POLL PITCH ON
MALLEE candidates have jumped from the starter’s block, pitching their platforms for the May 21 federal election.
Sitting member Anne Webster will face at least four challengers in the local poll race where child care, roads and telecommunications have already emerged as key issues. Other declared candidates are
independent Sophie Baldwin, Horsham councillor Claudia Haenel standing as a community independent, Swan Hill councillor Stuart King for United Australia Party and Australian Citizens’ Party’s Chris Lahy putting his hand up for a second tilt. Labor and the Greens have yet to name candidates in Mallee
while the Liberals will not stand against the Nationals’ Dr Webster. Australian Electoral Commission says local polling locations are still to be confirmed. At the 2019 election, booths were at Boort, Bridgewater, Calivil, Dingee, Dunolly Inglewood, Mitiamo, Newbridge, Pyramid
Hill, Serpentine, Tarnagulla and Wedderburn. Meanwhile, Loddon Shire’s election year push for greater investment in rural communities has been backed by other councils across country Victoria. Rural Councils Victoria chair Mary-Anne Brown said last week: “We want rural Victorians to tell their candidates that it is vital that rural Victoria gets its fair share of government investment.”
“We need investment to ensure that our roads are safe, that there is jobs growth, proper digital connectivity, support for emergency services, quality aged care and support for tourism and local councils. “Rural Victorians are resilient, but like all other Victorians our communities need their fair share so that those who visit or live in rural Victoria have the services they need and deserve.”
