, Dr Bailey said the Bureau of Meteorology seasonal outlook for the March to May did not strongly favour above- or below- average rainfall across northern Victoria.

La Niña conditions continue in the tropical Pacific and are expected to remain until midautumn.

Marilyn will share story

PYRAMID Hill’s Marilyn Fernandez will be one of the keynote speakers at next month’s Women on Farms Gathering in Inglewood.

Marilyn arrived in Pyramid Hill more than a decade ago from the Philippines to work at a local piggery.

Her husband Richard and their five children later arrived in the town with help from the local community.

WOFG chairperson Colleen Condliffe said Marilyn would share her story at the event’s

welcome dinner on March 25 where members of the region’s Filipino community would also perform traditional dances.

The program for the three-day WOFG was released this week.

Dr Tahnee Bridson and newspaper columnist Genevieve Barlow will be keynote speakers at the final session of the gathering on the Sunday.

Tahnee is a junior doctor specialising in psychiatry at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. and passionate about advancing the field of mental health through

research and recently combined these two passions when offered a PhD position with Orygen (The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health). She has advocated for the wellbeing needs of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic establishing a national peer support network. Tahnee’s work was recognised by her home state and she was the 2022 Queensland Young Australian of the Year.

North Central LLEN Youth Leadership participants will also speak at the session.

SHEEP MARKET SUPPLY dropped again following last week’s cheaper market, with just 10,500 lambs and 4000 sheep yarded at Bendigo on Monday- 6000 less.

There was more weight and quality in the export run this week with some impressive 30kg cwt plus lambs on offer.

In contrast, the supply of genuine trade weighted lambs in slaughter condition was very limited.

Demand lifted with several buyers who had been quiet or absent showing more interest in capturing some market share.

Lamb prices were $5 to $18 dearer in a fluctuating sale, with some of the best results recorded late in the auction.

The mutton sale was $10 to $30/head dearer with the heaviest ewes gaining the most thanks to multiple export orders operating again.

Heavy shorn lambs over 30kg cwt from $250 to a top of $280, the average cost for processors lifting to an estimated 800c to 820c/kg cwt.

Heavy lambs, 26-30kg, from $230 to $260/head, the main run of fat score 4 crossbreds in this category averaging $245/head.

Neat trade lambs were very limited with the best 24-26kg cwt from $200 to $239 followed by $180 to $200/head for medium domestic pens.

Most of the better presented trade to heavy lambs sold in a range of 800c to 880c/kg cwt, noting there was still sales below 780c for plainer types or odd pen lots of a few head.

Fed Merino lambs sold to a top of $228.

Store lambs sold strongly at $155 to $177/

head for the better framed types in a dearer result.

The small yarding of sheep sold to much more robust demand compared to a week ago.

Heavy crossbred ewes to $210 to average around $200/hd.

Better lines of Merino ewes $135 to $198; better framed light sheep $75 to $125; secondary light ewes down to $36/ head.

Good lines of mutton were estimated as costing buyers over 600c/kg cwt again..

Hard Waste Collection 2022 Loddon Shire Council will be conducting its annual kerbside hard waste collection of metals, e-waste, furniture and white goods during March 2022 to coincide with Clean Up Australia Day on the first Sunday in March.

Hockey pilots new program

A REGIONAL co-ordinator will work with North Central Hockey Association over the next year on coaching, umpiring and administrator development.

Hockey Victoria announced this week the new co-ordinator would assist the North Central and Goulburn Valley Associations and Hockey Central Victoria.

It says the role will primarily focus on building capacity and capability within all three associations through the targeted delivery of coaching, umpiring, and administrator development.

The role will also support the associations in recruitment and retention initiatives of new junior participants (Hookin2Hockey to Club Hockey) and projects identified by the associations as areas of development.

The role will be the first of its kind, based in Regional Victoria

and will be used as a pilot model for the future deployment of regional hockey co-ordinators in other target areas of Regional Victoria.

Chief executive officer of Hockey Victoria, Andrew Skillern said: “This is a genuinely exciting development for our sport and a clear demonstration of collaboration across clubs, associations and the governing body.

“The growth of the game in our major regional centres like Bendigo and Shepparton is critical to the ongoing health and sustainability of the game in Victoria.

“We would like to thank Mark Bridge, Angela Poxon and Stephen Matthews for their commitment to the regional Steering committee throughout 2021.

“The group’s passion, energy, and excitement to see this pilot program delivered in 2022 has been highly valued by the team at HV. “

Barry awarded top honour

New life member Barry Kennedy.

BOORT’S Barry Kennedy has been awarded life membership of Kara Kara Golf Association.

The award recognises more than 40 years of service to the association.

The association thanked Barry for his incredible contribution of time and effort to benefit the district in administrative roles on committees, particularly in organising men’s pennant and shield day draws and rules, as well as the district events calendar.

He has attended information sessions on changes in rules and the course rating system, and has been one of the district’s foremost authority on latest requirements.

Barry has also accompanied the men’s country week team most years in support roles since his playing days in the early 80’s.

He was a player in Country

teams from 1982 to 1985 and then from the late 1980s to 2022 was Kara Kara’s liaison officer, manager and selector.

During the recent amalgamation process, he was meticulous in going through the model constitution making the necessary modifications to meet the unique structure of the Kara Kara Golf Association.

At club level in Boort, Barry has been champion and president. He is a life member of he club.

Barry was association president in 2013-2014. Since the late 1980s, he has been involved with the match committee and is currently the men’s captain.

Bliss second in Broken Hill Cup TOP class trotter Majestuoso won his fifth Group 1 of his career by winning $50,000 in the The Knight Pistol Trotters’ Cup at Melton on Saturday night.

Majestuoso is now in top spot in the Aurora Australis $50,000 trotters bonus series, the final race in the series, The TAB Australasian Trotting Grand Prix at Melton on February 26.

Heats of the NSW Oaks for three-year-old fillies will also be conducted.

Club marks new net project

BOORT-YANDO Cricket Club’s new nets will be officially put to use for the first time this evening.

The club is hosting a thank-you event for volunteers and business supporters who contributed to the project.

Loddon Shire Council also gave the club a $10,000 grant towards the new nets.

Meanwhile, the club is more than halfway to achieving its $10,000 appeal target for further improvements at its home ground at Boort District School Oval.

The club wants to build a new facility that will include a large open shade area with equipment storage room and

kitchenette and barbecue area. More than $6400 has been donated to the appeal that started last November.

The club’s under 13 side will begin its finals campaign in the Northern District association on Saturday when the young colts come up against Barham in the qualifying final.

In last Saturdays round, Boort Yando 6-66 was defeated by Murrabit 2-77.

Murrabit bowled exceptionally well taking some good wickets and dismissing Boort’s openers early. Best of the bats was Luke Boyd 25 not out while Jacob Malone and Finlay Arnold were key wicket takers.

Foursome backs up title for a second tournament CHARLIE Catto Memorial Fours tournament at Inglewood Bowling Club on Sunday was well patronised with a full field of 88 bowlers from district clubs.

Winners for the second year running were Braden Byrne and Leigh Robertson (Eaglehawk) teaming with Ian Chamberlain and Bob Grundy (Inglewood).

Runners-up were the North Bendigo rink lead by Daniel Taig.

The final, between with two young skippers from on fire, was of a very high standard and had a large crowd that stayed back to watch enthralled.

The annual tournament was sponsored

by Loddon Shire, Napier Park Funerals, Inglewood and Districts Community Bank, Champions IGA/Mitre 10 and Australian Eucalyptus Company.

DINGEE is back in the race for Bendigo bowls Division 5 finals’ action after Saturday’s round.

After being on the wrong side of the scoreboard in several close finishes in recent weeks, Dingee had the advantage with a fourshot victory over Inglewood.

And with Calivil suddenly pulling out all stops to avoid relegation just a year after playing off for the flag, its win over more fancied Campbells Creek catapulted Dingee back into the four with three rounds to go.

Calivil certainly did its neighbours a good turn by claiming the upset win.

Inglewood hosted Dingee and were keen to get a win on the board.

Unfortunately, as hard as they all fought, it didn’t quite happen and they ended up losing by four shots.

The “Cafe 3517” prize for the best performed Inglewood rink went to Arthur Harrison, Trevor Schill, Bruce Moffatt and Joan “the best Roberts” Roberts with an impressive 20-shot victory.

Inglewood’s Division 1 team travelled to Moama eager to do well, but unfortunately couldn’t quite match it with the strong Moama side.

What a pleasure it was to have Dale Jackson return and see him combine well with Mal McLean, Mark Roberts and Daniel Garrett for a confidence building 12-shot win and they are this week’s winner of the The Fat Butcher/ Empire State Hotel best performed rink award.

Also, congratulations to Daniel Garrett on playing his first game of Division 1 pennant.

The final scores were Inglewood 75 shots (two points) to Moama 87 shots (16 points).

In last week’s Bendigo midweek pennant, Inglewood’s Division 1 team, playing at home, lost a tight contest by 13 shots to Kangaroo Flat.

The final score being Inglewood 50 shots (two points) to Kangaroo Flat 63 shots (14 points).

ANOTHER CHANCE Despite going into the North Central Division semi-final as favourites, Korong Vale lowered its colours for a second week running.

son in the final home and away game, Korong Vale back at full strength still could not match the power of Charlton which won all rinks.

With a few families unavailable, Serpentine forfeited its match to Calivil North.

And with both Lake Meran and Calivil struggling to field players, that match was declared a shared forfeit.

More secure by the round DERBY is looking more secure in the Marong and District Tennis Association top four after Saturday’s round.

And that’s without taking to the courts after power side Harcourt was forced to forfeit.

Derby is now 7.5 points clear of Wilsons Reef and has a 20 per cent superior percentage.

Wilsons Reef, who went down to ladder leader Lockwood, comes up against Newbridge this Saturday.

It’s probably the last chance to sneak back into the top four for Wilsons Reef but Newbridge should have too much power and depth to relinquish its spot before the finals.

In the other matches last Saturday, both Marong and Newbridge had dominating wins against Woodvale and Woodstock.

A very Gooding championship day

NATHAN Gooding and Lee Lanyon have taken out the Boort men’s doubles’ championship.

The pair had to fight back after Steve Lanyon and Alister McDougal claimed the second set.

The championship went to a tiebreak with the final score 2-6, 6-0, 8-6.

Nathan paired up with Kristen Gooding, the ladies’ champion, to win the mixed title. In the ladies’ championship Kristen and Tayla Gooding defeated Rachel Weaver and Maree Stringer 6-1, 6-1.

Spots settle well before finals start LADDER positions are unlikely to change after this Saturday’s final home and away season round in Inglewood and District Tennis Association.

With Korong Vale’s season finished last Saturday, the four finalists will have one more hit out before season deciders get underway.

Powlett consolidated top spot on the ladder with a strong win over Korong Vale.

The closest sets were in the mixed with just 10 games separating the two teams.

Wedderburn Junction and Loddon Eagles each won 138 games but Junction had the edge in points and sets to claim honours Eagles’ men were best performed, edging out opponents by 10 games after set tallies were shared.

ONE ball short of a hat-trick, Boort-Yando skipper Jarrod Hodoras set up the team’s third successive Upper Loddon Cricket Association win on Saturday.

His stunning seven overs reaped 4-6 and included three maidens.

The Boort-Yando victory over Bridgewater came as Matt Giri hit an association season high of 144 with the bat for Arnold in its victory over Wedderburn.

At Boort, Bridgewater was reeling at 3-18 after seven overs where Hodoras, who had already claimed opener Tom McKinley for three, then unleashed taking out Bloom and Harry McKimley with successive balls and two deliveries later, Naughton.

It was Fergus Bear who claimed the prize wicket of Chas Pickering, taking out Bridgewater’s top scorer.

The Bridgewater tail offered no resistance and the team was all out two balls short of the allocated 35 overs.

Bear was key with the bat for Boort-Yando, hitting an unbeaten 84. With Bridgewater’s bowling often awry - 25 extras - the home team batted through 32 overs to finish 20 runs ahead.

At Arnold, Giri was in scintillating form as the opening partnership with Phil Scholes just kept scoring before Wedderbrn veteran Steve Giorlando claimed

Hartnell, Wyman bat Band to a rousing season finish WEDDERBURN Band saved their best for last in round nine of Upper Loddon junior cricket on Saturday.

Playing in their final game of the season, Wedderburn had their first win when they defeated Bridgewater.

Arnold won the other game by comfortably accounting for Kingower.

Wedderburn travelled down the highway to Bridgewater and sent the home team into bat.

Bridgewater didn’t lose a wicket until the score had reached sixty, but after this the runs dried up and their innings closed at 4-79.

Toby Naughton continued his good form to retire on 32 while Hunter Daldy scored his first run.

Scott Reid took bowling honours for Wedderburn claiming two wickets.

Wedderburn’s turn at the crease saw their batsmen not only able to occupy the crease, but this innings they were able to score runs as well.

Junior Whyman top scored with 26 which indeed was the best of any Wedderburn batsmen this season, and he was well supported by Beau Hartnell and this pair safely saw their team to their first win.

Naughton bowled a tight spell

Arnold travelled to Kingower and batted first after winning the toss. Kingower was unable to take a couple of early chances and Gabe Nevins and Jaspa Wendels put Arnold in a strong position by both scoring 30s.

Flynn Lock and Kale Hewitt kept the runs flowing and at time, Arnold’s total stood at 3-126.

Ryder Smith and Flynn Lonza were the wicket takers for Kingower.

Kingower’s innings was the complete opposite with smart catches being taken by Nevins and Campbell Hancock to put the innings under pressure.

The Murphy brothers Tyler and Riley did best for Kingower scoring 17 and 12 retired respectively and Kingower batted out their overs scoring 6-62.

Nevins, Wendels and Hancock gave little away in their bowling spells and each took a wicket.

Scholes’ wicket with Arnold on 155. Another 47 runs were added before first-year senior James Vander-Wetering finally sent Giri back to the pavilion.

Ryan Metelmann added 40 to Arnold’s total, supporting Giri and batting out to 35 overs.

While Wedderburn was without opening bowler Adam Postle, the absence of Arnold’s top bowler Cam Dale did not diminish the Redbacks’ bowling attack.

Michael Dale and Jaspa Wendels both claimed three wickets as Arnold had Wedderburn all out in under 32 overs, Luke Holt having come to the crease when his side was on 14 and seeing out the innings to finish 50 not out.

MEET NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK EARLY STARTERS TAKE TO COURTS WITH MUM

THE Loddon Valley’s newest junior football team has had its first training session.

Jade Clymo took players in the new East Loddon side through their paces. last week.

The club, based at the P12 college, is drawing juniors from the Calivil, Mitiamo and Bears Lagoon-Serpentine districts as it prepares for an under 18 debut in the 2022 four-team competition in April.

Maiden Gully has opted out of Loddon Valley juniors this season and hopes for the Bendigo Dockers to enter the competition have fallen through.

East Loddon will play against Inglewood, Bridgewater and Marong and the club’s formation has been described by league president Simon Tuohey as a positive for local junior sport.

“The East Loddon clubs had been without junior sides for several seasons. Now there is a junior club to engage and develop youth of the district,” he said.

“The players are being drawn from the catchment area of East Loddon College.

“We don’t have enough kids to have a side in each town but the kids still need a team to play in.

“We don’t want our junior competition to fall over and lose the pathway to play in the communities as part of a family day of sport ... it’s all about the families.”

Tuohey said the league was disappointed Maiden Gully had decided to withdraw from the junior competition, “particularly with other clubs who have gone to great lengths to secure players and make sure we have a competition this season”.

“Five clubs would have been better than four but we are going ahead,” he said.

Late last year, a sixth club considered entering the Loddon Valley junior competition.

But Bendigo Dockers’ Justin Gee said there had been little interest from the club’s exiting players to field a Loddon Valley team in 2022.

“Most of the players leaving our existing age groups had already committed elsewhere,” he said, not dismissing future efforts to form a team.

Tuohey said the junior draw would be released shortly with under 18 teams playing on the same day as seniors where possible.

The East Loddon team is working on its nickname and theme song at weekly training sessions.

Tuohey has encouraged juniors looking for a game this season to contact their local club.
