WELL OILED GROVE PICKS TIPPED TO BE BEST YET

A RECORD olive harvest is predicted as workers and machinery head into local groves.

Picking of table olives has started at Boort’s Salute Oliva and the harvest of the 1.1 million-tree Boundary Bend grove will begin April 26.

Boundary Bend general manager horticulture Ruth Sutherland expects harvest of trees over the grove’s 3000 hectares will continue until late June.

“We have seen a strong demand for oil and this has brought the harvest forward,” she said, “It’s looking good and will potentially be our best harvest for yield and quality.”

Peter Eicher, of Salute Oliva, said his oil fruit harvest would start next month.

“We are planning on an early May start ... the ripening has been a bit slower this year because of the amount of fruit on trees,” he said.

“It will be our biggest ever and a contrast to last year that was poor across Victoria, South Australia and parts of New South Wales when there was good flowering but not the pollination due to hot weather.”

Peter expects to pick up to 80 tonnes of olives.

LISTEN UP! STRUMMING TUNES SHARED AROUND THE WORLD THE banks of the Loddon River were the perfect setting as ukele players recorded their tunes for the world-wide 100 Days of Uke project.

Bendigo’s Kaye Nankervis joined Terry Watson and Kaye Penny and other members of Goldfields Ukestra.

Kaye Penny, from Bridgewater, only took up the ukele last year with the encouragement of long-time friend Terry.

The two first met 50 years ago when both lived in Serpentine.

“I just love music and singing,” Kaye said.

The online project is now in its eighth year and Goldfields Ukestra has been posting a new tune every Wednesday.

Kaye invited her fellow ukele strummers to Bridgewater for their latest session, playing along under the gum trees that line the river.

T’S simply wonderful to see footballers and netballers back in action after a season that wasn’t in 2020. The iconic Legends Bar at Mitiamo had 18 months of dust and cobwebs swept away by the euphoria alone for the season start last Saturday - the shed with more atmosphere and more tall stories than that other MCG inner sanctum they call the Long Room or those erudite callers into the Coodabeens on a Saturday morning.

I

t got me thinking about a legend of VFL and bush footy going back a few years, one Brian “Muncher” Moloney. The shoe shop owner made his mark in the country after time at Carlton and St Kilda. A very much in-demand motivational speaker for footy clubs, Muncher would swallow a dictionary and a Thersaurus before geeing up teams. Perhaps trying to emulate his brother who was a professor of Australian history in Canberra, Muncher would use big, very big, words and then ... with a long pause for theatrical effect, tell the players they were impressed. Why? Because he was using big words, didnt know what they meant, and neither did he! That’s was Muncher’s story and he stuck to it.

here was another one-time VFL player who settled in the bush. Known for two great sayings - “that’s my boy” whenever favourite son kicked a goal, and “my case is rested” when trying to win an argument at after-match refreshments.

NEW GARDEN HONOURS A TOWN STALWART AS ...

TRIBUTE UNVEILED

A MEMORIAL garden with silhouette of Dingee stalwart Frank Winzar was officially unveiled on Monday.

The entrance to Dingee Bush Nursing Centre now pays tribute to the 40-year member of the centre’s board and gardener at local facilities who died last year, aged 94.

More than 60 people attended the ceremony where centre board president Geoff Thomas and manager Kylie Smith unveiled the metal silohouette of Frank watering the garden.

Among them were members of Frank’s family including grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Kylie described Frank as a wonderful person who in the four years she had been at the centre would be sitting on a stool watering the gardens every morning.

“He would then say hello or go off to his next job ... the gardens, the bowls,” she said.

Mr Thomas said: “We lost some beautiful people in 2020 ... Frank was one.”

He said the unveiling provided an opportunity for the community and family to remember Frank.

“He poured his heart and soul into Dingee. He spent his life caring in so many organisations. He and Kevin Pollock transformed the bland facade of the (bush nursing) centre.”

Local progress association president John Gledhill said Frank had been a founding and life member of the association.

Town fatality AN INGLEWOOD woman, 45, died in a crash in Belmont Street, Inglewood, late Tuesday. Police said the single-vehicle crash happened about 11pm. The woman was the only occupant in the vehicle that hit a tree. Investigations are continuing.

History author Geoff gets booked for life LODDON author Geoff Arnott last week launched his second book and was promptly made a life member of Wedderburn Historical Records Society.

The presentation was made by his brother and society president Darryl and vice-president Ray Tonkin at the release of Remembering Wedderburn and Surround Towns.

Last year Geoff, assisted by drone photography from Darryl, released his second book but due to COVID restric-

tions, the official book release had to wait.

Geoff has provided much assistance to the museum over a number of years including his first book The Golden Harvest – A History of Wedderburn written with Keith Ring in 2014.

The book launch was attended by members and guests including Cr Gavan Holt who wrote the foreword for the book. Shire of Loddon and the Bendigo Bank contributed to funding for the project.

Swap meet given a green light THE annual Wedderburn Swap Meet is back after the town’s mechanical engine and machinery society last week decided to hold the event next month.

President Trevor Bailey said the society finalised plans for the May 15 swap meet after reviewing COVID precautions.

The meet is expected to have up to 50 stallholders and will run back-toback with a similar event in Lockington the next day.

Trevor said the society also planned to proceed with its rally in September with indications of more than 150 tractors making the trek to Wedderburn.

Weighbridge petition A PETITION has started in Tarnagulla to better protect the town’s historic

IN BRIEF weighbridge. Petition organisers say they want Loddon Shire Council to urgently repair or replace the Gladstone Street shed housing the weighbridge.

The weighbridge scales were first installed at the flour mill in 1888 and moved to the present location in 1927.

During Australia’s bicentenary in 1988, the shed was erected to protect the scales.

Winery showcase LODDON vineyards are this weekend showcasing their wines at a two-day festival in Bendigo. The wineries are part of the Bendigo Wine Region and the festival celebrates the end of the season’s outstanding vintage.

Diggers urge: Arrive early on ANZAC Day PEOPLE have been urged to arrive ahead of starting times for ANZAC Day commemorations across the Loddon.

Wedderburn and Korong Vale sub-branch president Roger Paterson said early arrival would ensure COVIDsafe protocols could be followed.

Mr Paterson said diggers did not want delays to the start of services, particularly the Dawn Stand-to.

People attending the 6.15am Wedderburn Dawn Service have been requested to enter the park through the gate on High Street with sign in by QR code preferred or by completing available forms.

He said people were also encouraged to Light up the Dawn.

“If you are not able to be present at the Dawn Service consider standing at your front gate or on the verandah with a candle to honour and remember the ANZACS,” Mr Paterson said.

Driveway and gateway tributes across the Loddon and Australia replaced tradition-

al services last when when COVID restrictions prohibited public gatherings.

At the conclusion of the Wedderburn Dawn Service a Gunfire Breakfast will be catered by the Lions Club of Wedderburn.

At 10am, a service will be held at Borella Park Korong Vale, followed by morning tea.

A modest traditional service will be held in Boort at 10am with wreaths being laid, flags raised and a minute silence.

The traditional march has been cancelled along with the ceremony in the Boort Memorial Hall.

Sub-president president Paul Haw said at least 300 people attended most years “and we hope that this momentum is maintained”.

In Boort, ANZAC tokens will be available from the local Newsagent, Post Office and from Rawlins’ Garage.

“At this stage there will be no one sitting up the street selling tokens unless conditions improve,” Mr Haw said.

Kindergarten using latest quality standards REVISED 2018 National Quality Standards are being used at Inglewood Kindergarten.

Loddon Shire says the use of the revised standards are preparing the kindergarten for its next assessment and rating visit.

“The kindergarten was due

to undertake the next assessment and rating visit in 2020, however this was postponed by the Department of Education due to COVID-19,” council said.

“We are currently awaiting advice from Department of Education and Training.”

National media reports at the weekend said Inglewood kindergarten was one of 60 across Victoria “working to meet operational standards”.

However, those reports used information from an assessment and rating visit at Inglewood in 2017.

On 15 th April in 2006 (Easter Saturday) the doors at Fusspots At Inglewood opened for the first time. Fifteen years on and the business is still going strong, albeit from different premises.

In 2006 the business was located at the former Charles Napier Hotel and initially operated from one small front room, the former hotel’s ante-room. Over time the business grew from that one room, to two rooms and then to three when the billiard room also became shop space.

When the new IGA supermarket was built in 2008 the old supermarket (former Nixon Bros store) was listed for sale and lay empty for a good couple of years.

After giving business relocation some thought, Catherine and Barry Norman made the decision to move their business into the former supermarket.

“We opened on Inglewood Alive day

in December 2012,” Catherine said. “It was a huge day for the town and being our first day in our new store foot traffic was consistent all day. The most notable feature of the new store for many locals were the gleaming rejuvenated floorboards which quickly became the talk of the town. It is a great space to showcase the range of wares we sell.”

In 2013 Fusspots At Inglewood was nominated, shortlisted and won the ‘Loddon Powercor Excellence Awards’ for Best Small Business.

Doing business the last few years has been challenging. During the second COVID shutdown last year the decision was made to open an online store.

Although it currently offers a limited number of wares this will grow over time. So far items have been sent to Queensland, South Australia, northern NSW, Western Australia and other parts of Australia.

There’s always a catch tarred with disdain IF ANY government was considering establishing a Department of Disdain; it would be the Andrews Labor government.

Because if you live in regional Victoria and you are aged 65 or older; this is a government that does not give a damn about you.

And that is never more obvious than when it comes to trying to access government services or funding opportunities.

There is only one way it can be done – their way or the highway.

In plain English, every time the Andrews Labor government comes up with something for we ‘oldies’ there is a catch.

You not only need a computer, you need the internet, you need to be fairly savvy in navigating your way around complex websites – and you need an email so the government can give you the heads up that another headache is headed your way.

Take the latest mess for the more vulnerable in our community – the government’s $250 one-off Power Saving Bonus.

After all the collateral damage of COVID, every little thing helps offset cost pressures and bill stress.

If you can get it.

Every time one of these offers comes along my office is besieged with calls and drop-in visits from people who don’t have a computer or don’t have a clue what to do with the relevant website if they can ever find it.

Without wanting to come across as a croaking old curmudgeon, I simply canCOST-SHIFTING between tiers of government has been the bane of local councils and country communities for decades.

And with the imposition of costs locally has come a shift in who is responsible ... for decisions, maintenance and upkeep.

The impact of this double standard really hit home during COVID when Australians were reduced to needing a permit to move around in their own country.

At the height of those draconian conditions I had a non-stop queue of seniors and assorted concession card holders through my door every day seeking assistance to get online and get a pass so they could get on with their lives.

You would be amazed how many people walking around Murray Plains all had the same email address – peter. walsh@parliament.vic.gov.au It had to be done that way because 90 per cent of those people don’t have, and never have had, an email.

Our senior citizens have invariably done their share of the hard yards; they have helped build Victoria into the state it is; they have paid their taxes and they have earned that retirement.

But you haven’t earned any favours from the Andrews Labor government

because, I suspect, you are now simply a cost on the budget sheet; no more blood can be squeezed out of you in the government’s rapacious search for more revenue to offset the billions and billions of overblown budgets creating the catastrophe its major works program has become.

Or to foot the multi-million dollar bill for its empty quarantine hotels.

And let’s not forget the Murray Basin Rail Project that was fully funded for its desperately needed upgrade; yet somehow the Andrews Labor government overspent (now there’s a surprise) and the job didn’t get done bet hey, it’s only regional Victoria so who gives a damn?

Well I do, so does my staff, which is why we are spending so much time filling in these forms, and complaining on your behalf, that government should be for all the people, not just the people who live in Melbourne; and certainly not just for the people with technology.

But as always it falls on the deaf ears of the Andrew Labor government.

In this era of the politically correct, his government is way out of step because of its ageist discrimination and right now I feel everyone who is not, or cannot be, part of cyberspace should go out and beg, borrow or (preferably not) steal a computer and send a message to Daniel Andrews on his social media platforms because that is the only way to get his attention.

THE DISTRICT WHERE SONS, FRIENDS ARE REMEMBERED

THE Mologa War Memorial is a lasting place of commemoration; a lonely reminder of a once thriving Victorian town and a testament to the Mologa and District Landcare Group who care for the memorial today.

It was on March 24, 2020, that marked 100 years since the memorial to the soldiers of World War One was unveiled by author Allison Marlow Paterson’s great-grandmother Sarah Marlow and her grandfather Allan Marlow.

Allison, a Sunshine Coast -based author was invited to deliver the centenary address on ANZAC Day 2020.

In the midst of the pandemic, the event was postponed. With the ANZAC service proceeding in 2021, the author deems the opportunity to provide the address as a great honour for both her and her family.

Allison’s adult book and its children’s version Anzac Sons (Big Sky Publishing) details the tragic story of the Marlow brothers and their service on the Western Front.

Since the publication of Anzac Sons, Allison has continued to write stories of family for children, and of area of Pyramid Hill area.

In her latest release, the second in a series for children about Australia’s military history titled Australia Remembers 2: Customs and Traditions of the Australian Defence Force, photos of Allison’s grandfather are used to depict aspects of the customs of the ADF. The first in the series Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and War Memorials features the Pyramid Hill Memorial Hall and the story of the Mologa War Memorial.

Like so many memorials about which we gather on our major days of commemoration, the funds to erect the memorial came from the work of community members.

In March, 1920, a report appeared in the Pyramid Hill Advertiser: Only a few months before, at the conclusion of 1919, the devastating influenza epidemic known as the Spanish flu had been declared over.

Under the heading Mologa Soldiers Memorial, it record-

AUTHOR and Mologa descendant Allison Marlow Paterson. ed: The residents of this district have worthily placed on record their estimation of their soldiers by erecting a handsome stone column, which was unveiled on Wednesday 24th,

by Mrs C. Marlow, to whom the honour was justly due, as is well known, by the fact that five of her sons volunteered, of whom three are in soldier’s graves in France … In the unveiling ceremony Lieut. A. Marlow escorted his mother on to the platform and the large assemblage stood bareheaded as the cords were cut and the covering Union Jack removed from the pedestal.

The memorial lists 28 young men who were associated with this small community of Mologa. There were 22 Anzacs who listed the town as their place of birth and 14 who called Mologa home when they enlisted.

Ten of these young men were never to return. By and large they were neighbours, they were mates, and they

were family. They left with a sense of duty and some with a sense of adventure.

Three sons of Sarah and Charles Marlow did not make it home – Charlie, 25, George, 24, and 19-year-old Albert.

A further seven sons are listed on this memorial under the heading Supreme Sacrifice – Will Street, Les Townsend, Jack Price, Ray Leed, Robert Campbell, Pat Ryan and Daniel O’Sullivan.

Also listed are those Mologa men whose luck held out and who made it home, some with physical scars and some with wounds they carried in their darkest moments and in their nightmares – Tom Alford, James Dillon, Charles Fyffe, David Fyffe, Alf Ferris, Tom Gray, Amos Haw, Knowlson Haw, Ewen Johnston, William Leed, Allan Marlow, Percy Marlow, Hugh Martin, Andrew Price, John Ryan, Michael Ryan, Herb Street and Wilsie Townsend.

Mologa had suffered greatly.

Of those who listed Mologa as home, 10 of the 14 of its gallant soldiers were buried on distant shores.

For families like those of Sarah and Charles Marlow, like the Townsends, the Leeds, the Prices, the Campbells, the Ryans and so many more across the world, no amount of patriotic words could ease their pain.

Creating lasting memorials to their young men became a priority and it was on 6 December 1918, that the com-

munity of Mologa gathered as reported in the Pyramid Hill Advertiser: In a corner of a nicely shaded and grassy paddock on Mr Pickles’ farm on Wednesday, a good number of district residents assembled at a picnic arranged for the purpose of raising funds to set up a suitable memorial to soldiers from the locality to recognise the valour of all and to keep in memory those who have fallen in the fight.

The deadly Spanish Influenza virus was shortly after detected in Victoria. In January 1919, the state was placed in quarantine. Public meetings were banned, public buildings shut, restrictions were placed on long-distance train travel and the border between NSW and Victoria was closed.

The virus soon spread to other states. It was not until the end of 1919 that the pandemic was over.

Allison says: “Today, we are dealing with a similar pandemic of a century ago – a deadly virus that has impacted our world and threatens those we love. Allison’s hope is, as we all continue to adjust to the changes taking place in our lives, that we take time to reflect and consider others.

“Let’s endeavour to emulate that same sense of community spirit of 100 before. The people rallied, they persevered and their monument was built.

“Thank you to the Mologa and District Landcare Group whose work in the preservation of the memorial is appreciated by the descendants of those whose names are etched in gold. It is a lastingreminder to us all of great service, courage, perseverance, and sacrifice.”

Tourism key as optimism builds: MP

VICTORIAN Upper House MP Tania Maxwell says local communities are heartened by strong visitation numbers across northern Victoria.

The MP last week toured parts of her region, including Boort where she met with Loddon Shire Mayor Neil Beattie, small businesses and local residents.

Ms Maxwell said there was a real sense of optimism returning to towns hit hard by COVID-19 restrictions over the last 12 months and that she appreciated the opportunity to speak directly with residents and businesses about their views and needs.

Ms Maxwell said tourism was vital to diversifying the economies of regional towns and while the mood was high, underlying concerns still lingered around securing staff and housing shortages.

THE STATE Parliament inquiry examining the devastating impact of COVID-19 on Victoria’s tourism and major events sector must conduct hearings in northern Victoria, said member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh.

Mr Walsh said the region’s tourism industry had been smashed by lockdowns, snap border closures and the repeated failure of the State Government’s hotel quarantine system and contact tracing.

He said that in many places, for smaller tourism and boutique producer enterprises across areas such as Loddon Shire, the damage has been flying under the radar.

“If there is any good news for industry to come out of this crisis it will be the recommendations this inquiry is going to make – if, of course, the Government decides to accept and implement them,” Mr Walsh said.

“But it must get the facts right – and the only place to do that is to come here and meet the people who were the hardest hit, to hear the stories and see their damage,” he added.

“While tourism has shown signs of a strong rebound ... “Government supports are announced but so many in my electorate are exasperated to find they do not qualify,” he said.

Mr Walsh said the Nationals had written to committee chair Enver Erdogan to suggest regional hearings.

SPORT AROUND THE LINKS BRIDGEWATER

THE sun was shining brightly for the Tarnagulla and District Golf Club’s annual Easter Cup. The Easter Cup is a threeball Ambrose format, where teams of up to three players tee off and then the best shot is selected, and all other players pick up their ball and hit from the same spot.

This continues for the subsequent shots until the ball is in the hole, an ideal format for social golf.

It is also a fun way to ease into the golfing season at Tarnagulla as golfers need not worry about any of their own poor shots rather, they can work as a team to play the golf course.

The golf course was looking impeccable and very green

thanks to the work of the club’s many volunteers and recent rains.

Due to the high number of players, multiple tee off times were required. This meant that the sounds of laughter, ‘hoots’ of delight and gentle ribbing between the golfers could be heard all day across the golf course.

The multiple tee-off times also ensured for a socially distant event.

In all, 20 teams competed on the day, with many teams having friends and families supporting following them as they played the nine holes. Some even followed on bikes or looked on from the clubhouse enjoying a fantastic array of refreshments.

The golfing was competitive with little separating the top teams.

Winners of the Easter Cup were Jacob Mason, Andrea Kirby and Justin Kirby.

A big congratulation must go to Andrea, who managed to squeeze in the round, and winning score, before attending her own baby shower later in the afternoon.

Close behind in second, were Garry Harwood, Meredith Harwood and Leigh Fotheringham.

The longest drive competition was won by Will McNamee. Will hit a mammoth drive on the 5th hole that, despite the many attempts by others, could not be beat.

The Nearest to the Pin was won by Dave Shay on the 3rd hole. The Longest Drive: Will McNamee The next event is the Kangaroo Caddy on May 15.

THIS WEEK MATCH of the day this Saturday will see the season debut of Bridgewater.

The Mean Machine will be looking to start their journey back to prominance in the league after missing finals in 2019.

Their opponent will be Bears Lagoon-Serpentine who not only pushed, but equalled and outdid Mitiamo for much of their opening round encounter last weekend. While Bridgewater have recruited well in the off-seasons they may not have it all their own way.

In a late change of venue, Inglewood’s home game against Mitiamo has been switched to John Forbes Oval while ground work is completed at Inglewood.

NORTH CENTRAL THIS WEEK THE Redbacks have their chance to record full points when they play at home against St Arnaud, Wedderburn’s opening draw against Donald has given them added incentive to win.

The Redbacks’ senior cohort now boasts 11 players who were part of the club’s 2015 under 16 flag-winning combination.

Meanwhile, Boort is again at home. This week to BirchipWatchem who disposed of St Arnaud in solid fashion last week. The Magpies will be looking for steady improvement after the tough encounter against powerhouse Sea Lake-Nandaly.

REIGNING premiers Mitiamo took almost the full four quarters to shake off a determined Bears Lagoon-Serpentine in Saturday’s opening round.

The Loddon Valley league champions were inaccurate against the breeze in the first quarter registering just three behinds and struggled against Serp’s dogged defence.

The Superoos had chances early - Andrew Cussen missed a set shot on the siren at quarter time but went on to kick two majors for the game as did Ryan Wellington.

While Miti went to the final break a goal up thanks to Wellington, Serp kept peppering the goal square most of the day But the final quarter belonged to the champions, holding visitors to John Forbes Oval to just two behinds.

Mitiamo was troubled most

by Serp’s defence, a solid lineup that will give other teams a few headaches in coming rounds.

Pyramid Hill had a goal feast against Inglewood with Braidy Dickens kicking a bag and fellow Dog Bailey George snaring nine.

The other bag of the round was kicked by Kain Robins in Marong’s match against Calivil.

Under first time senior coach Glen Scholtes, the Calivil boys ran out with 14 players making their senior club debut and 11 of the 22 aged 20 and under.

“Against a top side with a lot of seasoned, experienced footballers our young team fought the game out but ultimately were outclassed by a stronger side.’’

Breeze blows away win hopes DEBUTANTE Isaac Holt got Wedderburn Redbacks off to a flying start in their North Central league opener against Donald on Saturday.

But Holt’s two goals in a strong first quarter - six goals to one - were not enough to deliver four points.

The Redbacks made good use of the breeze in the opening quarter but could not match that effort when

again kicking with the wind in the third. They were held scoreless in the final quarter against the wind with scores tied on the final siren.

Co-coach Danny Benaim said: “We tackled and pressured really well all day.

“When we had the wind in the third quarter we didn’t quite use the ball well enough and missed a few goals we should have kicked.

“Disappointing, as we thought we should have won but round one and happy to leave with two points.”

Benaim said Holt was a key player all day for the Redbacks’ forward line while midfielder Jordan Rosengren and backman Hamish WinterIrving impressed.

Reigning premiers Sea Lake Nandaly proved too strong for Boort on Saturday night.
